Following the 2nd release of the “Emerging PV reports,” the best achievements in the performance of emerging photovoltaic devices in diverse emerging photovoltaic research subjects are summarized, as reported in peer‐reviewed articles in academic journals since August 2021. Updated graphs, tables, and analyses are provided with several performance parameters, e.g., power conversion efficiency, open‐circuit voltage, short‐circuit current density, fill factor, light utilization efficiency, and stability test energy yield. These parameters are presented as a function of the photovoltaic bandgap energy and the average visible transmittance for each technology and application, and are put into perspective using, e.g., the detailed balance efficiency limit. The 3rd installment of the “Emerging PV reports” extends the scope toward triple junction solar cells.

In addition to their attractive technological applications in photovoltaics and light emitters, the perovskite family of semiconductors has recently emerged as an excellent excitonic material for fundamental studies. Specifically, the 2D hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite (HOIP) offers the added advantage of room temperature investigations owing to their large exciton binding energy. In this work, we strongly couple excitons in 2D HOIP crystals to planar microcavity photons sustaining exciton-polaritons under ambient conditions resulting in a Rabi splitting of 290 meV. Dark excitons directly pump the polariton branch along its dispersion in resonance with the Stokes shifted emission state (radiative pumping), creating a high density of polaritons at higher in-plane momentum (k||). We further probe the nonlinear polariton dispersion dynamics at varying input laser fluence, which indicates efficient polariton-polariton scattering and decay to k|| = 0 from higher k||. The observation of Stokes shift-assisted energy exchange of dark states with lower polaritons coupled with evidence of efficient polariton-polariton scattering makes 2D HOIPs an attractive platform to study exciton-polariton many-body physics and Bose-Einstein like condensation (BEC) at room temperature.

Photocatalysis for organic synthesis is a tool capable of C–C, C–O and C–N bond transformations. This technology has the potential to transform the chemical manufacturing industry and support growing demand for chemical feedstocks. Compared to traditional catalysis, photocatalysis can access alternative reaction pathways that lower the overall energy requirement and operate at or near ambient conditions. A key challenge is the delivery of photoenergy at the scale required for rapid and efficient operation of the catalyst. The development of efficient, broad-spectrum light harvesting devices that funnel light energy to a catalyst, along with catalyst design to selectively enable high-energy reactions, are necessary steps towards solar fuels and feedstocks. This perspective highlights some recent advances in photocatalysis and advocates for expanding the scope of photocatalysis for large-scale industrial applications.

Organic photovoltaic (OPV) efficiencies continue to rise, raising their prospects for solar energy conversion. However, researchers have long considered how to suppress the loss of free carriers by recombination-poor diffusion and significant Coulombic attraction can cause electrons and holes to encounter each other at interfaces close to where they were photogenerated. Using femtosecond transient spectroscopies, we report the nanosecond grow-in of a large transient Stark effect, caused by nanoscale electric fields of ∼487 kV/cm between photogenerated free carriers in the device active layer. We find that particular morphologies of the active layer lead to an energetic cascade for charge carriers, suppressing pathways to recombination, which is ∼2000 times less than predicted by Langevin theory. This in turn leads to the buildup of electric charge in donor and acceptor domains-away from the interface-resistant to bimolecular recombination. Interestingly, this signal is only experimentally obvious in thick films due to the different scaling of electroabsorption and photoinduced absorption signals in transient absorption spectroscopy. Rather than inhibiting device performance, we show that devices up to 600 nm thick maintain efficiencies of >8% because domains can afford much higher carrier densities. These observations suggest that with particular nanoscale morphologies the bulk heterojunction can go beyond its established role in charge photogeneration and can act as a capacitor, where adjacent free charges are held away from the interface and can be protected from bimolecular recombination.

Fair and meaningful device per- formance comparison among luminescent solar concentrator- photovoltaic (LSC-PV) reports cannot be realized without a gen- eral consensus on reporting stan- dards in LSC-PV research. There- fore, it is imperative to adopt standardized characterization protocols for these emerging types of PV devices that are consistent with other PV devices. This commentary highlights several common limitations in LSC literature and summarizes the best practices moving for- ward to harmonize with standard PV reporting, considering the greater nuances present with LSC-PV. Based on these prac- tices, a checklist of actionable items is provided to help stan- dardize the characterization/re- porting protocols and offer a set of baseline expectations for au- thors, reviewers, and editors. The general consensus combined with the checklist will ultimately guide LSC-PV research towards reliable and meaningful ad- vances.

Charge transfer (CT) between donors and acceptors following photoexcitation of organic photovoltaics (OPVs) gives rise to bound electron–hole pairs across the donor–acceptor interface, known as CT states. While these states are essential to charge separation, they are also a source of energy loss. As a result of reduced overlap between electron and hole wavefunctions, CT states are influenced by details of the film morphology and molecular structure. Here, we describe several important strategies for tuning the energy level and dynamics of the CT state and approaches that can enhance their dissociation efficiency into free charges. Furthermore, we provide an overview of recent physical insights into the key parameters that significantly reduce the Frenkel-to-CT energy offset and recombination energy losses while preserving a high charge-generation yield. Our analysis leads to critical morphological and molecular design strategies for achieving efficient, low-energy-loss OPVs.

A variety of unconventional materials, including biological nanostructures, organic and hybrid semiconductors, as well as monolayer, and other low-dimensional systems, are actively explored. They are usually incompatible with standard lithographic techniques that use harsh organic solvents and other detrimental processing. Here, a new class of green and gentle lithographic resists, compatible with delicate materials and capable of both top-down and bottom-up fabrication routines is developed. To demonstrate the excellence of this approach, devices with sub-micron features are fabricated on organic semiconductor crystals and individual animal's brain microtubules. Such structures are created for the first time, thanks to the genuinely water-based lithography, which opens an avenue for the thorough research of unconventional delicate materials at the nanoscale.

Rubrene is a promising and archetypal organic semiconductor owing to its high reported hole mobility. However, this high mobility only exists in its crystalline state, with orders of magnitude reduction in disordered films. Thus, as it pertains to thin film polycrystalline rubrene, it is important to understand structure and the presence of disordered regions at grain boundaries. Here, we use scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) to investigate polycrystalline rubrene thin films with either platelet or spherulite morphology. The STXM images allow us to distinguish and quantify the arrangement of the local structure in the crystal. The analysis suggests that the platelet film has more oriented molecules in the crystal than in the spherulite phase. Also, at spherulite grain boundaries, we reveal a high number of misaligned molecules compared to the smooth boundary in the platelet case, with grain boundary sinuosity of 0.045 ± 0.002 and 0.139 ± 0.002 μm for the platelet and spherulite cases, respectively, which help to explain the higher mobility in the former case.

International audience; In this work, we demonstrate several organic amorphous donor−acceptor systems that exhibit sub-bandgap features over a more than 2 eV spectral range. An in-depth study of one of these systems, NPB:HAT-CN (NPB is N,N′-di(1-naphthyl)-N,N′-diphenyl-(1,1′-biphenyl)-4,4′-diamine and HAT-CN is 1,4,5,8,9,11-hexaazatriphenylenehexacarbonitrile), reveals that the broad sub-bandgap features are attributed to multiple electronic charge transfer (CT) state transitions, broadened by energetic disorder sourcing from the fluctuations of intramolecular conformations and by the disordered intermolecular environment. These unique CT features originate from an unconventional donor and acceptor selection that reveals new insight about photocurrent generation and nonradiative recombination. Unlike materials employed in high performing organic solar cells, the materials studied here feature large optical energy gaps with very large frontier orbital energy level offsets, creating high bandgap devices with low open-circuit voltage. In addition to multiple electronic CT levels, we reveal that the internal quantum efficiency of these multiple CT transitions is not constant but photon energy dependent and with photoluminescence that originates primarily from the second lowest electronic CT state implying slow (relative to radiative and nonradiative rates) internal conversion within the CT manifold. Overall, this class of donor−acceptor pairs provides an opportunity to probe CT states in unique ways to potentially unravel their role in carrier generation−recombination and energy loss mechanisms. ■ INTRODUCTION With more than 15% power conversion efficiency recently achieved 1 and coupled with the ability to be grown on flexible substrates on a large scale with low-cost fabrication techniques, organic solar cells are making a strong case for energy conversion applications. Most advances in power conversion efficiency are the result of impressive material and interface engineering and innovation. However, due to the lack of a complete understanding and consensus of carrier generation and recombination processes as well as loss mechanisms at charge generating donor−acceptor (D-A) interfaces, 2 the actual limits of organic solar cell performance remain unknown. In this context, intermolecular charge transfer (CT) excitations at D−A interfaces play an important role in the photophysical processes and energy losses of organic solar cells. 3−6 In order to understand how carrier generation and recombination are affected by CT states, a better comprehension of their origin and energetic distribution is crucial. The ability to undergo spin-allowed exciton multiplication makes singlet fission materials promising for photovoltaic applications. Here, we examine the separation of correlated triplet pairs, 1(T…T), in polycrystalline pentacene films via temperature-dependent transient absorption spectroscopy. Single wavelength analysis reveals a profound delay in 1(T…T) dynamics. Moreover, the dynamics of 1(T…T) exhibit temperature dependence, whereas other features show no discernable temperature dependence. Previous literatures have suggested that correlated triplet separation is mediated by a thermally activated hopping process. Surprisingly, we found that the time constants governing triplet pair separation display two distinct temperature-dependent regimes of triplet transport. The high temperature regime follows a thermally activated hopping mechanism. The experimentally derived reorganization energy and electronic coupling is verified by density matrix renormalization group quantum chemical calculations. In addition, we evaluated the low temperature regime and show that the trend can be modelled by a Miller–Abrahams-type model that incorporates the effects of energetic disorder. We conclude that the correlated triplet pair separation is mediated by thermally activated hopping or a disorder driven Miller–Abrahams-type mechanism at high and low temperature, respectively. We observe that crossover between two regimes occurs ∼226 K. We find the time constant for triplet–triplet energy transfer to be 1.8 ps at ambient temperature and 21 ps at 77 K.

Next-generation displays and lighting technologies require efficient optical sources that combine brightness, color purity, stability, substrate flexibility. Metal halide perovskites have potential use in a wide range of applications, for they possess excellent charge transport, bandgap tunability and, in the most promising recent optical source materials, intense and efficient luminescence. Understanding the stability of metal halide perovskite (MHP) surfaces is of considerable interest for the development of devices based on these materials. We present here a vacuum-based study of the surface potential and response to illumination of two different types of perovskite films, methylammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr3) and the 2D Ruddlesden–Popper phase butylammonium lead iodide (BA2PbI4, n = 1), using Kelvin probe-based contact potential difference and surface photovoltage measurements. We show that supraband gap light irradiation can induce the loss of halide species, which adsorb on the Kelvin probe tip, inducing quasi-irreversible changes of the MHP surface and tip work functions. If undetected, this can lead to misinterpretations of the MHP surface potential. For instance, organic, dye-sensitized and some perovskite solar cells are considered in building integration, greenhouses, wearable and indoors, thereby motivating research on flexible, transparent, semitransparent, and multi-junction PVs. Nevertheless, it can be very time consuming to find or develop an up-to-date overview over the state-of-the-art performance for these systems and applications. Two important resources for record research cells efficiencies are the National Renewable Energy Laboratory chart and the efficiency tables compiled biannually by Martin Green and colleagues. Both publications provide an effective coverage over the established technologies, bridging research and industry. An alternative approach is proposed here summarizing the best reports in the diverse research subjects for emerging PVs. Best performance parameters are provided as a function of the photovoltaic bandgap energy for each technology and application, and are put into perspective using, e.g., the Shockley-Queisser limit. In all cases, the reported data correspond to published and/or properly described certified results, with enough details provided for prospective data reproduction. Additionally, the stability test energy yield (STEY) is included as an analysis parameter among state-of-the-art emerging PVs.

Surface defects acutely influence perovskite solar cell performance. In this issue of Matter, Wang et al. developed a novel and compelling molecular “defect indicator” approach, notable for minimizing surface defects and evaluating passivation strategies.

Metal halide perovskites are the first solution processed semiconductors that can compete in their functionality with conventional semiconductors, such as silicon. Over the past several years, perovskite semiconductors have reported breakthroughs in various optoelectronic devices, such as solar cells, photodetectors, light emitting and memory devices, and so on. Until now, perovskite semiconductors face challenges regarding their stability, reproducibility, and toxicity. In this Roadmap, we combine the expertise of chemistry, physics, and device engineering from leading experts in the perovskite research community to focus on the fundamental material properties, the fabrication methods, characterization and photophysical properties, perovskite devices, and current challenges in this field. We develop a comprehensive overview of the current state-of-the-art and offer readers an informed perspective of where this field is heading and what challenges we have to overcome to get to successful commercialization. published

International audience; In an effort to gain a comprehensive picture of the interfacial states in bulk heterojunction solar cells, we provide a combined experimental−theoretical analysis of the energetics and dynamics of low-lying electronic charge-transfer (CT) states in donor:acceptor blends with a large frontier orbital energy offset. By varying the blend composition and temperature, we unravel the static and dynamic contributions to the disordered density of states (DOS) of the CT-state manifold and assess their recombination to the ground state. Namely, we find that static disorder (conformational and electrostatic) shapes the CT DOS and that fast nonradiative recombination crops the low-energy tail of the distribution probed by external quantum efficiency (EQE) measurements (thereby largely contributing to voltage losses). Our results then question the standard practice of extracting microscopic parameters such as exciton energy and energetic disorder from EQE.

Strong light-matter coupling is emerging as a fascinating way to tune optical properties and modify the photophysics of molecular systems. In this work, we studied a molecular chromophore under strong coupling with the optical mode of a Fabry-Perot cavity resonant to the first electronic absorption band. Using femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy, we investigated the transient response of the cavity-coupled molecules upon photoexcitation resonant to the upper and lower polaritons. We identified an excited state absorption from upper and lower polaritons to a state at the energy of the second cavity mode. Quantum mechanical calculations of the many-molecule energy structure of cavity polaritons suggest assignment of this state as a two-particle polaritonic state with optically allowed transitions from the upper and lower polaritons. We provide new physical insight into the role of two-particle polaritonic states in explaining transient signatures in hybrid light-matter coupling systems consistent with analogous many-body systems.

Metal halide perovskite semiconductors with small exciton binding energy have been widely used in perovskite solar cells and achieved rapid progress in terms of device performance. However, the strong excitonic nature of two-dimensional (2D) perovskites with small n values remains underexploited (n represents the number of inorganic monolayer sheets sandwiched between bulky organic cation layers). In this work, we report experimental evidence of donor/acceptor charge-transfer (CT) states formed at 2D metal halide perovskite/organic semiconductor heterojunctions, with a corresponding increase in photocurrent production for these excitonic materials. Furthermore, it is found that the size of the organic cation in the 2D perovskite layer plays a critical role in the CT process. The ability to dissociate excitons in 2D perovskites by interfacing with an organic semiconductor in a donor/acceptor configuration opens up new opportunities for exploiting the excitonic nature of low-dimensional perovskites in appli...

Summary Despite the demonstrated high efficiency of perovskite solar cells and light-emitting devices, the understanding of the intrinsic stability of perovskites is far from complete. In this work, using an ultrasensitive, exfoliated 2D perovskite single-crystal sheet/graphene heterostructure device, we reveal spontaneous iodide loss as an important degradation pathway of 2D perovskite single crystals, which n-dopes the perovskite semiconductor by generating positively charged iodide vacancies. Furthermore, we show that covering perovskites with graphene can suppress the iodide loss, significantly improving perovskite stability. A perovskite phototransistor is demonstrated with a graphene/2D perovskite/graphene structure, which shows no degradation after 75 days. Our work not only provides important insights for future stable perovskite optoelectronic device development, but also demonstrates the potential of graphene as a promising sensitive diagnostic tool for device and material degradation studies.

Owing to their exceptional semiconducting properties, hybrid inorganic-organic perovskites show great promise as photovoltaic absorbers. In these materials, long-range diffusion of charge carriers allows for most of the photogenerated carriers to contribute to the photovoltaic efficiency. Here, time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) microscopy is used to directly probe ambipolar carrier diffusion and recombination kinetics in hybrid perovskites. This technique is applied to thin films of methylammonium lead tri-iodide $(\mathrm{MAPb}{\mathrm{I}}_{3})$ obtained with two different fabrication routes, methylammonium lead tribromide $(\mathrm{MAPbB}{\mathrm{r}}_{3})$, and an alloy of formamidinium lead tri-iodide and methylammonium lead bromide $\mathrm{F}{\mathrm{A}}_{0.85}\mathrm{M}{\mathrm{A}}_{0.15}\mathrm{Pb}{({\mathrm{I}}_{0.85}\mathrm{B}{\mathrm{r}}_{0.15})}_{3}$. Average diffusion coefficients in the films leading to the highest device efficiencies and longest lifetimes, i.e., in $\mathrm{F}{\mathrm{A}}_{0.85}\mathrm{M}{\mathrm{A}}_{0.15}\mathrm{Pb}{({\mathrm{I}}_{0.85}\mathrm{B}{\mathrm{r}}_{0.15})}_{3}$ and acetonitrile-processed $\mathrm{MAPb}{\mathrm{I}}_{3}$, are found to be several orders of magnitude lower than in the other films. Further examination of the time dependence shows strong evidence for nondiffusive transport. In particular, acetonitrile-processed $\mathrm{MAPb}{\mathrm{I}}_{3}$ shows distinct diffusion regimes on short and long timescales with an effective diffusion constant varying over 2 orders of magnitude. Our results also highlight the fact that increases in carrier lifetime in this class of materials are not necessarily concomitant with increased diffusion lengths and that the PL quantum efficiency under solar cell operating conditions is a greater indication of material, and ultimately device, quality.

We demonstrate an upscalable approach to increase outcoupling in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) fabricated on flexible substrates. The outcoupling enhancement is enabled by introducing a thin film of microporous polyimide on the backside of silver nanowire (AgNW) electrodes embedded in neat colorless polyimide. This porous polyimide film, prepared by immersion precipitation, utilizes a large index contrast between the polyimide host and randomly distributed air voids, resulting in broadband haze (>75%). In addition, the composite polyimide/AgNW scattering substrate inherits the high thermal (>360 °C), chemical, and mechanical stability of polyimides. The outcoupling efficiency of the composite scattering substrate is studied via optical characterization of the composite substrate and electron microscopy of the scattering film. The flexible scattering substrates compared to glass/indium tin oxide (ITO) allows for a 74% enhancement in external quantum efficiency (EQE) for a phosphorescent green OLED, and 68% EQE enhancement for a phosphorescent white OLED. The outcoupling enhancement remains unharmed after 5000 bending cycles at a 2 mm bending radius. Moreover, the color uniformity over viewing angles is improved, an important feature for lighting applications.

We demonstrate the use of fossilized diatoms (diatomaceous earth) as light traps in regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and fullerene derivative [6,6]-phenyl-C60-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) solar cells. Diatoms, the most common type of phytoplankton found in nature, are optimized for light absorption through millions of years of adaptive evolution. They are also an earth-abundant source of silica that can be incorporated into polymer solar cells without the need for complicated processing. Here we establish protocols dispersing the diatomaceous earth throughout the P3HT:PCBM active layer with characterization by optical and current-voltage measurements. We show that through the addition of diatomaceous earth, we can achieve the same power conversion efficiencies as standard thickness cells while using 36% thinner active layers. We find that adding the diatomaceous earth acts as a scattering center and textures the silver back contact, contributing to increases in the optical path length within devices. Results from this study open up pathways for incorporating hierarchical materials from nature into energy conversion devices.

The smooth surface of crystalline rubrene films formed through an abrupt heating process provides a valuable platform to study organic homoepitaxy. By varying growth rate and substrate temperature, we are able to manipulate the onset of a transition from layer-by-layer to island growth modes, while the crystalline thin films maintain a remarkably smooth surface (less than 2.3 nm root-mean-square roughness) even with thick (80 nm) adlayers. We also uncover evidence of point and line defect formation in these films, indicating that homoepitaxy under our conditions is not at equilibrium or strain-free. Point defects that are resolved as screw dislocations can be eliminated under closer-to-equilibrium conditions, whereas we are not able to eliminate the formation of line defects within our experimental constraints at adlayer thicknesses above ∼25 nm. We are, however, able to eliminate these line defects by growing on a bulk single crystal of rubrene, indicating that the line defects are a result of strain built into the thin film template. We utilize electron backscatter diffraction, which is a first for organics, to investigate the origin of these line defects and find that they preferentially occur parallel to the (002) plane, which is in agreement with expectations based on calculated surface energies of various rubrene crystal facets. By combining the benefits of crystallinity, low surface roughness, and thickness-tunability, this system provides an important study of attributes valuable to high-performance organic electronic devices.

© The Royal Society of Chemistry 2017. Conventional solar cells absorb photons with energy above the bandgap of the active layer while sub-bandgap photons are unharvested. One way to overcome this loss is to capture the low energy light in the triplet state of a molecule capable of undergoing triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA), which pools the energy of two triplet states into one high energy singlet state that can then be utilized. This mechanism underlies the function of an organic intermediate band solar cell (IBSC). Here, we report a solid-state organic IBSC that shows enhanced photocurrent derived from TTA that converts sub-bandgap light into charge carriers. Femtosecond resolution transient absorption spectroscopy and delayed fluorescence spectroscopy provide evidence for the triplet sensitization and upconversion mechanisms, while external quantum efficiency measurements in the presence of a broadband background light demonstrate that sub-bandgap performance enhancements are achievable in this device. The solid-state architecture introduced in this work serves as an alternative to previously demonstrated solution-based IBSCs, and is a compelling model for future research efforts in this area.

The remarkable optoelectronic properties of metal halide perovskites have generated intense research interest over the last few years. The ability to control and manipulate the crystallisation and stoichiometry of perovskite thin-films has allowed for impressive strides in the development of highly efficient perovskite solar cells. However, being able to effectively modify the interfaces of metal halide perovskites, and to controllably p- or n-type dope the surfaces, may be key to further improvements in the efficiency and long-term stability of these devices. In this study, we use surface doping of the mixed-cation, mixed-halide perovskite FA0.85MA0.15Pb(I0.85Br0.15)3 (FA – formamidinium; MA – methylammonium) to improve the hole extraction from the perovskite solar cell. By treating the surface of the perovskite film with a strongly oxidizing molybdenum tris(dithiolene) complex, we achieve a shift in the work function that is indicative of p-doping, and a twofold increase in the total conductivity throughout the film. We probe the associated interfacial chemistry through photoelectron and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies and confirm that charge-transfer occurs between the perovskite and dopant complex. The resulting p-doped interface constitutes a homojunction with increased hole-selectivity. With charge-selective layers, we show that this surface doping enhances the device performance of perovskite solar cells resulting in steady-state efficiencies approaching 21%. Finally, we demonstrate that a surface treatment with this dopant produces the same effect as the commonly employed additive 4-tert butylpyridine (tBP), allowing us to achieve “tBP-free” devices with steady-state efficiencies of over 20%, and enhanced thermal stability as compared to devices processed using tBP. Our findings therefore demonstrate that molecular doping is a feasible route to tune and control the surface properties of metal halide perovskites.

Metal halide perovskite materials (ABX3) employed in optoelectronic devices have rapidly achieved high efficiencies. Their performance can be partially attributed to intrinsic defects being electronically benign. Despite the inertness of defects within the bulk, such as ion vacancies, solution processing additives and surface passivation have been shown to enhance material properties. Thus, detailed knowledge of additive chemistry is desirous to elucidate passivation mechanisms and facilitate further improvements. In particular, the soft Lewis acid nature of Pb2+ has been overlooked heretofore as a key feature of amine-lead chemistry in perovskite preparations. In Part I of this study, we demonstrate that acid–base reactions between PbI2 and aliphatic amines yield alkylammonium and Pb–alkylamide species. The alkylammonium and alkylamide products are capable of occupying A-site cation and anion vacancies, respectively. Subsequent incorporation of these impurities at perovskite crystal surfaces or formation of non-perovskite phase inclusions likely influence the perovskite layer morphology and properties which are investigated in Part II. These results reveal a new mechanism by which optoelectronic properties of perovskites can be chemically modified. Additionally, the general concept of acidification of organic molecules solvated to Pb2+ promoting unexpected reactions is applied to explain amine reactions with other additives, such as formic acid. Understanding acid–base reactions induced by PbI2 complexing to protic molecules is useful to comprehend and predict defect/impurity chemistry in a wide variety of perovskite precursor formulations.

Near-infrared (NIR) light-emitting diodes (LEDs), with emission wavelengths between 800 and 950 nm, are useful for various applications, e.g., night-vision devices, optical communication, and medical treatments. Yet, devices using thin film materials like organic semiconductors and lead based colloidal quantum dots face certain fundamental challenges that limit the improvement of external quantum efficiency (EQE), making the search of alternative NIR emitters important for the community. In this work, efficient NIR LEDs with tunable emission from 850 to 950 nm, using lead-tin (Pb-Sn) halide perovskite as emitters are demonstrated. The best performing device exhibits an EQE of 5.0% with a peak emission wavelength of 917 nm, a turn-on voltage of 1.65 V, and a radiance of 2.7 W Sr-1 m-2 when driven at 4.5 V. The emission spectra of mixed Pb-Sn perovskites are tuned either by changing the Pb:Sn ratio or by incorporating bromide, and notably exhibit no phase separation during device operation. The arrival of light-emitting diodes based on new materials is posing challenges for the characterization and comparison of devices in a trusted and consistent manner. Here we provide some advice and guidelines that we hope will benefit the community.

The solar spectral irradiance varies significantly for different locations and time due to latitude, humidity, cosine effect of incident sunlight, etc. For convenience, the power-conversion efficiency of a solar cell is referenced to the international standard of AM1.5G spectral irradiance, which inevitably leads to varying performance of deployed solar cells under the specific local climate and insolation conditions. To predict the actual performance of solar cells under local climate conditions, we propose a methodology to compute the power-conversion efficiency of organic photovoltaic cells based upon indoor measurement with a solar simulator, the measured local solar spectrum, and making use of both optical and electrical factors. From our study, the annual average energy density yield of poly(3-hexylthiophene):phenyl-C 61 -butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM) bulk-heterojunction organic solar cells under the local spectral irradiance of Malaysia is estimated to be 31.89 kW h/m 2 and the power-conversion efficiency is increased by 5.4% compared to that measured under AM1.5G conditions. In addition, diffuse solar irradiance (cloudy condition) was found to be in favor of P3HT:PCBM solar cells, with gain of 23.7–27.9% relative to AM1.5G conditions.
