The dynamic properties of molecular clouds are set by the interplay of their self-gravity, turbulence, external pressure and magnetic fields. Extended surveys of Galactic molecular clouds typically find that their kinetic energy ($E_{\rm k}$) counterbalances their self-gravitational energy ($E_{\rm g}$), setting their virial parameter $\alpha_{\rm vir}=2E_{\rm k}/|E_{\rm g}|\approx1$. However, past studies either have been biased by the use of optically-thick lines or have been limited within the solar neighborhood and the inner Galaxy (Galactocentric radius $R_{\rm gc}

Context. Carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen are the most abundant elements throughout the universe, after hydrogen and helium. Studying these elements in low-metallicity stars can provide crucial information on the chemical composition in the early Galaxy and possible internal mixing processes that can alter the surface composition of the stars. Aims. This work aims to investigate the chemical abundance patterns for CNO elements and Li in a homogeneously analyzed sample of 52 metal-poor halo giant stars. Methods. We used high-resolution spectra with a high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) to carry out a spectral synthesis to derive detailed C, N, O, and Li abundances for a sample of stars with metallicities in the range of -3.58 <= [Fe/H] <= -1.79 dex. Our study was based on the assumption of one-dimensional (1D) local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) atmospheres. Results. Based on carbon and nitrogen abundances, we investigated the deep mixing taking place within stars along the red giant branch (RGB). The individual abundances of carbon decrease towards the upper RGB while nitrogen shows an increasing trend, indicating that carbon has been converted into nitrogen. No signatures of ON-cycle processed material were found for the stars in our sample. We computed a set of galactic chemical evolution (GCE) models, implementing different sets of massive star yields, both with and without including the effects of stellar rotation on nucleosynthesis. We confirm that stellar rotation is necessary to explain the highest [N/Fe] and [N/O] ratios observed in unmixed halo stars. The predicted level of N enhancement varies sensibly in dependence of the specific set of yields that are adopted. For stars with stellar parameters similar to those of our sample, heavy elements such as Sr, Y, and Zr appear to have unchanged abundances despite the stellar evolution mixing processes., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures. Open clusters are ideal tools for tracing the abundances of different elements because their stars are expected to have the same age, distance, and metallicity. Therefore, they serve as very powerful tracers for investigating the cosmic origins of elements. This paper expands on a recent study by us, where the element Fluorine was studied in seven previously open clusters, adding six open clusters as well as eight field stars. The primary objective is to determine the abundance of fluorine (F) to gain insight into its production and evolution. The magnesium (Mg) abundances were derived to categorize the field stars into high and low alpha disk populations. Additionally, cerium (Ce) abundances are determined to better understand the interplay between F and s-process elements. The spectra were obtained from the high-resolution near-infra-red GIANO-B instrument at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG). For the derivation of the stellar parameters and abundances, the Python version of Spectroscopy Made Easy (PySME) was used. OH, CN, and CO molecular lines and band heads along with Fe I lines were used to determine the stellar parameters in the H-band region. Two HF lines in the K-band ({\lambda}{\lambda} 2.28, 2.33 {\mu}m), three K-band Mg I lines ({\lambda}{\lambda} 2.10, 2.11, 2.15 {\mu}m), and two Ce II lines in the H-band ({\lambda}{\lambda} 1.66, and 1.71 {\mu}m) were used to derive the abundances of F, Mg, and Ce, respectively. F, Mg, and Ce abundances were derived for 14 stars from 6 OCs, as well as 8 field stars. The F and Ce abundances were investigated as a function of metallicity, age, and Galactocentric distances. Our results indicate that asymptotic giant branch stars and massive stars, including a subset of fast rotators (whose rotation speed likely increases as metallicity decreases), are necessary to explain the cosmic origin of F., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics(A&A)

Context. The recent detection of nitrogen-enhanced, metal-poor galaxies at high redshift by the James Webb Space Telescope has sparked renewed interest in exploring the chemical evolution of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen (the CNO elements) at early times, prompting fresh inquiries into their origins. Aims. The main goal of this paper is to shed light onto the early evolution of the main CNO isotopes in our Galaxy and in young distant systems, such as GN-z11 at z=10.6. Methods. To this aim, we incorporate a stochastic star-formation component into a chemical evolution model calibrated with high-quality Milky Way (MW) data, focusing on the contribution of Population III (Pop III) stars to the early chemical enrichment. Results. By comparing the model predictions with CNO abundance measurements from high-resolution spectroscopy of an homogeneous sample of Galactic halo stars, we first demonstrate that the scatter observed in the metallicity range -4.5 < [Fe/H] <-1.5 can be explained by pre-enrichment from Pop III stars that explode as supernovae (SNe) with different initial masses and energies. Then, by exploiting the chemical evolution model, we provide testable predictions for log(C/N), log(N/O), and log(C/O) vs. log(O/H)+12 in MW-like galaxies observed at different cosmic epochs/redshifts. Finally, by calibrating the chemical evolution model to replicate the observed properties of GN-z11, we provide an alternative interpretation of its log(N/O) abundance ratio, demonstrating that its high N content can be reproduced through enrichment from high-mass faint Pop III SNe. Conclusions. Stochastic chemical enrichment from primordial stars explains both the observed scatter in CNO abundances in MW halo stars and the exceptionally high N/O ratios in some distant galaxies. These findings emphasize the critical role of Pop III stars in shaping early chemical evolution.

The Wide-field Spectroscopic Telescope (WST) is proposed as a new facility dedicated to the efficient delivery of spectroscopic surveys. This white paper summarises the initial concept as well as the corresponding science cases. WST will feature simultaneous operation of a large field-of-view (3 sq. degree), a high multiplex (20,000) multi-object spectrograph (MOS) and a giant 3x3 sq. arcmin integral field spectrograph (IFS). In scientific capability these requirements place WST far ahead of existing and planned facilities. Given the current investment in deep imaging surveys and noting the diagnostic power of spectroscopy, WST will fill a crucial gap in astronomical capability and work synergistically with future ground and space-based facilities. This white paper shows that WST can address outstanding scientific questions in the areas of cosmology; galaxy assembly, evolution, and enrichment, including our own Milky Way; origin of stars and planets; time domain and multi-messenger astrophysics. WST's uniquely rich dataset will deliver unforeseen discoveries in many of these areas. The age, evolution, and chemical properties of the Galactic disk can be effectively ascertained using open clusters. Within the large program Stellar Populations Astrophysics at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, we specifically focused on stars in open clusters, to investigate various astrophysical topics, from the chemical content of very young systems to the abundance patterns of lesser studied intermediate-age and old open clusters. We investigate the astrophysically interesting element fluorine (F), which has an uncertain and intriguing cosmic origin. We also determine the abundance of cerium (Ce), as F abundance is expected to correlate with the s-process elements. High-resolution near-infrared spectra were obtained using the GIANO-B spectrograph. The Python version of Spectroscopy Made Easy (PySME), was used to derive atmospheric parameters and abundances. The stellar parameters were determined using OH, CN, and CO molecular lines along with Fe I lines. This paper presents the first F Galactic radial abundance gradient. Our results are also compared with literature estimates and with Galactic chemical evolution models that have been generated using different F production channels. Our results indicate a constant, solar pattern in the [F/Fe] ratios across clusters of different ages, supporting the latest findings that fluorine levels do not exhibit any secondary behavior for stars with solar or above-solar metallicity. By comparing our sample stars with the predictions of Galactic chemical evolution models, we came to the conclusion that both asymptotic giant branch stars and massive stars, including a fraction of fast rotators that increase with decreasing metallicity, are needed to explain the cosmic origin of F., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables, Accepted by A&A

The High-Resolution Multi-Object Spectrograph (HRMOS) is a facility instrument that we plan to propose for the Very Large Telescope (VLT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), following the initial presentation at the VLT 2030 workshop held at ESO in June 2019. HRMOS provides a combination of capabilities that are essential to carry out breakthrough science across a broad range of active research areas from stellar astrophysics and exoplanet studies to Galactic and Local Group archaeology. HRMOS fills a gap in capabilities amongst the landscape of future instrumentation planned for the next decade. The key characteristics of HRMOS will be high spectral resolution (R = 60000 - 80000) combined with multi-object (20-100) capabilities and long term stability that will provide excellent radial velocity precision and accuracy (10m/s). Initial designs predict that a SNR~100 will be achievable in about one hour for a star with mag(AB) = 15, while with the same exposure time a SNR~ 30 will be reached for a star with mag(AB) = 17. The combination of high resolution and multiplexing with wavelength coverage extending to relatively blue wavelengths (down to 380\,nm), makes HRMOS a spectrograph that will push the boundaries of our knowledge and that is envisioned as a workhorse instrument in the future. The variations of elemental abundance and their ratios along the Galactocentric radius result from the chemical evolution of the Milky Way disks. The $\rm ^{12}C/^{13}C$ ratio in particular is often used as a proxy to determine other isotopic ratios, such as $\rm ^{16}O/^{18}O$ and $\rm ^{14}N/^{15}N$. Measurements of $\rm ^{12}CN$ and $\rm ^{13}CN$ (or $\rm C^{15}N$) -- with their optical depths corrected via their hyper-fine structure lines -- have traditionally been exploited to constrain the Galactocentric gradients of the CNO isotopic ratios. Such methods typically make several simplifying assumptions (e.g. a filling factor of unity, the Rayleigh-Jeans approximation, and the neglect of the cosmic microwave background) while adopting a single average gas phase. However, these simplifications introduce significant biases to the measured $\rm ^{12}C/^{13}C$ and $\rm ^{14}N/^{15}N$. We demonstrate that exploiting the optically thin satellite lines of $\rm ^{12}CN$ constitutes a more reliable new method to derive $\rm ^{12}C/^{13}C$ and $\rm ^{14}N/^{15}N$ from CN isotopologues. We apply this satellite-line method to new IRAM 30-m observations of $\rm ^{12}CN$, $\rm ^{13}CN$, and $\rm C^{15}N$ $N=1\to0$ towards 15 metal-poor molecular clouds in the Galactic outer disk ($R_{\rm gc} > $ 12 kpc), supplemented by data from the literature. After updating their Galactocentric distances, we find that $\rm ^{12}C/^{13}C$ and $\rm ^{14}N/^{15}N$ gradients are in good agreement with those derived using independent optically thin molecular tracers, even in regions with the lowest metallicities. Terzan 5 is a heavily obscured stellar system located in the inner Galaxy. It has been postulated to be a stellar relic, a Bulge Fossil Fragment witnessing the complex history of the assembly of the Milky Way bulge. In this paper, we follow the chemical enrichment of a set of putative progenitors of Terzan 5 to assess whether the chemical properties of this cluster fit within a formation scenario in which it is the remnant of a primordial building block of the bulge. We can explain the metallicity distribution function and the runs of different element-to-iron abundance ratios as functions of [Fe/H] derived from optical-infrared spectroscopy of giant stars in Terzan 5, by assuming that the cluster experienced two major star formation bursts separated by a long quiescent phase. We further predict that the most metal-rich stars in Terzan 5 are moderately He-enhanced and a large spread of He abundances in the cluster, Y = 0.26-0.335. We conclude that current observations fit within a formation scenario in which Terzan 5 originated from a pristine, or slightly metal-enriched, gas clump about one order of magnitude more massive than its present-day mass. Losses of gas and stars played a major role in shaping Terzan 5 the way we see it now. The iron content of the youngest stellar population is better explained if the white dwarfs that give rise to type Ia supernovae (the main Fe factories) sink towards the cluster center, rather than being stripped by the strong tidal forces exerted by the Milky Way in the outer regions., Comment: 14 pages, 2 tables, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We study the abundance patterns and the radial gradients of s-process elements (Y, Zr, Ba, La and Ce), r-process elements (Eu) and mixed-process elements (Mo, Nd and Pr) in the Galactic thin disc by means of a detailed two-infall chemical evolution model for the Milky Way with state-of-the-art nucleosynthesis prescriptions. We consider r-process nucleosynthesis from merging neutron stars (MNS), magneto-rotational supernovae (MR-SNe) and s-process synthesis from low- and intermediate- mass stars (LIMS) and rotating massive stars. The predictions of our model are compared with data from the sixth data release of the Gaia-ESO survey, from which we consider 62 open clusters with age > 0.1 Gyr and 1300 Milky Way disc field stars. We conclude that: i) the [Eu/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] is reproduced by both a prompt and a delayed source, but the quick source completely dominates the Eu production; ii) rotation in massive stars contribute substantially to the s-process elements of the first peak, but MNS and MR-SNe are necessary in order to reproduce the observations; iii) due to the adopted yields, our model overpredicts Pr and underpredicts Nd, while the [Mo/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] is nicely reproduced. For the radial gradients, we conclude that: i) our predicted slope of the [Fe/H] gradient is in agreement with the one observed in open clusters by Gaia-ESO and other high-resolution spectroscopic surveys. ii) The predicted slope of the [Eu/H] radial gradient is steeper than the observed one, independently on how quick the production of Eu is. We discuss the possible causes of this discrepancy in terms of both different Galaxy formation scenarios and stellar radial migration effects. iii) For all the elements belonging to the second s-process peak (Ba, La, Ce) as well as for Pr, we predict a plateau at low Galactocentric distances, which is probably due to the enhanced enrichment from LIMS in the inner regions., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures. The $^{18}$O$/^{17}$O abundance ratio is, in principle, a powerful tool to estimate the relative contributions of massive stars and low- to intermediate-mass stars to the chemical enrichment of galaxies. We present $^{18}$O$/^{17}$O ratios derived from simultaneous observations of C$^{18}$O and C$^{17}$O 1-0 toward fifty-one massive star forming regions with the Institut de Radioastronomie Millim\'etrique (IRAM) 30 meter telescope. Simultaneous observations of HC$^{18}$O$^{+}$ 1-0 and HC$^{17}$O$^{+}$ 1-0 with the Yebes 40m telescope toward five sources from this sample were also done to test the consistency of $^{18}$O$/^{17}$O ratios derived from different isotopic pairs. From our improved measurements, resulting in smaller errors than previous work in the literature, we obtain a clear trend of increasing $^{18}$O$/^{17}$O ratio with increasing galactocentric distance (D$_{GC}$), which provides a significant constraint on Galactic chemical evolution (GCE) models. We present metallicity and radial velocity for 450 bonafide members of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal (Sgr dSph) galaxy, measured from high resolution (R~18000) FLAMES@VLT spectra. The targets were carefully selected (a) to sample the core of the main body of Sgr dSph while avoiding contamination from the central stellar nucleus, and (b) to prevent any bias on the metallicity distribution, by selecting targets based on their Gaia parallax and proper motions. All the targets selected in this way were confirmed as radial velocity members. We used this sample to derive the first metallicity distribution of the core of the Sgr dSph virtually unaffected by metallicity biases. The observed distribution ranges from [Fe/H]~ -2.3 to [Fe/H]~ 0.0, with a strong, symmetric and relatively narrow peak around [Fe/H]~ -0.5 and a weak, extended metal-poor tail, with only 13.8 +/- 1.9% of the stars having [Fe/H]< -1.0. We confirm previous evidence of correlations between chemical and kinematical properties of stars in the core of Sgr. In our sample stars with [Fe/H]>= -0.6 display a lower velocity dispersion and a higher rotation amplitude than those with [Fe/H]< -0.6, confirming previous suggestions of a disk/halo structure for the progenitor of the system., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, accepted by A&A

After hydrogen and helium, oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen - hereinafter, the CNO elements - are the most abundant species in the universe. They are observed in all kinds of astrophysical environments, from the smallest to the largest scales, and are at the basis of all known forms of life, hence, the constituents of any biomarker. As such, their study proves crucial in several areas of contemporary astrophysics, extending to astrobiology. In this review, I will summarize current knowledge about CNO element evolution in galaxies, starting from our home, the Milky Way. After a brief recap of CNO synthesis in stars, I will present the comparison between chemical evolution model predictions and observations of CNO isotopic abundances and abundance ratios in stars and in gaseous matter. Such a comparison permits to constrain the modes and time scales of the assembly of galaxies and their stellar populations, as well as stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis theories. I will stress that chemical evolution models must be carefully calibrated against the wealth of abundance data available for the Milky Way before they can be applied to the interpretation of observational datasets for other systems. In this vein, I will also discuss the usefulness of some key CNO isotopic ratios as probes of the prevailing, galaxy-wide stellar initial mass function in galaxies where more direct estimates from starlight are unfeasible., Comment: 83 pages, 19 figures. Chemical tagging is a powerful tool to reveal the origin of stars and globular clusters (GCs), especially when dynamics alone cannot provide robust answers. So far, mostly $\alpha$- and neutron capture elements have been used to distinguish stars born in the Milky Way (MW) from those born in external environments such as that of dwarf galaxies. Here, instead, we use iron-peak elements abundances to investigate the origin of a sample of metal-rich globular clusters. By homogeneously analyzing high-resolution UVES spectra of giant stars belonging to four metal-rich GCs (namely NGC 5927, NGC 6388, NGC 6441, NGC 6496), we find that while the $\alpha$-elements Si and Ca have similar abundance ratios for all the four GCs, and Ti and neutron capture elements (La, Ba and Eu) only show a marginal discrepancy, a stark difference is found when considering the abundances of some iron-peak elements (Sc, V and Zn). In particular, NGC 6388 and NGC 6441 have abundance ratios for these iron-peak elements significantly lower (by ~ 0.5 dex) than those measured in NGC 5927 and NGC 6496, which are clearly identified as born in-situ MW clusters through an analysis of their orbital properties. These measurements indicate that the environment in which these clusters formed is different, and provide robust evidence supporting an accreted origin from the same progenitor for NGC 6388 and NGC 6441., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We study the evolution of nitrogen in the Galactic halo, thick disc, thin disc and bulge by comparing detailed chemical evolution models with recent observations. The models used in this work have already been constrained to explain the abundance patterns of $\alpha$-elements and the metallicity distribution functions of halo, disc and bulge stars; here, we adopt them to investigate the origin and evolution of N in the different Galactic components. First, we consider different sets of yields and study the importance of the various channels proposed for N production. Secondly, we apply the reference models to study the evolution of both the Galactic discs and bulge. We conclude that: i) primary N produced by rotating massive stars is required to reproduce the plateau in log(N/O) and [N/Fe] ratios at low metallicity, as well as the secondary and primary production from low- and intermediate-mass stars to reproduce the data of the thin disc. ii) The parallel model can provide a good explanation of the evolution of N abundance in the thick and thin discs; we confirm that the thick disc has evolved much faster than the thin disc, in agreement with the results from the abundance patterns of other chemical elements. iii) Finally, we present new model predictions for N evolution in the Galactic bulge, and we show that the observations in bulge stars can be explained if massive stars rotate fast during the earliest phases of Galactic evolution, in agreement with findings from the abundance pattern of carbon., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. We study the evolution of Eu and Ba abundances in local group dwarf spheroidal and ultra faint dwarf galaxies by means of detailed chemical evolution models and compare our results with new sets of homogeneous abundances. The adopted models include gas infall and outflow and have been previously tested. We investigate several production scenarios for r-process elements: merging neutron stars and magneto-rotational driven supernovae. Production of Ba through the main s-process acting in low- and intermediate- mass stars is considered as well. We also test different sets of nucleosynthesis yields. For merging neutron stars we adopt either a constant and short delay time for merging or a delay time distribution function. Our simulations show that: i) if r-process elements are produced only by a quick source, it is possible to reproduce the [Eu/Fe] vs [Fe/H], but those models fail in reproducing the [Ba/Fe] vs [Fe/H]. ii) If r-process elements are produced only with longer delays the opposite happens. iii) If both a quick source and a delayed one are adopted, such as magneto-rotational driven supernovae and merging neutron stars with a delay time distribution, the [Eu/Fe] abundance pattern is successfully reproduced, but models still fail in reproducing the [Ba/Fe]. iv) On the other hand, the characteristic abundances of Reticulum II can be reproduced only if both the Eu and the r-process fraction of Ba are produced on short and constant time delays during a single merging event. We discuss also other possible interpretations, including an inhomogeneous mixing of gas which might characterize this galaxy.

The cosmological {7Li problem consists in explaining why the primordial Li abundance, as predicted by the standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis theory with constraints from WMAP and Planck, is a factor of 3 larger than the Li abundance measured in the stars of the Spite plateau defined by old, warm dwarf stars of the Milky Way halo. Several explanations have been proposed to explain this difference, including various Li depletion processes as well as non standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis, but the main question remains unanswered. In this paper, we present detailed chemical evolution models for dwarf spheroidal and ultra faint galaxies, compute the galactic evolution of 7Li abundance in these objects and compare it with observations of similar objects. In our models, Li is mainly produced by novae and cosmic rays and to a minor extent by low and intermediate mass stars. We adopt the yield combination which best fits the Li abundances in the Milky Way stars. It is evident that the observations of dwarf objects define a Spite plateau, identical to that observed in the Milky Way, thus suggesting that the Spite plateau could be a universal feature and its meaning should be discussed. The predictions of our models for dwarf galaxies, are obtained by assuming as Li primordial abundance either the one detected in the atmospheres of the oldest halo stars (Spite plateau; A(Li)=2.2 dex), or the one from cosmological observations (WMAP; A(Li)=2.66 dex). We analyze the oxygen abundances of a stellar sample representative of the two major Galactic populations: the thin and thick disks. The aim is to investigate the differences between members of the Galactic disks and to contribute to the understanding on the origin of oxygen chemical enrichment in the Galaxy. The analysis is based on the [O\,{\sc i}]=6300.30\,\AA~ oxygen line in HR spectra ($R\sim$52,500) obtained from the GES Survey. By comparing the observed spectra with a theoretical dataset, computed in LTE with the SPECTRUM synthesis and ATLAS12 codes, we derive the oxygen abundances of 516 FGK dwarfs for which we have previously measured carbon abundances. Based on kinematic, chemical and dynamical considerations we identify 20 thin and 365 thick disk members. We study potential trends of both subsamples in terms of their chemistry ([O/H], [O/Fe], [O/Mg], and [C/O] versus [Fe/H] and [Mg/H]), age, and position in the Galaxy. We investigate the evolution of the abundance of fluorine in the Milky Way thick and thin discs by means of detailed chemical evolution models compared with recent observational data. The chemical evolution models adopted here have already been shown to fit the observed abundance patterns of CNO and $\alpha$-elements as well as the metallicity distribution functions for the Galactic thick and thin disc stars. We apply them here to the study of the origin and evolution of fluorine, which is still a matter of debate. First, we study the importance of the various sites proposed for the production of fluorine. Then, we apply the reference models to follow the evolution of the two different Galactic components. We conclude that rotating massive stars are important producers of F and they can set a plateau in F abundance below [Fe/H]=-0.5 dex, though its existence for [Fe/H]<-1 has yet to be confimed by extensive observations of halo stars. In order to reproduce the F abundance increase in the discs at late times, instead, a contribution from lower mass stars - single asymptotic giant branch stars and/or novae - is required. The dichotomy between the thick and thin discs is more evident in the [F/O] vs. [O/H] plot than in the [F/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] one, and we confirm that the thick disc has evolved much faster than the thin disc, in agreement with findings from the abundance patterns of other chemical elements., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures. Context: Stars evolving through the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase provide significant feedback to their host system, in form of both gas enriched in nuclear-burning products and dust formed in their winds, which they eject into the interstellar medium. Therefore AGB stars are an essential ingredient for the chemical evolution of the Milky Way and other galaxies. Aims: We study AGB models with super-solar metallicity, to complete our large database, so far extending from metal-poor to solar chemical compositions. We provide chemical yields for masses in the range 1-8 Msun and metallicities Z=0.03 and Z=0.04. We also study dust production in this metallicity domain. Methods: We calculated the evolutionary sequences from the pre main sequence through the whole AGB phase. We follow the variation of the surface chemical composition to calculate the chemical yields of the various species and model dust formation in the winds to determine the dust production rate and the total dust mass produced by each star during the AGB phase. Results: The physical and chemical evolution of the star is sensitive to the initial mass: M> 3Msun stars experience hot bottom burning, whereas the surface chemistry of the lower mass counterparts is altered only by third dredge-up. The carbon-star phase is reached by 2.5-3.5Msun stars of metallicity Z=0.03, whereas all the Z=0.04 stars (except the 2.5 Msun) remain O-rich for the whole AGB phase. Most of the dust produced by metal-rich AGBs is in the form of silicates particles. The trends of chemical abundances and abundance ratios observed in stars of different ages, kinematics, and metallicities bear the imprints of several physical processes that concur to shape the host galaxy properties. By inspecting these trends, we get precious information on stellar nucleosynthesis, the stellar mass spectrum, the timescale of structure formation, the efficiency of star formation, as well as any inward or outward flows of gas. In this paper, we analyse recent determinations of carbon-to-iron and carbon-to-oxygen abundance ratios in different environments (the Milky Way and elliptical galaxies) using our latest chemical evolution models that implement up-to-date stellar yields and rely on the tight constraints provided by asteroseismic stellar ages (whenever available). A scenario where most carbon is produced by rotating massive stars, with yields largely dependent on the metallicity of the parent proto-star clouds, allows us to fit simultaneously the high-quality data available for the local Galactic components (thick and thin discs) and for microlensed dwarf stars in the Galactic bulge, as well as the abundance ratios inferred for massive elliptical galaxies. This paper focuses on carbon that is one of the most abundant elements in the Universe and is of high importance in the field of nucleosynthesis and galactic and stellar evolution. Even nowadays, the origin of carbon and the relative importance of massive and low- to intermediate-mass stars in producing it is still a matter of debate. In this paper we aim at better understanding the origin of carbon by studying the trends of [C/H], [C/Fe],and [C/Mg] versus [Fe/H], and [Mg/H] for 2133 FGK dwarf stars from the fifth Gaia-ESO Survey internal data release (GES iDR5). The availability of accurate parallaxes and proper motions from Gaia DR2 and radial velocities from GES iDR5 allows us to compute Galactic velocities, orbits and absolute magnitudes and, for 1751 stars, ages via a Bayesian approach. Three different selection methodologies have been adopted to discriminate between thin and thick disk stars. In all the cases, the two stellar groups show different abundance ratios, [C/H], [C/Fe], and [C/Mg], and span different age intervals, with the thick disk stars being, on average, older than those in the thin disk. The behaviours of [C/H], [C/Fe], and [C/Mg] versus [Fe/H], [Mg/H], and age all suggest that C is primarily produced in massive stars like Mg. The increase of [C/Mg] for young thin disk stars indicates a contribution from low-mass stars or the increased C production from massive stars at high metallicities due to the enhanced mass loss. The analysis of the orbital parameters Rmed and |Zmax| support an "inside-out" and "upside-down" formation scenario for the disks of Milky Way., Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures

The faintest Local Group galaxies found lurking in and around the Milky Way halo provide a unique test bed for theories of structure formation and evolution on small scales. Deep Subaru and Hubble Space Telescope photometry demonstrates that their stellar populations are old, and that the star formation activity did not last longer than 2 Gyr in these systems. A few mechanisms that may lead to such a rapid quenching have been investigated by means of hydrodynamic simulations, without providing any final assessment so far. This is the first in a series of papers aimed at analysing the roles of stellar feedback, ram pressure stripping, host-satellite tidal interactions and reionization in cleaning the lowest-mass Milky Way companions of their cold gas, by using high-resolution, three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations. We simulate an isolated ultrafaint dwarf galaxy loosely modeled after Bootes I, and examine whether or not stellar feedback alone could drive a substantial fraction of the ambient gas out from the shallow potential well. In contrast to simple analytical estimates, but in agreement with previous hydrodynamical studies, we find that most of the cold gas reservoir is retained. Conversely, a significant fraction of the metal-enriched stellar ejecta crosses the boundaries of the computational box with velocities exceeding the local escape velocity and is, thus, likely lost from the system. Although the total energy output from multiple supernova explosions exceeds the binding energy of the gas, no galactic-scale outflow develops in our simulations and as such, most of the ambient medium remains trapped within the weak potential well of the model galaxy. It seems thus unavoidable that, in order to explain the dearth of gas in ultrafaint dwarf galaxies, we will have to resort to environmental effects. Chemical abundances and abundance ratios measured in galaxies provide precious information about the mechanisms, modes and time scales of the assembly of cosmic structures. Yet, the nucleogenesis and chemical evolution of elements heavier than helium are dictated mostly by the physics of the stars and the shape of the stellar mass spectrum. In particular, estimates of CNO isotopic abundances in the hot, dusty media of high-redshift starburst galaxies offer a unique glimpse into the shape of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) in extreme environments that can not be accessed with direct observations (star counts). Underlying uncertainties in stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis theory, however, may hurt our chances of getting a firm grasp of the IMF in these galaxies. In this work, we adopt new yields for massive stars, covering different initial rotational velocities. First, we implement the new yield set in a well-tested chemical evolution model for the Milky Way. The calibrated model is then adapted to the specific case of a prototype submillimeter galaxy (SMG). We show that, if the formation of fast-rotating stars is favoured in the turbulent medium of violently star-forming galaxies irrespective of metallicity, the IMF needs to be skewed towards high-mass stars in order to explain the CNO isotope ratios observed in SMGs. In this work, we study the Galactic evolution of lithium by means of chemical evolution models in the light of the most recent spectroscopic data from Galactic stellar surveys. We consider detailed chemical evolution models for the Milky Way halo, discs and bulge, and we compare our model predictions with the most recent spectroscopic data for these different Galactic components. In particular, we focus on the decrease of lithium at high metallicity observed by the AMBRE Project, the Gaia-ESO Survey, and other spectroscopic surveys, which still remains unexplained by theoretical models. We analyse the various lithium producers and confirm that novae are the main source of lithium in the Galaxy, in agreement with other previous studies. Moreover, we show that, by assuming that the fraction of binary systems giving rise to novae is lower at higher metallicity, we can suggest a novel explanation to the lithium decline at super-solar metallicities: the above assumption is based on independent constraints on the nova system birthrate, that have been recently proposed in the literature. As regards to the thick disc, it is less lithium enhanced due to the shorter timescale of formation and higher star formation efficiency with respect to the thin disc and, therefore, we have a faster evolution and the "reverse knee" in the A(Li) vs. [Fe/H] relation is shifted towards higher metallicities. Finally, we present our predictions about lithium evolution in the Galactic bulge, that, however, still need further data to be confirmed or disproved., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. We will discuss some highlights concerning the chemical evolution of our Galaxy, the Milky Way. First we will describe the main ingredients necessary to build a model for the chemical evolution of the Milky Way. Then we will illustrate some Milky Way models which includes detailed stellar nucleosynthesis and compute the evolution of a large number of chemical elements, including C, N, O, $\alpha$-elements, Fe and heavier. The main observables and in particular the chemical abundances in stars and gas will be considered. We present different chemical evolution models for the ultrafaint dwarf galaxy Bootes I. We either assume that the galaxy accretes its mass through smooth infall of gas of primordial chemical composition (classical models) or adopt mass accretion histories derived from the combination of merger trees with semi-analytical modelling (cosmologically-motivated models). Furthermore, we consider models with and without taking into account inhomogeneous mixing in the ISM within the galaxy. The theoretical predictions are then compared to each other and to the body of the available data. From this analysis, we confirm previous findings that Bootes I has formed stars with very low efficiency but, at variance with previous studies, we do not find a clear-cut indication that supernova explosions have sustained long-lasting galactic-scale outflows in this galaxy. Therefore, we suggest that external mechanisms such as ram pressure stripping and tidal stripping are needed to explain the absence of neutral gas in Bootes I today., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a new approach for chemical evolution modelling, specifically designed to investigate the chemical properties of dwarf galaxies in a full cosmological framework. In particular, we focus on the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy as a test bed for our model. We select four candidate Sculptor-like galaxies from the satellite galaxy catalogue generated by implementation of a version of the Munich semi-analytic model for galaxy formation on the level 2 Aquarius dark matter simulations. We follow explicitly the evolution of several chemical elements, both in the cold gas out of which the stars form and in the hot medium residing in the halo. We take into account in detail the lifetimes of stars of different initial masses, the distribution of the delay times for type Ia supernova explosions and the dependency of the stellar yields from the initial metallicity of the stars. We allow large fractions of metals to be deposited into the hot phase, either directly as stars die or through reheated gas flows powered by supernova explosions. In order to reproduce both the observed metallicity distribution function and the observed abundance ratios of long-lived stars of Sculptor, large fractions of the reheated metals must never re-enter regions of active star formation. Scaling relations of metallicity (O/H), star formation rate (SFR), and stellar mass give important insight on galaxy evolution. They are obeyed by most galaxies in the Local Universe and also at high redshift. In a companion paper, we compiled a sample of ~1100 galaxies from redshift 0 to ~3, spanning almost two orders of magnitude in metal abundance, a factor of $\sim10^6$ in SFR, and of ~10^5 in stellar mass. We have characterized empirically the star-formation "main sequence" (SFMS) and the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) for this sample, and also identified a class of low-metallicity starbursts, rare locally but more common in the distant universe. These galaxies deviate significantly from the main scaling relations, with high SFR and low metal content for a given M*. In this paper, we model the scaling relations and explain these deviations from them with a set of multi-phase chemical evolution models based on the idea that, independently of redshift, initial physical conditions in a galaxy's evolutionary history can dictate its location in the scaling relations. Our models are able to successfully reproduce the O/H, M*, and SFR scaling relations up to z~3, and also successfully predict the molecular cloud fraction as a function of stellar mass. These results suggest that the scaling relations are defined by different modes of star formation: an "active" starburst mode, more common at high redshift, and a quiescent "passive" mode that is predominant locally and governs the main trends., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication by MNRAS

Most galaxies follow well-defined scaling relations of metallicity (O/H), star formation rate (SFR), and stellar mass. However, low-metallicity starbursts, rare in the Local Universe but more common at high redshift, deviate significantly from these scaling relations. On the "main sequence" of star formation, these galaxies have high SFR for a given M*; and on the mass-metallicity relation, they have excess M* for their low metallicity. In this paper, we characterize O/H, M*, and SFR for these deviant "low-metallicity starbursts", selected from a sample of ~1100 galaxies, spanning almost two orders of magnitude in metal abundance, a factor of ~10^6 in SFR, and of ~10^5 in stellar mass. Our sample includes quiescent star-forming galaxies and blue compact dwarfs at redshift 0, luminous compact galaxies at redshift 0.3, and Lyman Break galaxies at redshifts 1-3.4. Applying a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to the galaxies in our sample with M*<10^{10} Msun gives a Fundamental Plane (FP) of scaling relations; SFR and stellar mass define the plane itself, and O/H its thickness. The dispersion for our sample in the edge-on view of the plane is 0.17 dex, independently of redshift and including the metal-poor starbursts. The same FP is followed by 55100 galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, with a dispersion of 0.06dex. In a companion paper, we develop multi-phase chemical evolution models that successfully predict the observed scaling relations and the FP; the deviations from the main scaling relations are caused by a different (starburst or "active") mode of star formation. We model the evolution of manganese relative to iron in the progenitor system of the globular cluster Omega Centauri by means of a self-consistent chemical evolution model. We use stellar yields that already reproduce the measurements of [Mn/Fe] versus [Fe/H] in Galactic field disc and halo stars, in Galactic bulge stars and in the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We compare our model predictions to the Mn abundances measured in a sample of 10 red giant members and 6 subgiant members of Omega Cen. The low values of [Mn/Fe] observed in a few, metal-rich stars of the sample cannot be explained in the framework of our standard, homogeneous chemical evolution model. Introducing cooling flows that selectively bring to the cluster core only the ejecta from specific categories of stars does not help to heal the disagreement with the observations. The capture of field stars does not offer a viable explanation either. The observed spread in the data and the lowest [Mn/Fe] values could, in principle, be understood if the system experienced inhomogeneous chemical evolution. Such an eventuality is qualitatively discussed in the present paper. However, more measurements of Mn in Omega Cen stars are needed to settle the issue of Mn evolution in this cluster., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The uncertainties which still plague our understanding of the evolution of the light nuclides D, 3He and 4He in the Galaxy are described. Measurements of the local abundance of deuterium range over a factor of 3. The observed dispersion can be reconciled with the predictions on deuterium evolution from standard Galactic chemical evolution models, if the true local abundance of deuterium proves to be high, but not too high, and lower observed values are due to depletion onto dust grains. The nearly constancy of the 3He abundance with both time and position within the Galaxy implies a negligible production of this element in stars, at variance with predictions from standard stellar models which, however, do agree with the (few) measurements of 3He in planetary nebulae. Thermohaline mixing, inhibited by magnetic fields in a small fraction of low-mass stars, could in principle explain the complexity of the overall scenario. However, complete grids of stellar yields taking this mechanism into account are not available for use in chemical evolution models yet. Much effort has been devoted to unravel the origin of the extreme helium-rich stars which seem to inhabit the most massive Galactic globular clusters. We present deep HST ACS/WFC photometry of the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 1569, one of the closest and strongest nearby starburst galaxies. These data allow us, for the first time, to unequivocally detect the tip of the red giant branch and thereby determine the distance to NGC 1569. We find that this galaxy is 3.36 +/- 0.20 Mpc away, considerably farther away than the typically assumed distance of 2.2 +/- 0.6 Mpc. Previously thought to be an isolated galaxy due to its shorter distance, our new distance firmly establishes NGC 1569 as a member of the IC 342 group of galaxies. The higher density environment may help explain the starburst nature of NGC 1569, since starbursts are often triggered by galaxy interactions. On the other hand, the longer distance implies that NGC 1569 is an even more extreme starburst galaxy than previously believed. Previous estimates of the rate of star formation for stars younger than ~ 1 Gyr become stronger by more than a factor of 2. Stars older than this were not constrained by previous studies. The dynamical masses of NGC 1569's three super star clusters, which are already known as some of the most massive ever discovered, increase by ~53% to 6-7x10^5 solar masses., Comment: Submitted to ApJ Letters. 5 pages, including 4 reduced-resolution figures. Despite the many studies on stellar nucleosynthesis published so far, the scenario for the production of Cu in stars remains elusive. In particular, it is still debated whether copper originates mostly in massive stars or type Ia supernovae. To answer this question, we compute self-consistent chemical evolution models taking into account the results of updated stellar nucleosynthesis. By contrasting copper evolution in Omega Cen and the Milky Way, we end up with a picture where massive stars are the major responsible for the production of Cu in Omega Cen as well as the Galactic disc., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

The deuterium abundances inferred from observations of the interstellar medium within 1-2 kpc of the Sun range over a factor of three and the corresponding oxygen abundances show an even larger dispersion. While the lower D (and O) abundances likely result from depletion onto dust, the higher D abundances are consistent with the BBN-predicted primordial D abundance and chemical evolution models of the Galaxy with infall of primordial or nearly primordial material. The large ranges in deuterium and oxygen abundances suggest that the effects of depletion and/or infall have not been homogenized in the local interstellar medium., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

(Abridged) Estimates of the interstellar deuterium abundance span a wide range of values. Here we study the evolution of deuterium in the framework of successful models for the chemical evolution of the Milky Way able to reproduce the majority of the observational constraints for the solar neighbourhood and for the Galactic disc. We show that, in the framework of our models, the lowest D/H values observed locally cannot be explained in terms of simple astration processes occurring during the Galaxy evolution. Indeed, the combination of a mild star formation and a continuous infall of unprocessed gas required to fit all the available observational data allows only a modest variation of the deuterium abundance from its primordial value., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

(Abridged.) We present one-zone chemical evolution models for two dwarf starburst galaxies, NGC 1705 and NGC 1569. Using information about the past star formation history and initial mass function of the systems previously obtained from Hubble Space Telescope colour-magnitude diagrams, we identify possible scenarios of chemical enrichment and development of galactic winds. In order not to overestimate the current metallicity of the interstellar gas inferred from H II region spectroscopy, we suggest that the winds efficiently remove from the galaxies the metal-rich ejecta of dying stars. Conversely, requiring the final mass of neutral gas to match the value inferred from 21-cm observations implies a relatively low efficiency of interstellar medium entrainment in the outflow, thus confirming previous findings that the winds driving the evolution of typical starbursts are differential. These conclusions could be different only if the galaxies accrete huge fractions of unprocessed gas at late times. By assuming standard stellar yields we obtain a good fit to the observed nitrogen to oxygen ratio of NGC 1569, while the mean N/O ratio in NGC 1705 is overestimated by the models. Reducing the extent of hot bottom burning in low-metallicity intermediate-mass stars does not suffice to solve the problem. Localized self-pollution from stars more massive than 60 MSun in NGC 1705 and/or funneling of larger fractions of nitrogen through its winds are then left to explain the discrepancy between model predictions and observations. Inspection of the log(N/O) vs. log(O/H)+12 diagram for a sample of dwarf irregular and blue compact dwarf galaxies in the literature favours the latter hypothesis., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication on MNRAS

Thanks to the capabilities of modern telescopes and instrumentation, it is now possible to resolve single stars in external dwarf galaxies, provided they are bright enough. For galactic regions with deep enough photometry, detailed colour-magnitude diagrams are constructed, from which the star formation history and the initial mass function can be inferred by comparison with synthetic diagrams. Both the star formation history and the initial mass function are free parameters of galactic chemical evolution models. The stellar initial mass function and the stellar lifetimes are basic ingredients of chemical evolution models, for which different recipes can be found in the literature. In this paper, we quantify the effects on chemical evolution studies of the uncertainties in these two parameters. We concentrate on chemical evolution models for the Milky Way, because of the large number of good observational constraints. Such chemical evolution models have already ruled out significant temporal variations for the stellar initial mass function in our own Galaxy, with the exception perhaps of the very early phases of its evolution. Therefore, here we assume a Galactic initial mass function constant in time. Through an accurate comparison of model predictions for the Milky Way with carefully selected data sets, it is shown that specific prescriptions for the initial mass function in particular mass ranges should be rejected. As far as the stellar lifetimes are concerned, the major differences among existing prescriptions are found in the range of very low-mass stars. Because of this, the model predictions widely differ for those elements which are produced mostly by very long-lived objects, as for instance 3He and 7Li. However, it is concluded that model predictions of several important observed quantities, constraining the plausible Galactic formation scenarios, are fairly robust with respect to changes in both the stellar mass spectrum and the stellar lifetimes. We determined C, N and alpha-element relative abundances in the gas surrounding six QSOs at an average redshift of < z > ~ 2.4, by studying six narrow associated absorption systems in UVES high-resolution spectra. We found five systems with a metallicity (measured by C/H) consistent or above the solar value. The ionization structure observed in the associated systems is clearly different from that of the intervening ones, indicating that the associated systems are influenced by the strong UV flux from the QSO. There is a possible correlation (anticorrelation) between [N/C] ([Si/C]) and [C/H] of the studied associated systems, and [N/C] >= 0 when [C/H] >= 0. We have compared these observational results with the predictions of a model simulating the joint evolution of QSOs and their spheroidal hosts. The agreement turns out to be very good, in particular, the case envisaging massive haloes and high star-formation rates recovers both the correlation between [N/C] and [C/H] and the anticorrelation for [Si/C] vs. [C/H]. Narrow associated absorption systems prove to be powerful tracers of the chemical abundances in gas belonging to high redshift spheroidal galaxies. The outflow of this same gas, triggered by the QSO feedback, is probably going to contribute to the early enrichment of the surrounding intergalactic medium. A larger statistics, possibly increasing the number of ionisation stages, chemical elements and the redshift range, would allow us to put firm constraints on detailed chemical evolution models of galaxies at high redshifts., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, submitted to MNRAS. In this paper we study the impact of nova nucleosynthesis on models for the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. It is found that novae are likely to be the sources of non-negligible fractions of the 7Li and 13C observed in disc stars. The recent determination of the baryon-to-photon ratio from WMAP data by Spergel et al. (2003) allows one to fix with unprecedented precision the primordial abundances of the light elements D, 3He, 4He and 7Li in the framework of the standard model of big bang nucleosynthesis. We adopt these primordial abundances and discuss the implications for Galactic chemical evolution, stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis of the light elements. We study the role played both by novae and single stars in enriching the ISM of the Galaxy with CNO group nuclei, in the framework of a detailed successful model for the chemical evolution of both the Galactic halo and disc. Once all the nucleosynthesis sources of CNO elements are taken into account, we conclude that 13C, 15N and 17O are likely to have both a primary and a secondary origin, in contrast to previous beliefs. We discuss the evolution of oxygen, carbon and nitrogen in galaxies of different morphological type by adopting detailed chemical evolution models with different star formation histories (continuous star formation or starbursts). We start by computing chemical evolution models for the Milky Way with different stellar nucleosynthesis prescriptions. Then, a comparison between model results and ``key'' observational constraints allows us to choose the best set of stellar yields. Once the best set of yields is identified for the Milky Way, we apply the same nucleosynthesis prescriptions to other spirals (in particular M101) and dwarf irregular galaxies. We compare our model predictions with the [C,N,O/Fe] vs. [Fe/H], log(C/O) vs. 12+ log(O/H), log(N/O) vs. 12+ log(O/H) and [C/O] vs. [Fe/H] relations observed in the solar vicinity, along the disk and in other galaxies. By taking into account the results obtained for all the studied galaxies (Milky Way, M101, dwarf galaxies and DLAs) our main conclusions are: a) once the available observational data are properly interpreted, there is no compelling evidence for requiring the production of primary N in massive stars (M>10Msun); b) both C and N we see today in the ISM come mainly from low- and intermediate-mass stars. Direct and indirect pieces of observational evidence point to a strong connection between high-redshift quasars and their host galaxies. In the framework of a model where the shining of the quasar is the episode that stops the formation of the galactic spheroid inside a virialized halo, it has been proven possible to explain the submillimetre source counts together with their related statistics and the local luminosity function of spheroidal galaxies. The time delay between the virialization and the quasar manifestation required to fit the counts is short and incresing with decresing the host galaxy mass. In this paper we compute the detailed chemical evolution of gas and stars inside virialized haloes in the framework of the same model, taking into account the combined effects of cooling and stellar feedback. Under the assumption of negligible angular momentum, we are able to reproduce the main observed chemical properties of local ellipticals. In particular, by using the same duration of the bursts which are required in order to fit the submillimetre source counts, we recover the observed increase of the Mg/Fe ratio with galactic mass. Since for the most massive objects the assumed duration of the burst is Tburst < 0.6 Gyr, we end up with a picture for elliptical galaxy formation in which massive spheroids complete their assembly at early times, thus resembling a monolithic collapse, whereas smaller galaxies are allowed for a more prolonged star formation, thus allowing for a more complicated evolutionary history., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Elliptical galaxies are the main contributors to the chemical enrichment of the intracluster and intergalactic medium; understanding how they form and evolve enables us to get important hints on the amounts of energy and processed matter that they eject into the ICM/IGM. Recent pieces of observational evidence point to a strong connection between high redshift quasars and their host galaxies. The aim of this paper is to prove that the main aspects of the chemical evolution of the spheroids can be reproduced in the framework of a model where the shining of the quasar is intimately related to the formation of the galactic nucleus. A key assumption is that the quasars shone in an inverted order with respect to the hierarchical one (i.e., stars and black holes in bigger dark halos formed before those in smaller ones) during an early episode of vigorous star formation. This scenario closely resembles the so-called `inverse wind' model invoked to explain the observed increase of the [Mg/Fe] ratio in the nuclei of ellipticals with increasing the galactic mass, the only difference being that now the time for the occurrence of a galactic wind is not determined by the energy input from supernovae, but is indeed the energy injected by the quasar which regulates the onset of the wind phase., Comment: 7 pages, latex, 2 figures. We adopt up-to-date 7Li yields from asymptotic giant branch stars in order to study the temporal evolution of 7Li in the solar neighbourhood in the context of a revised version of the two-infall model for the chemical evolution of our galaxy. We consider several lithium stellar sources besides the asymptotic giant branch stars such as Type II supernovae, novae, low-mass giants as well as Galactic cosmic rays and low-mass X-ray binaries. We conclude that asymptotic giant branch stars cannot be considered as important 7Li producers as believed in so far and that the contribution of low-mass giants and novae is necessary to reproduce the steep rise of the 7Li abundance in disk stars as well as the meteoritic 7Li abundance. In this paper we adopt a chemical evolution model, which is an improved version of the Chiappini, Matteucci and Gratton (1997) model, assuming two main accretion episodes for the formation of the Galaxy. The present model takes into account in more detail than previously the halo density distribution and explores the effects of a threshold density in the star formation process, during both the halo and disk phases. In the comparison between model predictions and available data, we have focused our attention on abundance gradients as well as gas, stellar and star formation rate distributions along the disk. We suggest that the mechanism for the formation of the halo leaves detectable imprints on the chemical properties of the outer regions of the disk, whereas the evolution of the halo and the inner disk are almost completely disentangled. This is due to the fact that the halo and disk densities are comparable at large Galactocentric distances and therefore the gas lost from the halo can substantially contribute to building up the outer disk. We also show that the existence of a threshold density for the star formation rate, both in the halo and disk phase, is necessary to reproduce the majority of observational data in the solar vicinity and in the whole disk. Moreover, we predict that the abundance gradients along the Galactic disk must have increased with time and that the average [alpha/Fe] ratio in stars (halo plus disk) slightly decrease going from 4 to 10 Kpcs from the Galactic center.
