Reporting the theoretical analysis of YBCO growth during post annealing in the TFA-MOD process considering the diffusion in the boundary layer as well as the growth kinetics at the precursor/YBCO interface is reviewed. The results show that the mass transfer in the gas boundary layer limited the growth rate.

Abstract

The development of a 1T/1kA-class alternating current (AC) superconducting coil is described. The superconductor used for the AC coil, which is labeled 'full-cable,' consists of seven subcables which are made up of 12 strands. To examine the stability, the sub-cable coil and single strand coil were also fabricated and tested. Results confirm that the quench point of the developed AC coil reaches to 1.396(sub peak)/1288A(sub peak).

Abstract

Proton beam therapy (PBT) is a potential new alternative to treatment with photon radiotherapy that may reduce the risk of late toxicity and secondary cancer, especially for pediatric tumors. The goal of this study was to evaluate the long‐term benefits of PBT in cancer survivors. A retrospective observational study of pediatric patients who received PBT was performed at four institutions in Japan. Of 343 patients, 62 were followed up for 5 or more years. These patients included 40 males and 22 females, and had a median age of 10 years (range: 0–19 years) at the time of treatment. The irradiation dose ranged from 10.8 to 81.2 GyE (median: 50.4 GyE). The median follow‐up period was 8.1 years (5.0–31.2 years). The 5‐, 10‐ and 20‐year rates for grade 2 or higher late toxicities were 18%, 35% and 45%, respectively, and those for grade 3 or higher late toxicities were 6%, 17% and 17% respectively. Univariate analysis showed that the irradiated site (head and neck, brain) was significantly associated with late toxicities. No malignant secondary tumors occurred within the irradiated field. The 10‐ and 20‐year cumulative rates for all secondary tumors, malignant secondary tumors, and malignant nonhematologic secondary tumors were 8% and 16%, 5% and 13%, and 3% and 11%, respectively. Our data indicate that PBT has the potential to reduce the risk of late mortality and secondary malignancy. Longer follow‐up is needed to confirm the benefits of PBT for pediatric tumors.

26. Cross-Recording Reduction by Trial Recording on a Magneto-Optical Disk

Abstract

A technique for reducing cross-recording on data storage media with high track density is described. In order to detect cross-recording sensitively, an inverted mark pattern was first recorded on adjacent tracks and then synchronized with a normal recorded mark pattern on the central track. These patterns were repeatedly recorded as the recording power was increased. Readout signals of the recorded mark pattern were evaluated on the central track in each condition, and an optimum recording power was precisely determined from the maximum amplitude of the signals. When this new technique was applied to a magneto-optical disk, the bit error rate was reduced to less than [10.sup.-4]. This is the first technique to reduce cross-recording by laser power only. Abstract

A new recording and readout technique for land and groove recording on a magnetic super-resolution (MSR) disk is described. The technique uses specifically premastered clock marks. To generate a stable clock signal, the clock marks are fabricated with short bursts in grooves by wobbling at a different frequency from address information. The clock marks and the address information can be separated from a track error signal. When the extracted clock signal is applied to precise recording and readout of the magneto-optical data marks, the bit error rate becomes lower than that of the conventional clock recording/readout system. Additionally, the crosstalk of the wobbled address information to the magneto-optical signal can be canceled out electronically. This new format is not only suitable for high-density recording but also convenient in the disk manufacturing process. Index Terms--Clock mark, land and groove, magneto-optical disk, wobble.

Abstract

Recent progress in the treatment for pediatric malignancies using a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy has improved survival. However, late toxicities of radiotherapy are a concern in long‐term survivors. A recent study suggested reduced secondary cancer and other late toxicities after proton beam therapy (PBT) due to dosimetric advantages. In this study, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of PBT for pediatric patients treated in Japan. A retrospective observational study in pediatric patients who received PBT was performed. All patients aged <20 years old who underwent PBT from January 1983 to August 2014 at four sites in Japan were enrolled in the study. There were 343 patients in the study. The median follow‐up periods were 22.6 months (0.4–374.3 months) for all patients and 30.6 months (0.6–374.3 months) for survivors. The estimated 1‐, 3‐, 5‐, and 10‐year survival rates were 82.7% (95% CI: 78.5–87.0%), 67.4% (61.7–73.2%), 61.4% (54.8–67.9%), and 58.7% (51.5–65.9%), respectively. Fifty‐two events of toxicity ≥ grade 2 occurred in 43 patients. Grade 4 toxicities of myelitis, visual loss (two cases), cerebral vascular disease, and tissue necrosis occurred in five patients. This study provides preliminary results for PBT in pediatric patients in Japan. More experience and follow‐up with this technique are required to establish the efficacy of PBT in this patient population.

Abstract

This paper describes a optimal scheduling method for stock production. We have constructed an optimizing method to decide variety of the half-finished products applying the simulated annealing method and an optimizing method to decide quantity and production timing of half-finished products applying inventory simulation method. The simulated annealing method is used for deciding what kind of half-finished products should be produced to prepare predicted final orders considering the productivity of half-finished products, the production waste of final products and generality of the half-finished products. The inventory simulation is applied to calculate the quantity and production timing of the half-finished products which satisfy a minimum inventory. It is revealed that higher productivity of half-finished products and lower inventory could be achieved by comparing with real production schedule.

Abstract

Super-resolution near-field structure (Super-RENS) was prepared by a heliconwave-plasma sputtering method to improve the disk property that is combined with a magneto-optical (MO) recording disk. Antimony and silver-oxide mask layers were prepared by the method and refractive indices were measured. Recording and retrieving of signals beyond the resolution limit (<370 nm) were achieved for both mask cases. Attempts to optimize the disk structure were also made using a conventional sputtering method. The smallest mark size was around 200 nm and the highest carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) was 30 dB for 300-nm mark and 22 dB for 250-nm, when using a laser wavelength of 780 nm and a numerical aperture of 0.53. We have found that there is a competing super-resolutional mechanism besides Super-RENS that appears when high readout laser power is applied.
