The energy consumption of office buildings has increased sharply since the 21st century with the increasing urbanization coverage. At this stage, the energy consumption of office buildings in China mainly comes from air conditioning and lighting. This paper obtains the regression equation of natural lighting illumination and radiant heat gain under different curtain conditions through experiments and simulations, and gives the theoretical calculation process of curtain regulation of office thermal and light environment and energy consumption. DeST and Ecotect software were used to analyze the thermal and light environment and energy consumption of the office. The results show that setting curtains in the room can effectively improve the indoor thermal light environment, the higher the transmittance of curtains the lower the lighting energy consumption, the higher the number of high temperature hours of natural room temperature and the greater the radiant heat gain. The room with thick curtains has the lowest energy consumption for air conditioning in summer, followed by the room with thin curtains, and the room without curtains has the highest energy consumption for air conditioning. The room without curtains has the lowest energy consumption for artificial lighting, the room with thin curtains has the second lowest, and the room with thick curtains has the highest electricity consumption for artificial lighting. The air conditioning energy consumption accounts for the main building energy consumption, followed by the lighting energy consumption. After setting curtains in the office, the air conditioning energy consumption caused by the solar radiation heat entering the room through the exterior windows is smaller than the lighting energy consumption caused by artificial lighting. Therefore, the installation of internal shading with moderate transmittance and good thermal insulation performance can make the energy saving of lighting and air conditioning energy consumption reach the optimal value. With the rapid development of the economy, carbon neutral and carbon peak are on the agenda in China, and the reform of intelligent construction and assembly building is in full swing in the Chinese construction industry. In order to further explore and study the relationship between the textural structural issues of the envelope structure and the overall energy consumption situation of the house, and further bridge the gap between the actual energy-saving design scheme and the actual application scheme, therefore, this paper takes a certain place as a research object to study the phenomenon of design assembly energy saving, based on dozens of assembly building enterprises researched, selected samples of envelope components studied, selected BIM technology for premodeling optimization, used neural network algorithm for analysis of influencing factors, and studied the application in the study of energy-saving optimization of assembly building envelope in the western Sichuan plain area, and used OpenStudio was used to build a model to simulate the heating and air conditioning load of the assembled building numerically and to fit the quantitative relationship between the variable factors and the building energy consumption. The exposure to extremely high temperatures varies across population groups. Those with better adaptation strategies (such as air conditioning) suffer less. This paper combines China's daily mean temperature data with comprehensive national survey data at the household level and estimates the relationship between high-temperature exposure and adaptation behavior of urban dwellers. We find that the usage of air conditioning and electric fans by urban households in China increases with their summer high-temperature exposures. The rise in the number of days with extreme heat (mean temperature exceeding 80 °F) induces the purchase and use of air conditioning. High-temperature adaptability varied across households-the rich are more likely to increase air conditioning usage to cope with the high-temperature discomfort; while the poor are less likely to afford such a market product for adaptation, they suffer more from high-temperature exposure. Solar photovoltaic driven air conditioning (PVAC) system with electricity storage is proposed as a good solution to help shifting peak load and consuming solar energy. In this paper, a grid-connected PVAC system using the TRNSYS simulation model consisting of PV panels, traditional air conditioners (TAC), power conditioning units, inverters, and grid connection equipment is proposed to investigate the economic feasibility compared with the traditional air conditioner. In the PVAC system, the electricity, firstly generated by PV panels and then stored in battery, is consumed by a DC inverter air conditioner to maintain the temperature of the room and the surplus electricity is sold to the grid. A life cycle cost comparison between PVAC system, traditional air conditioning system, and decomposed PV and air conditioning systems of three typical application cases is conducted, in which the operation conditions are based on the present circumstances of China. The results show that, in comparison with conventional air conditioners, better economic benefits can be achieved when the peak load of the air conditioning system is over a certain value. Sensitivity analysis is conducted to evaluate the effects caused by variation of economic assumptions. At last, a new operation model is proposed to achieve more benefits for the system. The conventional air conditioning system used in high-speed railways has limitations in heating performance and environmental impact, necessitating the exploration of alternative refrigerants. The transcritical CO 2 system has gained popularity due to its exceptional heating efficiency and environmental benefits. This study aims to evaluate the energy and environmental potentials for transcritical CO 2 systems in high-speed trains based on four-vertical-and-four-horizontal railway lines within different climatic regions of China. A high-fidelity transcritical CO 2 system model was first developed and validated through experiments. Then, a comprehensive energy and environmental evaluation method was proposed and applied to the four-vertical-and-four-horizontal railway lines. The results indicated that the transcritical CO 2 system had a superior heating performance and competitive cooling performance based on daily and annual operations. Furthermore, the transcritical CO 2 system exhibited significant environmental advantages with lower total life cycle climate performance for all lines, with an average emissions reduction ratio of 17.6% and a maximum emissions reduction ratio of 26.98%. One of the major adaptation mechanisms to climate change is increased demand for cooling via the air conditioning of indoor environments. China's demand for air conditioners has displayed explosive growth since 1995. This paper provides estimates of the income and short run weather sensitivity of air conditioner adoption across urban areas for 29 Chinese provincial entities. The microbial contamination of central air conditioning system is one of the important factors that affect the indoor air quality. Actual measurement and analysis were carried out on microbial contamination in central air conditioning system at a venue in Dalian, China. Illumina miseq method was used and three fungal samples of two units were analysed by high throughput sequencing. Results showed that the predominant fungus in air conditioning unit A and B were Candida spp. and Cladosporium spp., and two fungus were further used in the hygrothermal response experiment. Based on the data of Cladosporium in hygrothermal response experiment, this paper used the logistic equation and the Gompertz equation to fit the growth predictive model of Cladosporium genera in different temperature and relative humidity conditions, and the square root model was fitted based on the two environmental factors. In addition, the models were carried on the analysis to verify the accuracy and feasibility of the established model equation.

In order to ensure the cleanliness of operating room, clean air conditioners are installed in the clean operation departments in hospitals in China. Purification air conditioning system is an air conditioning system with a special function that ensures the cleanliness of the operating room and the required temperature and humidity in the operating room to avoid infection. This paper took the energy-saving design of the clean air-conditioning system of the clean operation department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical College, Zhejiang, China, as an example to illustrate the energy-saving methods such as layout optimization, air-conditioning division, secondary return air setting and operation mode adjustment. The energy consumption of primary return air technology and secondary return air technology was calculated. The results showed that energy-saving design could save nearly one-third of energy, improve the level of air-conditioning operation and management, reduce costs, and improve resource utilization, which is of great significance to social development. In order to explore the thermal characteristics and thermal storage performance analysis of energy-saving phase change heat storage materials in buildings, taking the common exterior wall insulation composite wall structure in southwestern China as an example, the influence of insulation board structure thickness design on the total cost of residential air conditioning energy consumption and insulation board cost is studied, thus clarifying the concept and calculation origin of economic insulation thickness. The experimental results show that by drawing mathematical functions of energy consumption cost, total cost, and insulation material cost in the same 2-D co-ordinate, it is intuitively demonstrated that the minimization of total cost can be ensured when the insulation thickness is in an economic state, and the specific economic thickness can be accurately calculated through example data. Therefore, specific measures for improving external wall insulation from refined insulation structure design are proposed. It has been proven that the design of the exterior wall insulation layer structure is an important way to improve the overall energy-saving benefits of building exterior wall insulation. • The principle of difference information and the principle of minimum information are discussed. • The proposed method can deal with the environment problem in other regions. • The unequal adjacent accumulation multivariate grey model is used to forecast the public concern about air pollution. In grey theory, the principle of difference information holds that difference is information. To mine the difference information between data, the unequal accumulation is proposed in this paper. The unequal accumulation reduces the loss of difference information and improves the forecasting performance of the grey model. Based on the unequal accumulation, the unequal adjacent discrete multivariable grey model is proposed. According to the comparison with other models, the proposed model has good forecast performance and algorithm efficiency. To further prove the practical significance of the model, it is used to predict the public concern about air pollution in three cities of China. The results show that the public concern about air pollution in cities with different air pollution conditions is quite different. The applications of conventional heat pipes have been hindered by a few weaknesses, such as the low heat recovery effectiveness, the cross-pollution of fresh and exhaust air, and the difficult switch modes between winter and summer working conditions. In order to find solutions for those problems, a three-dimensional heat pipe exchanger was developed, and an experimental platform was built to test the heat recovery effectiveness of this heat pipe exchanger under different working conditions. Moreover, the operating performances of the three-dimensional heat pipe exchanger unit were monitored throughout one year in a hospital located in the hot summer and cold winter region of China. The field measurement results indicated that the heat recovery effectiveness could be effectively improved by reducing the air volume and the up-wind speed, increasing the cold air and hot air inlet temperature, and increasing the rows of pipes. According to optimizing the structure and operation parameters, the heat recovery efficiencies of the three-dimensional heat pipe exchanger increased by 65~85%. The recommended operation parameters of the three-dimensional heat pipe exchanger in winter and summer for indoor exhaust air temperature were 20 ± 2 °C and 22 ± 2 °C, respectively. The heat recovery effectiveness could reach up to 66% and 64.5% when the indoor and outdoor air temperature differences were higher than 11 °C and 5 °C in winter and summer, respectively. This study provides effective, reliable, and easily implementable methods for the application of three-dimensional heat pipe heat recovery devices in building HVAC systems. Interior decorating coatings (IDCs) are the heat-transfer medium between indoor air and building walls, which mainly form the cooling load and are important in an indoor built environment. To explore the impacts of the precooling process of IDCs on indoor thermal environment of occupants during intermittent air conditioning, this paper investigated the dynamic thermal response of IDCs. Three representative coating materials were integrated to the external insulation wall and internal insulation wall, and their interior surface temperatures were experimentally tested under intermittent air conditioning operation in southern China. Moreover, a heat transfer model was established and verified to analyze the influences of IDC on the thermal response of the interior surface. During the pull-down process, the cold was accumulated in the IDC layer with small thermal diffusivity and could not be transferred into the wall inside, so that the largest temperature reduction was obtained, meaning that the indoor thermal environment could meet the setpoint in a short time. According to modelling calculations, the thick IDC with volumetric specific heat capacity less than 1 × 105 J/(m3·K) and small thermal conductivity integrated to the internal insulation wall was beneficial to increase the thermal response rate and had the better energy-saving efficiency. Exploring how urban form affects the Particulate Matter 2.5 (PM2.5) concentration could help to find environmentally friendly urbanization. According to the definition of geography, this paper constructs a comprehensive urban form evaluation index system applicable to many aspects. Four urban form metrics, as well as road density and five control variables are selected. Based on 2015 data on China's 340 prefecture-level cities, the spatial regression model and geographically weighted regression model were used to explore the relationship between the urban form evaluation index system and PM2.5 pollution. The main results show that the spatial distribution of PM2.5 in China follows an increasing trend from northwest to southeast. Urban form indicators such as AI, LPI, PLAND, LSI and road density were all significantly related to PM2.5 concentrations. More compact urban construction, lower fragmentation of urban land, and lower density of the road network are conducive factors for improving air quality conditions. In addition, affected by seasonal changes, the correlation between urban form and PM2.5 concentration in spring and winter is higher than that in summer and winter. Based on China Migrants Dynamic Survey data, this paper applies a two-step conditional maximum likelihood method and quantile regression method to analyze the mechanism underlying environmental migration. The results confirm a nonlinear relationship between air quality and migrants' settlement intentions. Different conditions of air quality differences between cities will lead to structural changes in the settlement intentions of migrants. Specifically, the real curve falls first decreases, increases and then decreases again. Under specific urban environment dimensions, the paper provides a new policy path for urban decision-makers on how to coordinate the human capital of migrants and sustainable urban development. Abstract: Reducing the energy consumption of air-conditioning systems is becoming increasingly important. This paper focuses on the air-conditioning system in Terminal 3 in Xi’an Xianyang International Airport, the first airport terminal to adopt radiant cooling in China. In the large spaces of this airport terminal, a temperature and humidity independent control (THIC) system has been adopted instead of a conventional nozzle air supply method, which significantly reduces the energy consumption of the air supply. The radiant floor is the main mechanism for indoor temperature control, while a liquid desiccant outdoor air processor combined with displacement ventilation is responsible for humidity control. Ice storage is adopted to reduce operating costs, and the supplied chilled water temperature can be as low as 3°C. This paper examines the performance of the THIC system in detail. The indoor environment is determined through measurements to be comfortable, and the on-site performances of key components in both the airport terminal and the cooling plant are investigated. The outdoor air processor supplies air of appropriate temperature and humidity ratio; two kinds of radiant floors are used for temperature control, both with measured cooling capacities of about 30–40W/m2; and the energy efficiency ratio (EER) of the cooling plant is 2.62. Climate change may seriously affect the energy consumption of buildings by influencing their air conditioning loads, especially the ventilation loads which vary directly with the local weather conditions. Research on how the ventilation load responds to climate change is of great significance, especially in coastline subtropical regions like Hong Kong. This paper investigated the impacts of climate change on buildings' ventilation load and building energy use in Hong Kong with the hourly meteorological data from 1950 to 2007. Results have been well validated by the simulation of a typical local hotel building during this period. The results show that climate warming increases both sensible and latent parts of the cooling ventilation load. The latent part, which occupies ∼80% of the total ventilation load, increases at a higher rate, about twice of that of the sensible one. Furthermore, it is found that the urban heat island (UHI) effect causes a much higher growth rate of the ventilation load at night, which is about three times compared with that in the daytime. The latent part of the cooling ventilation load at night, which is found to be the most sensitive component to the climate change, plays a most significant role in the energy consumption increase. The possible measures were thus suggested to avoid negative changes of the ventilation load. Abstract: An extended Gebhart–Block model for large space buildings is proposed in this paper, which is used to predict the vertical temperature distribution of hybrid ventilation. Natural ventilation coupled with air-conditioning is described with a mathematical model. The indoor thermal environment formed by the air-conditioning and the natural ventilation can also be conducted for the potential analysis and optimal use of the natural ventilation. Experiments were carried out in an atrium building in Shanghai Research Institute of Building Sciences. Exposure to air pollution is one of the greatest environmental risks for human health. Air pollution level is significantly driven by anthropogenic emissions and meteorological conditions. To protect people from air pollutants, China has implemented clean air actions to reduce anthropogenic emissions, which has led to rapid improvement in air quality over China. Here, we evaluated the impact of anthropogenic emissions and meteorological conditions on trends in air pollutants in a coastal city (Lianyungang) in eastern China from 2015 to 2022 based on a random forest model. The annual mean concentration of observed air pollutants, including fine particles, inhalable particles, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and carbon monoxide, presented significant decreasing trends during 2015–2022, with dominant contributions (55–75%) by anthropogenic emission reduction. An increasing trend in ozone was observed with an important contribution (28%) by anthropogenic emissions. The impact of meteorological conditions on air pollution showed significant seasonality. For instance, the negative impact on aerosol pollution occurred during cold months, while the positive impact was in warm months. Emission reduction in buildings is essential to combat climate change. However, current strategies failed to balance development and emissions reduction goals. This paper selects a public building in China and simulates its initial energy consumption and carbon emissions. Then it establishes a multi-objective optimization model to explore cost-effective and emission-reduction strategies, considering photovoltaic and ground-source-heat-pump (GSHP) systems. Finally, NSGA-Ⅱ is used to solve, and sensitivity analysis is carried out. Results show that: (1) Energy consumed by the air conditioning system is the largest in January for heating and in July for cooling, validating the accuracy of the energy simulation model. (2) Economic efficiency and emission reduction effect are better when photovoltaic and GSHP systems are implemented simultaneously. (3) Electricity price, initial investment cost, annual solar peak hours, and the proportion of shallow geothermal energy significantly impact carbon emissions and cost. (4) The photovoltaic and power grid substitution ratio will exceed 8% every five years, and all substitutions will be completed in 2050. After adopting the GSHP system, the complete replacement will be advanced to 2045. Setting subsidies significantly shortens the payback period of investment and ensures firms' economic benefits. At present, China's high-speed rail is in a period of rapid development. Most of the refrigerants used in Chinese motor train units at this stage are still R134a and R407c, which have an impact on the environment. In response to the environmental protection concept of green travel, it is of great significance to study the air conditioning system of motor train units using CO2 refrigerant. Using CFD simulation analysis technology, the heat transfer performance of the air side of the CO2 finned tube evaporator used in the air conditioning system of the motor train unit is studied. We select the air outlet temperature, pressure drop, heat transfer factor, and resistance factor as the objective function, in addition, monitoring points are set up in the air flow channel to monitor the turbulent flow field and pipe wall pressure. Our research shows that the cooling capacity of the CO2 evaporator can reach up to 29.76 kW, which can meet the heat exchange required in the air conditioning system of the motor train unit. In order to obtain a better structure and the conditions of the heat transfer effect, structural optimization was conducted. The simulation results demonstrate several trends: (i) With the augment of the air inlet velocity, the cooling capacity of the evaporator increases and the heat exchange effect improves; when the air inlet ve > 2.2 m/s, the effect of continuing to augment ve on heat exchange is weak. (ii) Following appropriate reduction of the diameter of the heat exchange tube, the wind resistance is reduced and the cooling capacity of the evaporator is improved. (iii) With the enlargement of the fin spacing, the turbulent motion in the flow channel can be fully developed, there is a peak in the change in the heat exchange tube area optimization factor, and the optimal fin spacing is between 1.6 mm and 1.7 mm; at this time, the average turbulent kinetic energy of the air side is larger and the turbulent dissipation rate is smaller. Traditional heating systems, such as kangs (bed-stoves), radiators driven by mini-stove, and burning caves have been still widely used to tide over the long cold winter in most rural areas of northern China. In this paper, emissions and components of exhausting smoke from biomass burning during the heating and cooking period in rural areas, which have been measured. In addition, the impacts of the CO and PM2.5 concentration on the air pollution inside and outside the rural house has been studied and discussed. Different combustion efficiency of various fuels and energy consumption modes impact on the indoor air quality of rural houses are very significant. CO, NOx and other inhalable particles emission from rural areas surrounding the urban areas could not be overlooked. China has been the world's largest producer and consumer of air conditioners, and more and more RACs 1 1 The RACs is short for room air conditioners. would be owned by China's households along with the rapid economic development. Air Conditioner is also considered as one of the largest potential contributors to energy reduction among home appliances because of the huge energy consumption. Therefore, the national energy efficiency standards were issued to promote the use and production of high-efficient RACs. According to China's energy efficiency standards, this paper investigated the electricity savings and CO 2 emission reductions from RACs over the period of 2005–2025. The results indicate that the rural RAC market which develops more slowly than the urban one still has great potential, and government has to revise subsidy policies to make the standards more effective, especially for rural areas. In 2025, the total electricity consumption of RACs is projected to be 598–674 TW h, while the amount without energy efficiency standards is 753 TW h. From 2005 to 2025, the energy efficiency standards for RACs can save 1430–2540 TW h electricity and reduce 908.3–1610. 1 Mt CO 2 emissions in different scenarios. The contradiction between the shortage of urban land and the demand for urban green space needs to be solved reasonably. Different from urban parks, the cooling effect of small green space (SGs) has not been paid enough attention or fully evaluated. The major objective of this research was to explore the cooling and energy saving benefits of SGs with administrative units. The ENVI-met and EnergyPlus models were built based on field measurements on the green space of Xi'an Jiaotong University Qujiang Campus. Field measurement shows that the closer an area to the green space, the lower the air temperature and the higher the relative humidity, especially in the daytime. The ENVI-met results showed that the SGs can reduce the temperature by 0.66 °C within the range of 1260 m × 1350 m compared with the building scene at noon, the EnergyPlus simulation results showed that the building 100 m away from the SGs can reduce the air conditioning energy consumption by 2.1% compared with the distance of 150 m. The research can improve the planning and design standards of urban green space, clarify the cooling and energy saving benefits of SGs, and promote the ecological urban design. Now requirements for the thermal performance of building walls are based on the assumption that heat flux transfers in one direction through the wall. However, in Hot Summer and Cold Winter Region of China, the direction of heat flow in the wall not only changes with the seasons, but also changes in the same period of using. In this paper, dynamic thermal process of externally insulated walls in different air-conditioner's running state in summer in Chongqing, China, was tested. The distribution characteristics of the outdoor and indoor air temperature and the surface and inner temperatures of the wall were analyzed and demonstrated. Based on the unsteady-state heat transfer theory, the study calculated and analyzed the distribution characteristics of the direction of the heat flux in the thermal process. Also the characteristics of insulation and heat preservation for walls under different air-conditioner's running state were analyzed. It is shown that, in any air-conditioner's running state, the direction of the heat flux through the wall is obviously dynamically changing. There is obvious difference in the thermal performance needs of the wall; that is, it has strong demand for thermal insulation in daytime and strong demand for heat dissipation during night time in summer. We examine the distributional effects of high temperature on worker performance and the effectiveness of adaptation when capital investments such as air conditioning are not feasible. Using a longitudinal data set of 3196 professional archers in 57 competitions during 2010–2016 in China, which includes accurate performance measures at the individual‐by‐contest level, we show that heat causes more uneven performance distributions by hurting the bottom performers more than the top performers. More frequent heat reduces average performance and raises distributional inequality more than increases in average temperature. Abstract: This paper aims to investigate the effects of retrofitting existing public buildings in the “Hot Summer Cold Winter” climate region of China, using simulation and a case study, to see how retrofitted public buildings perform in the face of climate change in the region. This area of China is one of the most challenging regions for providing occupant comfort in buildings, with high demands for heating as well as cooling, together with high humidity levels. The simulation results suggest that energy reduction of up to 40% with improvements to the building enclosure is possible by retrofitting current existing public buildings to the new Chinese National Standard for the Zhejiang Province. Requirements for combating possible increase in energy consumption from heating and cooling demands due to future climate change was also investigated, and it was found that by simply improving U-Values of the building envelope to the new national standards set for the Zhejiang Province, the effects of future climate change can be nullified up to the 2080s. Further improvements to having similar standards as developed countries such as England and Wales will have less significance and cannot nullify the effects of climate change from the newly retrofitted public buildings. Abstract: In Hong Kong, conventional air-conditioning (AC) systems cause a high energy consumption and poor indoor thermal comfort. This paper investigated the AC load profiles of three typical local commercial buildings, i.e. office, hotel and retail, and examined the energy consumption of liquid desiccant cooling system (LDCS) for these buildings. Simulation results showed that the cooling load contributed to more than 98% of total annual load, with high latent load proportion from March to September. The high reheating ratio, i.e. from 60% to 90%, is found to be the main reason for the poor thermal comfort. Therefore, the LDCS which could handle sensible and latent loads separately was proposed. However, the electricity-driven LDCS was found not suitable for local commercial buildings. significant energy saving could be achieved by the solar-assisted LDCS system with thermal storage, when the installation area for solar collectors is larger than the minimum required one, i.e. 9.7m2/(kWm−2) for office and 12.7m2/(kWm−2) for hotel buildings. Energy saving of different system types with different installation areas was also studied. The solar-assisted LDCS shows more energy saving in winter but less in summer. Abstract: Quality credit has been an academic and commercial hotspot recently. This paper is mainly devoted into using a quantitative method to evaluate credit quality. Firstly, a plain but logical indicator system of quality credit is established. Then, the classical MCDM method TOPSIS is introduced to evaluate the credit quality of 8 air-conditioning enterprises in China market. The discussion of evaluation results proves the feasibility and effectiveness of TOPSIS and moreover, reflects that indicators affect the evaluation results significantly. Abstract: Hainan province is the only tropical and island province in China, with the unique climatic and geographical features. It has a different energy performance in public buildings from those in the inland areas. This paper investigated the current situation of energy consumption of the sampled public buildings, including 26 hotels, 24 office buildings and 7 department stores, through analyzing utility billing data, on-site survey and measurement, and site operational records. The breakdowns of energy consumption found out that the electricity dominated the energy consumption for all the sampled buildings and the air conditioning system played a key role in the energy consumption of major building services. By analyzing the main factors for building energy consumption, the annual average energy use indexes were calculated to be 141.63kWh/m2, 87.70kWh/m2, and 166.95kWh/m2 for hotels, office buildings and department stores, respectively. Besides, the comparison between Hainan province and other areas revealed that the building energy consumption of this tropical province was at a low level. Because indoor environment quality can influence the health and work efficiency of humans in buildings, field tests on the indoor environment quality were also carried out, and the performance of indoor environment quality was rated. Abstract: The high electric power consumption of air conditioning in communication base station needs to be solved urgently. This paper presents a new technology to discharge excess heat from a communication plant by utilizing the heat exchanger when the outdoor temperature is low enough. Then it compares the applied effects between two types of heat exchanger in a typical base station located in Beijing of China. It is found that this technology is feasible in Beijing of China. The plate heat exchanger can cool the station instead of air conditioning for about 5014hours each year, and the corresponding electronic power saving rate reaches up to 29%. Abstract: There are presently different types of air conditioning products in China such as room air conditioners, variable speed room air conditioners, unity air conditioners, multi-connected air-condition (heat pump) unit, chilled water air conditioning systems. For these air conditioning products, evaluation indexes have been created, respectively including energy efficiency ratio (EER), coefficient of performance (COP), seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) and integrated part load value (IPLV), and their energy efficiency standards have been established. Based on thermodynamic perfectibility, this paper makes the compatible analysis of the energy efficiency and thermodynamic perfectibility gradient of energy efficiency standards for different air conditioning products. According to testing conditions of evaluation indexes, these air conditioning products are classified into two groups, the standard rating conditions group (EER, COP) and the variable working condition group (SEER, IPLV). The results show the thermodynamic perfectibility of different air conditioning products grade as the same level for energy efficiency standards in each group differ from one another. Besides, the average thermodynamic perfectibility gradient of energy efficiency levels for air conditioning product in the standard rating conditions group is basically the same, and that of variable speed room air conditioners and multi-connected air-condition (heat pump) unit are the highest and lowest, respectively. Abstract: This paper reviews state of the art of combined chilled ceilings and displacement ventilation (CC/DV) systems all over the world. The feasibility of the application of the combined systems in South-China area is analyzed. However, there exist three main problems such as panel surface condensation, first investment cost and enough cooling capacity to be solved. Several methods were illustrated to prevent the condensation of the combined systems in three aspects. The high investment cost problem can be solved with the development and production of new independent terminal products of CC systems. Many products can meet the cooling load requirements in most cases which are suitable for applying the combined CC/DV systems. Abstract: A liquid desiccant based independent humidity control (IHC) air-conditioning system driven by heat pumps is presented in this paper. The system consists of a liquid desiccant fresh air processor and a high-temperature chilled water system. The operating principles of the fresh air processor and the whole system are presented in detail. Based on the in situ system installed in an ecological building of Shanghai Research Institute of Building Sciences (SRIBS), a performance investigation was performed in summer, 2007. The measurement results show that (1) the indoor temperature and humidity both are in the specified range; (2) the supply water temperature of the high-temperature refrigerator is higher than the corresponding indoor air dew point temperature, so no condensed water would be formed on the fan-coil unit (FCU) surface; and (3) the average coefficients of performances (COPs) of the fresh air processor and the high-temperature refrigerator are 6.24 and 4.38, respectively, and the average COP of the whole IHC system is 5.28. Abstract: The ground-coupled heat pump (GCHP) system is becoming attractive for air-conditioning in some moderate-weather regions due to its high energy efficiency and reliable operation capability. However, when the technology is used in buildings where there is only cooling load in hot-weather areas like Hong Kong, the heat rejected into the ground by the GCHP systems will accumulate around the ground heat exchangers (GHE). This heat accumulation will result in degradation of system performance and increment of system operating costs. This problem can be resolved by using the hybrid ground-coupled heat pump (HGCHP) system, which uses supplemental heat rejecters to reject the accumulated heat. This paper presents a practical hourly simulation model of the HGCHP system by modeling the heat transfer process of the system’s main components. The computer program based on this hourly simulation model can be used to calculate the hour-by-hour operation data of the HGCHP system. As a case study, both a HGCHP system and a traditional GCHP system are designed for a hypothetic private residential building located in Hong Kong, and the economic comparisons are conducted between these two types of systems. The simulation results show that the HGCHP system can effectively solve the heat accumulation problem and reduce both the initial costs and operating costs of the air-conditioning system in the building. Abstract: The design and operation of combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) systems are greatly dependent upon the seasonal atmospheric conditions, which determine thermal and power demands of buildings. This paper presents a mathematical analysis of CCHP system in comparison to separate system. The corresponding primary energy consumption in thermal demand management (TDM) and electrical demand management (EDM) operation modes are deduced. Three relative criteria, primary energy saving (PES), CO2 emission reduction (CO2ER), and annual total cost saving (ATCS) are employed to evaluate the respective performances of CCHP systems for a hypothetical building in five different climate zones from the technical, environmental and economic aspects. The results indicate that CCHP system in TDM mode in the cold area, where the building requires more heating during the year, achieves more benefit over separate system while CCHP system in EDM mode suits the building having stable thermal demand in mild climate zone. Abstract: The halocarbons studied here are chemicals controlled in the 1987 Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and its Amendments, which have both high ozone depleting potentials (ODPs) and high global warming potentials (GWPs). These halocarbons are mainly used for refrigeration, air-conditioning, foam blowing, tobacco expansion, aerosol propulsion, solvent cleaning, and fire fighting. China ratified the Montreal Protocol in 1991 and has been implementing the phase-out of halocarbons since then. In this paper, the emissions of halocarbons from China were estimated for 1995–2024 based on the historical consumption, the country program for complying with the Montreal Protocol, and the sector plans for phasing out halocarbons. Abstract: Evaporative cooling is able to generate the cooling medium at a temperature approaching to the ambient wet bulb temperature. In this paper, a low-energy air-conditioning strategy is proposed, which is a combination of cooled ceiling (CC), microencapsulated phase change material (MPCM) slurry storage and evaporative cooling technologies. The assessment of evaporative cooling availability and utilization is done for five representative climatic cities, including Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Lanzhou and Urumqi in China, and the energy saving potential of the proposed air-conditioning system is analyzed by using a well validated building simulation code. The results indicate that the new system offers energy saving potential up to 80% under northwestern Chinese climate and up to 10% under southeastern Chinese climate. The optimal design method of the slurry storage tank is also proposed based on the slurry cooling storage behaviors and cooling demand variations of the ceiling panels. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Near-extreme outside dry- and wet-bulb temperatures are essential for the design of building HVAC systems. Coincident design temperatures currently defined by ASHRAE and CIBSE may not fully allow engineers to design an HVAC system that can match a risk level desired for the problem at hand. A rational method is therefore presented in this paper for the proper selection of coincident climate design conditions, which is based on the theory of probability. An average statistic risk level has been proved to be approximately equal to the annual percentile of coincident dry- and wet-bulb temperatures for HVAC systems whose thermal time constant is less than 1h. An algorithm is also developed to determine the contours of equal risk. Representative coincident design dry- and wet-bulb temperatures are obtained through statistic analysis of the 15 years of weather records in Hong Kong. These rationally derived outside design temperatures are compared with the coincident dry- and wet-bulb temperatures currently defined by ASHRAE and CIBSE. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Based on the data collected in recent surveys, models have been established to represent the energy characteristics of living and dining rooms and bedrooms in typical residential buildings in Hong Kong, in respect of the layout and construction; the density and pattern of occupation; the power intensities and operating patterns of lighting and appliances; and air-conditioner operation patterns. With the help of computer simulation, the impacts of varying these characteristics on the annual space cooling load have been evaluated, which allowed representative internal load patterns for residential units to be defined. These are essential data for predicting energy use in residential buildings, which, in turn, is an indispensable part of studies on ways to assess and minimise energy use in such buildings. Air pollution is substantially modulated by meteorological conditions, and especially their diurnal variations may play a key role in air quality evolution. However, the behaviors of temperature diurnal cycles along with the associated atmospheric condition and their effects on air quality in China remain poorly understood. Here, for the first time, we examine the diurnal cycles of day-to-day temperature change and reveal their impacts on winter air quality forecasting in mountain-basin areas. Three different diurnal cycles of the preceding day-to-day temperature change are identified and exhibit notably distinct effects on the day-to-day changes in atmospheric-dispersion conditions and air quality. The diurnal cycle with increasing temperature obviously enhances the atmospheric stability in the lower troposphere and suppresses the development of the planetary boundary layer, thus deteriorating the air quality on the following day. By contrast, the diurnal cycle with decreasing temperature in the morning is accompanied by a worse dispersion condition with more stable atmosphere stratification and weaker surface wind speed, thereby substantially worsening the air quality. Conversely, the diurnal cycle with decreasing temperature in the afternoon seems to improve air quality on the following day by enhancing the atmospheric-dispersion conditions on the following day. Currently, more than 70% of the heated floor area in northern China is heated by coal, which severely burdens energy consumption and the environment. Hence, heating in this area is in urgent need of a shift to cleaner approaches. However, current progress is mainly attributed to the generous and unsustainable subsidies of the government, which have become a considerable financial burden. This paper develops a linear recursive dynamic model to identify economical, clean heating pathways in northern China. Different heating demands and clean technology promoting advances are considered. The results show that rapid promotion of clean heating technologies would save 1161–3026 Mtce (million tons of standard coal equivalent) of energy and avoid 7692–8843 Mt CO 2 , 12–13 Mt CH 4 , 8–9 Mt SO 2 and 7–8 Mt BC emissions cumulatively from 2020 to 2050. For rural residential buildings, biomass pellet furnaces, air source heat pumps and air conditioning should each contribute to about 30% of the heating demands in 2050 to achieve clean heating. However, coal-fired cogeneration should be the major method of coal heating, and mainly serve urban residential buildings and commercial buildings. The consequent energy cost savings of a faster clean heating transition would exceed the increase in investment costs and operational costs. Deep basins create uniquely favorable conditions for causing air pollution, and the Sichuan Basin (SCB) in Southwest China is such a basin featuring frequent heavy pollution. A wintertime heavy haze pollution event in the SCB was studied with conventional and intensive observation data and the WRF-Chem model to explore the 3D distribution of PM 2.5 to understand the impact of regional pollutant emissions, basin circulations associated with plateaus, and downwind transport to the adjacent areas. It was found that the vertical structure of PM 2.5 over the SCB was characterized by a remarkable hollow sandwiched by high PM 2.5 layers at heights of 1.5–3 km and a highly polluted near-surface layer. The southwesterlies over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) and Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau (YGP) resulted in a lee vortex over the SCB, which helped form and maintain heavy PM 2.5 pollution. The basin PM 2.5 was lifted into the free troposphere and transported outside of the SCB. At the bottom of the SCB, high PM 2.5 concentrations were mostly located in the northwestern and southern regions. Due to the blocking effect of the plateau terrain on the northeasterly winds, PM 2.5 gradually increased from northeast to southwest in the basin. In the lower free troposphere, the high PM 2.5 centers were distributed over the northwestern and southwestern SCB areas, as well as the central SCB region. For this event, the regional emissions from the SCB contributed 75.4 %–94.6 % to the surface PM 2.5 concentrations in the SCB. The SCB emissions were the major source of PM 2.5 over the eastern regions of the TP and the northern regions of the YGP, with contribution rates of 72.7 % and 70.5 %, respectively, during the dissipation stage of heavy air pollution over the SCB, which was regarded as the major pollutant source affecting atmospheric environment changes in Southwest China. • Cooling operation of the multi-energy system (SAAC and GSHP) was discussed, three different operation configurations and their best working condition in a NZEB was analyzed. • Real energy consumption of three working modes wad analyzed and discussed. A 4025 m2 office building was built in Beijing, China, in 2014 as a living laboratory and prototype to explore the technical energy systems of nearly zero energy buildings (NZEBs) in China. Not only the building itself but also the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems were designed with flexibility to explore their performance. Solar-assisted air conditioning (SAAC) and ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems with different terminal units were designed as HVAC systems for either experimental, comparison, or measurement purposes. In this paper, the cooling operation of multienergy systems is discussed on the basis of actual measurement data. HVAC systems have three possible types of operation configuration types, namely, SAAC priority, GSHP only and multimode. Operation scenarios for these configurations are presented first, and the small-scale simulation was carried out to analyze the performance of SAAC priority and GSHP#1 only mode. It indicates that SAAC could save about 47% of energy than that of GSHP#1. Then, the actual operation performance in 2018 was analyzed by reference to the operation data. Through this study, it is found that 1) multienergy systems of SAAC and GSHP operated well in this NZEBs during the summer season; 2) a 10 RT absorption chiller can work well for an NZEB building of approximately 1000 m2 when outdoor enthalpy is low and the solar radiation is stronger than 400 W/m2 as a result of high building thermal performance and air tightness; 3) SAAC can save about 40 to 50% of energy compared to that of GSHP system when providing services for the same terminal system under the same outdoor weather conditions and 4) The GSHP system is a good complement to the SAAC system which works well in June, September and early July when outdoor enthalpy is low. This study indicates that a combination of GSHP and SAAC systems is highly promising for NZEBs in cold climate zones such as Beijing, where the solar radiation is sound. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Both PM 2.5 and visibility are important physical parameters to measure the air pollution condition. This paper first provided a new normalization approach for the relationship between PM 2.5 and visibility in heavy pollutant region, which realized a mathematical calculation for two different physical parameters based on non-dimensional data process (also called Min-Max normalization). The normalization relationship showed a power function (y = axb) with high correlation coefficients. The inflection points of the maximum power function curvature composed the theoretical threshold range of PM 2.5 for improving or deteriorating the visibility. In the case city of north China, the threshold range of PM 2.5 was 112–121 μg·m−3 corresponding to the visibility range 4.5–5.9 km. Within the threshold range, the mean concentration of main pollutant components was 106 μg·m−3. The mean extinction coefficient, b ext of 743.5 Mm−1, was mainly contributed by organic matter (34%), ammonium nitrate (19%), ammonium sulfate (18%) and elemental carbon (13%). When PM 2.5 was below the range, the visibility increased significantly with the slow decrease of PM 2.5. When PM 2.5 exceeded the range, the visibility reduced seriously due to the saturated extinction contribution of the main pollutants. The new normalization approach theoretically revealed the significance of threshold and how to improve visibility by controlling PM 2.5 at different pollution stages.
