Search

It has been previously demonstrated [Panov et al. Physics of Atomic Nuclei 84(2021)1037] that the TAIGA-HiSCORE Cherenkov array, originally built for cosmic ray physics and ultrahigh-energy gamma-ray astronomy studies using the extensive air shower method, can be used in conventional optical astronomy for wide-field searches for rare nanosecond optical transients of astrophysical origin. The FOV of the facility is on the scale of 1~ster, and it is capable of detecting very rare transients in the visible light range with fluxes greater than approximately 3000~quanta/m$^2$/10~ns (10~ns is the apparatus integration time) and pulse durations of 10\,ns. Among the potential sources of distant nanosecond optical transients are the evaporation of primary black holes, magnetic reconnection in the accretion disks of black holes, and signals from distant lasers of extraterrestrial civilizations. The paper describes the methods and results of the search for optical transients using the TAIGA-HiSCORE Cherenkov array from 2018 to 2022 (four winter seasons of data collection). No reliable astrophysical candidates for optical transients were found. We study the ground and the first excited $0^{+}$ states of two mirror nuclei $^{14}$C and $^{14}$O within a five-cluster model (three alpha-particles and two extra nucleons) with the use of high accuracy variational approach with Gaussian bases. The first excited $0^{+}$ state of these nuclei is shown to be connected with a change of the structure of the two-nucleon subsystem moving in the field of the $^{12}$C cluster. The density distributions, electric form factors (both the elastic and transition ones), pair correlation functions, and the momentum distributions of the constituent particles are found. The physical motivations, present status, main results in study of cosmic rays and in the field of gamma-ray astronomy as well future plans of the TAIGA-1 (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma Astronomy) project are presented. The TAIGA observatory addresses ground-based gamma-ray astronomy and astroparticle physics at energies from a few TeV to several PeV, as well as cosmic ray physics from 100 TeV to several EeV. The corrected dependence of the mean depth of the EAS maximum $X_{max}$ on the energy was obtained from the data of the Tunka-133 array for 7 years and the TAIGA-HiSCORE array for 2 years. The parameter $\langle\ln A\rangle$, characterizing the mean mass compositon was derived from these results. Here, we propose a novel approach to experimentally and theoretically study the properties of QCD matter under new extreme conditions, namely having an initial temperature over 300~MeV and baryonic charge density over three times the values of the normal nuclear density. According to contemporary theoretical knowledge, such conditions were not accessible during the early Universe evolution and are not accessible now in the known astrophysical phenomena. To achieve these new extreme conditions, we proposed performing high-luminosity experiments at LHC or other colliders by means of scattering the two colliding beams at the nuclei of a solid target that is fixed at their interaction region. Under plausible assumptions, we estimate the reaction rate for the p+C+p and Pb+Pb+Pb reactions and discuss the energy deposition into the target and possible types of fixed targets for such reactions. To simulate the triple nuclear collisions, we employed the well-known UrQMD 3.4 model for the beam center-of-mass collision energies 2.76 TeV. As a result of our modeling, we found that, in the most central and simultaneous triple nuclear collisions, the initial baryonic charge density is approximately three times higher than the one achieved in the ordinary binary nuclear collisions at this energy.

The Tunka-Grande experiment is a scintillation array with about 0.5 sq.km sensitive area at Tunka Valley, Siberia, for measuring charged particles and muons in extensive air showers (EASs). Tunka-Grande is optimized for cosmic ray studies in the energy range 10 PeV to about 1 EeV, where exploring the composition is of fundamental importance for understanding the transition from galactic to extragalactic origin of cosmic rays. This paper attempts to provide a synopsis of the current results of the experiment. A sufficient condition for the spatial collapse in an infinite system of interacting Bose particles is obtained on the basis of the variational principle with the use of trial functions with the Jastrow pair correlation factors. The instability of a hypothetical infinite system of $\alpha$-particles with respect to the spatial collapse is shown under the assumption of the Ali - Bodmer interaction potentials between such Bose particles. We present new results on the thermal production yield of a hypothetical state made of six quarks $uuddss$ assuming its production in heavy-ion collisions at the CERN LHC. A state with this quark content and mass low enough to be stable against decay in timescales of the order of the age of the Universe, has been hypothesized by one of us (G.F.) and has been discussed as a possible dark matter candidate. In this work we address for the first time the thermal production rate that can be expected for this state in heavy-ion collisions at colliders. For this estimate we use a thermal model which has been shown to describe accurately the production of hadrons and nuclei in heavy-ion collisions at LHC energy. This estimate is of great relevance for sexaquark searches at colliders as well as for its consideration as a dark matter candidate and for the composition of neutron stars., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures

A wide-angle Cerenkov array TAIGA-HiSCORE (FOV $\sim$0.6 sr), was originally created as a part of TAIGA installation for high-energy gamma-ray astronomy and cosmic ray physics. Array now consist on nearly 100 optical stations on the area of 1 km$^2$. Due to high accuracy and stability ($\sim$1 ns) of time synchronization of the optical stations the accuracy of EAS arrival direction reconstruction is reached 0.1$^\mathrm{o}$. It was proven that the array can also be used to search for nanosecond events of the optical range. The report discusses the method of searching for optical transients using the HiSCORE array and demonstrates its performance on a real example of detecting signals from an artificial Earth satellite. The search for this short flares in the HiSCORE data of the winter season 2018--2019 is carried out. One candidate for double repeater has been detected, but the estimated probability of random simulation of such a transient by background EAS events is not less than 10%, which does not allow us to say that the detected candidate corresponds to a real astrophysical transient. An upper bound on the frequency of optical spikes with flux density of more than $10^{-4} \mathrm{erg/s/cm}^2$ and a duration of more than 5\,ns is established as $\sim 2 \times 10^{-3}$ events/sr/hour., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, reported at the conference ISCRA-2021, Accepted for publication in Physics of Atomic Nuclei

We suggest to explore an entirely new method to experimentally and theoretically study the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter based on the triple nuclear collisions (TNC). We simulated the TNC using the UrQMD 3.4 model at the beam center-of-mass collision energies $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV and $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76$ TeV. It is found that in the most central and simultaneous TNC the initial baryonic charge density is about 3 times higher than the one achieved in the usual binary nuclear collisions at the same energies. As a consequence, the production of protons and $\Lambda$-hyperons is increased by a factor of 2 and 1.5, respectively. Using the MIT Bag model equation we study the evolution of the central cell in TNC and demonstrate that for the top RHIC energy of collision the baryonic chemical potential is 2-2.5 times larger than the one achieved in the binary nuclear collision at the same type of reaction. Here we develop an original approach to investigate the grand canonical partition function of the multicomponent mixtures of Boltzmann particles with hard-core interaction in finite and even small systems of the volumes above 20 fm$^3$. The derived expressions of the induced surface tension equation of state are analyzed in details. It is shown that the metastable states, which can emerge in the finite systems with realistic interaction, appear at very high pressures at which the hadron resonance gas, most probably, is not applicable at all. It is shown how and under what conditions the obtained results for finite systems can be generalized to include into a formalism the equation for curvature tension. The applicability range of the obtained equations of induced surface and curvature tensions for finite systems is discussed and their close relations to the equations of the morphological thermodynamics are established. The hadron resonance gas model on the basis of the obtained advanced equation of state is worked out. Also, this model is applied to analyze the chemical freeze-out of hadrons and light nuclei with the number of (anti-)baryons not exceeding 4, including the most problematic ratios of hyper-triton and its antiparticle. Their multiplicities were measured by the ALICE Collaboration in the central lead-lead collisions at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} =$ 2.76 TeV., Comment: 24 pages, 3 figures and 1 table

We present a summary of the recent results obtained with the novel hadron resonance gas model with the multicomponent hard-core repulsion which is extended to describe the mixtures of hadrons and light (anti-, hyper-)nuclei. A very accurate description is obtained for the hadronic and the light nuclei data measured by STAR at the collision energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =200$ GeV and by ALICE at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =2.76$ TeV. The most striking result discussed here is that for the most probable chemical freeze-out scenario for the STAR energy the found parameters allow us to reproduce the values of the experimental ratios $S_3$ and $\overline{S}_3$ without fitting., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We investigate the phase transition of Bose-Einstein particles with the hard-core repulsion in the grand canonical ensemble within the Van der Waals approximation. It is shown that the pressure of non-relativistic Bose-Einstein particles is mathematically equivalent to the pressure of simplified version of the statistical multifragmentation model of nuclei with the vanishing surface tension coefficient and the Fisher exponent $\tau_F = \frac{5}{2}$, which for such parameters has the 1-st order phase transition. The found similarity of these equations of state allows us to show that within the present approach the high density phase of Bose-Einstein particles is a classical macro-cluster with vanishing entropy at any temperature which, similarly to the classical hard spheres, is a kind of solid state. To show this we establish new relations which allow us to identically represent the pressure of Fermi-Dirac particles in terms of pressures of Bose-Einstein particles of two sorts., Comment: 8 pages

Here we develop a new strategy to analyze the chemical freeze-out of light (anti)nuclei produced in high energy collisions of heavy atomic nuclei within an advanced version of the hadron resonance gas model. It is based on two different, but complementary approaches to model the hard-core repulsion between the light nuclei and hadrons. The first approach is based on an approximate treatment of the equivalent hard-core radius of a roomy nuclear cluster and pions, while the second approach is rigorously derived here using a self-consistent treatment of classical excluded volumes of light (anti)nuclei and hadrons. By construction, in a hadronic medium dominated by pions, both approaches should give the same results. Employing this strategy to the analysis of hadronic and light (anti)nuclei multiplicities measured by ALICE at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =2.76$ TeV and by STAR at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =200$ GeV, we got rid of the existing ambiguity in the description of light (anti)nuclei data and determined the chemical freeze-out parameters of nuclei with high accuracy and confidence. At ALICE energy the nuclei are frozen prior to the hadrons at the temperature $T = 175.1^{+2.3}_{-3.9}$ MeV, while at STAR energy there is a single freeze-out of hadrons and nuclei at the temperature $T = 167.2 \pm 3.9$ MeV. We argue that the found chemical freeze-out volumes of nuclei can be considered as the volumes of quark-gluon bags that produce the nuclei at the moment of hadronization., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables

From the analysis of light (anti)nuclei multiplicities that were measured recently by the ALICE collaboration in Pb+Pb collisions at the center-of-mass collision energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =2.76$ TeV there arose a highly non-trivial question about the excluded volume of composite particles. Surprisingly, the hadron resonance gas model (HRGM) is able to perfectly describe the light (anti)nuclei multiplicities under various assumptions. Thus, one can consider the (anti)nuclei with a vanishing hard-core radius (as the point-like particles) or with the hard-core radius of proton, but the fit quality is the same for these assumptions. It is clear, however, that such assumptions are unphysical. Hence we obtain a formula for the classical excluded volume of loosely bound light nuclei consisting of A baryons. To implement a new formula into the HRGM we have to modify the induced surface tension concept to treat the hadrons and (anti)nuclei on the same footing. We perform a simultaneous analysis of hadronic and (anti)nuclei multiplicities measured by the ALICE collaboration. The HRGM with the induced surface tension allows us to verify different assumptions on the values of hard-core radii and different scenarios of chemical freeze-out of light (anti)nuclei. It is shown that the unprecedentedly high quality of fit $\chi^2_{tot}/dof \simeq 0.769$ is achieved, if the chemical freeze-out temperature of hadrons is about $T_h=150$ MeV, while the one for all (anti)nuclei is $T_A=174-175.2$ MeV., Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures

TUS (Tracking Ultraviolet Set-up) is the world's first orbital detector of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). It was launched into orbit on 28th April 2016 as a part of the scientific payload of the Lomonosov satellite. The main aim of the mission was to test the technique of measuring the ultraviolet fluorescence and Cherenkov radiation of extensive air showers generated by primary cosmic rays with energies above ~100 EeV in the Earth atmosphere from space. During its operation for 1.5 years, TUS registered almost 80,000 events with a few of them satisfying conditions anticipated for extensive air showers (EASs) initiated by UHECRs. Here we discuss an event registered on 3rd October 2016. The event was measured in perfect observation conditions as an ultraviolet track in the nocturnal atmosphere of the Earth, with the kinematics and the light curve similar to those expected from an EAS. A reconstruction of parameters of a primary particle gave the zenith angle around 44$^\circ$ but an extreme energy not compatible with the cosmic ray energy spectrum obtained with ground-based experiments. We discuss in details all conditions of registering the event, explain the reconstruction procedure and its limitations and comment on possible sources of the signal, both of anthropogenic and astrophysical origin. We believe this detection represents a significant milestone in the space-based observation of UHECRs because it proves the capability of an orbital telescope to detect light signals with the apparent motion and light shape similar to what are expected from EASs. The multiplicities of light (anti)nuclei were measured recently by the ALICE collaboration in Pb+Pb collisions at the center-of-mass collision energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =2.76$ TeV. Surprisingly, the hadron resonance gas model is able to perfectly describe their multiplicities under various assumptions. For instance, one can consider the (anti)nuclei with a vanishing hard-core radius (as the point-like particles) or with the hard-core radius of proton, but the fit quality is the same for these assumptions. In this paper we assume the hard-core radius of nuclei consisting of $A$ baryons or antibaryons to follow the simple law $R(A) = R_b (A)^\frac{1}{3}$, where $R_b$ is the hard-core radius of nucleon. To implement such a relation into the hadron resonance gas model we employ the induced surface tension concept and analyze the hadronic and (anti)nuclei multiplicities measured by the ALICE collaboration. The hadron resonance gas model with the induced surface tension allows us to verify different scenarios of chemical freeze-out of (anti)nuclei. It is shown that the most successful description of hadrons can be achieved at the chemical freeze-out temperature $T_h=150$ MeV, while the one for all (anti)nuclei is $T_A=168.5$ MeV. The chemical freeze-out irregularities found with the most advanced hadron resonance gas model and possible signals of two QCD phase transitions are discussed. In this work we discuss a novel approach to model the hadronic and nuclear matter equations of state using the induced surface tension concept. Since the obtained equations of state, classical and quantum, are among the most successful ones in describing the properties of low density phases of strongly interacting matter, they set strong restrictions on the possible value of the hard-core radius of nucleons. Therefore, we perform a detailed analysis of its value which follows from hadronic and nuclear matter properties and find the most trustworthy range of its values: the hard-core radius of nucleons is 0.30--0.36 fm. A comparison with the phenomenology of neutron stars implies that the hard-core radius of nucleons has to be temperature and density dependent., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, references added, typos corrected

A system of first-order differential equations for a particle with nonzero mass and spin $S = 1$ is constructed. As distinct from the Proca-Duffin-Kemmer (PDK) equations, the system has the form of the dynamical equation $i\hbar\partial_t\hat{\Psi}=\hat{\mathrm{H}}\hat{\Psi}$ (with constraints) with a Hamiltonian linear in momentum. The six-component wave function yields the positive-definite probability density $\hat{\Psi}^{\dagger}\hat{\Psi}\geq 0$. The system of equations has much in common with the Dirac and Maxwell equations.

The spatial structure of $^{14}$N nucleus is studied within a five-particle model (three $\alpha$-particles plus two nucleons). Using the variational approach with Gaussian bases, the ground-state energy and wave function are calculated for this five-particle system. Two spatial configurations in the ground-state wave function are revealed. TUS (Track Ultraviolet Setup) is the first space experiment aimed to check the possibility of registering extreme energy cosmic rays (EECRs) at E>50 EeV by measuring the fluorescence signal of extensive air showers in the atmosphere. The detector operates as a part of the scientific payload of the Lomonosov satellite for more than a year. The origin and nature of extreme energy cosmic rays (EECRs), which have energies above the 50 EeV, the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) energy limit, is one of the most interesting and complicated problems in modern cosmic-ray physics. Existing ground-based detectors have helped to obtain remarkable results in studying cosmic rays before and after the GZK limit, but have also produced some contradictions in our understanding of cosmic ray mass composition. Moreover, each of these detectors covers only a part of the celestial sphere, which poses problems for studying the arrival directions of EECRs and identifying their sources. As a new generation of EECR space detectors, TUS (Tracking Ultraviolet Set-up), KLYPVE and JEM-EUSO, are intended to study the most energetic cosmic-ray particles, providing larger, uniform exposures of the entire celestial sphere. The TUS detector, launched on board the Lomonosov satellite on April 28, 2016, from Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia, is the first of these. It employs a single-mirror optical system and a photomultiplier tube matrix as a photo-detector and will test the fluorescent method of measuring EECRs from space. Utilizing the Earth's atmosphere as a huge calorimeter, it is expected to detect EECRs with energies above 100 EeV. It will also be able to register slower atmospheric transient events: atmospheric fluorescence in electrical discharges of various types including precipitating electrons escaping the magnetosphere and from the radiation of meteors passing through the atmosphere. TUS (Tracking Ultraviolet Set-up), the first orbital detector of extreme energy cosmic rays (EECRs), those with energies above 50 EeV, was launched into orbit on April 28, 2016, as a part of the Lomonosov satellite scientific payload. The main aim of the mission is to test a technique of registering fluorescent and Cherenkov radiation of extensive air showers generated by EECRs in the atmosphere with a space telescope. We present preliminary results of its operation in a mode dedicated to registering extensive air showers in the period from August 16, 2016, to November 4, 2016. No EECRs have been conclusively identified in the data yet, but the diversity of ultraviolet emission in the atmosphere was found to be unexpectedly rich. We discuss typical examples of data obtained with TUS and their possible origin. The data is important for obtaining more accurate estimates of the nocturnal ultraviolet glow of the atmosphere, necessary for successful development of more advanced orbital EECR detectors including those of the KLYPVE (K-EUSO) and JEM-EUSO missions., Comment: 18 pages; v2: references fixed; v3: minor changes to address referee's comments

The structure of mirror $^{14}$C and $^{14}$O nuclei has been studied in the framework of the five-particle model (three $\alpha$-particles and two nucleons). Interaction potentials are proposed, which allowed the energy and radius of $^{14}$C nucleus, as well as the energy of $^{14}$O one, to agree with experimental data. On the basis of the variational approach with the use of Gaussian bases, the energies and wave functions for five-particle systems under consideration are calculated. The charge radius of $^{14}$O nucleus, as well as the charge density distributions and the form factors for both nuclei, are predicted.

A complete account of correlations has been shown to make $\delta$-like repulsive interaction potentials inefficient for any $N$-particle quantum system in the $D$-dimensional space with $D\geq2$.

On April 28, 2016, the Lomonosov satellite, equipped with a number of scientific instruments, was launched into orbit. Here we present briefly some of the results obtained with the first orbital telescope of extreme energy cosmic rays TUS and by a group of detectors aimed at multi-messenger observations of gamma-ray bursts., Comment: XXV ECRS 2016 Proceedings - eConf C16-09-04.3

This work is a methodical study of another option of the hybrid method originally aimed at gamma/hadron separation in the TAIGA experiment. In the present paper this technique was performed to distinguish between different mass groups of cosmic rays in the energy range 200 TeV - 500 TeV. The study was based on simulation data of TAIGA prototype and included analysis of geometrical form of images produced by different nuclei in the IACT simulation as well as shower core parameters reconstructed using timing array simulation. Within a five-particle model (three $\alpha$-particles plus two nucleons), the structure functions of mirror nuclei $^{14}$C and $^{14}$O are studied. Using the variational approach with Gaussian bases, the energies and wave functions are calculated for these five-particle systems. Two spatial configurations in the ground-state wave function are revealed. The r.m.s. charge radius of $^{14}$O nucleus is found to be $2.415\pm0.005$ fm. The charge density distributions and the form factors of both nuclei are predicted. The pair correlation functions are analyzed, and the r.m.s. relative distances are calculated. The momentum distributions of particles are found.
