This paper proposes a discrete space vector modulation and optimized switching sequence model predictive controller for three-level neutral-point-clamped inverters in grid-connected applications. The proposed strategy is based on cascaded model predictive control (MPC) for controlling the grid current while maintaining the capacitor voltage balanced without weighting factor. To enhance the closed-loop performance, the external MPC evaluates 19 basic and 138 virtual vectors (VV) of the proposed space vector method. The optimal control voltage is then selected using an extended deadbeat method to reduce the execution time of the proposed control algorithm. By using the discrete space vector modulation principle, the VV are synthesized based on switching sequence (SS) and are divided into negative and positive SSs considering their impact on the neutral point (NP) potential. The inner MPC evaluates both types of SSs and selects the one that keeps the capacitor voltage balanced. Various controllers are evaluated and compared against the proposed control strategy. The results show that the proposed strategy improves performance without weighting factor, while maintaining a total harmonic distortion of current to be less than 2%. Compared to the modulated MPC which provides the same fixed switching frequency, the proposed controller reduces the computational burden by over 50% while also providing better NP voltage balance accuracy. In this paper, several types of microstrip power divider are studied and compared in terms of harmonics suppression and size reductions. The importance of this research lies in the fact that power dividers are critical components in various communication systems, and their performance directly affects the overall system efficiency. The conventional structure of the power divider has an acceptable performance at operating frequency in terms of excellent output ports isolation, low insertion loss, and high return loss, but occupies large size and passes unwanted signals at higher frequencies along with desired signal without any suppression. Harmonics are popular distortion and has different distortion impacts in many different facilities. Recently, several techniques are introduced to overcome these drawbacks. Applied open stubs, applied resonators, lumped reactive components such as capacitors and inductors, coupled lines, defected ground structure (DGS), and electronic band gaps are common methods, which are widely used to overcome these drawbacks. Finally, the study results show that the resonatorbased power dividers and coupled-line-based power dividers have good performances in terms of size reduction and harmonic suppression but increase insertion loss parameter. Furthermore, the lumped reactive component-based power dividers and applied DGS and electromagnetic bandgap cells suppress unwanted harmonics, but they need extra process to fabrication, which is undesirable. Moreover, the open-stub-based power dividers have moderate performance with simple structure, but size reduction and harmonics suppression are not so superior in this method. The application of modular multilevel converters (MMCs) to large drive systems is subject to severe low-frequency operation restrictions. The fluctuation of capacitor voltage and the high amplitude of common mode voltage in sub-modules is a thorny problem. In this paper, a novel fly-across capacitor modular multilevel converter topology is adopted to eliminate low-frequency voltage ripples by using the fly-across capacitor as a power transfer channel between the upper and lower bridge arms of the MMC. A novel finite compensation method is proposed--instead of the traditional full compensation method--that introduces a real-time variable limiting factor to change the amplitude of the mixed injected high-frequency differential-mode voltage and high-frequency differential-mode current and reduce the amplitude of the common-mode voltage on the AC side while lowering the current stress of the power devices. Finally, a complete system simulation model is constructed, and the topology with the proposed control strategy are verified to have good output characteristics under different operating conditions; good results are achieved in suppressing the sub-module fluctuation and common-mode voltage. The paper presents efficiency and power loss analysis in a high-frequency, seven-level diode-clamped inverter (7LDCB). The inverter is composed of four-level (4L) diode-clamped branches based on MOSFET transistors and Si Schottky diodes. The range of DC-link voltages enables the operation of the inverter in connection with a single-phase power grid. The tested inverter can be controlled using various modulation concepts that affect its parameters, but also energy losses. Carrier-based modulation, which may be useful in a few applications, is compared to selective modulation based on the state machine (SM-based) algorithm. The article demonstrates the efficiency level of the inverter as well as the influence of the modulation method and switching frequency on the efficiency and loss distribution in semiconductor devices. The article also shows the hardware implementation of a complex modulation algorithm based on selective switching states used to maintain voltage balance on three DC-link capacitors. Redundant switching states allow the generation of the same voltage but with the use of a selected DC-link capacitor. This makes it possible to balance the DC-link voltage with the load current. The article presents experimental results, which show the advantage of using the modulation method with selective switching states. First, it allows for equalizing the loading of DC-link capacitors. This paper presents a three-phase induction motor (IM) drive comprising a single-phase Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) converter with an active power decoupling (APD) as an active front-end converter (AFEC) to reduce the size of a DC link capacitor. Consequently, film capacitors can be used in place of bulky electrolytic capacitors that improve the power density, reliability, and cost of AFECs. A control scheme for an APD circuit is developed to mitigate the ripple power, and to control the three-phase IM, a maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) control scheme is implemented. A Simulink model of the proposed system rated for 3.73 kW, 200 V, and 50 Hz three-phase IM drive and its equivalent prototype model are developed in a laboratory and the APD and the MTPA control schemes are implemented with the help of STM32F407VG, a 32-bit microcontroller and dSPACE 1104, respectively. This paper demonstrates the experimental verification of the concepts for APD and MTPA control. Further, a significant reduction in motor current at starting/light load conditions is observed that leads to lower energy requirements. The prospective application of these schemes includes railway traction drive, electric vehicles, and so on, where compactness, reliability, and lower energy requirements are the prime concerns. This paper presents a new MEMS varactor that uses repulsive actuation to achieve an ultra-linear capacitance-to-voltage response. The approach proposed involves actuating the moveable electrode away from the fixed electrode, instead of the conventional closing-the-gap direction. This increasing-gap movement reduces the capacitance as the actuation voltage increases. The MEMS variable capacitor is fabricated using PolyMUMPs technology and exhibits an excellent linearity factor of 99.7% in capacitance-to-voltage response, and a capacitance tuning ratio of 11× was achieved. In this paper, a new structure of the quadrature hybrid coupler (QHC) with compact size is proposed using capacitive composite lines and meandered open stubs. The proposed coupler works at 1.6 GHz with a 0.4 GHz bandwidth, which shows 25% fractional bandwidth (FBW). The proposed QHC occupies only 15 mm × 15 mm (0.12 λ × 0.12 λ), while the typical QHC size is 32 mm × 32 mm (0.25 λ × 25 λ) at the same working frequency. In the designed structure, two symmetric meandered stubs and two symmetric π-shaped composite networks including capacitors and microstrip lines are applied together. The designed QHC has a small size and occupies only 22% of the area of the conventional QHC, resulting in a 78% size reduction. The designed prototype has been analyzed, fabricated and tested, and the experimental results verify the simulated and analysis results. The results show a better than 27 dB return loss, more than 28 dB isolation between the output ports and less than 0.4 dB insertion loss at the working frequency of 1600 MHz. This paper presents a novel concept of the DC-AC system with the input voltage boost ability, seven-level output voltage modulation, and the input AC current reduction at the double frequency of the output voltage. The system integrates the NPC full-bridge inverter which is composed of four-level legs and an active input voltage balancer (AIVB). The DC-link is composed of three capacitors connected in a series. The source of the energy is connected directly to the middle capacitor while the upper and lower capacitors of the DC-link are charged by the AIVB. The operation of the AIVB leads to balancing of the DC-link voltage and a three-fold boosting of the input voltage. The AIVB utilizes a novel switched-capacitor (SC) topology and can be designed as a low-volume quasi-magneticless converter with a simple open-loop control. One of the proposed methods of the control of the AIVB allows for a double frequency reduction in the input current. The application of the AIVB allows for the use of a seven-level NPC full-bridge (FB) inverter with a simple classic carrier-based PWM which is not applicable in the typical DC-link configurations. In this paper, a differential-input plus-type differential voltage current conveyor-based first-order universal filter is designed. This voltage-mode filter uses a grounded capacitor. In addition, it can provide all the noninverting and inverting first-order universal filter responses. The circuit provides high common-mode rejection ratio of about 76.5 dB. Nevertheless, it needs a single matching problem and comprises two floating resistors. Quadrature oscillator (QO) design is obtained using this filter as an application example. This paper presents an estimation of the parameters for a Double Layer Super Capacitor (DLC) that is modelled with a two-branch circuit. The estimation is achieved using a constrained minimization technique, which is developed off-line and uses a single constraint to write the matrix equation. The model is algebraically manipulated to obtain a matrix equation, and a signal processing system is developed to prepare the signals for the identification algorithms. The proposed method builds on the results obtained using an unconstrained ordinary least-squares (OLS) technique. The method is tested both in simulation and experimentally, using a specially-designed experimental rig. A current ramp input is used to generate the corresponding output voltage and its derivatives. The results obtained from the constrained off-line minimization algorithm are compared with those obtained using a traditional off-line estimation method. The discussion of the results shows that the proposed method outperforms the traditional estimation technique. In summary, this paper contributes to the field of DLC parameter estimation by introducing a new off-line constrained minimization technique. The results obtained from the simulations and experimental rig demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method with two of three parameters showing relative errors less than 5%. This paper proposes an active resonant network based on variable resonant capacitances to improve the operating performance of the LCC-S compensated topology in the wireless power transfer (WPT) system for electric vehicles under coil-misaligned conditions. By adjusting the series and parallel compensation capacitances on the transmitting side, the output voltage can be kept constant and the energy transfer efficiency can be improved under different coil offsets. The switch-controlled capacitors (SCCs) are used to change the compensation capacitances continuously. To find the proper compensation capacitances to achieve the excellent performance of the system, the optimization algorithm is applied, and the corresponding digital control strategy is described to regulate the equivalent capacitances of SCCs. Experimental results with a 2.7 kW power scale show that the output voltage is constant, and the operating efficiency is always over 90% in the WPT system with an active resonant network under different misalignment conditions. In addition, the system is delivering an equal amount of energy for all misalignments within the range of 80 mm, which improves the expected value of transferred energy by about 29%. The Zeta converter is an essential and widely used high-order converter. The current modeling studies on Zeta converters are based on the model that devices, such as capacitors and inductors, are of integer order. For this reason, this paper takes the Zeta converter as the research object and conducts an in-depth study on its fractional-order modeling. However, the existing modeling and analysis methods have high computational complexity, the analytical solutions of system variables are tedious, and it is difficult to describe the ripple changes of state variables. This paper combines the principle of harmonic balance with the equivalent small parameter method (ESPM); the approximate analytic steady-state solution of the state variable can be obtained in only three iterative steps in the whole solving process. The DC components and ripples of the state variables obtained by the proposed method were compared with those obtained by the Oustaloup's filter-based approximation method; the symbolic period results obtained by ESPM had sufficient precision because they included more combinations of higher harmonics. Finally, the influence of fractional order on harmonics were analyzed. The obtained results show that the proposed method has the advantage of being less computational and easily describing changes in the ripple of the state variables. Recently, the development of integrated inverters for photovoltaic systems has been widely performed to reduce overall system size, costs, and losses. Thus, integrated inverters have emerged as a prominent solution for replacing two-stage power conversion composed of a step-up converter and a voltage source inverter. Thereby, this paper proposes an integrated inverter topology for single-phase grid-tied photovoltaic systems. The proposed power converter, called a Single-Phase Integrated Zeta Inverter (SP-IZI), can boost the input voltage and inject a sinusoidal and regulated current into the mains with low harmonic distortion. The SP-IZI is based on integrating modified DC-DC Zeta converters, designed and controlled to operate in a discontinuous conduction mode, and presents similarities with the Modified Zeta Inverter (MZI). In this way, this paper compares the main parameters of both topologies and provides a complete study of the SP-IZI, involving both quantitative and qualitative studies as well as a small signals analysis. The feasibility and functionality of the proposed SP-IZI inverter are presented and evaluated through experimental results, which demonstrate that the SP-IZI presents the following advantages compared to the MZI: (i) the voltage in coupling capacitors is 13% lower; (ii) voltage stresses in switches and diodes are 40% lower; and (iii) static gain is similar to the traditional Zeta converter. Tantalum is widely used in capacitor field in modern times. The tantalum shell of capacitor is usually obtained by deep drawing process, and adhesive wear of the shell is the main hidden danger during its deep drawing process. In this paper, ultrasonic vibration–assisted deep drawing technology is proposed to manufacture tantalum capacitor shell, in order to effectively control the adhesive wear of tantalum capacitor with the assistance of ultrasonic vibration energy. Influence of ultrasonic vibration on deep drawing force and surface forming accuracy of tantalum cup deep drawing is discussed by applying different amplitudes of ultrasonic vibration signals at different time periods. The results reveal that in the amplitude range of 3–7 μm, the amplitude of 5 μm has the best inhibition effect on adhesive wear during the deep drawing of tantalum cup, and the effect is especially obvious in the initial stage of the deep drawing process; the reduction of wearing can reach more than 22% comparing with the results without ultrasonic amplitude. This paper demonstrates the controlling abilities of a large PV-farm as a Solar-PV inverter for mitigating the chaotic electrical, electromechanical, and torsional oscillations including Subsynchronous resonance in a turbogenerator-based power system. The oscillations include deviations in the machine speed, rotor angle, voltage fluctuations (leading to voltage collapse), and torsional modes. During the night with no solar power generation, the PV-plant switches to PV-STATCOM mode and works as a Solar-PV inverter at its full capacity to attenuate the oscillations. During full sun in the daytime, on any fault detection, the PV-plant responds instantly and stops generating power to work as a Solar-PV inverter. The PV-farm operates in the same mode until the oscillations are fully alleviated. This paper manifests the control of the DC-link capacitor voltage of the Solar-PV inverter with a bacterial foraging optimization-based intelligent maximum power point tracking controller for the optimal control of active and reactive power. Kundur's multi-machine model aggregated with PV-plant is modeled in the Matlab/Simulink environment to examine the rotor swing deviations with associated shaft segments. A simple circuit based on modified extra-X second-generation current conveyor (MEXCCII), which is capable of realizing the following grounded immittance functions: a lossless capacitor, a lossy capacitor, a lossy inductor and a lossy frequency-dependent negative conductance, is introduced in this paper. The circuit employs one MEXCCII and three passive components. The use of single active block makes the circuit structure simpler. No component's matching constraint is needed in the proposed circuit. The nonideal study of the proposed grounded immittance circuit is also included. The circuit's performance is examined using 0.18- μ m technology-based PSPICE simulations. Experimental results which are performed using off-the-shelf integrated circuits (ICs) and bread board are also included. The proposed circuit is negligibly affected by the temperature variation and process variation. A single pole high-pass filter as an application of the realized lossy capacitor and a band-pass filter as an application of the realized lossy inductor are also presented in this paper. MXene is a type of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbide and nitride, and its promising energy storage materials highlight its characteristics of high density, high metal-like conductivity, tunable terminals, and charge storage mechanisms known as pseudo-alternative capacitance. MXenes are a class of 2D materials synthesized by chemical etching of the A element in MAX phases. Since they were first discovered more than 10 years ago, the number of distinct MXenes has grown substantially to include numerous MnXn−1 (n = 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5), solid solutions (ordered and disordered), and vacancy solids. To date, MXenes used in energy storage system applications have been broadly synthesized, and this paper summarizes the current developments, successes, and challenges of using MXenes in supercapacitors. This paper also reports the synthesis approaches, various compositional issues, material and electrode topology, chemistry, and hybridization of MXene with other active materials. The present study also summarizes MXene's electrochemical properties, applicability in pliant-structured electrodes, and energy storage capabilities when using aqueous/non-aqueous electrolytes. Finally, we conclude by discussing how to reshape the face of the latest MXene and what to consider when designing the next generation of MXene-based capacitors and supercapacitors. This paper investigates the influence of a constant carrier phase shift on the DC-link capacitor harmonic current of cascaded converters used in fuel-cell and mild-hybrid electric vehicles. In these applications, a DC-DC converter can be adopted between the battery and the motor drive inverter in a cascaded structure, where the two converters share the same DC-link. Since the DC-link capacitor of such a system represents a critical component, the optimization of the converter operation to limit the current stress and extend the lifetime of the capacitor is an primary objective. This paper proposes the use of a carrier phase shift between the modulations of the two converters in order to minimize the harmonic current of the DC-link capacitor. By harmonic analysis, an optimal carrier phase shift can be derived depending on the converter configuration. Analytical results are presented and validated by hardware-in-the-loop experiments. The findings show that the pulse width modulation carrier phase shift between the interleaved boost converter and the voltage source motor drive inverter has a significant influence on the DC-link capacitor current and thus on its lifetime. A case study with two-cell and three-cell interleaved boost converters shows a possible DC-link capacitor lifetime extension of up to 390%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a comprehensive investigation of several important error sources for the successive-approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). The error sources that we discuss in this paper include the dynamic comparator offset, the dynamic gain error of digital-to-analog converter (DAC), the capacitor mismatch of capacitive DAC, the incomplete settling of DAC, the undershoot of reference voltage, and the input signal coupling. The integral/differential nonlinearities (INL/DNL) of SAR ADCs that are resulted from these error sources are analyzed and addressed. A diagnostic procedure is presented to identify the possible error sources based on the INL/DNL plots. In a previous paper, we introduced a modified Steinmetz equation to account for dc-bias field effects, which requires only a simple dc permeability measurement to predict total power loss. In this paper, we expanded our investigation to include Finemet nanocrystalline material and found that our modified Steinmetz formalism was effective in predicting dc-bias-related losses for this system as well. In this paper, it was observed that Finemet cores exhibit lower losses than Metglas cores under identical test frequencies and bias fields. In addition, we show that a full characterization of the dc loss component necessitates the consideration of higher order ( $n>1$ ) harmonic components. In order to quantify these higher frequency loss components, a dc–dc converter-based test system was built to intentionally introduce inductor current harmonics by varying the filter capacitance and parasitic inductance of the test system. Both core types were evaluated under fundamental frequencies of 20 to 150 kHz and dc-bias fields of up to 1.3 kA/m, with the inclusion of distorted waveforms obtained by varying filter capacitance. At higher frequencies, the Metglas cores were found to exhibit greater loss fractions associated with the higher order harmonic components. A detailed summary of the measured core loss characteristics for both core types is included and discussed. This paper highlights an immediate need for renewable generation developers, manufacturers, utilities and industry standardization institutes to jointly address a challenge of capacitor switching transient immunity in inverter-based wind or solar farms. The need was identified from wide-area operation records which showed partial or full generation loss in coincidence with routine utility-owned capacitor switching. The lack of a clear industry guideline has caused confusion to all involved parties. This paper recommends all entities to address this challenge collaboratively through enhanced equipment specification, design, and test before a well-defined industry guideline becomes available. Some inverter-fed motors, particularly at higher power ratings, are supplied with a shaft brush in order to help mitigate bearing currents. As more inverters are applied to motors in Class I Division 1/Zone 1 and Class I Division 2/Zone 2 locations, there is a need to understand whether a shaft brush can be safely applied in such an environment. This paper addresses the physics of why this is a concern and a methodology to evaluate the relative safety of two example cases. These issues are considered from the perspective of users, manufacturers of inverters and motors, and certifying bodies. The question posed in the title of this paper is answered by considering whether the addition of a shaft brush to an inverter-fed motor in a Class I hazardous location makes the system more safe or less safe. This paper presents an evolution of control systems of Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs) focusing on the internal voltages and currents dynamics. MMCs have passive components inside the converter that create extra dynamics compared to conventional VSCs. Some control schemes that do not consider these internal dynamics may still stabilize the system asymptotically thanks to the linearisation in the modulation step. However these control schemes are less robust because they are prone to poor damped oscillations on the dc side of the converter. The MMC circuit and energy relationships are presented in this paper. Along with a gradual development of the energy based control, the important roles of each internal dynamics are clearly demonstrated. Filter capacitors are among the most serious noise sources in HVDC converter stations, and there are still no satisfactory noise reduction measures. This paper proposes the use of the mass tuning (MT) method to adjust the vibration frequency response characteristics and to realize vibration control and noise reduction. First, the theoretical model of the MT structure is developed based on continuum mechanics. Based on the theoretical model, it is revealed that inserting an MT component into the capacitor element package will cause a decrease in the resonant frequencies and antiresonant frequencies. Furthermore, the movement degree of the resonant frequencies increases as the position of the MT component becomes closer to the package end, while the movement degree of the antiresonant frequency is the largest when the MT component is located in the middle of the package model. The vibrations and the noise levels of an example MT capacitor are then compared with the results of an original capacitor. The comparison results show that the MT scheme designed in this paper can achieve a noise reduction effect of 12–15 dB(A). The proposed reduction method is proven to be both effective and efficient. DC microgrid has attracted more and more attention due to its unique characteristics, but the development of a dc microgrid is also facing some challenges, such as interruption and isolation of short-circuit fault currents. Therefore, the dc circuit breaker plays an important role in ensuring the normal work of a dc microgrid. In this paper, a novel bidirectional dc solid-state circuit breaker is proposed to realize the bidirectional flow of energy, which ensures the higher operating efficiency of the dc microgrid. Compared with other solid-state circuit breakers, the proposed novel topology has simpler structure, common ground, and fewer components. First, this paper makes a detailed analysis of the different working stages of the circuit when the fault occurs in combination with simulation results of the circuit topology. Then, the standard of selecting the components through the calculation and analysis of the circuit is given in this paper. Nonlinear transmission lines (NLTLs) are passive networks with the capability of modulating baseband pulses. These networks are used for generating RF pulses at high-power levels. NLTLs have a unique performance in high-power RF pulse generation among all the generators based on the solid-state technology. A high-power rectangular pulse is injected to the line, gradually evolved into an oscillatory pulse while propagating through the network, and finally, in the form of a high-power RF pulse, is delivered to the load. Properly terminating an NLTL, in order to transfer the maximum available RF power to the load, is an important problem. In this paper, an accurate analysis is presented, which gives a closed-form formula for the output RF power in lossy NLTLs. Using this analysis, optimal resistive terminating load for RF applications of NLTLs is extracted. The output central frequency is also investigated in this paper. This article investigates energy storage requirements in the submodules of a class of converters known as hybrid cascaded modular multilvel converters (HC-MMCs). The complexities arising from the usage of different submodule types and their non-conventional arrangement necessitate detailed analysis of submodule capacitor voltage ripples, which are needed for development of guidelines for sizing submodule capacitors. This paper characterizes electric charge variations in the submodule capacitors to derive expressions for capacitor voltage ripples, and to determine the energy storage requirements of the converter. Background and Objectives: Due to the increased sensitive loads, improving power quality in distribution grids by custom power tools is one of the important fields of electrical engineering. This paper proposes a new kind of three-phase three-wire dynamic voltage restorer (without including storage sources or DC link) and also its control method. Methods: The proposed structure includes an AC/AC converter, low-pass filters at the input and output sides, and three-phase injection transformers. The control system is based on the combination of feedback and feedforward control that its advantages are high speed, good response quality, and very simple implementation. To overcome the harmonics raised from AC/AC converter switching on the main line, a SOGI-PLL has been used. Also, SOGI-PLL operates independently on each phase so that the asymmetric voltage variations can be identified. Results: The proposed control method is capable to compensate the power quality problems such as voltage sag, swell, and harmonics in balanced and unbalanced conditions. The detailed modelling and design of the proposed controller are verified through computer simulations and experimental results under different operating conditions. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed control strategy can compensate the power quality events as close as possible to the desired values under different operation modes. Conclusion: In this paper, a three-phase three-wire dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) was assessed using direct AC/AC converters without a supply source and DC link. A control system based on combined feedback and feedforward control (CFBFFC) and SOGI-PLL has been proposed for the DVR. The simulation results on a three-phase 20kV system as well as the experimental results obtained from a single-phase 220V system verified the performance of the DVR and the control system. This paper reviews different types of capacitors and auxiliary source circuit topologies and presents an introduction to control strategies used for circuit applications reducing DC-BUS capacitance. The paper argues in favor of replacing bulky electrolytic capacitors in capacitor-supported power electronic systems with auxiliary source circuits. DC-BUS capacitors are widely used in grid-tied power converters (rectifiers) and utilized for power balance, voltage ripple limitation, and short-term energy storage. The electrolyte capacitor is the Achilles heel of any rectifier and power converter due to its higher rate of failure than other circuitry components. Auxiliary source circuits are key components to qualitatively improve the reliability of the DC links, where they divert the instantaneous pulsating power into extra reliable storage components. Unlike previous work, this review serves to provide a clear picture of an auxiliary source circuit design, in favor of optimal solution selection according to the specific application. Therefore, energy storage components (capacitors), topologies, and control strategies of auxiliary source circuits are comprehensively reviewed in this paper. The calculation of the main circuit parameters is the basic part of the engineering design for high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems. Compared to the conventional line commutated converter (LCC), the application of the capacitor commutated converter (CCC) can reduce the probability of commutation failures and the shunt capacitor reactive compensation. This paper proposes a calculation method of main circuit parameters for the CCC-based HVDC system. Firstly, the topology of a CCC-HVDC transmission system is described. Secondly, based on the steady-state mathematical model of the CCC, the paper proposes the calculation method of the commutation capacitor to satisfy the system requirements, and the calculation formulas of the main circuit parameters are also given. Then the calculation procedure of the main circuit steady-state parameters is described in detail considering system parameters, control modes, calculation tolerances and operating conditions. Finally, a two-terminal ±500 kV/3000 MW LCC-CCC HVDC transmission system is presented to verify the validity of the main circuit parameter calculation method. Due to fewer conduction devices in operating condition, the bridgeless power factor correction (PFC) converter is more efficient than the traditional PFC circuit. However, to achieve a low output voltage ripple on the DC side, a large electrolytic capacitor must be connected in parallel to the output end. To reduce the value of capacitance, this paper proposes a dual-boost bridgeless PFC converter with a bidirectional buck/boost power decoupling converter in the latter stage. The bidirectional converter absorbs double-line-frequency ripple, lowering the power pulsation at the output end while realizing power decoupling. The one-cycle control is adopted in bridgeless PFC converter, so that the input current can follow the input voltage to achieve power factor correction and decrease harmonic pollution. The power decoupling circuit is designed with a voltage outer loop using PI control and a current inner loop using model predictive current control, which alleviates the output voltage fluctuation caused by the reduction of the capacitance value of the filter capacitor, for the purpose of realizing non-electrolytic capacitor. Many recent studies have revealed that PoL (Point of Load) converters' output capacitors are a paramount component from a reliability point of view. To receive the maximum degree of reliability in many applications, designers are often advised to derate this capacitor—as such, a careful comprehending of it is required to determine the converter's overall parameters. PoL converters are commonly found in many electronic systems. Their most important requirements are a stable output voltage with load current variation, good temperature stability, low output ripple voltage, and high efficiency and reliability. If the electronic system in question must be portable, a small footprint and volume are also important considerations—both of which have recently been well accomplished in eGaN transistor technologies. This paper provides details on how derating an output capacitor—specifically, a conductive tantalum polymer surface-mount chip, as this type of capacitor represented a step forward in miniaturization and reliability over previously existing wet electrolytic capacitors—used within a discrete eGaN-FET-based PoL buck converter determines the best performance and the highest MTBF. A setup based on an EPC eGaN FET transistor enclosed in a 9059/30 V evaluation board with a 12 V input voltage/1.2 V output voltage was tested in order to achieve the study's main scope. Typical electrical performance and reliability data are often provided for customers by manufacturers through technical papers; this kind of public data is often selected to show the capacitors in a favorable light—still, they provide much useful information. In this paper, the capacitor derating process was presented to give a basic overview of the reliability performance characteristics of tantalum polymer capacitor when used within a DC–DC buck converter's output filter. The aim of the present paper is to investigate the possibility of using the dipole dimer as water model in describing the electrical double layer capacitor capacitance behaviors. Several points are confirmed. First, the use of the dipole dimer water model enables several experimental phenomena of aqueous electrical double layer capacitance to be achievable: suppress the differential capacitance values gravely overestimated by the hard sphere water model and continuum medium water model, respectively; reproduce the negative correlation effect between the differential capacitance and temperature, insensitivity of the differential capacitance to bulk electrolyte concentration, and camel–shaped capacitance–voltage curves; and more quantitatively describe the camel peak position of the capacitance–voltage curve and its dependence on the counter-ion size. Second, we fully illustrate that the electric dipole plays an irreplaceable role in reproducing the above experimentally confirmed capacitance behaviors and the previous hard sphere water model without considering the electric dipole is simply not competent. The novelty of the paper is that it shows the potential of the dipole dimer water model in helping reproduce experimentally verified aqueous electric double layer capacitance behaviors. Power transmission lines are vital components of today's power systems. These power lines transmit the electricity produced in power plants in high volume and with very low losses to distant areas so that it can be reached consumers through distribution networks. In fact, these lines are the intermediary between major energy producers and distribution networks. Accordingly, these transmission lines are of great importance and must be protected appropriately with a suitable protection system. Distance relays are widely used to protect these lines due to their convenient coordination characteristics and simplicity. High impedance faults (HIFs) can be a critical challenge for distance relays due to their low current amplitude and similarity to conventional events in power systems, such as capacitive bank switching. Therefore, this paper presents a new approach based on the instantaneous frequency variations obtained from the current RMS to detect HIFs. This method detects HIFs by calculating a detection index (DI) and considering a threshold value. The proposed method was tested using DIgSILENT and MATLAB software in an IEEE standard 39-bus network. The presented results evidently demonstrate that the proposed method is suitable for detecting HIF and low impedance faults (LIFs). In addition, this method has a proper performance during capacitor bank switching and can well distinguish between HIFs and capacitive bank switching. The risk of unstable subsynchronous oscillations (SSO) in DFIG-based wind parks radially connected to transmission lines with series capacitive compensation is typically assessed with numerous electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations, which is a time-consuming process. However, not all operating scenarios present risk of SSO and require such a detailed investigation. This paper proposes two charts based on impedance equivalents of wind generators obtained through frequency scans to quickly map which combinations of parameters can create unstable SSOs and which combinations are risk-free. With the information, engineers can immediately filter out scenarios with no risk of instability and conduct detailed studies on fewer scenarios that are truly critical. These charts can be obtained with simple equations that use only information readily available in practice to engineers, without the need to run any computer simulation. The charts also reveal the key operating conditions that can increase the risk of an unstable SSO and provide real-time quantitative insights into how close a wind park is to an instability. Multilevel converters (MLCs) are pioneers in the field of electrical energy conversion. From the classification of MLCs, modular multilevel converter (MMC) is top-rated due to its attractive structure and performance. The modular nature and no need for isolated DC resources are two significant advantages of this converter. However, the need for many sensors to control its performance is a considerable drawback. In addition, the internal circulating current in the MMC causes losses, decreases efficiency, and increases the voltage ripple of capacitors. This paper proposes combining a new capacitor voltage sorting method and an open-loop controller based on arms energy estimation to control the MMC using two voltage sensors in the arms and one current sensor at the output. The proposed method ensures continuous voltage balancing of the capacitors and removes multiple voltage sensors from sub-modules (SMs). This paper deals with the modeling, hardware results and model validation by measurements of a VSC assisted resonant current (VARC) dc circuit breaker (CB) and the application within a future network by simulation. The newly emerging VARC dc CB can be used as a solution for the protection of offshore multi-terminal HVDC (MTDC) grids. In this paper, the proposed VARC dc CB is modeled in detail in a PSCAD environment, by taking into account dielectric strength of the vacuum gap, high-frequency current quenching ability and parasitic components. The PSCAD-model is then verified by data from the testing of a 27 kV VARC dc CB prototype with maximum current interruption capability of 10 kA. Additionally, the initial transient interruption voltage and current slope at zero-crossing during the interruption are analyzed. With respect to scaling to a higher voltage level, three types of series connected modules are presented and the performances are compared. The performance of the series connected modules is simulated in a model of a 4-terminal HVDC grid. DC shipboard power systems have been considered as a promising solution for stricter environmental regulations on ships due to their main benefits in fuel savings with variable speed engines and easy integration of energy storage systems. In order to employ the dc solution in the shipboard power systems, the dc power systems have to be protected from a system fault with protection selectivity to minimize impacts of the fault or to avoid other undesirable situations in the system. For low-voltage dc shipboard power systems, a three-level protection has been proposed: 1) fast action (first)—bus separation by solid-state dc bus-tie switch; 2) medium action (second)—feeder protection by high-speed fuse; and 3) slow action (third)—generator–rectifier fault controls. This paper proposes a new method by means of additional bus capacitance added in main dc buses to help reliable operation of the three-level protection. The principle of the proposed method is introduced and the sizing of the additional bus capacitance is addressed in this paper. With the modeling of the dc shipboard power systems, the analyses of voltage drops for the bus separation failure and fault clearing time for the feeder protection are carried out to verify the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method not only mitigates the voltage drop for the bus separation failure, but also achieves the selectivity and the sensitivity for the feeder protection. The rise for innovation in the electrical industry is strongly driven by development of new materials. Features of new materials are changing design paradigms for engineers. In this paper, the electrical properties of films of cellulose nanocrystals were measured. It was found that humidity affects the dielectric strength on the cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). The dielectric strength was similar to the value of the industrial dielectric paper. The addition of plasticizer improved the flexibility of the material but lowered the dielectric strength. The films of CNC had an ordered arrangement, as suggested by the iridescence shown by them. The humidity content of the films was measured by thermogravimetric analysis. The series bridge converter (SBC) is a modular multilevel converter (MMC) recently developed to enhance power density in high-voltage high-power applications. The MMC is a well-established solution, widely researched, and exploited in practical HVdc connections, thanks to its high power quality and high efficiency. However, the main limitation of the MMC is the relatively large energy storage, also due to the fact that power ripples in the submodule capacitors include a component at the fundamental ac frequency. As a result, volume becomes critical in applications such as offshore or city center in-feeds, where space is restricted and expensive. The SBC offers a more compact footprint by exploiting a series connection on the dc side and by operating the submodules with rectified waveforms, thus moving the minimum component of the instantaneous power to twice the ac fundamental and reducing capacitors size. The drawback of the converter is a more complex energy control compared to the MMC. This paper proposes the first experimental validation of the SBC, using a 2-kW laboratory-scale prototype. Four-level hybrid-clamped inverter is a newly proposed topology that can operate under a wide voltage range without switches connected in series. However, when it is applied in medium voltage high power conversions, the flying capacitors in each phase will occupy a huge volume and a high switching frequency is required to restrain the voltage ripples. In order to overcome this drawback, a four-level active neutral-point clamped inverter is discussed in this paper, which consists of only six switches and no diodes or flying capacitors are required. In order to balance the neutral-point voltages under the full power factor and modulation index range, a capacitor voltage balance method based on carrier-overlapped pulsewidth modulation is proposed in this paper. The upper and lower dc-link capacitor voltages are balanced by zero-sequence voltage injection and the central dc-link capacitor voltage is balanced by adjusting the duty cycles of switching signals slightly. A new single stage three-phase ac–dc converter with four switches and galvanic isolation is proposed in this paper. The new converter is simple and uses fewer switches than previously proposed ac–dc converters of the same type. It is a bridgeless converter that can operate with continuous input current and with any pulsewidth modulated method suitable for a standard three-phase six-switch voltage source rectifier. In this paper, the operation, control, analysis, and design of the proposed converter are explained and its features are discussed.
