Migrasomes are recently discovered organelles, which are formed on the ends or branch points of retraction fibers at the trailing edge of migrating cells. Previously, we showed that recruitment of integrins to the site of migrasome formation is essential for migrasome biogenesis. In this study, we found that prior to migrasome formation, PIP5K1A, a PI4P kinase which converts PI4P into PI(4,5)P2, is recruited to migrasome formation sites. The recruitment of PIP5K1A results in generation of PI(4,5)P2 at the migrasome formation site. Once accumulated, PI(4,5)P2 recruits Rab35 to the migrasome formation site by interacting with the C-terminal polybasic cluster of Rab35. We further demonstrated that active Rab35 promotes migrasome formation by recruiting and concentrating integrin α5 at migrasome formation sites, which is likely mediated by the interaction between integrin α5 and Rab35. Our study identifies the upstream signaling events orchestrating migrasome biogenesis.

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) in the South China Sea (SCS) have dramatic impacts on local ecosystems, fisheries, and aquacultures. Our results show that SCS MHWs were strongly regulated by El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) with a distinct life cycle during 1982–2018. Based on the ENSO-associated sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) warming peaks in the SCS, we can classify SCS MHWs into three categories: El Niño-P1 during the first warming peak of El Niño from September to the following February, El Niño-P2 during the second warming peak of El Niño from the following June to September, and La Niña-P1 during the single warming peak of La Niña from the following February to May. The three types of SCS MHWs are all affected by the lower-level enhanced anticyclone over the western North Pacific (WNP), but their physical mechanisms are quite different. In El Niño-P1, SCS MHWs are mostly induced by enhanced net downward shortwave radiation and reduced latent heat flux loss over the southwestern and northern SCS, respectively. In El Niño-P2, SCS MHWs are primarily attributed to weaker entrainment cooling caused by a local enhanced anticyclone and stronger Ekman downwelling in the central-northern SCS. However, in La Niña-P1, SCS MHWs are mainly contributed by the reduced latent heat loss due to the weaker WNP anticyclone centered east of the Philippines on the pentad time scale. The distinct spatial distributions of MHWs show phase locking with ENSO-associated SCS SSTA warming, which provides a potential seasonal forecast of SCS MHWs according to the ENSO phase.

The seasonal prediction skills in the CAMS-CSM (the acronym stands for the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences Climate System Model) climate forecast system is evaluated with a set of retrospective forecast experiments during the period of 1981–2019. The CAMS-CSM, which has been registered for the sixth phase of the coupled model intercomparison project (CMIP6), is an atmosphere–ocean–land–sea ice fully coupled general circulation model. The assimilation scheme used in the forecast system is the 3-dimentional nudging, including both the atmospheric and oceanic components. The analyses mainly focus on the seasonal predictable skill of sea surface temperature, 2-m air temperature, and precipitation anomalies. The analyses revealed that the model shows a good prediction skill for the SST anomalies, especially in the tropical Pacific, in association with El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events. The anomaly correlation coefficient (ACC) score for ENSO can reach 0.75 at 6-month lead time. Furthermore, the extreme warm/cold Indian Ocean dipole (IOD) events are successfully predicted at 3- and even 6-month lead times. The whole ACC of IOD events between the observation and the prediction can reach 0.51 at 2-month lead time. There are reliable seasonal prediction skills for 2-m air temperature anomalies over most of the Northern Hemisphere, where the correlation is mainly above 0.4 at 2-month lead time, especially over the East Asia, North America and South America. However, the seasonal prediction for precipitation still faces a big challenge. The source of precipitation predictability over the East Asia can be partly related to strong ENSO events. Additionally, the anomalous anticyclone over the western North Pacific (WPAC) which connects the ENSO events and the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) can be well predicted at 6-month lead time.

The onset of the South China Sea summer monsoon (SCSSM) has traditionally been ascribed to the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on an interannual timescale, but the two do not correspond in some years. The present study applies harmonic analysis on the meridional temperature gradient (MTG) in mid–upper troposphere over South China Sea (SCS) and decomposes the onset process to be a slow-varying seasonal cycle and transient subseasonal component. The ENSO-related air temperature anomaly in the southern SCS provides seasonal predictability of SCSSM onset by a stable and robust relationship between ENSO and MTG seasonal cycle. However, in the northern SCS, the MTG is regulated by an intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) of extratropical air temperature with a significant 10–30-day period. This ISO originates over the western TP, then propagates eastward and gets enhanced by anomalous diabatic heating due to spring rainfall anomaly over South China, as a result of subseasonal thermal forcing of TP. When the ISO arrives to the north of the SCS, it directly changes the tropospheric temperature to modulate the MTG. Meanwhile, the upper-level circulation associated with the ISO alters the meridional potential vorticity advection and pumping effect, followed by the anomalous low-level westerly wind and monsoon convection over the SCS. The SCSSM onset is evidently disrupted from its seasonal cycle when this ISO is more active. Since the independence of its intensity from ENSO, this extratropical ISO over TP and South China provides additional subseasonal predictability of the onset dates of the SCSSM.

Two types of three-dimensional circulation of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) act as the coupling wheels determining the seasonal rainfall anomalies in China during 1979–2015. The first coupling mode features the interaction between the Mongolian cyclone over North Asia and the South Asian high (SAH) anomalies over the Tibetan Plateau at 200 hPa. The second mode presents the coupling between the anomalous low-level western Pacific anticyclone and upper-level SAH via the meridional flow over Southeast Asia. These two modes are responsible for the summer rainfall anomalies over China in 24 and 7 out of 37 years, respectively. However, the dominant SST anomalies in the tropical Pacific, the Indian Ocean, and the North Atlantic Ocean fail to account for the first coupling wheel’s interannual variability, illustrating the challenges in forecasting summer rainfall over China.

Seasonal evolution of rainband over East China is evident and shows remarkable year-to-year variations. The present study identified two dominant interannual modes of the seasonal evolution of rainband over East China from 1981 to 2018: (1) the sudden change pattern, in which the anomalous rainfall changes abruptly from boreal spring to summer, especially over South China; and (2) the northward migration pattern, which shows a gradual poleward migration of the anomalous rainband over East China with the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM). Both of them are regulated by the sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) in the Northern Hemisphere from spring to summer. In the sudden change pattern, the SSTAs in the Pacific modulate spring rainfall over South China via the ENSO–EASM teleconnection. By contrast, the North Atlantic SSTAs change the mid-latitude wave train and modify summer rainfall over South and North China, in conjunction with the anomalous tropical circulation due to the Indian SSTAs. In the northward migration pattern, the North Pacific SSTAs alter spring rainfall over South China by varying the low-level western North Pacific subtropical high and the zonal land–sea thermal contrast over East Asia. Afterward, the ENSO-like SSTAs induce a Pacific–Japan teleconnection and shift the anomalous rainband northward to the Yangtze-Huai River and North China in summer. The seasonal switch of the SSTAs regulating these two modes is physically linked from boreal spring to summer. This mechanism provides potential seasonal predictability of the seasonal evolution of the anomalous rainband over East China.

There exists a pronounced asymmetry between the amplitudes of central Pacific (CP) and eastern Pacific (EP) El Niño sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA). The present study examines such an asymmetry and its relationship with the North Pacific SSTA. Results indicate that the weaker CP El Niño amplitude can be attributed to the weaker anomalous zonal wind response to the east–west equatorial SSTA gradient during its growing phase compared with EP El Niño. Furthermore, the occurrence of CP El Niño is closely associated with southwesterly surface wind anomalies in the subtropical North Pacific, as well as ocean warming reminiscent of the North Pacific Gyre Oscillation (NPGO) pattern in its vicinity. Both the observations as well as the pacemaker experiments with a coupled global climate model suggest that the anomalous low-level southwesterlies, induced by the North Pacific Oscillation (NPO)-like atmospheric variability, can enhance anomalously positive SST signals and extend them southwestward to the central equatorial Pacific via the wind–evaporation–SST feedback. This will further attenuate the atmospheric response to zonal SSTA gradient, and hence weaken the amplitude of CP El Niño. Therefore, anomalous low-level southwesterlies over the subtropical North Pacific can effectively act as a conduit for tropical–subtropical air–sea interaction in that region, and can play an important role in limiting the intensity of CP El Niño.

Annual cycle is fundamental in the East Asian monsoon (EAM) systems, profoundly governing the spatiotemporal distribution of the East Asian rainfall. The present study identified the dominant modes of the annual cycle in the East Asian rainfall based on the Fourier harmonic analysis and the Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) decomposition. We evaluated the performance of the first two leading modes (i.e., EOF-1 and EOF-2) in historical experiments (1979&ndash, 2014) of the 21 released climate models of phase six of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). Comparing with the observation, although the CMIP6 models yield the essential fidelity, they still show considerable systematic biases in the amplitude and phase of the annual cycle, especially in east and south China. Most models exhibit substantial phase delays in the EOF-2 mode of the annual cycle. Some specific models (BCC-ESM1, CanESM5, and GFDL-CM4) exhibiting better performance could capture the observed annual cycle and the underlying physics in climatology and interannual variability. The limited fidelity of the EOF-2 mode of the EAM annual cycle primarily hinders the monsoon variability simulation and thus the reliable future projection. Therefore, the dominant modes of the EAM annual cycle act as the evaluate benchmark in the EAM modelling framework. Their improvement could be one possible bias correction strategy for decreasing the uncertainty in the CMIP6 simulation of the EAM.

The ascidian belongs to the sister group of vertebrates and shares many features with them. The gene regulatory network (GRN) controlling gene expression in ascidian embryonic development leading to the tadpole larva has revealed evolutionarily conserved gene circuits between ascidians and vertebrates. These conserved mechanisms are indeed useful to infer the original developmental programs of the ancestral chordates. Simultaneously, these studies have revealed which gene circuits are missing in the ascidian GRN; these gene circuits may have been acquired in the vertebrate lineage. In particular, the GRN responsible for gene expression in ectodermal cells of ascidian embryos has revealed the genetic programs that regulate the regionalization of the brain, formation of palps derived from placode-like cells, and differentiation of sensory neurons derived from neural crest-like cells. We here discuss how these studies have given insights into the evolution of these traits.

Foxg constitutes a regulatory loop with Fgf8 and plays an important role in the development of anterior placodes and the telencephalon in vertebrate embryos. Ascidians, which belong to Tunicata, the sister group of vertebrates, develop a primitive placode-like structure at the anterior boundary of the neural plate, but lack a clear counterpart of the telencephalon. In this animal, Foxg is expressed in larval palps, which are adhesive organs with sensory neurons. Here, we show that Foxg begins to be expressed in two separate rows of cells within the neural plate boundary region under the control of the MAPK pathway to pattern this region. However, Foxg is not expressed in the brain, and we find no evidence that knockdown of Foxg affects brain formation. Our data suggest that recruitment of Fgf to the downstream of Foxg might have been a critical evolutionary event for the telencephalon in the vertebrate lineage., Vertebrate telencephalon formation requires Foxg-Fgf8 cross-regulation, but while ascidians express Foxg in the neural plate, they lack a telencephalon. Here the authors show that Foxg loss does not affect ascidian brain formation, indicating that telencephalon evolution required recruitment of Fgf downstream of Foxg.

Background Extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ECC) has become one of the most rapidly increasing malignancies in China during recent decades. The relationship between tobacco exposure and ECC epidemics is unclear; this study aimed to explore this relationship. Methods We included 55,806 participants aged 30 years or older from the National Mortality and Smoking Survey of China. Smoking in participants and spouses was defined as 1 cigarette or more per day for up to 1 year. Spouses’ smoking was taken as a measure of exposure to passive smoking. Smoking information in 1980 was ascertained and outcomes were defined as ECC mortality during 1986–1988. Results We found that either passive or active smoking increased the risk of death from ECC by 20% (risk ratio [RR], 1.20; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.99–1.47), compared with no exposure to any tobacco. This risk was a notable 98% (RR, 1.98; 95% CI, 1.49–2.64) for individuals exposed to passive plus active smoking. These findings were highly consistent among men and women. The authors explore the intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) of rainfall anomalies in South China, the related circulation regimes, and discuss the possible causes of the large variability of the positive rainfall anomalies over South China during the winter of the 1982/83, 1997/98 and 2015/16 super El Niño events. Case-by-case analysis shows that the 10–20-day ISO associated with the successive heavy rainfall events lead to the positive anomalies of winter rainfall in the three winters. Meanwhile, the 20–50-day ISO is relatively stronger in the winter of 1982/83 and 2015/16 but weaker in the winter of 1997/98. Except for a different speed, the anomalies of the 200-hPa wave train associated with the two ISOs both propagate eastward along the westerly jet between 20 N and 30 N. In the winter of 1982/83 and 2015/16, when the upper-level subseasonal wave trains in different periods pass through South China, the in-phase enhancement of upper-level divergences and the pumping effect could induce the persistent heavy rainfall events, which facilitate the stronger seasonal-mean rainfall. Although the 10–20-day ISO alone in the winter of 1997/98 could cause the higher-frequency rainfall events, the weaker 20–50-day ISO attenuates the anomalies of the South China winter rainfall. Therefore, the joint effects of the 10–20- and 20–50-day ISOs are critical for the larger amount of above-normal rainfall over South China during the mature phase of super El Niño events.

Meiyu rainfall in June–July of 2020 hit the Yangtze‐Huaihe River basin, and the precipitation at lots of observational stations broke the records, inducing severe disasters there. Tibetan Plateau vortices (TPVs) generated over the Tibetan Plateau are local major rainfall triggers. In previous knowledge, TPVs can affect the rainfall in eastern China, only after emigrating from the Tibetan Plateau. In this work, roles of TPVs in the record Meiyu are revealed, implying that the effects of TPVs may be underestimated previously. Firstly, TPVs dying out over the Tibetan Plateau may be transformed into troughs and continue to move eastward, influencing the rainfall in Yangtze‐Huaihe River basin. Secondly, southwest vortices, the important rainfall producers in China, tend to be generated and maintained when TPVs are located over eastern plateau. The results give extended knowledge on the effects of TPVs, which are beneficial for the rainfall prediction in eastern China.

It has been argued that fewer cold extremes will be expected to occur over most midlatitude areas, because of anthropogenic-induced global warming. However, East Asia repeatedly suffered from unexpected cold spells during the winter of 2015/16, and the low surface air temperature (SAT) during 21–25 January 2016 broke the previous calendar record from 1961. We hypothesize that cold extremes such as these occur because of Arctic amplification (AA) of global warming. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed the changes of SAT variability in the winter season over East Asia. Our results show that the SAT variability (measured by the standard deviation of the winter season daily mean SAT) over East Asia has significantly increased in the era of AA during 1988/89–2015/16 and exhibits a polarization between warm and cold extremes, popularly dubbed as “weather whiplash.” This phenomenon is driven by both the thermodynamic effects of global warming and the dynamic effects of AA. Global warming favors a rising SAT and more frequent warm extremes. The AA phenomenon strengthens the wavy components of midlatitude circulation, leading to more frequent blockings over the Ural region and a stronger Siberian high in north Asia. This dynamic effect of AA enhances the intrusion of cold air from Siberia into East Asia and causes cold extremes. Because there is a comparable increase of frequency of both warm and cold extremes, the SAT variability significantly increases in unison with AA, but little change is observed in the seasonal mean SAT of East Asia. This implies increased risks of both cold and warm extremes over East Asia exist even during global warming.

The boreal summer monsoon (BSM), which includes the monsoons over India (IND), the western North Pacific (WNP), East Asia (EA), North America (NAM), and North Africa (NAF), shows prominent interannual variation (IAV) in summer precipitation and affects the areas with the largest populations in the world. In the present, the EOF analysis is used to extract the BSM dominant covariation mode during 1979–2014. This mode is featured by the out-of-phase rainfall IAV over the WNP compared with the other BSM members. The BSM covariation mode is closely associated with the upper- and lower-level coupled circulations, which are characterized by two anomalous zonal circulations over the tropical oceans coupled near the date line and an abnormal meridional cell over the WNP and EA regions, respectively. Furthermore, the strength of this mode depends on the phase relationship of rainfall IAV between the WNP and NAM monsoon regions, which is modulated by the seasonal evolution of ENSO events and the resultant SST anomalies (SSTAs) in the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO). The weaker mode is accompanied by the in-phase rainfall IAV between these two regions, along with the persisting ENSO events and stronger SSTAs in the TIO from winter to summer. In the years with fast-decaying ENSO events and the related weaker TIO SSTA, the out-of-phase rainfall IAV between the WNP and NAM region takes place to enhance this mode. A series of AGCM sensitivity experiments could reproduce the anomalies of atmospheric circulation related to the distinct seasonal evolution of ENSO events.

Future projections of the eastern-Pacific (EP) and central-Pacific (CP) types of El Niño in the twenty-first century, as well as their associated tropical circulation and precipitation variability, are investigated using historical runs and representative concentration pathway 8.5 (RCP8.5) simulations from 31 coupled models in phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5). As inferred from CMIP5 models that best capture both El Niño flavors, EP El Niño sea surface temperature (SST) variability will become weaker in the future climate, while no robust change of CP El Niño SST is found. Models also reach no consensus on the future change of relative frequency from CP to EP El Niño. However, there are robust changes in the tropical overturning circulation and precipitation associated with both types of El Niño. Under a warmer climate, magnitudes of precipitation anomalies during EP El Niño are projected to increase, presenting significant enhancement of the dry (wet) signal over the western (central–eastern) Pacific. This is consistent with an accelerated hydrological cycle in the deep tropics; hence, a “wet get wetter” picture appears under global warming, accompanied by a weakened anomalous Walker circulation. For CP El Niño, drier-than-normal conditions will be intensified over the tropical central–eastern Pacific in the future climate, with stronger anomalous sinking related to the strengthened North Pacific local Hadley cell. These results suggest that, besides the enhanced basic-state hydrological cycle over the tropics, other elements, such as the anomalous overturning circulation, might also play a role in determining the ENSO precipitation response to a warmer background climate.

The present study used harmonic and multivariate empirical orthogonal function (MV-EOF) analyses to identify the existence of climatological intraseasonal oscillation (CISO) in the diabatic heating, precipitation, and circulation of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM). The strongest CISO signals are found in the north of the western North Pacific, possibly because of the horizontal gradient of diabatic heating induced by the seasonal land–sea thermal contrast. Further, the phase relationship between the diabatic heating components maintains the EASM CISO. The first two coupling modes of EASM CISO in the circulation are robust during May through August, with a period of 40–80 days, and exhibit phase locking to the stepwise establishment of the EASM, which reveals the coaction of the Mongolian cyclone (MC) around Lake Baikal at 850 hPa, the western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH) at 500 hPa, and the South Asian high (SAH) over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) at 200 hPa. The first mode shows that the jointly enhanced MC, WNPSH, and SAH correspond to a tripole rainfall anomaly with strong mei-yu and baiu fronts over East Asia. The second mode, however, indicates the eastward and northwestward propagation of MC and WNPSH, respectively, with suppressed SAH, as well as a dipole rainfall anomaly over East Asia. Both the observations and numerical simulation verify the importance of daily diabatic heating and SST in maintaining the CISO modes over the WNP, where the condensation heating related to atmospheric forcing determines the local intraseasonal air–sea interaction.

The Tibetan Plateau (TP) region, often referred to as the Third Pole, is the world's highest plateau and exerts a considerable influence on regional and global climate. The state of the snowpack over the TP is a major research focus due to its great impact on the headwaters of a dozen major Asian rivers. While many studies have attempted to validate atmospheric reanalyses over the TP area in terms of temperature or precipitation, there have been – remarkably – no studies aimed at systematically comparing the snow depth or snow cover in global reanalyses with satellite and in situ data. Yet, snow in reanalyses provides critical surface information for forecast systems from the medium to sub-seasonal timescales. Here, snow depth and snow cover from four recent global reanalysis products, namely the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ERA5 and ERA-Interim reanalyses, the Japanese 55-year Reanalysis (JRA-55) and the NASA Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA-2), are inter-compared over the TP region. The reanalyses are evaluated against a set of 33 in situ station observations, as well as against the Interactive Multisensor Snow and Ice Mapping System (IMS) snow cover and a satellite microwave snow depth dataset. The high temporal correlation coefficient (0.78) between the IMS snow cover and the in situ observations provides confidence in the station data despite the relative paucity of in situ measurement sites and the harsh operating conditions. While several reanalyses show a systematic overestimation of the snow depth or snow cover, the reanalyses that assimilate local in situ observations or IMS snow cover are better capable of representing the shallow, transient snowpack over the TP region. The latter point is clearly demonstrated by examining the family of reanalyses from the ECMWF, of which only the older ERA-Interim assimilated IMS snow cover at high altitudes, while ERA5 did not consider IMS snow cover for high altitudes. We further tested the sensitivity of the ERA5-Land model in offline experiments, assessing the impact of blown snow sublimation, snow cover to snow depth conversion and, more importantly, excessive snowfall. These results suggest that excessive snowfall might be the primary factor for the large overestimation of snow depth and cover in ERA5 reanalysis. Pending a solution for this common model precipitation bias over the Himalayas and the TP, future snow reanalyses that optimally combine the use of satellite snow cover and in situ snow depth observations in the assimilation and analysis cycles have the potential to improve medium-range to sub-seasonal forecasts for water resources applications.

The East Asian subtropical summer monsoon (EASSM) is one component of the East Asian summer monsoon system, and its evolution determines the weather and climate over East China. In the present paper, we firstly demonstrate the formation and advancement of the EASSM rainbelt and its associated circulation and precipitation patterns through reviewing recent studies and our own analysis based on JRA-55 (Japanese 55-yr Reanalysis) data and CMAP (CPC Merged Analysis of Precipitation), GPCP (Global Precipitation Climatology Project), and TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) precipitation data. The results show that the rainy season of the EASSM starts over the region to the south of the Yangtze River in early April, with the establishment of strong southerly wind in situ. The EASSM rainfall, which is composed of dominant convective and minor stratiform precipitation, is always accompanied by a frontal system and separated from the tropical summer monsoon system. It moves northward following the onset of the South China Sea summer monsoon. Moreover, the role of the land–sea thermal contrast in the formation and maintenance of the EASSM is illustrated, including in particular the effect of the seasonal transition of the zonal land–sea thermal contrast and the influences from the Tibetan Plateau and midlatitudes. In addition, we reveal a possible reason for the subtropical climate difference between East Asia and East America. Finally, the multi-scale variability of the EASSM and its influential factors are summarized to uncover possible reasons for the intraseasonal, interannual, and interdecadal variability of the EASSM and their importance in climate prediction.

Background Smoking increases the risk of numerous cancers; however, an association of smoking with adult gliomas has not been found in a population. Methods This case-control study included 4556 glioma cases (ICD-9 code 191.0-191.9) aged ≥ 30 years and 9112 controls from a national survey of smoking and mortality in China in 1989-1991. Controls from 325 255 surviving spouses of all-cause deaths were randomly assigned to cases in each of 103 areas according to sex and age groups at a ratio of 2:1. Smoking information was ascertained retrospectively by interviewing surviving spouses. Results After adjustment for confounders, smoking increased the risk of glioma deaths by 11% (odds ratio [OR] = 1.11; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.03-1.21). Compared with non-smokers; the increased risk was 9% (OR = 1.09; 95% CI: 0.99-1.20) in men and 16% (OR = 1.16; 95% CI: 1.00-1.36) in women. The risk increased with age and doses. For individuals aged ≥ 50 years, smoking was associated with higher risk of glioma death by 25% (OR = 1.25; 95% CI: 1.15-1.38); this increased risk for smokers who smoked ≥ 20 cigarettes daily for ≥ 30 years was 53% (OR = 1.53; 95% CI: 1.34-1.74). There were similar findings in both men and women and with either pathology-based or non-pathology-based comparisons. Conclusions This study indicates that smoking is associated with glioma deaths in the Chinese population. Long-term heavy smoking could be a factor for risk stratification in individuals attending brain tumor clinics.

Anomalous warming occurred in the equatorial central-eastern Pacific in early May 2014, attracting much attention to the possible occurrence of an extreme El Nino event that year because of its similarity to the situation in early 1997. However, the subsequent variation in sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) during summer 2014 in the tropical Pacific was evidently different to that in 1997, but somewhat similar to the situation of the 1990 aborted El Nino event. Based on NCEP (National Centers for Environmental Prediction) oceanic and atmospheric reanalysis data, the physical processes responsible for the strength of El Nino events are examined by comparing the dominant factors in 2014 in terms of the preceding instability of the coupled ocean–atmosphere system and westerly wind bursts (WWBs) with those in 1997 and 1990, separately. Although the unstable ocean–atmosphere system formed over the tropical Pacific in the preceding winter of 2014, the strength of the preceding instability was relatively weak. Weak oceanic eastward-propagating downwelling Kelvin waves were forced by the weak WWBs over the equatorial western Pacific in March 2014, as in February 1990. The consequent positive upper-oceanic heat content anomalies in the spring of 2014 induced only weak positive SSTAs in the central-eastern Pacific–unfavorable for the subsequent generation of summertime WWB sequences. Moreover, the equatorial western Pacific was not cooled, indicating the absence of positive Bjerknes feedback in early summer 2014. Therefore, the development of El Nino was suspended in summer 2014.

The El Nino event in 2014 starts with the substantial warm sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) in the equatorial eastern Pacific, following the westerly wind event (WWE) over equatorial western Pacific from February to March 2014. But it is suspended from June to August after the warm SSTA in equatorial eastern Pacific weakening in April when the WWE disappears. Results show that the 2014 El Nino event is triggered by the WWE, which is induced by the wet phase of MJO propagating eastward from the equatorial Indian Ocean in February. In early March the dry phase of MJO arrives at equatorial western Pacific to weaken the WWE. And the MJO is decayed evidently after mid March. Afterwards the anomalous easterly over equatorial western Pacific is determined by the zonal SSTA gradient in equatorial western-central Pacific. After the MJO disappearance, the anomalous surface easterly could warm the local SST via the wind-evaporation feedback to enhance the sea surface depression in situ . Thus the evident cold advection anomalies are formed in the mixed layer of equatorial central Pacific, where the continuous warming is prevented to increase the local sea surface pressure. As a result, a negative zonal gradient of sea surface pressure anomalies is enhanced over the equatorial western-central Pacific, developing the anomalous easterly over the equatorial western Pacific. Such positive feedback between the easterly anomalies over equatorial western Pacific and the zonal SSTA gradient in equatorial western–central Pacific maintains from June to August 2014, when the El Nino event is suspended with the absence of WWE.

This paper reviews progress in the study of Tibetan Plateau (TP) climate dynamics over the past decade. Several theoretical frameworks, including thermal adaptation and the TP sensible heat (SH) driving air-pump, have been developed to identify the mechanisms responsible for the circulation anomaly produced by thermal forcing of the TP. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the thermal effects of large-scale orography, including the Tibetan and Iranian Plateaus (TIP), are crucial for the formation of the East Asian and South Asian summer monsoons (SASM) because the surface SH of the TIP is the major driver of the water vapor transport required for the genesis of the north branch of the SASM. The large-scale orography of the TP affects the Asian climate through thermal forcing in spring and summer, and mechanical forcing in winter. The TP forcing can also influence the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) onset over the Bay of Bengal (BOB) by enhancing the BOB warm pool at the surface and by modulating the South Asian High (SAH) in the upper troposphere. On intra-seasonal timescales, the TP thermal forcing significantly modulates spring rainfall in southern China and generates the biweekly oscillation of the SAH in summer. Despite climate warming, the atmospheric heat source over the TP, particularly the spring SH, exhibits a clear weakening trend from the 1980s to 2000s. This weakening of the spring SH contributed to the anomalous ‘dry in the north’ and ‘wet in the south’ rainfall pattern observed over East China. Also discussed are challenges to further understanding the mechanism of TP forcing on the multi-scale variability of the ASM.
