Abstract

Mn1.5X0.5Sn (X = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co) nanomaterials in the hexagonal Ni2In-type crystal structure have been prepared using arc-melting and melt spinning. All the rapidly quenched Mn1.5X0.5Sn alloys show moderate saturation magnetizations with the highest value of 458 emu/cm3 for Mn1.5Fe0.5Sn, but their Curie temperatures are less than 300 K. All samples except the Cr containing one show spin-glass-like behavior at low temperature. The magnetic anisotropy constants calculated from the high-field magnetization curves at 100 K are on the order of 1 Merg/cm3. The vacuum annealing of the ribbons at 550 oC significantly improved their magnetic properties with the Curie temperature increasing from 206 K to 273 K for Mn1.5Fe0.5Sn.

Abstract

A magneto-optically active thin film of Rb$_{j}$Co$_{k}$[Fe(CN)$_{6}$]$_{l}$ $\cdot$$n$H$_{2}$O has been prepared using a sequential assembly method. Upon irradiation with light and at 5 K, the net magnetization of the film increased when the surface of the film was oriented parallel to the external magnetic field of 0.1 T. However, when the surface of the film was perpendicular to the field, the net magnetization \emph{decreased} upon irradiation. The presence of dipolar fields and the low-dimensional nature of the system are used to describe the orientation dependence of the photo-induced magnetization. The ability to increase or decrease the photo-induced magnetization by changing the orientation of the system with respect to the field is a new phenomenon that may be useful in future device applications., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

The magnetization of a thin Fe-Co cyanide film has been investigated from 5 K to 300 K and in fields up to 500 G. Upon illumination with visible light, the magnetization of the film rapidly increases. Self-promotion is prevalent and aversive. We observe that people who think their life is meaningful tend to experience less negative emotional responses to others’ self-promotional attempts. A simple intervention involving a reflection on the presence of meaning in one’s life significantly improves recipients’ responses to others’ self-promotion.

Lamberton (2020) presents a brilliant and enriching read of our main arguments through a series of analogies with the life and work of Charles Sanders Peirce on self‐control. Lamberton also presents examples of “reflective self‐control conflicts” that involve choosing among ideals, social norms, and moral values rather than just consumption goals. These questions are arguably much more fascinating than the mundane consumption decisions that we have discussed in our paper, and we thank Lamberton for raising them!

19. Variable block size coding of images with hybrid quantization

Abstract

This paper describes a progressive image transmission (PIT) scheme using a variable block size coding technique in conjunction with a variety of quantization schemes in the transform domain. The proposed scheme uses a region growing technique to partition the images so that regions of different sizes can be addressed using a small amount of side information. This segmentation divides the image into five different regions that vary in size based on the details within the image. High-detail blocks are classified into four different categories based on the energy distribution followed by vector quantization (VQ), and low-detail blocks are encoded with scalar quantization (SQ). Progressive refinement is achieved by proper masking of the information in the transform domain. Simulation results show that the reconstructed images preserve fine and pleasant qualities based on both subjective and mean square error criteria. Also, the receiver reconstructs more details in each stage so that the observer can recognize the image quickly.

Abstract

During International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) expeditions, shipboard-generated data provide the first insights into the cored sequences. The natural gamma radiation (NGR) of the recovered material, for example, is routinely measured on the ocean drilling research vessel DV JOIDES Resolution. At present, only total NGR counts are readily available as shipboard data, although full NGR spectra (counts as a function of gamma-ray energy level) are produced and archived. These spectra contain unexploited information, as one can estimate the sedimentary contents of potassium (K), thorium (Th), and uranium (U) from the characteristic gamma-ray energies of isotopes in the 40K, 232Th, and 238U radioactive decay series. Dunlea et al. [2013] quantified K, Th and U contents in sediment from the South Pacific Gyre by integrating counts over specific energy levels of the NGR spectrum. However, the algorithm used in their study is unavailable to the wider scientific community due to commercial proprietary reasons. Here, we present a new MATLAB algorithm for the quantification of NGR spectra that is transparent and accessible to future NGR users. We demonstrate the algorithm's performance by comparing its results to shore-based inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), inductively coupled plasma-emission spectrometry (ICP-ES), and quantitative wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses. Samples for these comparisons come from eleven sites (U1341, U1343, U1366-U1369, U1414, U1428-U1430, U1463) cored in two oceans during five expeditions. In short, our algorithm rapidly produces detailed high-quality information on sediment properties during IODP expeditions at no extra cost.

24. Mg-aminoclay as stabilizer for synthesizing highly stable and reactive nZVI for decontamination

Abstract

Despite the large surface area and superior reactivity of nZVI, its limited stability is a major obstacle for in situ subsurface remediation. In this study, Mg-aminoclay (MgAC) was applied for the first time as a stabilizer in nZVI synthesis. With increased doses of Mg-aminoclay, nZVI particle growth was inhibited and thin sheathed grape-like nZVI particles with higher crystallinity were produced. The coated nZVI were smaller and non-aggregating, and it can reduced nitrate 350-fold faster than uncoated. The higher stability of MgAC coated nZVI was achieved by electrostatic repulsion from the positively charged MgAC coating. Moreover, the proper washing strategy is essential to keep stability and reactivity during preparation and transport.

Abstract

The magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of iron-substituted Co2VGa alloys, Co2-xFexVGa (x = 0, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.3), were investigated. The Fe-substituted samples, prepared by arc melting, melt spinning, and annealing, crystallized in the L21 Heusler structure, without any secondary phases. The Curie temperature and high-field magnetization at 50 K decreased from 345 K and 44 emu/g (1.90 μB/f.u.) for Co2VGa to 275 K and 39 emu/g (1.66 μB/f.u.) for Co1.7Fe0.3VGa, respectively, but the maximum entropy change remained almost insensitive to Fe concentration for x ≤ 0.2, the highest value being 3.3 J/kgK at 7 T for Co1.85Fe0.15VGa. First-principle calculations show that Co2VGa retains its half-metallic band structure until at least 30% of the cobalt atoms are replaced by Fe atoms. The wide operating temperature window near room temperature and the lack of thermal and magnetic hysteresis are the interesting features of these materials for application in room-temperature magnetic refrigeration. Abstract

Recent discovery of a new class of materials, spin-gapless semiconductors (SGS), has attracted considerable attention in the last fewyears, primarily due to potential applications in the emerging field of spin-based electronics (spintronics). Here, we investigate structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of one potential SGS compound, MnCr-VAl, using various experimental and theoretical techniques. Our calculations show that this material exhibits ~ 0.5 eV band gap for the majority-spin states, while for the minority-spin it is nearly gapless. The calculated magnetic moment for the completely ordered structure is 2.9 μB/f.u., which is different from our experimentally measured value of almost zero. This discrepancy is explained by the structural disorder. In particular, A2 type disorder, where Mn or Cr atoms exchange their positions with Al atoms, results in induced antiferromagnetic exchange coupling, which, at a certain level of disorder, effectively reduces the total magnetic moment to zero. This is consistent with our x-ray diffraction measurements which indicate the presence of A2 disorder in all of our samples. In addition, we also show that B2 disorder does not result in antiferromagnetic exchange coupling and therefore does not significantly reduce the total magnetic moment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
