INFN has been running a distributed infrastructure (the Tier-1 at Bologna-CNAF and 9 Tier-2 centres) for more than 20 years which currently offers about 150000 CPU cores and 120 PB of space both in tape and disk storage, serving more than 40 international scientific collaborations. This Grid-based infrastructure was augmented in 2019 with the INFN Cloud: a production quality multi-site federated Cloud infrastructure, composed by a core backbone, and which is able to integrate other INFN sites and public or private Clouds as well. The INFN Cloud provides a customizable and extensible portfolio offering computing and storage services spanning the IaaS, PaaS and SaaS layers, with dedicated solutions to serve special purposes, such as ISO-certified regions for the handling of sensitive data. INFN is now revising and expanding its infrastructure to tackle the challenges expected in the next 10 years of scientific computing adopting a “cloud-first” approach, through which all the INFN data centres will be federated via the INFN Cloud middleware and integrated with key HPC centres, such as the pre-exascale Leonardo machine at CINECA. In such a process, which involves both the infrastructures and the higher level services, initiatives and projects such as the "Italian National Centre on HPC, Big Data and Quantum Computing" (funded in the context of the Italian "National Recovery and Resilience Plan") and the Bologna Technopole are precious opportunities that will be exploited to offer advanced resources and services to universities, research institutions and industry. In this paper we describe how INFN is evolving its computing infrastructure, with the ambition to create and operate a national vendorneutral, open, scalable, and flexible "datalake" able to serve much more than just INFN users and experiments.

Anomaly detection in data center IT and physical infrastructure is challenging due to the amount of heterogeneous data to be analyzed. Defining a solution that early identifies unexpected anomalies is particularly important to prevent data losses, breakdown of the system, and any other event considered to be critical for the activity of the data center. In the context of the INFN CNAF data center, one of the WLCG Tier-1s, we have performed a study based on monitored cooling, electrical, and IT hardware and software metrics to identify anomalies. In the present work, we aim to explore statistical approaches and machine learning solutions in the anomaly detection field for time series numerical metrics related to IT and physical infrastructure sensors. With the usage of statistical Z-score and percentile approaches and clustering DBSCAN technique, we have been able to group and identify anomalous events. Using the presented approach, different relevance can be attributed to the likely anomalies.

Machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques are increasingly influential in High Energy Physics, necessitating effective computing infrastructures and training opportunities for users and developers, particularly concerning programmable hardware like FPGAs. A gap exists in accessible ML/DL on FPGA tutorials catering to diverse hardware specifications. To bridge this gap, collaborative efforts by INFN-Bologna, the University of Bologna, and INFN-CNAF produced a pilot course using virtual machines, inhouse cloud platforms, and AWS instances, utilizing Docker containers for interactive exercises. Additionally, the Bond Machine software ecosystem, capable of generating FPGA-synthesizable computer architectures, is explored as a simplified approach for teaching FPGA programming.

The INFN Tier1 data center is currently located in the premises of the Physics Department of the University of Bologna, where CNAF is also located. During 2023 it will be moved to the “Tecnopolo”, the new facility for research, innovation, and technological development in the same city area; the same location is also hosting Leonardo, the pre-exascale supercomputing machine managed by CINECA, co-financed as part of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, 4th ranked in the top500 November 2022 list. The construction of the new CNAF data center consists of two phases, corresponding to the computing requirements of LHC: Phase 1 involves an IT power of 3 MW, and Phase 2, starting from 2025, involves an IT power up to 10 MW. The new data center is designed to cope with the computing requirements of the data taking of the HL-LHC experiments, in the time spanning from 2026 to 2040 and will provide, at the same time, computing services for several other INFN experiments and projects, not only belonging to the HEP domain. The co-location with Leonardo opens wider possibilities to integrate HTC and HPC resources and the new CNAF data center will be tightly coupled with it, allowing access from a single entry point to resources located at CNAF and provided by the supercomputer. Data access from both infrastructures will be transparent to users. In this presentation we describe the new data center design, providing a status update on the migration, and we focus on the Leonardo integration showing the results of the preliminary tests to access it from the CNAF access points.

INFN-CNAF is one of the Worldwide Large Hadron Collider Computing Grid (WLCG) Tier-1 data centers, providing support in terms of computing, networking, storage resources and services also to a wide variety of scientific collaborations, ranging from physics to bioinformatics and industrial engineering [1]. Recently, several collaborations working with our data center have developed computing and data management workflows that require access to S3 storage services and/or the integration with POSIX capabilities. Nevertheless, the access to the data must be regulated by federated authentication and authorization mechanisms, such as OpenID Connect (OIDC), which is largely adopted by communities like WLCG [2] and within the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) [3]. In the present work, the possibility to regulate POSIX access by integrating JSON Web Token (JWT) [4] authentication, provided by INDIGO-IAM as Identity Provider [5], with solutions based on S3 (for object storage) and WebDAV (for hierarchical storage) protocols has been evaluated an related results have been reported. In such respect, a comparison between the performance yielded by S3 and WebDAV protocols has been carried out within the same distributed environment with the aim to better identify the solution most suitable for the different use cases.

Having a long tradition in state-of-the-art distributed IT technologies, in the last couple of years INFN made available to its users “INFN Cloud”: a cloud infrastructure and related services portfolio dedicated to the scientific communities supported by INFN. Given the distributed nature of the infrastructure as well as the considerable number of technical solutions provided to the INFN users, it is important to have a reliable user support service aimed to properly interact both with INFN Cloud users and administrators. As an added value, proper training activities have been defined and differentiated to different types of users and the training courses are integrated with a rich set of user guides and technical documentation. In this article, an overview of the INFN Cloud, its evolution to DataCloud project, and the support and training activities will be provided and presented.

The eXtreme DataCloud (XDC) project is aimed at developing data management services capable to cope with very large data resources allowing the future e-infrastructures to address the needs of the next generation extreme scale scientific experiments. Started in November 2017, XDC is combining the expertise of 8 large European research organisations. The project aims at developing scalable technologies for federating storage resources and managing data in highly distributed computing environments. The project is use case driven with a multidisciplinary approach, addressing requirements from research communities belonging to a wide range of scientific domains: Life Science, Biodiversity, Clinical Research, Astrophysics, High Energy Physics and Photon Science, that represent an indicator in terms of data management needs in Europe and worldwide. The use cases proposed by the different user communities are addressed integrating different data management services ready to manage an increasing volume of data. Different scalability and performance tests have been defined to show that the XDC services can be harmonized in different contexts and complex frameworks like the European Open Science Cloud. The use cases have been used to measure the success of the project and to prove that the developments fulfil the defined needs and satisfy the final users. The present contribution describes the results carried out from the adoption of the XDC solutions and provides a complete overview of the project achievements.

The development of data management services capable to cope with very large data resources is a key challenge to allow the future einfrastructures to address the needs of the next generation extreme scale scientific experiments. To face this challenge, in November 2017 the H2020 eXtreme DataCloud - XDC project has been launched. Lasting for 27 months and combining the expertise of eight large European research organisations, the project aims at developing scalable technologies for federating storage resources and managing data in highly distributed computing environments. The targeted platforms are the current and next generation e-Infrastructures deployed in Europe, such as the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), the European Grid Infrastructure (EGI), and the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG). The project is use-case driven with a multidisciplinary approach, addressing requirements from research communities belonging to a wide range of scientific domains: High Energy Physics, Astronomy, Photon and Life Science, Medical research. XDC is aimed at implementing data management scalable services, combining already established data management and orchestration tools, to address the following high level topics: policy driven data management based on Quality-of-Service, Data Life-cycle management, smart placement of data with caching mechanisms to reduce access latency, meta-data with no predefined schema handling, execution of pre-processing applications during ingestion, data management and protection of sensitive data in distributed e-infrastructures, intelligent data placement based on access patterns. This contribution introduces the project, presents the foreseen overall architecture and the developments that are being carried on to implement the requested functionalities.
