We herein review the use of electrocochleography (ECoG) to assess peripheral auditory system responsiveness in a growing population of cochlear implant (CI) users with preserved hearing in ears with implants. Twenty-eight recently published intracochlear ECoG articles were thoroughly reviewed to investigate the prognostic utility of intraoperative ECoG monitoring to assess hearing preservation, and the clinical applicability of postoperative ECoG for estimating audiometric thresholds and monitoring longitudinal changes in residual acoustic hearing in patients with EAS. Intraoperative ECoG studies have focused on monitoring the changes in the cochlear microphonics (CM) amplitudes during and after electrode insertion. Mixed results have been reported regarding the relationship between changes in CM amplitude in the operating room and changes in hearing thresholds after surgery. Postoperative ECoG studies have shown that CM and auditory nerve neurophonics thresholds correlate significantly with behavioral thresholds. ECoG thresholds sensitively detect changes as residual acoustic hearing decreases over time in some CI users. This indicates its potential clinical value for monitoring the post-implantation status of the peripheral auditory system. Sound zones are used to reproduce individual audio content to multiple people in a room using a set of loudspeakers with controllable input signals. To allow the reproduction of individual audio to dynamically change, e.g., due to moving listeners, changes in the number of listeners, or changing room transfer functions, an adaptive formulation is proposed. This formulation is based on frequency domain block adaptive filters and given room transfer functions. To reduce computational complexity, the system is extended to subband processing without cross-adaptive filters. The computational savings come from recognizing that sound zones consist of part-solutions which are inherently band limited, hence, several subbands can be ignored. To validate the theoretical findings, a 27-channel loudspeaker array was constructed, and measurements were performed in anechoic and reflective environments. This paper proposed to use the impinging jets mixing process to improve the quality of residential heating and air conditioning. The main objective is to meet the requirements of occupants in terms of thermal comfort and air quality by proposing an optimal solution for the thermal homogenization improvement in the rooms by changing of the diffusers geometry and their arrangement in the ventilation and air-conditioning devices in blowing systems. This study involves both experimental and numerical studies of a three diffusers configurations composed of four peripheral jet with similar geometries and a central jet with a different geometry. All the configurations consist of four equidistant peripheral swirling jets, only the central jet that makes the difference between them. The configuration 1 includes a swirling central jet, on the other hand a circular central jet for the configuration 2 and finally a lobed central jet for configuration 3. The velocity and temperature distributions of the three configurations are investigated experimentally and numerically. Experimentally, the multifunction thermo-anemometer have been used to measure flow temperature and velocity. The dynamic and temperature features are more radially spread and get better homogeneity in configuration 3 and this is due to the energy distribution on the radial plane, which is relatively better than configuration 1 and configuration 2. The second part deals with numerical predictions of the dynamics and thermal fields of the three configurations considered. The study was realized using a RANS-based turbulence model. The numerical results are in reasonable agreement with our experiments for the three configurations. With this study, detailed information on the structure of the resulting flow is very useful to deepen the understanding of the physics of jet interaction and to validate turbulence models. The turbulence simulation is realized by the k-ω-SST model. This model gives a satisfactorily predicts the axial drop in velocity and temperature over the entire study range, demonstrating its ability to handle the interaction between swirling and lobe jets. Our results show that the geometry of the central diffuser is essential. This allows the axial velocity to decrease faster than configurations 1 and 2. Transgender individuals face stigma, discrimination, and other barriers impacting their ability to engage in physical activity (PA). We aim to review current literature on PA among transgender individuals. A systemic literature search of research studies from 2010–2023 was conducted. Studies must have reported a measure of PA and gender, be original research, and focus on transgender participants' PA. Rates of PA for transgender individuals were lower compared to cisgender or sexual minority individuals. Transgender women were less likely to engage in PA than other groups. Qualitative results suggest transgender oppression, stigma, discrimination, body image, unwelcoming environments (gyms, locker rooms, swimming pools), and the dichotomous structure of sport contribute to lower rates of PA among transgendered individuals. Disparities in PA for transgender individuals exist. Policy, environment, and system changes are needed to reduce transgender stigma in sport and PA settings. Current legislation is being developed and implemented in the United States regarding the place of transgender individuals in sport and PA. These results should inform public discourse on the topic. Background: As developing countries take steps towards providing universal essential surgery, ensuring the equitable distribution of such care for underrepresented populations is a vital function of the global surgery community. Unfortunately, in the context of the global "stateless", there remains much room for improvement. Key issues: Inherent structural deficiencies, such as lack of adequate population data on stateless communities, absent health coverage policies for stateless individuals, and minimal patient-reported qualitative data on barriers to surgical service delivery prevent stateless individuals from receiving the care they require – even when healthcare infrastructure to provide such care exists. The authors therefore propose more research and targeted interventions to address the systemic issues that prevent stateless individuals from accessing surgical care. Conclusion: It is essential to address the aforementioned barriers in order to improve stateless populations' access to surgical care. Ni–Mn-based Heusler alloys are known to demonstrate magnetic shape memory and giant magnetocaloric effect (MCE). These effects depend on the phases, crystallographic and magnetic phase transitions, and the crystallographic texture characteristics. These structural characteristics, in turn, are a function of the processing parameters. In the current work, Ni55.5Mn18.8Ga24Si1.7 Heusler alloy was processed by melt-spinning under a helium atmosphere. This process results in a fine microstructure. The ribbon that was produced with a narrower nozzle width, faster wheel speed, and higher cast temperature, indicating a faster cooling rate, had double the magnetic entropy change close to room temperature. However, the other ribbon demonstrated a large entropy change over a broader temperature range, extending its usability. The effect of the melt-spinning process parameters on the developing microstructure, crystallographic structure and texture, transformation temperatures, and the magnetic entropy change were studied to explain the difference in magnetocaloric behavior. The efficient use of our existing energy resources is as important as finding new energy sources, since the demand for energy is increasing day by day. Heating and cooling loads in buildings constitute a large part of energy consumption. Therefore, it is very important to improve the energy performance of buildings. The utilization of phase change materials to increase the energy efficiency of buildings is one of the recent research topics. In this study, the effect of phase change materials on room temperature for winter and summer months was investigated numerically by defining real environmental conditions in the virtual environment. Phase change material with thermophysical properties suitable for Mediterranean climate conditions was selected for summer and winter. It can keep the room temperature at a slightly lower level during the daytime in summer and the room temperature higher in winter than in the insulated state case. As a result, phase change materials can be used as a natural air conditioner in the summer, as well as a natural heater at night in the winter. Sitting work posture is often used in office work. Work position failures when sitting can cause Musculoskeletal Disorders. Therefore, ergonomists are necessary for the workplace to assist workers' posture. However, these needs cannot be met due to the limited number of ergonomists and costs. So a practical and inexpensive semi-automatic application is needed. One method for assessing upper body work posture is RULA. This study aims to develop a posture assessment application for sitting work and suggest improvement. In addition, the effect of changes in room brightness, the variability of chair height, and types of office-work tasks were explored in this study to determine the accuracy level of the depth camera to measure the worker's posture. Research design uses empirical research with independent variables: room illuminance, chair height, and four types of office-work tasks. The two levels of room illuminance are 32 lux and 60 lux; the seat height consists of three levels, i.e., 40, 45, and 50cm, while four types of tasks include writing, typing, writing with a cheat sheet, and typing with a cheat sheet beside the Subject. The experiment tests the difference between the application's RULA estimation results and the ergonomist's RULA value. The experiment results showed that the proposed application successfully assessed RULA with the same results as the calculations by the ergonomist. This study makes posture assessment easier for sitting work and provides suggestions for posture improvement. Background: Falls are a common, costly global public health burden. In hospitals, multifactorial fall prevention programs have proved effective in reducing falls' incidence; however, translating those programs accurately into daily clinical practice remains challenging. This study's aim was to identify ward-level system factors associated with implementation fidelity to a multifactorial fall prevention program (StuPA) targeting hospitalized adult patients in an acute care setting. Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study used administrative data on 11,827 patients admitted between July and December 2019 to 19 acute care wards at the University Hospital Basel, Switzerland, as well as data on the StuPA implementation evaluation survey conducted in April 2019. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's coefficients and linear regression modelling for variables of interest. Results: The patient sample had an average age of 68 years and a median length of stay of 8.4 (IQR: 2.1) days. The mean care dependency score was 35.4 points (ePA-AC scale: from 10 points (totally dependent) to 40 points (totally independent)); the mean number of transfers per patient -(e.g., change of room, admission, discharge) was 2.6 (range: 2.4– 2.8). Overall, 336 patients (2.8%) experienced at least one fall, resulting in a rate of 5.1 falls per 1'000 patient days. The median inter-ward StuPA implementation fidelity was 80.6% (range: 63.9–91.7%). We found the mean number of inpatient transfers during hospitalisation and the mean ward-level patient care dependency to be statistically significant predictors of StuPA implementation fidelity. Conclusion: Wards with higher care dependency and patient transfer levels showed higher implementation fidelity to the fall prevention program. Therefore, we assume that patients with the highest fall prevention needs received greater exposure to the program. For the StuPA fall prevention program, our results suggest a need for implementation strategies contextually adapted to the specific characteristics of the target wards and patients. Background: The Creighton Model is a standardized method of observation based on a couple's knowledge and understanding of the natural processes of the times of fertility and infertility, as well as health indicators. The affliction of infertility is a significant problem and a challenge for modern medicine. There is a need for targeted activities that could provide education in the field of prophylaxis and teach patients how to make procreative decisions. These activities could be undertaken by midwives. Aim of the study: To introduce the Creighton Model as a tool for monitoring a woman's health and fertility during meetings between infertile couples and midwives, who play a crucial role in emotionally and educationally supporting women and their partners and creating safe conditions for couples during obstetric consultations. Case report: The patient was a 41-year-old woman who was being treated for infertility for eight years. She has numerous diseases, has undergone several gynecological procedures and operations, and is under constant specialist medical care. Due to a desire to get pregnant, she and her husband follow the recommended treatment, have regular intercourse, and remain in an exclusive relationship. Conclusions: Use of the Creighton Model can detect abnormalities in the functioning of the body and then treat them. The process of infertility treatment using NaProTechnology includes methods recommended by PTM RiE and SPiN PTGP. Many factors affect the health and fertility of women and couples. Attention should be paid to applying a holistic approach to the patient. The role and presence of the midwife in diagnosis and treatment throughout the infertility process is currently insufficient, and there is room for change. Parameters often take key roles in determining the accuracy of algorithms, logics, and models for practical applications. Previously, we have proposed a general-purpose parameter optimization algorithm, and studied its applications in various practical problems. This algorithm optimizes the parameter values by repeating small changes of them based on a local search method with hill-climbing capabilities. In this paper, we present three diverse applications of this algorithm to show the versatility and effectiveness. The first application is the fingerprint-based indoor localization system using IEEE802.15.4 devices called FILS15.4 that can detect the location of a user in an indoor environment. It is shown that the number of fingerprints for each detection point, the fingerprint values, and the detection interval are optimized together, and the average detection accuracy exceeds 99 % . The second application is the human face contour approximation model that is described by a combination of half circles, line segments, and a quadratic curve. It is shown that the simple functions can well approximate the face contour of various persons by optimizing the center coordinates, radii, and coefficients. The third application is the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation to estimate temperature changes in a room. It is shown that the thermal conductivity is optimized to make the average temperature difference between the estimated and measured 0.22 ∘ C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The negative impact of indoor formaldehyde pollution has become a growing interest, especially in severe cold areas, since most residential buildings do not have enough ventilation and people are unwilling to open windows. In order to explore the status and the influencing factors of indoor formaldehyde pollution in severe cold areas and predict the formaldehyde concentrations in these areas, a study of 60 residential buildings in Liaoning, China, was carried out using the method of phenol reagent spectrophotometry. While testing the formaldehyde concentration, the infiltration air change rate of the room was also tested using CO2 as a tracer gas. The correlation between formaldehyde concentration and its influencing factors was analyzed by SPSS software. Multiple linear regression equations were established for the linear regression analysis. The measured data were used to assess the formaldehyde cancer risk of residents in Liaoning. The test results showed that the most serious rates of average formaldehyde pollution occurred in summer with a concentration of 0.097 mg/m3, and the bedroom was the room most seriously polluted by formaldehyde in autumn with a concentration of 0.104 mg/m3. According to the correlation analysis, the formaldehyde concentration was significantly correlated with the indoor temperature, years of decoration, and the infiltration ventilation rate. The linear regression equation for predicting the formaldehyde concentration was established. The urgent need for reducing greenhouse gasses leads to the search for better alternatives that do not compromise the environment. Traditional refrigeration devices, for example, use harmful gasses as refrigerants and consume a lot of energy worldwide. Solid-state cooling devices based on mechanocaloric effects can be a better alternative that uses sustainable and eco-friendly materials with the potential to be more energy-efficient. Here, we study the compressive mechanocaloric effect in agglomerated cork: a natural, renewable, and sustainable material that has been used for centuries. We report giant values of entropy and temperature changes around room temperature, which peaks at the phase transition of suberin, a major component of cork. The structural and dielectric properties of Gadolinium substituted U-type hexaferrites (Sr 4 Zn 2 Fe 36 O60) were investigated. The samples were synthesized via the Sol-gel auto combustion route. In a muffle furnace, these samples were sintered for 5 h at 1250 °C. The pellets of synthesized powder samples were characterized by XRD, PL, Dielectric, FTIR, and Raman spectroscopies. Structural elucidation of Sr 4 Zn 2 Fe 36-x Gd x O 60 was done via XRD. The obtained XRD patterns were matched with the prior literature. The impact of Gd3+ substitutions was measured on all the lattice parameters. Lattice constants "a" and "c" were found between 5.871 and 5.900 Å and 111.76–112.23 Å, respectively. The PL spectra of Sr 4 Zn 2 Fe 36-x Gd x O 60 demonstrated multiple emissions in the range of 630 nm–700 nm, and by analyzing PL spectroscopic results, a bandgap of 1.8742 eV was found for the un-doped sample. Many dielectric parameters, i.e., Dielectric constant (ε'), Dielectric losses (ε''), Loss tangents (tanδ), Complex electric modulus (M' & M″), and A.C conductivity (σ ac) were investigated at room temperature by changing the frequencies from 1 GHz to 6 GHz. The varying trends of dielectric parameters were analyzed with the assistance of the Maxwell-Wagner model. Various absorption bands were observed in the range of 500–4000 cm−1 by plotting the FTIR spectroscopic results of Sr 4 Zn 2 Fe 36-x Gd x O 60. Raman spectra demonstrated a combination of strong and fragile peaks in 1–1800 cm−1. The present study aimed to provide a qualitative analysis of the racist incidents of in international cricket, as reported by online and offline newspapers. Website blogs and journal articles were reviewed for a better understanding of the issue. The study highlights the nature and the forms of racism levied against the recipients. It highlights the players' experiences of racism as reported by the different reliable media sources and examines the marginalization from the recipient's perspective. The study revealed that the racist behaviour is usually directed towards the people of colour, and the people belonging to different ethnicities, religious groups and nationalities. Racism prevails on the cricket field and outside-in dressing rooms, locker rooms, cricket clubs etc. Some racial incidents that occurred in IC were of implicit racial bias and unconscious racism. From Krom Hendricks racial segregation to Azeem Rafiq's accusation of 'institutional racism' racism is still a pervasive problem in the IC. Although ICC and various national cricket boards have formulated and reinforced anti-racist laws yet more stringent enforcement is required to counter the blatant and subtle forms of racism including racial slurs, banters and casual racism. Every day, a large number of patients visit the facility, creating a serious infectious transmission problem that might infect patients with respiratory infectious illnesses in outpatient rooms, putting their health at risk. TB, COVID-19, MERS, and SARS are all significant infectious diseases that are transmitted by the air or aerosol via coughing, spitting, sneezing, speaking, or wounds. COVID-19, tuberculosis, MERS, and SARS are all hazards, and the probability of a serious disease increasing the number of people admitted to the hospital. We should also be informed about how patients in the outpatient room are managed. When the number of patients in each room changes over time, it is challenging to measure and manage carbon dioxide in a hospital with a ventilation system. We should also be informed about the management of patients with these conditions. This research investigates the mathematical modeling of carbon dioxide concentration measurement and the risk assessment of airborne infection in an outpatient room with a ventilation system, while the number of patients in each room changes over time. As a result, efficient air quality monitoring, such as carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations, is required to monitor and decrease the possibility of contaminated air. It is indeed difficult to measure and manage carbon dioxide in a hospital with a ventilation system when the number of patients in each room changes over time. This research provided a risk model of airborne transmission and vaccination effectiveness in an outpatient room with a ventilation system. When the number of people and the rate of ventilation change, the model modifies the carbon dioxide concentration. To approximate the model solution, the fourth-order Runge-Kutta technique is used. In the presented simulations, there are several scenarios for improving air quality. The proposed approach balances the number of people allowed to stay in the room with the capacity of the air ventilation system in the air quality management process. As can be seen, the risk of infection is dependent on the number of people present, the rate of ventilation, and the efficacy of each type of vaccination. The siphonaxanthin-siphonein-Chl-a/b-protein (SCP) is the light-harvesting complex of the marine alga Codium fragile. Its structure resembles that of the major light-harvesting complexes of higher plants, LHC II, yet it features a reversed Chl a:Chl b ratio and it accommodates other variants of carotenoids. We have recorded the fluorescence emission spectra and fluorescence lifetimes from ensembles and single SCP complexes for three different scenarios of handling the samples. While the data obtained from ensembles of SCP complexes yield equivalent results, those obtained from single SCP complexes featured significant differences as a function of the sample history. We ascribe this discrepancy to the different excitation intensities that have been used for ensemble and single complex spectroscopy, and conclude that the SCP complexes undergo an aging process during storage. This process is manifested as a lowering of energetic barriers within the protein, enabling thermal activation of conformational changes at room temperature. This in turn leads to the preferential population of a red-shifted state that features a significant decrease of the fluorescence lifetime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Health care workers (HCWs) are particularly exposed to COVID-19 and therefore it is important to study preventive measures in this population. Aim: To investigate socio-demographic factors and professional practice associated with the risk of COVID-19 among HCWs in health establishments in Normandy, France. Methods: A cross-sectional and 3 case-control studies using bootstrap methods were conducted in order to explore the possible risk factors that lead to SARS-CoV2 transmission within HCWs. Case-control studies focused on risk factors associated with (a) care of COVID-19 patients, (b) care of non COVID-19 patients and (c) contacts between colleagues. Participants: 2,058 respondents, respectively 1,363 (66.2%) and 695 (33.8%) in medical and medico-social establishments, including HCW with and without contact with patients. Results: 301 participants (14.6%) reported having been infected by SARS-CoV2. When caring for COVID-19 patients, HCWs who declared wearing respirators, either for all patient care (ORa 0.39; 95% CI: 0.29–0.51) or only when exposed to aerosol-generating procedures (ORa 0.56; 95% CI: 0.43–0.70), had a lower risk of infection compared with HCWs who declared wearing mainly surgical masks. During care of non COVID-19 patients, wearing mainly a respirator was associated with a higher risk of infection (ORa 1.84; 95% CI: 1.06–3.37). An increased risk was also found for HCWs who changed uniform in workplace changing rooms (ORa 1.93; 95% CI: 1.63–2.29). Residents themselves are responsible for controlling their living environment, and their perception of coldness is important to protect their health. Although previous studies examined the association between perceived coldness and indoor temperature, they did not consider the spatial–temporal differences in indoor temperatures. This study, conducted in Japan, measured indoor temperatures in 1,553 houses across several rooms (living room, changing room, and bedroom) and heights (at 1 m above the floor and near the floor) over two weeks and obtained the perceived coldness from 2,793 participants during winter. Results showed substantial temperature differences between rooms (horizontal differences): 3.8 °C between living and changing rooms, and 4.1 °C between living rooms and bedrooms. The average vertical and diel (evening-morning) temperature differences in the living room were 3.1 °C and 3.0 °C, respectively. Regional analysis revealed that the Tohoku region experienced larger horizontal and diel indoor temperature differences, primarily due to its practice of intermittent and partial heating in living rooms only, in contrast to Hokkaido's approach of heating the entire house continuously. Despite Hokkaido's comprehensive heating system, it exhibited the largest vertical temperature difference of 5.1 °C in living rooms, highlighting the insufficiency of heating alone and the necessity for enhanced thermal insulation. The multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that average temperatures and vertical temperature differences were associated with perceived coldness, while horizontal and diel differences did not show a significant association, further emphasizing the importance of improved thermal insulation. Moreover, factors like individual attributes (age and gender), and lifestyle choices (meal quantity, exercise habits, alcohol consumption, and clothing amount) were significantly associated with coldness perception. Notably, older adults were less likely to perceive coldness but more vulnerable to the health impacts of low temperatures, underscoring the necessity of not solely relying on human perception for indoor temperature management to protect cold-related health problems. The potentiality of native Trichoderma harzianum against damping off and foot rot of chilli caused by Sclerotium rolfsii and Fusarium oxysporum, respectively as well as its shelf life as formulated product in different storage conditions was evaluated. In dual culture, native T. harzianum inhibited the mycelial growth of S. rolfsii by 60.56% and F. oxysporum by 81.67% over control. In green house conditions, soil received both formulated T. harzianum (20 g/kg of soil) and T. harzianum suspension (2.45 x 107 CFU/mL) resulted reduced severity of damping off by 81.80% and foot rot by 84.61% over control; however, the combined application of both the treatments was also resulted the highest seed germination (70.28%). The formulated T. harzianum (@ 50 g/polyethylene bags) was stored in table top, wooden shelve, tin container, wooden locker at room temperature, and in refrigerator at 4 °C. The spore density was constantly increased from the initial amount (22 x 106 CFU/g) in all the treatments and reached the peak after 45 days in wooden locker (73 x 106 CFU/g) and tin container (66 x 106 CFU/g) where, it reached the peak at 60 days in table top (126.3 x 106 CFU/g), wooden shelve (109 x 106 CFU/g) and refrigerator (89.67 x 106CFU/g). However, the maximum population density (126.3 x 106 CFU/g) was observed in table top storage at 60 days which also remained highest even after 120 days (51.67 x 106 CFU/g) in comparison to other treatments. The findings of the study revealed that the native T. harzianum can be exploited as an effective bio-control agent for the successful disease control program in chilli as it showed extended shelf life in common storage facility.
