This study investigates how lower-level English language learners achieve and maintain intersubjectivity and navigate through co-constructed framings during context-embedded tasks such as improvised role-play. In language education settings, activities associated with interactions often reflect multi-layered participant orientations beyond mere linguistic execution. From the perspectives of ethnomethodology and conversation analysis, linguistic actions are effective only when they are intersubjectively understood: the complexity of an activity necessitates corresponding levels of intersubjectivity for smooth progression. A close examination of sequence development in role-play activities shows how intersubjectivity is preserved as interlocutors engage in aligning and affiliative moves to avoid potential disruptions and maximize mutual contributions. Interlocutors' progressive inputs are integrated as intersubjectively sustained elements of ongoing interaction framings only when collaboratively developed by the participating parties. The analysis also addresses the impact of online communication tools, acknowledging their increasingly essential role in online teaching. The results suggest the need for a dynamic concept of 'framing,' replacing 'frame,' and recommend that conversation analysis should account for the multi-layered contexts of surrounding activities. We reply to Esposito and Möllering by clarifying what we meant by the procedure of “critical reconstruction”. It is not an external critique, because we have carefully followed the logic of trust research. But it is also not easily reconcilable with trust research, as Möllering argues, because we show that by doing so one is led to certain aporias, conundrums, and contradictions that do not permit leaving the concept as we found it. We reject any attempt to found the concept of trust in a theoretical constant such as complexity or irreducible uncertainty, and emphasize the need for an ethnomethodological approach that limits itself to how the actors themselves draw the distinctions between trust and blind faith, trust and mistrust, etc. This commitment is all the more necessary now, when trust research has become part of the very phenomenon it studies.

What is trust and how should it be studied? In this essay, we seek to reconstruct the sociological theory of trust and propose an alternate strategy focused on analyzing the skillful nature of the “trust methods” employed by ordinary people. Instead of treating trust as a static property that can be measured by close-format survey questions, we conceptualize trusting as a skillful practice that is highly context-dependent and attuned to temporal variables such as speed, duration, sequence, and timing. To illustrate this approach, we draw on interviews with Long COVID patients focusing on how they account for who, what, when and how they distinguish responsible trust from blind faith.

This study aims to reveal the meaning of profit in the "pade angen" tobacco farming community in Ganti village. This research uses the interpretive paradigm and ethnomethodology as the research method. Data collection techniques consist of observation, interviews and documentation with a sample of 10 people. Data analysis techniques in this study used indexicality, reflexivity and contextual action analysis. The results of this research show that the meaning of profit based on the perspective of the tobacco farming community where farmers call it bati is twofold, namely material and immaterial. The material meaning is shown by the ability of farmers to pay off their debts, the independence of farmers to meet the needs of life and the ability of farmers to pay for their children's education. The immaterial meaning is shown by the attitude of kinship and mutual trust. This research contributes to the importance of recording accounting because the character of accounting farmers only makes simple records as a reminder of cash in and out so that farmers cannot know the exact profit of each planting period.

The article presents an editorial focuses on examining the complex relationships between Conversation Analysis (CA), sociology, and social theory, exploring how CA's connections to sociology have evolved since its inception, including its role in understanding the micro-macro linkage in social dynamics. Topics include the historical and intellectual roots of CA within sociology and the incorporation of social theory to address power dynamics and inequalities in conversational interactions.

The text reconstructs the concepts of practice and practicality used in ethnomethodology and conversation analysis and examines their internal similarities and differences as well as similarities and differences to other practice theories. After a description of the characteristics of practice theories, the ethnomethodological perspective on practice and practicality is presented. Then, the use of the terms in conversation analysis is examined. Ethnomethodology uses the notions of “practice” and “practicality” to outline a non-metaphysical theory of social order in which the sharedness of rules or meanings is not presupposed. “Practical” here means that social action, and social order more generally, are practically grounded as well as temporally and situationally constrained. The fact that practical action is fundamentally situated and can only be understood “from within” establishes an essentially indexical character of practical action. In conversation analysis, “practices” are viewed as “context-free” but “context-sensitive” components that constitute action and as such become the objects of investigation. While some have diagnosed a departure of conversation analysis from its ethnomethodological roots, I argue that “context-freeness” and “context-sensitivity” should be complemented by “context-productivity” by reference to Garfinkel’s interpretation of Aron Gurwitsch’s gestalt phenomenology in order to formulate a more encompassing concept of practice. The sudden change in the existing order due to the COVID-19 pandemic caused chaos and confusion. The uncertainty and anxiety caused by chaos and confusion necessitated the reconstruction of the social order in accordance with the pandemic conditions. Therefore, we should consider the sudden change of the social order and its reconstruction when evaluating the COVID-19 pandemic in a sociological context. Since these two processes are ethnomethodologically significant, the aim of the study is to interpret the social changes that occurred during the COVID-19 process within the framework of ethnomethodology theory. Various examples provide an ethnomethodological evaluation of Türkiye's reactions to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent re-establishment of social order. This article analyzes, using ethnomethodology concepts, the irrational reactions of people in a life without rules due to the sudden disruption of the existing order by COVID- 19, the helplessness of social institutions in the face of the pandemic, and the reconstruction of social order with rational rules to lessen anxiety and chaos. People meeting a robot for the first time do not know what it is capable of and therefore how to interact with it—what actions to produce, and how to produce them. Despite social robotics' long-standing interest in the effects of robots' appearance and conduct on users, and efforts to identify factors likely to improve human–robot interaction, little attention has been paid to how participants evaluate their robotic partner in the unfolding of actual interactions. This paper draws from qualitative analyses of video-recorded interactions between a robot and groups of participants, in the framework of ethnomethodology and conversation analysis. We analyse the particular ways in which participants shape their embodied actions, how they can reproduce a prior action that failed to obtain a response from the robot; and how they explore the robot's embodied nature. We find a set of recurrent methods or practices, showing that robot-recipient design displays not only participants' initial assumptions about the robot's competences, but also more importantly perhaps their continuous assessment of the robot's behaviour, and their attempts to adapt to it. Participants locally produce and constantly revise their understanding of the robot as a more or less competent co-participant, drawing from its past, current, and projected conduct and responsiveness. We discuss the implications of these findings for research in robotics and human–robot interactions, and the value of the approach to shed new light on old questions by paying attention to the quality of gesture and the sequential organisation of interaction. Young people with borderline intelligence functioning (BIF) have intellectual functioning at the border between intellectual disability and those considered neurotypical. This population group is often underrepresented in social research, which makes it difficult to understand their experiences and needs. The research aims to understand the daily lives of young people with BIF to identify needs that society might not be aware of. The study was conducted with a sample of 30 young people. The ethnomethodological design was appropriate for the study of the routines and daily dynamics of these young people, which allowed the researchers to understand the experiences and meanings of the participants from their own perspective. The analysis was carried out in the context of the subject of Qualitative Research Tools in Social Work with fourth-year students, through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and field diaries. Data analysis was performed using the Atlas.ti23 qualitative content analysis program. The findings suggest a strong dependence on family and social support; a daily life marked by challenges; and a search for autonomy, among many other aspects. This paper focuses on live streams as interactional phenomena from an ethnomethodology and conversation analysis (EMCA) perspective. It discusses how streamers and viewers manage attention and engagement and how noticing-based actions constitute a powerful and crucial resource to produce and display these, finely tuned to the asymmetric communicative affordances of live streams, which, in the case of expository live streams, enact a streamer on display for the perceptual consumption of remote viewers. It discusses how streamers and viewers may produce noticing sequences and noticing-based sequences. It also discusses how the orientation towards noticing in expository live streams may become contagious and lead to a 'noticing effervescence.' • Streams and streamers are oriented toward eliciting various responses from viewers. • A powerful resource for viewers to achieve engagement is to send messages designed as noticing-based actions. • Noticing-based actions index some prior perceptual realization regarding features or events in the stream. • Noticing-based action implies that what is treated as noticeable is deeply embedded in message designs. • Such an action format casts viewers as onlookers, framing the streaming activity as a spectacle. The Bidayuh cuisines and culinary practices epitomize an inherent part of the cultural profile of the Sarawak community. This indigenous group (Bidayuh) is the second-largest group contributing to the Sarawak's distinctive identity after the Iban. The distribution of the Bidayuh community is predominantly across the districts of Lundu, Bau, Kuching and Serian in Sarawak. There are concerns that the Bidayuh traditional culinary culture will gradually beset by modernization. Many prefer convenience over the hassle of cooking using the traditional manner, hence diluting the traditional culinary knowledge among the younger generations. Therefore, ethnomethodology, a qualitative research approach, was utilized to explore the traditional culinary practices and the connotation of food among the Bidayuh indigenous group in Sarawak, Malaysia. The data were collected from nine informants [Kampong Gumbang in Bau District (n = 5) and Kampung Mongkos in Serian District (n = 4)] who had voluntarily participated in this study. Through the ethnomethodological lens, this study documented eight traditional Bidayuh recipes and the collective development of the gastronomic culture of this community that are still remembered and practiced today. As part of ongoing research bridging ethnomethodology and computer science, in this article we offer an alternate reading of Alan Turing's 1936 paper, "On Computable Numbers". Following through Turing's machinic respecification of computation, we hope to contribute to a deflationary position on AI by showing that the activities attributed to AIs are achieved in the course of methodic hands-on work with computational systems and not in isolation by them. Turing's major innovation was a demonstration that mathematical and logical operations could be broken down into elementary, mechanically executable operations, devoid of intellectual content. Drawing out lessons from a re-enactment of Turing's methods as a means of reflecting on contemporary artificial intelligence (AI), including the way those methods disappear into the technology, we will suggest the interesting question raised in "On Computable Numbers" is less about the possibilities of designing machines that "can think" (cf. Ethnomethodology has been influential in many social science fields, including and especially applied linguistics, where conversation analysis is a major subfield for analyzing oral data. Nevertheless, ethnomethodology can also be—and has been—fruitfully applied to written discursive data, using its tools and methods to describe in detail how written texts are assembled and reflexively used, as members' methods, for doing and displaying social actions. This paper proposes an open analytical model to capture existing ethnomethodological analyses of written discourse and create a more transparent and replicable protocol for new analyses. I reconstruct ethnomethodology as set of assumptions and principles, review seminal research that used these principles to analyze written discourse, and present the master concept of "active text" that encapsulates them. I then construct a hierarchical prospective-retrospective model to formalize the methods used in ethnomethodology of written discourse. I use the model to reconstruct the analytical methods of two papers to show how it can be used for transparency and replication. The discussion section covers modelling in qualitative applied linguistics and ethnomethodology, and ends with some conclusions. • Ethnomethodology has a long relationship with discourse analysis, but focused on oral registers. • Ethnomethodology can be conceptualized a set of ontological and epistemological assumptions and principles. • A formalized and open analytical model can be used to apply ethnomethodology to written discursive data. • A model can help make ethnomethodological analysis of discursive data easier to apply and more replicable. Background: This article focuses on communication in team-based esports, particularly in the ways that callouts enable players in team-based First-Person Shooters (FPS) to collaboratively link their own perception and awareness of in-game actions to that of their teammates. Callouts are short, community-based utterances that players use to communicate vital details of fast-paced action in competitive games. Aim: We provide an empirically-based theorization of why callouts appear to be especially important in team-based FPS games, which, because of the limited fields of vision and split-second decision-making, require players to communicate what is happening to the others in the team as they navigate the game environment. Methods: To describe this distributed perception, we borrow from studies on active military settings that term this seeing together as interperceptivity and employ ethnomethodology in our analysis of the minute details of players' actions in the screen recordings as they extended their team's collective perception and awareness of in-game activities and events. Results: Through this paper, we contribute to the ongoing research on understanding communication and collaboration in team-based games. The callout sequences (and aligning actions) are orienting towards sharing individual perceptions for the (co)construction of an interperceptivity of in-game activities. Hence, callouts form a precondition for coordinated play. Conclusion: The introduction of this concept to game studies can help in making sense of a key capability in networked team-based games; that is, how players collectively construct a situational awareness that encompasses teammates' perception. Also, because of the essential role of callouts and interperceptivity in highly-skilled networked play, we point to some of the cultural contexts in which this practice is accomplished. This article introduces a praxeological framework for studying disinformation grounded on French pragmatism and American ethnomethodology. It underscores the relevance of looking upon the communicative setting where individuals must be engaged to tell deceptive stories. In addition, it foregrounds participants' attitudinal commitment to an ongoing interaction that may drive them to believe in disinformation in particular circumstances. This study adds to the scholarly work on disinformation by extending individual-level explanations for the appeal of deceptive messages. It also presents the concept of situations of disinformation as a heuristic notion that draws attention to the instances where falsehoods sound relevant. Last, it advances an empirical-driven framework with several methodological recommendations for further research. Certain schools of phenomenological psychiatry conceive of schizophrenia as a pathology of common-sense. Ethnomethodological enquiry, with its roots in Schutzian social phenomenology, takes as its domain, topic, and substance of study the ongoing achievement of a common-sense world between social members. Yet, dialogue between psychiatry and ethnomethodological approaches is thin. In this article, we discuss a conversation analytic approach to schizophrenic interaction which has generated and utilized a model of a five-world manifold to frame analyses of talk-in-interaction. 'Worlds' are conceived, after Schutz, as finite domains of meaning, and the model operates as a breach of natural attitude assumptions to examine mechanisms of the constitution of the one-world-in-common of common-sense. It is suggested that certain aspects of schizophrenic talk might receive account in terms of a loss of integration between these five domains of meaning. Conversation Analytic methods were applied to transcripts of audio recordings of psychiatric interviews but encountered hurdles that motivated the broadening of methodological scope. Such hurdles included a weakening of the next turn proof procedure, implicit reification of the schizophrenia construct, and problems of translation presented by the analyst's normative membership encountering non-normative life-worlds of schizophrenic experience. Strategic responses to these hurdles included exploring linkages between phenomenological psychiatry and ethnomethodological approaches, as well as an engagement of ethnomethodological self-reflection and conceptual clarification of the schizophrenia construct in line with Garfinkel's unique adequacy requirement. The manifold model is glossed, and interaction between two of its worlds - a world of concrete, situational immediacies and another of abstract organizations - is explored in more detail via analysis of conversational data. It is suggested that the five-world model, along with further micro-analysis of talk-in-interaction, might have implications in psychiatry for topics such as autism, double bookkeeping, concretism, theories of disturbed indexicality, and insight attribution. We conclude that the consideration of atypical interaction obliges the interaction analyst to take account of their own implicit normative world-frames and that the use of domain-specific top-down models in conjunction with the inductive approach of Conversation Analysis may extend the reach of CA to facilitate productive dialogue with other disciplines. The objective of this article is to contribute on the mobile as a methodological concept through a feminist ethnomethodological ethnography on collective actions of sex workers in northern Chile, based on three methodological tools: transit, liminality and intimate connections. We define transit as the movements between virtual, face-to-face, hybrid and mobile spaces according to the participants' everyday life. Liminality as the analysis of borders, as spaces of encounter and misencounter to observe heterogeneity and the confrontation of differences. Intimate connections as the monitoring of materialities of significant presence in the field, which are assembled with the methods of the participants and take on diverse meanings. Thus, we propose an ethnographic practice that moves and mobilizes according to its participants, that breaks dualisms, that is fluid and, in this framework, becomes politically and ethically entangled. This article proposes the concept of assemmethodology, which combines assemblage theory and ethnomethodology. Relating to the ongoing studies in sociomateriality, this article advances our understanding of the details of social conduct and the consequentiality of materials. By explicating the role of the situation and its processual becoming, which is inherent in ethnomethodology, and by replacing the unit of analysis from the individual to the assemblage made up of heterogenous elements, this article contributes to communication research that seeks to advance our understanding of the ways in which humans are entangled with the material world. As a perspicuous case for the study of assemmethodology, this article explores situations in which screens are assembled with humans and other materials in social situations. This article describes the collective actions by the community of the neighborhood Ciudadela Colsubsidio-El Cortijo in Bogotá, which respond to the socioenvironmental conflict between the State and the people over the dispute of the usage of the territory, during the period 2021-2022. Through ethnomethodology, the factors that produce the socio-environmental conflict were identified, actions that responded to the conflict were systematized and the scope of those actions were analyzed. Therefore, it is said that in Ciudadela Colsubsidio-El Cortijo, the community is rethinking how to live in the neighborhood from a perspective of the right to the city. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Institutions are often taken for granted, serving as backgrounded typifications that guide our interactions. Instead of considering this taken-for-grantedness as a natural, self-sustaining feature of institutions, I argue here that it is a fundamental, precarious, and ongoing accomplishment. Drawing on ethnomethodology, I theoretically elaborate the intricate interactional choreography through which taken-for-grantedness is achieved—as institutional typifications are skillfully drawn into, and enacted in, social interactions—and highlight how this choreography can itself generate oddities, or breaks in the typified expectations between interactants. These oddities, if not resolved by interactants' corrective sensemaking, generate substantive breaches in taken-for-grantedness, potentially with significant downstream consequences for institutional maintenance and change. I then expand upon this baseline interactional model by suggesting that local choreographies vary in their characteristics, in ways that affect the incidence of oddities and breaches across settings. I theorize four such characteristics: choreographical fluidity, ordinary accountability, directorial sensegiving, and material scene-setting. Technologies based on “artificial intelligence” (AI) are transforming every part of our society, including healthcare and medical institutions. An example of this trend is the novel field in oncology and radiology called radiomics, which is the extracting and mining of large-scale quantitative features from medical imaging by machine-learning (ML) algorithms. This paper explores situated work with a radiomics software platform, QuantImage (v2), and interaction around it, in educationally framed hands-on trial sessions where pairs of novice users (physicians and medical radiology technicians) work on a radiomics task consisting of developing a predictive ML model with a co-present tutor. Informed by ethnomethodology and conversation analysis (EM/CA), the results show that learning about radiomics more generally and learning how to use this platform specifically are deeply intertwined. Common-sense knowledge (e.g., about meanings of colors) can interfere with the visual representation standards established in the professional domain. Participants' skills in using the platform and knowledge of radiomics are routinely displayed in the assessment of performance measures of the resulting ML models, in the monitoring of the platform's pace of operation for possible problems, and in the ascribing of independent actions (e.g., related to algorithms) to the platform. The findings are relevant to current discussions about the explainability of AI in medicine as well as issues of machinic agency.

This study investigates the role of callouts as a vital communicative and coordinating practice in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO), a team-based networked first-person shooter (FPS) video game. Through callouts, players share relevant information regarding opponents’ locations and movements, contributing to a co-construction of a distributed knowledge of the game environment. By analyzing callouts as a coordinating device that is part of sequences of actions, this research delves into their significance in shaping the overall structural organization of activities in competitive CS:GO gameplay. The analysis also demonstrates the utility of ethnomethodological conversation analysis (EMCA) for understanding the communicative richness of social practices in team-based networked video games.

As researchers, we take the subjectivity we have formed over time into each research project. These subjective traces are a product of our lived experiences, gradually shaping our perceptions and interpretations of the world. Despite being an Indigenous scholar, my lived experience has not primarily occurred within Indigenous settings, resulting in biased subjectivities emerging while researching First Nations communities. This paper describes my subjective traces and reflects on the biases I uncovered while researching Indigenous communities. The reflection consists of three main sections: a personal background, a description of experiences in the research sites, and a discussion of what the reflections mean to the decolonization of academia. Overall, I hope that the insights in this reflection go beyond the mere recognition of Indigenous voices and encourage Indigenous researcher activism toward advancing and diversifying academia. In this paper, we demonstrate how performing and belonging paradoxes act as triggers, mitigators and amplifiers for each other in moment-by-moment interaction. We show how expressing a performing paradox as part of group practice triggers belonging tensions, particularly when there is a strong expectation towards a uniform value-base. We further demonstrate how a familiar performing paradox at the organization level is constructed to mitigate the belonging tensions through latency. This leads to an amplification dynamic where a paradox that is more socially appropriate is reinforced in order to cope with a more interactionally problematic one. Our results speak to research on the intertwined nature of paradoxical tensions and the relationship between latency and salience in working through paradox. Our study advocates for developing a more systematic approach for studying the interactional foundations of organizational paradox and offers ethnomethodological conversation analysis as one means to achieve improved understanding in this domain. As technologies that put the body at the center of mathematics learning enter formal and informal learning spaces, we still know little about the teaching methods educators can use to support students’ learning with these specialized systems. Drawing on ethnomethodology and conversation analysis (EMCA) and the Co-Operative Action framework, we present three multimodal ways that educators can be responsive to learners’ embodied ideas and help them transform sensorimotor patterns into mathematically significant perceptions. These techniques include (1) encouraging learners to use gesture to express and reflect on their ideas, (2) presenting multimodal candidate understandings to check comprehension of learners’ embodied ideas, and (3) co-constructing multimodally expressed embodied ideas with learners. We demonstrate how these techniques create opportunities for learning and discuss implications for a multimodal, embodied practice of responsive teaching.

Drawing on ethnomethodology and conversation analysis (EMCA) and the Co-Operative Action framework, we present three multimodal ways that educators can be responsive to learners’ embodied ideas and help them transform sensorimotor patterns into mathematically significant perceptions. These techniques include (1) encouraging learners to use gesture to express and reflect on their ideas, (2) presenting multimodal candidate understandings to check comprehension of learners’ embodied ideas, and (3) co-constructing multimodally expressed embodied ideas with learners. We demonstrate how these techniques create opportunities for learning and discuss implications for a multimodal, embodied practice of responsive teaching.

Purpose – This research aims to explore a deep understanding of the internalization of the five principles of the Pesantren among all stakeholders, especially the students. Another goal is to explore the essence and implementation of the Panca Jiwa Pondok of the Pesantren that have been initiated by the founders of Pondok Pesantren Gontor in Ponorogo, East Java, and how Gontor alums and non-alumni boarding schools adopt this. Design/methods/approach – This research uses a qualitative method with an ethnomethodological approach. This method focuses on the resources, procedures, and practices that group or community members use to produce and recognize social realities that can be sensed. The research was conducted at Al Kamal Islamic Boarding School in Tambaksari Kuwarasan, Kebumen, Indonesia. Data was collected through natural interviews in daily life involving researchers in the pesantren environment. The data analysis process was conducted descriptively since the first data collection, so it did not wait for excessive data accumulation. Findings – This research reveals three main characteristics of the Panca Jiwa Pondok: strengthening of social piety, strengthening of intrapersonal aspects, and spirituality. The internalization process of "Panca Jiwa Pondok" to the students through stages: introduction, thinking, imitation, and internalization, as well as interpretation. Research implications – The findings of this study have important implications for educational institutions, both general and Islamic-based, regarding the implementation and strengthening of the five principles of the Pesantren in teaching and learning activities. This is expected to help students or students understand the essence of learning so that they can grow into individuals with strong character as learners.

Certain schools of phenomenological psychiatry conceive of schizophrenia as a pathology of common-sense. Ethnomethodological enquiry, with its roots in Schutzian social phenomenology, takes as its domain, topic, and substance of study the ongoing achievement of a common-sense world between social members. Yet, dialogue between psychiatry and ethnomethodological approaches is thin. In this article, we discuss a conversation analytic approach to schizophrenic interaction which has generated and utilized a model of a five-world manifold to frame analyses of talk-in-interaction. ‘Worlds’ are conceived, after Schutz, as finite domains of meaning, and the model operates as a breach of natural attitude assumptions to examine mechanisms of the constitution of the one-world-in-common of common-sense. It is suggested that certain aspects of schizophrenic talk might receive account in terms of a loss of integration between these five domains of meaning. Conversation Analytic methods were applied to transcripts of audio recordings of psychiatric interviews but encountered hurdles that motivated the broadening of methodological scope. Such hurdles included a weakening of the next turn proof procedure, implicit reification of the schizophrenia construct, and problems of translation presented by the analyst’s normative membership encountering non-normative life-worlds of schizophrenic experience. Strategic responses to these hurdles included exploring linkages between phenomenological psychiatry and ethnomethodological approaches, as well as an engagement of ethnomethodological self-reflection and conceptual clarification of the schizophrenia construct in line with Garfinkel’s unique adequacy requirement. The manifold model is glossed, and interaction between two of its worlds – a world of concrete, situational immediacies and another of abstract organizations – is explored in more detail via analysis of conversational data. It is suggested that the five-world model, along with further micro-analysis of talk-in-interaction, might have implications in psychiatry for topics such as autism, double bookkeeping, concretism, theories of disturbed indexicality, and insight attribution. We conclude that the consideration of atypical interaction obliges the interaction analyst to take account of their own implicit normative world-frames and that the use of domain-specific top-down models in conjunction with the inductive approach of Conversation Analysis may extend the reach of CA to facilitate productive dialogue with other disciplines.

Background: This paper reports on an investigation of male primary student teachers about their planning and teaching over the course of the 2021 year. Three male student teachers’ experiences are presented. Purpose: This study highlights how they negotiated the intersections of self with school, identity, and gender as male student teachers. Method: In weekly semi-structured peer group discussions student teachers were asked to describe the decisions that they made in planning, to reflect on the nature of the decision-making process that they went through, and about the consequences of this process. As necessary, questions were posed to the groups to further stimulate discussions. Written notes were taken from these discussions and used in combination with visiting lecturer notes about their teaching practice. Results: It was through the combination of these classroom activities and teaching practice observations that ethnomethodology and symbolic interactionism intersected with these student teachers’ self with school, identity, and gender. Ethnomethodology concerns how social order is established through social interactions while symbolic interactionism includes both verbal and non-verbal communication. It has been known that past experiences are the foundations of future experiences. The three male primary student teachers presented in this study support this assertion through their inward-looking and/or outward looking narratives. Conclusion: This study adds to our understanding of the importance of what messages schools, colleagues, and the wider community are sending to male primary teachers about their work and worth as primary teachers.

In this article, we offer some observations on the international standing of communicative constructivism (CoCo), as discussed in scholarship published largely in German over the past decade (e.g., KELLER, KNOBLAUCH & REICHERTZ, 2013; KNOBLAUCH, 2019a [2016]; REICHERTZ, 2009). We seek to explain why, in our view, CoCo has not thus far had a noticeable influence on academic discourse in international, particularly Anglo-American, sociology. Amongst others, we highlight issues regarding the name that was picked for the perspective and regarding the literal translation of German CoCo terminology into the English language. We also point to some theoretical and methodological choices that have made it difficult to link CoCo to interactionist sociology in general, and to ethnomethodology and ethnography in particular, i.e., perspectives that we are closely aligned with. We conclude with a summary of our observations and a few suggested steps communicative constructivists might consider taking to broaden and diversify the appeal of their program beyond German speaking sociology. The two-volume Russian-language opus "Motherhood in the Soviet Village: Rituals, Discourses, and Practices" by Liubov Golubeva and Sofia Kupriianova explores the concept and realities of motherhood in the Arkhangelsk and Vologda regions of Russia from the late 19th century to the present, with a focus on transitions during the Soviet era. The article employs ethnomethodological conversation analysis (CA) and experimental video analysis to scrutinize the gaze behavior of urban passersby. We operationalize Goffman's concept of civil inattention to make it an empirical research object with defined boundaries. Video analysis enabled measurement of gaze lengths to establish measures for “normal” gazes within civil inattention and to account for their breaches. We also studied the dependence of gazing behavior on the recipient's social appearance by comparing the unmarked condition, the experimenter wearing casual, indistinctive clothes, to marked conditions, the experimenter wearing either a distinct sunhat or an abaya and niqab. The breaches of civil inattention toward marked gaze recipients were 10-fold compared to unmarked recipients. Furthermore, the analysis points out the commonality of hitherto unknown micro gazes and multiple gazes. Together the findings suggest the existence of subconscious monitoring beneath the public social order, which pre-structures interaction order, and indicates that stigmatization is a source for relational segregation.

The contributions to this special issue investigate rare, acute and hard-to-access interactions in situations of crisis, conflict and emergency. They study low frequency but high stakes communication between crisis-related professionals and citizens, or among professional parties themselves. The data used for the analysis are audio and/or video recordings of naturally occurring and real-life events, either actual crisis situations or training situations. The settings range from audio-only emergency telephone calls to complex multimodal training events, including police negotiations with suicidal persons, suicide helplines, police-lay people interactions, call/dispatch centres, mass casualty exercises, and United Nations crisis management training. By building on the background and principles of ethnomethodology and conversation analysis (EMCA), the studies focus on live interactions in various situations involving crisis as they unfold in real time. The topics range from preparing and training for crises before they have happened to ongoing live crisis; how decision-making happens in time-limited environments which are also uncertain or ambiguous in nature; how professionals deal with unpredictable external challenges (e.g., technology failure), and how the management of extraordinary events may nevertheless be routinized. The papers in the special issue show how interaction in crisis settings actually unfolds, moment by moment and step by step. They complement an emerging body of EMCA work on acute crisis, which is not only proving impactful on the organizations themselves (e.g., via research-based training), but also on our fundamental understanding of the organization of talk. • The articles in the SI investigate communication during crises and emergencies. • They study events involving dispatchers, medics, police, soldiers, call-handlers. • They analyse practices that shape events and outcomes in crisis interaction. • They analyse hard-to-access audio and/or video recordings of real-life events. • The SI extends research in pragmatics on crisis and emergency interactions. This article aims to describe the accountability practiced in credit unions. This study examines formal and informal practices and underlying approaches to accountability to members. Design/methodology/approach, namely with an ethnomethodological approach, this study explores accountability of Credit Union in Indonesia, through interviews and observations with practitioners, management, government, and credit union members, as well as documentation analysis. The results of the study found that Credit Union Sauan Sibarrung prioritizes accountability to members through the actualization of the vision and mission, which is manifested concretely in the preparation of programs (business plans) in the form of mindset transformation through Education and Training Programs, Savings and Loans Programs to increase the productivity and quality of life of members, Social and Economic Empowerment Programs to the fostered business groups and communities in a sustainable manner. The article describes the methodological features of conversation analysis (CA) and a special understanding of sociology which is embedded in its program and reflected in the categories of observational science, radical empiricism, micro-interactions and “talk-in-interaction”. The interpretation of the concept of social order incorporated in the program of conversation analysis is presented. “Turn-taking” concept and “one speaker at a time” principle are discussed. They are shown to be crucial for the (re-)production of the local structure of a conversation. Finally, the article includes the overview of transcript preparation and analysis procedures developed in CA research.
