PurposeThe research debate on the direct relationship between environmental strategy and environmental management accounting (EMA) is quite popular; however, integration challenges between these two factors still persist at the firm level. This paper seeks to adopt the contingency theory perspective to examine how EMA implementation varies across organizations with different intensity levels of environmental management strategy implementation (i.e. environmental management maturity, EMM).Design/methodology/approachThe paper uses a web-based survey, designed and administered to public listed companies and members of three industry chambers in Sri Lanka.FindingsThis study finds that EMA implementation is significantly different among organizations at varying EMM stages. Further, it is observed that organizations at higher stages of EMM use significantly greater domain-based EMA tools and EMA for functional purposes. Therefore, the results show that when organizations progress from reactive to proactive environmental strategies, the EMA evolves to encapsulate and diversify to deal with more-sophisticated environmental management activities.Originality/valueThis is the first study to provide cross-sectional evidence on the relationship between the application of EMA tools and functional uses and the intensity of the environmental strategy pursuance (or EMM). It also proposes a multi-item comprehensive measurement tool for EMA implementation.

The challenge associated with balancing the three sustainability pillars – social, environmental and economic – has gathered a lot of management scholars’ attention over the past decade. Several events and tragedies have marked the need for academic research on the accountability of major organizations pertaining to their suppliers’ environmental and social practices. Such accountability is even going further upstream the supply chain to the second and third tier supply chain. Despite the popularity and development of the accounting field on matters of environmental or social challenges in supply chain over the past three decades (Bebbington and Larrinaga, 2014), scholars recently noted that applied research in the accounting field pertaining to these issues remain limited (Lee and Schaltegger, 2018). This is specifically the case for social issues in the global supply chain. Social sustainability has received less attention than the other dimensions of sustainability in supply chain research, as the majority of research is aimed toward environmental or economic aspects of sustainability (Seuring and Muller, 2008; Lee and Wu, 2014). Yet, social challenges in the supply chain particularly in developing economies continue to grow (Huq et al., 2016; Jacobs and Singhal, 2017; Sodhi and Tang, 2018).

Algorithmic trading allows investors to avoid emotional and irrational trading decisions and helps them make profits using modern computer technology. In recent years, reinforcement learning has yielded promising results for algorithmic trading. Two prominent challenges in algorithmic trading with reinforcement learning are (1) extracting robust features and (2) learning a profitable trading policy. Another challenge is that it was previously often assumed that both long and short positions are always possible in stock trading; however, taking a short position is risky or sometimes impossible in practice. We propose a practical algorithmic trading method, SIRL-Trader, which achieves good profit using only long positions. SIRL-Trader uses offline/online state representation learning (SRL) and imitative reinforcement learning. In offline SRL, we apply dimensionality reduction and clustering to extract robust features whereas, in online SRL, we co-train a regression model with a reinforcement learning model to provide accurate state information for decision-making. In imitative reinforcement learning, we incorporate a behavior cloning technique with the twin-delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3) algorithm and apply multistep learning and dynamic delay to TD3. The experimental results show that SIRL-Trader yields higher profits and offers superior generalization ability compared with state-of-the-art methods.

This study investigates the implementation of environmental management accounting in translating environmental management strategy into organizational performance. Further, the study identifies the influence of institutional pressures on environmental management strategy and environmental management accounting to provide a better description of the impact of the institutional environment on corporate environmental practices. The data were collected from 144 business entities in Sri Lanka using a web‐based survey and analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling. We found statistically significant evidence to state that the environmental management strategy is positively associated with the environmental and economic performance of organizations, whereas environmental management accounting mediates this relationship. Further, a firm's institutional environment positively affects both environmental management strategies and environmental management accounting. This study emphasizes that the organizational information systems such as environmental management accounting are useful in providing information on environmental costs and monitoring environmental and financial performance when implementing environmental management strategies in the pursuit of corporate sustainable development.

Salmonella is one of the main foodborne pathogens that affect humans and farm animals. The Salmonella genus comprises a group of food-transmitted pathogens which cause highly prevalent foodborne diseases throughout the world. The aim of this study was to appraise the viability of Salmonella Typhimurium biofilm under water treatment at room temperature on different surfaces, specifically stainless steel (SS), plastic (PLA), rubber (RB), and eggshell (ES). After 35 days, the reduction of biofilm on SS, PLA, RB, and ES was 3.35, 3.57, 3.22, and 2.55 log CFU/coupon without water treatment and 4.31, 4.49, 3.50, and 1.49 log CFU/coupon with water treatment, respectively. The dR value (time required to reduce bacterial biofilm by 99% via Weibull modeling) of S. Typhimurium without and with water treatment was the lowest on PLA (176.86 and 112.17 h, respectively) and the highest on ES (485.37 and 2436.52 h, respectively). The viability of the S. Typhimurium on ES and the three food-contact surfaces was monitored for 5 weeks (35days). The results of this study provides valuable information for the control of S. Typhimurium on different surfaces in the food industry, which could reduce the risk to consumers.

This study focuses on micro-level phenomena and time issues that have been traditionally neglected in both corporate governance and corporate social responsibility research. Drawing on agency theory concerning time-based managerial incentives (i.e. short term and long term), we investigate which managerial incentives for compensation drive the sensitivity of corporate social performance ( CSP) to corporate financial performance ( CFP). Using data for publicly listed Korean firms, we found a significant and positive relationship between CSP and CFP, with this relationship strengthened in firms with high managerial ownership but insignificant in those with high earnings-based compensation. Furthermore, we found that the interaction effects of CSP and high earnings-based compensation on CFP become positive in firms with high managerial ownership, indicating that the sensitivity between CSP and CFP is driven by long-term managerial incentives.JEL Classification: M12, M14, G35

Similarity join has become very important for semi- or un-structured data processing and analysis. Although several studies have been conducted on the similarity join, little attention has been paid to a semi-stream similarity join, which is a similarity join between stream data and a large disk-based relation. In this study, we propose the first distributed solution called DSim-Join for semi-stream similarity join problem. DSim-Join minimizes the data transmission, reduces database accesses using a cache in a distributed stream processing engine, parallelizes join processing, and balances the load between parallel join threads. Experimental results obtained using real-world datasets show that DSim-Join yields significantly improved throughput compared with state-of-the-art methods, especially for large datasets. The results also show that DSim-Join is scalable and stable; it is not very sensitive to the parameters such as the micro-batch interval, checkpoint interval, and similarity threshold.

The term ‘Blue Economy (BE)’ is increasingly popular in modern environmental research. The concept seeks to explore ocean-based development opportunities with environmental stewardship and protection. Yet different scholars and actors adopt this term often in conflicting ways without attempting to explore the relevance and the link between the blue economy and the broader environment viz., total environment. The potential opportunities to resolve the conflicts require a better understanding of the impacts and/or interactions of the BE on the total environment. This paper aims to map the interface between the two for a better understanding of the total environment and implications for the BE. Using a systematic literature review, this study finds that the field of the blue economy in association with the total environment is very new and emerging in the literature, and the link between the BE and the total environment is increasingly being invoked, yet clarity on the link or interactions remain vague. By analysing the co-occurrence of selected keywords and networks, we present six clusters (three for general relationship, and the other three for specific dimensions of total environment). In a general relationship between the BE and the total environment, clusters of environmental sustainability, marine resource, and economic development are identified to link directly to the BE. In specific dimensions of the total environment, clusters of growth and sustainable development, spatial planning and environmental management, and environmental sustainability and the BE are presented. The analysis outcomes show that specific areas from the total environment (growth, spatial planning, environmental management, and environmental sustainability) are directly linked to the BE where a call for a wider range of studies in the future is identified.

Topoisomerase IIIβ (Top3β), the only dual-activity topoisomerase in mammals that can change topology of both DNA and RNA, is known to be associated with neurodevelopment and mental dysfunction in humans. However, there is no report showing clear associations of Top3β with neuropsychiatric phenotypes in mice. Here, we investigated the effect of Top3β on neuro-behavior using newly generated Top3β deficient (Top3β−/−) mice. We found that Top3β−/− mice showed decreased anxiety and depression-like behaviors. The lack of Top3β was also associated with changes in circadian rhythm. In addition, a clear expression of Top3β was demonstrated in the central nervous system of mice. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) analysis revealed significantly altered connectivity between many brain regions in Top3β−/− mice, including the connectivity between the olfactory bulb and the cerebellum, the connectivity between the amygdala and the olfactory bulb, and the connectivity between the globus pallidus and the optic nerve. These connectivity alterations in brain regions are known to be linked to neurodevelopmental as well as psychiatric and behavioral disorders in humans. Therefore, we conclude that Top3β is essential for normal brain function and behavior in mice and that Top3β could be an interesting target to study neuropsychiatric disorders in humans.

Purpose Previously, we demonstrated that the specific ratio of Korean multi-herbal formula (SR-5) exhibits hepatoprotective properties against ethanol-induced hepatic damage in rats. Chronic and excessive alcohol consumption is a major etiological factor involved in gastric disease and ulcer development induced by the inflammatory response and oxidative stress. Methods The present study evaluated the gastroprotective effects of SR-5 (100, 150, and 200 mg/kg) against hydrochloride acid/ethanol (HCl/EtOH)-induced and indomethacin/hydrochloride acid (INDO/HCl)-induced gastritis in a mouse model and the mechanisms involved. Results All the tested doses of SR-5 significantly inhibited gastric lesions in the HCl/EtOH-induced ulcer model mice. Similarly, all the tested doses of SR-5 significantly inhibited gastric lesions in the INDO/HCl-induced ulcer model mice. Furthermore, mice pretreated with SR-5 had significantly increased gastric levels of enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants, namely, catalase (CAT) and glutathione (GSH), with concomitant reductions in malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels compared with those in the HCl/EtOH or INDO/HCl group. SR-5 suppressed the expression of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB)/p65, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) to their normal values. Conclusion These findings are the first to demonstrate the powerful protective effect of SR-5 against gastric injury development and provide hope for clinical application.

E2F3, a member of the E2F family, plays a critical role in cell cycle and proliferation by targeting downstream, retinoblastoma (RB) a tumor suppressor family protein. The purpose of this study, was to investigate the role and function of E2F3 in vivo. We examined phenotypic abnormalities, by deletion of the E2f3 gene in mice. Complete ablation of the E2F3 was fully penetrant, in the pure C57BL/6N background. The E2f3+/- mouse embryo developed normally without fatal disorder. However, they exhibited reduced body weight, growth retardation, skeletal imperfection, and poor grip strength ability. Findings suggest that E2F3 has a pivotal role in muscle and bone development, and affect normal mouse growth.

Dendropanax morbifera Lev. (DP) leaves have the potential for use as a functional food ingredient. In this study, D. morbifera Lev. leaves were subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis by proteinase, peptidase, trypsin, bromelain, and papain to increase L-arginine and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels. Hydrolysis time, temperature, pH, vacuum conditions, enzyme type, enzyme concentration, and the order of enzyme administration were optimized to increase L-arginine and GABA concentrations. L-arginine and GABA recoveries were higher when enzymatic treatment was performed prior to the extraction process. No significant changes in L-arginine and GABA production were observed with changes in pH, vacuum conditions, or enzyme concentration. The optimized procedure for obtaining the highest L-arginine and GABA concentrations was to inactivate the enzymes after 8 h of hydrolysis, extract the leaves, and to perform a second hydrolysis step at 16 h with proteinase, trypsin, bromelain, and papain. By increasing L-arginine and GABA levels simultaneously, high-quality hydrolyzed D. morbifera Lev. extract (Hy-DP) was produced efficiently in large quantities at a low cost. With this enzymatic treatment and extraction process, Hy-DP has the potential for use as a functional food ingredient. Further evaluation of Hy-DP as a functional food additive may allow it to be used in foods.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine how corporate environmental management strategies at different environmental management maturity (EMM) stages are influenced by institutional forces in the service sector organizations of a developing country. Design/methodology/approach The authors used a multiple case study approach in this study. Institutional isomorphic pressures (coercive, mimetic and normative) at different EMM stages were used as the analytical framework. Findings The study finds coercive pressures largely shape the corporate environmental management strategies at the reactive stage while mimetic pressures have the greatest influence on the internal integration stage. Combined mimetic and normative pressures influence the environmental strategies at the external integration stage. Further, it emphasizes the importance of various institutional pressures in propelling the organizations in the developing countries to benefit from higher levels of EMM. Originality/value This paper offers a new theoretical approach that highlights the importance of considering the institutional influence of the top-down process of diffusion and simultaneous counter-process of invention by which the lower level organizational actors shape and change their environmental management practices for corporate EMM.

In order to interpret, enrich, and analyze the streaming data, stream applications often access the data stored in an external database. Although there has been a lot of studies on stream processing, little attention has been paid so far to the join between streaming data and stored data. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive solution called DS-join for distributed processing of the join under the micro-batch model of recently distributed stream processing engines (SPEs), such as spark streaming. The micro-batch model performs stream processing as a series of very small batch jobs and is more fault-tolerant in a distributed environment compared with the record-at-a-time model. The DS-join reduces the number of database accesses by using micro-batching. Furthermore, the DS-join optimizes the join operation by minimizing the data shuffling, managing a cache in a distributed SPE, parallelizing the join processing, and balancing the load between the SPE and the external database system. The experimental results using real and synthetic datasets show that, compared with the state-of-the-art methods, the DS-join significantly improves throughput, especially for large databases.

With the advanced investigations into low-dimensional systems, it has become essential to find materials having interesting lattices that can be exfoliated down to monolayer. One particular important structure is a kagome lattice with its potentially diverse and vibrant physics. We report a van-der-Waals kagome lattice material, Pd3P2S8, with several unique properties such as an intriguing flat band. The flat band is shown to arise from a possible compact-localized state of all five 4d orbitals of Pd. The diamagnetic susceptibility is precisely measured to support the calculated susceptibility obtained from the band structure. We further demonstrate that Pd3P2S8 can be exfoliated down to monolayer, which ultimately will allow the possible control of the localized states in this two-dimensional kagome lattice using the electric field gating.

Previously, we demonstrated that a 5% ethanol extract of unripe Rubus coreanus (5-uRCK) and ellagic acid has hypocholesterolemic and antiobesity activity, at least partially mediated by the downregulation of adipogenic and lipogenic gene expression in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed animals. The present study investigated the thermogenic and lipolytic antiobesity effects of 5-uRCK and ellagic acid in HFD-induced obese C57BL/6 mice and explored its mechanism of action. Mice fed an HFD received 5-uRCK or ellagic acid as a post-treatment or pretreatment. Both post-treated and pretreated mice showed significant reductions in body weight and adipose tissue mass compared to the HFD-fed mice. The protein levels of lipolysis-associated proteins, such as adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL), phosphorylated hormone-sensitive lipase (p-HSL), and perilipin1 (PLIN1), were significantly increased in both the 5-uRCK- and ellagic acid-treated mouse epididymal white adipose tissue (eWAT). Additionally, thermogenesis-associated proteins, such as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα), carnitine palmitoyl transferase-1 (CPT1), uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1), and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactivator-1α (PGC1α), in inguinal white adipose tissue (ingWAT) were clearly increased in both the 5-uRCK- and ellagic acid-treated mice compared to HFD-fed mice. These results suggest that 5-uRCK and ellagic acid are effective for suppressing body weight gain and enhancing the lipid profile.

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is essential in understanding the properties of $5d$ transition metal compounds, whose SOC value is large and almost comparable to other key parameters. Over the past few years, there have been numerous studies on the SOC-driven effects of the electronic bands, magnetism, and spin-orbit entanglement for those materials with a large SOC. However, how the SOC affects the lattice dynamics is less studied and remains an unsolved problem. We therefore measured the phonon spectra of $5d$ pyrochlore ${\mathrm{Cd}}_{2}{\mathrm{Os}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{7}$ over the full Brillouin zone to address the question by using inelastic x-ray scattering. Our main finding is a visible mode dependence in the phonon spectra, measured across the metal-insulator transition at 227 K. We examined the SOC strength dependence of the lattice dynamics and its spin-phonon (SP) coupling, with first-principles calculations. Our experimental data taken at 100 K are in good agreement with the theoretical results obtained with the optimized $U=2.0\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$ with SOC. By scaling the SOC strength and the $U$ value in the density-functional theory calculations, we demonstrate that SOC is more relevant than $U$ in explaining the observed mode-dependent phonon energy shifts with temperature. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the phonon energy can be effectively described by scaling SOC. Our work provides clear evidence of SOC producing a non-negligible and essential effect on the lattice dynamics of ${\mathrm{Cd}}_{2}{\mathrm{Os}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{7}$ and its SP coupling.

Non-collinear magnetic order arises for various reasons in several magnetic systems and exhibits interesting spin dynamics. Despite its ubiquitous presence, little is known of how magnons, otherwise stable quasiparticles, decay in these systems, particularly in metallic magnets. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we examine the magnetic excitation spectra in a metallic non-collinear antiferromagnet CrB$_{2}$, in which Cr atoms form a triangular lattice and display incommensurate magnetic order. Our data show intrinsic magnon damping and continuum-like excitations that cannot be explained by linear spin wave theory. The intrinsic magnon linewidth $\Gamma(q,E_{q})$ shows very unusual momentum dependence, which our analysis shows to originate from the combination of two-magnon decay and the Stoner continuum. By comparing the theoretical predictions with the experiments, we identify where in the momentum and energy space one of the two factors becomes more dominant. Our work constitutes a rare comprehensive study of the spin dynamics in metallic non-collinear antiferromagnets. Because of the nature of their work, physical and occupational therapists are at high risk of burnout, which is associated with decreased job satisfaction, medical errors, and mental wellbeing in healthcare professionals. To well manage and minimize potential impact of burnout, risk factors should be determined. This study examined burnout and job stress in physical and occupational therapists in various Korean hospital settings. Physical and occupational therapists from several rehabilitation facilities in South Korea completed a survey between March&ndash, May 2019. A set of questionnaires, including the Maslach Burnout Inventory and Job Content Questionnaire, were distributed to all participants. In total, 325 professionals (131 men and 194 women) were recruited. Burnout and work-related stress differed significantly according to several factors. Hospital size, gender, and age were the main contributory factors affecting at least two dimensions of the questionnaires. The more vulnerable group consisted of female therapists in their 20s at small- or medium-sized hospitals with low scores for quality of life. High levels of job stress and burnout were observed in female therapists in their 20s at small- or medium-sized hospitals. Hospitals and society should create suitable environments and understand the nature of therapists&rsquo, work to improve healthcare.

Unambiguous identification of fractionalized excitations in quantum spin liquids has been a long-standing issue in correlated topological phases. Conventional spectroscopic probes, such as the dynamical spin structure factor, can only detect composites of fractionalized excitations, leading to a broad continuum in energy. Lacking a clear signature in conventional probes has been the biggest obstacle in the field. In this work, we theoretically investigate what kinds of distinctive signatures of fractionalized excitations can be probed in two-dimensional nonlinear spectroscopy by considering the exactly solvable Kitaev spin liquids. We developed a new exercise method called the submandibular push exercise that can strengthen the suprahyoid muscle by inducing only the motion of the hyoid bone without neck flexion. In this study, we aimed to investigate and compare the muscle activity of the suprahyoid and infrahyoid muscles in the course of performing three different swallowing exercises. Twenty healthy participants and fifteen patients with dysphagia were recruited. Each participant consecutively performed three exercises: Shaker, CTAR, and submandibular push exercises. To investigate muscle activation, surface electromyography was performed on the suprahyoid, infrahyoid, and SCM muscles, during the exercises. Root mean square (RMS) was measured. Pairs trading is an investment strategy that exploits the short-term price difference (spread) between two co-moving stocks. Recently, pairs trading methods based on deep reinforcement learning have yielded promising results. These methods can be classified into two approaches: (1) indirectly determining trading actions based on trading and stop-loss boundaries and (2) directly determining trading actions based on the spread. In the former approach, the trading boundary is completely dependent on the stop-loss boundary, which is certainly not optimal. In the latter approach, there is a risk of significant loss because of the absence of a stop-loss boundary. To overcome the disadvantages of the two approaches, we propose a hybrid deep reinforcement learning method for pairs trading called HDRL-Trader, which employs two independent reinforcement learning networks; one for determining trading actions and the other for determining stop-loss boundaries. Furthermore, HDRL-Trader incorporates novel techniques, such as dimensionality reduction, clustering, regression, behavior cloning, prioritized experience replay, and dynamic delay, into its architecture. The performance of HDRL-Trader is compared with the state-of-the-art reinforcement learning methods for pairs trading (P-DDQN, PTDQN, and P-Trader). The experimental results for twenty stock pairs in the Standard & Poor’s 500 index show that HDRL-Trader achieves an average return rate of 82.4%, which is 25.7%P higher than that of the second-best method, and yields significantly positive return rates for all stock pairs.

The enhancement of the metal adsorption and remediation performance of biomass-based adsorbents is an important challenge in heavy metal removal processes. One of the most viable and practical approaches in accomplishing a high metal removal efficiency is the surface modification of natural polymer adsorbents with functional polymeric materials. In the present study, polyethylenimine (PEI)-modified silk sericin beads were fabricated. The PEI modification process was confirmed and analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS)-based elemental analysis. The Cr(VI) remediation capabilities of PEI-modified sericin beads were analyzed by testing Cr(VI) removal from contaminated water. The results show that the Cr(VI) removal capacity of PEI-modified sericin beads was 365.3 mg/g, which is significantly higher than that of pristine sericin beads (34.56 mg/g). During the Cr(VI) removal process, Cr(VI) adsorption and reduction to Cr(III) occurred simultaneously. The results herein reveal that the synthesized PEI-modified sericin beads are a promising material for Cr(VI) adsorption and detoxification of aqueous solution.

The goal of this study was to investigate the extracts of ellagic acid in Korean and Chinese black raspberries according to harvest time and extraction solvent. This study was also performed to establish a simple and reliable high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet (HPLC/UV) analytical method for the determination of ellagic acid for quality control and to establish baseline data of extracts of Rubus occidentalis (uRo) and Rubus chingii (uRc) fruits as healthy functional food ingredients. uRo and uRc were each extracted with 0%, 5%, 30%, and 70% ethanol. Among the extracts of these two varieties, the 5% ethanol extracts of uRo and uRc showed the highest contents of ellagic acid, 16.56 and 17.27 mg/g, respectively. The specificity was satisfied with retention time and photo-diode array (PDA) spectrum by analysis of ellagic acid using HPLC and comparison with a standard compound. Ellagic acid was validated for its limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantitation (LOQ), precision, and accuracy. It showed a high linearity in the calibration curve, with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.9999, and the LOD and LOQ values were 0.25 and 0.77 μg/mL, respectively. The results showed that R. occidentalis and R. chingii can be used simultaneously as healthy functional ingredients and natural medicines.

Dendropanax morbifera Léveille (Araliaceae) is an endemic species growing in the south-western part of South Korea and has been used in folk medicine and health functional food. Several studies have indicated that extract of D. morbifera (DP) has cytotoxic activities on a number of human cancers, such as, breast cancer, lung cancer, hepatoma, and chorioepithelioma. Recently, polyacetylene and triterpene compounds have been isolated from the DP and showed to have anti-complement activity. β-Amyrin, α-amyrin, dendropanoxide, and β-sitosterol are isolated from DP. However, its biological activities in cancer have not yet been clearly elucidated. In this study, we evaluated the anti-cancer activity of isolated triterpenoids from the DP leaves by measuring the levels of cytotoxicity against MCF-7 human breast cancer and A549 human lung cancer cells. Six triterpenoids were isolated from the n-hexane fraction of DP leaves along with the known compounds. β-amyrin (1), α-amyrin (2), olean-12-en-3,24 β-diol (3), dendropanoxide (4), β-sitosterol (5), and stigmasterol (6). Compound 3 and 6 were isolated from DP for the first time. Cytotoxic activities of six compounds were evaluated against two human cancer cell lines by using the MTT in vitro assay. Among them, five compounds (1, 2, 4, 5, and 6) showed moderate cytotoxic activities toward the tested cell lines, and were safe to normal cells. Western blot analysis showed a decreased expression of anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 and increased levels of pro-apoptotic protein Bax in MCF-7 and A549 cells treated by β-amyrin and α-amyrin. Flow cytometry analysis confirmed that five compounds (1, 2, 4, 5, and 6) treatment increased populations of sub-G1 (apoptosis) phase. The results of the present study revealed that triterpenoids from DP have the potential for further development as anticancer agents.
