Abstract

The nature of structures comprising part-whole relations belongs to the oldest, most fundamental and still discussed questions of philosophical ontology. Unlike many former approaches, which either give priority to the parts or to the whole of such structures, the present project is an ontological investigation that suggests an alternative to a hierarchical conception of parts and whole with a one-sided dependence relationship. In considering the dynamic ‘in-between’ or interplay of parts and whole, I develop and determine an ontological category called ‘part-whole oscillations’ (pwo)., Die Beschaffenheit von Strukturen mit Verhältnissen zwischen Ganzen und Teilen gehört zu den ältesten, grundlegendsten und immer noch besprochenen Fragen der philosophischen Ontologie. Im Gegensatz zu vielen früheren Ansätzen, welche entweder die Teile oder das Ganze solcher Strukturen priorisieren, stellt das vorliegende Projekt eine ontologische Untersuchung dar, die eine Alternative zu einem hierarchischen Verständnis von Teilen und Ganzen mit einseitigem Abhängigkeitsverhältnis anbietet. Unter Berücksichtigung des dynamischen ‘Dazwischen’ beziehungsweise Wechselspiels von Teilen und Ganzen, entwickle und bestimme ich eine ontologische Kategorie namens ‘Teil-Ganze-Oszillationen’ (kurz pwo: part-whole oscillations).

Abstract

Objective: There is growing evidence that genetic data are of benefit in the rheumatology outpatient setting by aiding early diagnosis. A genetic probability tool (G‐PROB) has been developed to aid diagnosis has not yet been tested in a real‐world setting. Our aim was to assess whether G‐PROB could aid diagnosis in the rheumatology outpatient setting using data from the Norfolk Arthritis Register (NOAR), a prospective observational cohort of patients presenting with early inflammatory arthritis. Methods: Genotypes and clinician diagnoses were obtained from patients from NOAR. Six G‐probabilities (0%–100%) were created for each patient based on known disease‐associated odds ratios of published genetic risk variants, each corresponding to one disease of rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, psoriatic arthritis, spondyloarthropathy, gout, or "other diseases." Performance of the G‐probabilities compared with clinician diagnosis was assessed. Results: We tested G‐PROB on 1,047 patients. Calibration of G‐probabilities with clinician diagnosis was high, with regression coefficients of 1.047, where 1.00 is ideal. G‐probabilities discriminated clinician diagnosis with pooled areas under the curve (95% confidence interval) of 0.85 (0.84–0.86). G‐probabilities <5% corresponded to a negative predictive value of 96.0%, for which it was possible to suggest >2 unlikely diseases for 94% of patients and >3 for 53.7% of patients. G‐probabilities >50% corresponded to a positive predictive value of 70.4%. In 55.7% of patients, the disease with the highest G‐probability corresponded to clinician diagnosis. Conclusion: G‐PROB converts complex genetic information into meaningful and interpretable conditional probabilities, which may be especially helpful at eliminating unlikely diagnoses in the rheumatology outpatient setting. 28. Does "Open Strategy" improve employees' knowledge of strategy? A quantitative study.

Abstract

Purpose: Recent research has highlighted limited explicit knowledge of a company's strategy on the part of its employees. The concept of Open Strategy has emerged as a promising approach to address and enhance knowledge and understanding of an organization's strategy across all hierarchical levels. However, empirical investigations of the relationship between the degree of openness in a strategy process and employees' strategy knowledge remain scarce. This study aims to fill this gap. Design/methodology/approach: We conducted an online survey of individuals from various organizations, measuring the degree of openness of their strategy process and using regression analysis to determine the impact on strategy knowledge among the respondents. We operationalized strategy knowledge using two concepts. The first concept encompassed general knowledge of the employer's strategy, mission, and vision. The second concept measured strategy knowledge in a more concrete manner by assessing factors such as the company's markets, how it positions itself and its economic logic. Findings: Our findings indicate that regardless of the level of hierarchy, the degree of openness has a strong positive effect on strategy knowledge. However, this effect is smaller when specific aspects of strategy knowledge are assessed compared to a general understanding of strategy. Our results highlight the potential of Open Strategy as an effective approach to enhancing employees' knowledge of the employer's strategy. Originality/value: Our research demonstrates that the degree of openness in strategy processes significantly enhances strategy knowledge, thereby laying the groundwork for effective strategy implementation. The results highlight the importance of cultivating a culture of transparency, participation and inclusion of employees as well as ongoing communication to effectively integrate strategy into organizational practices. Abstract

The present article is a partly ontological, partly Gestalt-psychological discussion of the thinkability of structures in which parts and whole are interdependent (MI). In the first section, I show that in the framework of E. Husserl’s formal part–whole ontology, the conceptualization of such an interdependence leads to (mereo)logical problems. The second section turns to and affirms the experience of this interplay between parts and whole, exemplified with B. Pinna’s recent research on meaningful Gestalt perception. In the final section, I take the experienceability of MI as a justification to suggest a way of rethinking it. This entails an implementation of the process of foregrounding and backgrounding displayed by reversible figures and originally described by E. Rubin. This can avoid both an identity relation between parts and whole and their mutual exclusion as well as hierarchization due to their apparent differences. It would also guarantee the inherent dynamics of interdependence.
