[Display omitted] Energy consumption from air cooling systems in summer, water scarcity in hot regions, and the functional reusability of waste paper are emerging environmental problems. Finding solutions to these problems simultaneously remains a significant challenge. Herein, a superhydrophobic passive cooling Cellulose-CaCO 3 film with hierarchical nano-sheets was fabricated to realize daytime radiative cooling with a temperature drop of 15–20 °C in summer and water harvesting with harvesting efficiency of 387 mg cm−2h−1 bd utilization of recycled waste paper. The superhydrophobic Cellulose-CaCO 3 film demonstrates its self-cleaning properties against inorganic and organic pollutants. Furthermore, the superhydrophobicity of the film was maintained after base/acid corrosions, dynamic water flushing, and thermal treatment at 100 °C for 7 h, exhibiting good durability of the superhydrophobicity. Moreover, the superhydrophobic Cellulose-CaCO 3 film is nonflammable after exposure to fire combustion for 1 min. In addition to waste paper, waste maize straws, and pasteboards were also collected to produce superhydrophobic passive cooling films. Results indicate that the above three cellulose-based raw materials can be well used to prepare durable superhydrophobic passive cooling materials. Environmental toxicology assessments confirm the safety of the material. Many materials have been explored for the purpose of creating structures with high radiative cooling potential, such as nanocellulose-based structures and nanoparticle-based coatings, which have been reported with environmentally friendly attributes and high solar reflectance in current literature. They each have their own advantages and disadvantages in practice. It is worth noting that nanocellulose-based structures have an absorption peak in the UV wavelengths, which results in a lower total solar reflectance and, consequently, reduce radiative cooling capabilities. However, the interwoven-fiber structure of cellulose gives high mechanical strength, which promotes its application in different scenarios. The application of nanoplatelet-based coatings is limited due to the need for high volume of nanoparticles to reach their signature high solar reflectance. This requirement weakens the polymer matrix and results in more brittle structures. This work proposes a dual-layer system, comprising of a cellulose-based substrate as the bottom layer and a thin nanoparticle-based radiative cooling paint as the top layer, where both radiative cooling potential and mechanical strength can be maximized. Experimental and theoretical studies are conducted to investigate the relationship between thickness and reflectance in the top coating layer with a consistent thickness of the bottom layer. The saturation point is identified in this relationship and used to determine the optimal thickness for the top-layer to maximize material use efficiency. With the use of cotton paper painted with a 125 μm BaSO4-based layer, the cooling performance is enhanced to be 149.6 W/m2 achieved by the improved total solar reflectance from 80 % to 93 %. This short report added to the scientific debate regarding a controversial conclusion published in European Journal of Sport Science. Reasons for the conflicting views have been presented in detail. Importantly, updated evidence suggests that ingestion of ice slurry is an effective countermeasure for endurance performance in the heat. Endurance athletes competing in the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics are encouraged to continue utilizing this simple yet very effective method for best possible performance.

Among various factors influencing the service life of electrical equipment, the performance of dielectric insulation materials has an important role. Degradation of insulating materials caused by aging is fatal to insulation breakdown. The dielectric sheets of most conventional and high-temperature superconducting electrical equipment are working at tensile status when lapped on the conductor. Therefore, the study of the dielectric characteristic for insulation materials at aging and tensile status is very important to safely operate electrical equipment. In this paper, a special electrode system was designed to measure the breakdown voltages of polypropylene laminated paper, polyimide, and polytetrafluoroethylene sheets at tensile status both in normal environment and liquid nitrogen. Before the breakdown experiment, the specimens of the three materials all endured the aging process of abrupt temperature change. According to the test results and the Weibull plot analysis, the polyimide presents good dielectric strength at aging and tensile status both in normal environment and in liquid nitrogen. Oil soluble chemical markers such as methanol, ethanol and 2-furaldehyde for assessing the condition of insulating paper still present many challenges for an accurate interpretation in real transformers. Indeed, many conceptual parameters such as design (shell vs. core) or type of cooling are needed for a more accurate interpretation of the data. Moreover, similarly to water, the measured marker concentrations in oil are temperature-dependent, i.e. an existing partition phenomenon between the oil and the solid insulation modify the solubility of the markers, thus changing their apparent concentrations in the oil. Consequently, to follow the real trend of these species during the transformer?s service life, it is crucial to correct their concentrations at a specific temperature, as is done for the water content. Knowing these facts and in order to calibrate a predictive model, Hydro-Qu?bec decided to access equipment when dismantled, which enables a large amount of paper to be sampled from different sections of the windings. This allows for a more accurate representation of the transformer paper conditions in relation to transformer design. The paper condition obtained by measuring the degree of polymerization in accordance with the presence of chemical markers is a valuable process. We believe that it is possible to better understand the behavior of the paper insulation and to assess markers concentration thresholds using the oil analysis. Abstract: In this paper we study the heat transfer and fluid flow in a step-down 3-phase power transformer. In order to simplify the study we choose an element composed of two windings wound around a core. The Joule effect and the Foucault currents produce an undesirable heat in the different components of the transformer. From an economical and security point of view, there is a need to cool the transformer to preserve it from destruction. Our main objective is the cooling optimization of the power transformer. In order to attain this goal, a numerical study has been conducted for six different geometric configurations with six different flow rates of the cooling oil at the entrance. The physical properties of the fluid are supposed to be function of the temperature. The control volume method has been used to resolve the continuity, the momentum and the energy equations in the steady state. The obtained results show that the structure of the flow is somehow complex and according to the case some rolls appear at the top and the bottom of the windings, these rolls contribute to a good mixing of the fluid leading to a nearly homogeneous temperature. Subject to an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) with rigorously limited space and weight, the high-power-density propulsion motor urgently needs an efficient cooling method to improve reliability and stability. In this paper, a cooling improvement method based on heat bridges (HBs) is proposed for the shell-mounted propulsion motor (SmPM) of the AUVs. First, the electromagnetic and thermal characteristics of a 150 kW SmPM are analyzed using a numerical method. Then, a prototype was developed and tested to verify the accuracy of the numerical calculation. Subsequently, in order to further improve the cooling performance of the motor with minimal weight increment, this paper proposes HBs mounted on the end winding. The maximum winding temperature of the motor containing the proposed HBs is decreased by 20 K at the rated operation state. Based on the validated numerical method, the effects of topologies, materials, and geometric parameters on the cooling effect are investigated. Furthermore, according to the required operating time, the SmPM is optimized based on the cooling performance improvement provided by the proposed HBs. Adsorption cooling and desalination systems have a distinct advantage over other systems that use low‐grade waste heat near ambient temperature. Since improving their performance, including reliability and failure prediction, is challenging, developing an efficient diagnostic system is of great practical significance. The paper introduces artificial intelligence (AI) and an automated machine learning approach (AutoML) in a real‐life application for a computational diagnostic system of existing adsorption cooling and desalination facilities. A total of 1769 simulated data points containing data indicating a failure status are applied to develop a comprehensive AI‐based Diagnostic (AID) system covering a wide range of 42 input parameters. The paper introduces a conditional monitoring system for adsorption cooling and desalination systems. The novelty of the presented study mainly consists of two aspects. First, the intelligent system predicts the health or failure states of various components in a complex three‐bed adsorption chiller installation using the extensive input data sets of 42 different operating parameters. The developed AID expert tool, based on selecting the best from 42 models generated by the DataRobot platform, was validated on the complex, existing three‐bed adsorption chiller. The AID system correctly identified healthy and failure states in various installation components. The developed expert system is very efficient (AUC = 0.988, RMSE = 0.20, LogLoss = 0.14) in predicting emergency states. Rapid monsoon changes since the last deglaciation remain poorly constrained due to the scarcity of geological archives. Here we present a high-resolution scanning X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis of a 13.5 m terrace succession on the western Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) to infer rapid monsoon changes since the last deglaciation. Our results indicate that Rb/Sr and Zr/Rb are sensitive indicators of chemical weathering and wind sorting, respectively, which are further linked to the strength of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM). During the last deglaciation, two cold intervals of the Heinrich event 1 and Younger Dryas were characterized by intensified winter monsoon and weakened summer monsoon. The EAWM gradually weakened at the beginning of the Holocene, while the EASM remained steady till 9.9 ka and then grew stronger. Both the EASM and EAWM intensities were relatively weak during the Middle Holocene, indicating a mid-Holocene climatic optimum. Rb/Sr and Zr/Rb exhibit an antiphase relationship between the summer and winter monsoon changes on a centennial timescale during 16–1 ka. Comparison of these monsoon changes with solar activity and North Atlantic cooling events reveals that both factors can lead to abrupt changes on a centennial timescale in the Early Holocene. Scientific-grade cameras are frequently employed in industries such as spectral imaging technology, aircraft, medical detection, and astronomy, and are characterized by high precision, high quality, fast speed, and high sensitivity. Especially in the field of astronomy, obtaining information about faint light often requires long exposure with high-resolution cameras, which means that any external factors can cause the camera to become unstable and result in increased errors in the detection results. This paper aims to investigate the effect of displacement introduced by various vibration factors on the imaging of an astronomical camera during long exposure. The sources of vibration are divided into external vibration and internal vibration. External vibration mainly includes environmental vibration and resonance effects, while internal vibration mainly refers to the vibration caused by the force generated by the refrigeration module inside the camera during the working process of the camera. The cooling module is divided into water-cooled and air-cooled modes. Through the displacement and vibration experiments conducted on the camera, it is proven that the air-cooled mode will cause the camera to produce greater displacement changes relative to the water-cooled mode, leading to blurring of the imaging results and lowering the accuracy of astronomical detection. This paper compares the effects of displacement produced by two methods, fan cooling and water-circulation cooling, and proposes improvements to minimize the displacement variations in the camera and improve the imaging quality. This study provides a reference basis for the design of astronomical detection instruments and for determining the vibration source of cameras, which helps to promote the further development of astronomical detection. This paper was written to demonstrate the value of using nanofluids for cooling high power transformers while also providing current techniques for business and academia. A numerical analysis of the improvement caused by the cooling of a high voltage transformer using nanofluids has been done. A tank with a temperature source inside and a charge of mineral oil-barium titanate nanoparticles is used to study natural-convection. This study investigates the effects of variables on the thermal efficiency of the tank, including the thermal Rayleigh number and volume fraction. The results show that quenching varies with low and high Rayleigh thermal numbers and depends on the volume percentage of used nanoparticles. The effects were illustrated in thermal transfer rate representations as functions of the thermal Rayleigh number (Rat = 103 and 106) and the solid volume particle from the nanoparticles (0% = f < 10%). The findings showed that improving the solid volume particle of the nanoparticles by 10% causes the fluid being utilized to become more effectively conductive, which improves the rate of heat transfer by roughly 10% when compared to the case of the base fluid. To effectively reduce building energy consumption, a novel full fresh air system with a heat source tower (HST) and a borehole heat exchanger (BHE) was proposed for space cooling and dehumidification in this paper. The cooling system only adopts geothermal energy to produce dry and cold fresh air for space cooling and dehumidification through the BHE and HST, which has the advantage of non-condensate water compared to BHE systems integrated with a fan coil or chilled beam. Based on the established mathematical model of the cooling system, this paper analyzed the system characteristics, feasibility, operation strategy, energy performance, and cost-effectiveness of the proposed model in detail. The results show that the mathematical model has less than 10% error in estimating the system performance compared to the practical HST–BHE experimental set up. Under the specific boundary conditions, the cooling and dehumidification capacity of this system increases with the decrease in the air temperature, air moisture content, and inlet water temperature of the HST. The optimal cooling capacity and the system COP can be achieved when the air–water flow ratio is at 4:3. A case study was conducted in a residential building in Shenyang with an area of about 1800 m2. It was found that this system can fully meet the cooling and dehumidification demand in such a residential building. The operation strategy of the cooling system can be optimized by adjusting the air–water flow ratio from 4:3 to 3:2 during the early cooling season (7 June–1 July) and end cooling season (3 August–1 September). As a result, the average COP of the cooling system during the whole cooling season can be improved from 6.1 to 8.7. Compared with the air source heat pump (ASHP) and the ground source heat pump (GSHP) for space cooling, the proposed cooling system can achieve an energy saving rate of 123% and 26%, respectively. Considering that the BHE of the GSHP can be part of the proposed HST–BHE cooling system, the integration of the HST and GHSP for space cooling (and heating) is strongly recommended in actual applications. Film cooling technology is of great significance to enhance the performance of aero-engines and extend service life. With the increasing requirements for film cooling efficiency, researchers and engineers have carried out a lot of work on the precision and digital measurement of cooling holes. Based on the above, this paper outlines the importance and principles of film cooling technology and reviews the evolution of cooling holes. Also, this paper details the traditional measurement methods of the cooling hole used in current engineering scenarios with their limitations and categorizes digital measurement methods into five main types, including probing measurement technology, optical measurement technology, infrared imaging technology, computer tomography (CT) scanning technology, and composite measurement technology. The five types of methods and integrated automated measurement platforms are also analyzed. Finally, through a generalize and analysis of cooling hole measurement methods, this paper points out technical challenges and future trends, providing a reference and guidance for forward researches. The sCMOS imaging system with deep vacuum cooling technology has become a necessary way to improve the detection capability of space targets. In order to improve the detection capability of the photoelectric detection equipment for space targets, this paper developed the Highly Sensitive Deep Vacuum Cooling Imaging System (HSDVCIS). Firstly, we designed the imaging readout processing circuit using the GSENSE4040 sCMOS image sensor designed and manufactured by Gpixel and the deep vacuum cooling structure using thermoelectric cooling. Then, we tested the designed HSDVCIS with readout noise, dark current, and dynamic range of 3.96 e − , 0.12 e − /pixel/sec, and 84.49 dB, respectively, and tested the image sensor with a minimum cooling temperature of −40 °C. Finally, according to the results of observation experiments, we validated that the photoelectric detection equipment equipped with HSDVCIS improved the limiting detection magnitude (at SNR = 5 level) from 13.22 to 13.51 magnitudes within a 3 s exposure time by turning on the cooling function. Therefore, HSDVCIS designed in this paper can achieve highly sensitive detection of space targets. At the same time, the development of HSDVCIS also provides technical reserves and strong support for future research on the imaging systems using multiple image sensor mosaics. Grinding, a critical precision machining process for difficult-to-cut alloys, has undergone continual technological advancements to improve machining efficiency. However, the sustainability of this process is gaining heightened attention due to significant challenges associated with the substantial specific grinding energy and the extensive heat generated when working with difficult-to-cut alloys, renowned for their exceptional physical and mechanical properties. In response to these challenges, the widespread application of massive coolant in manufacturing industries to dissipate grinding heat has led to complex post-cleaning and disposal processes. This, in turn, has resulted in issues such as large energy consumption, a considerable carbon footprint, and concerns related to worker health and safety, which have become the main factors that restrict the development of grinding technology. This paper provides a holistic review of sustainability in grinding difficult-to-cut alloys, encompassing current trends and future directions. The examination extends to developing grinding technologies explicitly tailored for these alloys, comprehensively evaluating their sustainability performance. Additionally, the exploration delves into innovative sustainable technologies, such as heat pipe/oscillating heat pipe grinding wheels, minimum quantity lubrication, cryogenic cooling, and others. These groundbreaking technologies aim to reduce dependence on hazardous coolants, minimizing energy and resource consumption and carbon emissions associated with coolant-related or subsequent disposal processes. The essence of these technologies lies in their potential to revolutionize traditional grinding practices, presenting environmentally friendly alternatives. Finally, future development trends and research directions are put forward to pursue the current limitation of sustainable grinding for difficult-to-cut alloys. This paper can guide future research and development efforts toward more environmentally friendly grinding operations by understanding the current state of sustainable grinding and identifying emerging trends. Gallium oxide (Ga2O3) devices have shown remarkable potential for high-voltage, high-power, and low-loss power applications. However, thermal management of packaging for Ga2O3 devices becomes challenging due to the significant self-heating effect. In this paper, an advanced double-sided cooling flip-chip packaging structure for Ga2O3 devices was proposed and the overall packaging of Ga2O3 chips was researched by simulation in detail. The advanced double-sided cooling flip-chip packaging structure was formed by adding a layer of diamond material on top of the device based on the single-sided flip-chip structure. With a power density of 3.2 W/mm, it was observed that the maximum temperature of the Ga2O3 chip with the advanced double-sided cooling flip-chip packaging structure was 103 °C. Compared with traditional wire bonding packaging and single-sided cooling flip-chip packaging, the maximum temperature was reduced by about 12 °C and 7 °C, respectively. When the maximum temperature of the chip was controlled at 200 °C, the Ga2O3 chip with double-sided cooling packaging could reach a power density of 6.8 W/mm. Finally, by equipping the top of the package with additional water-cooling equipment, the maximum temperature was reduced to 186 °C. These findings highlight the effectiveness of the proposed flip-chip design with double-sided cooling in enhancing the heat dissipation capability of Ga2O3 chips, suggesting promising prospects for this advanced packaging structure. The world is warming, and the demand for cooling is increasing. Developing a future green hydrogen economy will also increase the demand for cooling for hydrogen liquefaction. This increase in cooling demand will happen mainly in tropical and developing countries due to their increase in population, improvements in quality of life, and the export of their renewable potential with liquid hydrogen. To solve this increase in demand for cooling, this paper proposes the use of ammonia airship cooling (AAC). AAC extracts cold from the tropopause (−80 °C) with airships and ammonia refrigeration cycles. The liquid ammonia is then transported back to the surface to provide low temperature cooling services (−33 °C). This cooling service is particularly interesting for lowering the electricity consumption in hydrogen liquefaction plants. If all the technological challenges mentioned in the paper are addressed, it is estimated that the cost of cooling with the technology is 8.25 USD/MWht and that AAC could reduce the electricity demand for hydrogen liquefaction by 30%. Gravity-assisted separation heat pipes (GSHPs) are extensively utilized in telecommunications base stations and data centers. To ensure year-round cooling, integrating GSHPs directly with a vapor compression refrigeration system is a viable solution. It is unavoidable that the refrigeration system's lubricant will infiltrate the heat pipe loop, thereby affecting its thermal performance. This paper examines the performance of a GSHP, which features a water-cooled plate heat exchanger as the condenser and a finned-tube heat exchanger as the evaporator, when the working fluid (R134a) is contaminated with a lubricant (POE, Emkarate RL-46H). The findings are compared with those from a system free of lubricant. The experimental outcomes indicate that the presence of lubricant degrades the heat transfer efficiency, particularly when the filling ratio is adequate and no significant superheat is observed at the evaporator's outlet. This results in a 3.86% increase in heat transfer resistance. When the charge of the working fluid is suboptimal, the average heat transfer resistance remains relatively constant at a 3% lubricant concentration yet increases to approximately 5.27% at a 4–6% lubricant concentration, and further to 12.32% at a 9% lubricant concentration. Concurrently, as the lubricant concentration fluctuates between 3% and 9%, the oil circulation ratio (OCR) varies from 0.02% to 0.11%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cu isotope ratios have been widely applied to fingerprinting metal sources, tracking fluid pathways, and tracing mineralization processes, for which knowledge of isotope fractionation is required. This paper presents new experimental calibration data of Cu isotope fractionation between Cu-bearing minerals (native Cu and cuprite) and Cl-bearing hydrothermal fluids at 25–800 °C and 0.1–200 MPa. The experiments were performed either using a polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon) beaker on a hotplate, a rapid heat/rapid quench argon cold seal pressure vessel (RH/RQ Ar-CSPV), or a large volume fluid reactor, which enabled fluid sampling ex situ (the former two) and in situ (the latter). Three setups were designed to investigate Cu isotope fractionation (Δ65Cufluid-mineral): (1) associated with Cu(I) dissolution, Cu(I) disproportionation as well as oxidation of Cu(0) (native copper) and Cu(I) in Cu ± Cu2O + HCl systems at temperatures of up to 800 °C and pressures of up to 200 MPa; (2) related to Cu-Au alloying processes in the Cu + NaCl/HCl system at 600 °C and 150 MPa; (3) to evaluate the influences of different sampling techniques (ex situ vs. in situ) and superimposed cooling processes. The selected system is Cu2O + NaCl + 0.2 m HAc/NaAc (pH-buffer), and runs were conducted at 200–250 °C and 20 MPa. Δ65Cufluid-mineral shows the least variation during solid separation from source fluids, generally <0.16 ± 0.03‰. Positive Δ65Cufluid-mineral values are found in most runs, excluding cuprite dissolution in NaCl/ HCl solutions at 200–250 °C, 20 MPa, and 800 °C, 200 MPa. Cu oxidative leaching into Cu(I) results in decreasing Δ65CuCu(I)-Cu(0) values from 0.12 ± 0.05% to 0.07 ± 0.05%, and –0.30 ± 0.03‰ at 25, 50, and 200 °C, respectively. In contrast, Cu dissolution at high temperatures (600–800 °C) leads to Cu(I)-containing quench fluids and subsequent native Cu precipitates. Both products are enriched in heavy isotopes by up to 5‰, caused by preferential enrichment of 65Cu at the surface layer during the alloying-induced diffusion transport process. Cuprite oxidative leaching in HCl leads to fluids enriched in Cu(II), and the corresponding Δ65CuCu(II)-Cu(I) increases from 0.52 ± 0.04‰ at 25 °C to 0.89 ± 0.02‰ at 50 °C. Fluids are enriched with light isotopes (63Cu) during cuprite dissolution at 200, 250, and 800 °C, i.e., 0–0.55 ± 0.04‰ lower than the precursor. At 250–300 °C, Cu(I) disproportionation into Cu(II) and Cu(0) dominates the observed isotope fractionation, yielding Δ65Cufluid-Cu2O up to 0.59 ± 0.03‰ and Δ65CuCu(0)-Cu2O up to –0.28 ± 0.02‰. Rapid cooling (3–25 K s–1) relative to slow cooling (0.014 K s–1) can cause phase separation as well as significant isotope fractionation, particularly if fluids cool from an intermediate high temperature to ambient temperature (e.g., from 200–300 to 25 °C), which highlights the importance of kinetic processes that may potentially alter the isotope composition of natural ore-forming fluids. High temperatures have dramatic negative effects on interconnect performance. In a bus, whenever the state transitions from "0" to "1", or "0" to "1", joule heating causes the temperature to rise. A low-power error-correcting cooling (LPECC) code, introduced in Chee et al. (IEEE Trans Inf Theory 64:3062–3085, 2018), is a coding scheme which can be used to control the peak temperature, the average power consumption of on-chip buses and error-correction for the transmitted information, simultaneously. Time series of radiative cooling of the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere (UMLT) by carbon dioxide (CO2) are examined for evidence of trends over 20 years. Radiative cooling rates in K day−1 provided by the SABER instrument are converted to time series of infrared power radiated from three distinct layers between 0.1 hPa and 0.0001 hPa (65–105 km). Linear regression against time and a predictor for solar variability provides estimates of the trend in exiting longwave radiation (ELR) from these layers. Trends in ELR are not significantly different from zero at 95% or 99% confidence in each layer. These results demonstrate energy conservation in the UMLT on decadal time scales and show that the UMLT continues to radiate the same amount of energy it receives despite cooling and contracting over two decades. These results are enabled by the long‐term stability of the SABER instrument calibration. Plain Language Summary: The Earth's upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere (UMLT) is the region between approximately 65 and 105 km in altitude. Infrared radiation emitted by CO2 is a fundamental component of the energy budget of the UMLT. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is increasing in this region. The amount of infrared energy emitted by CO2, over time, must balance the amount of energy from sunlight that is absorbed in the UMLT. Observations from orbiting satellites over the past two decades have shown that the temperature in the UMLT is decreasing due to the increasing CO2. A decreasing temperature implies a decrease in infrared energy emitted by an object. Energy conservation, however, requires that the amount of infrared energy radiated from the UMLT balance the amount of energy received, regardless of the temperature. In this paper we show that there is no significant long‐term change with time (i.e., zero trend) in the infrared energy emitted from the UMLT even though the UMLT temperature has been decreasing for the last 20 years (and longer) due to increasing CO2. This result confirms that energy is conserved in a cooling and contracting UMLT. The development of new and more effective cooling technologies is required for several high thermal power dissipation applications such as in electronics cooling or high concentrated photovoltaic panels. The present paper addresses an experimental study on the development of a microchannel based heat sink to cool photovoltaic panels. Experiments focus on the test of a microchannel, with geometry and dimensions optimized from previous work. The analysis performed here emphasizes the experimental characterization of flow boiling in the microchannel under different working conditions. The results include pressure drop and heat flux maps, obtained combining pressure sensors with high-speed imaging and time resolved thermography. The analysis performed was able to identify where nucleation sites were formed. Slug flow interfacial heat transfer could be observed and accurately described in the heat flux maps. Overall, results show the high potential of combining high-speed imaging with time resolved infrared thermography to characterize complex flows. These results also show that there is a good potential for this microchannel based flow cooling in removing the required heat fluxes for the application considered here, when compared to other liquid and air-cooling technologies. Transformer efficiency is a key concern for both transformer operators and regulators, particularly with regards to new transformers. Cooling is a critical factor in preventing overheating and controlling the ageing of transformer insulation. This paper aims to analyse how different cooling setups can influence efficiency. Transformer losses depend on the winding temperature, which is affected by load, ambient temperature, and cooling power. In this study, we will take all of these factors into consideration to examine their impact on transformer losses. Using a 520 MVA transformer as an example, we will calculate the loss levels under different realistic ambient temperature and load profiles. We will also apply different cooling system settings to determine the optimization possibilities. Our calculations will consider different turn-on temperatures of the fans and cooling stages and will use steady state calculations over a period of 12 months. Additionally, a novel approach to control cooling by using the loading of the transformer is present, as are the possibilities of using variable speed fans. Finally, we will estimate the influence of cooling settings on transformer ageing by examining their impact on temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An axial-flow cooling fan was taken as the research object in this paper, and a certain number of simulation models with different blade-guiding fin shapes were established. The methods of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), circumferential vorticity (CV) analysis and the response surface method (RSM) based on the design of experiments (DOE) method were all employed. The main external flow characteristics of the cooling fan, the blade surface pressure distribution, the static pressure efficiency and the fan power were obtained and compared. The relationships between the pneumatic performance and the fin shape parameters were subsequently investigated by the DOE method. The results obtained in this paper showed that a change in the fin height had a great influence on the pneumatic performance, while changes in its thickness had less of an influence. For the cooling fan studied in this paper, by adding reasonable structure-guiding fins onto the cooling fan blade, the static pressure efficiency was increased by a maximum of 7.6%. Earth–air heat exchangers (EAHX) use the soil thermal capacity to dampen the amplitude of outdoor air temperature oscillations. This effect can be used in hot and dry climates for room cooling, and depending on the EAHX design, this cooling can be achieved with very few resources other than those used during EAHX construction. This is an obvious advantage compared to the significant energy consumption and operational costs of refrigeration machines traditionally used in room cooling. Despite the large number of papers on EAHXs available in the scientific literature, very few deal with large-diameter EAHXs (with pipe diameters larger than 0.30 m), and even fewer present monitoring data gathered from a built and functional large-diameter EAHX. The present paper uses monitoring data and provides a detailed quantitative analysis of the performance of a large-diameter EAHX built for standalone cooling of an existing office building. The field monitoring was carried out during a characteristic hot and dry summer period of the south of Portugal. Results show that outdoor air to EAHX exit air temperature gradients reach 9 K and cooling capacities exceed 27 kW. Moreover, the studied EAHX is capable of standalone cooling for outdoor air temperatures up to 33 °C and meets more than 50% of the room design cooling demand for outdoor air temperatures as high as 37 °C. This evidences that large-diameter EAHXs have the potential to achieve significant reductions in CO 2 emissions and in energy consumption associated with building cooling in hot and dry climates. This paper presents a detailed literature review on the thermal management issue faced by electronic devices, particularly concerning uneven heating and overheating problems. Special focus is given to the design and structural optimization of heat sinks for efficient single-phase liquid cooling. Firstly, the paper highlights the common presence and detrimental consequences of electronics overheating resulting from multiple heat sources, supported by various illustrative examples. Subsequently, the emphasis is placed on single-phase liquid cooling as one of the effective thermal management technologies for power electronics, as well as on the enhancement of heat transfer in micro/mini channel heat sinks. Various studies on the design and structural optimization of heat sinks are then analyzed and categorized into five main areas: (1) optimization of channel cross-section shape, (2) optimization of channel flow passage, (3) flow distribution optimization for parallel straight channel heat sinks, (4) optimization of pin-fin shape and arrangement, and (5) topology optimization of global flow configuration. After presenting a broad and complete overview of the state of the art, the paper concludes with a critical analysis of the methods and results from the literature and highlights the research perspectives and challenges in the field. It is shown that the issue of uneven and overheating caused by multiple heat sources, which is commonly observed in modern electronics, has received less attention in the literature compared to uniform or single-peak heating. While several design and structural optimization techniques have been implemented to enhance the cooling performance of heat sinks, topology optimization has experienced significant advancements in recent years and appears to be the most promising technology due to its highest degree of freedom to treat the uneven heating problem.
