The aim of this study was to conduct a literature review to assess the importance of the definition of the periodontal biotype in orthodontic and implants treatments. It was observed that the differences in periodontal characteristics are similar for both dentate patients and for patients with implants, then this information should be important to the definition of orthodontic and implants treatments to avoid functional and aesthetic inconvenience. And the definition of periodontal biotype is critical to the predictability of these treatments. O objetivo do presente estudo foi realizar uma revisão de literatura para avaliar a importância da definição do biótipo periodontal nos tratamentos ortodônticos e de implantes. Observou-se que as diferenças das características periodontais são semelhantes tanto para pacientes dentados quanto para portadores de implantes, então essa informação deve ser importante para a definição do tratamento ortodôntico e com implantes para evitar transtornos funcionais e estéticos. A definição do biótipo perio-dontal é fundamental para a previsibilidade desses tratamentos.

A bibliographic review was done about the use of azitromicin on the treatment of periodontitis considering questions such as: Could this antibiotic increase the root planning effect, limit the adverse effects, or even be a substitute in some cases? The azitromicin is being used in some cases in association with scaling and root planning in the treatment of aggressive periodontitis, because of its effectiveness on fighting pathogenic bacteria. But few studies offer reliable content acknowledging the success of this new therapy. Thus, the treatment of aggressive periodontitis continues to be scaling and root planning. Foi feita uma revisão bibliográfica sobre o uso da azitromicina em Periodontia considerando algumas questões como: Pode este antibiótico aumentar o efeito da raspagem radicular, limitar seus efeitos adversos ou pode até mesmo ser um substituto em alguns casos? A azitromicina vem sendo associada, em alguns casos, à raspagem e ao alisamento radicular no tratamento de doenças periodontais agressivas, por ser eficaz no combate a bactérias periodontopatogênicas. No entanto, faltam estudos com conteúdo confiável para se confirmar o sucesso dessa nova terapia. Sendo assim, o tratamento principal para a periodontite agressiva continua sendo a raspagem e o alisamento radicular.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi verificar o grau de conhecimento médico sobre medicina periodontal e verificar a existência de algum protocolo de controle de infecção da cavidade oral em pacientes internados em hospitais. Para tal, 110 médicos cardiologistas e intensivistas lotados em cinco hospitais no município do Rio de Janeiro foram entrevistados. Dentre os indivíduos, 75,4% afirmaram ter conhecimento sobre o termo medicina periodontal; entretanto, apenas 30% declararam já ter lido algo a respeito. Apenas 2,7% dos médicos possuem o hábito de coletar informações sobre a história odontológica de seus pacientes e 58,2% afirmaram que essa conduta é condicional ao quadro apresentado pelo paciente. Com base nos dados obtidos, pode-se concluir que o conhecimento sobre medicina periodontal e, consequentemente, sobre a importância do controle do biofilme oral na manutenção da saúde sistêmica, apresenta-se pouco difundido entre a classe médica. Verificou-se não haver setor ou pessoa responsável pelo controle de infecção oral dentro dos hospitais avaliados e, consequentemente, a não existência de qualquer protocolo, eficaz ou não, de controle de infecção oral nessas unidades. This paper aims to find the current level of periodontal med-care knowledge, as well as the possible existence of some oral infection control protocol regarding hospitalized patients. Our sample gathered 110 cardiologists and intensive care units doctors selected from medical teams of five Rio de Janeiro hospitals. Preliminary numbers: 75.4% said to have heard something about Periodontal Medicine, although only 30% out of this group admitted to have read something concerning such subject. On the other side, only 2.7% of the sample informed to do consistent information searching along their patients anamnese, while 58.2% out of this group admitted such procedure conditional to the patient's general state at the due moment. Through such numbers, we tend to come up to the conclusion that, be it either through direct or indirect Periodontal Medicine technical information (and consequently with regards to the absolut importance of preservation and control of oral biofilm and its impact on one's systemic health), the matter has been dimly spread among medical groups. The search also revealed the probability that Rio de Janeiro hospitals lack either units or agents designed for prevention and control of oral infection; consequently, such organizations do not have any kind of protocols, reliable or not, concerned to oral infections.

However, the results of technology-enhanced learning effectiveness in periodontics education are controversial. Therefore, this present work aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of technology-enhanced learning to improve educational outcomes in the periodontics field compared to traditional learning methods. A systematic review was performed comprising randomized controlled trials and crossover studies that were related to periodontics education from the following databases: MedLine, PsycINFO, Eric, Scopus, EMBASE, and Web of Science. Two authors independently performed study selection, data extraction, and assessed risk of bias. Kirkpatrick’s four-level evaluation model was used to evaluate educational outcomes. From 1642 studies, after applying inclusion criteria, seven studies remained for analysis. As a result of educational outcomes, on level 1 (Reaction), undergraduate dental students reported positive attitudes related to technology-enhanced learning. On level 2 (Learning), two studies found that the exclusive use of technology-enhanced learning improved knowledge gain compared to traditional learning methods; three other studies did not find any difference between technology-enhanced learning and traditional learning methods; one found that traditional learning methods presented superior results and one found that the combination between technology-enhanced learning and traditional methods improved knowledge gain compared to traditional learning methods. On level 3 (Behaviour), only three studies evaluated student’s performance and one found that TEL application improved students’ performance. On level 4 (Results), five studies suggested that the implementation of technology-enhanced learning would improve educational outcomes in periodontics education if combined with traditional learning methods. The findings showed that the exclusive use of technology-enhanced learning does not significantly improve periodontics educational outcomes when compared to traditional learning methods. However, the combination of technology-enhanced learning and traditional learning methods can be the key to improving periodontics education A tecnologia educacional tem sido sugerida como uma abordagem pedagógica adequada no ensino odontológico. Entretanto, resultados referentes à sua eficácia na educação em periodontia são controversos. O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a eficácia da tecnologia educacional na melhora dos resultados educacionais em periodontia quando comparada aos métodos de ensino tradicional. Uma revisão sistemática foi realizada composta por estudos controlados randomizados e crossover na área de educação em periodontia nas seguintes bases de dados: MedLine, PsycINFO, Eric, Scopus, EMBASE, e Web of Science. Dois autores selecionaram os estudos, extraíram os dados e avaliaram os riscos de viés de maneira independente. O modelo Kirkpatrick foi utilizado para avaliar os resultados educacionais. Após a aplicação dos critérios de inclusão, dos 1642 estudos encontrados, sete foram incluídos. No nível 1 (reação), os alunos de graduação reportaram atitudes positivas ao uso da tecnologia educacional. No nível 2 (aprendizagem), dois estudos demonstraram que o uso exclusivo da tecnologia educacional melhorou ganho de conhecimento quando comparado a métodos de ensino tradicional; três outros estudos não encontraram diferença entre a aplicação da tecnologia educacional e os métodos tradicionais; um estudo concluiu que o uso de métodos tradicionais apresentou um resultado melhor e um estudo mostrou que a combinação entre o uso da tecnologia educacional e de métodos tradicionais proporcionou melhora no ganho de conhecimento quando comparado ao uso exclusivo de métodos tradicionais de ensino. No nível 3 (comportamento), apenas três estudos avaliaram performance dos alunos e um demonstrou que a tecnologia educacional melhorou a performance. Sixteen patients, mean age 47.7 years (SD = 7.0), underwent root-graft surgery with graft of subepithelial connective tissue associated or not with enamel-derived matrix. The study followed the split-mouth model and randomized to the sides test and control. The following clinical parameters were analyzed on the day of surgery and 6 months after the surgical procedure: height of the recession (AR), width of keratinized tissue (LFG), width of the recession (LR), probing depth (PS), clinical attachment level (NIC) and gingival thickness (EG). In addition to the clinical analysis, the following inflammatory markers were evaluated: IL-1β, IL-1RA, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-7, IL-8, IL-9, IL IL-13, IL-15, IL-17, EOTAXIN, FGF, GCSF, GMCSF, IFN-γ, IP-10, MCP-1, MIP-1α, PDGF-bb, MIP-1β, RANTES, TNF-α and VEGF in the gingival crevicular fluid at baseline and at 7 and 14 postoperative days. Postoperative pain analysis and aesthetic analysis were performed. The results showed that the side treated with EMD resulted in a significantly higher percentage of root coverage (p = 0.03) when compared to the control side. Seventy-five percent of the sites had complete root coverage on the test side and 43.8% on the control side in 6 months. The EMD did not bring significant results to increase gingival thickness and gain of width keratinized tissue. Immunological analyzes showed an increase in VEGF (p = 0.03) and PDGF (p = 0.03) at 14 days postoperatively with EMD and high expression of inflammatory mediators such as IL-1β (p = 0.04) (P = 0.05), MIP-1α (p = 0.05), TNF-α (p = 0.02, p = 0.02) 02, p = 0.05) with 7 postoperative days, in both groups, test and control, respectively. There was no difference between the groups in the evaluation of postoperative pain and a significant difference between the evaluation of the final aesthetic of the patient and the one performed by a calibrated and experienced professional was demonstrated. Thus, we concluded that EMD appears to have a clinical and immunological impact in root coverage surgeries, with significantly greater percentage of root coverage and complete root coverage, as well as a significantly higher increase in the release of VEGF and PDGF-bb with 14 days of postoperative, suggesting to be an important element for a better wound healing. O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar o impacto clínico e imunológico da matriz derivada de esmalte (EMD) na cicatrização periodontal, após a realização de cirurgias de recobrimento radicular. Dezesseis pacientes, com média de idade de 47,7 anos (DP=7,0), foram submetidos à cirurgia de recobrimento radicular com enxerto de tecido conjuntivo subepitelial associado ou não à matriz derivada de esmalte. O estudo seguiu o modelo de boca dividida e randomizado para os lados teste e controle. Os seguintes parâmetros clínicos foram analisados no dia da cirurgia e 6 meses após o procedimento cirúrgico: altura da recessão (AR), largura da faixa de gengiva queratinizada (LFG), largura da recessão (LR), profundidade de sondagem (PS), nível de inserção clínica (NIC) e espessura gengival (EG). Além da análise clínica, foram realizadas avaliações dos seguintes marcadores inflamatórios: IL-1β, IL -1RA, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-7, IL-8, IL-9, IL-10, IL12, IL-13, IL-15, IL-17, EOTAXIN, FGF, G-CSF, GM-CSF, IFN-γ, IP-10, MCP-1, MIP 1α, PDGF-bb, MIP 1β, RANTES, TNF-α e VEGF, no fluido gengival no dia da cirurgia e com 7 e 14 dias de pós-operatório. Análise da dor pós-operatória e a análise estética também foram realizadas. Os resultados demonstraram que o lado tratado com EMD resultou em percentual de cobertura radicular (p=0,03) significantemente maior quando comparado com o lado controle. Setenta e cinco por cento dos sítios apresentaram cobertura radicular completa no lado teste e 43,8% no controle, em 6 meses. O EMD não trouxe resultados significantes para aumento de espessura gengival e ganho de faixa de tecido queratinizado. As análises imunológicas mostraram um aumento de VEGF (p=0,03) e PDGF (p=0,03) aos 14 dias de pós-operatório com o EMD e altas expressões de mediadores inflamatórios como IL-1β (p=0,04; p=0,03), IL-6 (p=0,05; p=0,05), TNF-α (p=0,02; p=0,02), MIP-1α (p=0,02; p=0,05) com 7 dias de pós-operatório, em ambos os grupos, teste e controle, respectivamente. Não houve diferença entre os grupos na avaliação da dor pós-operatória e foi demonstrada uma diferença significante entre a avaliação da estética final do paciente daquela realizada por um profissional calibrado e experiente. Assim sendo, concluímos que o EMD parece ter impacto clínico e imunológico, nas cirurgias de recobrimento de raízes, com percentuais significantemente maiores de cobertura radicular e completa cobertura radicular assim como aumento significantemente maior na liberação de VEGF e PDGF-bb com 14 dias de pós-operatório, sugerindo ser um importante elemento para uma melhor cicatrização.

This method should be performed as last resort, to carry out for missing persons, when there is no other primary identification method avaliable. The purpose of this study was to introduce a new computerized method with hermite radial basis function (HRBF) for facial approximation using dry skull and computed tomography (CT). The same was also evaluated as a result of the recognition. Firstly, a scan of a dry unidentified skull image was used in order to assess if the amount of points would be sufficient for HRBF methodology and subsequent reconstruction of the facial surface. In second, three CT scans of living individuals were used to evaluate the similarity achieved between the real face scanned and facial approximations. An association of different facial structures reconstruction techniques already published for the same region of the face was applied for the same skull. Moreover, some situations from developed facial approximations were simulated, as recognition by a relative or parent, on a face pool-test. Results from the study showed that the purposed methodology can be used for facial approximation. At the three cases a correct approximation identification as one of a few possible matches to the missing person happened. In two of them, the results were consistently better at identifying the correct approximation. In conclusion, the proposed methodology is fast, objective and reaches visual identification. It is possible to perform multiple versions of the same skull, changing the selected data into the system, which maximizes the chances of establishing recognition of the target face. It was also observed that the technique does not need artistic interpretation. A aproximação fisionômica é o método que busca, a partir do crânio, simular a fotografia de um indivíduo quando em vida. Deve ser empregada como último recurso, na busca de desaparecidos, quando não houver possibilidade de aplicação de um método válido de identificação. O objetivo deste estudo foi obter a aproximação fisionômica, a partir de um crânio seco e de tomografia computadorizada multislice de indivíduos vivos, através da função de base radial hermitiana (FBRH). Constituiu-se também em avaliar o resultado da mesma quanto ao reconhecimento. Na primeira etapa do estudo, foi utilizada a imagem escaneada de um crânio seco, de origem desconhecida, com o intuito de avaliar se a quantidade de pontos obtidos seria suficiente para aplicação da FBRH e consequente reconstrução da superfície facial. Na segunda fase, foram utilizadas três tomografias de indivíduos vivos, para análise da semelhança alcançada entre a face escaneada e as aproximações faciais. Nesta etapa, foi aplicada uma associação de diferentes metodologias já publicadas, para reconstrução de uma mesma região da face, a partir de um mesmo crânio. Na última etapa, foram simuladas situações de reconhecimento com familiares e amigos dos indivíduos doadores das tomografias. Observou-se que a metodologia de FBRH pode ser empregada em aproximação fisionômica. Houve reconhecimento positivo nos três sujeitos estudados, sendo que, em dois deles, os resultados foram ainda mais significativos. Desta forma, conclui-se que a metodologia é rápida, objetiva e proporciona o reconhecimento. Esta permite a criação de múltiplas versões de aproximações fisionômicas a partir do mesmo crânio, o que amplia as possibilidades de reconhecimento. Observou-se ainda que a técnica não exige habilidade artística do profissional.

A search for randomized controlled trials published between 1995 and 2013 was performed in the MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, BVS, CLINICALTRIALS.GOV, abstracts from the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) databases and manual search for possible studies to be included. Five hundred and forty-one studies were located, and 12 selected for evaluation of eligibility and 5 studies included for qualitative analysis. After application of an instrument for analysis of associated bias, it was found a low risk of bias associated with the majority of the included studies. In the results of the included studies it was possible to observe that although successful, the association of different biomaterials with minimally invasive techniques did not bring an additional benefit to the assessed clinical parameters. O objetivo da presente dissertação foi realizar uma revisão sistemática para investigar os efeitos do uso de biomateriais no tratamento de defeitos ósseos periodontais por meio de abordagens cirúrgicas minimamente invasivas sobre os parâmetros clínicos periodontais. Foi realizada uma busca por ensaios randomizados controlados publicados entre os anos de 1995 e 2013 nas bases MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, BVS, CLINICALTRIALS.gov, abstracts da International Association for Dental Research (IADR) e busca manual por possíveis estudos a serem incluídos. Foram localizados 541 estudos, sendo 12 selecionados para avaliação da elegibilidade e 5 estudos incluídos para análise qualitativa. Após aplicação de um instrumento para análise do viés associado, demonstrou-se um baixo risco de viés associado à maioria dos estudos incluídos. Nos resultados dos estudos incluídos foi possível observar que embora bem-sucedida, a associação de diferentes biomateriais às técnicas minimamente invasivas não trouxe benefício adicional aos parâmetros clínicos avaliados.

Periodontal disease (PD) combines a group of chronic inflammatory conditions induced by microorganisms that leads to gingival inflammation, periodontal tissue destruction and alveolar bone loss. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a term used to describe a group of metabolic disorders associated to glucose intolerance and inappropriate carbohydrate metabolism. Once PDs could act in a similar way to other systemic infectious states increasing diabetes severity, a possible correlation between both has been considerate around the world. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been studied in relation to several diseases. In periodontitis, it is believed to be involved in an exacerbated inflammatory response due to bacterial challenge, modifying the host susceptibility. In this study, the prevalence of periodontal disease was evaluated in type I diabetes patients (TIDM). Further on, the SNP in the promoter region of the TNFA gene (-1031T>C) was analyzed and its importance to destructive periodontal disease was considered. The test group was formed by type I diabetic patients (TDG, n=113) and the control group was composed by non-diabetic patients (ND, n=73). For the genetic polymorphism analysis a subgroup was taken from the test group (DG, n=58) and compared to the ND group. The following clinical and demographic parameters were assessed: percentage of sites with periodontal pocket depth (PPD)  6.0mm; gingival index (GI); radiographic bone loss (RBL); smoking habits; diabetes duration; age; bone mass index (BMI); number of admissions and number of teeth. Blood samples and oral epithelial cells were collected from 58 patients of the test group and 73 controls. After genomic DNA extraction and amplification of the genomic region of interest by PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), the TNFA 1031T>C polymorphism was analyzed by BbsI RFLP (Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism). Analysis of the digestion products were performed by 8% polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The statistical analysis of the genotypes and allelic frequencies along with the clinical and epidemiological data between the two groups were done through the Mann-Whitney and Chi-square tests. The study groups are in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. In the ND group, the following genotypic frequencies were found: 78.1% (T/T); 20.5% (T/C) e 1.4% (C/C), while for the D group, they were: 42.4% (T/T); 37.3% (T/C) e 20.3% (C/C). The frequencies of T allele in the D and ND groups were 0.610 and 0.883, respectively. It was not possible to find any correlation between the -1031 T>C promoter polymorphism of the TNFA gene and the presence of periodontitis in type I diabetic patients. Para as análises dos polimorfismos genéticos, um subgrupo foi retirado do grupo teste (DG, n=58) e comparado ao grupo ND. Os seguintes parâmetros clínicos e demográficos foram avaliados: percentual de sítios com profundidade de bolsa  6,0 mm (%PBS6,0 mm); índice gengival (IG); perda óssea radiográfica (POR); fumo; duração do diabetes ; idade; índice de massa corpórea (IMC), n de internações e n de dentes presentes. Amostras de sangue e/ou esfregaço bucal foram colhidas de 58 pacientes do grupo teste e de 73 controles. Após a extração do DNA genômico e amplificação da região genômica de interesse por PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), o polimorfismo TNFA 1031T>C foi analisado por BbsI RFLP (Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism). A análise dos produtos de digestão foi feita por eletroforese em gel de poliacrilamida 8%. A análise estatística das freqüências alélica e genotípica juntamente com os dados clínicos e epidemiológicos entre os 2 grupos foi feita através do teste do Mann-Whitney e do Qui-quadrado. Os grupos de estudo obedecem ao princípio de Hardy-Weinberg. No grupo ND, as seguintes freqüências genotípicas foram encontradas: 78,1% (T/T); 20,5% (T/C) e 1,4% (C/C) enquanto no grupo D foram: 42,4%(T/T); 37,3% (T/C) e 20,3% (C/C). A frequência do alelo T no grupo diabético (D) foi de 0,610 ao passo que no grupo ND foi de 0,883. Methods: we studied 30 young, male and adult Wistar albino rats, 15 diabetics induced by streptozotocin, and 15 non diabetics. The animals were divided in 6 groups: NDC(non diabetic control), NDIP(non diabetic immediately peroxide), ND7DP(non diabetic 7 days peroxide), DC(diabetic control), DIP(diabetic immediately peroxide), D7DP(diabetic 7 days peroxide). Groups NDC and DC had no treatment. In groups NDIP e DIP were applied the 16% carbamide peroxide gel (for 2 hours a day) and the animals were sacrificed in the seventh day of the experimentation. In groups ND7DP e D7DP were applied the 16% carbamide peroxide gel (for 2 hours a day) and the animals were sacrificed 7 days after (repair). After the sacrifice, the material from the jugal mucosa of the animals was removed for study with light microscope, stereology and immunohistochemistry for smooth muscle alfa-actin (SMAA, vessel detection). Results: all the specimens treated with streptozotocin became diabetics. For determination of the density of connective tissue (Vv[tc]), of the density of vessel volume (Vv[vasos]) and the density of mast cells (QA[mast]) was used the program Image Pro Plus Version 5.0.5 2004 Media Cybernetics Inc. The Vv[tc] were 23% higher in group DC than the group NDC . The Vv[vasos] was 125% higher in group DC than the group NDC, and 108% higher in group DP7D than the group NDP7D, all data with statistically significant difference. The (QA[mast]) was higher in diabetic groups but without statistically significant difference. Conclusion: The 16% of carbamide peroxide induces the formation of fibrosis, migration of mast cells and vessel proliferation as a tissue reaction in the cellular subcutaneous tissue of the oral mucosa of diabetics and non diabetics rats. Objetivo: avaliar os efeitos do peróxido de carbamida a 16% aplicado na mucosa oral de ratos diabéticos e não diabéticos. Métodos:foram utilizados trinta ratos albinos sendo 15 diabéticos induzidos por estreptozotocina e 15 normais, machos, adultos jovens, variedade Wistar. Os animais foram dividos em 6 grupos: NDC(não diabético controle), NDIP(não diabético imediato peróxido), ND7DP(não diabético 7 dias peróxido), DC(diabético controle), DIP(diabético imediato peróxido), D7DP(diabético 7 dias peróxido). Os grupos NDC e DC não receberam qualquer tratamento. Nos grupos NDIP e DIP foi aplicado o gel de peróxido de carbamida a 16% por 7dias (2 horas/dia) e os animais foram sacrificados no sétimo dia do experimento. Nos grupos ND7DP e D7DP foi aplicado o gel de peróxido de carbamida a 16% por 7 dias (2 horas dia) e os animais foram sacrificados 7 dias após (reparo). Após o sacrifício dos animais, a região mentual foi retirada cirurgicamente e preparada para estudo ao microscópio de luz com estereologia e imunohistoquímica para α-actina de músculo liso (ACML, detecção de vasos). Resultados: todos os animais tratados com estreptozotocina tornaram-se diabéticos. A determinação da densidade de volume de tecido conjuntivo (Vv[tc]), da densidade de volume de vasos (Vv[vasos]) e da densidade de mastócitos na área-teste (QA[mast]) foram realizadas através do programa Image Pro Plus Version 5.0.5 2004 Media Cybernetics Inc. O Vv[tc] se apresentou 23% maior no grupo DC, em relação ao grupo NDC. A Vv[vasos] foi 125% maior no grupo DC em relação ao grupo NDC, e 108% maior no grupo DP7D em relação ao grupo NDP7D, todos com diferença estatística significante. A (QA[mast]) se apresentou maior nos grupos diabéticos, porém sem diferença estatística significante. Conclusão: O peróxido de carbamida a 16% induz a formação de fibrose, migração de mastócitos e proliferação de vasos, como reação tecidual no tecido celular subcutâneo, na região vestíbulo-mentual inferior de ratos diabéticos e não diabéticos.

No. of bitstreams: 1 TESE_FINAL_ESIO_DE_OLIVIEIRA_VIEIRA.pdf: 1032115 bytes, checksum: 69921b7c595d2f8be452fcb6e923afef (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-11-24 The aim of the present study was to clinically evaluate the subepithelial connective tissue graft (CTG), Alloderm (ALL) and coronally advanced flap (CAF) in the treatment of gingival recessions Class I of Miller. 30 patients were included in the study, and were divided in 3 groups of 10 patients. 10 patients with mean age of 38.7 (± 10,3) years were treated with CAF, including 18 defects. 10 patients with mean age of 40.2(± 9.9) years were treated with CTG, including 23 defects, while 10 patients with mean age of 37.7(±11.2) were treated with ALL, including 18 gingival recessions. The patients should not have caries over the denuded root surface, the cementoename junction should visible and easily identified, should not have received any surgical treatment during the last 24 months, and not have periodontal pockets or endodontic treatment at the tested teeth. The following measurements were performed: Plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), probing pocket depth (PPD), probing attachment level (PAL), width of keratinized gingiva (KG), depth of gingival recession (GR) and position of the mucogingival junction (MGJ). PI, GI, PPD, PAL, KG, GR, MGJ were made with a calibrated periodontal probe on days 0, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 180. PPD and PAL were not measured on day 30. Subjective evaluations were performed by the patient and the dentist on day 180.
