During the past several decades physical vapor transport (PVT) method has been extensively used for developing laser and electronic and optical sensor materials especially for incongruent and high vapor materials. Extensive careful studies of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center on ZnSe growth by PVT has demonstrated that both thermal and solutal convection play very important roles on the quality of crystals and can be controlled by microgravity experiments. In case, the growth is performed by sputtering or systems such as DENTON, it is very difficult to control fluid flow and both thermal and solutal convective flows. We have demonstrated that by controlling the transport path, temperature of substrate and source and using purified source micron size thick ness can be achieved. We will present the experimental results of pure and doped lead selenide (PbSe) which demonstrated various morphologies and bandgap based on size of particles based on growth condition.

The effect of sulfur, iron, and chromium doping on the electrical characteristics of ZnSe single crystals was studied. The crystals, grown by the physical vapor transport method (PVT) at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, were characterized by measuring electrical resistivity, capacitance, and dielectric constant using LCR meter. The morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy to determine the crystallinity and micro defects. The measured resistivity and dielectric constant showed tunability as the function of frequency in the range of 100 Hz to 100,000 Hz, indicating the suitability of doped material for tuning devices. Besides, for the range from 50 mV to 1000mV, there was no difference in values for the studied frequency range, indicating no degradation or breakdown in the material. All doped ZnSe crystals with sulfur, iron, and chromium showed a similar trend as the function of frequency. Cr-ZnSe showed very high resistivity and lower dielectric constant compared to S-ZnSe and Fe-ZnSe crystals.

Background: Candida albicans, a common fungal pathogen that can cause opportunistic infections, is regarded as an apparently asexual, diploid fungus. A parasexual cycle was previously found between homozygotes with opposite mating type-like loci (MTLa/α). Fluconazole-resistant strains had a higher proportion of MTL homozygotes, whereas MTL homozygous C. albicans was found in only about 3.2% of clinical strains. MTL heterozygotes had a low frequency (1.4 Ã 10â4) of whiteâopaque switching to MTL homozygotes in nature. Methods: Here, a reference C. albicans strain (SC5314) was used in a fluconazole-induced assay to obtain standard opaque MTL homozygous strains and first-generation daughter strains from the fluconazole inhibition zone. Further separation methods were employed to produce second- and third-generation daughter strains. Polymerase chain reaction analysis based on MTL genes was used to define MTL genotypes, and microscopic observations, a flow-cytometric assay, and an antifungal E-test were used to compare microbiological characteristics. Results: MTL homozygotes were found at a high frequency (17 of 35; 48.6%) in fluconazole-induced first-generation daughter strains, as were morphological polymorphisms, decreased DNA content, and modified antifungal drug susceptibility. High-frequency MTL homozygosity was identified inside the fluconazole inhibition zone within 24 hours. The DNA content of fluconazole-induced daughter strains was reduced compared with their progenitor SC5314 and standard MTL homozygous strains. Conclusion: Treatment with fluconazole, commonly used to treat invasive candidiasis, inhibited the growth of C. albicans and altered its microbiological characteristics. Our results suggest that fluconazole treatment induces the high frequency of loss of heterozygosity and microbiological polymorphism in C. albicans. Although the thermoelectric performance of PbTe-based materials, processed by hot-pressing, has recently been improved, there are concerns about its thermal stability. On the other hand, during the process of melt crystal growth the material is formed in a quasi-equilibrium condition, which results in homogeneous solid structure in a lower-energy state and, consequently, more thermally stable and mechanically robust. To test the thermal stability of the melt-grown crystal, a Tl-doped PbTe 0.85 Se 0.15 ingot has been grown from the melt by directional solidification. Four adjacent disc-shape samples were sliced perpendicular to the growth axis from the grown boule. The thermoelectric characterizations together with microstructure examination and mechanical hardness measurements were performed on each of the three as-grown samples as well as on the fourth sample after it has been annealed at 455 °C for 570 h. The characterization results, showing that the annealing has essentially no effects on the thermoelectric properties, metallurgical microstructure as well as mechanical hardness of the annealed sample, have demonstrated that structurally homogeneous materials processed by melt growth are more suitable than those processed by other methods, such as hot press or quench-annealing, for long-term thermoelectric applications at elevated temperatures.

There are several mechanisms which have been proposed for the existence of colossal dielectric constant in the class of perovskite calcium copper titanate (CaCu3Ti4O12 or CCTO) materials. Researches indicate that existence of twinning parallel to (100) (001) and (010) planes causes planar defects and causes changes in local electronic structure. This change can cause insulating barriers locally which contribute to the large dielectric values irrespective of processing. The combination of insulating barriers, defects and displacements caused by twinning have been attributed to the generation of large dielectric constant in CCTO. To examine some of these arguments some researchers replaced Ca with other elements and evaluated this concept. In this study we present the synthesis and characterization of Ga2/3Cu3Ti4O12-xNx (GCTON) material. This provides both distortion due to atomic size difference and defects due to insertion of nitrogen. The morphology of the compound was determined to show that processing has tremendous effect on the dielectric values. The resistivity of GCTON was several order higher than CCTO and dielectric constant was higher than 10,000.

There is a strong need for rad hard and high operating temperature IR detectors for space environment. Heavy metal Selenides (high Z and large density) have been investigated for more than half century for high operating temperature mid wave infrared (MWIR) applications. Most of the efforts have been devoted to make detector arrays on high-resistivity Si substrates for operating wavelengths in the 1.5 to 5.0 μm region using physical vapor transport grown poly crystalline materials. For most of the biological spectral and imaging applications, short wave infrared (SWIR) detectors have shown better performance. Recent growth materials have shown variation in morphology with slight change in growth conditions and hence variation in performance parameters such as bandgap, mobility and resistivity from sample to sample. We have performed growth and optical characterization of binary materials CdSe-PbSe to determine the suitability for IR detector. We have determined bandgap using several theoretical models for different morphologies observed during growth on silicon wafers.

Recent studies on multinary oxides for applications as laser hosts and high dielectric capacitors have shown that processing at high temperature provides glassy or crystalline materials based on thermal treatments and cooling rates. Since hydroxyapatites are now subject of great interests due to their bioactivity, interest in producing soft and hard materials with glassy and crystalline nature by processing parameters has become very important. Crystalline materials by using Bridgman, Czochralski and flux growth methods are costly and require huge investment. We have observed that even low temperature solidification in organic flux produced oriented fibers. This organic treated material has different characteristics than in situ oxide materials prepared by sintering and grain growth. Examples of phosphate and silicate-based systems will be presented to demonstrate soft and hard materials. Effect of TiO2 and other hardening elements will be also reported.

The transition metal oxide embodied organic composites have great promise for high energy radiation detection. The interaction of high energy radiation such as γ-rays with the organic composite can generate photoelectric responses, Compton scattering and electron hole pairs, which can provide favorable properties to enhance the radiation detectivity of the composite. These effects along with changes of oxidation state of metal oxides, provide significant change in the electrical characteristics of composites due to radiation exposure. We have developed nickel oxide (NiO2) nanoparticles embodied urea composite (urea-NiO2), and determined effect of γ-radiation on the current – voltage characteristics in the frequency range of 100 Hz to 100,000Hz. In this paper, we describe the results of effect of additional oxidizing agent MnO2 (urea-NiO2-MnO2) on the morphology, processing and current voltage characteristics due to exposure of Cs-137 γ-radiation. It was observed that addition of MnO2 in urea-NiO2 composite decreases the sensitivity of detection. However, urea-NiO2-MnO2 composite recovers to original properties after irradiation much faster than urea-NiO2 composite.

Recently there is a big thrust on bio-inspired sensors and there has been a large rise in the investment and expectations for nanotechnology to meet these goals. For in situ sensor development materials deposition on substrate is essential part of device development. Physical vapor deposition (PVD), chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and molecular organic vapor deposition methods have developed for growth of semiconductor bulk and thin film growth with some modifications have been used for these materials. Oxides and other elements of the VI group such as sulfides and selenides are key components in the skins of many species. Growth of ordered structures containing these elements have been achieved by using PVD method. This paper describes effect of growth parameters during PVD growth on the quality of materials. Growth kinetics and mechanism will be discussed for the vertical and horizontal growth reactors. Since most of the efficient materials systems are multinary and in many cases non-congruent, PVD provides a pathway to grow materials below melting temperature.

Because of the bioactivities of hydroxyapatites with tissues, this class of materials have attracted interest for bone applications. We have utilized low temperature processing techniques. Organic melt was used and the directional solidification method to cast the shaped sample. This organic treated material has different characteristics than coarsened oxide materials. Our approach involved low temperature processing using nano and micron sized powders of the material system Na2OK2O-CaO- MgO-Ga2O3-SiO2, and titanates were processed by sintering and grain growth. Our results indicate that substitution of gallium and magnesium or titanium with some variation in processing methods have great potential to improve the glassy characteristics without decreasing the mechanical properties of bones. Effect of radiation on bone was studied by exposing with commercially available Cs137 gamma ray source. It was observed that electrical resistivity increased due to radiation exposure for this system.

Background Increasing evidence suggests that Helicobacter pylori infection (HPI) may have extragastric manifestations, including the respiratory system. This study investigated the role of HPI in increasing the subsequent risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in a nationwide population. Methods We conducted this retrospective cohort study using data from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database, which is derived from the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database. A total of 5941 adults who were newly diagnosed with HPI between 2005 and 2006 were selected. Healthy patients without HPI were selected from the general population and frequency matched as a ratio of 4:1, according to age, sex, and index years. Both cohorts were followed up from the index date to the end of 2011 to measure the incidence of COPD. Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was used to assess the hazard ratio (HR) of COPD between the HPI cohort and non-HPI cohorts. Results The overall HR of COPD was 1.84 (95% confidence intervals = 1.57–2.17) for the HPI cohort, compared with the non-HPI cohort, after adjusting for age, sex, and comorbidities. Although the incidence of COPD was substantially higher in the elderly participants (age, ≥ 65 years) than that in younger participants, the highest HR (4.05, 95% confidence intervals = 1.39–11.8) of COPD was observed in the youngest (age, 20–49 years) participants. Conclusion In this study, the patients with HPI exhibited a significantly higher risk of COPD than those without HPI did.

Objective: We investigated and compared the risk of dementia development in a cohort of patients with tuberculosis (TB). Methods: The study involved 6473 patient with newly diagnosed TB, and each patient was randomly frequency matched with 4 people without TB based on age, sex, and index year. The risk of dementia development was analyzed using Cox proportional hazards regression. Results: Among the patients with TB, the overall risk of developing dementia was 1.21-fold significantly higher than the non-TB cohort. In the stratified analysis of dementia risks, only the patients with TB who were male or 50 to 64 years of age exhibited a significantly higher risk of dementia development compared with those without TB. An analysis of the follow-up duration revealed that patients with TB had a 1.78-fold increased risk within 1 year of follow-up. Conclusion: Patients with TB have a significantly higher risk of developing dementia than that of the general population.

Although recent treatments such as sorafenib are promising in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the response rates remain poor thereby warranting the identification of novel therapeutic agents against liver cancer. Herein, we investigated the anti-cancer effect of ergosterol (a secondary metabolite in medicinal fungus) pretreatment followed by amphotericin B (AmB) treatment on liver cancer cell lines. We demonstrated that pretreatment with a nontoxic dose of ergosterol synergistically enhanced the cytotoxicity of AmB in both Hep3B and HepJ5 cells. The combination treatment-mediated suppression of cancer cell viability occurred through necrosis characterized by disrupted cell membrane and significant amounts of debris accumulation. In addition, we also observed a concomitant increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) and LC3-II levels in HepJ5 cells treated with ergosterol and AmB. Our results suggest that ergosterol-AmB combination treatment effectively induced necrotic cell death in cancer cells, and deserves further evaluation for development as an anti-cancer agent.

Recently, the structure–function relationships between amphotericin B (AmB) and ergosterol have been solved using synthetic techniques that require a mycosamine-mediated direct binding interaction between AmB and ergosterol to form AmB ion channels. However, studies to directly probe the AmB-induced membrane permeability changes have not been conducted. In the present work, we investigate the following fundamental question: does AmB induce concentration- and time-dependent permeability changes across ergosterol-containing membranes? Herein, we employ fluorescent dyes of known average diameter to quantify the diameters of AmB ion channels. In addition, we take a single-particle tracking approach to define the intracellular microrheology in the absence and presence of AmB ion channels. Present results show that increasing AmB concentration tends to increase the preferential accumulation of AmB ion channels in the presence of the excess membrane-embedded ergosterol. We found that AmB induces time-dependent membrane permeability; increases approaching 50% in both the velocity fluctuations and diffusion coefficients of vesicles occur on the same time scale as the efflux of potassium ions (≅30min). Furthermore, we propose a two-dimensional, semi-regular tessellation model to geometrically assess the pore size of the AmB ion channels in response to the AmB dose. This approach offers one possibility for the design of AmB ion channels with tunable aqueous pore size, which could provide an opportunity to replace damaged membrane water channels of the aquaporin family in future applications.

Candida albicans, the most prevalent human fungal pathogen, is considered to be an obligate diploid that carries recessive lethal mutations throughout the genome. Here we demonstrate that C. albicans has a viable haploid state that can be derived from diploid cells under in vitro and in vivo conditions, and that seems to arise through a concerted chromosome loss mechanism. Haploids undergo morphogenetic changes like those of diploids, including the yeast-hyphal transition, chlamydospore formation and a white-opaque switch that facilitates mating. Haploid opaque cells of opposite mating type mate efficiently to regenerate the diploid form, restoring heterozygosity and fitness. Homozygous diploids arise spontaneously by auto-diploidization, and both haploids and auto-diploids show a similar reduction in fitness, in vitro and in vivo, relative to heterozygous diploids, indicating that homozygous cell types are transient in mixed populations. Finally, we constructed stable haploid strains with multiple auxotrophies that will facilitate molecular and genetic analyses of this important pathogen.

Niu-chang-chih, a medicinal polypore restricted to Taiwan on the endemic tree species Cinnamomum kanehirae, currently goes by the names Antrodia cinnamomea T.T. Chang &W.N. Chou, A. camphorata (M. Zang & C.H. Su) Sheng H. Wu & al., and Taiwanofungus camphoratus (M. Zang & C.H. Su) Sheng H. Wu & al., the latter two based on Ganoderma camphoratum M. Zang & C.H. Su. The basidiocarps on the holotypes for the two basionyms Antrodia cinnamomea and Ganoderma camphoratum are of niu-chang-chih. The first validly published name that was applied to this species was G. camphoratum M. Zang & C.H. Su published in 1990. However, the original type of G. camphoratum consisted of mixed material, consisting chiefly of a basidiocarp of niu-chang-chih but also of the spores of another unrelated fungus. The two elements are represented in the original description and accompanying illustrations. Later Chang & Chou (2004) lectotypifed G. camphoratum limiting it to the spores described and illustrated by Zang and Su, the only portion of the original type that Chang and Chou believed to belong in Ganoderma, and applied the name Antrodia cinnamomea Chang & Chou (1995) to niu-chang-chih. Many, however, reject Chang and Chou's conclusions and continue to apply the name Ganoderma camphoratum, and combinations based on it (i.e., Antrodia camphoratum,Taiwanofungus camphoratus), to niu-chang-chih, relegating Antrodia cinnamomea to synonymy. Based on careful examination of the type of G. camphoratum, it is concluded that the spores upon which Chang and Chou's lectotype is based are a minor admixture with the original gathering of the niu-chang-chih specimen and thus cannot serve as the lectotype for the name Ganoderma camphoratum. Ganoderma camphoratum is lectotypified here so as to exclude the spores present in the original holotype that are not from niu-chang-chih. Furthermore, since this conclusion could be subject to challenge and the species is exceptionally important medicinally and economically, we also propose to conserve the name with a conserved type that is consistent with the lectotype effected herein. An overview of the taxonomy of niu-chang-chih is also provided and a new combination, Taiwanofungus salmoneus, for a related species is effected.

Semiconductor nanowires exhibit very exciting optical and electrical properties including high transparency and a several order of magnitude better photocurrent than thin film and bulk materials. We present here the mechanism of nanowire growth from the melt-liquid-vapor medium. We describe preliminary results of binary and ternary selenide materials in light of recent theories. Experiments were performed with lead selenide and thallium arsenic selenide systems which are multifunctional material and have been used for detectors, acousto-optical, nonlinear and radiation detection applications. We observed that small units of nanocubes and elongated nanoparticles arrange and rearrange at moderate melt undercooling to form the building block of a nanowire. Since we avoided the catalyst, we observed self-nucleation and uncontrolled growth of wires from different places. Growth of lead selenide nanowires was performed by physical vapor transport method and thallium arsenic selenide nanowire by vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) method. In some cases very long wires (>mm) are formed. To achieve this goal experiments were performed to create situation where nanowires grew on the surface of solid thallium arsenic selenide itself.

Increasing threats of radiological weapons have revitalized the researches for low cost large volume γ-ray and neutron ray sensors In the past few years we have designed and grown ternary and quaternary lead and thallium chalcogenides and lead selenoiodides for detectors to meet these challenges. These materials are congruent, can be tailored to enhance the parameters required for radiation sensors. In addition, this class of compounds can be grown by Bridgman method which promises for large volume productions. We have single crystals of several compounds from the melt including Tl 3 AsSe 3 , Tl 3 AsSe 3-x S x , TlGaSe 2 , AgGaGe 3 Se 8 , Ag x Li 1-x AgGaGe 3 Se 8 and PbTlI 5-x Se x compounds. Experimental studies indicate that these have very low absorption coefficient, low defect density and can be fabricated in any shape and sizes. These crystals do not require post growth annealing and do not show any second phase precipitates when processed for electrode bonding and other fabrication steps. In this paper we report purification, growth and fabrication of large Tl 3 AsSe 3 (TAS) crystals. We observed that TAS crystals grown by using further purification of as supplied high purity source materials followed by directionally solidified charge showed higher resistivity than previously reported values. TAS also showed constant value as the function of voltage.

In this study, a nanogel formed from micronized sacchachitin (mSC) was investigated for the potential treatment of superficial chemical corneal burns. Reportedly, mSC has been produced successfully and its chemical properties confirmed, and physical and rheological properties characterized. An in vitro cell proliferation study has revealed that at the concentrations of 200, 300, and 400 µg/mL, mSC nanogel significantly increased Statens Seruminstitut rabbit corneal (SIRC) cell proliferation after 24 hours of incubation. In cell migration assay, migration of SIRC cell to wound closure was observed after 24 hours of incubation with the addition of 200 µg/mL mSC of nanogel. In an animal study, acceleration of corneal wound healing was probably due to the inhibition of proteolysis. In conclusion, the findings of this study substantiate the potential application of sacchachitin in the form of mSC nanogel for the treatment of superficial corneal injuries.Keywords: corneal wound healing, sacchachitin, matrix metalloproteinase

Aims: To search for antimicrobial compounds against pathogenic bacteria from grape vines (Vitis spp.). To investigate the antimicrobial efficacy of active compounds towards methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Methods and Results: The root extracts of taiwanese wild grape (Vitis thunbergii var. taiwaniana) showed marked activities against Gram-positive bacteria using the disc diffusion method. After purification, the active compound 1 was confirmed as heyneanol A by mass spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. Heyneanol A showed an minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of 2 μg ml−1 towards MRSA and a value of 2 to 4 μg ml−1 for Enterococcus faecium, S. aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae and Streptococcus pyogenes. In addition, the contents of heyneanol A were determined as 36 mg g−1 in roots of taiwanese wild grape. Conclusions: The root extracts of grapevines have good antimicrobial activities towards some strains of Gram-positive pathogens. Heyneanol A, the major antimicrobial compound, is especially active towards MRSA. In addition, the abundances of heyneanol A and other stilbenes in the roots of grapevines make it possible to produce natural antimicrobial compounds from this plant species. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study reports for the first time the antimicrobial compounds in the root extracts of grapevines. The results will have clinical significance owing to their activities against MRSA.

Taiwanofungus camphoratus (T. camphoratus), a fungus and a Taiwan-specific, well-known traditional Chinese medicine, has long been used to treat diarrhea, hypertension, itchy skin, and liver cancer. To gain a large amount of T. camphoratus, several culture techniques have been developed, including solid-state culture and liquid-state fermentation. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) has been described as a hypoglycemic agent that increases insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues and results in reduced blood glucose, insulin, and triglyceride levels in insulin-resistant animals and in type-2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetic patients. In this study, we investigate the possibility that T. camphoratus might activate PPARgamma in vitro and hypolipidemic activity in vivo. The results show that an aqueous extract of the wild fruiting bodies of T. camphoratus was able to increase the PPARgamma activity in cells transfected with the PPARgamma expression plasmid and the AOx-TK reporter plasmid. Based on the cell experiment, we examined the hypolipidemic effect of wild fruiting bodies (WFT) and a solid-state culture (SST) of T. camphoratus on SD rats fed on a high-cholesterol (HC) diet. The results show that WFT significantly decreased the serum triglyceride level, but could not affect the cholesterol level. SST only slightly decreased the serum triglyceride level. In addition, both WFT and SST significantly decreased the serum alanine transaminase (ALT) level and protected against the liver damage induced by the HC diet from the results of a histological examination. These results suggest that T. camphoratus might contain PPARgamma ligands and result in a hypotriglyceridemic effect, and that it also exhibits a liver protective activity.

Dermatophytes and Malassezia are common pathogen in Taiwan. However, systemic Candida albicans (C. albicans) infection in animals has not yet been reported here and is rare elsewhere in the world. This report, describe a young dog, in which a submandibular pyogranulomatous lymphadenitis caused by C. albicans infection progressed to systemic candidiasis. The diagnosis was based on the fungal culture of aspirates from the submandibular lymph node and exudates around the lymph node. The dog did not respond to oral fluconazole therapy and required euthanasia because the dog appeared serious sign of seizure. At necropsy, multiple lymph nodes were also shown to be affected, and the fungal culture of cerebrospinal fluid was positive for C. albicans. In this first documented case of systemic C. albicans infection in a dog from Taiwan, we assess the possibility of candidiasis as a re-emerging infection in companion animals.

Wild and solid-state cultures (SSC) of Taiwanofungus camphoratus (aka Antrodia camphorata and Chang-chih [CC]) were sequentially extracted with cold water, methanol, and hot water to get cold-water-soluble (CWS), methanol-soluble (MS), and hot-water-soluble (HWS) extracts, respectively. Only the MS extract exhibited angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activities. The antihypertensive effects of the MS extract (10 mg/kg BW) were measured in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats. MS extract of the SSC type was able to effectively lower the systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of SHR, but not of WKY rats, the results being significantly different from those for distilled water only (the blank). However, wild CC and its MS extract were not as effective as the SSC type in reducing SHR blood pressure and had no effect on WKY rats. SSC-type CC might be developed into a health food with the ability to regulate blood pressure.

Increasing evidence suggests that Helicobacter pylori infection (HPI) may have extragastric manifestations, including the respiratory system. This study investigated the role of HPI in increasing the subsequent risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in a nationwide population.We conducted this retrospective cohort study using data from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database, which is derived from the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database. A total of 5941 adults who were newly diagnosed with HPI between 2005 and 2006 were selected. Healthy patients without HPI were selected from the general population and frequency matched as a ratio of 4:1, according to age, sex, and index years. Both cohorts were followed up from the index date to the end of 2011 to measure the incidence of COPD. Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was used to assess the hazard ratio (HR) of COPD between the HPI cohort and non-HPI cohorts.The overall HR of COPD was 1.84 (95% confidence intervals = 1.57-2.17) for the HPI cohort, compared with the non-HPI cohort, after adjusting for age, sex, and comorbidities. Although the incidence of COPD was substantially higher in the elderly participants (age, ≥ 65 years) than that in younger participants, the highest HR (4.05, 95% confidence intervals = 1.39-11.8) of COPD was observed in the youngest (age, 20-49 years) participants.In this study, the patients with HPI exhibited a significantly higher risk of COPD than those without HPI did.

A mycelial mattress of Rhizopus stolonifer obtained from a liquid static culture was utilized for wound dressing and biomedical use. Following screening of mutants induced by UV radiation, F6, exhibiting delayed sporangium formation was selected because its sporangium maturation exhibited a 5-day delay without significant loss of mycelial weight compared to the wild type. The sporangium-free mycelial mattress from the sporangiospore culture of F6 was treated with 1N sodium hydroxide NaOH at 85°C for 2 h to produce a sponge-like membrane named Rhizochitin. The trifluoroacetic acid hydrolysate of Rhizochitin contained 36% N-acetylglucosamine and 53% hexose respectively detected by the Elson-Morgen and phenol-sulfuric acid methods. Results indicated the wound area in rats covered with Rhizochitin was 40% less than that of the uncovered group. Rhizochitin decreased the expression of PDGF in the proliferation stage, increased the expression of TGF-β in the inflammation and proliferation stages, and increased the expression of VEGF in the inflammation and proliferation stages. Rhizochitin inhibited secretion of matrix metalloproteinase-9 on days 1, 7, 9, and 12 and matrix metalloproteinase-2 on days 3, 7, 9, and 12. It was concluded that Rhizochitin has beneficial properties of biocompatible, biodegradable, and wound healing.

Taiwanofungus camphoratus(synonymAntrodia camphorata) is a widely used medicinal fungus in the folk medicine of Taiwan with several pharmacological features such as anti-inflammatory, liver protection, antihypertensive, and antioxidative activities. The ethanolic extract ofT. camphoratus(TCEE) which contains abundant bioactive compounds including triterpenoids and polysaccharides also has antitumor effects in various human cancer cell lines. The aims of this study are to clarify the antitumor effects of TCEE on human hepatocellular carcinoma cells and also evaluate the combination drug effects with conventional chemotherapy agents, cisplatin and doxorubicin. In the present study, the TCEE treatment induced cell cycle arrest and suppressed cell growth on both Hep3B and HepJ5 cells. Expression of cell cycle inhibitors, P21 and P27, and activation of apoptosis executer enzyme, caspase-3, were also induced by TCEE. In combination with the chemotherapy agents, TCEE treatment further enhanced the tumor suppression efficiency of cisplatin and doxorubicin. These results together suggested that TCEE is a potential ingredient for developing an integrated chemotherapy for human liver cancer.

Carbon nanotubes (CNT) were synthesized on graphite fibers by thermal CVD. On the fiber surface, iron nanoparticles are coated and act as catalysts for CNT growth. The growth temperature ranges from 550 to 1000 °C at an ambient pressure. Methane and hydrogen gases with methane contents of 10–100% are used for the CNT synthesis. At high growth temperatures (>800 °C), the rapid inter-diffusion of the transition metal iron on the graphite surface results in a rough fiber surface with no CNT grown on the surface. When the growth temperature is relatively low (650–800 °C), CNT are fabricated on the graphite surface with catalytic particles on the nanotube top ends. Using micro Raman spectroscopy in the breath mode region, single-walled or multi-walled CNT can be determined, depending on methane concentrations.

The optical absorbance of the vapor phase over various In-Se compositions between 33.3–60.99 at.% Se and 673–1418 K was measured and used to obtain the partial pressures of Se2(g) and In2Se(g). The results are in agreement with silica Bourdon gauge measurements for compositions between 50–61 at.%, but significantly higher than those from Knudsen cell and simultaneous Knudsen-torsion cell measurements. It is found that 60.99 at.% Se lies outside the sesquiselenide homogeneity range and 59.98 at.% Se lies inside and is the congruently melting composition. The Gibbs energy of formation of the liquid from its pure liquid elements between 1000–1300 K is essentially independent of temperature and falls between −36 to −38 kJ per g atomic weight for 50 and 56% Se at 1200 and 1300 K.

LUFFACHITINobtained from the residue of the sponge-like dried fruit ofLuffa aegyptiacawas developed as a weavable skin substitute in this study. A chemical analysis revealed thatLUFFACHITINwas composed of a copolymer containing N-acetyl-glucosamine (~40%) as a major monomer with a filamentary structure as demonstrated by both optical and scanning electron microscopy. The pulp-like white residue of the sponge-like dried fruit ofLuffa aegyptiacaafter treatment was then woven into a thin, porous membrane by filtration and lyophilization as a skin substitute for conducting wound-healing study on rats. The results indicated that theLUFFACHITINmembrane showed significant wound-healing enhancement (25 days to complete healing) compared to cotton gauze (>30 days), but not inferior to that ofSACCHACHITIN. Furthermore, theLUFFACHITINmembrane had advantages of having a high yield, better physical properties for fabrication, and a more attractive appearance.

Carbon nanoparticles and nanotubes have been synthesized on Si substrates using pulsed laser vaporization. Two kinds of targets were used to grow the nanostructural materials. One was a pure carbon target and the other was carbon target containing Ni and Co catalysts. The growth temperatures were 600–1000°C and the argon pressure was 500 torr. Samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. Materials containing carbon nanocrystal particles could be observed using a pure carbon target when a thin Ni film was deposited on (100) Si substrates prior to growing carbon materials. The carbon nanotubes (CNT) were obtained in carbon soot when the target contained catalysts. By comparing the Raman radial breathing modes of the CNT grown at various temperatures, it was found that the density of the CNT was lower and the strongest Raman peak was slightly blue-shifted in samples grown at lower temperatures.

ZnSe crystals were grown by self-seeded physical vapor transport (PVT) technique in the horizontal configuration. The source materials were heat treated by H2 reduction to remove the oxide followed by baking under dynamic vacuum to adjust the source composition toward that of congruent sublimation. Contactless growth of ZnSe single crystals have been performed consistently using three different source materials. The crystals grew away from the wall during the later stage of the growth with large (110) facets tend to align parallel to the gravity direction. The Scanning Electron Micrography (SEM) micrographs and the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) images showed that large (110) terraces and steps dominate the as-grown facets. The measured residual gas pressures in the processed ampoules agree well among various source materials and the major components were CO and H2. No preferred growth direction was found. The one-dimensional diffusion model on the mass flux of a multi-species PVT system was employed to analyze the conditions for contactless growth. The calculated thermal profile for supersaturation is very close to the thermal profile measured inside the empty furnace bore in the region of contactless growth. The effects of convective flows in the vapor phase inside the ampoule on the growth processes are discussed.

In this study, Sacchachitin membrane, prepared from the residue of the fruiting body of Ganoderma tsugae, was estimated for its effects on wound healing and the proliferation and migration of fibroblast cells. Two mirror-image wounds were made on the back of female guinea pigs by dissecting a 1.5×1.5 cm2 skin surface of full thickness. Sacchachitin membrane was placed randomly on one of the wounds and gauze or Beschitin® on the other. Changes in the wound area were measured and photographed after a predetermined amount of time postoperatively. Histological examination of the wound and surrounding tissue was also performed to reveal any interaction of tissue with the dressing. The results showed that the wound area covered with Sacchachitin membrane was statistically smaller than that covering with gauze on day 10, whereas there was no significant difference in the wound size compared to that with Beschitin®. Fibroblast cells from the dermis layer of guinea pigs were used. The number of fibroblast cells were counted on the predetermined days in the culture suspended with or without 0.01% w/v dressing materials. By layering on DMEM plates, the number of fibroblast cells migrating across the center line or outside of the central hole were counted after five days. All the results indicated that both 0.01% w/v of Sacchachitin and chitin significantly enhanced the proliferation and migration of fibroblast cells.

The effect of different heat treatments on stoichiometry and residual gas pressure in ZnSe physical vapor transport system was investigated. The dependence of the amount and composition of the residual gas on various heat treatment procedures is reported. Heat treatment of ZnSe starting materials by baking under the condition of dynamic vacuum to adjust its stoichiometry was performed and the effectiveness of the treatment was confirmed by the measurements of the partial pressure of Se2, P(sub Se2), in equilibrium with the heat treated samples. Optimum heat treatment procedures on the ZnSe starting material for the physical vapor transport process are discussed and verified experimentally.

Six batches of CdTe, having total amounts of material from 99 to 203 g and gross mole fraction of Te, X(sub Te), 0.499954-0.500138, were synthesized from pure Cd and Te elements. The vapor-phase stoichiometry of the assynthesized CdTe batches was determined from the partial pressure of Te2, P(sub Te2) using an optical absorption technique. The measured vapor compositions at 870 C were Te-rich for all of the batches with partial pressure ratios of Cd to Te2, P(sub Cd)/P(sub Te2), ranging from 0.00742 to 1.92. After the heat treatment of baking under dynamic vacuum at 870 C for 8 min, the vapor-phase compositions moved toward that of the congruent sublimation, i.e. P(sub Cd)/P(sub Te2) = 2.0, with the measured P(sub Cd)/P(sub Te2) varying from 1.84 to 3.47. The partial pressure measurements on one of the heat-treated samples also showed that the sample remained close to the congruent sublimation condition over the temperature range 800-880 C.

Abstract Triflavin, a 7.5-kD cysteine-rich polypeptide purified from Trimeresurus favoviridis snake venom, belongs to a family of Arg-Gly-Asp-(RGD)–containing peptides, termed disintegrins. In this study, aggregating human platelets dose- dependently induced vasoconstriction in de-endothelialized isolated rat thoracic aortas. At 5×10 7 cells per milliliter, platelets induced a peak tension averaging 65±7.2% of the tension induced by phenylephrine (10 μmol/L). The relative effectiveness of RGD-containing peptides (including venom peptides triflavin and trigramin, small RGD synthetic peptides Gly-Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser [GRGDS], Gly-Arg-Gly-Asp-Phe [GRGDF], and Gly-Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser-Pro-Lys [GRGDSPK]) was examined by testing the inhibitory effect on aggregating platelet-induced vasoconstriction in de-endothelialized aorta. Triflavin (1 μmol/L) significantly inhibited the platelet-induced vasoconstriction, whereas neither trigramin (10 μmol/L) nor small RGD peptides (2 mmol/L) (ie, GRGDS, GRGDF, and GRGDSPK) showed any significant effect. The release of serotonin and the formation of thromboxane A 2 from aggregating platelets were both significantly inhibited by triflavin (2 μmol/L), whereas trigramin and small RGD-containing peptides showed no significant effect. On scanning electron micrographs of de-endothelialized aorta, aggregating platelets adhered to the subendothelium, with loss of their discoid shape, to form irregular spheres with pseudopod extensions. Triflavin (2 μmol/L) markedly reduced the adhesion of platelets to the subendothelium in the same aorta. Furthermore, RGD-containing peptides (including triflavin, trigramin, and small RGD-containing peptides) inhibited the adhesion of 10 μg/mL collagen-activated platelets to extracellular matrices (ie, fibronectin, vitronectin, and von Willebrand factor). It is concluded that the marked ability of triflavin to inhibit aggregating platelet-induced vasoconstriction in de-endothelialized aorta compared with other RGD-containing peptides (including trigramin), may be due at least partly to triflavin’s efficiently preventing the activation of platelets subsequent to inhibition of serotonin release and thromboxane A 2 formation. However, the different abilities of triflavin compared with other RGD-containing peptides was not related to the ability to inhibit adhesion of platelets to extracellular matrices. Therefore, from the results of this study, it appears that triflavin may be a useful therapeutic agent for the treatment of thromboembolism and its associated angiospasm.

A wovenable skin substitute (Sacchachitin) made from the residue of the fruiting body of Ganoderma tsugae was developed in this study. Chemical analysis revealed that the treated residue was a copolymer of β-1,3-glucan (ca 60%) and N-acetylglucosamine (ca 40%) with a filamental structure of mycelia form, as demonstrated by both optical and scanning electron microscopy. The pulp-like white residue was then woven into thin, porous sheets 7.0cm in diameter and 0.1–0.2mm in thickness by filtration and lyophilized for use as a skin substitute. The wound area produced by dissecting rat skin of full thickness was found to almost completely heal on the side covered with Sacchachitin, whereas the control side covered with cotton gauge was around 6.0cm2 on the 28th day. Furthermore, the wound healing effects of the chitin sheet from crab shell (Beschitin®) and Sacchachitin were not found to be significantly different.

A series of Hg0.84Zn0.16 Te crystal ingots have been grown from pseudobinary melts by the Bridgmam–Stockbarger type directional solidification using a Marshall Space Flight Center/Space Science Laboratory heat-pipe furnace and the ground control experiment laboratory furnace of the crystal growth furnace which was flown on the first United States Microgravity Mission. A number of translation rates and a series of hot- and cold-zone temperatures were employed to assess the influence of growth parameters on the crystal properties for the purpose of optimizing the in-flight growth conditions.
