The positioning of the Ardèche river catchments area and its tributaries depends on a whole organized system which follows a long building process in a context of geological and physiographical spatial accommodations.This context cannot be dissociated from the global parameters like erosion, climate variations and eustatic fluctuations generated by continental drift.The development of the gorges de l'Ardèche stems from these fundamental parameters which over time gave its current appearance to the meandering canyon.The Lower Cretaceous limestones have settled as a result of areas made available during the Upper Jurassic.In a hot and humid climate, the progradation of the Urgonian sedimentary systems leads to progressive fillings of accommodations under the constraints of eustatism and the tectonics causing differential subsidence.The structural diagram of the future gorges de l'Ardèche is initiated in this context.The uplift and the progressive emersion of the Lower Cretaceous platform will take place from the Albian-Cenomanian.Starting from the Upper Cretaceous, materials from surrounding seas or weathering deposits coming largely from the Massif Central induce successive subsidences whose tectonosedimentary deformations will interfere with the previously faulted structures.These evolving morphologies favour aerial flows in constant reorganisation at the roof of sedimentary landfills.Water streams, whose circulation direction is oriented N-S to NE-SO, descend from the Massif Central and allow the settling of braided channels and the formation of valleys of various size, under a tropical climate and according to the eustatic variations of the alpine Tethys located to the south.The question here is to understand the distribution and the direction of river circulations during the Upper Cretaceous and Palaeogene as well as in the Lower Oligocene-Miocene, at the beginning of the incision of the Ardèche canyon in the Neogene.A caracterisation protocol carried out by geochemical ICP-AES analysis of Upper Cretaceous and Paleogene samples, referenced on the geological map 889 of Bourg Saint Andéol, makes it possible to compare the geochemical signatures of unpublished sandstone and clay samples, found on the surface and in the caves of the Ardèche karstic plateaus .(Jolivet et al., 2020)., Le positionnement du bassin hydrographique de la rivière Ardèche et de ses affluents dépend de l'ensemble d'un système organisé-organisant qui découle d'un long processus d'édification dans un contexte d'accommodations spatiales géologiques et physiographiques.Ce contexte ne peut être dissocié des paramètres globaux tels que l'érosion, les variations du climat et les fluctuations eustatiques générées par la dérive des continents.L'élaboration des gorges de l'Ardèche découle de ces paramètres fondamentaux qui au cours du temps, lui ont donné son aspect actuel de canyon méandriforme.Les calcaires du Crétacé inférieur s'installent grâce aux espaces disponibles réalisés au Jurassique supérieur.Sous un climat chaud et humide, la progradation des cortèges sédimentaires de l'Urgonien conduit à des remplissages progressifs des accommodations sous les contraintes de l'eustatisme et de la tectonique responsables de subsidences différentielles.C'est dans ce contexte que s'initie le schéma structural des futures gorges de l'Ardèche.Le soulèvement et l'émersion progressive de la plateforme du Crétacé inférieur va avoir lieu dès l'Albien-Cénomanien.A partir du Crétacé supérieur, les matériaux issus des mers environnantes ou des dépôts d'altération provenant en grande partie du Massif Central induisent des subsidences successives dont les déformations tectonosédimentaires vont interférer sur les structures faillées antérieures.Ces morphologies évolutives favorisent des écoulements aériens en constante réorganisation au toit des décharges sédimentaires. Les cours d'eau, dont le sens de circulation est orienté N-S à NE-SO, descendent du Massif Central et permettent l'établissement de chenaux anastomosés et la formation de vallées de dimensions variées sous climat tropical et selon les fluctuations eustatiques de la Téthys alpine située au sud.La question ici est de comprendre la répartition et la direction des circulations fluviatiles durant le Crétacé supérieur et le Paléogène ainsi qu'à l'Oligocène-Miocène inférieur, début de l'incision du canyon de l'Ardèche au Néogène.Un protocole de caractérisation par analyse géochimique ICP-AES d'échantillons du Crétacé supérieur et Paléogène référencés sur la carte géologique de Bourg Saint Andéol-889 permet de comparer les signatures géochimiques d'échantillons inédits, gréseux et argileux, trouvés à la surface et dans les cavités des plateaux karstiques ardéchois.(Jolivet et al., 2020)

Le Pr Jean Rieu et le Pr Bernard Guy sont Professeur émérite de l'École des Mines de Saint-Étienne.; L’École des Mines de Saint-Étienne possède une importante collection de modèles cristallographiques en bois et en terre cuite (plusieurs centaines de modèles). Un travail de restauration et mise en valeur de ces modèles a été effectué (années 2000), au cours duquel un échantillon exceptionnel a été découvert : polyèdre de 170 facettes, du système cubique. Après une description du modèle, on rapporte le travail de numérisation effectué, suivi d’une reproduction par impression 3D et de la réalisation d’un modèle en bronze par fonderie de précision.

Mini-symposia M3 – Foundation, theories, and philosophy of thermodynamics; International audience; Thermodynamics proposes very general principles; the question then arises as to its links with the other major fields of physics that are the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. Is it upstream? Can it be derived from them? Our conviction is that the concepts of physics, including space and time, are a way of naming comparisons between phenomena, within a relational approach. Each field of physics results from a particular perspective on reality, and does not reflect the particular functioning, on its own, of a limited segment of that reality. The question then is not to try to link supposedly achieved mathematical corpuses corresponding to each of these fields, but, by returning to the study of "raw" phenomena, to find, within the different fields, the qualities still hidden and already perceived in the others. In this spirit, we will discuss several concepts (each one is brought rather by one field) such as: time, space, movement, locality / non-locality, conservation / evolution, reversibility / irreversibility, scale, quantization (discretization), probability, opening / closing of systems, qualification of physical quantities by quadrivectors, Lorentz invariance, etc. We will show the cross contributions between thermodynamics, quantum mechanics and relativity theory, leading to a shift in concepts, and suggesting new avenues of research at the crossroads of the three fields. On this occasion, we will take a look at other ways of understanding thermodynamics by other authors (Bejan, Ben-Naim, Mariano, Muschik).Participation to the Mini-symposium “Foundation, theories and philosophy of thermodynamics” (Peter Van).

The production of normal portland cement (NPC) accounts for about 5%-7% of the total man-made CO2 emissions. One of the low CO2 alternatives to NPC is sulfoaluminate cement (CSA), mainly composed of ye’elimite (C4A3S), belite (C2S) and sulfate source (CS or CSH2). Its main hydrated phase is ettringite (C6A3SH32). CSA are known for their poor workability and their short setting time, which require the use of superplasticizers and retarders. The aim of this work is to investigate: (i) the effect of citric acid and polycarboxylate superplasticizers (PCE) on the hydration and rheology of CSA; and (ii) the effect of citric acid on the dispersing effectiveness of PCEs. Two PCEs, with the same chemical structure and different molecular structure, were studied. Isothermal calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to describe the hydration process, while rheological properties were characterized with a flow test. Adsorption measurements were carried out with total organic carbon analyzer and ionic chromatography. The results show that the combination of citric acid and PCE allows better retention of workability over time. However, a competitive adsorption between citric acid and PCE decreases the initial dispersion.

International audience; This paper presents a new method for estimating the parameters of a stochastic geometric model for multiphase flow image processing using local measures. Local measures differ from global measures in that they are only based on a small part of a binary image and consequently provide different information of certain properties such as area and perimeter. Since local measures have been shown to be helpful in estimating the typical grain elongation ratio of a homogeneous Boolean model, the objective of this study was to use these local measures to statistically infer the parameters of a more complex non-Boolean model from a sample of observations. An optimization algorithm is used to minimize a cost function based on the likelihood of a probability density of local measurements. The performance of the model is analysed using numerical experiments and real observations. The errors relative to real images of most of the properties of the model-generated images are less than 2%. The covariance and particle size distribution are also calculated and compared.

The Boisson synclinal belongs to the geographic extent of the eastern NE-SW axis of the Alès ditch, underlined by the Barjac fault, in the set of folded structures mainly oriented E-W and breaking NNE-SSW, that have affected the Cretaceous terrains of the northern scrublands or the Gard at the end of the Lower Cretaceous until Paleogene times. This structural arrangement will favour sediment depositions of Upper Cretaceous times found in the periphery of the Massif Central and in particular in the eastern part of the Alès groove. These sediments are partially shrouded by those of Eocene times overlapping them. (Jolivet et al., 2020) In this paper the mapping of geological features is taken up in order to better refine and complete the studied zone described in the geological map of Alès (912). A characterisation protocol through geochemical ICP-AES analysis of samples of the Upper Cretaceous referenced on the geological maps will also permit to establish the major, trace and transition elements of each geological stage from Cenomanian to Santonian., Le synclinal de Boisson s'inscrit dans l'emprise géographique de l'axe oriental NE-SO du fossé d'Alès souligné par la faille de Barjac et fait partie de l'ensemble des structures plissées d'orientation générale E-O et cassantes N.NE -S.SO qui ont affectées les terrains crétacés des garrigues septentrionales du Gard à la fin le Crétacé inférieur jusqu'au Paléogène. Cet ordonnancement structural va favoriser les dépôts du Crétacé supérieur que l'on retrouve en périphérie du Massif Central et en particulier dans la partie Est du sillon d'Alès. Ces sédiments sont masqués en partie par ceux de l'Eocène qui les chevauchent. (Jolivet et al., 2020) Dans cet article, la cartographie des structures géologiques est reprise afin de mieux affiner et compléter la zone étudiée décrite dans la carte géologique d'Alès (912). Un protocole de caractérisation par analyse géochimique ICP-AES d'échantillons du Crétacé supérieur référencés sur les cartes géologiques permet ainsi de déterminer les éléments majeurs, les éléments traces et de transition de chaque étage allant du Cénomanien au Santonien.

International audience; Magnesium sulfate-water vapor is an interesting working pair of thermochemical materials for compact inter-seasonal heat storage at low temperature. Total dehydration of magnesium sulfate heptahydrate shows a theoretical storage energy density of 2.8 GJ·m−3. However, kinetic data are poorly studied up to now making use of this material difficult for a practical storage application. In the present work, a kinetic study of the dehydration of MgSO4·6H2O powder at low temperature (35 to 60°C) and at low water vapor pressure (2 to 21 hPa) is carried out using thermogravimetric analysis in isobaric-isothermal conditions. A mathematical model is developed for this bivariant system and validated representing the mechanism of dehydration: water molecules diffusion in the solid solution followed by transfer of these molecules from the surface to the atmosphere. The transfer of water molecules at the surface during dehydration is identified as rate-determining step. The fractional conversion and reaction rate of the dehydration reaction are calculated and comparedto the experimental data.

Bernard GUY is civil mining engineer (Mines Paris), Doctor of Science (Pierre and Marie Curie University, Paris), emeritus research director at the Ecole des Mines de Saint-Etienne, Institut Mines Télécom. Former director of the geology department of the Ecole des Mines, he conducts research and teaches in earth sciences, physics and philosophy of science. He has organized and co-organized international conferences in thermodynamics (Joint European Thermodynamics Conference), and philosophy of science (Workshops on contradiction). In the present paper, he puts the notion of rhythm to the test of his understanding of the fundamental link between space and time, captured in the primacy of movement. A composition of the usual substantial rationality with a relational rationality is necessary for this. A certain number of points are set out in a preliminary way: – rhythm articulates space and time (or spatiality and temporality) : the trace in space (which is memory) makes it possible to express the (possibly periodic) structure of the rhythm by comparison with the development of the temporal process in progress; – one merely appreciates the rhythms in relation to each other; – to stabilize these comparisons one needs to choose a standard rhythm in a conventional way; – if one wants to see this need for convention, the question of the periodicity of the rhythm at the limit does not arise; – relational thinking functions in two stages and one can oppose the rhythm in its first apprehension by perception on the one hand, with its analysis and modelling in a discourse on the other. We thus find ourselves at a crossroads: – the rhythms of nature influence the rhythms of man (and the time and space of nature provide measures of general validity); and, conversely, if we may say so, – understanding the rhythms of nature does not avoid human conventions, or choices. In the natural and human sciences respectively, rhythm appears first – as a regular or periodic phenomenon, in time, space, or both, in relation to the propagation of a wave; and – as the perceived/transcribed structure, through the succession in space and/or time, of more or less remarkable events based on human activity s.l. Bernard Guy now insists on the interplay of relative movements as a support for rhythms (and marking the limits between spatiality and associated temporalities), and the hypothesis of assumed/decided equal increments dividing the movement; these points allow the definition of rhythm to converge on both sides (natural sciences/human sciences). Bernard Guy insiste maintenant sur le jeu de mouvements relatifs comme support des rythmes (et marquant des limites entre spatialités et temporalités associées), et l’hypothèse d’incréments supposés / décidés égaux découpant le mouvement ; ces points permettent de faire converger la définition du rythme des deux côtés (sciences de la nature / sciences de l’homme). Quelques exemples sont donnés, empruntés tant aux sciences humaines et sociales qu’aux sciences de la nature (sciences de la terre en particulier).

The purpose of this article is to present the results of hydrological monitoring of the Cèze river basin in its limestone zone with a protocol based on synchronizing flow measurements in the river with those of the springs. The aim is to understand the functioning of the river and karst springs and to determine their contribution to the flow of the Ceze. Fourteen stations were equipped with LTC probes (Height, Temperature and Conductivity): 11 probes at each source and 3 in the river.Previously, an altimetric profile made it possible to geolocate the sources and anthropogenic areas as well as the suitable sections of the river for gauging. To precisely locate the loss zones of the Ceze and detremine the corresponding flow values, 11 gauge campaigns were carried out in rivers during three hydrological cycles from 2013 to 2015. Source flows were also measured to calculate hydraulic balance between losses and inflows along the study section.The results show variability in sources flows related to the size of the drained watershed and the underground geological configuration. Several sources have a relatively constant flow over the year and thus contribute to compensate the losses of the river. Five sections have been identified alternating areas of losses and karst input from the springs. Analysis of the flows measured during the gauge campaigns carried out over the entire sector studied made it possible to quantify these losses and karst inputs. Comparison of karst inputs according to the measurement period shows that during low water periods the karst contributes more strongly up to 68% of the Ceze river flow, whereas on average water period, karst contributes about 50% of the river flow. The critical analysis of the results obtained focuses on the quality of the differential gauges in the river and those carried out at the sources, the accuracy of the measuring equipment used and the difficulty of taking into account the underflows and recycling of water from the river through alluvial formations. Over the entire river area studied, incorporating all karst springs, the differential between the flow of the Ceze upstream of the gorges and that downstream of the karst springs is positive. For the moment the karst inputs compensate for the losses of the Ceze., Cet article a pour but de présenter les résultats du suivi hydrologique du bassin de la rivière Cèze dans sa zone calcaire à partir d’un protocole fondé sur la synchronisation des mesures de débit dans la rivière avec celles des sources. Il s’agit de comprendre le fonctionnement de la rivière et des sources karstiques et de déterminer leur part contributive au débit de la Cèze. Quatorze stations ont été équipées de sondes LTC (Hauteur, Température et Conductivité) : 11 sondes à chacune des 11 sources et 3 sondes en rivière. Préalablement, un profil en long de la rivière a permis de géolocaliser les sources et les zones anthropisées ainsi que les sections de la rivière propices pour y effectuer des jaugeages. Pour localiser précisément les zones de pertes de la Cèze et déterminer les valeurs de débits correspondantes 11 campagnes de jaugeages ont été réalisées en rivière pendant trois cycles hydrologiques de 2013 à 2015. Les débits des sources ont eux aussi été mesurés afin de calculer des bilans hydrologiques entre les pertes et les apports le long du tronçon étudié. Les résultats montrent la variabilité du débit des sources liées à la taille du bassin versant drainé et à sa configuration géologique. Plusieurs sources ont un débit relativement constant sur l’année et contribuent ainsi au soutien d’étiage en compensant les pertes de la rivière. Cinq tronçons ont été identifiés alternant zones de pertes et d’apports karstiques par les sources. L’analyse des débits mesurés au cours des campagnes de jaugeage réalisées sur la totalité du secteur étudié a permis de quantifier ces pertes et les apports karstiques. La comparaison entre les pertes et les apports du karst en fonction de la période de mesure montre qu’en période de basses eaux le karst contribue jusqu’à 68% du débit de la Cèze alors qu’en moyennes eaux, les eaux d’origine karstique ne participent qu’à environ 50% du débit de la rivière. L’analyse critique des résultats obtenus porte essentiellement sur la qualité des jaugeages différentiels en rivière et ceux effectués aux sources, la précision du matériel de mesure utilisé et la difficulté de prendre en compte les sous-écoulements et les recyclages d’eau de la rivière à travers les formations alluvionnaires. Sur la totalité du secteur étudié de la rivière, en intégrant toutes les sources karstiques, le différentiel entre le débit de la Cèze à l’amont des gorges et celui de l’aval est positif. Les apports karstiques compensent les pertes de la Cèze.

Several artificial tracing campaigns were carried out in 2014 and 2015 to assess underground circulations on both sides of the Cèze river (France, Gard) and specially to identify the role of the Cèze-Ardèche interfluve in a complicated geological context. Previous tracing operations had collected important data on groundwater flows on the Méjannesle- Clap plateau and on the right bank of Ardèche, but did not specify the hydraulic exchanges between the underground flows of the karst massif and the river on the left bank of the Cèze, taking into account the areas of river loss. These new forward-looking tracings required an adapted device from the instrumentation of many springs, on the right bank of the Ardèche and on the left and right bank of the Cèze. The final choice for three tracers was: fluorescein, eosine and rhodamine B. The results of the dyes injections carried out are mainly qualitative because obtained from fluocapteurs and active coals with samples taken which allowed obtaining restitutions. The 4 tracing campaigns made it possible to better identify the points of restitution impacted, the approximate transfer times and this according to the hydrologicalconditions. The results of the tracings in the endokarst (Orgnac aven and Flandin Cave) allow to locate the hydrogeological boundary between the Cèze and Ardèche basins according to periods of high or low water. Tracing of Roméjac losses and losses from the Cèze at Rochegude indicate that surface water infiltration and associated groundwater flow directions are strongly conditioned by the presence of normal faults and the developmentof the karst network. The tracings carried out as part of the work of the ZABR (Rhône Basin Workshop Zone) at the Cèze-Ardèche interfluve, allow to specify the limits of the karst watershed between these two rivers as well as the feeding areas of the springs located in the Canyon de la Cèze from the losses of the river. These artificial tracings are part of a comprehensive approach to assess the exchanges between karst and river flows., Plusieurs traçages artificiels effectués en 2014 et 2015 précisent les circulations souterraines de part et d’autre de la rivière Cèze (France, Gard) et identifient en particulier le rôle de l’interfluve Cèze-Ardèche dans un contexte géologique complexe. Des opérations de traçage antérieures avaient permis de recueillir des données importantes sur les circulations des eaux souterraines au niveau du plateau de Méjannes-le-Clap et du côté du versant ardéchois sans toutefois préciser les échanges hydrauliques entre les écoulements souterrains du massif karstique et la rivière en rive gauche de la Cèze en prenant en compte les zones de perte de la rivière. Ces nouveaux traçages à but prospectif ont nécessité un dispositif adapté à partir de l’instrumentation d’un maximum de sources, en rive droite de l’Ardèche et en rive gauche et droite de la Cèze. Le choix final s’est porté sur trois traceurs la fluorescéine, l’éosine et la rhodamine B. Les résultats des colorations sont essentiellement qualitatifs car obtenus à partir de fluocapteurs à base de charbons actifs avec prélèvements d’échantillons d’eau. Ces 4 traçages cernent les points de restitutions impactés et les temps approximatifs de transfert en fonction des conditions hydrologiques. Les traçages dans l’endokarst comme ceux de l’aven d’Orgnac et de la grotte Flandin précisent la limite hydrogéologique entre le bassin de la Cèze et celui de l’Ardèche en fonction des périodes de hautes eaux ou basses eaux. Les colorations des pertes du Roméjac et de la Cèze à Rochegude indiquent que les infiltrations des eaux de surface associées et les directions des écoulements souterrains sont fortement conditionnées par la présence d’un réseau structural cassant et le développement du réseau karstique. Ces traçages réalisés dans le cadre des travaux de la ZABR (Zone Atelier Bassin du Rhône) au niveau de l’interfluve Cèze-Ardèche, précisent les limites de bassins versants karstiques entre ces deux rivières ainsi que les zones d’alimentation des sources situées dans le canyon de la Cèze à partir des pertes de la rivière. Cette approche s’intègre dans une démarche globale d’évaluation des échanges entre les écoulements provenant du karst et ceux de la rivière.

International audience; Most former industrial sites are contaminated by mixtures of trace elements and organic pollutants. Levels of pollutants do not provide information regarding their biological impact, bioavailability and possible interactions between substances. There is genuine interest in combining chemical analyses with biological investigations. We studied a brownfield where several industrial activities were carried out starting in the 1970s, (incineration of pyralene transformers, recovery of copper by burning cables in the open air). Four representative plots showing different levels of polychlorobiphenyls were selected. Organic and trace metal levels were measured together with soil pedological characteristics. The bacterial community structure and functional diversity were assessed by 16S metagenomics with deep sequencing and community-level physiological profiling. Additionally, a vegetation survey was performed. Polychlorobiphenyls (8 mg.kg−1 to 1500 mg.kg−1) were from 2.4 × 103-fold to 6 × 105-fold higher than the European background level of 2.5 μg.kg−1. Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans ranged from 0.5 to 8.0 μg.kg−1. The soil was also contaminated with trace metals, i.e., Cu > 187, Zn > 217 and Pb > 372 mg.kg−1. Location within the study area, trace metal content and soil humidity were stronger determinants than organic pollutants of bacterial community structures and activities. Thus, the highest biological activity and the greatest bacteriological richness were observed in the plot that was less contaminated with trace metals, despite the high level of organic pollutants in the plot. Moreover, trace element pollution was associated with a relatively low presence of Actinobacteria and Rhizobia. The plot with the highest metal contamination was rich in metal-resistant bacteria such as Sphingomonadales, Geodermatophilaceae and KD4–96 (Chloroflexi phylum). Acidobacteria and Sphingomonadales, capable of resisting trace metals and degrading persistent organic pollutants, were dominant in the plots that had accumulated metal and organic contamination, but bacterial activity was lower in these plots than in the other plots.

Without claiming to solve all the difficulties associated with it, we propose to insist on the link between time and space, as the theory of relativity invites us to do; but going further into the idea of ​​a conceptual unity (relativity still keeps two distinct concepts, two types of instruments, rulers and clocks, and always considers in advance two sets of variables). A reflection of this kind cannot avoid a discussion on how our rationality works in building our knowledge of the world. In composition with the more usual substantial rationality, it is appropriate to speak of a relational rationality: inside the world, we can only make comparisons / oppositions (time is not space, space is not time) without being able to assign to one or the other a list of characters of its own. In this context, we are led to give to movement a primary character (beginning with showing it, before defining it with words). Space and time are derived from it: space is associated with relatively slower movements than those on which we define time. To make our point of view understood, we will use thought experiments: according to the speed scales, mountains move like the waves of the sea, space is transformed into time; or, on the contrary, the grains of sand in the hourglass are motionless like the graduations of a ruler, time is transformed into space. We will discuss the epistemological status of such a point of view (role of images; use of fiction in science, in the sense of the philosopher Hans Vaihinger, 1852-1933).This opens numerous consequences in physics. A first list will be proposed: a look at the “speed” of light; the twins paradox; Lorentz transformation and the construction of time; relations between quantum mechanics and general relativity from the point of view of their representations of time and space; composition of non-collinear Lorentz transformations; understanding thermodynamics … Other avenues of research emerge in humanities and social sciences (anthropology, history, linguistics, mesology, psychology…).

The purpose of this article is to characterize, only on a geochemical plan (major and minor elements and traces), the alteration processes and their consequences on the karsts of the northern scrublands of the Gard department and those of the southern Ardèche, where the caves have conserved sediment depositions of late Cretaceous and Paleogene times, coming from their surface. The protocol involves comparing the constituent elements of the grounds referenced on the geological maps with those found in various depressions and epikarstic ravins and hypogaea of the endokarst. This allows to assess the different chemical signatures and to link known geological criteria to samples, so far unprecedented. These samples have been taken on each side of a NE-SW axis between the Dent de Rez and the Mont Bouquet. Some have been extracted SW of Bagnols sur Cèze or in the Euzet region. The geochemical characterization of the alterites taken from the different stratigraphic sequences from the Lower Cretaceous to the Upper Eocene suggests that only the lower and middle Eocene alterites left their foot prints in the karst. From the study of , the origin of these alterital formations via ancient hydrographic systems, some traces of which are still visible, canbehighlighted It isalso possible to deducetheir contribution to the establishment of karst aquifer structures of the Barremo-Bédoulien., Le propos de cet article est de caractériser uniquement sur un plan géochimique (éléments majeurs, mineurs et traces), les processus d'altération et leurs conséquences sur les karsts des garrigues septentrionales du département du Gard et ceux du sud de l'Ardèche dont les cavités conservent des dépôts de sédiments du Crétacé supérieur et du Paléogène provenant de leur surface. Le protocole de caractérisation fondé sur une analyse des échantillons par ICP-AES consiste à comparer les éléments constitutifs des terrains référencés sur les cartes géologiques avec ceux retrouvés dans différentes dépressions et anfractuosités épikarstiques et hypogées de l'endokarst. Ce protocole permet d'évaluer les différentes signatures chimiques et de rattacher des critères géologiques connus à des échantillons jusque-là inédits. Ces échantillons ont été prélevés de part et d'autre d'un axe NE-SO allant de la Dent de Rez au Mont Bouquet. Certains ont été extraits au SO de Bagnols sur Cèze ou dans la région d'Euzet. La caractérisation géochimique des altérites prélevées dans les différentes séquences stratigraphiques du Crétacé inférieur jusqu’à l’Eocène supérieur permet de déduire que seules, les altérites de l'Eocène inférieur et moyen ont laissé leurs empreintes dans le karst. A partir de l’étude de leurs propriétés chimiques, la provenance de ces formations altéritiques via des systèmes lacustres carbonatés à salinité variable dont certaines traces sont encore visibles, peut être mise en évidence. Il est également possible d’en déduire leur contribution à la mise en place des structures aquifères karstiques du Barrémo-Bédoulien.

Il a été confirmé que ce phénomène peut provoquer des ruptures brutales de pièces. La tomographie a permis de visualiser la porosité dans un échantillon d’acier moulé et d’estimer le volume et la distribution des cavités.

International audience; This article presents the coupling of a crystallization model of gas hydrate to a mechanistic gas-liquid slug flow model in order to understand: (i) heat transfer limitation processes due to reheating of mixture and consequent decrease of crystallization driving force; and (ii) mass transfer limitation due to porosity evolution of the crystalline structure. Application is in flow assurance of gas and oil production operations.

National audience; Pour de nombreux procédés physico-chimiques faisant intervenir des écoulements diphasiques (extraction liquide-liquide, traitement des gaz, etc.), il est très important de quantifier des informations géométriques telles que la fraction volumique ou la distribution de taille de la phase dispersée notamment pour contrôler et améliorer leur efficacité. Dans ce contexte, cette étude porte sur la caractérisation morphométrique d’un écoulement gaz-liquide à partir d’images acquises par imagerie « ombroscopiques » en transmission. L’objectif est d’interpréter ces images afin d’en extraire des informations quantitatives (taille, forme, répartition spatiale) sur la phase dispersée.La difficulté principale de l’analyse de ce type d’images provient de la projection 2D du milieu dispersé. En effet, les particules (bulles, gouttes, etc.) visualisées sur les images 2D ne sont que des projections d’objets 3D ; projections qui se superposent quand la quantité de phase dispersée augmente ce qui rend difficile leur identification directe et leur individualisation donc leur caractérisation géométrique. Dans cette étude des traitements d’images spécifiques ont été mis en place afin de pallier ce problème. Dans un premier temps, des méthodes de reconnaissance de forme basées sur l’extraction d’attributs caractéristiques et d’ajustement de formes a priori sur des groupements de particules ont permis de caractériser des images contenant une densité de projections modérée. Ces approches présentent des limitations quand cette dernière augmente. Par conséquent, dans un deuxième temps, des méthodes basées sur la géométrie aléatoire ont été développées. Dans ce cas, l’idée générale est de simuler des images 2D de projection d’un modèle géométrique 3D du milieu dispersé (dont les paramètres font notamment référence au nombre, à la taille, à la forme et à la dispersion spatiale des bulles) qui soient représentatives des données réelles. Un ajustement (obtenu par optimisation numérique) avec les images acquises permet l’identification des paramètres du modèle et la granulométrie de l’image réelle est considérée comme équivalente à celle de ce modèle optimisé (dont les paramètres sont maîtrisés).Ces deux approches (reconnaissance de forme et géométrie aléatoire) ont été validées, qualifiées et quantifiées sur des images simulées numériquement. Dans un deuxième temps, les deux méthodes ont été appliquées à un écoulement gaz/liquide au sein d’un dispositif de laboratoire, considérant différents débits de gaz (c’est-à-dire pour plusieurs tailles et densités de bulles), afin de déterminer la granulométrie de la phase dispersée.Ces premiers essais semblent montrer que l’approche par géométrie aléatoire est préférable pour la caractérisation morphométrique d’images d’écoulements diphasiques notamment car elle permet d’étudier des milieux dispersés denses et fournit une quantification 3D à partir d’images 2D. Les perspectives de ce travail concernent le développement de modèles plus flexibles dans lesquels des interactions (répulsion ou attraction) entre les particules seront prises en considération.

International audience; Bayesian methods are growing ever more popular in chemical kinetics. The reasons for this and general challenges related to kinetic parameter estimation are shortly reviewed. Most authors content themselves with using one single (mostly uniform) prior distribution. The goal of this paper is to go into some serious issues this raises. The problems of confusing knowledge and ignorance and of reparametrisation are examined. The legitimacy of a probabilistic Ockham’s razor is called into question. A synthetic example involving two reaction models was used to illustrate how merging the parameter space volume with the model accuracy into a single number might be unwise. Robust Bayesian analysis appears to be a simple andstraightforward way to avoid the problems mentioned throughout this article.

Session 4 – HYDRATE MANAGEMENT; International audience; A new predictive model for hydrate formation kinetics that captures the porous structure evolution in time is coupled with a multiphase flow mechanistic model. It is assumed that the hydrate particles behave as sponges, related to hydrate formation under flow shear. The multiphase flow is considered as a gas-liquid slug flow, where the liquid is a water-in-oil emulsion. Closure parameters for the model are thoroughly discussed and the model trend is validated against experimental results obtained in a flow loop. Mass and heat transfer limitation processes are discussed in terms of the theoretical predictions from the model.

International audience; Cyclopentane hydrates-based salt-removal has been considered to be one promising technologies for desalination because it requires a low amount of operating compared to traditional methods such as thermal distillation, membrane separation, or freezing. In order to design a desalination, or water treatment, plant, it is necessary to understand both the thermodynamics of crystallization of hydrates (CPH) in presence of salt, and the kinetics. Therefore, this study aims to determine and model the equilibria of cyclopentane hydrates in the presence of electrolytes. Eight salt mixtures have been considered: NaCl, KCl, NaCl-KCl, CaCl2, Na2SO4, MgCl2, MgCl2-NaCl, MgCl2-NaCl-KCl, with a wide range of concentrations. Two successive experimental procedures, quick and slow, have been applied to determine equilibrium temperatures. The objective of the quick procedure is to provide an initial estimate of the equilibrium temperature. Then, the slow procedure is used to obtain more accurate data. Experimental results show that equilibrium temperatures dropped significantly with an increase in salt concentration, whatever the kinds of salt. In comparison with the literature, the final slow procedure in pure water provides, or with NaCl, provide results very close to studies of Kishimoto et al. and Zylyftari et al., obtained either by slow dissociation or micro Differential Scanning Calorimetry (&#0181-DSC). Moreover, salt co-precipitation can be achieved simultaneously with the cyclopentane hydrate formation. For instance, the eutectic point of four phase equilibrium of {liquid water + liquid CP + CPH + Na2SO4.10H2O} has been obtained in this study. This provides possibility for by-products, or value added products, recovery thanks to CPH. Afterward, four thermodynamic approaches have been considered for the results modelling. One is based on Standard Freezing Point Depression method. Another one considers the very new Hu-Lee-Sum (HLS) correlation, designed to predict the suppression temperature of clathrate hydrates when an additive is introduced into the system. The two last models are based on van der Waals and Platteeuw model, using either Kihara potential, or a correlation instead (ABOC).All models provide data with a difference lower than 0.7°C compared to experimental results. However, the best method is the ABOC method (activity based occupancy correlation). This approach uses a correlation between the clathrate occupancy, and the water activity. It furnishes equilibrium temperatures within 0.2°C uncertainty.

International audience; This article presents the coupling of a crystallization model of gas hydrate formation to a mechanistic gas-liquid slug flow model. Crystallization of gas hydrates occurs within multiphase flow in oil and gas production operations. Mass transfer (gas absorption and convection up to the growing surface) and heat transfer (since gas hydrate formation is exothermic, thus competitive to the driving force required to hydrates to keep forming) limit crystallization under flow. The model is used to understand these competitive phenomena.

Thème: Impacts environnementaux et revalorisation fonctionnelle des territoires / Topic : Environmental impacts and functional redevelopment of territories; International audience; The steel slags produced and the available stocks are considerable. Managing these co-products requires finding a solution for their future that is satisfactory from both an environmental and economic point of view. The research aims to propose an integrated, sustainable and economically rational solution to this problem.It includes the development of physical and hydrometallurgical processes for the basic recovery of metals and metal oxides and the evaluation of phytostabilisation methodologies, already tested on steel slags, for secondary residues resulting from these treatments. The integrated solution concept will also be based on the control of environmental impacts and/or the study of sustainable eco-compatibility.In addition, HYPASS plans to list and map former slag heaps, carry out “Life-Cycle Analyses” (LCA) for the various recovery methods and build a “Decision-Support Tool” (DST) to facilitate the identification of the best treatment methods, both from an economic and environmental point of view.

Session 4: Slag storage conditioning and leaching; International audience; Steel slags are major by-products of the steel and iron industry. Particularly rich in metallic trace elements, these materials are massively stored in slagheaps and constitute as many potential nuisances for the environment and public health. Several studies [(Mendez et Maier, 2008), (Vamerali et al., 2010)] have shown the effectiveness of phytostabilization processes for rehabilitating sites contaminated by high levels of metals, both because of their sustainable and ecological aspects but also due to their low implementation costs. The slagheap studied in this work contains approximately 500 000 tons of slags spread over an area of about 4 ha. A previous study (Bourchardon et al., 2014) carried out on the same site has demonstrated that the use of "Composted Sewage Sludge" (CSS) as an organic amendment favors the installation of metallophytes herbaceous species naturally able to grow on this type of substrate. In this work we evaluated :1) the combined effects of CSS and inoculation of an AMF (Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi) on vegetation in terms of biomass production as well as accumulation of metallic compounds in leaves and 2) the optimal amount of CSS in order to obtain the best rates of mycorhization.

International audience; Steel slags are major by-products produced by the steel and iron industry. While they are considered as industrial waste, slags represent an important potential economic resource because they often contain significant amounts of valuable "Strategic Metals" (SMs). These metals are essentially used as alloying elements in the steel industry as well as in catalysts and pigments in the chemical industry and as raw material in green technologies (photovoltaic cells, wind turbines and electric motors). During the last decade the global steel production driven by China has doubled and the development of renewable energies (wind and solar) and electrics cars has dramatically increased. This has sharply affected global SMs demand, and there is no doubt today that production and consumption of SMs will must face a major economic pressure in upcoming years. In this context, the importance of hydrometallurgy in production and recycling of SMs cannot be stressed enough. However, improving or even optimizing these processes is clearly required. In addition, although steel slags are classified as non-hazardous thermal waste according to the decree 2002-540 and the United States Environmental Protection Agency, it is well known that most metals they contain are quite toxic to living organisms and may pose serious environmental issues. In France, the "Centre Technique de Promotion des Laitiers sidérurgiques" (CTPL) estimated that the total available stock of slags (including all slag families) was about 17 480 600 tons at the end of 2015. Thus, reusing steel slags appears the option of choice to ensure their sustainable management as well as to decrease their environmental concerns.

International audience; Demonstrating the satisfying cladding oxidation behavior in LOCA conditions and predicting accurately breakaway occurrence is of importance for the cladding producer and its customers. FRAMATOME developed a dedicated facility at his PAIMBOEUF plant in order to perform one- and two-sided oxidation tests in steam, with a tight monitoring (temperature, steam flow). M5Framatome claddings were oxidized at temperatures from 800 to 1100°C for at least 5000 s. Parabolic kinetics, protective oxides and a lack of significant hydrogen pick-up were observed. These tests confirmed the M5Framatome excellent behavior and the absence of breakaway in these conditions. Metallography and SEM observations allowed us to quantify the layers’ thicknesses of the oxide the oxygen-stabilized alpha phases. The metal/oxide interface roughness as well as the oxide porosity were also estimated by image analysis, and are shown to depend on the oxidation temperature. In parallel, Finite Element Modeling of the oxidation and the addition elements’ diffusion was developed. Diffusion equations take into account the evolution of the chemical potentials of the elements, computed thanks to the THERMOCALC software and the FRAMATOME ARTABAZ thermodynamic database. Calculated diffusion profiles are compared to experimental data and discussed.

National audience; Les hydrosystèmes peuvent être assimilés à des boîtes noires qui transforment un signal d’entrée (pluies) en signal de sortie (débits). L’opacité de ces systèmes est un obstacle qui complique les démarches de quantification de la ressource en eau. La connaissance du signal d’entrée et du signal de sortie à l’aide de données peut néanmoins être utilisée pour clarifier les processus internes aux hydrosystèmes. Les techniques d’analyses statistiques permettent ainsi d’identifier les caractères transmissifs ou capacitifs des hydrosystèmes (Mangin 1984). Quant à la modélisation des systèmes dynamiques, elle permet de reconstituer les processus inhérents aux hydrosystèmes et de simuler leur fonctionnement (Fleury 2005). Ces procédés sont donc particulièrement pertinents dans le cas de formations anisotropes, c’est-à-dire dans lesquelles les écoulements semblent erratiques. En l’occurrence, ils ont été appliqués avec succès à deux formations : un massif karstique et une zone humide. La structure karstique en question se situe dans le département du Gard (30), elle correspond au plateau de Méjannes-le-Clap et borde la rivière Cèze. Les analyses statistiques ont permis d’identifier plusieurs sous-systèmes qui présentent un intérêt en termes de ressource hydrique. La zone humide se situe en Isère (38), il s’agit de la tourbière du col du Luitel. Dans ce cas de figure, les données de débits étaient manquantes, il a néanmoins été possible de reconstituer le complexe à l’aide d’un modèle de système dynamique. Ce modèle a par ailleurs permis d’avancer une estimation des débits sortant en situation d’étiage du cours d’eau attenant.

National audience; L’émergence au niveau industriel de la fabrication additive métallique comme procédé à part entière pour la production et le commerce de pièces à haute valeur ajoutée apporte d’un point de vue scientifique des questionnements nouveaux.Différentes technologies ont été développées sur la base de la fabrication additive métallique comme par exemple la fusion sélective au laser (SLM) et la fusion par faisceau d'électrons (EBM). Ces deux procédés sont basés sur la fusion locale des poudres préalablement chauffées à 200°C (SLM) et 600°C (EBM) dans une enceinte contrôlée sous atmosphère inerte. Néanmoins, des traces d’impuretés dans cette atmosphère peuvent être présentes durant la fabrication des pièces.En effet, il a été observé que dans un procédé typique de fabrication additive métallique seule une faible proportion de la poudre est effectivement nécessaire pour la fabrication finale de la pièce : entre 30 et 90 % de la poudre est ainsi mise de côté selon le procédé et la géométrie de la pièce fabriquée. Cependant, cette poudre non utilisée ne conserve pas ses propriétés chimiques et rhéologiques au fil du temps: après un nombre de passages évalué de manière phénoménologique, celle-ci doit être mise au rebut. La réutilisation ou bien le recyclage de cette poudre devient alors un enjeu à la fois économique et écologique pour l’industrie. L’un des verrous de cette problématique se situe sur la réactivité de telles poudres avec leur environnement gazeux.Le titane est utilisé sous forme alliée pour sa résistance et sa légèreté dans des nombreux domaines tels que l’aéronautique, l’aérospatiale, la chimie, le secteur médical. Parmi les alliages du titane, le Ti-6Al-4V représente 50% du marché mondial, et les poudres de Ti-6Al-4V sont couramment utilisées dans les procédés de fabrication additive. En conséquence, il est nécessaire de comprendre l’interaction entre ces poudres et leur environnement gazeux. Malgré les nombreuses études sur la corrosion du Ti-6Al-4V, la majorité de celles-ci portent sur le Ti-6Al-4V massif (Du, 1994). En revanche, peu d’études ont été consacrées à la corrosion de poudres de Ti-6Al-4V et l’effet de la géométrie et des dimensions des grains sur les cinétiques de corrosion (Pijolat, 2018).Dans le but de comprendre et de modéliser la cinétique de corrosion de ces poudres, l’effet des différents paramètres thermodynamiques,i.e. la température et les pressions partielles d’oxygène et d’azote, ainsi que l’effet du temps ont été étudiés. Des expériences en thermobalance en condition isotherme et isobare ont été réalisées dans une gamme de température allant de 600 à 750°C pour des pressions partielles d’oxygène entre 0 et 20 hPa et d’azote entre 0 et 80 hPa. Des caractérisations physico-chimiques des échantillons en cours de corrosion et des produits de corrosion obtenus ont aussi été réalisées. Les résultats ont notamment mis en évidence la formation d’une double couche d’oxyde constituée de TiO2 (couche interne) et de Al2O3 (couche externe) avec une croissance préférentielle du TiO2. De plus, un effet bénéfique de la présence d’azote dans l’atmosphère a été observé.

International audience; The correct prediction of the gas hydrate formation rate is important to estimate pipeline blockage (plugging) in oil and gas production operations. This study presents a revisited model for growth of gas hydrates in water-in-oil emulsions. Literature points out that hydrates form as shells around the water droplets. The water core shrinkage rate (inward growth) is related to gas diffusion through the hydrate shell, while water permeation through the hydrate shell is the limiting phenomenon for outward growth. The models of literature are herein corrected (consideration of gas solubility in the hydrate shell, consideration of gas concentration along the shell coupled with gas consumption in the outer surface, correct coupling between gas absorption by the bulk and gas consumption due to hydrate formation, consideration of the entire particle population for hydrate formation rate, plus minor modeling corrections) and extended for considering the crystal integration process in the outer particle surface and the mass transfer between the particle and the bulk. The model is compared to experimental data and the trend of the gas consumption due to hydrate formation is validated, though model closure is still an open question.

National audience; According to new European driving cycle, while the vehicular emissions of NOx and CO have decreased over the past years, ammonia emissions have considerably increased. Among all NOx reduction approaches that have been developed, selective catalyst reduction (SCR) system using ammonia as a reductant is one the most reliable ways to control the NOx emissions from diesel engine vehicles and trucks. In order to optimize the conversion rates of NOx and to prevent inducing excessive NH3 to the air, an NH3 and NOx sensor is required to control the SCR system. Ivan Romanytsia et al. in 2015 have developed three-electrode mixed-potential selective NO2 sensors. Based on this study, we aim to develop sensors for selective detection of both NOx and NH3 for the exhaust of automotive. In this work, mixed potential gas sensors are fabricated by using two sensing materials of Au and Au-V2O5 as working electrodes, YSZ as electrolyte and platinum as reference and counter electrode. In order to evaluate the performance of the fabricated planar sensors, the response to different pollutant gases such as CO, NH3, NO2 and NO in respective amounts of 100, 20, 100 and 100 ppm are studied in a base gas composed of 12% O2 and 1.5% H2O, balanced with N2. The sensor signal (&#916Vref) is the difference of potential between the reference (Pt) and the working electrode. In order to take into account irreproducibility of the sensors due to fabrication process, all tests are reproduced with two sensors (A and B). Since NO2 is an oxidizing gas, the galvanostatic mode can only produce the electro-chemical reduction of NO2 at working electrode. Figure 1a shows the variations of the potential at 450 °C for different gases by applying a polarization current of 25nA from working to counter electrode. In these conditions, the responses to other interfering gases such as CO and NH3 are removed while there is relatively a good selectivity towards NO2. Concerning ammonia gas sensors, Au-V2O5 working electrodes displayed a high sensitivity to NH3 as well as fast response and recovery times at 600 °C (figure 1b). In order to achieve an integrated NOx and ammonia sensor, which works simultaneously at the same temperature, further investigations are needed.

National audience; Cyclopentane hydrates (CPH) is considered as a candidate for desalination due to its low operating required energy. In order to design such desalination plant, it is crucial to understand both the thermodynamics of crystallization of CPH, as well as the kinetics in the presence of diverse salts. While thermodynamics has been studied prior to this study (Ho-Van et al 2018), the present work focuses on kinetics and morphology of CPH in pure as well as saline water. Different brine solutions of Na2SO4, NaCl, NaCl-MgCl2, or NaCl-KCl-MgCl2 are considered at different concentrations (3.5% and 5% mass fraction) and at different subcoolings (2.5°C, 3.5°C, and 4.3°C). A small horizontal vessel (flat cylinder shaped: inner volume ≈ 1.23 ml, height 4 mm, diameter 19.8 mm) was used under a microscopy without agitation.

In this work, in order to investigate the non-equilibrium behaviors of mixed clathrate hydrates, vapor-liquid-hydrate phase equilibria of mixed gas hydrates from CH4-C2H6-C3H8-nC4H10-CO2-N2 are studied. Two different experimental procedures are used: at quick and slow crystallization rates. The aim is to examine the effects of crystallization rate on the final state. At quick crystallization, hydrate volume increases from 2% to 69% according to the gas mixture. Moreover, storage capacity decreases with increasing rate of crystallization. In addition, a thermodynamic model, based on classical van der Waals and Platteuw method and Kihara potential, has been used. A new set of Kihara parameters for propane, based on slow crystallization, has been obtained successfully and compared to the literature. Besides, a review on guest composition in hydrates from experimental results is suggested, based on open literature. Then, the capability of thermodynamic modeling to simulate these rare data has been investigated. While simulation tools are interesting to predict phase equilibria for light molecules, they become less reliable when phase transition occurs in the system, or when heavier molecules are involved. In addition, the use of RAMAN spectroscopy has illustrated phase transition for CO2/C3H8 mixed hydrates under CO2 rich gas conditions., Dans ce travail, afin d'étudier la formation à l’équilibre et hors équilibre des hydrates mixtes de gaz, deux procédures de formation, rapide et lente, ont été appliqué à des mélanges de CH4-C2H6-C3H8-nC4H10-CO2-N2. L'objectif de ces deux procédures est d'examiner les effets cinétiques de la vitesse de cristallisation sur l'état final, soit dans des conditions dynamiques habituelles (formation rapide) soit en régime permanent (formation lente). Contrairement à la plupart des données de la littérature, qui fournissent uniquement des données de température-pression-composition gaz (PTy), cette étude fournit également la composition, le volume, la capacité de stockage, la densité de la phase hydrate, ou encore le nombre d'hydratation et la conversion d'eau. Les résultats montrent que, lors d'une cristallisation rapide, le volume d'hydrate augmente de 2% à 69% selon le mélange gazeux. De plus, la capacité de stockage diminue avec l'augmentation de la vitesse de cristallisation (Figure 1). En outre, un modèle thermodynamique, basé sur la méthode classique de van der Waals et Platteuw avec le potentiel de Kihara, a été utilisé. Un nouvel ensemble de paramètres Kihara pour le propane, basé sur une cristallisation lente, a été obtenu avec succès et comparé à la littérature. Les données sur la phase hydrates étant rares dans la littérature, ces dernières ont été collectées, et comparé au modèle thermodynamique précédent. Cela permet de mettre en évidence la capacité de la simulation à prédire la composition de la phase hydrate. Bien que ces outils soient intéressants pour prédire les équilibres de phase des molécules légères, ils deviennent moins fiables lorsque des transitions de phase se produisent (coexistence de structures) ou lorsque des molécules plus lourdes sont impliquées. Une analyse par spectroscopie RAMAN a d’ailleurs mis en évidence la coexistence de structures I et II pour un gaz riche en CO2 à partir d’un mélange CO2/C3H8. Pour conclure, la vitesse de cristallisation influence significativement le procédé de formation d’un hydrate mixte. L’utilisation d’un flash thermodynamique, combinant thermodynamique et bilan de masse, montre bien qu’une cristallisation lente est nécessaire pour satisfaire l’équilibre thermodynamique, et donc augmenter la capacité de stockage, et optimiser les procédés hydrate.

National audience; La méthode de simulation numérique SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) est une méthode Lagrangienne largement utilisée dans diverses applications, allant de l’astrophysique à l’hydrodynamique naval [Monaghan, 2005]. L’objectif de ce projet de recherche est de coupler la méthode SPH avec le transfert thermique (conduction et changement de phase), les aspects de surface libre et la tension de surface. Dans ce travail, nous nous concentrons sur les équations SPH de transfert de chaleur, qui constituent la première brique de ce projet. Le principe de la méthode SPH est de modéliser un fluide continu en le discrétisant avec une série de particules ; chacune ayant une entité physique (dans ce cas, cette entité est la température) et la transfère aux particules voisines en passant par une fonction de lissage (Kernel/smoothing function) (Figure1). La nature sans maillage de la méthode SPH lui donne l’avantage d’être potentiellement applicable aux géométries complexes. Par contre la mise en oeuvre des conditions aux limites peut parfois être problématique. Nous présenterons des simulations 1D et 2D de problèmes de conduction et de changement de phase avec des comparaisons avec les solutions analytiques [Carslaw et Jaeger, 1959]. Cette approche pourrait être étendue pour simuler plusieurs processus notamment l’ablation au laser et la fabrication additive [Alshaer et al., 2017].

Steel slags are major by-products (considered as waste) produced by the steel and iron industry. Particularly rich in metallic trace elements, these materials are massively stored in slagheaps and constitute as many potential nuisances for the environment and public health. Several studies [(Mendez et Maier, 2008), (Vamerali et al., 2010)] have shown the effectiveness of phytostabilization processes for rehabilitating sites contaminated by high levels of metals, both because of their sustainable and ecological aspects but also due to their low implementation costs. The SAFIR Industeel slagheap considered contains approximately 500 000 tons of slags spread over an area of about 4 ha. A previous study (Bourchardon et al., 2014) carried out on the same site has demonstrated that the use of "Composted Sewage Sludge" (CSS) as an organic amendment favors the installation of metallophytes herbaceous species able to naturally grow on this type of substrate. Here, have been evaluated: 1) the combined effects of CSS and inoculation of an AMF on vegetation in terms of biomass production as well as accumulation of metallic compounds in aerial parts and 2) the optimal amount of CSS in order to obtain the best rates of mycorhization (symbiosis between the plants and the AMF)., Les laitiers sidérurgiques sont des matières minérales artificielles (classifiées en tant que déchets) produites en grandes quantités par l’industrie du fer et de l’acier : la sidérurgie. Particulièrement riches en éléments traces métalliques, ces matériaux sont massivement stockés au sein de crassiers et constituent autant de nuisances potentielles pour l’environnement et la santé publique. Plusieurs études [(Mendez et Maier, 2008), (Vamerali et al., 2010)] ont mis en évidence l’efficacité de procédés de phytostabilisation pour réhabiliter des sites contaminés par de fortes teneurs en métaux, aussi bien par leurs aspects durables et écologiques que pour leurs faibles coûts de mise en œuvre. Le site SAFIR d’Industeel considéré renferme approximativement 500 000 tonnes de laitiers étalés sur une superficie d’environ 4 ha. Une précédente étude (Bourchardon et al., 2014) réalisée sur ce même crassier a démontré que l’emploi de MIATE en tant qu’amendement organique favorise l’installation d’espèces herbacées métallophytes capables de s’implanter naturellement sur ce type de substrat. Ont été ici évalués: 1) les effets conjoints de l’apport de MIATE et de l’inoculation d’un champignon AMF sur la végétation aussi bien en termes de production de biomasse que d’accumulation en éléments métalliques dans les organes aériens et 2) la quantité optimale de MIATE à apporter en vue d’obtenir les meilleurs taux de mycorhization (symbiose entre les plantes et l’AMF).

The rehabilitation of polluted sites and soils was worth some 200 M€ in 2000, approached 500 M€ in 2010 and reached 560 M€ in 2012 (ADEME, 2013). After a two-year economic slowdown, a market analysis study (Xerfi institute, 2015) projected that the turnover of the companies concerned should grow of considerable form in the future. The regulatory backgrounds (in perpetual evolution) of the cutting back of raw materials (especially, metals) and the land resource (often situated in urban areas) optimization bring real growth opportunities to the sector.

International audience; Incorporés dans des matrices minérales et parfois engagés sous forme de spinelles de type ferrites, les oxydes métalliques non ferreux à base de métaux stratégiques (Mo, Ni, Zn, Pb, Cr, W) des laitiers sidérurgiques "inox" ont rarement fait l’objet de traitements spécifiques. Dans le cas d’une volonté de préservation de la matrice minérale, les traitements comprenant une mise en solution des métaux (spéciation sous forme d’hydroxydes et/ou oxydes) en solution à l’aide d’un agent lixiviant de type acide restent obsolètes, inapplicables et sont clairement à proscrire. Ils présentent l’inconvénient majeur de lessiver la chaux provoquant de ce fait une surconsommation de réactifs et une production importante de sels. Le milieu alcalin est à privilégier. Le principal objectif des manipulations de lixiviation sodique que nous avons opté pour mener à température ambiante est d’étudier brièvement (sans rentrer spécifiquement dans des considérations de rendements optimaux de solubilisation) l’influence que peuvent avoir certains paramètres (rapport solide/liquide, concentration en agent lixiviant) sur le processus de dissolution des oxydes métalliques de la matrice minérale d’étude, issue du crassier de Dorian [Firminy (Loire)]. Cette étude nous a permis d’une part, de vérifier le postulat émis dans la littérature selon lequel la soude (compte tenu de son faible pouvoir de corrosion et de sa sélectivité) présenterait de nombreux avantages (faible solubilisation du fer et du calcium; milieu lixiviant particulièrement bien adapté aux métaux de transition du type Mo, Cr, W, etc.) et, d’autre part, de confirmer l’applicabilité du traitement hydrométallurgique aux laitiers sidérurgiques "inox". La silice SiO2 et la calcite CaCO3 demeurent relativement peu lixiviées (préservation de la matrice minérale). Un intérêt décisif, que nous avons pu constater de développement de procédé hydrométallurgique par voie sodique, est de très peu solubiliser le fer ce qui le rend ainsi aisément éliminable du milieu réactionnel par simple séparation solide/liquide à l’issue de l’étape de lixiviation alcaline. La régénération de la solution lixiviante reste possible par simple addition de chaux au lixiviat permettant la précipitation simultanée des silicates et/ou carbonates susceptibles d’avoir été lixiviés.

International audience; Steel slags are artificial mineral matrices produced by the steel and iron industry. While they are considered as industrial waste, these slag heaps represent an important potential economic resource. The importance of hydrometallurgy in production and recycling of strategic metals cannot be stressed enough. Nevertheless, their use is increasingly under economic pressure since 2014. Clearly, improving or even optimizing these processes is required. In addition, although steel slags are classified as non-hazardous thermal waste, it is well known that most metals they contain are quite toxic to living organisms and pose serious environmental issues. Thus, reusing steel slags appears the option of choice to ensure their sustainable management.

Catalytic and electrocatalytic measurements have been carried out in a solid oxide cell for propylene combustion using continuous Ag catalytic films and Ag nanoparticles dispersed on a mixed ionic electronic conductor film deposited on yttria-stabilized zirconia. Similar EPOC behaviors were observed for both samples, indicating that dispersed Ag nanoparticles in LSCF can be electropromoted in a reversible and non-Faradaic manner under lean-burn conditions. Introduction: Catalytic combustion as a process used for removal of hydrocarbons from automotive gas exhausts or for energy production has been widely implemented on supported PGM (Platinum Group Metals) based catalysts. Since PGMs are very costly and rare, there is a strong need for an equally effective and less expensive catalyst. The electrochemical promotion of catalysis (EPOC), is a promising concept to in-operando boost catalytic processes in a reversible and controlled manner. The aim of this study was to develop Ag-based electrochemical catalysts for low temperature propylene deep oxidation. The magnitude of the electrochemical promotion has been investigated on continuous screen-printed Ag films as well as on Ag nanoparticles dispersed into the porosity of LSFC (La0.8Sr0.2Co0.2Fe0.8O3), a mixed ionic electronic conductor (MIEC). Experimental: Nanostructured electrochemical catalysts were prepared by screen-printing and by wet impregnation method. Catalytic and electrocatalytic tests have been carried out in a specific quartz reactor1 which operated under continuous flowing conditions at atmospheric pressure. The catalytic activity was monitored in a temperature range of 100 to 400 oC under lean-burn conditions, as encountered in Diesel exhausts. The most active Ag films were also evaluated under closed circuit conditions in order to measure the impact of polarization between the silver working electrode and a Au reference electrode. Both electrodes were exposed to the same atmosphere in a single chamber configuration. Results and discussion: Figure 1 shows typical catalytic activity measurements under current application for a Ag/YSZ sample (a) and a Ag/LSCF/YSZ sample (b) under lean-burn conditions, at 300 oC. The OCV propylene conversion is twice on the dispersed Ag nanoparticles despite a two orders of magnitude lower Ag loading. Furthermore, similar EPOC behaviors were observed for both samples, indicating that dispersed Ag nanoparticles in LSCF can be electropromoted in a reversible and non-Faradaic manner. The predominant impact of current applications is to modify the reactivity of oxygen present on the Ag surface. Conclusions: This study reports, for the first time, that the catalytic activity for propylene combustion of Ag coatings and Ag nanoparticles supported on LSCF both deposited onto YSZ can be tailored by current applications in a non-Faradaic manner. This study also demonstrates that EPOC can enhance catalytic properties of Ag nanoparticles dispersed in a MIEC layer for the abatement of propylene in air. International audience; Nous plaidons dans nos travaux pour une identité de nature entre temps et espace, tous deux fils du mouvement. Nous faisons sommairement le point ici sur les lieux des sciences humaines et sociales où une plus profonde accointance entre le temps et l’espace paraît féconde. Plutôt qu’un parcours fastidieux des différentes sciences humaines et sociales, nous suivons ici une démarche, directement liée à notre recherche, consistant à repérer quelles articulations nouvelles entre espace et temps sont permises par notre point de vue, et à les retrouver dans les différentes disciplines. Nous suivons la progression de la pensée et de l’expression, depuis la situation « originelle » où temps et espace sont soudés dans le mouvement, jusqu’à celle où un seul temps et un seul espace, séparés, sont proposés comme bases de référence pour la société. Un certain nombre de sciences humaines et sociales sont évoquées au cours de cette progression : anthropologie, ethnologie, histoire, géographie, mésologie, linguistique, psychologie au sens large, littérature, arts et esthétique … Ce texte se veut une invitation à lire des textes où ces points sont étudiés de plus près.

International audience; The correct prediction of gas hydrate formation is important to estimate pipeline blockage (plugging) in oil and gas production operations. This study presents a revisited model for growth of gas hydrates in water-in-oil emulsion flow. Literature points out that hydrates form as shells around the water droplets. The water core shrinkage rate (inward growth) is related to gas diffusion through the hydrate shell, while water permeation through the hydrate shell is the limiting phenomenon for outward growth. The models of literature are herein corrected (consideration of gas solubility in the hydrate shell, consideration of gas concentration along the shell coupled with gas consumption in the outer surface, coupling between gas absorption by the bulk and gas consumption due to hydrate formation) and extended for considering the crystal integration process in the outer particle surface and the mass transfer between the particle and the bulk. The model is compared to experimental data and the trend of the gas consumption over time due to hydrate formation is validated.

The complexity of the assessment process of variations in contamination levels of soils is in part due to distinct sources, natural or by some anthropic activities. Compare these different substances sources, backgrounds and guiding values is very important to introduce directions and contributions for regulations or environmental protection legislation in general, for heavy metals contents, among other chemical components, and are pointing to more restrictive use of phosphate fertilisers, rich in those pollutant elements, in many countries around the world. Recognize and characterize contaminated soils is a serious concern with issues that whole society have to deal with today and one of the largest and most neglected problems in Brazil. This works intends to obtain an insight in the natural sources and loads of heavy metals, especially cadmium to soils in Brazil, mainly with the application of huge volume of mineral fertilisers, directly linked with their dangerous concentrations. This is a threat to public health in many regions, and it is one of the priorities to protect it from all sources of anomalous concentration in the ground. Decreasing soil quality by means of contamination and pollution by heavy metals is now recognized also as a serious risk for environmental quality and to the health of people., A complexidade do processo de avaliação da variação dos níveis de contaminação do solo é, em parte, devido à imprecisão na caracterização de sua origem distinta, natural ou resultante de atividades antrópicas. O estabelecimento e a comparação de backgrounds e valores de referência do conteúdo destes contaminantes são importantes para nortear e contribuir na regulamentação e jurisprudência de cunho protetivo ambiental em geral. Algumas ações visando o controle de metais pesados, entre outros elementos químicos, apontam para um uso mais restritivo de fertilizantes fosfatados, ricos nestes elementos, em vários países. Reconhecer e caracterizar solos contaminados são uma séria preocupação com problemas que toda sociedade tem de lidar hoje em dia e é um dos maiores e mais negligenciados problemas no Brasil. Neste trabalho pretende-se fazer um balanço de fontes naturais de metais pesados e cargas adicionais destes contaminantes, em especial o Cádmio, em solos brasileiros, principalmente através da aplicação de fertilizantes minerais, aplicados em grande volume e responsáveis pelo significativo incremento de sua concentração. Isto é uma ameaça à saúde pública em várias regiões, e é uma das prioridades na proteção e prevenção de suas fontes de concentração anômala no solo. A degradação da qualidade do solo concernente à contaminação e poluição por metais pesados é, hoje, reconhecido também como um sério risco ambiental e à saúde.

Oral Presentations 2 : Theory & Methods, Kinetics & Catalysis, Fuels & Biofuels, Energetics and Applied Thermal Engineering - ISBN 978-3-940237-50-7; International audience; Thermal decomposition of Cu(OH)2 exhibits specific physico-geometric kinetic characteristics involving the significant induction period (IP) and subsequent sigmoidal mass-loss behaviour under isothermal conditions and the two-step mass-loss process with a long lasting reaction tail under linearly increasing temperature conditions. In addition, the rate behaviours of IP and mass-loss process are largely influenced by the environmental water vapour pressure, p(H20). The IP at a constant temperature is prolonged with increasing p(H20). The mass-loss curves shift systematically to higher temperatures with increasing p(H20). Therefore, the kinetic approach to this complex reaction requires the detailed considerations of the mechanistic features and the impact of p(H20).For the universal kinetic approach to each kinetic process under different p(H20), an accommodation function with respect to p(H20) was derived: cf. file abstract. The accommodation function a(p(H20), Peq(T)) can be introduced into different kinetic equations for describing the IP and mass-loss process. The IP at different temperatures and under different p(H20) analysed kinetically by a single Arrhenius-type plot, providing a statistically significant linearity and the activation energy Ea,IP = 243 ± 13 kJ mol-1. Similarly, a(p(H20), Peq(T)) is introduced into the isoconversional kinetic equation for analyzing universally the mass-loss process under different temperature conditions and p(H20). The isoconversional plots applied to the major mass-loss step of the thermal decomposition of Cu(OH)2 represent straight lines and the average Ea,l = 148 ± 1 kJ mol-l (Fig. 1) (cf. file abstract). Furthermore, the overall thermal decomposition of Cu(OH)2 under isothermal conditions can be described by the IP-surface reaction (SR)-phase boundary controlled reaction (PBR) model. The rate constants of each component reaction step determined under different p(H20) are subjected to the Arrhenius plot by considering a(p(H20), Peq(T)).

L’utilisation de cette technologie dans le domaine de la construction est aujourd’hui d’actualité et se développe rapidement. Cette technologie permet de réduire le temps nécessaire à la construction et de supprimer les coffrages. Elle a créé de nouvelles opportunités pour la recherche sur les matériaux cimentaires. En effet les nouvelles formulations doivent disposer de caractéristiques spécifiques comme la facilité de pompage afin d’être injectées dans le système d’impression 3D, mais doivent être suffisamment stables en sortie de buse pour garder leur forme et présenter une bonne adhésion entre couches successives. L’étude sur l’impression 3D de matériaux cimentaires a commencé depuis des années. Cependant, dans la littérature, il y a peu d’étude sur la rhéologie de ces formulations. La connaissance des paramètres rhéologiques de ces formulations est très importante car ils affectent la mise en oeuvre, la pompabilité ou l’extrudabilité, l’adhésion entre les couches extrudées, … Les méthodes rhéologiques utilisées pour les formulations cimentaires (béton, mortier ou pâte de ciment) sont applicables pour des mélanges à fluidité élevée. Elles ne sont donc pas adaptées à la caractérisation de la rhéologie des formulations denses, cohésives et très visqueuses. Différentes méthodes indirectes permettent d’atteindre les caractéristiques rhéologiques des formulations cimentaires. La relation entre le seuil d’écoulement et des essais de pénétration a été présentée dans l’étude de Lootens et al. et de Khalil et al. Une autre méthode utilisée est le rhéomètre capillaire. Le mortier est également utilisé pour la fabrication des plaques décoratives. Dans ce cas, un motif peut être appliqué à la surface du mortier frais afin de laisser son empreinte. L’aptitude au maintien du motif produit dépend non seulement du moment d’application mais aussi de la composition du mortier, de sa rhéologie...L’objectif de cette étude est de caractériser l’influence de l’ajout d’agent de viscosité et de résine sur la rhéologie via la pénétration d’une aiguille et d’un rhéomètre capillaire. L’aptitude au maintien du motif est caractérisée par mesures de rugosité de la surface.

The results highlight the ability of Calcium Aluminate Cement (CAC) thin coating to inhibit the algal colonization on the duration of the test. SulfoAluminate Cement (SAC) did not affect the biocolonization. Through Avrami’s model, it is shown that CAC strongly inhibits the growth of algae, while the SAC slightly inhibits the growth but strongly promotes the attachment of algal cells.

The application of this model will be in studying how to control the size of water droplets formed on the vitreous substrates like glasses, optical lens and car light shields. in this regard, droplets growth on two kinds of patterned surfaces (pillared and sinusoidal substrates) are studied. Up to know the process of dropwise condensation was mostly studied on flat surfaces or surfaces with coatings that has harmful effects on environments.

National audience; Le terme gypse est employé pour désigner les minéraux principalement constitués de sulfate de calcium dihydraté, CaSO4·2H2O. Ce matériau a une grande importance industrielle puisque sa calcination (ou déshydratation partielle) est le principal procédé de fabrication du plâtre, qui est le produit inorganique avec la plus grande production industrielle au monde. Ce produit est majoritairement constitué de sulfate de calcium hémi-hydraté, CaSO4·0,5H2O. Malgré cette importance et le fait que ces matériaux soient utilisés depuis l’antiquité, le système minéral CaSO4-2H2O reste mal connu. Surtout concernant les teneurs en eau des produits de calcination du gypse. Cette absence d’une compréhension complète des transformations de ce système est due à plusieurs phénomènes qui contribuent à sa complexité. D’abord, celui-ci possède plusieurs polymorphes : lors de la déshydratation du sulfate de calcium dihydraté, différents hydrates du type CaSO4·&#949H2O peuvent être obtenus, où &#949 peut valoir 0,625, 0,5, ou 0 selon les conditions de température T et pression partielle de vapeur d’eau P. De plus, ces composés peuvent aussi présenter des zones de divariance, i.e., des domaines où la teneur globale en eau &#949 peut changer continument selon T et P. La connaissance fine des domaines de stabilité de chaque espèce et des mécanismes réactionnels mis en jeu au cours des transformations thermiques successives du sulfate de calcium dihydraté reste à ce jour sujet à discussion. Les mécanismes de déshydratation et hydratation en voie solide-gaz ne sont que partiellement décrits dans la littérature scientifique. Dans ce contexte, l’un des objectifs de ce travail est donc la connaissance des phases et des transformations impliquées, lors de la déshydratation de poudres de sulfate de calcium dihydraté. De plus, la nature de la divariance pour ce système est également investiguée. Des expériences de thermogravimétrie en conditions isothermes et isobares, selon différents protocoles, ont été réalisées dans une gamme de température allant de 30ºC à 250ºC pour des pressions partielles de vapeur d’eau comprises entre 5 et 60 hPa. Les résultats obtenus permettent l’identification de deux domaines de divariance et d’un domaine de monovariance. Les variations des teneurs en eau par rapport à la stœchiométrie de chaque polymorphe sont interprétées à travers des modèles adaptés à chaque domaine de divariance. Des valeurs de variation d’enthalpie et d’entropie sont ainsi obtenues pour les différentes transformations. Enfin, un diagramme de phase « température-pression de vapeur d’eau » est proposé en se basant sur la stabilité des différentes phases obtenues dans les gammes de température et pression de vapeur d’eau investiguées.

In this study thermal analysis is used in order to identify the reaction scheme of thermal decomposition of an uranium - cerium mixed oxalate into mixed oxide. It was possible to identify the temperature range of the different reactions taken place thanks to temperature ramp experiment. Isothermal experiments at target temperature are then carried out to produce and characterize intermediates (Infrared, SEM microscopy, surface area); in other hand, the thermal analysis was coupled with gas mass spectrometry. This approach allowed a better understanding of reaction scheme compared to literature information., Dans le cadre du recyclage des matières valorisables (actinides U, Pu) issues du combustible nucléaire irradié, la conversion est une étape importante qui intervient à l’interface entre les procédés de séparation/purification et les étapes de (re)fabrication de combustible mixte de type MOx. Cette étape doit donc pouvoir intégrer les flux de purification tout en conduisant à des oxydes ou mélanges d’oxydes adaptés à la mise en forme de combustibles. Ces besoins sont d’autant plus marqués avec le déploiement des réacteurs de 4ème génération et impliquent le développement de nouveaux procédés de conversion pour prendre en compte les problématiques propres à cette rupture technologique (eg. cadence plus élevée, isotopie et teneur Pu, gestion des effluents liquides et gazeux, etc.).Pour répondre à ces besoins futurs, de nouvelles voies de synthèse ont été identifiées par le CEA allant de l’adaptation à court terme de voies existantes déjà éprouvées basées sur la conversion oxalique, à des voies plus innovantes nécessitant une R&D à plus long terme. C’est dans ce cadre, via le projet ANR ASTUTE, que la voie par co-conversion oxalique est investiguée. L’oxalate mixte obtenu par précipitation subit un traitement thermique de manière à obtenir l’oxyde mixte. Ce traitement thermique est alors une étape clé puisqu’il permet de contrôler la plupart des caractéristiques morphologiques, texturales et chimiques finales de l’oxyde, caractéristiques qui conditionnent la mise en forme du combustible. Lors de cette conversion thermique, une série de transformations ont lieu avant l’obtention de l’oxyde final. De manière à prédire et donc à maitriser les caractéristiques de ce solide, une connaissance fine du schéma réactionnel lors du traitement thermique est nécessaire. L’utilisation de la thermogravimétrie en rampe de température et en palier isotherme dans le cas d’un oxalate mixte uranium-cérium a permis d’isoler des intermédiaires réactionnels lors de la conversion de l’oxalate en oxyde. Ces intermédiaires ont été caractérisés d’un point de vue chimique (spectroscopie IRTF), morphologique (MEB) et texturale (surface spécifique et volume poreux).

National audience; A promising low CO2 alternative to Portland cement is sulfoaluminate cement (CSA) containing mainly ye’elimite (C4A3$), belite (C2S) and ferrite (C4AF). Hydration kinetics of these cements is controlled by the amount of calcium sulfate they contain. The main hydration phase of CSA cements is ettringite. Its formation has consequences on the workability. Polycarboxylate based superplasticizers (PCE) can be used for fluidity improvement, while citric acid can be used for hydration delay.The aim of this work is to provide a better understanding of the hydration process as well as workability properties, at early ages, of CSA cements containing polycarboxylate-based superplasticizers and citric acid. Citric acid and three polycarboxylate superplasticizers with various side chains density and lengths were studied. On one hand, different type of PCE used shows a significant increase in the initial workability of the pastes. However, a remarkable loss of workability occurs during the first 30 minutes. Besides, the structure of these superplasticizers plays an important role on fluidizing efficiency. On the other hand, citric acid acts mainly on hydration delay. Yield stress of cement paste was measured using both rheometry tests and mini-cone tests, it could be found that the combination of PCE superplasticizer with citric acid helps maintaining a significant yield stress over time to the cement paste compared to PCE alone.

Due to legislation, in these areas activities which alter the natural environment are not permitted. Here we suggest and describe a methodology that can be used in all low to middlegrade contaminated areas without the necessity of structure changes, intense human interference and/or supervision.

National audience; A l'heure actuelle, les solutions les plus souvent proposées par les acteurs de la dépollution des sols sont la mise en décharge ou le confinement in situ à l'aide de membranes géosynthétiques couvertes de terre propre. Si ces méthodes sont efficaces et rapides, leur mise en œuvre reste couteuse et leur pertinence écologique est discutable. Une alternative simple consiste à implanter un couvert végétal homogène et pérenne afin de limiter les transferts des contaminants. Cette approche de phytostabilisation est toutefois rarement considérée, faute de retours d'expériences suffisamment nombreux et documentés. Ce travail propose un premier retour d'expérience sur la phytostabilisation d'un crassier métallurgique ; il évalue l'effet d'un couvert végétal sur les 3 voies potentielles de transfert des contaminants : les transferts éoliens, la lixiviation et la bioaccumulation par les plantes.

International audience; The difficulty on quality assessment of soils arises is in part due to distinguish pollutant sources, natural or anthropogenic. Compare this different sources backgrounds and guiding values is very important to instruction on regulations and legislation in general, for heavy metals contents, among other chemical components, and are pointing to more restrictive use of cadmium - rich phosphate fertilisers in many countries. Recognize and characterize contaminated soils is a serious concern with issues that whole society have to deal with today and one of the largest and most neglected problems in Brazil. This work intends to obtain an insight in the natural sources and loads of heavy metals, especially cadmium to soils in Brazil, mainly with the application of huge volume of mineral fertilisers, directly linked with their dangerous concentrations. This is a threat to public health in many regions, and it is one of the priorities to protect it from all sources of anomalous concentration in the ground. Decreasing soil quality by means of contamination and pollution by heavy metals is now recognized also as a serious risk for environmental quality and to the health of people.
