Institutional approaches support a significant perspective shift in the field of studies of innovation. From a firm-centered tradition discussing innovative internal capabilities, the innovation literature comes to recognize an open process, primarily based on interorganizational relationships. Under this perspective shift, the innovation ecosystem emerges as a concept capable of relating innovative performance to the set of organizational actors and their interactions in a context of cultural, cognitive, and normative elements. Within the limits of the innovation ecosystem, collaboration, as a free, recurring, and productive interaction, gains prominence as the central dynamic for technological development. However, collaborative behavior requires the sharing of structures, norms, and culture, and its development in the environment of innovation ecosystems still instigates further analysis. The problem that this research sought to answer, therefore, considers the dynamics of fostering collaboration in innovation ecosystems. The articulation between institutional work – perspective at the agency of the individual in the institutionalization process – and institutional logics – perspective at the dimensions that support the institution – was used as the theoretical lens of this dissertation. In order to achieve the research objectives, a multiple case study was carried out covering the innovation ecosystems of Sophia Antipolis, in France, and Tecnosinos, in Brazil. As a result, the research brings a theoretical-conceptual framework and six propositions that support the thesis that relational assets ease the implementation of institutional work practices that foster collaboration as an institutionalized organizational behavior in innovation ecosystems. The theoretical contributions of this dissertation inform the literature on the propensity of reaching results from the inclusion of the relational level of analysis as a bridge capable of integrating institutional work and institutional logics. This dissertation brings managerial contributions insofar as it informs public managers, entrepreneurs, and researchers inserted in innovation ecosystems on ways to stimulate and take advantage of collaborative initiatives. Finally, this dissertation sets suggestions for future studies.

International audience; The development of inter-firm cooperation is a major issue in government policies to support economic competitiveness. In order to optimize the spread and impact of these policies, the public authorities deploy specific mechanisms in which universities can play a central role. While the latter have every legitimacy to be active within the framework of support mechanisms for innovation or technology transfer, it seems less natural to involve them in operations outside these activities. We present the lessons learned from a longitudinal case study of an inter-firm cooperation program conducted in a state in southern Brazil through a partnership between the government and community universities in charge of its operational implementation. From a relational perspective, we analyze the determinants of this partnership in order to identify the relational rents produced by the networks of SMEs built into authentic territorial ecosystems: community access and propagation. We show that these rents are confronted with obstacles that constitute relational losses that must be minimized in order to optimize the effectiveness of the public policy pursued: inflexibility and distance from the target.; Le développement de la coopération inter-entreprises est un enjeu majeur des politiques gouvernementales de soutien à la compétitivité économique.

Different sampling methods can be used in forest surveys. It is important to know the precision and accuracy of these sampling methods, and which one is the most appropriate in specific conditions of the forest population. The aim of this study was to compare estimates of a forest inventory performed by different sampling methods with forest census results. The sampling methods evaluated were the fixed-area method and the variable-area methods of Bitterlich, Prodan, and Strand. The data were obtained in a 15-year-old thinned stand of Pinus taeda L., located in the municipality of Teixeira Soares, southern Brazil, with a total area of 12.80 ha. Initially, the forest census was carried out, and subsequently, the sample units for each sampling method were distributed in the stand, with a common starting point. The variables used to compare the sample results with the census means were quadratic diameter, number of trees, basal area, and volume, per hectare. Precision and accuracy were evaluated by sampling error and whether the confidence intervals covered the population means, respectively. The fixed-area and Bitterlich methods stood out in precision for all variables analysed. The fixedarea, Bitterlich and Strand methods with proportion to height provided more accurate estimates. The Prodan method provided inaccurate and imprecise estimates for the variables under analysis, except for the quadratic diameter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The innovation literature is growing rapidly and one of the of the main concerns is about the contexts that encourage and strengthen the results of innovation. Researches on innovation environments are still in its early stages. This paper sheds light on the process of fostering and developing an innovation ecosystem in cities with the perspective of institutional work, considering the need to institutionalize the collaboration. The method used was a multiple cases study, in a descriptive and processual approach. The study was conducted in two cities in Latin America: Porto Alegre and Florianopolis. The findings are that there is a logic in the process of institutionalization of collaboration that reflects on the development of the innovation ecosystem, which occurs in three phases involving three groups of actors: leaders, support and community. Understanding this process can help other cities or regions to promote their own innovation ecosystems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Cooperation allows strategic gains in access to resources and risk sharing, especially in technological development efforts. However, market pressures, such as the search for differentiation, can mitigate the decision to engage in cooperative activities. This article describes and explains how alliances and partnerships are sustained in an environment that pushes for value creation through differentiation. As environments where multiple organizational actors meet geographically to share and compete for resources, innovation ecosystems form a relevant object of study to answer this question. This article applies the theoretical lens of institutional work to analyze two innovation ecosystems located in different socio-economic contexts: Sophia Antipolis in France and Tecnosinos in Brazil. The results indicate that the institutional work of social structuring, normative systems and cognitive coherence can support cooperation as a strategic option for technological development in innovation ecosystems. The article provides three contributions: it informs the literature on cooperation strategies with 10 practices that support cooperative action; it portrays narratives of a set of actors that could promote practices aimed at institutionalizing cooperation; it proposes a model for cooperation resilience in innovation ecosystems. This dissertation presents the process of constitution and diffusion of cooperation networks in a context of micro and small firms through public policies. With a starting point in an analytical literature review of inter-organizational relations, institutional theory and institutional work, it sought to understand the role of individual actors in institutional changes capable of easing the development of these firms. The theoretical evidences induce to the research question of how a public policy stimulated the constitution and the diffusion of cooperation networks as a new organizational phenomenon among micro and small firms. To address the resolution of this question, it is proposed, through empirical observations, a theoretical-conceptual framework to support the understanding about this institutional change process. The empirical research conducted a case study about the trajectory of stimulation to cooperation among micro and small firms in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, through the institutionalization of the cooperation network as a new organizational form. The results highlight the following evidence: a) the institutional change process starts with the recognition of intern and extern motivation inherent to the institutional actor; b) institutional artifacts composed of ideas, materials and identity are important conducers to the institutional change trajectory; c) the connection to local actors enhance contextuality, legitimacy and power necessary to the effective implementation of actions proposed by a centralized institutional actor; d) field-configuring events create spaces in every level of institutional work to support the acceptance of new institutional practices and limits; e) the practices of institutional work hold complementary sets of political work, reconfiguration of belief systems, alteration of abstract configurations, disclosure and adaptation of the new institution. These evidences indicate that practices of institutional work must be underpinned in institutional artifacts, connection to local actors and field-configuring events in order to promote thorough institutional changes.

The literature on platforms emphasizes the balance between supply and demand as precursors to network expansion, strategy development and strategy sustainability. This study questions this logic through the exploratory approach of a public platform based on social returns. Results demonstrate that when an institutional force supports a platform concerned with diffuse and collective interests, it is possible that the strategy could sustain and develop without the balance of its forces. The study contributes to the strategic platform literature by pointing out the distinct aspects of social platforms and underlining the support generated by institutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COOPETITION ,BUSINESS partnerships ,INDUSTRIAL research - Abstract
Global competition emerges with a greater need for faster innovations. R&D plays an essential role in the elaboration of new products and processes in an even shorter period. As the access to resources and knowledge inside the own country borders are restricted, firms start to go abroad looking for other options of R&D. This way, international R&D partnerships arise as an important theme for theory and practice. Through a systematic literature review of 31 papers published in management journals from 2002 to 2014, this study brings two streams of the literature. First, a description of the main concepts in international R&D partnerships. Second, the best practices for the theme proposed and the gaps in the area's knowledge. This paper contributes to both practitioners and literature by providing a research agenda with seven themes for future research, regarding in-depth studies, secondary data analysis, measure proposal and managerial implications.
