Abstract

The goal of the FAZIA Collaboration is the design of a new-generation 4π detector array for heavy-ion collisions with radioactive beams. This article summarizes the main results of the R&D phase, devoted to the search for significant improvements of the techniques for charge and mass identification of reaction products. This was obtained by means of a systematic study of the basic detection module, consisting of two transmission-mounted silicon detectors followed by a CsI(Tl) scintillator. Significant improvements in ΔE-E and pulse-shape techniques were obtained by controlling the doping homogeneity and the cutting angles of silicon and by putting severe constraints on thickness uniformity. Purposely designed digital electronics contributed to identification quality. The issue of possible degradation related to radiation damage of silicon was also addressed. The experimental activity was accompanied by studies on the physics governing signal evolution in silicon. The good identification quality obtained with the prototypes during the R&D phase, allowed us to investigate also some aspects of isospin physics, namely isospin transport and odd-even staggering. Now, after the conclusion of the R&D period, the FAZIA Collaboration has entered the demonstrator phase, with the aim of verifying the applicability of the devised solutions for the realization of a larger-scale experimental set-up.

Abstract

A new technique of large-area thin ion implanted silicon detectors has been developed within the R&D performed by the FAZIA Collaboration. The essence of the technique is the application of a low-temperature baking process instead of high-temperature annealing. This thermal treatment is performed after B+ ion implantation and Al evaporation of detector contacts, made by using a single adjusted Al mask. Extremely thin silicon pads can be therefore obtained. The thickness distribution along the X and Y directions was measured for a prototype chip by the energy loss of α-particles from 241Am (〈E α 〉 = 5.5 MeV). Preliminary tests on the first thin detector (area ≈ 20 × 20 mm2) were performed at the INFN-LNS cyclotron in Catania (Italy) using products emitted in the heavy-ion reaction 84Kr (E = 35 A MeV) + 112Sn. The ΔE − E ion identification plot was obtained using a telescope consisting of our thin ΔE detector (21 μm thick) followed by a typical FAZIA 510 μm E detector of the same active area. The charge distribution of measured ions is presented together with a quantitative evaluation of the quality of the Z resolution. The threshold is lower than 2 A MeV depending on the ion charge.

Ovaj rad daje preliminarni pregled promjena koje su utjecale na poljsko civilno drustvo tijekom procesa europeizacije u devedesetim godinama dvadesetog stoljeca i pocetkom dvadeset prvog stoljeca. Prvo se opisuje i analizira trajna strukturalna transformacija organizacija civilnog drustva. Naglasavaju se fenomeni neravnomjernog razvoja i raznovrsne diferencijacije tog sektora. Zatim se raspravlja o zakonskim i institucionalnim rjesenjima usmjerenim prema izjednacavanju formalnog položaja koji akteri civilnog drustva zauzimaju u javnoj sferi zemlje nasuprot državi i tržisnim akterima. Na slucaju ukljucenosti poljskih aktera civilnoga drustva u nova institucionalizirana partnerstva povezana s koristenjem strukturalnih fondova Europske Unije, novi sporazumi o izjednacavanju, uvedeni u skladu s europeiziranim nacinima vladavine, podvrgavaju se empirijskom testiranju kako bi se ispitala njihova ucinkovitost i primjerenost u postkomunistickoj zemlji.

4. Europeanization of Civil Society in Poland

Abstract

The paper presents a preliminary diagnosis of the changes that have affected Polish civil society along the trajectory of Europeanization over the 1990s and early 2000s. First, the continuing structural transformation of the civil society organizations is described and analysed. The phenomena of uneven growth and multifaceted differentiation of the sector are emphasized. Legal and institutional arrangements aimed at the levelling of the formal position which civil society actors occupy in the public sphere of the country vis-à-vis the state and market actors are then discussed. Using the case of the involvement of Polish civil society actors in new institutionalized partnership settings related to the implementation of EU structural funds, the levelling arrangements, introduced under the banner of Europeanized modes of governance, are finally put to an empirical test to probe their effectiveness and adequacy in the post-Communist country., Ovaj rad daje preliminarni pregled promjena koje su utjecale na poljsko civilno društvo tijekom procesa europeizacije u devedesetim godinama dvadesetog stoljeća i početkom dvadeset prvog stoljeća. Abstract

The epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) is one step in the process through which carcinoma cells metastasize by gaining the cellular mobility associated with mesenchymal cells. This work examines the dual influence of the TGF-β pathway and intercellular contact on the activation of EMT in colon (SW480) and breast (MCF7) carcinoma cells. While the SW480 population revealed an intermediate state between the epithelial and mesenchymal states, the MC7 cells exhibited highly adhesive behavior. However, for both cell lines, an exogenous TGF-β signal and a reduction in cellular confluence can push a subgroup of the population towards the mesenchymal phenotype. Together, these results highlight that, while EMT is induced by the synergy of multiple signals, this activation varies across cell types.

Abstract

Background: Following the formation of a primary carcinoma, neoplastic cells metastasize by undergoing the epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT), which is triggered by cues from inflammatory and stromal cells in the microenvironment. EMT allows epithelial cells to lose their highly adhesive nature and instead adopt the spindle-like appearance, as well as the invasive and migratory behavior, of mesenchymal cells. We hypothesize that a bistable switch between the epithelial and mesenchymal phenotypes governs EMT, allowing the cell to maintain its mesenchymal phenotype even after it leaves the primary tumor microenvironment and EMT-inducing extracellular signal., Results: This work presents a simple mathematical model of EMT, specifically the roles played by four key proteins in the Wnt signaling pathway: Dishevelled (Dvl), E-cadherin, β-catenin, and Slug. The model predicts that following activation of the Wnt pathway, an epithelial cell in the primary carcinoma must attain a threshold level of membrane-bound Dvl to convert to the mesenchymal-like phenotype and maintain that phenotype once it has migrated away from the primary tumor. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis of the model suggests that in both the epithelial and the mesenchymal states, the steady state behavior of E-cadherin and the transcription factor Slug are sensitive to changes in the degradation rate of Slug, while E-cadherin is also sensitive to the IC 50 (half-maximal) concentration of Slug necessary to inhibit E-cadherin production. The steady state behavior of Slug exhibits sensitivity to changes in the rate at which it is induced by β-catenin upon activation of the Wnt pathway. In the presence of sufficient amount of Wnt ligand, E-cadherin levels are sensitive to the ratio of the rate of Slug activation via β-catenin to the IC 50 concentration of Slug necessary to inhibit E-cadherin production., Conclusions: The sensitivity of E-cadherin to the degradation rate of Slug, as well as the IC 50 concentration of Slug necessary to inhibit E-cadherin production, shows how the adhesive nature of the cell depends on finely-tuned regulation of Slug. By highlighting the role of β-catenin in the activation of EMT and the relationship between E-cadherin and Slug, this model identifies critical parameters of therapeutic concern, such as the threshold level of Dvl necessary to inactivate the GSK-3β complex mediating β-catenin degradation, the rate at which β-catenin translocates to the nucleus, and the IC 50 concentration of Slug needed to inhibit E-cadherin production.

Abstract

We experimentally studied the influence of different constructional parameters on the performance of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors based on a commercially available polymer step-index multimode fiber. For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, we experimentally investigated the influence of polishing depth on the characteristics of SPR sensors based on a straight multimode fiber. We also examined the impact of sensing length on the spectral position and strength of the SPR in side-polished straight fibers. To clarify literature contradictions concerning the effect of fiber bending on SPR, we experimentally investigated the performance of U-bent SPR sensing probes based on multimode fibers. We have shown that the SPR can be significantly amplified by bending the polymer fiber with stripped cladding. We also demonstrated that the side-polishing of U-bent sensing probes has little impact on their performance.
