Purpose — The purpose of this paper is to show that time-based competition (TBC) strategies aligned to logistics and to multicultural awareness can help organisations respond appropriately and more quickly to the different needs and expectations of customers located around the globe. In a globalised market, where organisations are located in many different countries, establishing competitive advantages that result in sustainable leadership has become a goal to be reached. Design/methodology/approach — TBC was studied in furniture companies in Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Brazil by conducting case studies. The research presented here is part of a larger study that focuses on TBC strategies and multiculturalism in the furniture industry. Findings — Data were collected from various furniture companies located in countries targeted in this study in order to gauge the extent to which TBC in a multicultural and logistic-oriented approach has been taken on board, and how important it seems to be perceived in national contexts. Originality/value The paper presents some comparison on logistics management practices between the countries and suggests managerial implication for development and discusses about connection between cultural aspects and time based management. This article extends the current research on innovation by investigating the relationship between innovative capabilities and export firms' overall performance. From the perspectives of the resource-based view (RBV) and dynamic capability, we examine the differential and interactive effects of exploration and exploitation capabilities in product innovation for external markets and overall performance (direct and mediated by a new product). In addition, we test the moderating effect of market dynamism and the controlling effect of firm size on these relationships. Hence, the main contribution of this article is developing and empirically testing an original model, by combining these constructs that address new relationships, in an emerging country. This model was tested with data from 498 Brazilian export firms, distributed throughout all Brazilian manufacturing sectors, by firm size, and in states. The analysis was made with application of the structural equation modeling (SEM). As a result, we found support for the assumptions that exploitation capabilities influence product innovation and overall performance, whereas exploration capabilities and their interaction to exploitation capabilities influence overall performance, but not product innovation. Additionally, the relationship between exploitation capabilities and overall performance is mediated by product innovation. Unlike hypothesized, market dynamism does not moderate the relationship between product innovation and overall performance. Furthermore, firm size works as a controlling variable in the relationships analyzed. Regarding the implications for theory, this study contributes to grasp that exploitation capabilities influences a firm's overall performance, both directly and indirectly (via product innovation), and highlights the various direct and mediatory effects of innovation on overall performance. These insights show the importance of considering the role of mediating and moderating variables in theory and research models that address the determinants of overall performance to avoid overestimation of certain constructs. The main authors in the field of Human Resources Management (HRM), such as Guest (1987), Legge (2006), Armstrong (2009), Bohlander and Snell (2009) e Wilkinson et al. (2010), agreed that people have taken significant and strategic role in organizations. Therefore, the HRM field should not have traditional role of support, but rather provide organizational essential skills since human resources are responsible for the production of knowledge, providing a source of competitive advantage. That's why they should be valued and developed through HRM policies. Thus, the main objective of this paper was to present the scenario of studies on policies of HRM, showing the results of a literature review covering the international production and the scenario of the 108 studies published in national journals in the top-level (greater equal than Qualis B2) from the Management field in the past 10 years, i.e., in the 2000-2010 period. This review allowed the proposition of a research agenda. The results engendered in fact indicated the strategic importance for organizations of studies on HRM policies, however they noted the urgency to carry out more studies on the subject, since some policies, although strategic, are still very poorly investigated. There are also gaps in the literature regarding the development and validation of scales and for theoretical studies. In summary, it is suggested to relate the policies and practices of GP to other variables of organizational behavior and combine different methodological perspectives in order to analyze more accurately their effects on the welfare of employees and organizational outcomes. The intangible assets have been playing an important role in the firm's value creation, particularly because they are important sources of competitive advantage. Because of this increasing importance of intangible assets, it is essential to properly manage these assets in order to make the firm to reach its primary financial objective: the shareholder value maximization. This paper examines the relationship between intangible assets (specifically brands and patents) and the market value of Brazilian public companies. In general, the importance of innovation in the value creation of the companies seems to be evident. However, our research shows that, on one hand, patents are not significant to the value creation of Brazilian companies. On the other hand, results show that quantity of brands is significant and positively related to both proxies for value creation (market-to-book ratio and Tobin's Q). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of collaborative planning is the strategical information sharing among members of supply chain for competitive advantage. However, to get competitive performance depends on the employees' collaboration. Trying to study more in depth this theme, this article of exploratory nature methodology, investigated the level of the relationship between the collaboration of the employees and the collaborative planning performance at the brazilian company of paper and cellulose, Klabin S. A. The research result, analyzed with primary data gotten by interviews, evidenced high relationship level between employees' collaboration and colaborative planning performance. This result was corroborated by secondary data analysis, collected in official documents of the company. Although it had evidences of positive relationship, this results can not be analyzed just by the employees' collaboration. The analysis must include other variables as training and professional valuation, managerial skills programme, techniques and tools for management to obtain a better accuracity of the relationship level in each one of them to collaborative planning performance. This paper is concerned with analysis of labour productivity -- both individual and agregate -- in companies that integrate the shoemaking industry cluster in Franca, State of São Paulo, Brazil. It was an exploratory research limited to a non-statistical sample composed of 16 companies, two of them were large companies, seven were medium sized companies, and seven were small companies. Descriptive statistics and statistical inference techniques were applied (bivariate correlation test). The results showed that there is no evidence of homogeneity in labour performance productivity among companies that integrate the cluster, once they are unequal, non simetrical, showing that the shoemaking industry in Franca is closer to an assembly of similar companies than a cluster. This shows that there is a need for investment in management training in order to allow for the development of a cluster, which would in turn result in colective and dynamic competitive advantages. Purpose - Inspired by a framework about the insertion of sustainable development in business strategy proposed by Steurer et at, the purpose of this article is to describe the Caras do Brasil (Faces of Brazil) program, highlighting its characteristics and how these can contribute to a new interpretation of the framework initially proposed. Design/methodology/approach - A posteriori longitudinal research was undertaken with the first phase containing the theoretical research and the second phase containing the study of the Caras do Brasil (Faces of Brazil) program, which was designed as an incentive for the commercial development of small producers. Findings - The present case demonstrates two characteristics that give reason to refine the framework proposed by Steurer et at stakeholder pressures (either transactional or interactional) present differently; and the pressure of stakeholders is predominantly related to social concerns, rather than the predominance of environmental concerns stated by Steurer et at Research limitations/implications - The study limited itself to a posteriori data collection of the presented case, given that it was impossible to follow the program regularly from its implementation. The results were generated through the perspectives of employees in the sustainable development department of the Pâo de Açucar Group, in view of the fact that it was not possible to interview each of the stakeholders involved. Practical implications - For managers of many companies, the case can be considered an example of programs that seek to develop commercial activities with producers of poorer regions through the equilibrium of the economic, social and environmental dimensions. Originality/value - The article demonstrates the differences of interpretation of the framework proposed by Steurer et at when it is used to analyze a business program in a southern country such as Brazil. The article focuses on a research based on time-based competitiveness in various business enterprises in Brazil. A survey of the different arguments which authors use to justify why companies should pursue shorter cycle times was done and criticized. A semi-structured questionnaire was designed and applied to the sample through interviews with the management. After collecting data in the field, intra-case and cross-case analyses were performed and conclusions were drawn. A framework was developed based on the relevant literature and on best practice case studies to help companies develop efforts to become time-based competitors.
