Abstract Background Aphis gossypii (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is a worldwide polyphagous phloem-feeding agricultural pest, and it can produce offspring by sexual or asexual reproduction. Compared with dozens of generations by parthenogenesis, sexual reproduction is performed in only one generation within one year, and little is known about the sexual reproduction of A. gossypii. In this study, sexual females of A. gossypii were successfully obtained through a previously established induction platform, and the morphological characteristics, developmental dynamics, and temporal gene expression were examined. Subsequently, signaling pathways potentially involved in regulating the growth, development, and reproduction of sexual females were investigated. Results The morphological observation showed that from the 1st instar nymph to adult, sexual females exhibited a gradually deepened body color, an enlarged body size, longer antennae with a blackened end, and obviously protruding cauda (in adulthood). The anatomy found that the ovaries of sexual females developed rapidly from the 2nd instar nymph, and the embedded oocytes matured in adulthood. In addition, time-course transcriptome analysis revealed that gene expression profiles across the development of sexual females fell into 9 clusters with distinct patterns, in which gene expression levels in clusters 1, 5, and 8 peaked at the 2nd instar nymphal stage with the largest number of up-regulated genes, suggesting that the 2nd instar nymph was an important ovary development period. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis revealed that a large number of genes in the sexual female adult were enriched in the TGF-beta signaling pathway and Forkhead box O (FoxO) signaling pathway, highlighting their important role in sexual female adult development and reproduction. Conclusion The morphological changes of the sexual female at each developmental stage were revealed for the first time. In addition, time-course transcriptomic analyses suggest genes enriched in the TGF-beta signaling pathway and FoxO signaling pathway probably contribute to regulating the development and oocyte maturation of sexual females. Overall, these findings will facilitate the regulating mechanism research in the growth and development of sexual females by providing candidate genes.

Abstract Cotton thrip, Thrips tabaci is a major polyphagous pest widely distributed on a variety of crops around the world, causing huge economic losses to agricultural production. Due to its biological and genomic characteristics, this pest can reproduce quickly and develop resistance to various pesticides in a very short time. However, the lack of high-quality reference genomes has hindered deeper gene function exploration and slows down the development of new management strategies. Here, we assembled a high-quality genome of T. tabaci at the chromosome level for the first time by using Illumina, PacBio long reads, and Hi-C technologies. The 329.59 Mb genome was obtained from 320 contigs, with a contig N50 of 1.53 Mb, and 94.21% of the assembly was anchored to 18 chromosomes. In total, 17,816 protein-coding genes were annotated, and 96.78% of BUSCO genes were fully represented. In conclusion, this high-quality genome provides a valuable genetic basis for our understanding of the biology of T. tabaci and contributes to the development of management strategies for cotton thrip.

Abstract Episyrphus balteatus can provide dual ecosystem services including pest control and pollination, which the larvae are excellent predators of aphid pest whereas adults are efficient pollinator. In this study, we assembled a high-quality genome of E. balteatus from northern China geographical population at the chromosome level by using Illumina, PacBio long reads, and Hi-C technologies. The 467.42 Mb genome was obtained from 723 contigs, with a contig N50 of 9.16 Mb and Scaffold N50 of 118.85 Mb, and 90.25% (431.75 Mb) of the assembly was anchored to 4 pseudo-autosomes and one pseudo-heterosome. In total, 14,848 protein-coding genes were annotated, and 95.14% of genes were fully represented in NR, GO, KEGG databases. Besides, we also obtained the mitochondrial genome of E. balteatus of 16, 837 bp in length with 37 typical mitochondrial genes. Overall, this high-quality genome is valuable for evolutionary and genetic studies of E. balteatus and other Syrphidae hoverfly species.

Xylem plasticity is important for trees to coordinate hydraulic efficiency and safety under changing soil water availability. However, the physiological and transcriptional regulations of cambium on xylem plasticity are not well understood. In this study, mulberry saplings of drought-resistant Wubu and drought-susceptible Zhongshen1 were subjected to moderate or severe drought stresses for 21 days and subsequently rewatered for 12 days. The anatomical, physiological and transcriptional responses in wood and cambium were analyzed. Most parameters were not affected significantly under moderate drought for both cultivars. Severe drought led to decreased vessel lumen diameter and increased vessel frequency, increased starch and hemicellulose in wood of both cultivars. Notably, increased soluble sugars and lignin were detected only in wood of Wubu. In cambial zone, levels of starch, glucose, fructose, mannose and cytokinin were decreased in both cultivars, whereas soluble sugars were increased in Wubu but deceased in Zhongshen1. RNA-sequencing identified 1824 and 2471 differentially expressed genes in Wubu and Zhongshen1 under severe drought, respectively. These responses were partially recovered after rewatering. Weighted gene correlation network analysis identified modules of co-expressed genes correlated with the anatomical and physiological traits of wood and cambium, with the turquoise and green modules most strongly correlated with traits under drought or rewatering. These modules were enriched in gene ontology terms related to cell division, cytoskeleton organization, cell wall modification, dark respiration, vesicle transport and protein metabolism. Detailed gene expression patterns indicate that reprogramming of cambium activity was relatively similar in both cultivars, but at different scales. These findings provide important insights into the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying xylem plasticity based on cambium and offer valuable references for breeding drought-resistant mulberry and other woody species in light of future drier climate scenarios.

Micro light-emitting diode (Micro-LED) is a highly promising technology in the field of new displays, with the mass transfer process involved in its manufacturing process widely regarded as a major barrier to their further development. This study adopts laser transfer technology as the primary solution, using ablation-type transfer release materials that improve chip utilization rates over blister-type release materials. In addition, measurement of the laser transfer parameters, inspection, and laser repair technology are combined to achieve a transfer yield of about 100% to the carrier substrate and a cumulative transfer displacement of less than 1 µm in the Micro-LED inverted chip array. Furthermore, cleaning agents were used to remove adhesive residue from the receiving substrate after transfer, improving the bonding yield between the chip and the thin film transistor driver circuit board. This study provides a feasible solution for Micro-LED mass transfer, which could boost its further development toward commercial application.

Abstract Background Analysis of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) offers valuable insights into distinguishing the effects of closely related medical procedures from the patient’s perspective. In this study we compared symptom burden in patients undergoing uniportal thoracoscopic segmentectomy and wedge resection for peripheral small-sized non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods This study included patients with peripheral NSCLC from an ongoing longitudinal prospective cohort study (CN-PRO-Lung 3) who underwent segmentectomy or wedge resection with tumor diameter ≤ 2 cm and consolidation tumor ratio (CTR) ≤ 0.5. PROs data were collected using the Perioperative Symptom Assessment for Lung Surgery questionnaire pre-operatively, daily post-surgery up to the fourth hospitalization day, and weekly post-discharge up to the fourth week. Propensity score matching and a generalized estimation equation model were employed to compare symptom severity. In addition, short-term clinical outcomes were compared. Results In total, data of 286 patients (82.4%) undergoing segmentectomy and 61 patients (17.6%) undergoing wedge resection were extracted from the cohort. No statistically significant differences were found in the proportion of moderate-to-severe symptoms and mean scores for pain, cough, shortness of breath, disturbed sleep, fatigue, drowsiness, and distress during the 4-day postoperative hospitalization or the 4-week post-discharge period before or after matching (all p > 0.05). Compared with segmentectomy, wedge resection showed better short-term clinical outcomes, including shorter operative time (p = 0.001), less intraoperative bleeding (p = 0.046), and lower total hospital costs (p = 0.002). Conclusions The study findings indicate that uniportal thoracoscopic segmentectomy and wedge resection exert similar early postoperative symptom burden in patients with peripheral NSCLC (tumor diameter ≤ 2 cm and CTR ≤ 0.5). Insecticides play a crucial role in safeguarding crops from pest. However, prior to their release, it is essential to assess the efficacy and potential effects of these protectants. Flupyradifurone (FBF) and sulfoxaflor (SFX), two insecticides commonly used to control aphids, have been found to exert negative effects on the growth and development of Binodoxys communis Gahan, a beneficial parasitic wasp that targets aphids. However, it remains unknown if FBF and SFX influence the symbiotic bacteria residing within B. communis. In this study, 16SrRNA sequencing was utilized to assess the populations of B. communis symbionts exposed to sublethal concentrations (LC10 and LC25) of FBF and SFX. The control and treatment groups exhibited similar bacterial community structures, with Bacteroidota identified as the dominant phylum in each. After exposure to FBF and SFX, the diversity and richness of symbionts (Firmicutes, Bacteroidota, and Actinobacteriota) in B. communis changed notably. The two different insecticides and exposure durations exerted distinct effects on the microbial community. For instance, SFX stress resulted in a decrease in Akkermansia and an increase in Escherichia Shigella 1h after exposure, with both returning to baseline levels after 3d. In contrast, FBF exposure caused a reduction in Akkermansia presence after 1h, which persisted even after 3d. This study represents the first assessment of the effects of FBF and SFX exposure on symbiotic bacteria in B. communis, expanding our understanding of how insecticides influence natural enemies and their symbiotic bacterial relationships. This study provides theoretical guidance for field applications of FBF and SFX, as well as a reasonable basis for exploring chemical resistance conferred by symbiotic bacteria.

IntroductionSymbiotic bacteria play key roles in a variety of important life processes of insects such as development, reproduction and environmental adaptation, and the elucidation of symbiont population structure and dynamics is crucial for revealing the underlying regulatory mechanisms. The marmalade hoverfly (Episyrphus balteatus) is not only a remarkable aphid predator, but also a worldwide pollinator second to honeybees. However, its symbiont composition and dynamics remain unclear.MethodsHerein, we investigate the symbiotic bacterial dynamics in marmalade hoverfly throughout whole life cycle, across two sexes, and in its prey Megoura crassicauda by 16S rRNA sequencing.ResultsIn general, the dominant phyla were Proteobacteria and Firmicutes, and the dominant genera were Serratia and Wolbachia. Serratia mainly existed in the larval stage of hoverfly with the highest relative abundance of 86.24% in the 1st instar larvae. Wolbachia was found in adults and eggs with the highest relative abundance of 62.80% in eggs. Significant difference in species diversity was observed between the adults feeding on pollen and larvae feeding on M. crassicauda, in which the dominant symbiotic bacteria were Asaia and Serratia, respectively. However, between two sexes, the symbionts exhibited high similarity in species composition. In addition, our results suggested that E. balteatus obtainded Serratia mainly through horizontal transmission by feeding on prey aphids, whereas it acquired Wolbachia mainly through intergeneration vertical transmission. Taken together, our study revealed the effects of development stages, diet types and genders of E. balteatus on symbionts, and explored transmission modes of dominant bacteria Serratia and Wolbachia.DiscussionOur findings lay a foundation for further studying the roles of symbiotic bacteria in E. balteatus life cycle, which will benefit for revealing the co-adaptation mechanisms of insects and symbiotic bacteria.

Abstract Background Pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma (PSC) is a rare and highly malignant type of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), for which the treatment of choice is surgery. For peripheral PSC growing outward and invading the chest wall, a complete resection of the affected lung lobes and the invaded chest wall can improve long-term prognosis. However, when the extent of the resected chest wall is large, reconstruction is often required to reduce the risk of postoperative complications. Here, we present a case of PSC invading the chest wall treated with successful extended radical resection for lung cancer and chest wall reconstruction. Case presentation A 58-year-old male patient with a nodule in the right upper lobe that had been identified on physical examination 2 years before presentation presented to our hospital with a recent cough, expectoration, and chest pain. Imaging revealed a mass in the right upper lobe that had invaded the chest wall. Preoperative puncture pathology revealed poorly differentiated NSCLC. We performed extended radical resection for lung cancer under open surgery and reconstructed the chest wall using stainless steel wire and polypropylene meshes. The procedure was uneventful, and the patient was discharged 7 days postoperatively. Furthermore, the final pathology revealed PSC. Conclusions This case underscores the feasibility of surgical R0 resection in patients with PSC with chest wall invasion and no lymph node metastasis, potentially enhancing long-term outcomes. The novel aspect of this case lies in the individualized chest wall reconstruction for a large defect, using cost-effective materials that offered satisfactory structural support and postoperative recovery, thereby providing a valuable reference for similar future surgical interventions.

Power loads usually have multiple cycles, and the traditional forecasting methods only use the historical loads under various types of cycles together as input features to construct the forecasting model, ignoring the deep features under multiple cycles. The simultaneous inputs will lead to the cycles overlapping and influencing each other, which will be difficult to deal with when building the model. Therefore, this paper proposes a GRO-Bagging day-ahead power curve forecasting model based on multi-cycle feature extraction. First, the multi-periodicity of the power load is analyzed. The one-dimensional time series is converted to two-dimensional according to the multiple cycles of power load. Then, the multi-periodic feature extraction is performed by a multi-size convolutional feature extraction layer with parallel selected based on the data characteristics and modeling mechanism, and Bootstrap Aggregating (Bagging) method is used to construct different prediction models for the datasets containing different periodic features; finally, Gold Rush Optimization (GRO) algorithm is introduced and improved by using the Tent chaotic mapping and elite strategy, and the improved optimization algorithm is used for the weight optimization of the model, the error feedback mechanism is introduced to achieve the weight dynamic Updating. To prove the superiority of the proposed model, a series of comparison experiments and ablation experiments are carried out on real datasets, and the results show that the proposed method has higher prediction accuracy, and prove that the multi-period feature extraction and dynamic weighting methods have a positive and active effect on load prediction.

Abstract Background While the role of low-dose computed tomography (CT) in lung cancer screening is established, its limitations in detailing pulmonary vascular variations are less emphasized. Three-dimensional reconstruction technology allows surgeons to reconstruct a patient’s bronchial and pulmonary vascular structures using CT scan results. However, low-dose CT may not provide the same level of clarity as enhanced CT in displaying pulmonary vascular details. This limitation can be unfavorable for preoperative detection of potential pulmonary vascular variations, especially in cases involving planned segmentectomy. Case Presentation We report a case of a 58-year-old female with lung cancer, initially planned for Da Vinci robot-assisted thoracoscopic segmentectomy. Unexpectedly, during surgery, a pulmonary vein variation in the right upper lobe was discovered, leading to a change in the surgical method to a lobectomy. The patient had four variant right upper lobe veins draining into the superior vena cava and one into the left atrium. The surgery was complicated by significant bleeding and postoperative pulmonary congestion. Postoperative pathology confirmed adenocarcinoma. Conclusions This case highlights the importance of meticulous intraoperative exploration, particularly in cases involving planned segmentectomy, as unexpected pulmonary vein variations can significantly affect surgical decision-making. While three-dimensional reconstruction based on preoperative CT data is a valuable tool, it may not capture the full complexity of the anatomical variations. We discuss potential preoperative imaging techniques, including contrast-enhanced CT and CT angiography, as methods to better identify these variations. The enhanced visualization provided by robot-assisted surgery plays a crucial role in identifying and adapting to these variations, underscoring the advantages of this surgical approach. Our report contributes to the existing literature by providing a detailed account of how these principles were applied in a real-world scenario, reinforcing the need for surgical adaptability and awareness of the limitations of low-dose CT in complex cases.

Objective: The present study was aimed to develop the simultaneous determination of four kinds of epi-catechins ((-)-epicatechin, (-)-epicatechin gallate, (-)-epigallocatechin and (-)-epigallocatechin gallate) and their oxidized dimers (four kinds of theaflavin (TF): theaflavin, theaflavin-3-gallate, theaflavin-3'-gallate and theaflavin-3,3'-digallate, three kinds of theasinensin (TS): TSA, TSB and TSC), gallic acid and caffeine by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Methods: Firstly, TSA, TSB and TSC were chemically synthesized. Then, the gradient elution conditions for HPLC analysis were obtained according to the reported methods with some modifications. Chromatographic separation was achieved on a Cosmosil 5C18-AR-Ⅱ column (250 mm×4.6 mm, 5 μm). Ultrapure water (eluent A), 50 mmol/L H3PO4 (eluent B) and acetonitrile (eluent C) were used as the mobile phases. The DAD acquisition wavelength was set at 280 nm. The flow rate was 0.8 mL/min and oven temperature was set at 30 ℃. The volume of injection was 20 μL. Finally, the conents of these componds mentioned above in green, oolong, black and dark teas were determined by the developed HPLC method. Results: Under the optimized conditions, 4 kinds of epicatechins, 4 kinds of theaflavins, 3 kinds of theasinensins, gallic acid and caffeine could be separated within 66 min. At the same time, in the range of 0.01~1.00 mg/mL, the substances and their peak areas showed a good linear relationship (R2, 0.9904~0.9966). The relative standard of deviation (RSD) for repeatability was 1.034%~4.008%. The RSD of the precision and the stability were 1.882%~4.835% and 0.349%~3.994%, respectively. The recovery test of three concentrations was in the range of 90.106%~107.331% and the RSD was less than 3.268%. In adition, it was found that the contents of these 13 compounds were significantly different among different tea samples, and all the detected values were within the effective determination range of the standard curve. Conclusion: The developend method is simple, accurate, and reproducible, it can be used for the simultaneous determination of epi-catechins, theaflavins, theasinensins, gallic acid, and caffeine in tea samples.

Abstract The oriental armyworm, Mythimna separata, is an extremely destructive polyphagous pest with a broad host range that seriously threatens the safety of agricultural production. Here, a high-quality chromosome-level genome was assembled using Illumina, PacBio HiFi long sequencing, and Hi-C scaffolding technologies. The genome size was 706.30 Mb with a contig N50 of 22.08 Mb, and 99.2% of the assembled sequences were anchored to 31 chromosomes. In addition, 20,375 protein-coding genes and 258.68 Mb transposable elements were identified. The chromosome-level genome assembly of M. separata provides a significant genetic resource for future studies of this insect and contributes to the development of management strategies.

The pursuit of operational advancements in direct formic acid fuel cells (DFAFCs) necessitates the development of high-performance platinum (Pt)-based catalysts for formic acid electrooxidation (FAOR). However, FAOR on Pt-based catalysts follows a dual pathway mechanism, in which the direct pathway is a preferred route due to its efficient dehydrogenation process. Conversely, the indirect pathway results in the generation of adsorbed CO species, a process that deleteriously poisons the active sites of the catalyst, with CO species only being oxidizable at higher potentials, causing a significant compromise in catalyst performance. Herein, we have successfully synthesized Pt-C3N4@CNT, where three Pt clusters are precisely dispersed in a triplet form within the C3N4 by virtue of the unique structure of C3N4. The mass activity for the direct pathway (0.44 V) delivered a current density of 1.91 A mgPt−1, while the indirect pathway (0.86 V) had no obvious oxidation peak. The selectivity of Pt-C3N4@CNT catalysts for the direct pathway of FAOR was improved due to the special structure of C3N4, which facilitates the dispersion of Pt tri-atoms in the structure and the electronic interaction with Pt. In this study, we provide a new strategy for the development of highly active and selective catalysts for DFAFCs.

IntroductionExcessive application of nitrogen fertilizer in cotton field causes soil and water pollution as well as significant increase of aphid population. Reasonable fertilization is an important approach to improve agricultural production efficiency and reduce agriculture-derived pollutions. This study was aimed to explore the effects of nitrogen fertilizer on the Bt cotton physiological characteristics and the growth and development of A. gossypii, a sap-sucking cotton pest.MethodsFive different levels of Ca(NO3)2 (0.0 g/kg, 0.3 g/kg, 0.9 g/kg, 2.7 g/kg and 8.1 g/kg) were applied into vermiculite as nitrogen fertilizer in order to explore the effects of nitrogen fertilizer on the growth and development of Bt cotton and aphids.ResultsThe results showed that the medium level of nitrogen fertilizer (0.9 g/kg) effectively facilitated the growth of Bt cotton plant and suppressed the population expansion of aphids, whereas high and extremely high nitrogen application (2.7 and 8.1 g/kg) significantly increased the population size of aphids. Both high and low nitrogen application benefited aphid growth in multiple aspects such as prolonging nymph period and adult lifespan, enhancing fecundity, and improving adult survival rate by elevating soluble sugar content in host Bt cotton plants. Cotton leaf Bt toxin content in medium nitrogen group (0.9 g/kg) was significantly higher than that in high (2.7 and 8.1 g/kg) and low (0.3 g/kg) nitrogen groups, but Bt toxin content in aphids was very low in all the nitrogen treatment groups, suggesting that medium level (0.9 g/kg) might be the optimal nitrogen fertilizer treatment level for promoting cotton seedling growth and inhibiting aphids.DiscussionOverall, this study provides insight into trophic interaction among nitrogen fertilizer levels, Bt cotton, and cotton aphid, and reveals the multiple effects of nitrogen fertilizer levels on growth and development of cotton and aphids. Our findings will contribute to the optimization of the integrated management of Bt cotton and cotton aphids under nitrogen fertilization.

Abstract Cancer immunotherapy has become a mainstream cancer treatment over traditional therapeutic modes. Cancer cells can undergo programmed cell death including ferroptosis, pyroptosis, autophagy, necroptosis, apoptosis and cuproptosis which are find to have intrinsic relationships with host antitumor immune response. However, direct use of cell death inducers or regulators may bring about severe side effects that can also be rapidly excreted and degraded with low therapeutic efficacy. Nanomaterials are able to carry them for long circulation time, high tumor accumulation and controlled release to achieve satisfactory therapeutic effect. Nowadays, a large number of studies have focused on nanomedicines‐based strategies through modulating cell death modalities to potentiate antitumor immunity. Herein, immune cell types and their function are first summarized, and state‐of‐the‐art research progresses in nanomedicines mediated cell death pathways (e.g., ferroptosis, pyroptosis, autophagy, necroptosis, apoptosis and cuproptosis) with immune response provocation are highlighted. Subsequently, the conclusion and outlook of potential research focus are discussed.

Abstract Background Apolygus lucorum is a worldwide omnivorous pest damaging a range of crops and causing great economic losses. Symbiotic bacteria living in insects play a key role in the nutrition, physiology, and behavior of hosts. Here, we present an experiment using Illumina HiSeq sequencing targeting the V3–V4 regions of bacteria’s 16S rRNA throughout the entire life cycle of A. lucorum. Results The first and second instar nymphs have the largest alpha diversity compared with other life stages of the insect. Bacterial phyla Proteobacteria (72.29%), Firmicutes (15.24%), Actinobacteria (7.76%) exhibit the largest relative abundance in all developmental stages. Erwinia (23.97%) and Lactococcus (10.62%) are the two genera with the highest relative abundance. The relative abundance of Erwinia in the nymph stage is significantly greater than the adult stage, and the relative abundance of Lactococcus in 6-day-old and 9-day-old adult females is higher compared with adult males. Conclusions These results reveal that microbial community composition and relative abundance shift dynamically at different life stages, implying that different bacterial phyla and genera may have specific roles in specific life stages such as metabolism, nutrition absorption, detoxification, and reproduction. This study reveals for the first time the community composition and ecological dynamics of symbiotic bacteria throughout the life stages of A. lucorum, and thus may provide insight to new strategies for pest control.

Abstract α2,6‐sialylation, catalyzed by α2,6‐sialyltransferase (ST6GAL1), plays a pivotal role in immune responses. However, the role of ST6GAL1 in the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC) remains unknown. ST6GAL1 mRNA is highly expressed in UC tissues compared with the corresponding adjacent normal tissues, and α2,6‐sialylation is significantly increased in the colon tissues of patients with UC. The expression of ST6GAL1 and proinflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)‐2, IL‐6, IL‐17, and interferon‐gamma, is also increased. The number of CD4+ T cells increases in UC patients. St6gal1 gene knockout (St6gal1−/‐) rats are established by clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)‐associated gene knockout system. St6gal1 deficiency reduces the levels of pro‐inflammatory cytokines and alleviates colitis symptoms in UC model rats. Ablation of α2,6‐sialylation inhibits the transport of the TCR to lipid rafts and suppresses CD4+ T‐cell activation. The attenuation of TCR signaling downregulates the expression of NF‐κB in ST6GAL1‐/‐ CD4+ T‐cells. Moreover, NF‐κB could bind to the ST6GAL1 promoter to increase its transcription. Ablation of ST6GAL1 downregulates the expression of NF‐κB and reduces the production of proinflammatory cytokines to relieve UC pathogenesis, which is a potential novel target for the clinical treatment of UC.

Cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera) poses a global problem, causing substantial economic and ecological losses. Endosymbionts in insects play crucial roles in multiple insect biological processes. However, the interactions between H. armigera and its symbionts have not been well characterized to date. We investigated the symbionts of H. armigera in the whole life cycle from different geographical locations. In the whole life cycle of H. armigera, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria were the dominant bacteria at the phylum level, while Enterococcus, Enterobacter, Glutamicibacter, and Bacillus were the four dominant bacteria at the genus level. Furthermore, high similarity in symbiotic bacterial community was observed in different stages of H. armigera, which were dominated by Enterococcus and Enterobacter. In fields, the dominant bacteria were Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes, whereas, in the laboratory, the dominant bacteria were Proteobacteria. At the genus level, the dominant bacteria in cotton bollworm eggs of wild populations were Enterobacter, Morganella, Lactococcus, Asaia, Apibacter, and Enterococcus, and the subdominant bacteria were Bartonella, Pseudomonas, and Orbus. Moreover, the symbionts varied with geographical locations, and the closer the geographical distance, the more similar the microbial composition. Taken together, our study identifies and compares the symbiont variation along with geographical gradients and host development dynamic and reveals the high flexibility of microbiome communities in H. armigera, which probably benefits for the successful survival in a complicated changing environment.

Integrated pest management is focused on combining biological and chemical controls. There is evidence of a negative impact of neonicotinoids on biological control, however, sulfoxaflor (SFX), a novel insecticide, its impact on parasitoid natural predator remain limited. Binodoxys communis is an important parasitic natural enemy of Aphis gossypii, which may have direct and indirect toxicity from the insecticides and aphids. Understanding the potential threat of SFX to B. communis is therefore essential to integrated pest management and the conservation of parasitoids. Here, the effects of sublethal doses of SFX on B. communis larvae and adults are presented for the first time. Sublethal SFX doses had a significant negative effect on the survival rate, adult life span, duration of development, and rate of parasitism. Moreover, exposure to sublethal SFX doses also had adverse effects on the biological performance of the next generation of B. communis. Based on the transcriptome analysis, the expression of genes involved in fatty acid metabolism, glycerolipid metabolism, glycerophospholipid metabolism, peroxidase, lysosomes, glutathione metabolism, drug metabolism, and CYP450 were significantly shifted by sublethal SFX exposure. These results indicate that sublethal SFX doses might adversely affect the biological performance of B. communis by altering gene expression related to the function of detoxification systems and energy metabolism. In conclusion, considering the beneficial ecological services of provided by parasitoids and the negative effects of sulfoxaflor across a greater usage scale, we emphasize the importance to optimize pesticide applications in IPM packages, in order to ensure the safety and survival of natural pest parasitoids.

Micro-LED is considered an emerging display technology with significant potential for high resolution, brightness, and energy efficiency in display applications. However, its decreasing pixel size and complex manufacturing process create challenges for its integration with driving units. Recently, researchers have proposed various methods to achieve highly integrated micro-structures with driving unit. Researchers take advantage of the high performance of the transistors to achieve low power consumption, high current gain, and fast response frequency. This paper gives a review of recent studies on the new integration methods of micro-LEDs with different types of transistors, including the integration with BJT, HEMT, TFT, and MOSFET.

Virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) is an RNA-mediated reverse genetics technique that has become an effective tool to investigate gene function in plants. Cotton is one of the most important economic crops globally. In the past decade, VIGS has been successfully applied in cotton functional genomic studies, including those examining abiotic and biotic stress responses and vegetative and reproductive development. This article summarizes the traditional vectors used in the cotton VIGS system, the visible markers used for endogenous gene silencing, the applications of VIGS in cotton functional genomics, and the limitations of VIGS and how they can be addressed in cotton.

Abstract Background Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae), a worldwide polyphagous phloem-feeding agricultural pest, has three wing morphs (winged parthenogenetic female, gynopara, and male) in the life cycle. The exclusive males could fly from summer hosts to winter hosts, which are essential for gene exchanges of cotton aphid populations from different hosts or regions. However, the molecular mechanism of wing differentiation of male in A. gossypii remains unclear. Results Morphological observation of male A. gossypii showed that there is no distinct difference in the external morphologies of the 1st and 2nd instar nymphs. The obvious differentiation of wing buds started in the 3rd instar nymph and was visible via naked eyes in the 4th instar nymphal stage, then adult male emerged with full wings. According to morphological dynamic changes, the development of wings in males were divided into four stages: preliminary stage (the 1st instar to 2nd instar), prophase (the 3rd instar), metaphase (the 4th instar), anaphase (the 5th instar). Results of feeding behavior monitoring via EPG (electrical penetration graph) technology indicated that although the male cotton aphids had strong desire to feed (longer duration of C 55.24%, F 5.05% and Pd waves 2.56%), its feeding efficiency to summer host cotton was low (shorter E1 3.56% and E2 waves 2.63%). Dynamic transcriptome analysis of male aphid at 5 different developmental periods showed that in the 3rd instar nymph, the number of up-regulated DEGs was significant increased, and time-course gene transcriptional pattern analyses results also showed that numerous genes categorized in clusters 3, 5, and 8 had the highest expressed levels, which were consistent with morphological changes of wing buds. These results indicate that the 3rd instar nymph is the critical stage of wing bud differentiation in males. Furthermore, through pathway enrichment analysis of DEGs and WGCNA, it revealed that the neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction, Ras signaling pathway, dopaminergic synapse, circadian entrainment and the corresponding hub genes of PLK1, BUB1, SMC2, TUBG, ASPM, the kinesin family members (KIF23, KIF20, KIF18-19) and the novel subfamily of serine/threonine (Aurora kinase A and Aurora kinase B) probably played an important role in the critical stage of wing bud differentiation. Conclusion This study explored morphological changes and genes transcriptional dynamics males in cotton aphid, revealed the phenomenon of low feeding efficiency of winged males on summer host cotton, and identified key signaling pathways and potential hub genes potentially involved in wing bud differentiation of male in A. gossypii.

While genetically modified (GM) crops bring economic benefits to human beings, their impact on non-target organisms has become an important part of environmental safety assessments. Symbiotic bacteria play an important role in eukaryotic biological functions and can adjust host communities to adapt to new environments. Therefore, this study examined the effects of Cry1B protein on the growth and development of non-target natural enemies of Pardosa astrigera (L. Koch) from the perspective of symbiotic bacteria. Cry1B protein had no significant effect on the health indicators of P. astrigera (adults and 2nd instar spiderlings). 16S rRNA sequencing results revealed that Cry1B protein did not change the symbiotic bacteria species composition of P. astrigera, but did reduce the number of OTU and species diversity. In 2nd instar spiderlings, neither the dominant phylum (Proteobacteria) nor the dominant genus (Acinetobacter) changed, but the relative abundance of Corynebacterium-1 decreased significantly; in adult spiders, the dominant bacteria genera of females and males were different. The dominant bacterial genera were Brevibacterium in females and Corynebacterium-1 in males, but Corynebacterium-1 was the dominant bacteria in both females and males feeding on Cry1B. The relative abundance of Wolbachia also increased significantly. In addition, bacteria in other genera varied significantly by sex. KEGG results showed that Cry1B protein only altered the significant enrichment of metabolic pathways in female spiders. In conclusion, the effects of Cry1B protein on symbiotic bacteria vary by growth and development stage and sex.

Assessing the potential effects of insecticides on beneficial biological control agents is key to facilitating the success of integrated pest management (IPM) approaches. Flupyradifurone (FPF) is a novel neonicotinoid insecticide that is replacing traditional neonicotinoids over a large geographical range to control pests. Binodoxys communis, is the dominant parasitic natural enemy of aphids. To date, no reports have addressed sublethal effects of FPF on B. communis. In this study, the lethal and sublethal effects of FPF on B. communis were investigated by indirect exposure to larvae and direct exposure to adults. Results showed that the sublethal LC10 and LC25 of FPF had negative effects on the biological parameters of B. communis, including significantly reducing survival rate, adult longevity, parasitism rate, and emergence rate, and significantly prolonging the developmental stages from egg to cocoons. In addition, we observed a transgenerational effect of FPF on the next generation (F1). RNA-Seq transcriptomic analysis identified a total of 1429 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) that were significantly changed between FPF-treated and control groups. These DEGs are mainly enriched in metabolic pathways such as peroxisomes, glutamate metabolism, carbon metabolism, fatty acid metabolism, and amino acid metabolism. This report is the first comprehensive evaluation of how FPF effects B. communis, which adds to the methods of assessing pesticide exposure in parasitic natural enemies. We speculate that the significant changes in pathways, especially those related to lipid synthesis, may be the reason for weakened parasitoid biocontrol ability. The present study provides new evidence for the toxic effects and environmental residue risk of FPF.

Abstract Background Cotton (Gossypium spp.) is one of the most important economic crops worldwide, and its production plays an important role in the economy of many countries. Genetically modified herbicide-tolerant (GMHT) crops, which were developed to minimize the losses caused by weeds, have gradually become the most widely adopted genetically modified crops in the world due to their economic and environmental benefits. However, the potential ecological and environmental risks of GMHT crops have attracted extensive attention and controversy. Arthropod communities form a prominent part of the biodiversity of agroecosystems and are important indicators of environmental health. Elucidating the effects of GMHT crops on the diversity of arthropod communities is necessary to ensure the safety of GMHT crops. Result In this 2-year study, we investigated the potential impact of GMHT crops on arthropod communities. The GMHT cotton variety GGK2 with glyphosate tolerance and its near-isogenic non-GMHT variety K312 were used for the experimental groups. The Shannon diversity index (H), Simpson diversity index (D), Pielou evenness index (J), and principal co-ordinates analysis (PCoA) of the Bray–Curtis distance were used to evaluate the population dynamics and biodiversity of arthropods in cotton fields. No significant differences were found between GGK2 and K312 in their total abundance of arthropod communities, and biodiversity indexes on most sampling dates. The arthropod composition in the GGK2 and K312 plots was similar. Sampling dates had a significant effect on biodiversity indexes, whereas no clear tendencies related to cotton variety or cotton variety × sampling dates interaction were recorded. In addition, PCoA revealed high similarity between the arthropod communities in the plots of the GMHT cotton variety GGK2 and its near-isogenic variety K312. Conclusion There was no obvious difference in abundance, diversity indexes of arthropod communities between GMHT cotton variety GGK2 and its near-isogenic variety K312 under the small-scale planting regime.

Abstract Background Greenhouse cultivation is mainly a monoculture system, which leads to severe soil degradation, with significant changes to the structure of the soil microbial community. The present study aimed to determine the effects of fertilizer and waterlogging (WL) on the microbial community of soil that was continuously monocropped with cucumber in a greenhouse for 3 years (2016–2019). Biolog EcoPlates™ and high-throughput sequencing were used to investigate the abundance, structure, and diversity of the soil microbial community. Results Compared with the initial total soluble salt content (8.65 g/kg), total soluble salt content after WL significantly decreased to 0.597 g/kg. Compared to control (CK) soil, the abundance of fungal species in the chemical fertilizer plus waterlogging (CFWL)-treated soil increased by 40.5%, while bacterial species abundance in the organic fertilizer plus waterlogging (OFWL)-treated soil increased by 10.7%. Cotton fibers provide an important source of raw materials for the textile industry worldwide. Cotton fiber is a kind of single cell that differentiates from the epidermis of the ovule and provides a perfect research model for the differentiation and elongation of plant cells. Cotton fiber initiation is the first stage throughout the entire developmental process. The number of fiber cell initials on the seed ovule epidermis decides the final fiber yield. Thus, it is of great significance to clarify the mechanism underlying cotton fiber initiation. Fiber cell initiation is controlled by complex and interrelated regulatory networks. Plant phytohormones, transcription factors, sugar signals, small signal molecules, functional genes, non-coding RNAs, and histone modification play important roles during this process. Here, we not only summarize the different kinds of factors involved in fiber cell initiation but also discuss the mechanisms of these factors that act together to regulate cotton fiber initiation. Our aim is to synthesize a systematic and comprehensive review of different factors during fiber initiation that will provide the basics for further illustrating these mechanisms and offer theoretical guidance for improving fiber yield in future molecular breeding work.

The cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, is a species of polyphagous aphid with many biotypes, and its host transfer has always been the focus of research on the control of cotton aphid. An important factor affecting aphid specialization is the nutritional association with microbial symbionts that provide the host with nutrients lacking in the diet. We analyzed the microbial composition and biodiversity of reared on zucchini for 10 generations (T1–T10) and cotton as a control (CK), by high-throughput Illumina sequencing of 16S ribosomal RNA genes. The findings showed that the change in plant hosts decreased the richness and variety of microbial species. Regardless of whether the plant host is altered or not, Proteobacteria and Firmicutes are the predominate phyla in cotton-specialized aphid. Additionally, cotton-specialized aphids that live in zucchini had considerably lower relative abundances of non-dominant phyla (Bacteroidetes) than cotton hosts. At the genus level the dominant communities were Buchnera, Acinetobacter, and Arsenophonus. The relative abundance of Buchnera was significantly higher in aphids reared on zucchini than those on cotton, whereas the opposite was observed for Acinetobacter, as well as for some non-dominant communities (Stenotrophomonas, Pseudomons, Flavobacterium, Novosphingobium). Collectively, this study clarifies the dynamic changes of symbiotic bacteria in cotton-specialized aphids reared on zucchini for multiple generations. Among them, Buchnera is crucial for the cotton-specialized aphid to get nutrients during the transfer of the host and has a favorable impact on the colonization of cotton-specialized aphid populations on zucchini hosts. It not only enriches our understanding of the relationship between the bacterial microbiota of aphids and their adaptability to new hosts, zucchini, but also expands the current body of research on the mechanisms underlying the host shifting ability of cotton-specialized aphids.

IntroductionReproductive polymorphism and symbiotic bacteria are commonly observed in aphids, but their interaction remains largely unclear. In polymorphic aphid species (Aphis gossypii), offspring of parthenogenetic females (PFs) develops into sexuparae which produces gynoparae and males successively. Gynoparae further produces sexual females (SFs), and these sexual females mate with males to produce offspring.MethodsIn this study, we investigated the dynamic changes of symbiotic bacteria during the above-mentioned five reproductive morph switch in A. gossypii via 16S rRNA sequencing technology.ResultsThe results showed that species richness and community diversity of symbiotic bacteria in males were the highest. Proteobacteria was absolutely dominant bacterial phylum (with relative abundance of more than 90%) in the five reproductive morphs of A. gossypii, and Buchnera was absolutely dominant genus (with relative abundance of >90%), followed by Rhodococcus, Pseudomonas, and Pantoea. Male-killing symbiont Arsenophonus presented the highest relative abundance in gynoparae, a specific morph whose offsprings were exclusively sexual females. Both principal component analysis (PCA) and clustering analysis showed trans-generation similarity in microbial community structure between sexuparae and sexual females, between PFs and gynoparae. PICRUSt 2 analysis showed that symbiotic bacteria in the five reproductive morphs were mainly enriched in metabolic pathways.DiscussionReproductive morph switch induced by environmental changes might be associated with bacterial community variation and sexual polymorphism of aphids. This study provides a new perspective for further deciphering the interactions between microbes and reproductive polymorphism in host aphids.

ABSTRACT: Selenium (Se) has been proven to be an essential trace element for organism. Se deficiency in poultry can cause widespread damage, such as exudative diathesis. The liver is not only the main organ of metabolism, but also one of the organs with high Se content in organism. Recent studies have shown that solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC7A11) plays a key role in the negative regulation of ferroptosis. In order to explore the mechanism of Se deficiency induces liver ferroptosis in broilers, and the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in this process, we divided broilers into 2 groups: control group (0.2 mg/kg Se) and Se deficiency group (0.03 mg/kg Se). Hematoxylin-Eosin staining detected liver tissue damage in broilers. Predicted and verified the targeting relationship between miR-129-3p and SLC7A11 through miRDB and dual luciferase report experiments. The genes related to ferroptosis were detected by qRT-PCR and Western Blot. The results showed that the expression level of miR-129-3p mRNA in Se-deficient liver was significantly increased. To understand whether the miR-129-3p/SLC7A11 axis could involve in the process of ferroptosis, our further research showed that overexpression of miR-129-3p could reduce the expression of SLC7A11 and its downstream GCL, GSS, and GPX4, thereby inducing ferroptosis. These data indicates that miR-129-3p affected ferroptosis under Se deficiency conditions through the SLC7A11 pathway. Our research provides a new perspective for the mechanism of Se deficiency on the liver damage.

In this paper, a hybrid Mach-Zehnder optical modulator is proposed based on silicon nitride/organic polymer waveguides, which is expected to break through the performance bottleneck of the silicon-based optical modulator by exploiting the low-loss optical transmission property of silicon nitride waveguides and the excellent modulation performance of organic polymers. For reduction of the optical loss and ease of photonic packaging, perfectly vertical silicon nitride bidirectional grating couplers are utilized for both input/output optical coupling and power splitting/combining. Thus, a Mach-Zehnder interferometer can be constructed with a back-to-back configuration of such grating couplers. With grating apodization, the coupler can achieve a simulated coupling efficiency of 70%. To bridge the silicon nitride waveguides and the polymer waveguides, a longitudinal adiabatic mode-spot converter with a transmission efficiency of 99.2% was designed. In this paper, high-β donor-π bridge-accepter molecule YLD-124 combined with HD-BB-OH as the host polymer is utilized for a design example. The polymer waveguides with inverted ridge structure can be realized through the processes of silica cladding etching, spin coating or microfluidic trench filling of polymer. Following this design, we numerically demonstrate a hybrid silicon nitride-polymer Mach-Zehnder modulator with modulation efficiency of 1.57 Vcm and Electric-Optical bandwidth of 174 GHz. The total insertion loss is less than 5.74 dB, including two grating coupler losses of about 3.08 dB.

Fipronil is widely used in the agricultural world as an efficient phenylpyrazole insecticide to control pests. Binodoxys communis is a key parasitic natural enemy of major homopteran pests and can successfully control the population of pests such as cotton aphids. It has not yet been studied what effects would sublethal doses of fipronil have on Binodoxys communis larvae. Here, this study evaluated the effect of fipronil on Binodoxys communis larvae and analyze the transcriptome results. The results showed that LC10 (1.19 mg/L) and LC25 (1.73 mg/L) had significant negative effects on the survival rate and parasitism rate of F0 generation. Moreover, exposure to high concentrations (LC25) of fipronil still had obvious passive effect on the F1 generation of Binodoxys communis. These results indicated that sublethal doses of fipronil have malignant effects on the biological functions of parasitoids and their offspring. The results of transcriptome analysis showed that differentially expressed genes (DEGs) of Binodoxys communis after LC10 treatment are mainly related to immunity and detoxification. LC25 treatment instead resulted in changes in the expression of genes related to nutrition, energy and metabolism reactions. Seven of the identified DEGs were selected for real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR analysis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to evaluate the sublethal, intergenerational, and transcriptomic side effects of fipronil on larvae of parasitic natural pest enemies. Our findings provide data to accurately assess the risk of fipronil usage on Binodoxys communis larvae, and provide important theoretical support for the comprehensive prevention and control of natural enemies and pesticides.

IntroductionBacteria play critical roles in the reproduction, metabolism, physiology, and detoxification of their insect hosts. The ladybird beetle (Harmonia axyridis) harbors a myriad of endosymbiotic microbes. However, to date, little is known about how the microbial composition of H. axyridis varies throughout its life cycle.MethodsIn this study, 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and quantitative PCR were employed to investigate the diversity and dynamics of bacterial symbionts across the egg, larval, pupae, and adults stages of H. axyridis.ResultsHigher bacterial community richness and diversity were observed in eggs, followed by those in adults and pupae. The community richness index differed significantly between second-instar larvae and other developmental stages. Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria were the dominant phyla. Staphylococcus, Enterobacter, Glutamicibacter, and Acinetobacter were the dominant bacteria genera; however, their relative abundances fluctuated across host developmental stages. Interestingly, the larval stage harbored high proportions of Firmicutes, whereas the adult microbial community largely consisted of Proteobacteria.DiscussionThis study is the first to determine the symbiotic bacterial composition across key life stages of H. axyridis. These outcomes can foster the development of environmental risk assessments and novel biological control strategies.

The lady beetle Propylea japonica is a dominant natural predator of insect pests in farmland ecosystems and an important non-target indicator insect for the environmental safety assessment of GM crops. The commercial cultivation of GM crops may cause P. japonica to frequently be exposed to the Bt protein environment. In this study, the biological characteristics, enzyme activity, and expression levels of detoxification and metabolism in P. japonica were studied after Cry1B protein treatment. No significant differences were observed in developmental duration, emergence rate, or body weight at different ages after feeding larvae 0.5 mg/mL of Cry1B protein compared with the control. Furthermore, there were no significant differences in the activities of glutathione S-transferase (GST), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POD) after feeding 0.25 mg/mL and 0.5 mg/mL Cry1B protein. However, when the concentration of Cry1B protein increased to 1.0 mg/mL, the activities of the GST, CAT, and POD increased significantly. Compared with the control group, there were no significant differences in the expression levels of most detoxification metabolism related genes; only a few genes had changed expression levels at the individual concentrations (CYP345B1, CYP4Q2, CYP9F2, GST, and microsomal GST). Overall, these results suggest that Cry1B protein has little or no effect on the biological characteristics of P. japonica. Genes related to enzyme activity and detoxification are differentially expressed at high concentration stimulation. Therefore, this research suggests that the potential risks of Cry1B for the predator P. japonica are negligible.

The vast majority of parasitoids are capable of precise and meticulous regulation of nutrition and metabolism within the host. An important building block of life, amino acids are critical to the development of parasitoids. To date, research on how parasitoids regulate host amino acid metabolism remains limited. In this study, Aphis gossypii and its dominant parasitoid Binodoxys communis were used as a study system to explore how parasitism may change the regulation of amino acids in A. gossypii with UHPLC-MS/MS and RT-qPCR techniques. Here, for the first 8 h of parasitism the abundance of almost all amino acids in cotton aphids increased, and after 16 h most of the amino acids decreased. An amino acid of parasitic syndrome, the content of Tyr increased gradually after being parasitized. The expression of genes related to amino acid metabolism increased significantly in early stages of parasitism and then significantly decreased gradually. At the same time, the abundance of Buchnera, a cotton aphid specific symbiont increased significantly. Our comprehensive analyses reveal impacts of B. communis on the amino acid regulatory network in cotton aphid from three aspects: amino acid metabolism, gene expression, and bacterial symbionts. Therefore, this research provides an important theoretical basis for parasitoid nutritional regulation in host, which is highly significant as it may inform the artificial reproduction of parasitoids and the biological control of insect pests.

Background To evaluate the prognostic value of plasma YKL‐40 (human cartilage glycoprotein‐39) for acute ischemic stroke. Methods and Results We measured plasma YKL‐40 levels in 3377 participants from CATIS (China Antihypertensive Trial in Acute Ischemic Stroke). Study outcome data on death, major disability (modified Rankin Scale score ≥3), and vascular diseases were collected at 3 months after stroke onset. The primary outcome was defined as a combination of death and major disability. During the 3‐month follow‐up, 828 participants (24.5%) experienced major disability or died. After multivariate adjustment, the highest YKL‐40 quartile was associated with an increased risk of the primary outcome (odds ratio, 1.426 [95% CI, 1.105–1.839]; Ptrend=0.01) compared with the lowest quartile. Abiotic stresses are major environmental conditions that reduce plant growth, productivity and quality. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) approaches can be used to screen stress-responsive proteins and reveal the mechanisms of protein response to various abiotic stresses. Biotin-based proximity labeling (PL) is a recently developed technique to label proximal proteins of a target protein. TurboID, a biotin ligase produced by directed evolution, has the advantages of non-toxicity, time-saving and high catalytic efficiency compared to other classic protein-labeling enzymes. TurboID-based PL has been successfully applied in animal, microorganism and plant systems, particularly to screen transient or weak protein interactions, and detect spatially or temporally restricted local proteomes in living cells. This review concludes classic PPI approaches in plant response to abiotic stresses and their limitations for identifying complex network of regulatory proteins of plant abiotic stresses, and introduces the working mechanism of TurboID-based PL, as well as its feasibility and advantages in plant abiotic stress research. We hope the information summarized in this article can serve as technical references for further understanding the regulation of plant adaptation to abiotic stress at the protein level.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalyst was prepared with a sol-gel method and its characterizations were analyzed TiO2 photocatalytic reduction of Cr6+ was investigated in visible light irradiation and reduction mechanisms were calculated. Prepared TiO2 is anatase with a bandgap of about 2.95 eV. Experimental results display that almost 100% of Cr6+ is removed by visible light-driven TiO2 photocatalytic reduction after 120 min when Cr2O72− initial concentration is 1.0 mg·L−1, TiO2 dosage is 1.0 g·L−1, and pH value is 3. In acidic aqueous solution, HCrO4− is the dominant existing form of Cr6+ and is adsorbed by TiO2, forming a complex catalyst HCrO4−/TiO2 with an increase in wavelength to the visible light zone, demonstrated by UV–Vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy. Based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data, it can be deduced that Cr6+ is adsorbed on the surface of TiO2 and then reduced to Cr3+ in situ by photoelectrons. Self-assembly of HCrO4−/TiO2 complex catalyst and self-reduction of Cr6+ in situ are the key steps to start the visible light-driven TiO2 photocatalytic reduction. Furthermore, TiO2 photocatalytic reduction of Cr6+ fits well with pseudo-first-order kinetics and has the potential application to treat chemical industrial wastewater. Over the years, remote sensing technology has become an important means to obtain accurate agricultural production information, such as crop type distribution, due to its advantages of large coverage and a short observation period. Nowadays, the cooperative use of multi-source remote sensing imagery has become a new development trend in the field of crop classification. In this paper, the polarimetric components of Sentinel-1 (S-1) decomposed by a new model-based decomposition method adapted to dual-polarized SAR data were introduced into crop classification for the first time. Furthermore, a Dual-Channel Convolutional Neural Network (DC-CNN) with feature extraction, feature fusion, and encoder-decoder modules for crop classification based on S-1 and Sentinel-2 (S-2) was constructed. The two branches can learn from each other by sharing parameters so as to effectively integrate the features extracted from multi-source data and obtain a high-precision crop classification map. In the proposed method, firstly, the backscattering components (VV, VH) and polarimetric components (volume scattering, remaining scattering) were obtained from S-1, and the multispectral feature was extracted from S-2. Four candidate combinations of multi-source features were formed with the above features. Following that, the optimal one was found on a trial. Next, the characteristics of optimal combinations were input into the corresponding network branches. In the feature extraction module, the features with strong collaboration ability in multi-source data were learned by parameter sharing, and they were deeply fused in the feature fusion module and encoder-decoder module to obtain more accurate classification results. The experimental results showed that the polarimetric components, which increased the difference between crop categories and reduced the misclassification rate, played an important role in crop classification. Among the four candidate feature combinations, the combination of S-1 and S-2 features had a higher classification accuracy than using a single data source, and the classification accuracy was the highest when two polarimetric components were utilized simultaneously. On the basis of the optimal combination of features, the effectiveness of the proposed method was verified. The classification accuracy of DC-CNN reached 98.40%, with Kappa scoring 0.98 and Macro-F1 scoring 0.98, compared to 2D-CNN (OA reached 94.87%, Kappa scored 0.92, and Macro-F1 scored 0.95), FCN (OA reached 96.27%, Kappa scored 0.94, and Macro-F1 scored 0.96), and SegNet (OA reached 96.90%, Kappa scored 0.95, and Macro-F1 scored 0.97). The results of this study demonstrated that the proposed method had significant potential for crop classification.

Soybean is a source of edible oil for humans and provides a third of the vegetable oil consumed worldwide. Increasing seed oil content in seeds is thus a key objective in soybean breeding. In the present study, a four-way recombinant inbred line (FW-RIL) population comprising 144 lines, planted in 10 environments, and a germplasm panel of 455 accessions, planted in two environments, were used to collect oil-content phenotypes. First, 59 quantitative trait loci (QTL) were detected in the FW-RIL population by inclusive complete interval mapping on a linkage map consisting of 2232 single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. Also in the FW-RILs, 44 quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) were detected by association analysis using 109,676 SNP markers and five methods of multi-locus genome-wide association study. Second, 77 QTN were detected by association analysis in the germplasm panel using 63,306 markers. Comparison of the QTL and QTN suggested four QTN controlling oil content. Pathway analysis was performed on genes in attenuation regions of these four QTN, and two candidate genes involved in the synthesis or metabolism of soybean oil were identified. These findings provide useful information about the genetics of oil content and may contribute to its genetic improvement by marker-assisted selection.

To keep plant height (PH) stable in various densities, mapping QTL underlying te response of PH to density is of importance for soybean breeding. In this study, two soybean RIL populations were planted under two densities in two environments and PH at the pod-bearing stage (PBS), seed-filling stage (SFS) and maturity stage (MS) were measured to identify QTL controlling PH and its response to density increment. Expression of QTL controlling PH varied due to the change of seeding density, and the response to density (RD) of PH at SFS and MS surpassed that at PBS in both populations. Total 25 PH QTL and 8 RD QTL were identified which functioned on PH at three developmental stages. Of 25 PH QTL, 14, 8 and 8 were detected at PBS, SFS and MS, respectively. Three QTL could be expressed at two stages, and thirteen, seven and six QTL played roles separately at PDS, SFS and MS, respectively. Four QTL were expressed in the two seeding densities, and twelve and ten QTL showed effects specifically at low and high seeding density, respectively. Among eight RD QTL, five, two and one acted on PH at PBS, SFS and MS, and five and three QTL functioned in two environments, respectively. The information found in the present research lays the foundation for molecular design breeding on improving PH with stability in multiple densities in soybean.

This study aims to explore the linking mechanisms underlying the relationship between leader proactivity and follower proactivity. Drawing on social learning theory, the present research investigates the effects of leader proactivity on follower proactivity by developing a chain mediation model. An analysis of three-wave lagged data (N = 575) on 575 employees of six firms in China shows that leader proactivity is positively related to follower proactivity and that employees’ role breadth self-efficacy (RBSE) and felt responsibility for constructive change (FRCC) mediate this relationship. The analytical results also show that leader proactivity facilitates follower value congruence, which in turn enhances followers’ RBSE and FRCC and ultimately promotes followers’ proactivity. The results extend the current proactivity literature and fill the research gap by investigating the relationship between leader proactivity and follower proactivity. The current study also contributes to the literature by identifying the mediating mechanism of the “can do” and “reason to” mechanisms that link leader proactivity to follower proactivity.

The large-scale commercial cultivation of genetically modified (GM) cotton has brought significant economic and environmental benefits. However, GM crops must undergo strict environmental monitoring and long-term observation. An important natural enemy insect in cotton fields, Geocoris pallidipennis, can ingest the Bt protein expressed in GM cotton by feeding on herbivorous insects that feed on the cotton. However, the potential risk of GM cotton to G. pallidipennis is still unclear. We here evaluated the effects of Bt cotton expressing the Cry1Ac/1Ab protein on nymphs and adults G. pallidipennis. Cry1Ac protein was detected in the midgut of the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera, after it ingested Bt cotton, and in the midgut of G. pallidipennis nymphs and adults preying on Bt-fed H. armigera. However, the survival rate, growth, development, and fecundity of G. pallidipennis were not adversely affected. Furthermore, G. pallidipennis cadherins, and those genes related to detoxification, antioxidant activity, nutrient utilization, and immune function were not differentially expressed in response to Cry1Ac exposure. Finally, we showed that Cry1Ac could not bind to brush border membrane vesicles (BBMV) proteins in G. pallidipennis nymphs or adults. In summary, these results indicate that the potential negative effect of transgenic Cry1Ac/1Ab cotton on the insect redator G. pallidipennis is negligible.

Background The effect of serum growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF‐15) on poststroke depression (PSD) remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the association between serum GDF‐15 and PSD among patients with ischemic stroke. Methods and Results This study was based on a random sample from CATIS (China Antihypertensive Trial in Acute Ischemic Stroke). A total of 572 patients from 7 participating hospitals with GDF‐15 levels were included in this analysis. The study outcome was depression (Hamilton Depression Rating Scale score ≥8) at 3 months after ischemic stroke. A total of 231 (40.4%) patients with stroke experienced PSD within 3 months. The multivariate‐adjusted odds ratio of PSD associated with the highest tertile of serum GDF‐15 was 2.92 (95% CI, 1.36–6.27) compared with the lowest tertile. Each SD increase in log‐transformed GDF‐15 was associated with a 42% (95% CI, 2%–97%) increased risk of PSD, and a linear association between serum GDF‐15 and the risk of PSD was observed (P for linearity=0.006). Conclusions Elevated serum GDF‐15 levels in the acute phase of ischemic stroke were independently associated with PSD, suggesting that GDF‐15 may be a valuable prognostic biomarker for PSD.

Background: Aphis gossypii Glover is an important agricultural pest distributed worldwide. Binodoxys communis Gahan is the main parasitoid wasp of A. gossypii. Previous studies have shown that parasitization causes reduced egg production in A. gossypii, but the effects of parasitism on the symbiotic bacteria in the host ovaries are unknown. Results: In this study, we analyzed the microbial communities in the ovaries of A. gossypii without and after parasitization. Whether parasitized or not, Buchnera was the dominant genus of symbiotic bacteria in the ovaries, followed by facultative symbionts including Arsenophonus, Pseudomonas, and Acinetobacter. The relative abundance of Buchnera in the aphid ovary increased after parasitization for 1 d in both third-instar nymph and adult stages, but decreased after parasitization for 3 d. The shifts in the relative abundance of Arsenophonus in both stages were the same as those observed for Buchnera. In addition, the relative abundance of Serratia remarkably decreased after parasitization for 1 d and increased after parasitization for 3 d. A functional predictive analysis of the control and parasitized ovary microbiomes revealed that pathways primarily enriched in parasitization were “amino acid transport and metabolism” and “energy production and conversion.” Finally, RT-qPCR analysis was performed on Buchnera, Arsenophonus, and Serratia. The results of RT-qPCR were the same as the results of 16S rDNA sequencing. Conclusions: These results provide a framework for investigating shifts in the microbial communities in host ovaries, which may be responsible for reduced egg production in aphids. These findings also broaden our understanding of the interactions among aphids, parasitoid wasps, and endosymbionts.
