The paper investigates the expectations of prospective university students in Cyprus in relation to the returns to higher education. Specifically, we estimate the expected rates of return to a higher degree and compare the estimates of respondents based on the intended field of study and country of study. Moreover, we estimate expected rates of return for students of different socioeconomic backgrounds. The data used for the estimation were collected from 2051 students in their final year of secondary education in Cyprus in January and February of 2013. The findings point to rational expectations on the part of prospective students. Of the four most popular country destinations, the highest rate of return was expected by respondents intending to study in the United Kingdom. As regards field of study, Medicine and related fields were associated with the highest rate of return. Children of higher parental educational and occupational levels expected higher rates of return. In regression analysis, several variables were significantly linked to the expected rate of return. These included the respondent’s socioeconomic status, the field of study, the country of study (students intending to study in Cyprus expected lower rates), student ability, and urban/semi-urban residence. The paper discusses the implications of the findings for educational planning and policy making in higher education.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the problems faced by unemployed and underemployed graduate students in a small European country. It focusses on the way young people adjust to unemployment and underemployment and on the specific strategies they use to enhance their employability. Various aspects of these strategies as they relate to student decision making and analysis are discussed. The role of new skills and competencies in managing graduate unemployment is examined. Design/methodology/approach Qualitative research was conducted with 15 graduate students of the Education Department of the University of Cyprus. In-depth interviews and focus-group interviews were used to collect data. Findings The results indicate that the main strategy used by respondents in order to enhance their prospects of employment is the acquisition of additional skills and competencies. A secondary strategy is the pursuit of employment opportunities abroad. Student decisions and perspectives appear to be optimistic, partially rational, placed within a short-term horizon and influenced by the belief in the investment value of education. Research limitations/implications The findings are qualitative and cannot be considered to be representative of the population. However, they allow an in-depth analysis of the way a group of students experiences and manages unemployment and underemployment. Originality/value The way young people deal with unemployment and underemployment has not been investigated in many studies, especially in relation to the degree to which graduates formulate specific strategies in order to manage the transition from the university to the world of work. Students’ and graduates’ perceptions regarding the association between skills and employment can provide the basis for more informed planning and policy making in higher education.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the link between transformational/transactional/passive-avoidant leadership behaviors, teachers’ perceptions of leader effectiveness and teachers’ job satisfaction. In this context, the paper also examines the conceptual model underlying the scales of the most widely used instrument in research on transformational leadership, the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ). The theoretical framework for this investigation is that of the full range model of leadership. Design/methodology/approach – An adapted version of the MLQ was administered to a sample of 438 secondary school teachers in the Republic of Cyprus. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling were used in the analysis of the data. Findings – The results provide support for a three-factor structure model consisting of transformational, transactional and passive-avoidant forms of leadership, representing three distinct components of leadership behavior. Teachers’ perceptions of leader effectiveness and teachers’ overall job satisfaction were found to be significantly linked to the leadership behaviors included in the full range model of leadership. Research limitations/implications – The findings are cross-sectional and based on the subjective perceptions of teachers. The analysis of the data suggests that transformational leadership may not be a sufficient condition for (perceived) headteacher effectiveness. Originality/value – The link between transformational leadership, perceived leader effectiveness and teachers’ overall job satisfaction has not been investigated in many studies. The present study attempts to address this gap.

Research points to several determinants of the private demand for higher education, which include individual, social, economic, and institutional variables. Of these variables, economic factors are considered to be highly relevant, especially in the current financial crisis. The paper investigates the link between expected rates of return to higher education and the intention of secondary education graduates to pursue university studies. The effect of additional variables influencing the choice of higher education (ability, gender, socioeconomic status [SES], type of secondary school, area of residence) is also examined. The findings show a significant link between the perceived rates of return and the intention of secondary school graduates to enter tertiary education. With the exception of residence, all independent variables are strong determinants of the intention to enter higher education. The paper also points to the considerable effect of the financial crisis on students’ expectations in that respondents reported lower perceived rates of return compared to previous estimates in the same country. The paper investigates the views of Greek university graduates on the link between higher education and productivity in order to determine the extent to which productivity can be considered to be an indication of quality in higher education. It also investigates the perceived effect of the type and content of higher education on productivity; factors limiting the positive impact of higher education on productivity; and ways of reducing the influence of these factors. In-depth interviews were conducted with 40 employed university graduates in Greece. Respondents generally considered higher education to have a productivity-enhancing effect, in disagreement with the screening challenge to the human capital interpretation of the link between education and productivity. The article examines the problems faced by beginning teachers in Cyprus and the extent to which headteachers are considered to provide adequate guidance and support to them. Data were collected through interviews with 25 school teachers in Cyprus, who had recently entered teaching (within 1–5 years) in public primary schools. According to the findings, beginning teachers faced several problems at the workplace that include organizational and administrative issues as well as difficulties in coping with groups of students. Several respondents stated they did not receive sufficient support from their headteachers and in some cases, considered the culture at the school to be antagonistic. Respondents provided several suggestions on ways of overcoming problems faced by beginning teachers. They pointed to the need for greater support on the part of the headteachers through better and more frequent communication, and openness in the organizational climate. This article examines the main influences on the decision of secondary school graduates to select higher education over labour-market entry. It reports the views of prospective higher education students and secondary school teachers regarding the main influences on the students' intention to pursue higher studies. Survey research was used to collect information from 611 students and 215 secondary school teachers in the Republic of Cyprus. Respondents were asked to rate factors commonly considered to influence the choice of higher education, including the economic and career benefits of a university degree, and reference individuals such as teachers and parents. According to the findings, there were both similarities and differences in the importance students and teachers assigned to different factors. Both students and teachers acknowledged the importance of personal, economic and occupational considerations in the choice of higher education. However, secondary school teachers tended to overestimate their own influence on the decisions of their students. The article discusses the implications of the findings for education policy, especially in relation to measures required to address the needs and wants of prospective university students.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine the decision‐making process in the Greek education system, as an indicator of the design and implementation of educational policy.Design/methodology/approachThe paper uses a case study approach to identify limitations in educational decision making in Greece. Specifically, it examines the case of the decision‐making process that led to the establishment of All‐Day primary schools in the country.FindingsThe decision to establish All‐Day schools was not based on collaboration among stakeholders. Due to the centralisation of the Greek educational system, important decisions are made at the level of the Ministry of Education. Moreover, it appears that the central educational administration did not follow a specific action programme for the establishment and operation of All‐Day schools.Practical implicationsThe findings indicate that policy proposals for educational reform in Greece are controlled by a small group of bureaucrats. This results in a decision‐making process that fails to take into account the interests of different stakeholders and broader societal needs.Originality/valueThis paper attempts to explore the limitations of a centralised education system in relation to decision making and the formulation of educational policy. It takes a critical approach to present practices in an attempt to improve educational decision making in Greece.

The paper investigates the economic benefits and costs of higher education as these are perceived by higher education candidates and labour market entrants in Cyprus. It provides further evidence on the topic after a similar study which preceded the present project by 10 years. Perceived rates of return to education are presented for two points in time, namely, 1993 and 2003. The findings point to an increasing awareness of the link between education and earnings on the part of young people, which can be linked to the country's economic development. The main influences on the respondents’ expected lifetime earnings are examined through multiple regression analysis. The paper provides new estimates of the perceived rates of return to higher education in Cyprus and compares them to previous estimates for the year 1994 in the same country. Both the elaborate and the short-cut methods are used in the estimation of rates of return. The estimated rates are entered as independent variables in logistic regression analysis in order to study the effect of economic considerations on the decision of secondary school students to pursue higher education. The findings show an increase in the perceived rate of return for both higher education and labour market entrants. In agreement with human capital theory, the mean rate of return to higher education expected by higher education candidates is considerably higher than that expected by labour market entrants. The paper presents the findings of a study of the decision-making process which precedes the choice of a university in Greece. Specifically, the degree of rationality exhibited by prospective students is assessed in an attempt to provide a test for the economic approach to the explanation of human behaviour. Information search is used as an indication of rationality and measured through a survey conducted among 220 university students in the academic year 2003/2004. The findings provide weak support for the rationality postulate in that they indicate that more than 40% of respondents could not be classified as information seekers. Logistic regression analysis was used in order to identify characteristics associated with the propensity to engage in information search: high socioeconomic status students, students who perceived the decision as important, and students who had acquired information prior to the choice of a university were found to be more likely to engage in information search. This paper investigates the degree of information search that precedes the choice of a private third-level educational institution in Cyprus. Information search is used as an indication of rationality in order to provide a test for the economic approach to the explanation of human behaviour. A survey was conducted among 120 college students in the academic year 1998/99. The findings indicate that information search among students contemplating the choice of a private college was less than expected under traditional economic theory. This article investigates the effect of the completion of an undergraduate educational administration course on the expectations of pre‐service teachers regarding school organisation. Data were collected from 225 students enrolled in the primary education programme of the University of Cyprus. According to the findings, respondents who had completed the administration course had more modest, and probably more realistic, expectations with respect to some aspects of school organisation. The significant differences between course completers and non‐completers concerned the future role of the teacher in the school system and the role of his/her superiors. The following recommendations are offered: the inclusion of the educational administration module in the course requirements of the primary education programme; the improvement of the practicum currently offered by the education department; and the attendance to problems in school administration, especially in the area of teacher evaluation. 42 1 98 111 Cited By :2

The article assesses the importance of rate-of-return (RoR) analysis for planning and policy making in higher education. After a review of the methods used, the main criticisms brought against RoR analysis are discussed in relation to the screening function of education, the measurement of educational costs and benefits, and of the pure effect of education on earnings. Recommendations are made with respect to the use of rates of return as guides to public and private decisions in higher education: the extension of the application of rate-of-return analysis to include the estimation of returns to the quality of education; information to prospective students about rates of return associated with different types of education; and the use of perceived rates of return as a basis for the demand for higher education. 16 3 369 384 Cited By :2

Compares the views of pre-service and in-service elementary school teachers regarding the effectiveness of school leaders in Cyprus. Data were collected from 66 in-service teachers, and 79 preservice teachers enrolled at the University of Cyprus. The findings indicate that in-service teachers were significantly more positive than pre-service teachers in their assessment of school principals. The former considered the weaknesses associated with principals to be mainly the result of the limitations of the educational system in Cyprus, whereas the latter expected their future superiors to be ineffective in their management of interpersonal relationships. The purpose of this article is to examine the relationship between preservice teachers' general self-esteem and mathematics achievement through the inclusion of variables that are supported by recent research in psychology and social cognitive theory. A structural equation model is used to examine the paths from mathematics achievement to general self-esteem and vice versa. To this end, the concepts of self-esteem and the relationships between self-esteem and academic achievement are first explained, followed by a description of the baseline model that was used for the analysis of the data. The methodology of the study, with emphasis on the description of the intervening variables, is then summarized. The paper investigates the association between individual characteristics and teacher job satisfaction in secondary education in Cyprus. It focuses on two individual characteristics commonly linked to job satisfaction in the literature, namely, gender and years of experience. A short version of a questionnaire previously employed by Dinham and Scott was administered to a sample of secondary school teachers. The use of factor analysis resulted in the identification of the following seven factors which represent different aspects of job satisfaction: school climate, key stakeholders, support and training, participation in school management, student/school progress, professional development and employment terms. Experienced teachers report significantly higher job satisfaction on two of the identified dimensions (key stakeholders and participation in school management). The article examines the role of career counsellors in secondary education in Cyprus, with emphasis on their effect on students' career decisions. Survey research was used to collect information from 611 students and 36 career counsellors in Cyprus. Students were asked to rate the importance of several factors as influences on their career decisions. This allowed for the assessment of the importance of career counsellors relative to other influencing factors. In a separate survey, career counsellors provided information on their job satisfaction and their effectiveness in providing guidance and information to students. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected. According to the findings, students consider counsellors to be of little or no importance as sources of guidance and information in the decision‐making process which precedes the choice between higher education and employment. Moreover, counsellors point to serious problems at the workplace which limit their effectiveness. The study aims to investigate the relationship of organisational and teacher variables to job satisfaction among teachers in Cyprus. Data were collected through a questionnaire used in the 'Teacher 2000 Project', which examined teacher job satisfaction in several countries including Australia, England, New Zealand and the USA. A logistic regression model was employed to investigate the link between several variables and job satisfaction. According to the findings, four variables were found to have a significant effect on the likelihood of teacher job satisfaction. These were: (a) gender - men reported higher satisfaction than women; (b) school level - teachers working at lower education levels reported greater satisfaction than their higher-level counterparts; (c) satisfaction with the school climate; and (d) satisfaction with the degree to which the teacher had attained his/her professional goals. Pay was found to be weakly associated with job satisfaction. The implications of the findings for policy initiatives aimed at increasing job satisfaction in education are discussed. This article investigates and compares the satisfaction levels of pre-service and in-service primary school teachers with respect to school organization and administration. Primary data were collected through questionnaires completed by 315 pre-service teachers and 439 in-service teachers in Greece. The following six factors of school organization were identified: school climate, principal’s role, school organization, teacher incentives, role of superiors, and teachers’ role. According to the findings, the satisfaction ratings of pre-service and in-service teachers were significantly different on all of the above factors. Specifically, the satisfaction ratings of pre-service teachers were significantly lower than those of in-service teachers on all factors, except for the teacher incentives factor, where they were significantly higher. The paper examines the views of students regarding the extent of their participation in the management of their university and their satisfaction with the degree of this participation. After an examination of the literature on student participation in university governance, the author presents the results of a survey based on data collected from 135 students of the University of Cyprus in 2002. According to the findings, respondents believed that their involvement in the management of their institution was very limited. This applied to both high and low levels of decision making, even though respondents recognised that their input was greater in less important decisions. The perceived limited involvement resulted in feelings of frustration and dissatisfaction among students, with the majority of respondents demanding a higher level of participation for all three decision making situations considered in the study. The paper discusses the implications of the findings for the practice of distributed leadership at contemporary universities, with emphasis on the need to abandon outdated leadership models. The paper examines the perceptions of future and current primary school teachers in Greece regarding the effectiveness of their school leaders. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected through questionnaires completed by 126 future and 94 current teachers. According to the findings, future teachers were less positive than their current counterparts in their assessment of school leadership. Several future teachers expected their future leaders to be overly controlling and authoritarian. Current teachers, on the other hand, were more concerned about the appointment of individuals to leadership posts with no prior managerial training. The paper argues for the need to increase student participation in university governance, especially in relation to high-level decision-making concerning the aims and mission of tertiary institutions. The views of academics on the aims and mission of higher education in society are related to their orientation regarding teaching and research. Data were collected through questionnaires from 52 academics in Cyprus. The responses suggest that the humanistic or personal-development view of the mission of higher education was considerably more popular among academics than the vocational or market-oriented view. Teaching-focused academics are more likely than research-focused academics to emphasise the benefits associated with the teaching and vocational aspects of higher education. A qualitative analysis of respondents' answers to three open-ended questions shows that teaching-focused academics place greater emphasis on the importance of higher education for the development of the student. The study compares the satisfaction ratings of future and current elementary school teachers with respect to the main aspects of school organization and administration. Data were collected from 66 in-service teachers and 79 preservice teachers in Cyprus. The application of factor analysis on the data resulted in the identification of the following main dimensions of school organization: headmaster's role, school organization, school climate, teacher incentives/work conditions, inspector's role and teachers' role. The comparison of the satisfaction ratings of future and current teachers on the above factors produced the following findings: first, the ratings of the two groups differed significantly for the first four factors. Secondly, future teachers reported lower satisfaction ratings than their in-service counterparts in the headmaster's role, school organization and school climate factors and higher ratings on the teacher incentives/work conditions factor. These discrepancies are considered to constitute causes of concern for educational policy-makers. The high expectations of future teachers on the teacher incentives/work conditions factor are viewed as a probable subsequent cause of cognitive dissonance and job dissatisfaction. On the other hand, the low expectations of future teachers with respect to three factors (headmaster's role, school organization, school climate) are likely to reduce their initial enthusiasm for their job. The article examines the reasons for the high demand for higher education in Cyprus. At present, economic, societal, and cultural forces are widely accepted as responsible for the phenomenal increase in demand. A survey of secondary school final form students conducted in Cyprus by the author reconfirms the importance of these forces but also points to another demand influencing factor, namely, the students' psychological motivation in the pursuit of higher studies. The article discusses the policy implications of the findings and suggests the following as measures to help promote a better match between higher education choices and labour market conditions: the provision of greater and more accurate information to secondary school students on the employment opportunities available with a higher education diploma; the promotion of vocational nonuniversity fields of study among secondary school students; and the frequent and closer interaction between higher education institutions and the labour market.

The paper estimates perceived rates of return to higher education in Cyprus and uses them in logistic regression analysis in order to study the effect of economic considerations on the decision of secondary school pupils to pursue higher education. Unlike earlier studies, the data used in the computation of these rates are based wholly on the pupils' subjective estimates. The paper examines the costs and economic benefits of higher education as these are perceived by final-form secondary school students in Cyprus. It also investigates the main influences on students' expected lifetime earnings. The findings are supportive of human capital theory: students who intended to enter third-level education expected their lifetime earnings to increase considerably as a result. In contrast, labour market entrants did not associate higher education with significantly higher earnings; they also believed its costs to be greater than those reported by higher education entrants. Επιδιώκει να διερευνήσει αποτελεσματικές συγκλίσεις και δεσμούς ανάμεσα στους βασικούς εκπροσώπους στον χώρο της έρευνας, δηλαδή της ΕΣΒ και της ΕΣΑ., ικανές να βελτιώσουν τα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα και τους παράγοντες στο επίπεδο του σχολείου. Το κίνητρο αυτής της μελέτης δόθηκε από πρόσκληση του Υπουργείου Παιδείας στην Κύπρο το οποίο ζήτησε μεθόδους βασισμένες στη θεωρία για να βοηθήσουν τα σχολεία να βελτιώσουν τα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα. Οι παραδοσιακές προσεγγίσεις στη σύζευξη των δύο περιοχών της έρευνας με στόχο τη βελτίωση περιορίζονται σε προσεγγίσεις συγχώνευσης, όπου συνδυάζονται στοιχεία από τους δύο ερευνητικούς τομείς. Ωστόσο, παρά τα οφέλη αυτής της προσέγγισης, έχει εκφραστεί σκεπτικισμός ως προς τις δυνατότητες επιτυχούς εφαρμογής. Η ερευνητική κοινότητα έχει καταλήξει στο συμπέρασμα ότι υπάρχει ανάγκη ανάπτυξης μοντέλων και θεωριών που θα μπορούσαν ρητά να ερμηνεύσουν τους δεσμούς μεταξύ της έρευνας ΣΒ και ΣΑ. Η μελέτη αυτή, υποστηρίζει τη χρήση της προσέγγισης DASI ως παράδειγμα μοντέλων ικανών να βοηθήσουν τα σχολεία, και ιδιαίτερα τα σχολεία της δευτεροβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης, να τα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα και τη λειτουργία τους. Σε αυτό το πλαίσιο, η μελέτη στοχεύει να εξετάσει την επίδραση της χρήσης της προσέγγισης DASI για τη βελτίωση τόσο των μαθησιακών αποτελεσμάτων μαθητών δευτεροβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης όσο και των σχολικών παραγόντων του DASI και έτσι να διερευνήσει την ύπαρξη άμεσων και έμμεσων επιδράσεων των σχολικών παραγόντων στη μάθηση των μαθητών. Επιπλέον, διερευνά τις επιπτώσεις της διάρκειας καθώς και τη βιωσιμότητα της εφαρμογής του DASI σε σχολεία δευτεροβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης. Η μελέτη χρησιμοποίησε ψευδό- πειραματικό σχεδιασμό που εκτείνεται σε τρία συνεχόμενα σχολικά έτη. Το δείγμα επιλέγηκε και διαρθρώθηκε με τρόπο που να διευκολύνει τη διερεύνηση των στόχων της μελέτης. Η μελέτη χρησιμοποίησε τεχνικές παραμετρικής και απαραμετρικής στατιστικής συμπερασματολογίας, μετρήσης και μοντελοποίησης δομικών εξισώσεων για την επικύρωση εργαλείων μέτρησης που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν. Για την ανάλυση των δεδομένων, χρησιμοποιήθηκε πολυεπίπεδη ανάλυση παλινδρόμησης και απαραμετρικές αναλύσεις. Τα αποτελέσματα δείχνουν θετική και στατιστικά σημαντική επίδραση της χρήσης της προσέγγισης DASI στη βελτίωση των μαθησιακών αποτελεσμάτων και των σχολικών παραγόντων. Τα τυποποιημένα αποτελέσματα της επίδρασης DASI είναι συγκρίσιμα με παρόμοιες μελέτες σε δημοτικά σχολεία. Η διάρκεια έχει σημασία καθώς τα σχολεία που παρέμειναν στο πρόγραμμα παρουσίασαν αξιοσημείωτη βελτίωση στα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα. Ενδιαφέροντα αποτελέσματα παρέχονται σε ότι αφορά τη βιωσιμότητα της παροχής παρεμβάσεων βελτίωσης του σχολείου όπως το DASI. Τέλος, καταγράφονται συνέπειες ως προς τη θεωρία, την εκπαιδευτική πολιτική και εφαρμογή στην πράξη και τεκμηριώνονται προτάσεις για περαιτέρω έρευνα. The pioneer works of Coleman and Jenks, in the 1960s and early 1970s, spread the message that schools provide little opportunity for socially disadvantaged students to overcome entrance deficiency conditions. This conclusion was counter-intuitive and constituted a clear antithesis to the previously comfortable assumption that choices among schools and school processes are important to children’s educational future. As an act of reaction two major research disciplines have emerged. Namely, those of School Improvement Research (SIR) and School Effectiveness Research (SER). However, there are certain conceptual and theoretical differences between that kept them apart for many years. This research study deals with the issue of improving schools and especially secondary level schools. It seeks to investigate effective convergences and links between the two main research proponents in the field, those of SIR and SER, able to improve both schools and student learning outcomes. The motive for this study was given by a call made by the Ministry of Education in Cyprus who asked for theory-based methods to help schools upgrade their students’ learning outcomes. Traditional approaches in linking the two research proponents for improving schools are confined by what was termed as merging approaches, where elements from both research areas are combined to help schools in their improvement efforts. However, despite the benefits of the merging approach, scepticism has been expressed about the possibilities of a successful implementation. The research community has come to the conclusion that there is a need for developing models and theories which explicitly could interpret links between SI and SE research. This study advocates for using the DASI approach as an example of such models able to help schools, and especially secondary-level schools, improve their functioning and raise student learning outcomes. In this context, this study aims to examine the impact of using the DASI approach for improving student learning outcomes at secondary level schools and the school-level factors of DASI and thus investigate the exitance of direct and indirect effects school-level factors upon student learning outcomes. Moreover, it investigates duration and sustainability effects when applying the DASI at secondary level schools. The study has employed a quasi-experimental design spanned in three consecutive school years. The sample settings used facilitate for investigating the study’s objectives. The study used parametric and non-parametric statistical inference, measurement, and structural equation modelling techniques to validate the instruments used. For the analysis of the data, the study employed multilevel regression and non-parametric analyses. The results show positive and statistically significant effect of using the DASI approach as regards improving student learning outcomes and the school-level factors. Standardised effects of the DASI provision found to be comparable to similar studies at primary schools. Duration matters as schools remaining in the program showed remarkable improvement in their students’ learning outcomes. Also, interesting results are provided regarding the sustainability effects of providing school improvement interventions as the DASI. Implications for theory, policy and practice are drawn and suggestions for further research are made.

Education has been always seen as one of the mechanisms to equalize social disparities. However, despite the efforts over the past decades, the achievement gap between high and low socioeconomic status (SES) students fails to close. Apart from the financial and intellectual differences, socioeconomic groups are expected to differ in more aspects of life. Academic motivation is considered one of the dispositional effects of SES, however, because of its multiformity as a concept its role is not clear yet. The present study builds upon the growing body of research on investigating indirect effects of academic motivation between SES and student outcomes in an effort to better conceptualize this phenomenon. We use data from PISA 2018 to investigate four motivational elements conducting comparative analysis across five countries. Mediating relationships were investigated with Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to confirm path models. The results demonstrate that certain but not all motivational elements support the hypothesized partial mediation, significantly reducing the direct effect of SES on academic achievement in all countries. Consistent results for enjoyment of reading and expected occupational status advocate on tergeted practical efforts to foster motivation for lower SES students.

Η έρευνα αυτή επικεντρώνεται στη μελέτη του χρόνου εμπλοκής των μαθητών. Ερευνά εάν και πώς επηρεάζει τα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα και εάν επηρεάζεται από άλλους παράγοντες που λειτουργούν σε επίπεδο μαθητή ή τάξης. Συγκεκριμένα, η έρευνα διερευνά κατά πόσο η ποιότητα διδασκαλίας, όπως προτείνεται από το Δυναμικό Μοντέλο Εκπαιδευτικής Αποτελεσματικότητας, καθώς επίσης και παράγοντες που εδράζονται στο επίπεδο του μαθητή και σχετίζονται με την ψυχολογική διάσταση της Έρευνας για την Εκπαιδευτική Αποτελεσματικότητα (συγκεκριμένα, ο τύπος προσωπικότητας και το στιλ μάθησης), έχουν έμμεσες επιπτώσεις στα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα μέσω του χρόνου εμπλοκής. Επιπρόσθετα, η έρευνα αυτή μελετά το βαθμό στον οποίο η ποιότητα διδασκαλίας καθώς επίσης και ο τύπος προσωπικότητας του μαθητή και το στιλ μάθησης του, μπορούν να επηρεάσουν τα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα. Για να διερευνηθούν οι σκοποί της έρευνας, οι συμμετέχοντες επιλέχθηκαν με κατά στάδιο δειγματοληψία. Η διαδικασία επέφερε ένα σύνολο από 27 σχολεία δημοτικής εκπαίδευσης, 107 εκπαιδευτικούς και 1718 μαθητές. Για να μετρηθεί η επίδοση των μαθητών, ο τύπος προσωπικότητας, το Στιλ μάθησης και η ποιότητα διδασκαλίας μετρήθηκαν με ερωτηματολόγια. Ο χρόνος εμπλοκής των μαθητών μετρήθηκε με τη χρήση ενός καινούριου εργαλείου που αναπτύχθηκε από αυτή την έρευνα, το Εργαλείο Παρακολούθησης Μαθητή για καταγραφή Χρόνου Εμπλοκής κατά τη διάρκεια παρακολούθησης δύο μαθημάτων. Με την αξιοποίηση της Πολυεπίπεδης ανάλυσης παλινδρόμησης, φάνηκε ότι συγκεκριμένοι παράγοντες του χρόνου εμπλοκής, της Προσωπικότητας, στιλ μάθησης, και της ποιότητας διδασκαλίας είχαν θετική επίδραση στα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα. Επιπρόσθετα, για τη μελέτη των έμμεσων επιδράσεων των μεταβλητών της έρευνας στα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα μέσω του χρόνου εμπλοκής, αξιοποιήθηκαν Πολυεπίπεδα δομικά μοντέλα εξίσωσης. Από αυτά φάνηκαν ότι η ποιότητα διδασκαλίας έχει έμμεση επίδραση στα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα μέσω του χρόνου εμπλοκής, ενώ αναφορικά με τον τύπο προσωπικότητας και το στιλ μάθησης, δεν βρέθηκαν παράγοντες που να επηρεάζουν τον χρόνο εμπλοκής. Τα ευρήματα της έρευνας τονίζουν τη σημασία της ποιότητας διδασκαλίας, καθώς φάνηκε για πρώτη φορά ότι επηρεάζει τα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα όχι μόνο άμεσα αλλά και έμμεσα μέσω του χρόνου εμπλοκής. Επιπροσθέτως, φάνηκε ότι ορισμένοι τύποι προσωπικότητας και στιλ μάθησης επηρεάζουν τα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα. Παρόλα αυτά, δεν βρέθηκαν έμμεσες επιπτώσεις μέσω του χρόνου εμπλοκής. Ακόμη, αυτή η έρευνα αναδεικνύει την περιπλοκότητα της έννοιας του χρόνου εμπλοκής. Δείχνει ότι ο χρόνος εμπλοκής είναι πολυδιάστατος και παρουσιάζει νέες πληροφορίες αναφορικά με τις σχέσεις αυτών των διαστάσεων με την ποιότητα διδασκαλίας και τα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα. Επίσης, ένα νέο εργαλείο δημιουργήθηκε, το Εργαλείο Παρακολούθησης Μαθητή για καταγραφή Χρόνου Εμπλοκής, το οποίο φάνηκε ότι είναι έγκυρο και κατάλληλο για να μετρήσει τις διαστάσεις του χρόνου εμπλοκής. Τέλος, συζητούνται οι επιπτώσεις των ευρημάτων της έρευνας για την ανάπτυξη του τομέα της αποτελεσματικότητας. Συγκεκριμένα, γίνεται αναφορά στους κυριότερους περιορισμούς της έρευνας και γίνονται εισηγήσεις για περεταίρω έρευνα. This study is concerned with students’ time on task. It examines if and how it affects student achievement gains, and if it is affected by other student- or classroom-level factors. Specifically, this study investigates whether the teacher effectiveness factors included in the dynamic model and student-level factors associated with the psychological perspective of educational effectiveness research (i.e. personality traits and thinking styles), have indirect effects on student achievement through time on task. Additionally, this study explores the extent to which the teacher factors included in the dynamic model and the students’ personality traits and thinking styles, can influence student achievement. To address the aims of the study, participants were selected through stage sampling. The procedure resulted in a total of 27 primary schools, 107 teachers and 1718 students. Questionnaires were used to measure personality traits, thinking styles and quality of teaching. The students’ time on task was measured with the use of a new instrument developed by this study, the Instrument for Student Observation measuring Time on Task (ISOTOT), during two classroom observations. With the use of Multilevel Regression Analysis, it was found that certain factors of Time on Task, Personality Traits, Thinking Styles, and Quality of Teaching have effect on student achievement. Additionally, to examine the indirect effects of the variables on student achievement through time on task, Multilevel Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) Analysis was employed. SEM analysis showed that Quality of Teaching has indirect effect on student achievement through time on task. However, no indirect effects of Personality Traits or Thinking Styles on student achievement through time on task were found. Finally, SEM analysis confirmed that certain factors of Personality Traits, Thinking Styles, Time on Task, and Quality of Teaching have direct effects on student achievement. The findings of this study highlight the importance of quality of teaching, as it has been shown for the first time that it affects student achievement gains, not only directly, but also indirectly through time on task. In addition to that, it was found that certain personality traits and thinking styles affect student achievement directly. However, no indirect effects on student achievement through time on task were detected. Additionally, this study emphasizes the complexity of the construct of time on task. It illustrates that time on task is multidimensional and provides new information regarding the relations of these dimensions with both quality of teaching and student achievement. Furthermore, a new instrument was developed, the Instrument for Student Observation measuring Time on Task (ISOTOT), which was found to be valid and suitable to measure the dimensions of time on task. Finally, implications of the findings for the development of the field are drawn. Specifically, the main limitations of the study are discussed and suggestions for further research are put forward. In addition, implications regarding policy for quality of teaching, time on task and teacher professional development are discussed. Concluding, suggestions regarding the use of the new Instrument for Student Observation measuring Time on Task by researchers, teachers, trainers and evaluators are made.

Η έρευνα αυτή πραγματεύεται ένα πολύ σημαντικό θέμα που αφορά στην επίδραση του περιβάλλοντος μάθησης και των χαρακτηριστικών της προσωπικότητας σε όλες τις μορφές εκφοβισμού (σωματικός, λεκτικός, κοινωνικός/έμμεσος, ψηφιακός), αλλά και στις αρνητικές επιπτώσεις που έχει το φαινόμενο στην ψυχική υγεία των εφήβων (συμπτώματα κατάθλιψης, ανησυχίας και άγχους), από τη σκοπιά της εκπαιδευτικής αποτελεσματικότητας. Συγκεκριμένα, αυτή είναι η πρώτη έρευνα διεθνώς που εξετάζει την επίδραση του σχολείου και της τάξης όχι μόνο στις διάφορες μορφές εκφοβισμού, αλλά και στις στρατηγικές άμυνας που χρησιμοποιούν οι έφηβοι στην προσπάθειά τους να χειριστούν περιστατικά ψηφιακού εκφοβισμού και στις επιπτώσεις που έχουν αυτά στην ψυχική τους υγεία. Η έρευνα αυτή επιτρέπει τον έλεγχο της εγκυρότητας του Δυναμικού Μοντέλου Εκπαιδευτικής Αποτελεσματικότητας και ειδικότερα των παραγόντων που βρίσκονται σε επίπεδο σχολείου. Διερευνά, επίσης, την επίδραση των χαρακτηριστικών της προσωπικότητας σε όλες τις μορφές εκφοβισμού, αλλά και το πώς σχετίζονται τόσο τα χαρακτηριστικά της προσωπικότητας, όσο και οι στρατηγικές άμυνας με την ψυχική υγεία των εφήβων. Η έρευνα αυτή είναι νατουραλιστική στο είδος της και περιλαμβάνει δύο μετρήσεις (αρχική και τελική). Σε αυτήν έλαβαν μέρος σχολεία Μέσης Εκπαίδευσης (Δημόσια Γυμνάσια). Στην πρώτη φάση της έρευνας, που αποσκοπούσε στην εγκυροποίηση ερευνητικών εργαλείων, συμμετείχαν στο σύνολό τους 920 μαθητές που φοιτούσαν στην Α’, Β’ και Γ’ τάξη. Στην κύρια φάση της έρευνας συμμετείχαν 950 μαθητές, οι οποίοι φοιτούσαν στη Β’ και Γ’ τάξη. Για τη μέτρηση των διαφορετικών πτυχών που αφορούν στην πολιτική του σχολείου, όπως περιγράφονται στο δυναμικό μοντέλο, χορηγήθηκε ένα ερωτηματολόγιο σε όλους τους εκπαιδευτικούς που εργάζονταν στα εν λόγω σχολεία. Στην έρευνα έγινε χρήση ποσοτικής μεθοδολογίας και αξιοποιήθηκαν σύγχρονες και εξειδικευμένες μέθοδοι ανάλυσης δεδομένων. Συγκεκριμένα, η εγκυροποίηση των εργαλείων που στηρίζονταν σε διατακτικές κλίμακες έγινε με τη χρήση του μοντέλου Rasch, ενώ η εγκυροποίηση των εργαλείων που χρησιμοποιούσαν κλίμακα Likert έγινε με Μοντέλα Δομικών Εξισώσεων (Structural Equation Modelling). Για την ανάλυση και διερεύνηση των στόχων της έρευνας έγινε χρήση πολυεπίπεδων αναλύσεων και Μοντέλων Δομικών Εξισώσεων. Τα αποτελέσματα αυτής της έρευνας έδειξαν ότι υπήρχαν σχολεία που ήταν πιο αποτελεσματικά σε σύγκριση με άλλα, στον χειρισμό περιστατικών εκφοβισμού σε σχέση με τις κλίμακες που εξετάστηκαν (π.χ. μαθητές που ήταν θύτες ή θύματα εκφοβιστικής συμπεριφοράς μέσω παραδοσιακών μορφών εκφοβισμού). Ακόμα, σχετικά με τους μαθητές που έπεσαν θύματα ψηφιακού εκφοβισμού, η επίδραση του σχολείου και της τάξης δεν βρέθηκε να είναι στατιστικά σημαντική. Επιπλέον, τα αποτελέσματα έδειξαν ότι υπήρχαν τάξεις που ήταν πιο αποτελεσματικές από άλλες στο να βοηθήσουν τους μαθητές τους να αναπτύξουν συγκεκριμένες στρατηγικές άμυνας (π.χ. “Distal Advice”, “Retaliation” και “Helplessness/Self-blame”). Αξίζει να αναφερθεί ότι το σχολείο και η τάξη δεν φάνηκαν να έχουν επίδραση στις υπόλοιπες στρατηγικές άμυνας που εξετάστηκαν σε αυτή την έρευνα (π.χ. Close Support, Assertiveness, Acting Ignoring και Technical Coping). Μια επιπλέον συνεισφορά αυτής της έρευνας είναι ότι εξετάζει την επίδραση του σχολείου και της τάξης στην ψυχική υγεία των εφήβων (π.χ. συμπτώματα κατάθλιψης, ανησυχίας και άγχους). Τα αποτελέσματα έδειξαν ότι ούτε το σχολείο, αλλά ούτε και η τάξη είχαν επίδραση στην ψυχική υγεία. Σχετικά με την επίδραση των χαρακτηριστικών της προσωπικότητας, τα αποτελέσματα αυτής της έρευνας έδειξαν ότι χαμηλά ποσοστά «Συγκαταβατικότητας» και υψηλά ποσοστά «Νευρωτισμού» μπορούν να προβλέψουν εάν κάποιος μαθητής μπορεί να είναι θύτης ή μπορεί να πέσει θύμα παραδοσιακών μορφών εκφοβισμού. Όσον αφορά στην επίδραση των χαρακτηριστικών της προσωπικότητας στα θύματα ψηφιακού εκφοβισμού, τα αποτελέσματα έδειξαν ότι η «Συγκαταβατικότητα» έχει αρνητική επίδραση, ενώ ο «Νευρωτισμός» θετική επίδραση. Επιπρόσθετα, τα αποτελέσματα των Μοντέλων Δομικών Εξισώσεων έδειξαν ότι η «Συγκαταβατικότητα» έχει έμμεση αρνητική επίδραση στην ψυχική υγεία μέσω της στρατηγικής άμυνας “Retaliation”. Ακόμη, η «Εξωστρέφεια» βρέθηκε να έχει έμμεση αρνητική επίδραση στην ψυχική υγεία μέσω της στρατηγικής άμυνας “Helplessness/Self-blame”. Επιπλέον, οι στρατηγικές άμυνας “Retaliation” και “Helplessness/Self-blame” φάνηκαν να σχετίζονται θετικά με την ψυχική υγεία. Τέλος, η «Συγκαταβατικότητα» και η «Εξωστρέφεια» φάνηκαν να σχετίζονται αρνητικά με τις στρατηγικές άμυνας “Retaliation” και “Helplessness/Self-blame”, αντίστοιχα. Κατά συνέπεια, λαμβάνοντας υπ’ όψιν τα αποτελέσματα αυτά, θα μπορούσε να δοθεί περισσότερη έμφαση τόσο από ερευνητές, όσο και από φορείς χάραξης πολιτικής, στις στρατηγικές άμυνας που χρησιμοποιούν οι έφηβοι στην προσπάθειά τους να χειριστούν περιστατικά ψηφιακού εκφοβισμού, μιας και αυτές σχετίζονται θετικά με την ψυχική τους υγεία. Bullying in schools is not considered a new phenomenon. Early research on bullying was mainly concerned with the following three traditional forms of bullying: a) physical, b) verbal, and c) indirect, relational and social aggression. Over the past two decades, emphasis has also been given on a new form of bullying (i.e., cyberbullying), which makes use of the diverse range of technology now available. In addition, research on coping strategies that adolescents use to deal with this new form of online aggression is as young as the research in the field of cyberbullying itself. Based on the unique characteristics of cyberbullying, it is considered crucial to examine how adolescents cope with the experiences of cyber-victimisation and identify those coping strategies or personality traits that are related to the negative undesirable outcomes that these experiences may have on their emotional well-being (i.e., symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress). As bullying is a group process, a lot of research has been conducted to investigate the impact of improving the school learning environment in an attempt to reduce this aggressive phenomenon in schools. Longitudinal studies have shown that students who are victimised feel a sense of helplessness that increases over time. These students may need adults at school to help them respond to bullying incidents, support them, and provide a model of appropriate social behaviour. Furthermore, taking in mind the contribution of international longitudinal research in the field of educational effectiveness, some recent effectiveness studies made use of the Dynamic Model of Educational Effectiveness in order to support schools in facing and reducing bullying. These studies revealed that factors included in the model are associated with the effectiveness status of the schools in regard to reducing bullying. These studies, though, have focused only on the three traditional forms of bullying and were not concerned with the extent to which students have ever experienced cyberbullying. In addition, these studies did not focus on the coping strategies students use to deal with cyberbullying or the negative impact that these experiences may have on their emotional well-being (i.e., symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress). In this context, this study was the first (as far as we are aware) that aimed to measure school effectiveness regarding bullying behaviour (including cyberbullying), which can be attributed to differences in the school learning environment factor, as it is described in the dynamic model. Besides, another aim of this study was to examine whether schools and/or classrooms have an effect on helping students develop specific coping strategies, which would help them deal with cyberbullying incidents. Also, this study aimed to examine whether schools and/or classrooms have an effect on the emotional well-being of students (i.e., symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress). Another aim of this study was to examine whether specific personality traits can predict both bullying perpetration, as well as victimisation via all forms of bullying. Moreover, this study used a multilevel framework to examine the phenomenon of bullying by investigating the impact of personality characteristics of students in order to identify whether specific personality traits are related to coping strategies and to symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Thus, based on the results of this study, more information regarding the validity of the dynamic model will be provided and suggestions for policy development will be made. In an attempt to measure the main variables of this study, as described above, The Revised Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire (OBVQ; was used to collect data on the three traditional forms of bullying. The OBVQ was previously tested in the context of Cyprus and found to have . In addition, The Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21; Lovibond & Lovibond, 1995), an already validated instrument that measures symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress, that has been previously tested in different contexts was also used. Regarding an instrument measuring the personality characteristics of students, an already validated instrument was selected that was previously used in the context of Cyprus, which provided good psychometric properties ). Moreover, in order to measure the variables that refer to the school-level factors of the dynamic model, an already validated instrument was selected (Creemers & Kyriakides, 2012), which was used in previous studies where the validity of the dynamic model was tested. Nevertheless, an instrument measuring cyberbullying was not available. Therefore, two instruments were selected that were used in previous studies in other countries in order to measure cyberbullying. Both instruments were tested in a pilot study prior to the first phase of the data collection. The first instrument measured the extent to which students are either bullies or victims of cyberbullying (i.e., ), while the second instrument measured how students would cope with hypothetical experiences of cyberbullying and if they have ever experienced it (i.e., . For the purpose of the pilot study, two secondary schools were selected, and students who participated were attending Grade 7, Grade 8 and Grade 9. One of the schools that participated in the pilot study was later excluded from the school sample of the main study. Based on the results of the pilot study the revised version of The Coping with Cyberbullying Questionnaire (CWCBQ; Sticca et al., 2015) was selected to be used. For the main study, secondary schools were selected to participate. Specifically, schools’ principals who expressed their willingness to participate were informed about the procedure of the data collection, while confidentiality issues were taken into consideration. The final version of all the instruments was administered to students attending Grade 8 and Grade 9 at the beginning of the school year in 2016 (n=936), and at the end of the school year 2017 (n=950). For the measurement of the different aspects of schools’ policy, as they are described in the dynamic model, a questionnaire was administered to all teachers in each participating school in May 2017 (n=107), in order to give time to new full-time teachers to become familiar with all the aspects of their schools’ policy. In order to analyse the data collected both for traditional forms of bullying and cyberbullying, the extended logistic model Rasch was used. Furthermore, the validity of students’ responses to the instruments that measured depression, anxiety, and stress, as well as the personality characteristics, were checked by using Structural Equation Modelling techniques. Moreover, separate multilevel regression techniques were used to identify the effects of the school and/or classroom, as well as the effects of the school-level factors of the dynamic model on students who were bullies or victims via traditional forms of bullying, on students who experienced cyberbullying, on the coping strategies they use to deal with cyberbullying, on their emotional well-being (i.e., symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress), and on their personality traits. Structural Equation Modelling techniques were also used to identify whether specific personality traits are related to coping strategies and to symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. The main findings of this study indicated that there were schools which were found to be more effective than others concerning bullying behaviour in regard to the scales that were tested (i.e., students who were “Bullies” or “Victims” of bullying via traditional forms). Furthermore, regarding students who experienced cyberbullying, the effect of the school and classroom was not found to be statistically significant. Additionally, the results indicated that there were classrooms (i.e., teachers) which were more effective than others in helping students develop specific coping strategies (i.e., “Distal Advice”, “Retaliation”, and “Helplessness/ Self-blame”). It was also found that there was no school or classroom effect on the rest of the coping strategies that were examined in this study (i.e., Close Support, Assertiveness, Acting Ignoring, and Technical Coping). Another contribution of this study is that it investigates the effect of the school and/or classroom on symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Results showed that there was no school or classroom effect on students’ emotional well-being. In addition, regarding the impact of personality traits on traditional forms of bullying, the results of this study indicated that low levels of “Agreeableness” and high levels of “Neuroticism” may predict both bullying perpetration as well as victimisation via traditional forms. Regarding the impact of personality traits on students who experienced cyberbullying, the results showed that “Agreeableness” has a negative effect on cyberbullying behaviour, whereas “Neuroticism” has a positive effect. Finally, the results of SEM analyses revealed that “Agreeableness” has an indirect effect on “General Distress” (i.e., symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress) through the coping strategy “Retaliation”. In addition, “Extraversion” was found to have an indirect effect on “General Distress” through the coping strategy “Helplessness/Self-blame”. Also, “Retaliation” and “Helplessness/Self-blame” were found to have an effect on “General Distress”, while the personality traits of “Agreeableness” and “Extraversion” were negatively related to “General Distress”. Additionally, the personality trait of “Agreeableness” was found to be negatively associated with the coping strategy “Retaliation”. Similarly, “Extraversion” was found to be negatively associated with the coping strategy “Helplessness/Self-blame”. Thus, based on these results, more emphasis should be given by researchers and policymakers on the coping strategies students use to deal with cyberbullying, which have a more direct effect on their “General Distress”, rather than their personality characteristics. Implications of findings for theory and practice are finally drawn.

Διερευνά επίσης τη συνεισφορά των τριών αυτών τύπων ηγεσίας / διεύθυνσης που περιλαμβάνονται στο full-range leadership model των Avolio και Bass σε σχέση με τη δυνατότητα των εκπαιδευτικών να επιλύσουν τα προβλήματα που αντιμετωπίζουν, μέσω της συμβολής του διευθυντή τους. Η έρευνα διενεργήθηκε με τη χρήση ποσοτικής μεθόδου. Στην έρευνα έλαβαν μέρος 683 καθηγητές 32 Λυκείων από τις πέντε επαρχίες της Κύπρου. Οι συμμετέχοντες εκπαιδευτικοί κλήθηκαν να συμπληρώσουν ερωτηματολόγιο που περιελάμβανε το ερωτηματολόγιο Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) το ερωτηματολόγιο του Bandura για την αυτο-αποτελεσματικότητα των εκπαιδευτικών, και ένα τρίτο μέρος που σχεδιάστηκε για τη διερεύνηση των προβλημάτων που αντιμετωπίζουν οι εκπαιδευτικοί και της συμβολής του διευθυντή για τον περιορισμό των προβλημάτων αυτών. Τα ερευνητικά δεδομένα αναλύθηκαν προκειμένου να δοθούν απαντήσεις στα ερευνητικά ερωτήματα. Η ανάλυση των δεδομένων έγινε με τη χρήση του στατιστικού πακέτου SPSS. Αρχικά, στη διατριβή περιλαμβάνονται αναλυτικά τα δεδομένα της περιγραφικής στατιστικής ανάλυσης με τη χρήση στατιστικών πινάκων. Η επιβεβαιωτική παραγοντοποίηση των δηλώσεων της κλείδας MLQ έδειξε δύο ισχυρούς παράγοντες: ένα ενιαίο παράγοντα μετασχηματιστικής και συναλλακτικής ηγεσίας, και ένα παράγοντα παθητικής διεύθυνσης. Η διερευνητική παραγοντοποίηση των δηλώσεων της κλίμακας του Bandura δημιούργησε τρεις ισχυρούς παράγοντες αυτο-αποτελεσματικότητας που αφορούν (1) στη διαχείριση των μαθητών, (2) στη συνεργασία γονέων και εκπαιδευτικών, και (3) στον επηρεασμό των διαδικασιών λήψης αποφάσεων. Οι συσχετιστικές αναλύσεις που ακολούθησαν δείχνουν ότι ο ενιαίος παράγοντας μετασχηματιστικής και συναλλακτικής ηγεσίας μπορεί να προβλέψει τον παράγοντα αυτό-αποτελεσματικότητας του Bandura. Εντοπίζεται επίσης σημαντική συσχέτιση του ενιαίου παράγοντα μετασχηματιστικής και συναλλακτικής ηγεσίας με τον περιορισμό των προβλημάτων που αντιμετωπίζουν οι εκπαιδευτικοί. Χρησιμοποιώντας latent group analysis διακρίναμε τα υποκείμενα που έλαβαν μέρος στην έρευνα σε τρεις κατηγορίες: σε αυτούς που θεωρούν ότι ο διευθυντής τους μεταχειρίζεται περισσότερο μετασχηματιστικές συμπεριφορές ηγεσίας, σε αυτούς που θεωρούν ότι ο διευθυντής τους μεταχειρίζεται περισσότερο συναλλακτικές συμπεριφορές ηγεσίας, και σε αυτούς που θεωρούν ότι ο διευθυντής τους μεταχειρίζεται περισσότερο συμπεριφορές παθητικής διεύθυνσης. Υπό αυτό το πρίσμα βρέθηκε ότι οι εκπαιδευτικοί που θεωρούν ότι ο διευθυντής τους μεταχειρίζεται περισσότερο μετασχηματιστικές συμπεριφορές ηγεσίας δήλωσαν υψηλότερο βαθμό πεποίθησης της αυτο-αποτελεσματικότητάς τους και στους τρεις παράγοντες του Bandura, και αναγνώρισαν επίσης μεγαλύτερη συμβολή στον διευθυντή τους, ως προς την επιτυχία των προσπαθειών που καταβάλλει για περιορισμό των προβλημάτων που αντιμετωπίζουν οι εκπαιδευτικοί. Τα ευρήματα της έρευνας κρίνονται ιδιαιτέρως σημαντικά, καθότι αναδεικνύουν τη σημαντικότητα του συνδυασμού της μετασχηματιστικής και συναλλακτικής ηγεσίας για τις πεποιθήσεις αυτό-αποτελεσματικότητας των εκπαιδευτικών στα λύκεια της Κύπρου. This dissertation examines the link between transformational leadership, transactional leadership, and laissez-faire leadership, and the self-efficacy beliefs of teachers of upper-secondary schools in Cyprus. It also investigates the link between these three types of leadership and/or management styles, as these are included in Avolio and Bass's full-range leadership model, and the teachers’ ability to cope with the problems they face at the school unit. The research was conducted using a quantitative research method. A survey was conducted with data collected from 683 teachers from 32 upper secondary high schools in the five provinces of Cyprus. Participating teachers were asked to complete a questionnaire, which included the short version of the Multi-factor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ), Bandura’s questionnaire for the measurement of teacher self-efficacy beliefs, and a third component, which was designed by the researcher to investigate teachers’ problems and the school leader’s contribution to solving and/or addressing these problems. The research data were analyzed to answer the research questions. Data were analyzed using the SPSS statistical package. Initially, the thesis presents the data of descriptive statistical analysis using statistical tables. The confirmatory factor analysis of the MLQ statements pointed to two factors: a single transformative and transactional leadership factor, and a passive leadership factor. The exploratory factor analysis of Bandura-scale statements resulted in three self-efficacy factors related to (1) student management, (2) parent-teacher collaboration, and (3) influence on decision-making processes. The statistical analyses showed that the single transformative and transactional leadership factor can predict the Bandura self-efficacy factor. There is also a significant link between the single transformational and transactional leadership factor, and the resolution of problems faced by teachers. Using latent group analysis, the research participants were divided into three categories: those who believe that their school leader exhibits more transformational leadership behaviors, those who believe that their school leader exhibits more transactional leadership behaviors, and those who believe that their school leader exhibits more laissez-faire management behaviors. In this context, it was found that teachers who believe that their school leader exhibits more transformational leadership behaviors reported a higher degree of self-efficacy beliefs in all three of Bandura’s factors. Teachers who consider their school leader to be transformative find that he/she helps them more to address and resolve the problems they face at the school unit. The findings of the research are particularly important as they highlight the importance of combining transformational and transactional leadership in the attempt to influence the self-efficacy beliefs of upper-secondary school teachers in Cyprus.

Πεποιθήσεις των φοιτητών για τις σημειωτικές αναπαραστάσεις, δ. Πεποιθήσεις των φοιτητών για τη σημαντικότητα των σημειωτικών αναπαραστάσεων στις σπουδές τους, ε. Πεποιθήσεις των φοιτητών για τη σημαντικότητα των σημειωτικών αναπαραστάσεων των εκθετικών και λογαριθμικών συναρτήσεων στις σπουδές τους), όσο και τις Πεποιθήσεις Επάρκειας (α. Το Ερωτηματολόγιο με τις δηλώσεις που εξέταζε τον συναισθηματικό τομέα χορηγήθηκε κατά το πρώτο εξάμηνο (χειμερινό) της ακαδημαϊκής περιόδου 2015-2016 και η διάρκεια συμπλήρωσής του ήταν 30 λεπτά. Κατά το δεύτερο εξάμηνο (εαρινό) του ίδιου έτους, χορηγήθηκε στους ίδιους φοιτητές το Δοκίμιο το οποίο περιλάμβανε έργα σημειωτικών αναπαραστάσεων των εκθετικών και λογαριθμικών συναρτήσεων, τα οποία εστίαζαν στις εξής διαστάσεις: α. Ορισμός, β. Αναγνώριση, γ. Μετάφραση και δ. Επίλυση Προβλήματος, με σκοπό τη διερεύνηση της επίδοσης των φοιτητών της Σχολής Οικονομικών και Διοίκησης στα έργα αυτά. Μετά τη συλλογή των δεδομένων, ακολουθεί η ανάλυσή τους, με απώτερο σκοπό την αποσαφήνιση και απάντηση των ερευνητικών ερωτημάτων. Η ανάλυση των δεδομένων που συλλέχθηκαν περιλαμβάνει περιγραφική στατιστική ανάλυση για τη συνοπτική και αποτελεσματική παρουσίαση των δεδομένων μέσω στατιστικών πινάκων με τη χρήση του στατιστικού πακέτου SPSS. Στόχος είναι τα δεδομένα αυτά να αναλυθούν, να οργανωθούν επαρκώς με κατάλληλα μέτρα (θέσης και διασποράς) και να ποσοτικοποιηθεί η τάση των αποτελεσμάτων, ώστε να αναδειχθεί όλη η πληροφορία που περιέχεται στα δεδομένα για να γίνουν κατανοητά. Περιλαμβάνει επίσης στατιστική ανάλυση παραγόντων από την οποία προέκυψαν τα δομικά μοντέλα για πιο ενδελεχή και εμπεριστατωμένη επεξεργασία δεδομένων, ικανή να οδηγήσει σε πολύ χρήσιμα ευρήματα που θα βοηθήσουν στην εξέλιξη και στην περαιτέρω βελτίωση των διδακτικών προσεγγίσεων με τη χρήση του στατιστικού πακέτου EQS. Επιπλέον, πραγματοποιήθηκαν αναλύσεις ομοιότητας και συνεπαγωγής ώστε να αναδειχθούν οι σχέσεις μεταξύ των μεταβλητών με τη χρήση του στατιστικού πακέτου CHIC. Στη συνέχεια και με τη χρήση των αναλύσεων που προηγήθηκαν εξήχθησαν τα κυριότερα συμπεράσματα σε σχέση με το συναισθηματικό και το γνωστικό τομέα για τα μαθηματικά και τις σημειωτικές αναπαραστάσεις γενικότερα, καθώς και σημειωτικές αναπαραστάσεις εκθετικών και λογαριθμικών συναρτήσεων ειδικότερα. Ιδιαίτερη έμφαση δόθηκε στα συμπεράσματα που απορρέουν από τα διαγράμματα ομοιότητας και συνεπαγωγής, τόσο για τον συναισθηματικό όσο και τον γνωστικό τομέα. Επιπλέον, εξήχθησαν συμπεράσματα σχετικά με την επίδοση των φοιτητών. Ιδιαίτερη βαρύτητα δόθηκε επίσης στα δομικά μοντέλα τα οποία αναδεικνύουν τόσο τη δομή των πεποιθήσεων και των πεποιθήσεων επάρκειας για το θέμα που διερευνάται, όσο και οι σχέσεις μεταξύ των παραγόντων που αφορούν στο συναισθηματικό και το γνωστικό τομέα. The purpose of this doctoral thesis is to examine important aspects of the affective domain field, which, according to the literature, appear to be an important factor associated with success / failure in learning mathematical concepts and to propose structural models that describe beliefs and self-efficacy beliefs of students of the School of Economics and Management, both on the nature of mathematics and its relevance to their studies and their future careers, and on semiotic representations in general as well as semiotic representations of exponential and logarithmic functions in particular. An additional aim of the present work is to study the cognitive field, by examining students' performance in tasks/assignments which are mainly oriented to semiotic representations of the concept of function. Subsequently, the research attempts to explore the possible interactions between the emotional (beliefs and aptitudes) and the cognitive (performance) domain, with the aim of developing a structural model that will be useful to teachers in reforming their teaching methods appropriately so that students understanding better the mathematical concepts. To achieve the first objective of the research a Likert-five point scale (one=strongly disagree, five= strongly agree) questionnaire was compiled in order to investigate both the students’ beliefs (a. Students 'beliefs about the nature of mathematics, b. Students' beliefs about the importance of mathematics in their studies, c. Students' beliefs about semiotic representations, d. Students' beliefs about the importance of semiotic representations in their studies, e. Students' beliefs about the importance of semiotic representations of exponentials and logarithmic functions in their studies) as well as self-efficacy beliefs (a. Students' self-efficacy beliefs in mathematics; b. Students' self-efficacy beliefs in semiotic representations; c. Students' self-efficacy beliefs in semiotic representations of exponential and logarithmic functions) to students who are completing their first (1st) and fourth (4th) year of studies at the University of Cyprus School of Economics and Management. The questionnaire with the statements examining the affective-domain was administered during the first semester (fall-winter) of the 2015-2016 academic year and its duration was 30 minutes. During the second semester of the same year, an assignment was given to the same students, which included semiotic representations of exponential and logarithmic functions, which focused on the following dimensions: a. Definition, b. Recognition, c. Translation and d. Problem Solving, in order to investigate the performance of the students of the School of Economics and Management in these tasks. Following the data collection, the analysis was followed, with the aim of clarifying and answering the research questions. The analysis of the collected data includes descriptive statistical analysis to summarize and efficiently present the data through statistical tables using the SPSS statistical package. The aim was to analyse this data, to organize them adequately with appropriate measures (location and dispersion) and to quantify the trend of the results so that all the information contained in the data can be understood. The analysis also comprise a factor analysis that have led to the structural models for more detailed data processing, capable of leading to very useful findings that will help in developing and further improve the teaching approaches, using the EQS statistical package. In addition, similarity and implicative analyses were conducted to identify the relationships between variables using the CHIC statistical package. Consequently, using the preceding analyses, the main conclusions regarding the affective and cognitive domain for mathematics, semiotic representations in general, as well as semiotic representations of exponential and logarithmic function in particular were derived. Certain emphasis was given to the conclusions drawn from the similarity and implicative diagrams for both the affective and cognitive domains. In addition, conclusions were drawn on student performance. Particular attention was also given to structural models that highlight both the structure of beliefs and self-efficacy beliefs of the subject under investigation, as well as the relationships between affective and cognitive factors.

Η έμφαση που δίνεται στη διδασκαλία για την αξιολόγηση των εκπαιδευτικών δικαιολογείται από τα αποτελέσματα ερευνών, που πραγματοποιήθηκαν στο χώρο της εκπαιδευτικής αποτελεσματικότητας, τα οποία έδειξαν ότι το τι πραγματικά κάνουν οι εκπαιδευτικοί στην τάξη είναι ο πιο σημαντικός παράγοντας στο επίπεδο της τάξης που σχετίζεται με τα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα. Κατά τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες έχουν αναπτυχθεί αρκετά θεωρητικά πλαίσια για τη μελέτη και την ανάλυση της διδασκαλίας και έχουν πραγματοποιηθεί αρκετές έρευνες που διερεύνησαν θέματα που σχετίζονται με την εγκυρότητα και την αξιοπιστία δεδομένων που αφορούν στην ποιότητα της διδασκαλίας. Ωστόσο, δεν κατέστη ακόμη ξεκάθαρο εάν η μέτρηση των διδακτικών δεξιοτήτων εξαρτάται από το συγκείμενο της τάξης και πιο συγκεκριμένα εάν οι εκπαιδευτικοί παρουσιάζουν τις ίδιες γενικευμένες (generic) δεξιότητες διδασκαλίας όταν διδάσκουν σε διαφορετικές τάξεις. Στο πλαίσιο αυτό, η παρούσα έρευνα διερευνά κατά πόσο μπορούν να παραχθούν παρόμοια σκορ για τις γενικευμένες διδακτικές δεξιότητες των ίδιων εκπαιδευτικών της δευτεροβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης, μέσω της παρακολούθησης της διδασκαλίας Μαθηματικών σε διαφορετικές τάξεις μαθητών (ίδιας ηλικιακής ομάδας) και μέσω των αξιολογήσεων της συμπεριφοράς των εκπαιδευτικών στην τάξη από τους μαθητές των τάξεων αυτών. Όσον αφορά στο θεωρητικό πλαίσιο της έρευνας, χρησιμοποιήθηκε το δυναμικό μοντέλο της εκπαιδευτικής αποτελεσματικότητας, το οποίο αναφέρεται σε οχτώ γενικευμένους παράγοντες του επιπέδου της τάξης που περιγράφουν το διδακτικό ρόλο των εκπαιδευτικών. Δεδομένου ότι οι προηγούμενες έρευνες που εξέτασαν την εγκυρότητα αυτού του μοντέλου πραγματοποιήθηκαν σε Δημοτικά σχολεία και σε Νηπιαγωγεία, επιπρόσθετος στόχος της παρούσας έρευνας είναι η διαπίστωση της επίδρασης του κάθε παράγοντα που περιλαμβάνεται στο επίπεδο της τάξης, καθώς και των διαστάσεών του, στην πρόοδο των μαθητών της δευτεροβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης. Επιπρόσθετα, μέσω της συλλογής δεδομένων από περισσότερες από μία τάξεις στις οποίες διδάσκουν οι ίδιοι εκπαιδευτικοί, η έρευνα αυτή στοχεύει επίσης στη διάκριση της επίδρασης του επιπέδου της τάξης από την επίδραση του επιπέδου του εκπαιδευτικού, καθώς επίσης και στον εντοπισμό του επιπέδου που μπορεί να ερμηνεύσει το μεγαλύτερο ποσοστό της διασποράς στα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα των μαθητών. Το δείγμα της έρευνας επιλέγηκε με τη βοήθεια της μεθόδου της κατά στάδιο δειγματοληψίας. Συγκεκριμένα, επιλέγηκαν αρχικά 12 Γυμνάσια. Στη συνέχεια, επιλέγηκαν όλοι οι εκπαιδευτικοί των σχολείων που συμμετείχαν στην έρευνα, οι οποίοι δίδασκαν μαθηματικά σε τουλάχιστον δύο τάξεις μαθητών Α’ ή/και Β’ Γυμνασίου. Στην έρευνα αυτή συμμετείχαν 26 εκπαιδευτικοί και 915 μαθητές των τάξεων (n=57) των εκπαιδευτικών που συμμετείχαν στην έρευνα. Η επίδοση των μαθητών στα Μαθηματικά μετρήθηκε στην αρχή και στο τέλος της σχολικής χρονιάς 2014-2015 με τη χρήση γραπτών δοκιμίων αξιολόγησης. Τα γραπτά δοκίμια αναπτύχθηκαν και εγκυροποιήθηκαν σε πιλοτική έρευνα που είχε διεξαχθεί την προηγούμενη χρονιά (2013-2014). Η συμπεριφορά των εκπαιδευτικών στην τάξη μετρήθηκε μέσω παρατηρήσεων με τη χρήση εργαλείων παρατήρησης χαμηλού (low-inference) και υψηλού συμπερασμού (high-inference), καθώς και μέσω ερωτηματολογίου που δόθηκε στους μαθητές. Για τη διερεύνηση της συνέπειας της διδακτικής συμπεριφοράς των εκπαιδευτικών σε διαφορετικές τάξεις διεξήχθη μελέτη γενικευσιμότητας (generalisability study). Τα αποτελέσματα των αναλύσεων αυτών κατέδειξαν ότι οι εκπαιδευτικοί της δευτεροβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης δείχνουν συνέπεια στη διδακτική τους συμπεριφορά σε διαφορετικές τάξεις για τους περισσότερους παράγοντες του επιπέδου της τάξης του δυναμικού μοντέλου, ανεξάρτητα από το εργαλείο που χρησιμοποιήθηκε για τη μέτρησή τους. Ωστόσο, η μελέτη γενικευσιμότητας έδειξε ότι για την πλειοψηφία των διαστάσεων των παραγόντων του προσανατολισμού και της διαχείρισης της απειθαρχίας, τα σκορ των εκπαιδευτικών είναι γενικεύσιμα στο επίπεδο της τάξης και όχι στο επίπεδο του εκπαιδευτικού. Επιπλέον, φάνηκε ότι όταν ο ίδιος ο εκπαιδευτικός αξιολογείται σε διαφορετικές τάξεις, το είδος του εργαλείου που θα χρησιμοποιηθεί για τη μέτρηση των διδακτικών του δεξιοτήτων μπορεί να επηρεάσει το βαθμό στον οποίο μπορούν να προκύψουν παρόμοια συμπεράσματα για τις δεξιότητές του σχετικά με κάποιες διαστάσεις κάποιων παραγόντων (π.χ., τη διάσταση της συχνότητας του προσανατολισμού). Για τον προσδιορισμό του βαθμού στον οποίο κάθε παράγοντας του επιπέδου της τάξης σχετίζεται με την πρόοδο των μαθητών της δευτεροβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης στα Μαθηματικά, έγινε χρήση των πολυεπίπεδων μοντέλων (multilevel modelling techniques). Το μηδενικό μοντέλο των πολυεπίπεδων αναλύσεων κατέδειξε ότι το επίπεδο του εκπαιδευτικού μπορεί να ερμηνεύσει μεγαλύτερο ποσοστό διασποράς στα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα από αυτό που μπορεί να ερμηνεύσει το επίπεδο της τάξης. Ακόμη, τα αποτελέσματα των αναλύσεων αυτών υποστηρίζουν τη γενικευμένη (generic) φύση των παραγόντων του επιπέδου της τάξης του δυναμικού μοντέλου, καθώς κατέδειξαν ότι οι παράγοντες αυτοί σχετίζονται και με την προαγωγή των μαθησιακών αποτελεσμάτων των μαθητών της δευτεροβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης πέραν των μαθητών της πρωτοβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης. Τέλος, διαφάνηκε καμπυλόγραμμη σχέση μεταξύ ορισμένων διαστάσεων ορισμένων παραγόντων με τα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα (π.χ., τη διάσταση της εστίασης των τεχνικών ερωτήσεων). Στο τελευταίο μέρος της παρούσας εργασίας, γίνεται αναφορά στη συνεισφορά των αποτελεσμάτων της έρευνας στη θεωρία και στην πράξη, ειδικά στην αξιολόγηση των εκπαιδευτικών και στην επαγγελματική τους ανάπτυξη. Επιπλέον, παρουσιάζονται εισηγήσεις για περαιτέρω έρευνα. Most countries around the world use measures of quality of teaching, such as classroom observation, as an essential aspect of their teacher evaluation systems. The focus on teaching for evaluating teachers is justified by the findings of effectiveness studies which reveal that what teachers actually do in the classroom is the most important factor at classroom level associated with student outcomes. Over the last decades several theoretical frameworks have been developed to study and analyse teaching and several studies have been carried out to investigate issues related to the validity and reliability of data on quality of teaching. However, what is not yet clear is whether measuring teaching skills depends on the classroom context, and more specifically if teachers exhibit the same generic teaching skills when they teach in different classrooms. In this context, this study investigates whether we can generate similar scores about secondary school teachers’ generic teaching skills through observing them teaching mathematics in different classrooms of the same age group of students, and through asking students from different classrooms to evaluate the classroom behaviour of their teacher. Concerning its theoretical framework, the study made use of the dynamic model of educational effectiveness, which refers to eight generic classroom-level factors that describe teachers’ instructional role. Given that previous studies testing the validity of this model were conducted in primary and pre-primary schools, the current study also aims to identify the effect of each classroom-level factor of the dynamic model and its dimensions on achievement gains in mathematics of secondary students. In addition, by collecting data from more than one classroom of the same teachers, this study aims to distinguish between the classroom and teacher effect and investigate which level can explain more variance in student outcomes. A stage sampling procedure was used. Specifically, 12 lower secondary schools were initially selected. Then, all teachers of the school sample who taught mathematics in at least two classrooms of students of the same grade (i.e., grade 7 and/or grade 8) were chosen. About 915 students of the class sample (n=57) and 26 teachers participated in this study. Student achievement in mathematics was measured at the beginning and at the end of the school year 2014-2015 by using external forms of assessment. The written tests were developed and validated in a pilot study conducted in the previous year (2013-2014). Teacher behaviour in the classroom was measured by classroom observations using low and high-inference observation instruments and through a student questionnaire. A generalisability study was conducted in order to examine the consistency of teacher behaviour across different classrooms. The results of these analyses revealed that secondary school teachers behave consistently in different classrooms for most classroom-level factors of the dynamic model irrespective of the instrument used to evaluate them. However, the generalisability study showed that the teacher scores regarding the majority of the dimensions of orientation and dealing with misbehaviour are not generalisable at the teacher level but are generalisable at the classroom level. In addition, it was found that the type of instrument used to measure teaching skills can contribute to whether similar judgements will be produced when the same teacher is evaluated across different classrooms, for some dimensions of some factors (e.g., the frequency dimension of orientation). Multilevel modelling techniques were also used to identify the extent to which each classroom-level factor is associated with achievement gains in mathematics of secondary school students. The empty model of the multilevel analyses revealed that the teacher level explains more variance in student outcomes than the classroom level. Moreover, the results of these analyses revealed that the classroom-level factors of the dynamic model are relevant for promoting secondary school students learning outcomes too, providing support to the generic nature of these factors in different phases of schooling. Curvilinear relations between some dimensions of some factors (e.g., the focus dimension of questioning techniques) and student achievement were also identified. Implications of the findings for theory and practice, especially for teacher evaluation and professional development, are drawn and suggestions for further research are provided.

Η έρευνα γύρω από τα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα, ξεκινά με την παραδοχή ότι η μάθηση συμβαίνει με συστηματικό τρόπο στο σχολείο λόγω της συμπεριφοράς του εκπαιδευτικού στην τάξη. Επιπρόσθετα, η μάθηση επηρεάζεται και από το οικογενειακό του περιβάλλον. Έτσι, η παρούσα διαχρονική έρευνα μελετά συστηματικά την επίδραση της αποτελεσματικότητας του εκπαιδευτικού και του περιβάλλοντος μάθησης που προσφέρει η οικογένεια στα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα. Σύμφωνα με τη βιβλιογραφία, οι δύο παράγοντες επηρεάζουν περισσότερο τα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα από άλλους παράγοντες. Οι περισσότεροι ερευνητές που μελέτησαν την επίδραση του εκπαιδευτικού και της οικογένειας, επικεντρώθηκαν είτε στην επίδραση των παραγόντων αποτελεσματικότητας του εκπαιδευτικού, είτε στην επίδραση του περιβάλλοντος μάθησης που προσφέρει η οικογένεια. Όπως για παράδειγμα το Δυναμικό Μοντέλο Εκπαιδευτικής Αποτελεσματικότητας (ΔΜΕΑ) το οποίο αναφέρεται σε παράγοντες διδασκαλίας οι οποίοι θεωρούνται ότι μπορούν να συνεισφέρουν στην προαγωγή τόσο των γνωστικών όσο και των μεταγνωστικών μαθησιακών αποτελεσμάτων. Εντούτοις, οι έρευνες αυτές μελέτησαν μόνο τη βραχυπρόθεσμη επίδραση είτε των παραγόντων αποτελεσματικότητας του εκπαιδευτικού, είτε του περιβάλλοντος μάθησης που προσφέρει η οικογένεια. Στο πλαίσιο αυτό, ο σκοπός της παρούσας διαχρονικής έρευνας, είναι η διερεύνηση της βραχυπρόθεσμης και μακροπρόθεσμης επίδρασης τόσο των παραγόντων αποτελεσματικότητας του εκπαιδευτικού, όσο και του περιβάλλοντος μάθησης που προσφέρει η οικογένεια, στα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα στα μαθηματικά. Έτσι, τη σχολική χρονιά 2013-2014 επιλέγηκαν τυχαία 54 δημόσια σχολεία πρωτοβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης στην Κύπρο (από την περιοχή της Λευκωσίας), εκ των οποίων τα 48 δέχτηκαν να συμμετέχουν στην παρούσα έρευνα. Κατά τη διάρκεια διεξαγωγής της έρευνας, αφαιρέθηκε ένα σχολείο από το δείγμα, καθώς παρατηρήθηκε μεγάλη μείωση στον αριθμό των μαθητών από την Α’ στη Β΄ τάξη. Από τα 47 σχολεία επιλέγηκαν όλα τα τμήματα Α’ τάξης και όλοι οι μαθητές των τμημάτων. Το 85% των γονιών έδωσαν την έγκρισή τους για συμμετοχή των παιδιών τους στην έρευνα, με τελικό δείγμα 1444 μαθητές. Η παρούσα διαχρονική έρευνα διήρκησε τρία χρόνια, κατά τη διάρκεια των οποίων παρακολουθήθηκε και αξιολογήθηκε στα μαθηματικά, η ίδια ομάδα μαθητών από την Α’ τάξη του δημοτικού, όταν τα παιδιά ήταν 6 χρονών (σχολική χρονιά 2013-2014), μέχρι και την Γ’ τάξη του δημοτικού σχολείου, όταν τα παιδιά ήταν 8 χρονών (σχολική χρονιά 2015-2016). Έτσι θα μπορούσε να διερευνηθεί η βραχυπρόθεσμη επίδραση των παραγόντων αποτελεσματικότητας του εκπαιδευτικού και του περιβάλλοντος μάθησης που προσφέρει η οικογένεια, εντός τριών σχολικών χρόνων και να ελεγχθεί κατά πόσο υπήρχε σταθερότητα στα αποτελέσματα. Επίσης, θα μπορούσε να διερευνηθεί η μακροπρόθεσμη επίδραση των παραγόντων αποτελεσματικότητας του εκπαιδευτικού και του περιβάλλοντος μάθησης που προσφέρει η οικογένεια σε δύο διαφορετικές φάσεις: στο τέλος της Β’ και στο τέλος της Γ’ τάξης. Κατά τη διάρκεια αυτών των τριών χρόνων εξεταζόταν το περιβάλλον μάθησης που προσφέρει η οικογένεια, οι παράγοντες αποτελεσματικότητας του εκπαιδευτικού και τα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα. Συνολικά, έγιναν έξι μετρήσεις των μαθησιακών αποτελεσμάτων κατά τη διάρκεια των τριών χρόνων συλλογής δεδομένων. Επίσης, κάθε σχολική χρονικά γινόταν μέτρηση των παραγόντων αποτελεσματικότητας των εκπαιδευτικών του δείγματος, με παρακολουθήσεις της διδασκαλίας τους από τέσσερεις ανεξάρτητους παρατηρητές με βάση τους παράγοντες αποτελεσματικότητας του ΔΜΕΑ. Για κάθε εκπαιδευτικό, γινόταν παρακολούθηση της διδασκαλίας του, τρεις φορές εντός της σχολικής χρονιάς, ταυτόχρονα από δύο παρατηρητές. Το περιβάλλον μάθησης που προσφέρει η οικογένεια, αρχικά, μετρήθηκε στην αρχή της Α’ τάξης χορηγώντας ερωτηματολόγιο στους γονείς του δείγματος. Λόγω της δυναμικής μεταβολής του με το χρόνο, χορηγήθηκε και δεύτερο ερωτηματολόγιο στο τέλος της Γ’ τάξης. Τέλος, για τη διερεύνηση της βραχυπρόθεσμης και μακροπρόθεσμης επίδρασης του περιβάλλοντος μάθησης που προσφέρει η οικογένεια και των παραγόντων της αποτελεσματικότητας του εκπαιδευτικού στα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα, διενεργήθηκαν πολυεπίπεδες στατιστικές αναλύσεις. Μετρώντας τη βραχυπρόθεσμη επίδραση του περιβάλλοντος μάθησης που προσφέρει η οικογένεια (όπως μετρήθηκε στην Α’ τάξη), φάνηκε ότι μόνο δύο παράγοντες (εκπαιδευτικά υλικά που υπάρχουν στο σπίτι και οι κατ’ οίκον δραστηριότητες εμπλουτισμού μάθησης) σχετίζονται με τα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα στα μαθηματικά στο τέλος της Α’ τάξης. Ωστόσο, μόνο ο παράγοντας των εκπαιδευτικών υλικών που υπάρχουν στο σπίτι είχε άμεση επίδραση στα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα στο τέλος της Β’ και Γ’ τάξης. Ακολούθως, μετρώντας τη βραχυπρόθεσμη επίδραση του περιβάλλοντος μάθησης που προσφέρει η οικογένεια όπως μετρήθηκε στο τέλος της Γ’ τάξης, φάνηκε ότι μόνο δύο παράγοντες (η διάρκεια φοίτησης στο νηπιαγωγείο και οι προσδοκίες των γονέων) σχετίζονται με τα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα στα μαθηματικά στο τέλος της Γ’ τάξης. Ελέγχοντας τη βραχυπρόθεσμη επίδραση του εκπαιδευτικού μέσα από τρεις διαφορετικές αναλύσεις, φάνηκε ότι οι μεταβλητές που μετρούν τους παράγοντες του εκπαιδευτικού έχουν σημαντική επίδραση στα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα. Μακροπρόθεσμα, φάνηκε ότι η επίδραση σχεδόν όλων των παραγόντων του εκπαιδευτικού έχουν στατιστικά σημαντική επίδραση στα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα. Τέλος, όσον αφορά στην επίδραση των χαρακτηριστικών του μαθητή και του περιβάλλοντος μάθησης που προσφέρει η οικογένεια μακροπρόθεσμα, φάνηκε ότι το ΚΟΕ και τα εκπαιδευτικά υλικά που υπάρχουν στο σπίτι έχουν συνεχώς στατιστικά σημαντική επίδραση. Καμιά άλλη πτυχή του περιβάλλοντος μάθησης που προσφέρει η οικογένεια δε φάνηκε να έχει επίδραση στα μαθηματικά μακροπρόθεσμα. Συμπερασματικά, αυτό που φάνηκε να επηρεάζει τα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα στα μαθηματικά μέσα από το περιβάλλον μάθησης που προσφέρει η οικογένεια, είναι οι ευκαιρίες μάθησης που δίνει η οικογένεια στον μαθητή. Αυτές οι ευκαιρίες μάθησης που φάνηκε να επηρεάζουν θετικά τα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα, είναι σχετικές και αντίστοιχες με το αναλυτικό πρόγραμμα που διδάσκονται οι μαθητές στην προδημοτική και στη δημοτική εκπαίδευση στην Κύπρο. Επιπρόσθετα, προκύπτει ότι οι αποτελεσματικοί εκπαιδευτικοί μπορεί να είναι σε θέση να αντισταθμίσουν εν μέρει το ανεπαρκές περιβάλλον μάθησης που προσφέρει η οικογένεια, καθώς η επίδραση της διδασκαλίας τους είναι μακροχρόνια, σε αντίθεση με πολλές πτυχές του περιβάλλοντος μάθησης που προσφέρει η οικογένεια. Φάνηκε ότι η μακροπρόθεσμη επίδραση των εκπαιδευτικών είναι μεγαλύτερη από τη βραχυπρόθεσμη, κάτι που δείχνει ότι οι παράγοντες που σχετίζονται με την ποιότητα της διδασκαλίας συνεχίζουν να επηρεάζουν μακροπρόθεσμα τα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα. Άρα, ο εκπαιδευτικός επηρεάζει την πρόοδο των μαθητών και έτσι ως ερευνητές μπορούμε να μελετούμε την μακροχρόνια αποτελεσματικότητα ενός εκπαιδευτικού. Φάνηκε ακόμη, ότι σχεδόν όλοι οι παράγοντες αποτελεσματικότητας του εκπαιδευτικού έχουν στατιστικά σημαντική επίδραση στα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα, ανεξάρτητα από τη χρονική περίοδο που εξετάστηκαν. Έτσι, προκύπτει η σημαντικότητα να λαμβάνονται υπόψη ταυτόχρονα και οι οκτώ παράγοντες του εκπαιδευτικού σε περίπτωση μέτρησης της αποτελεσματικότητάς του. Research on learning outcomes, begins with the assumption that learning occurs systematically at school because of teacher behaviour in the classroom. Furthermore, learning is affected by the home learning environment. To this end, this longitudinal study investigates the effect of teacher effectiveness and home learning environment on student achievement gains. According to the literature, these two factors affect significantly the student outcomes. Most of the researchers who investigated the effect of teacher or family, investigated either the effect of the teacher effectiveness, or the effect of home learning environment. For example, the Dynamic Model of Educational Effectiveness refers to teaching factors that can promote cognitive and metacognitive skills. But, these studies investigated only the short term effect of teaching factors, or the short term effect of home learning environment on student outcomes. In this context, this longitudinal study investigates the short and long term effect of teacher effectiveness and home learning environment on student mathematics outcomes. In particular, at the beginning of school year 2013-2014, 54 primary schools in Cyprus (Nicosia) were randomly chosen and 48 of them agreed to participate in this study. During the study, one school removed from the sample, as there was a large decrease in the number of students moving from grade 1 to grade 2. The 85% of the parents, agreed for the participation of their child in the research. Evidently, the sample was 1444 students. The data collection of this study, lasted three years, and during this period the same group of students was investigated from grade 1 (school year 2013-2014) to grade 3 (school year 2015-2016). Consequently, the short term effect of teacher effectiveness and home learning environment could be investigated during three school years and examine whether the results are stable. Furthermore, the long term effect of teacher effectiveness and home learning environment could also be investigated in two phases: at the end of grade 2 and at the end of grade 3. During these three school years the home learning environment, teacher effectiveness and student outcomes were measured. During the three years of data collection, the student outcomes were measured at six different phases. Also each year, teacher effectiveness was measured by four external observers, who measured teacher effectiveness based on the dynamic model. Home learning environment was measured at the beginning of year 1 using a questionnaire completed by the parents. Because of its dynamic change over time, a second questionnaire was also given to the parents, at the end of year 3. Finally, in order to investigate the short and long term effect of teacher effectiveness and home learning environment on student outcomes, multilevel analysis were conducted. Measuring the short term effect of home learning environment (as measured at the beginning of year 1), it was found that only two factors (home learning materials and home learning activities) were correlated with student outcomes at the end of year 1. However, only one factor had direct effect on student outcomes at the end of year 2 and year 3. Furthermore, measuring the short term effect of home learning environment as measured at the end of year 3, it was found that only two factors (years of attendance pre-school and expectations of parents) were correlated with student outcomes at the end of year 3. Searching for the short term effect of teacher effectiveness in three different analysis, it was found that the variables measuring teacher factors has statistically significant effect on student outcomes. With regards to the long term effect, it was found that the effect of almost all teacher factors on student outcomes was statistically significant. Finally, concerning the long term effect of student characteristics and home learning environment, it was found that the socio-economic status of family and home learning materials had statistically significant effect. No other factor of home learning environment was found to have long term effect on student outcomes. In conclusion, what seems to affect student outcomes through the home learning environment the most, is the learning opportunities offered by the family to the student. These learning opportunities that seemed to affect positively the learning outcomes, are correlated and relevant to the curriculum used in Cyprus in pre-primary and primary school. Furthermore, we can say that effective teachers may can compensate the poor home learning environment as the effect of their teaching is longitudinal, in contrast to many factors of home learning environment. It was found that long term effect of teachers is bigger than the short term, showing that the factors correlated to the quality of teaching continue to affect longitudinally the student outcomes. Therefore, the teacher can affect the progress of students and as a consequence, researchers can investigate the long term effect of teacher effectiveness. It was also found, that almost all teacher factors had statistically significant effect on student outcomes despite the time period that were measured. Thus, it is important to take into account the same time period for all the factors that determine teacher effectiveness in order to measure teacher effectiveness.

Λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τα ευρήματα ερευνών στην Κύπρο αλλά και στο διεθνή χώρο, σκοπός της παρούσας έρευνας ήταν η εξέταση της σχέσης της μετασχηματιστικής ηγεσίας στην πρωτοβάθμια εκπαίδευση της Κύπρου με την εμπιστοσύνη των εκπαιδευτικών απέναντι στον ηγέτη τους, τα κίνητρα μάθησης των εκπαιδευτικών, την αφοσίωση των εκπαιδευτικών προς την εργασία τους, καθώς και την επαγγελματική τους ικανοποίηση. Έγινε συνδυασμός ποσοτικής και ποιοτικής μεθοδολογίας, για να δοθεί η δυνατότητα εμβάθυνσης στο θέμα και απάντησης των βασικών ερευνητικών ερωτημάτων. Στο ποσοτικό μέρος της έρευνας έλαβαν μέρος 302 εκπαιδευτικοί από 24 δημοτικά σχολεία της Κύπρου. Σε σχέση με το ποιοτικό μέρος συμμετείχαν 32 εκπαιδευτικοί από 8 σχολεία. Ειδικότερα, χρησιμοποιήθηκαν ερωτηματολόγια για να εξεταστούν και να εντοπιστούν οι σχέσεις μεταξύ των μεταβλητών, καθώς και οι διευθυντές που λειτουργούν μετασχηματιστικά και μη μετασχηματιστικά. Ακολούθως διεξήχθηκαν ημιδομημένες συνεντεύξεις σε τέσσερα σχολεία με μετασχηματιστικό και σε άλλα τέσσερα με μη μετασχηματιστικό ηγέτη. Διαπιστώθηκε ότι η μετασχηματιστική ηγεσία επιδρά στην εμπιστοσύνη των εκπαιδευτικών στον ηγέτη σε μεγαλύτερο βαθμό σε σχέση με τις υπόλοιπες μεταβλητές της έρευνας. Στα πλαίσια των συνεντεύξεων εντοπίστηκε ότι η μετασχηματιστική ηγεσία επιδρά στην εμπιστοσύνη, στην επαγγελματική ικανοποίηση, στην αφοσίωση και στα κίνητρα μάθησης των εκπαιδευτικών. Κάτι τέτοιο συμφωνεί και με ευρήματα άλλων ερευνών που παρουσιάστηκαν στην βιβλιογραφική ανασκόπηση. Ωστόσο με βάση τα αποτελέσματα της παρούσας έρευνας αλλά και με τη βιβλιογραφία δεν αρκεί η μετασχηματιστική ηγεσία από μόνη της. Χρειάζεται να συνδυαστεί με άλλα στυλ ηγεσίας ώστε να διασφαλιστεί η αποτελεσματικότητα και η ικανοποίηση των εκπαιδευτικών από την εργασία τους. Τα αποτελέσματα της παρούσας έρευνας είναι σημαντικά σε σχέση με την επιμόρφωση και κατάρτιση των μελλοντικών αλλά και των εν υπηρεσία διευθυντών Πρωτοβάθμιας Εκπαίδευσης της Κύπρου. In the last few years, transformational leadership constitutes a subject that occupies the research in various sectors including education. International research found that transformational leadership has an effect in the perceptions and the behavior of teachers. Also, it is connected with the teachers’ commitment to their job, their job satisfaction and their motivation to learn. In education it was found to affect the perceptions of teachers for the conditions in their schools, their commitment towards change and learning in the organization. Taking into account the results of local and international research, the aim of the present study was the examination of the relationship of transformational leadership with teachers’ job satisfaction, their motivation to learn, their trust to their school leadership and teachers’ commitment to their job in primary education of Cyprus. The research used a combination of quantitative and qualitative methodology. Thus, the sample in the quantitative part consisted of 302 teachers from 24 primary education schools in Cyprus, in order to answer the research questions. In the qualitative part the sample included 32 teachers from eight primary education schools. A questionnaire was used to collect the quantitative data, whereas the qualitative data were collected through semi structured interviews. Specifically, interviews were conducted in for schools with transformational leadership and in four schools with no transformational leadership. It was found that transformational leadership affects the trust of teachers to their leader in greater degree than the other variables of the research. Also, through the interviews it was found that transformational leadership affects the teachers’ commitment to their job, their job satisfaction and their motivation to learn. However, transformational leadership is not the unique variable that effects the above variables. Teachers in schools with no transformational leader stated that they were satisfied, committed and motivated to learn. This suggests that transformational leadership may have an effect to all these variables but there is a need to be combined to other leadership styles in order to ensure the improvement and change in schools. This finding confirms previous studies supporting the need of combining transformational leadership with other leadership styles such as instructional leadership. The results of the present study are important for the training of future school managers in the area of primary education of Cyprus. Finally, the present study gives some suggestions for further research in the sector of educational administration.

The employability of university graduates constitutes a major policy concern in both developed and developing nations. In this context, the present study uses self-reported data to compare the earnings and employment expectations of university students, and the realised earnings and employment paths of recent graduates. The sample consisted of 476 individuals (243 students and 233 graduates of the University of Cyprus). The analysis points to both differences and similarities in the effect of different variables on (a) the probability of employment for graduates and the probability of expected employment for students, and (b) the conditional salary of graduates and the conditional expected salary of students. The completion of postgraduate studies, the area of family residence and the department of study are the key factors affecting the graduates' employment probability, while the students' probability of expected employment is determined differently, namely by characteristics such as secondary education performance and studies in the business administration department. Gender and family income are among the main determinants of both the graduates' actual earnings and the students' expected earnings, with women earning or expecting to earn less than men, and graduates/students with higher family incomes earning or anticipating to earn more than their lower income counterparts. One of the key findings of Educational Effectiveness Research (EER) is the importance of the classroom level as a predictor of pupil outcomes. Research from developed countries has therefore centered on the classroom, and classroom processes as an important determinant of students' learning outcomes. Unfortunately, little of this strand of research has been conducted in sub-Saharan African countries, particularly in Ghana. This study is the first of its kind in Ghana, if not the entire sub-Saharan African region. The conceptual framework of the dynamic model of educational effectiveness was used in studying the impact of teaching factors on student learning gains in mathematics. The aim was to determine the degree to which teaching processes identified as effective in developed countries are equally effective in developing countries. The dynamic model refers to factors operating at four levels: student, teacher, school, and educational system. At the classroom level, the model refers to eight factors relating to teacher behavior in the classroom: orientation, structuring, questioning, teaching-modeling, application, management of time, classroom learning environment, and assessment. The model assumes that each of the factors can be defined and measured using five dimensions: frequency, focus, stage, quality, and differentiation. Seven longitudinal studies in Europe provided empirical support to the validity of this measurement framework and also revealed that teacher and school factors are associated with student learning outcomes. However, none of these studies has been conducted in developing countries where class sizes can be large. In this context, the study sought to determine whether the teacher factors of the dynamic model can be observed in primary classrooms in Ghana, and/or whether they are associated with student achievement. A multi-stage sampling procedure was used to generate data. Specifically, a representative sample of 73 primary schools in Ghana was selected and all grade six classes/teachers (N=99) and students (N=4386) participated in the study. Written tests in mathematics were administered to all the students both at the beginning and end of the school year 2013–2014. Data on student background factors (i.e., SES, home learning environment) was also collected. One high-inference and one low-inference observation instruments, and a student questionnaire were used in collecting data on quality of teaching. Confirmatory factor analyses provided support to the construct validity of each instrument. The questionnaire and the high-inference instrument produced valid data about each factor whereas the low-inference instrument generated data about each dimension and factor. Multilevel analyses were conducted investigating the extent to which teacher scores generated by each instrument were associated with student achievement. Data from the questionnaire could not identify any effect of teacher factors. However, data about each teacher factor from the instruments were found to be associated with student achievement. Moreover, data from the low-inference instrument revealed the importance of using different dimensions to measure each teacher factor. The instrument enabled the determination that the teachers emphasized more on the quantitative aspect of teaching which is basic to instruction. This revealed the importance of providing the teachers with training on the qualitative characteristics of teaching. The importance of using multiple instruments for measuring quality teaching was also revealed. With only the student questionnaire, wrongful conclusions would have been drawn about the effects of the teacher factors. Based on the impact of the factors on achievement, it can be claimed the factors are probably more important in the developing school context. All teacher factors and their dimensions were found to have much bigger effect sizes on student achievement (i.e., above 0.30) than the effect sizes reported by studies conducted in developed countries (i.e., smaller than 0.20). The importance of using observation instruments to measure the impact of teaching on student achievement in developing countries, especially African countries is also discussed. Policy on teacher professional development in Ghana, and implications for theory and research on educational effectiveness are finally drawn.

Συγκεκριμένα, η μελέτη αυτή στοχεύει στο να εξετάσει κατά πόσον η μεταγνώση μεταβάλλεται, ποια είναι η σχέση μεταξύ γνώσης και μεταγνώσης, αν ο εκπαιδευτικός μπορεί να επηρεάσει τη μεταγνώση και - αν ναι - ποιοι παράγοντες διδασκαλίας που προέρχονται από τις δύο διδακτικές προσεγγίσεις έχουν επίδραση στα μεταγνωστικά επιτεύγματα. Με τη διαδικασία της κατά στάδιο δειγματοληψίας επιλέγηκαν τυχαία 9 σχολεία δημοτικής εκπαίδευσης της Κύπρου. Στην έρευνα συμμετείχαν όλοι οι μαθητές (n=504) που φοιτούσαν στα 33 τμήματα Δ΄ και Ε΄ τάξης των σχολείων αυτών. Στους μαθητές χορηγήθηκαν δοκίμια Μαθηματικών καθώς και το μεταγνωστικό δοκίμιο «Metacognitive Skills and Knowledge Assessment» στην αρχή και στο τέλος της σχολικής χρονιάς 2013-2014. Επιπλέον, όλοι οι μαθητές συμπλήρωσαν ένα ερωτηματολόγιο που μετρούσε τη συμπεριφορά του εκπαιδευτικού στην τάξη. Για τη διερεύνηση των επιδράσεων των παραγόντων αποτελεσματικής διδασκαλίας στα γνωστικά και μεταγνωστικά επιτεύγματα διενεργήθηκε πολυεπίπεδη ανάλυση μοντέλων δομικών εξισώσεων. Τα αποτελέσματα αποκάλυψαν την ύπαρξη μιας αμφίδρομης σχέσης ανάμεσα στη γνώση και τη μεταγνώση. Σχεδόν όλοι οι παράγοντες διδασκαλίας του Δυναμικού Μοντέλου φάνηκε να έχουν επίδραση στα γνωστικά επιτεύγματα, αλλά μόνο τέσσερις εξ αυτών φάνηκε να έχουν επίδραση στα μεταγνωστικά επιτεύγματα. Συγκεκριμένα, παράγοντες που συνδέονται με την εποικοδομιστική προσέγγιση στη διδασκαλία είχαν σημαντική συμβολή στην ανάπτυξη των μεταγνωστικών επιτευγμάτων. Επιπλέον, δύο παράγοντες του Δυναμικού Μοντέλου που συνάδουν με την άμεση και ενεργό προσέγγιση στη διδασκαλία βρέθηκαν επίσης να επηρεάζουν την ανάπτυξη των μεταγνωστικών επιτευγμάτων. Με βάση τα αποτελέσματα, συζητείται η συνεισφορά της έρευνας στη θεωρία και την πρακτική. Several effectiveness studies conducted in different countries over the past three decades have consistently shown that classroom level is more important than the school level in terms of explaining the variance in student achievement. It has also been demonstrated that a large proportion of the classroom level variance can be attributed to teachers’ behavior in the classroom. As a consequence, classroom practice has become firmly integrated into theoretical and empirical models of educational effectiveness research which attempt to explain why these teaching factors are important for learning outcomes. An important constraint is the fact that the most effectiveness studies are exclusively focused on language or mathematics rather than on the whole school curriculum aims (cognitive, metacognitive and affective). In particular, while metacognition has generated a lot of interest and research in education, the educational effectiveness paradigm has not yet permeated into this field. Recent model (the dynamic model of educational effectiveness) refers to teaching factors which are assumed to promote both cognitive and metacognitive achievement. However, there are few studies that show whether teachers differ with respect to the degree to which they foster students’ metacognitive achievements, and which factors at the teacher level are responsible for any differences. In this context, the effectiveness study reported here aimed to identify the extent to which teacher factors of the dynamic model have an impact on the development of students’ cognitive and metacognitive achievement. Some of these factors are associated with direct and active teaching approach, whereas others are in line with the constructivist approach to teaching. Specifically, this study aimed to examine whether metacognition is changed, which is the relationship between cognition and metacognition, if teacher can affect metacognition and - if so - which teaching factors derived from the two different teaching approaches have an impact on student metacognitive achievement. A stage sampling procedure was used and 9 primary schools in Cyprus were randomly selected. All grade-4 and grade-5 students (n=504) of the 33 classes of the school sample participated in the main study. Written tests in Mathematics and the “Metacognitive Skills and Knowledge Assessment” tool were administered to students at the beginning and at the end of school year 2013-2014. Moreover, all students completed a questionnaire measuring teacher behavior in classroom. Multilevel SEM analysis was conducted to search for the effect of teacher factors on student cognitive and metacognitive achievement. The results revealed a reciprocal relationship between students’ cognitive and metacognitive achievement. Almost all teacher factors of the dynamic model were associated with cognitive achievement but only four were associated with metacognitive achievement. In particular, factors associated with the constructivist approach to teaching had a significant contribution to the development of student metacognitive achievement. Moreover, two factors of the dynamic model that are in line with the direct and active approach to teaching were also found to be associated with the development of student metacognitive achievement. Implications of findings for theory and practice are drawn.

Οι έρευνες που πραγματοποιήθηκαν τα τελευταία χρόνια στο χώρο της εκπαιδευτικής αποτελεσματικότητας ήταν σε θέση να προσφέρουν σημαντικές πληροφορίες ως προς τον τρόπο λειτουργίας της εκπαίδευσης και οδήγησαν στον εντοπισμό διάφορων παραγόντων που μπορούν να εξηγήσουν τις διαφορές που παρατηρούνται στα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα. Οι έρευνες αυτές οδήγησαν επίσης στην ανάπτυξη του θεωρητικού πλαισίου της έρευνας για την εκπαιδευτική αποτελεσματικότητα και στη δημιουργία μια κοινής βάσης για συζήτηση μεταξύ των ερευνητών. Ωστόσο, η ανάγκη για διαχύση των αποτελεσμάτων των εθνικών ερευνών και η επιδίωξη για ανταλλαγή γνώσεων μεταξύ ερευνητών που προέρχονται από διαφορετικές χώρες, έχει οδηγήσει τους ερευνητές σε μια προσπάθεια όχι μόνο διεξαγωγής διεθνών συνεδρίων, όπου η γνώση μπορεί να διαδοθεί ευρύτερα, αλλά και στην αναγνώριση της συμβολής των διεθνών ερευνών. Διεθνείς διαχρονικές έρευνες (longitudinal) μπορούν να συμβάλουν στον τομέα της εκπαιδευτικής αποτελεσματικότητας παρέχοντας εμπειρική υποστήριξη σε υπάρχουσες θεωρίες και βοηθώντας έτσι τη δημιουργία ενός στέρεου θεωρητικού πλαισίου, εντοπίζοντας παράγοντες που σχετίζονται με την πρόοδο των μαθητών, ανεξάρτητα από το συγκείμενο της κάθε χώρας. Λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τη συμβολή των διεθνών διαχρονικών ερευνών, η έρευνα αυτή συνέλεξε δεδομένα από έξι ευρωπαϊκές χώρες (Βέλγιο, Κύπρο, Γερμανία, Ελλάδα, Ιρλανδία και Σλοβενία) με στόχο την παροχή υποστήριξης στις βασικές υποθέσεις του δυναμικού μοντέλου εκπαιδευτικής αποτελεσματικότητας σε σχέση με τους παράγοντες που λειτουργούν σε δύο διαφορετικά επίπεδα: το επίπεδο της τάξης και του σχολείου. Συγκεκριμένα, στόχος της παρούσας έρευνας ήταν η εξέταση της επίδρασης των παραγόντων που περιλαμβάνονται στο επίπεδο της τάξης και του σχολείου στο δυναμικό μοντέλο, στην πρόοδο των μαθητών σε έξι διαφορετικές χώρες και δύο διαφορετικά γνωστικά αντικείμενα (μαθηματικά και επιστήμη). Στόχος επίσης της παρούσας έρευνας ήταν να εξετάσει κατά πόσο η σχέση κάποιων παραγόντων με τα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα δεν είναι γραμμική αλλά καμπυλόγραμμη. Συνεπώς, σε κάθε συμμετέχουσα χώρα επιλέγηκε δείγμα τουλάχιστον 50 σχολείων πρωτοβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης και σε όλους τους μαθητές Δ’ τάξης χορηγήθηκε δοκίμιο για τη μέτρηση της επίδοσής τους στα μαθηματικά και την επιστήμη (n = 10742), στην αρχή και στο τέλος του σχολικού έτους 2010-2011. Για την κατασκευή των δοκιμίων, λήφθηκε άδεια από το διεθνή οργανισμό IEA για να χρησιμοποιηθούν θέματα από τη διεθνή έρευνα TIMSS 2007. Οι μαθητές κλήθηκαν επίσης να συμπληρώσουν ένα ερωτηματολόγιο για τη μέτρηση της διδακτικής συμπεριφοράς του εκπαιδευτικού τους στην τάξη (δηλαδή, την ποιότητα διδασκαλίας). Παρομοίως, ερωτηματολόγια χορηγήθηκαν και στο δείγμα των εκπαιδευτικών (n = 2923) για τη συλλογή πληροφοριών σχετικά με τις διάφορες πτυχές της πολιτικής του σχολείου, όπως αυτές περιγράφονται στο δυναμικό μοντέλο. Εφόσον τόσο οι μαθητές, όσο και οι εκπαιδευτικοί κλήθηκαν να δηλώσουν τις απόψεις τους σχετικά με παράγοντες που ανήκουν σε υψηλότερο επίπεδο, εφαρμόστηκε ανάλυση διακύμανσης μιας εξαρτημένης μεταβλητής και έδειξε ότι τα δεδομένα που συλλέχθηκαν από τους μαθητές και τους εκπαιδευτικούς μπορούν να γενικευθούν στο επίπεδο της τάξης και του σχολείου, αντίστοιχα. Παράλληλα, η εγκυρότητα των δεδομένων που συλλέχθηκαν από τα ερωτηματολόγια των μαθητών και των εκπαιδευτικών του δείγματος ελέγχθηκε και επιβεβαιώθηκε με τη χρήση των Μοντέλων Δομικών Εξισώσεων (Structural Equation Modeling). Στη συνέχεια, για τη διαπίστωση της επίδρασης των παραγόντων σε επίπεδο τάξης και σχολείου στην επίδοση των μαθητών σε κάθε ένα από τα δύο γνωστικά αντικείμενα που εξετάστηκαν στην παρούσα έρευνα, διεξάχθηκαν ξεχωριστές πολυεπίπεδες αναλύσεις ανά γνωστικό αντικείμενο, αρχικά με τα δεδομένα όλων των χωρών (across-country analysis) και στη συνέχεια με τα δεδομένα της κάθε χώρας ξεχωριστά (within-country analysis). Τα αποτελέσματα των αναλύσεων αυτών κατέδεξαν ότι η πλειονότητα των παραγόντων σε επίπεδο τάξης και σχολείου είναι σε θέση να εξηγήσουν την πρόοδο των μαθητών στα μαθηματικά και στην επιστήμη σε έξι διαφορετικές χώρες. Ταυτόχρονα, πολυμεταβλητή ανάλυση (multivariate analysιs) που εφαρμόστηκε υποστήριξε τη γενική φύση (generic nature) των παραγόντων σε επίπεδο τάξης και σχολείου, ενώ κατέδειξε επίσης ότι οι εκπαιδευτικοί και τα σχολεία που είναι αποτελεσματικά στο ένα γνωστικό αντικείμενο είναι επίσης αποτελεσματικά και στο άλλο. Τέλος, διαφάνηκε καμπυλόγραμμη σχέση μεταξύ ορισμένων παραγόντων του επιπέδου της τάξης και της επίδοσης των μαθητών στα μαθηματικά και την επιστήμη. National studies conducted in the past few decades were able to provide a significant insight as to the functioning of education and led to the identification of several factors explaining variance in student outcomes. These studies have also led to the development of the theoretical base of educational effectiveness research and to the establishment of a mutual basis for discussion among researchers. However, the need of expanding country restricted knowledge and sharing research results has led researchers to an attempt of not only conducting international conferences where knowledge can be more widely spread but also to the recognition of the contribution of international studies. International longitudinal studies may contribute to the field of educational effectiveness by providing empirical support to existing theoretical models, thus assisting the establishment of a solid theoretical framework, demonstrating factors that are associated with student progress irrespective of the context of each country. Taking in mind the contribution of international longitudinal research, this study collected data from six European countries (i.e., Belgium/Flanders, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Ireland, and Slovenia) aiming to provide support to the assumptions of the dynamic model of educational effectiveness in regard to factors operating at two different levels; the classroom and school level. Specifically, this study aimed to examine the generic and differential effects of the classroom and school level factors of the dynamic model in six different countries and two different subjects (i.e., mathematics and science) and also test whether the relationship of some factors with achievement is not linear but curvilinear. Thus, in each participating country a sample of at least 50 primary schools was drawn and tests in mathematics and science were administered to all grade 4 students (n=10742) at the beginning and at the end of school year 2010-2011. For the construction of the tests, permission was obtained from IEA to use the released items of TIMSS 2007. Students were also asked to complete a questionnaire measuring teacher behavior in classroom (i.e., quality of teaching). Similarly, questionnaires were administered to the teacher sample (n=2923) to collect information concerning the different aspects of school policy as they are described in the dynamic model. Since both, students and teachers were asked to report on factors belonging to a higher level, one-way analysis of variance was used and showed that the student and teacher data can be generalized at the classroom and school level, respectively. Structural Equation Modeling also provided support to the validity of student and teacher responses to these questionnaires. Separate multilevel modelling analyses for each subject were conducted both across- and within country, to identify the impact of the teacher and school factors on student achievement. The results of these analyses revealed that most of the teacher and school factors of the dynamic model explain student achievement gains in mathematics and science and provided support to the generic nature of these factors in six different countries and two different outcomes. Multivariate analyses also supported the generic nature of the teacher and school factors in mathematics and science. It was also found that teachers and schools that are effective in one subject are also effective in the other. Curvilinear relations between some classroom level factors and student achievement were also identified. Implications of findings for theory and practice are drawn.

Στα πλαίσια αυτά, διεξήχθη συγχρονική μεικτή έρευνα κατά τη σχολική χρονιά 2013-14, με συνδυασμό ποσοτικής και ποιοτικής μεθοδολογίας. Ο ερευνητικός σχεδιασμός στηρίχθηκε στο μοντέλο των δύο φάσεων. Έτσι, κατά την α΄ φάση της ερευνητικής διαδικασίας έγινε επισκόπηση ανάμεσα στους κύπριους εκπαιδευτικούς μέσης εκπαίδευσης, χρησιμοποιώντας δομημένο ερωτηματολόγιο που κατασκευάστηκε για το σκοπό αυτό. Στη συνέχεια, κατά τη β΄ φάση της έρευνας διερευνήθηκαν σε βάθος τα αποτελέσματα της α΄ φάσης μέσα από προσωπικές συνεντεύξεις με κύπριους Φιλολόγους και μελέτη των εγκυκλίων της σχολικής χρονιάς 2013-14 που σχετίζονταν με θέματα περί αναπηρίας. Το δείγμα της α΄ φάσης αποτέλεσαν 536 εκπαιδευτικοί μέσης εκπαίδευσης, οι οποίοι επιλέχθηκαν με τυχαία στρωματοποιημένη δειγματοληψία. Το δείγμα αυτό φάνηκε να πληροί τις απαραίτητες προϋποθέσεις για να μπορεί να θεωρηθεί αντιπροσωπευτικό. Η ανταποκρισιμότητα ήταν 89%. Στη β΄ φάση των συνεντεύξεων συμμετείχαν 21 Φιλόλογοι, οι οποίοι επιλέχθηκαν με συνδυασμό δειγματοληψίας τυπικών περιπτώσεων και χιονοστιβάδας. Παράλληλα μελετήθηκαν 17 εγκύκλιοι του Υπουργείου Παιδείας και Πολιτισμού (ΥΠΠ). Τα ποσοτικά δεδομένα αναλύθηκαν με το στατιστικό πακέτο SPSS. Για τα ποιοτικά δεδομένα χρησιμοποιήθηκαν οι μέθοδοι της θεματικής και κριτικής ανάλυσης, καθώς και της κριτικής ανάλυσης πολιτικής. Όπως διαφάνηκε από τα αποτελέσματα των αναλύσεων, οι κύπριοι εκπαιδευτικοί μέσης εκπαίδευσης φαίνονται να είναι ιδιαίτερα επηρεασμένοι από το ιατρικό-φιλανθρωπικό μοντέλο, με αποτέλεσμα να έχουν χαμηλές προσδοκίες από τους μαθητές με αναπηρία και να δίνουν έμφαση στην κοινωνικοποίησή τους αντί στην εκπλήρωση μαθησιακών στόχων. Έτσι, αντί να διαφοροποιούν τη διδασκαλία τους ούτως ώστε να μπορούν να ανταποκριθούν στις ανάγκες των παιδιών με αναπηρία και να προάγουν τη μάθηση, ακολουθούν μια τακτική οίκτου και τα βαθμολογούν χαριστικά. Ως αποτέλεσμα ανακυκλώνεται ο φαύλος κύκλος της αποτυχίας και η περιθωριοποίηση των παιδιών με αναπηρία. Κύριοι παράγοντες που ενισχύουν τον αποκλεισμό των παιδιών με αναπηρία φαίνονται να είναι οι ασυνέχειες και οι παραλείψεις όσον αφορά την επίσημη εκπαιδευτική πολιτική του ΥΠΠ, η προχειρότητα με την οποία υλοποιούνται τα προγράμματα ειδικής αγωγής, η εξάρτηση από τους ειδικούς, η έλλειψη επιμόρφωσης, ο συγκεντρωτικός χαρακτήρας του εκπαιδευτικού συστήματος, το μονολιθικό αναλυτικό πρόγραμμα και η αναπηροποιητική ρητορική. Τhe aim of this dissertation was to explore and understand the views, the practice and the role of Cypriot secondary education teachers regarding the education of disabled students, in relation to the special education law and the government policy in Cyprus. The main research questions comprised the views, the actual everyday practice and the assumed role of secondary education teachers regarding disabled students, the factors that influence their views and practice, and their perspectives regarding the future of inclusive education in Cyprus. A cross-sectional, explanatory mixed-method research was conducted, based on Creswell and Plano Clark’s (2007) two-phase research model. During the first phase, a survey was conducted among Cypriot secondary education teachers. The main research tool was a structured questionnaire that was developed for this purpose. During the second phase, the results of the first phase were further explored through semi-structured interviews with Greek Philology teachers. Moreover, the circulars of the school year 2013-14, which referred to disabled students, were identified and studied in depth. The sample of the first phase consisted of 536 Cypriot secondary education teachers and was selected using a random stratified sampling method. The sample was representative and the response rate reached 89%. The sample for the second phase consisted of 21 Greek Philology teachers and was selected based on a combination of typical cases and snowball sampling methods. In addition, 17 circulars published by the Ministry of Education and Culture during the academic year 2013-14 were examined. The quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS. The data from the interviews were analyzed using thematic and critical analysis, whereas the circulars were analyzed based on the critical policy analysis method. Data analysis revealed that the Cypriot secondary education teachers are strongly influenced by the medical-charity model. As a result, they have low expectations from disabled students. Moreover they emphasize the socialization of disabled students, instead of setting learning goals. Consequently, instead of employing differentiated instruction, so as to respond effectively to the disabled students’ needs and to promote learning, secondary education teachers follow a tactic of pity and biased grading. In this framework though, the vicious circle of failure seems to be recycled. Furthermore, the exclusion of disabled children seems to be prompted. Besides the teachers’ attitude and practice, the main factors for exclusion comprise the omissions and shortcomings of the official educational policy, the deficiencies of the special education programs, the dominance of the experts, the lack of in-service training, the centralised character of the education system, the restrictive curriculum and the disabling rhetoric. Despite the gloomy picture, the key factor for the effective implementation of inclusion seems to be the teacher. In fact, teachers have the power to resist the pressures and dismantle the barriers to inclusion, through the teaching practices that they choose to employ within their own classrooms. It is argued then that it is important to enable teachers become agents of change.

Πώς αξιολογείται σήμερα η ΜΤΕΕ της Κύπρου, από τους εμπλεκόμενους όσον αφορά την επαγγελματική αποκατάσταση των αποφοίτων της; Η διατριβή αξιοποιεί πρωτογενή δεδομένα τα οποία εξασφαλίστηκαν από το σύνολο των τελειοφοίτων Μέσης Εκπαίδευσης (ΜΕ) της Κύπρου με τη χρήση ερωτηματολογίου. Με διαφορετικά μοντέλα λογιστικής παλινδρόμησης, μελετά την επίδραση των οικονομικών μεταβλητών (ρυθμός απόδοσης με τη χρήση της εκλεπτυσμένης και της σύντομης μεθόδου) αλλά και άλλων ερμηνευτικών μεταβλητών (ικανότητα, κοινωνικοοικονομικό επίπεδο, φύλο, περιοχή διαμονής και μορφή εκπαίδευσης) στις εκπαιδευτικές προθέσεις του συνόλου των τελειοφοίτων αλλά και των τελειοφοίτων ΜΓΕ και ΜΤΕΕ ξεχωριστά. Σύμφωνα με τα ευρήματα, ο βαθμός επίδρασης των οικονομικών μεταβλητών στην απόφαση για εισαγωγή στην τριτοβάθμια εκπαίδευση είναι σημαντικός, επιβεβαιώνοντας τη ΘΑΚ. Σημαντικός είναι και ο βαθμός επίδρασης των άλλων υπό διερεύνηση ερμηνευτικών μεταβλητών εκτός από την περιοχή διαμονής. Σημαντικές διαφοροποιήσεις εντοπίζονται επίσης στους αναμενόμενους ρυθμούς απόδοσης της τριτοβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης αλλά και στα εισοδήματα ζωής, τόσο μεταξύ τελειοφοίτων με ή χωρίς σπουδές όσο και μεταξύ τελειοφοίτων ΜΓΕ και ΜΤΕΕ. Οι τελειόφοιτοι ΜΕ, που προτίθενται να εισαχθούν στην τριτοβάθμια εκπαίδευση προσδοκούν πολύ υψηλότερο ρυθμό απόδοσης σε σχέση με τους συμμαθητές τους που προτίθενται να ενταχθούν άμεσα στην αγορά εργασίας. Το εύρημα αυτό αποτελεί άλλο ένα παράγοντα ισχυροποίησης της ΘΑΚ στην παρούσα μελέτη. Όσον αφορά τις διαφοροποιήσεις μεταξύ τελειοφοίτων ΜΓΕ και ΜΤΕΕ, τα ευρήματα δείχνουν ότι οι τελειόφοιτοι ΜΤΕΕ, με ή χωρίς σπουδές, προσδοκούν πολύ χαμηλότερο ρυθμό απόδοσης από την τριτοβάθμια εκπαίδευση σε σχέση με τους συμμαθητές τους της ΜΓΕ. Τα αναμενόμενα εισοδήματα του κύκλου ζωής φαίνεται να καταλήγουν σε παρόμοια συμπεράσματα. Οι τελειόφοιτοι ΜΓΕ εκτιμούν το ρόλο της τριτοβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης στην αύξηση των μελλοντικών τους εισοδημάτων περισσότερο από τους τελειόφοιτους ΜΤΕΕ. Η παρούσα εργασία καταπιάνεται επίσης με τις απολαβές των απασχολουμένων στην αγορά εργασίας της Κύπρου αξιοποιώντας την Έρευνα Απολαβών του 2010 της Στατιστικής Υπηρεσίας της Κύπρου. Φαίνεται ότι οι απόφοιτοι ΜΕ ήταν γνώστες των τάσεων που αφορούσαν τις πραγματικές απολαβές των προηγούμενων χρόνων. Τέλος μέσα από ερωτήματα που έχουν τεθεί σε προσωπικές συνεντεύξεις προς εμπλεκόμενους με την επαγγελματική εκπαίδευση και κατάρτιση, αξιολογείται η ΜΤΕΕ της Κύπρου όπου φαίνεται ο σημαντικός και πολύπλευρος ρόλος της, η θετική αντίληψη των συμμετεχόντων για τη σχέση κόστους και οφέλους ΜΤΕΕ και η αυξημένη δυνατότητα εργοδότησης των αποφοίτων της. Παράλληλα εντοπίζεται η ανάγκη για αναβαθμισμένη συνεργασία με τους εργοδότες και περαιτέρω σύνδεση με την αγορά εργασίας. Όσον αφορά τους περιορισμούς της μελέτης και τα θέματα που χρήζουν περαιτέρω διερεύνησης, το πρώτο θέμα αφορά την αδυναμία της έρευνας να διερευνήσει τα πραγματικά εισοδήματα αποφοίτων ΜΓΕ και ΜΤΕΕ που προσφέρονται στην αγορά εργασίας. Ένας άλλος περιορισμός έγκειται στην αδυναμία μέτρησης επιπρόσθετου οφέλους από τη ΜΓΕ και τη ΜΤΕΕ εκτός από τα άμεσα οικονομικά ατομικά οφέλη. Επίσης, η έρευνα καταγράφει τις αντιλήψεις των μαθητών σε συγκεκριμένο χρονικό σημείο. Τα συμπεράσματα που προκύπτουν μέσα από τα ευρήματα της παρούσας μελέτης έχουν αντίκτυπο σε θέματα εκπαιδευτικής επιλογής που αφορούν τη ζήτηση και την προσφορά της τριτοβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης. Οι ατομικοί ρυθμοί απόδοσης προσφέρουν τη δυνατότητα, σε κάποιο βαθμό, πρόβλεψης των πραγματικών αναγκών όσον αφορά το επίπεδο αλλά και τη μορφή εκπαίδευσης (ΜΓΕ ή ΜΤΕΕ) αλλά και τη δυνατότητα παρέμβασης για αυξομείωση της ζήτησης σε συγκεκριμένα εκπαιδευτικά προγράμματα (δευτεροβάθμια και τριτοβάθμιας επαγγελματικής εκπαίδευσης) τα οποία οδηγούν σε τεχνικά και τεχνολογικά επαγγέλματα με αυξημένη προοπτική εργοδότησης και καλύτερα μελλοντικά εισοδήματα. This doctoral thesis attempts to answer the following research questions: 1. Which is the influence of economic factors on the decision of graduating pupils of secondary education to pursue further studies in higher education (is the Human Capital Theory valid)? 2. Does the influence of economic factors differ in the case of graduating pupils of Secondary General Education and graduating pupils of Secondary Technical and Vocational Education? 3. Which other factors influence the decision of graduating pupils of secondary education to pursue higher education? 4. Do the perceived rates of return differ between graduating pupils of Secondary General Education and graduating pupils of Secondary Technical and Vocational Education, with or without higher education? 5. Do the perceived rates of return of graduating pupils of secondary education coincide with the actual rates of return in the labor market? 6. At present, how is the provision of Secondary Technical and Vocational Education in Cyprus evaluated by stakeholders as far as the vocational rehabilitation of its graduates is concerned? The thesis utilizes primary data which were gathered from all graduating pupils of Secondary Education in Cyprus using a questionnaire. Using six different logistic regression models, it measures the effect of economic variables (rate of return using the elaborate and short-cut methods) and other explanatory variables (academic ability, socioeconomic status, gender, place of residence and type of education) on the educational intentions of all graduating pupils, but also of the pupils of Secondary General Education (SGE) and Secondary Technical and Vocational Education (STVE) separately. According to the findings, the degree of influence of economic variables on the decision of pupils to pursue higher education is significant, which provides support for the Theory of the Human Capital. The degree of influence of the other investigated explanatory variables is also significant, with the exception of the place of residence. Significant differences are also identified in the perceived rates of return to higher education and the expected life cycle earnings of graduating pupils with or without higher education, and also between graduating pupils of SGE and STVE. The graduating pupils of Secondary Education intending to follow higher education expect a much higher rate of return, compared to their peers who intend to enter the labor market directly. This finding strengthens the premise of Human Capital Theory that considers educational choices as investment decisions. Regarding the differences between graduating pupils of SGE and STVE, the findings show that STVE graduating pupils, with or without higher education, expect a much lower rate of return from higher education than their peers of SGE. The calculation of expected life cycle income seems to result in similar conclusions. The SGE graduating pupils appreciate the role of higher education in increasing their future income more than STVE graduating pupils. The present study also deals with the analysis of earnings of employees in the labor market in Cyprus. The analysis is based on the highest completed level of education, age and occupational group, utilizing the Structure of Earnings Survey, for the year 2010 (Statistical Service of Cyprus). It appears that graduates of Secondary Education were knowledgeable of trends related to actual earnings of previous years. Finally, through the questions raised in personal interviews with vocational education and training stakeholders such as Technical School Headmasters, Officers of the Directorate of STVE, the General Director of the Human Resource Development Authority of Cyprus and the Director of the Cyprus Productivity Centre, STVE in Cyprus is evaluated. The findings point to positive evaluation of its important and multifaceted role, the positive perception of the interviewees regarding the relation between cost and benefit in STVE and the employability of its graduates. Weaknesses and areas where improvements are needed are also identified, such as the strengthening of cooperation with employers and of link between STVE and the labour market. Regarding the limitations of this thesis, the first one is the weakness of the thesis to explore the actual earnings of SGE and STVE graduates in the labour market. Another weakness lies in the inability to measure the additional benefits gained from STVE, in addition to direct economic individual benefits. In addition, the thesis records the perceptions of pupils at a specific point of time. The conclusions that arise from the findings of the thesis have an impact on issues of educational choice which are related to the demand and supply of higher education. Individual rates of return offer the potential, up to a certain extent, of forecasting real needs regarding the level and type of education to be offered.

Στόχος της έρευνας Η διατριβή πραγματεύεται ένα πολύ σημαντικό θέμα που αφορά στη σχέση κρατικών οικονομικών χoρηγιών με την αποτελεσματικότητα της σχολικής μονάδας στη δευτεροβάθμια δημόσια εκπαίδευση της Κύπρου. Συγκεκριμένα, η έρευνα στοχεύει να διακριβώσει κατά πόσο υπάρχει οποιαδήποτε αιτιώδης σχέση μεταξύ των εκπαιδευτικών δαπανών που διατίθενται για τη δημόσια Δευτεροβάθμια Εκπαίδευση της Κύπρου και των επιδόσεων των μαθητών, όπως αυτές καταγράφονται στα αποτελέσματα των Παγκύπριων Εξετάσεων. Ερευνητικά ερωτήματα Τα ερωτήματα που απαντήθηκαν από την έρευνα είναι τα ακόλουθα: 1. Οι αλλαγές, που παρουσιάζονται στις δημόσιες δαπάνες για την Εκπαίδευση, είτε κατά είδος ή και συνολικά, προβλέπουν αλλαγές στην αποτελεσματικότητα των σχολικών μονάδων; 2. Το μέγεθος του τμήματος (αριθμός των μαθητών) που παρακάθηνται στις Παγκύπριες εξετάσεις επηρεάζει τις επιδόσεις τους; 3. Η γεωγραφική περιοχή, στην οποία υπάγεται η σχολική μονάδα όπου φοιτούν οι μαθητές, επηρεάζει τις επιδόσεις τους; 4. Το φύλο των μαθητών επηρεάζει τις επιδόσεις τους; 5. Οι αλλαγές των διευθυντών των σχολικών μονάδων επηρεάζουν τις επιδόσεις των μαθητών; 6. Ποιο είδος χορηγιών των σχολικών μονάδων επηρεάζει περισσότερο τις επιδόσεις των μαθητών; Μεθοδολογία Η μεθοδολογία που επιλέγηκε για τη διερεύνηση των πιο πάνω ήταν η δευτερογενής ανάλυση δεδομένων, που έτυχαν επεξεργασίας, αφού βασίστηκαν σε στοιχεία που παραχωρήθηκαν από την Υπηρεσία Εξετάσεων, τη Διεύθυνση Μέσης Εκπαίδευσης, το Λογιστήριο του Υπουργείου Παιδείας και Πολιτισμού και τη Στατιστική Υπηρεσία Κύπρου. Για τη διερεύνηση των πιθανών αιτιωδών σχέσεων ανάμεσα στις αλλαγές των εισροών και στις αλλαγές των μαθησιακών αποτελεσμάτων χρησιμοποιήθηκαν δύο μέθοδοι. Η πρώτη μέθοδος βασίζεται στον απλό συσχετισμό επενδύσεων και μαθησιακών αποτελεσμάτων και έχει χρησιμοποιηθεί στο παρελθόν και από άλλους ερευνητές στον χώρο της εκπαιδευτικής οικονομίας. Η δεύτερη μέθοδος, η οποία δεν έχει χρησιμοποιηθεί σε παρόμοιες έρευνες μέχρι σήμερα, είναι η μέθοδος της διακριτικής ανάλυσης με την οποία ελέγχθηκε κατά πόσο οι αλλαγές στις εκπαιδευτικές εισροές είναι δυνατόν να ερμηνεύσουν αλλαγές στην αποτελεσματικότητα των σχολικών μονάδων. Αποτελέσματα/Συμπεράσματα της έρευνας Η έρευνα κατέληξε στα πιο κάτω βασικά συμπεράσματα: Α) Η επίδραση των εκπαιδευτικών εισροών στα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα (Γενικός Βαθμός Κατάταξης των Παγκύπριων Εξετάσεων) παρουσιάζεται στις περισσότερες χρονιές από το 2008 μέχρι το 2012 να είναι στατιστικά σημαντική στις περιπτώσεις που αυτές αφορούν στο φύλο του μαθητή, στις βελτιώσεις/επεκτάσεις, στον εξοπλισμό των εργαστηρίων/ειδικών αιθουσών και στην Τεχνολογία/Πληροφορική. Αντίθετα, δεν επηρεάζουν καθόλου οι εκπαιδευτικές εισροές τα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα, την ηλικία, το ποσοστό των απόρων, το μέγεθος της τάξης, οι διευθυντές των σχολείων και τα αναλώσιμα. Β) Τη διετία 2011 – 2012 οι αλλαγές στο επίπεδο αποτελεσματικότητας των σχολικών μονάδων που ανήκαν στα Λιγότερο Αποτελεσματικά και έγιναν Τυπικά μπόρεσαν να ερμηνεύσουν τις διαφορές στα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα των συγκεκριμένων χρονικών περιόδων, Αυτό ερμηνεύεται ότι στην κατηγορία αυτή των σχολείων μπορεί να λειτουργήσουν θετικά οι εκπαιδευτικές δαπάνες και γενικά οι εισροές στην προσπάθεια για βελτίωση της αποτελεσματικότητάς τους. Τα πιο πάνω αποτελέσματα συζητήθηκαν και ερμηνεύτηκαν βάσει του συγκειμένου και των χαρακτηριστικών του πληθυσμού της έρευνας. Η συζήτηση κατέδειξε την αναγκαιότητα τόσο για περαιτέρω διερεύνηση των σχέσεων μεταξύ των μεταβλητών όσο και για διαφοροποίηση υφιστάμενων πολιτικών και πρακτικών στο επίπεδο του εκπαιδευτικού συστήματος και των σχολικών μονάδων. The economic crisis resulted in the scarcity of financial resources which inevitably affected the costs of education. The probability of impending reductions in these costs is the focus of interest of many stakeholders and due to the different views expressed regarding the level of education expenditures, a great concern was created among those responsible for education policy. In recent years, the total expenditure on education in Cyprus, as a percentage of Gross National Product (GNP), was quite high, classifying the island in the highest places in comparison with the average educational expenditure of the countries of the European Union (EU). Nevertheless, this does not prove that the education provided in Cyprus is qualitatively better than in other countries, whose total expenditure on education represents a smaller percentage of their GNP. This raises the crucial question whether the amounts invested by the Cyprus Government in education have the desired results on students’ outcomes since the results of Cypriot students in international exams, such as TIMSS, PISA, PIAAC, are among the lowest of the participating countries of the European Union. This research attempts to investigate whether there is any causal relationship between educational expenditure and students’ learning outcomes. Specifically, our research investigates the extent to which changes in the effectiveness of schools can be related to changes in the educational expenditure. The methodology used to conduct this study, was based on quantitative methods, and the secondary data used was analyzed using the SPSS statistical program and the program MLwiN for multilevel analysis. The use of multilevel analysis aimed at identifying the effect of the following input variables on schools’ effectiveness: 1. at student level: gender 2. at school level: (a) The percentage of girls (b) The number of students who are in need of financial support (c) The area in which each school belongs (d) The educational expenses are grouped into the following five categories relating to: i. Renovation of Schools, building of new classes, extension of classes, teachers’ rooms, conferences rooms etc. ii. Laboratory Equipment / special classes iii. Heating / air conditioning iv. Technology / Computers v. Consumables The population of the study consisted of almost 9.500 students who participated in the Pancyprian Exams (admissions examinations for Cypriot and Greek Universities) and had graduated from 44 high schools (Lyceums) in Cyprus. The study analyzed the results of the exams covering five years from 2008 to 2012 and attempted to provide answers to the following five questions: 1. Are the changes in schooling resources related to changes in the effectiveness status of schools? 2. Does the class size affect student achievement? 3. Does the gender of the student affect his/her achievement? 4. Does the change of Principals influence students’ outcomes? 5. Which of the input variables affects students' outcomes to a greater extent? Our study used secondary data which was provided by the Service Examinations, the Accounting Department of the Ministry of Education and Culture, and the Statistical Service of Cyprus.
