Abstract

Generative modelling and synthetic data can be a surrogate for real medical imaging datasets, whose scarcity and difficulty to share can be a nuisance when delivering accurate deep learning models for healthcare applications. In recent years, there has been an increased interest in using these models for data augmentation and synthetic data sharing, using architectures such as generative adversarial networks (GANs) or diffusion models (DMs). Nonetheless, the application of synthetic data to tasks such as 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) segmentation remains limited due to the lack of labels associated with the generated images. Moreover, many of the proposed generative MRI models lack the ability to generate arbitrary modalities due to the absence of explicit contrast conditioning. These limitations prevent the user from adjusting the contrast and content of the images and obtaining more generalisable data for training task-specific models. In this work, we propose brainSPADE3D, a 3D generative model for brain MRI and associated segmentations, where the user can condition on specific pathological phenotypes and contrasts. The proposed joint imaging-segmentation generative model is shown to generate high-fidelity synthetic images and associated segmentations, with the ability to combine pathologies. Abstract

Recent advances in generative AI have brought incredible breakthroughs in several areas, including medical imaging. These generative models have tremendous potential not only to help safely share medical data via synthetic datasets but also to perform an array of diverse applications, such as anomaly detection, image-to-image translation, denoising, and MRI reconstruction. However, due to the complexity of these models, their implementation and reproducibility can be difficult. This complexity can hinder progress, act as a use barrier, and dissuade the comparison of new methods with existing works. In this study, we present MONAI Generative Models, a freely available open-source platform that allows researchers and developers to easily train, evaluate, and deploy generative models and related applications. Our platform reproduces state-of-art studies in a standardised way involving different architectures (such as diffusion models, autoregressive transformers, and GANs), and provides pre-trained models for the community. We have implemented these models in a generalisable fashion, illustrating that their results can be extended to 2D or 3D scenarios, including medical images with different modalities (like CT, MRI, and X-Ray data) and from different anatomical areas. Finally, we adopt a modular and extensible approach, ensuring long-term maintainability and the extension of current applications for future features.

Abstract

Knowledge distillation in neural networks refers to compressing a large model or dataset into a smaller version of itself. We introduce Privacy Distillation, a framework that allows a text-to-image generative model to teach another model without exposing it to identifiable data. Here, we are interested in the privacy issue faced by a data provider who wishes to share their data via a multimodal generative model. A question that immediately arises is ``How can a data provider ensure that the generative model is not leaking identifiable information about a patient?''. Our solution consists of (1) training a first diffusion model on real data (2) generating a synthetic dataset using this model and filtering it to exclude images with a re-identifiability risk (3) training a second diffusion model on the filtered synthetic data only. We showcase that datasets sampled from models trained with privacy distillation can effectively reduce re-identification risk whilst maintaining downstream performance.

Abstract

Fine-grained classification is a challenging task that involves identifying subtle differences between objects within the same category. This task is particularly challenging in scenarios where data is scarce. Visual transformers (ViT) have recently emerged as a powerful tool for image classification, due to their ability to learn highly expressive representations of visual data using self-attention mechanisms. In this work, we explore Semi-ViT, a ViT model fine tuned using semi-supervised learning techniques, suitable for situations where we have lack of annotated data. This is particularly common in e-commerce, where images are readily available but labels are noisy, nonexistent, or expensive to obtain. Our results demonstrate that Semi-ViT outperforms traditional convolutional neural networks (CNN) and ViTs, even when fine-tuned with limited annotated data. Abstract

In order to achieve good performance and generalisability, medical image segmentation models should be trained on sizeable datasets with sufficient variability. Due to ethics and governance restrictions, and the costs associated with labelling data, scientific development is often stifled, with models trained and tested on limited data. Data augmentation is often used to artificially increase the variability in the data distribution and improve model generalisability. Recent works have explored deep generative models for image synthesis, as such an approach would enable the generation of an effectively infinite amount of varied data, addressing the generalisability and data access problems. However, many proposed solutions limit the user's control over what is generated. In this work, we propose brainSPADE, a model which combines a synthetic diffusion-based label generator with a semantic image generator. Our model can produce fully synthetic brain labels on-demand, with or without pathology of interest, and then generate a corresponding MRI image of an arbitrary guided style. Experiments show that brainSPADE synthetic data can be used to train segmentation models with performance comparable to that of models trained on real data., Comment: 12 pages, 2 (+2 App.) figures, 3 tables. Abstract

Deep neural networks have brought remarkable breakthroughs in medical image analysis. However, due to their data-hungry nature, the modest dataset sizes in medical imaging projects might be hindering their full potential. Generating synthetic data provides a promising alternative, allowing to complement training datasets and conducting medical image research at a larger scale. Diffusion models recently have caught the attention of the computer vision community by producing photorealistic synthetic images. In this study, we explore using Latent Diffusion Models to generate synthetic images from high-resolution 3D brain images. We used T1w MRI images from the UK Biobank dataset (N=31,740) to train our models to learn about the probabilistic distribution of brain images, conditioned on covariables, such as age, sex, and brain structure volumes. We found that our models created realistic data, and we could use the conditioning variables to control the data generation effectively. Abstract

Human anatomy, morphology, and associated diseases can be studied using medical imaging data. However, access to medical imaging data is restricted by governance and privacy concerns, data ownership, and the cost of acquisition, thus limiting our ability to understand the human body. A possible solution to this issue is the creation of a model able to learn and then generate synthetic images of the human body conditioned on specific characteristics of relevance (e.g., age, sex, and disease status). Deep generative models, in the form of neural networks, have been recently used to create synthetic 2D images of natural scenes. Still, the ability to produce high-resolution 3D volumetric imaging data with correct anatomical morphology has been hampered by data scarcity and algorithmic and computational limitations. This work proposes a generative model that can be scaled to produce anatomically correct, high-resolution, and realistic images of the human brain, with the necessary quality to allow further downstream analyses. The ability to generate a potentially unlimited amount of data not only enables large-scale studies of human anatomy and pathology without jeopardizing patient privacy, but also significantly advances research in the field of anomaly detection, modality synthesis, learning under limited data, and fair and ethical AI. 13. Clinical and Molecular Features of Malignant Pleural Effusion in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) of a Caucasian Population.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: The diversity of patients with malignant pleural effusion (MPE) due to non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) as well as the variability in mutations makes it essential to improve molecular characterization. Objective: Describe clinical, pathological, and molecular characteristics MPE in a Caucasian population. Materials and Methods: Retrospective study of patients with NSCLC diagnosis who had undergone a molecular study from 1 January 2018–31 December 2022. Univariate analysis was performed to compare patient characteristics between the group with and without MPE and molecular biomarkers. Results: A total of 400 patients were included; 53% presented any biomarker and 29% had MPE.PDL1, which was the most frequent. EGFR mutation was associated with women (OR:3.873) and lack of smoking (OR:5.105), but not with MPE. Patients with pleural effusion were older and had lower ECOG. There was no significant difference in the presence of any biomarker. We also did not find an association between the presence of specific mutations and MPE (22.4% vs. 18%, p = 0.2), or PDL1 expression (31.9% vs. 35.9%, p = 0.3). Being younger constituted a protective factor for the presence of MPE (OR:0.962; 95% CI 0.939–0.985, p = 0.002), as well as ECOG ≤ 1 (OR:0.539; 95% CI 0.322–0.902, p = 0.01). Conclusions: This is the first study that describes the clinical, pathological, and molecular characteristics of MPE patients due to NSCLC in a Caucasian population. Although overall we did not find significant differences in the molecular profile between patients with MPE and without effusion, EGFR mutation was associated with a tendency towards pleural progression. Abstract

Cortical neurogenesis follows a simple lineage: apical radial glia cells (RGCs) generate basal progenitors, and these produce neurons. How this occurs in species with expanded germinal zones and a folded cortex, such as human, remains unclear. We used single-cell RNA sequencing from individual cortical germinal zones in ferret and barcoded lineage tracking to determine the molecular diversity of progenitor cells and their lineages. We identified multiple RGC classes that initiate parallel lineages, converging onto a common class of newborn neuron. Parallel RGC classes and transcriptomic trajectories were repeated across germinal zones and conserved in ferret and human, but not in mouse. Neurons followed parallel differentiation trajectories in the gyrus and sulcus, with different expressions of human cortical malformation genes. Progenitor cell lineage multiplicity is conserved in the folded mammalian cerebral cortex.

29. Gravitation as a Plastic Distortion of the Lorentz Vacuum

Abstract

In this paper we present a theory of the gravitational field where this field (a kind of square root of g) is represented by a (1,1)-extensor field h describing a plastic distortion of the Lorentz vacuum (a real substance that lives in a Minkowski spacetime) due to the presence of matter. The field h distorts the Minkowski metric extensor in an appropriate way (see below) generating what may be interpreted as an effective Lorentzian metric extensor g and also it permits the introduction of different kinds of parallelism rules on the world manifold, which may be interpreted as distortions of the parallelism structure of Minkowski spacetime and which may have non null curvature and/or torsion and/or nonmetricity tensors. We thus have different possible effective geometries which may be associated to the gravitational field and thus its description by a Lorentzian geometry is only a possibility, not an imposition from Nature. Moreover, we developed with enough details the theory of multiform functions and multiform functionals that permitted us to successfully write a Lagrangian for h and to obtain its equations of motion, that results equivalent to Einstein field equations of General Relativity (for all those solutions where the manifold M is diffeomorphic to R^4. However, in our theory, differently from the case of General Relativity, trustful energy-momentum and angular momentum conservation laws exist. We express also the results of our theory in terms of the gravitational potential 1-form fields (living in Minkowski spacetime) in order to have results which may be easily expressed with the theory of differential forms. The Hamiltonian formalism for our theory (formulated in terms of the potentials) is also discussed. Abstract

Here (the last paper in a series of four) we end our presentation of the basics of a systematical approach to the differential geometry of a smooth manifold M (supporting a metric field g and a general connection del) which uses the geometric algebras of multivector and extensors (fields) developed in previous papers. The theory of the Riemann and Ricci fields of the the triple (M,del,g)is investigated to for each particular open set U of M through the introduction of a geometric structure on U, i.e., a triple (U,gamma,g) where gamma is a general connection field on U and g is a metric extensor field associated to g. The relation between geometrical structures related by gauge extensor fields is clarified. These geometries may be said to be deformations one of each other. Moreover we study the important case of a class of deformed Levi-Civita geometrical structures and prove key theorems about them that are important in the formulation of geometric theories of the gravitational field.

Abstract

In this paper we introduce a class of mathematical objects called \emph{extensors} and develop some aspects of their theory with considerable detail. We give special names to several particular but important cases of extensors. The \emph{extension,} \emph{adjoint} and \emph{generalization} operators are introduced and their properties studied. For the so-called $(1,1)$-extensors we define the concept of \emph{determinant}, and their properties are investigated. Some preliminary applications of the theory of extensors are presented in order to show the power of the new concept in action. An useful formula for the inversion of $(1,1)$-extensors is obtained.

Abstract

Folding of the cerebral cortex is a fundamental milestone of mammalian brain evolution associated with dramatic increases in size and complexity. Cortex folding takes place during embryonic and perinatal development and is important to optimize the functional organization and wiring of the brain, while allowing fitting a large cortex in a limited cranial volume. Cortex growth and folding are the result of complex cellular and mechanical processes that involve neural stem progenitor cells and their lineages, the migration and differentiation of neurons, and the genetic programs that regulate and fine-tune these processes. Here, we provide an updated overview of the most significant and recent advances in our understanding of developmental mechanisms regulating cortical gyrification.

41. Neocortical neurogenesis in amniote evolution

Abstract

The size of the adult cerebral cortex is highly diverse between different species inside the amniote clade. These differences are mainly due to differences in the total number of brain cells generated, these being neurons and glia cells. The final number of brain cells that a given brain will have is controlled by a process called neurogenesis that takes place during embryonic development. Changes in different aspects of neurogenesis produce different types of cortices. The evolutionary expansion of cortical neurogenesis that takes place across amniotes has been linked to changes in neural progenitor cells, which acquired increased capacity of self-amplification, formed secondary proliferative layers, and increased neuron production. Here, we provide an overview of cellular aspects of neurogenesis that are differently regulated across amniotes and thus that prompt the generation of different types of structures with similar functions but very different size and structural composition.

The aim of this project consists in creating a new way of structuring Education School Physics lessons, based on a logical whatever pedagogical-didactic, instead of anatomical - physiological way. This plan has been put into practice with students of 4th grade from Padres Redentoristas Social Center, located in Castelo Branco (Portugal) in swimming classes. With this purpose we designed an intervention plan in the water, which consists in four games encouraging them to do it by the good way. As a result, we analyse the results obtained in the planning, intervention and the subsequent hypothetical development of a good game that was carried out. Abstract

Contact is defined as a human need and its use in the educational field is justified against the moral panic that predominates in society. This article deepens into the reality of the use of contact as a pedagogical tool in relationships between the specialist in Physical Education and the student. Its objective is to analyse situations of intergenerational contact in the Physical-Motor Expression classroom and the aquatic environment at a school in Castelo Branco, Portugal. It was based on the bodily experience of a teacher who carried out her internship with 150 students in an Erasmus mobility. A professional from the school was involved as well. A qualitative method of research is adopted in order to detect the different pedagogical functions of touch, through the Teaching Body Journal and a semi-structured interview with a professional. We verified that the teacher-student contact has great value in the teaching and acquisition of body techniques, in emotional regulation and in auxiliary tasks. We conclude that contact can occur in multiple ways in the classroom and if it is used properly, its pedagogical value is high. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Con el objetivo de exponer los orígenes del arte feminista en España, contextualizando la situación de las artistas de los años sesenta y setenta marcadas por los roles de género y el sometimiento heteropatriarcal sostenidos por el tardofranquismo y la transición, sin dejar de analizar la permeabilidad de dicha temática en el desarrollo de los discursos expositivos desde los sesenta hasta la actualidad, planteo un análisis comparativo entre el arte feminista español y el americano. Articulo el relato en torno a las temáticas de mayor relevancia, visibilizando la denuncia de la discriminación femenina y la crítica a la hegemonía del sistema cultural patriarcal ejercida por las artistas feministas de la época. Construyo el núcleo informativo sirviéndome de una metodología biográfica, sociológica, iconográfica y de barrido bibliográfico con el fin de revisar la historiografía desde el género como categoría de análisis y esclarecer el papel de las mujeres en el arte.

Abstract

Habitantes Paisajistas es una herramienta y metodología de trabajo: utilizar el acto de caminar como forma de aproximación e interpretación del paisaje. Cada año propone un tema relevante en torno al cual activar procesos de reflexión, creación y aprendizajes colectivos, integrando en la práctica artística diferentes saberes y disciplinas. Un proyecto artístico de Virginia López, que ha iniciado su desarrollo en el 2015 dentro del marco del proyecto PACA_Proyectos Artísticos Casa Antonino: un artist run space auto-gestionado en la zona periurbana y rural de Gijón (Asturias) desde el que la artista propone experiencias de formación, creación y experimentación artística contemporánea, de manera que la práctica e investigación artística, además de tener una valencia estética y poética, generen nuevas vías de interpretación y de conocimiento del territorio en el que operan, a través de valores culturales, ambientales y sociales. Habitantes Paisajistas se realiza en colaboración con el museo arqueológico Villa Romana de Veranes, en el intento de acercar nuevos públicos y en particular la comunidad local a la institución a través de nuevas prácticas donde lo educativo, lo experiencial y lo artístico se relacionan con la memoria de nuestros paisajes cotidianos, favoreciendo lazos afectivos e intelectuales. En este texto se describen metodologías y experiencias realizadas, contexto local de desarrollo, referencias y contradicciones surgidas en el camino.
