The Radixact system (Accuray Inc., Sunnyvale, CA) is the latest platform release based on the TomoTherapy technology. The most recent system does not apply a leaf latency model correction after plan optimization to ensure the correct MLC leaf‐open time (LOT) agreement between the TPS and machine delivery. The MLC uses optical sensors to measure the delivered LOTs in real‐time and individual leaf‐specific latency corrections are made to ensure agreement. The aim of this study was to assess the performance of the Radixact MLC with leaf‐specific latency correction using the optical sensor's real‐time feedback. Specifically, the study statistically evaluated the MLC LOT errors observed from 290 plan‐specific quality assurance (PSQA) measurements. Repeatability testing was performed to quantify the uncertainty in the MLC feedback system delivery by analyzing > 1300 delivered treatment fractions throughout the course of radiotherapy. The clinical impact was evaluated by estimating the resulting dose difference in the patient targets due to the measured plan latencies. Our study measured an average plan latency equal to 2.0 ± 0.4 ms (0.6% ± 0.2%) for 290 PSQAs. Repeatability tests showed a mean standard deviation in plan latencies measuring 0.05 ms (0.02%). The deviation from the TPS in the mean target dose due to the plan latencies was estimated to be 0.0% ± 0.2% (range: ‐0.7%–1.1%). The current MLC system with real‐time optical sensor feedback is capable of accurately delivering the TPS‐generated sinograms. Repeatability test results showed that the system allows for high reliability in daily sinogram delivery. This paper presents a pioneering approach to bolstering network security and privacy by implementing chaotic optical communication with a hybrid optical feedback system (HOFS). The current baseline methods in network security are often less feasible for hybrid feedback systems, including limited robustness, compromised security, and synchronization challenges. Therefore, this paper proposes a hybrid approach to address these shortcomings by integrating the HOFS into chaotic optical communication systems (HOFS-COCS) to overcome the baseline challenges. This paper aims to improve network security while significantly maintaining efficient communication channels. Moreover, We designed two algorithms, one for chaotic maps generation and another for text encryption and decryption, to improve security in the hybrid feedback system. Our findings demonstrate through rigorous experimentation and analysis that the proposed (HOFS-COCS) method significantly improves network security by enabling reliable chaos generation, synchronization, and secure message transmission in chaotic optical communication systems. This research represents a significant advancement towards enhanced secrecy and synchronization in chaotic optical communication systems, promising a paradigm shift in network security protocols. In simulations of radiative‐convective equilibrium (RCE), and with sufficiently large domains, organized convection enhances top of atmosphere outgoing longwave radiation due to the reduced cloud coverage and drying of the mean climate state. As a consequence, estimates of climate sensitivity and cloud feedbacks may be affected. Here, we use a multi‐model ensemble configured in RCE to study the dependence of explicitly calculated cloud feedbacks on the existence of organized convection, the degree to which convection within a domain organizes, and the change in organized convection with warming sea surface temperature. We find that, when RCE simulations with organized convection are compared to RCE simulations without organized convection, the propensity for convection to organize in RCE causes cloud feedbacks to have larger magnitudes due to the inclusion of low clouds, accompanied by a much larger inter‐model spread. While we find no dependence of the cloud feedback on changes in organization with warming, models that are, on average, more organized have less positive, or even negative, cloud feedbacks. This is primarily due to changes in cloud optical depth in the shortwave, specifically high clouds thickening with warming in strongly organized domains. The shortwave cloud optical depth feedback also plays an important role in causing the tropical anvil cloud area feedback to be positive which is directly opposed to the expected negative or near zero cloud feedback found in prior work. Here, we look at how organized cloud systems associated with the tropics affect the processes that govern the climate response to warming. We find that strongly organized cloud systems reduce how strongly the Earth responds to warming. This is primarily associated with the changes in the optical properties of high clouds. Feedback-insensitive Quantum Dot (QD) comb lasers hold significant promise for integrated dense wavelength division multiplexing photonic systems due to their ability to generate multiple wavelengths and operate without bulky isolators, facilitating the development of high-density and large-scale photonic integrated circuits. In this study, we investigated the optical feedback (OFB) influence of the InAs/GaAs QD comb laser from various perspectives. Our findings reveal that the comb laser exhibits a stable locking region with consistent optical spectra across a range of OFB strengths (−45 to −10 dB). Furthermore, under a high OFB strength of −10 dB, there is a notable 40 dB suppression of relative intensity noise in the low-frequency range (below 1 GHz). Transmission experiments demonstrate clear eye openings at 25 Gbps using a bit pattern of 231-1 pseudorandom binary sequence. Remarkably, the bit error rates decrease by five orders of magnitude under −10 dB OFB. These results indicate the ultra-robustness of 100 GHz grid QD comb laser, which exhibits great transmission enhancement under a strong OFB of −10 dB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: In this paper, recent developments in non-destructive testing of 3D-printed ceramics and monitoring of additive manufacturing of ceramics are presented. Methods: In particular, we present the design and use of an inline midinfrared optical coherence tomography (MIR-OCT) system to evaluate printed and micro-structured specimens in lithography-based ceramic manufacturing (LCM). Results: The proposed system helps with the detection of microdefects (e.g., voids, inclusions, deformations) that are already present in green ceramic components, thereby reducing the energy and costs incurred. Discussion: The challenges during integration are discussed. To solve the problem of large feedback gain coefficient required for delay feature hiding in existing chaotic secure laser communication systems, a chaotic secure communication system based on all optical chaos injection double-loop electro-optical phase feedback loop was designed. Firstly, optical chaos was generated by all optical feedback and coupled to two electro-optic phase chaos feedback loops. Then, the nonlinear coupling of information and chaotic carrier was achieved through phase modulation to participate in the generation of chaotic carrier. Finally, the signal was decrypted by optical chaos synchronization at the detection end. The complexity, TDS hiding, synchronization, robustness and communication performance of chaotic signals in the system were analyzed by MATLAB software. The results demonstrate that the designed chaotic secure communication system has higher complexity and the TDS are completely hidden when the feedback coefficient is small.

Thin film lithium niobate (TFLN) has become a promising material platform for large scale photonic integrated circuits (PICs). As an indispensable component in PICs, on-chip electrically tunable narrow-linewidth lasers have attracted widespread attention in recent years due to their significant applications in high-speed optical communication, coherent detection, precision metrology, laser cooling, coherent transmission systems, light detection and ranging (LiDAR). However, research on electrically driven, high-power, and narrow-linewidth laser sources on TFLN platforms is still in its infancy. This review summarizes the recent progress on the narrow-linewidth compact laser sources boosted by hybrid TFLN/III-V semiconductor integration techniques, which will offer an alternative solution for on-chip high performance lasers for the future TFLN PIC industry and cutting-edge sciences. The review begins with a brief introduction of the current status of compact external cavity semiconductor lasers (ECSLs) and recently developed TFLN photonics. The following section presents various ECSLs based on TFLN photonic chips with different photonic structures to construct external cavity for on-chip optical feedback. Increasingly, artificial intelligent systems look to neuromorphic photonics for its speed and its low loss, high bandwidth interconnects. Silicon photonics has shown promise to enable the creation of large scale neural networks. Here, we propose a monolithic silicon opto-electronic resonator spiking neuron. Existing designs of photonic spiking neurons have difficulty scaling due to their dependence on certain nonlinear effects, materials, and devices. The design discussed here uses optical feedback from the transmission of a continuously pumped microring PN modulator to achieve excitable dynamics. It is cascadable, capable of operating at GHz speeds, and compatible with wavelength-division multiplexing schemes for linear weighting. It is a Class 2 excitable device via a subcritical Hopf bifurcation constructed from devices commonly found in many silicon photonic chip foundries. Silicon photonics can be used to create high-speed large-scale neuromorphic systems for artificial intelligent tasks. Lasing in the bad-cavity regime has promising applications in quantum precision measurement and frequency metrology due to the reduced sensitivity of the laser frequency to cavity-length fluctuations. Thus far, relevant studies have been mainly focused on conventional cavities whose finesse is high enough that the resonance linewidth is sufficiently narrow compared to the cavity's free spectral range, though still in the bad-cavity regime. However, lasing output from the cavity whose finesse is close to the limit of 2 has never been experimentally accessed. Here, we demonstrate an extremely bad-cavity laser, analyze the physical mechanisms limiting cavity finesse, and report on the worst-ever laser cavity with finesse reaching 2.01. The optical cavity has a reflectance close to zero and only provides weak optical feedback. The laser power can be as high as tens of μW and the spectral linewidth reaches a few kHz, over one thousand times narrower than the gain bandwidth. In addition, the measurement of cavity pulling reveals a pulling coefficient of 0.0148, the lowest value ever achieved for a continuous-wave laser. Our findings open up an unprecedentedly innovative perspective for future new ultra-stable lasers, which could possibly trigger future discoveries in optical clocks, cavity QED, continuous-wave superradiant laser, and explorations of quantum many-body physics. Random lasing (RL) is an optical phenomenon that arises from the combination of light amplification with optical feedback through multiple scattering events. In this paper, we present our investigations of RL generation from human blood samples. We tested mixtures of rhodamine B dye solutions with different blood components, including platelets, lymphocytes, erythrocytes, and whole blood. Intense coherent RL was obtained in all cases at relatively low pump thresholds, except for erythrocytes. We also studied the potential of RL signal analysis for biosensing applications using blood samples from healthy individuals and patients suffering from Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL). CLL is a blood disease characterized by a high count of lymphocytes with significant morphological changes. A statistical analysis of the RL spectra based on principal component and linear discriminant analyses was conducted for classification purposes. RL-based sample discrimination was conducted for whole blood, platelet, and lymphocyte samples, being especially successful (86.7%) for the latter. In situ measurements of water vapour isotopic composition in polar regions has provided needed constrains of post-deposition processes involved in the archiving of the climatic signal in ice core records. During polar winter, the temperatures, and thus the specific humidity, are so low that current commercial techniques are not able to measure the vapour isotopic composition with enough precision. Here, we make use of new developments in infrared spectroscopy and combine an optical-feedback frequency-stabilised laser source (OFFS technique) using a V-shaped cavity optical feedback (VCOF) cavity and a high-finesse cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) cavity to increase the signal-to-noise ratio while measuring absorption transitions of water isotopes. We present a laboratory infrared spectrometer leveraging all these techniques dedicated to measure water vapour isotopic composition at low humidity levels. At 400 ppmv , the instrument demonstrates a precision of 0.01 ‰ and 0.1 ‰ in δ18O and d-excess, respectively, for an integration time of 2 min. This set-up yields an isotopic composition precision below 1 ‰ at water mixing ratios down to 4 ppmv , which suggests an extrapolated precision in δ18O of 1.5 ‰ at 1 ppmv. Indeed, thanks to the stabilisation of the laser by the VCOF, the instrument exhibits extremely low drift and very high signal-to-noise ratio. We report a thin-film optical amplifier integrated on a fiber facet based on polymer-coated distributed feedback (DFB) microcavities, which are fabricated on a planar substrate and then transferred onto fiber tips by means of a flexible transfer technique. The amplified light directly couples into the fiber and is detected when coupled out at the other end after propagating along the fiber for about 20 cm. A prominently amplification factor of about 4.33 at 578.57 nm is achieved by sending supercontinuum pulses into the hundreds of micrometers' DFB microcavities along the normal direction, which is also the axis direction of the fiber. The random distortions of grating lines generated during the transfer process result in a larger amplification spectral range and a less strict polarization dependence for injected light. Benefitting from the device size of hundreds of micrometers and the ease of integration, polymer amplifiers based on DFB microcavities demonstrate significant application potentials in optical communication systems and miniaturized optical devices. We experimentally demonstrate a scheme for generating massively parallel and real-time physical random bits (PRBs) by using weak-resonant-cavity Fabry-Perot laser diodes (WRC-FPLDs) with optical feedback. By using external optical feedback to modify the nonlinear dynamic behavior of the longitudinal modes in WRC-FPLDs, the chaotic behavior of each channel can be induced under suitable feedback strength. By filtering these longitudinal modes, a real-time PRBs at 10 Gbits/s can be generated by using field programmable gate array (FPGA) board for the real-time post-processing of a single-channel chaotic signal. Considering the presence of up to 70 longitudinal modes within a broad spectral range exceeding 40 nm, each of these modes can be used to extract chaotic time sequences for random number generation. We experimentally investigate the dynamics characteristics of a two-state quantum dot laser (TSQDL) subject to optical feedback. Firstly, we inspect the impact of the temperature on the power-current characteristics of the ground state (GS) lasing and the excited state (ES) lasing in the TSQDL operating at free-running. The results demonstrate that with the decrease in the temperature, the threshold current for GS lasing ( I t h G S ) and the threshold current for ES lasing ( I t h E S ) decrease very slowly. There exists a current for GS quenching ( I Q G S ), which is gradually increased with the decrease in the temperature. After introducing optical feedback, the overall trend of change is similar to those obtained under free-running. Next, through inspecting the time series and power spectrum of the output from the TSQDL under optical feedback, the dynamical characteristics of the TSQDL are investigated under different feedback ratios, and diverse dynamical states including quasi-chaos pulse package, chaos state, regular pulse package, quasi-period two, quasi-regular pulsing, and chaos regular pulse package have been observed. Finally, for the TSQDL biased at three different cases: lower than I t h E S , slightly higher than I t h E S , and higher than I t h E S , nonlinear dynamic state evolutions with the increase in feedback ratio are inspected, respectively. The results show that, for the TSQDL biased at lower than I t h E S , it presents an evolution route of stable state—quasi-chaos pulse package—chaos state—regular pulse package. For the TSQDL biased at slightly larger than I t h E S , it presents an evolution route of stable state—quasi-regular pulsing—quasi-period two—chaos regular pulse package. For the TSQDL biased at higher than I t h E S , the TSQDL always behaves stable state within the range of feedback ratio that the experiment can achieve. In this paper a novel optical vector network analyzer (OVNA) utilizing a distributed feedback semiconductor optical amplifier (DFB-SOA) is introduced. The proposed OVNA is implemented by converting the transmission response of the optical device under test (ODUT) into the electrical domain. The main principle of the OVNA is predicated on the optical carrier restoration facilitated by the wavelength-selective amplification attribute of the DFB-SOA. The implemented OVNA effectively determined the transmission spectrum of an optical filter possessing a passband of 9-GHz bandwidth, achieving a commendable resolution of 25 MHz in the measurement process. The dynamic range of the OVNA can be broadened by adjust the driven current under the DFB-SOA. Additionally, the detection range of our system can be expanded through the utilization of broadband optoelectronic devices. In this paper, we propose using a chaotic system composed of nanolasers (NLs) as a physical entropy source. Combined with post-processing technologies, this system can produce high-quality physical random number sequences. We investigated the parameter range for achieving time-delay signature (TDS) concealment in the chaotic system. This study demonstrates that NLs exhibit noticeable TDS only under optical feedback. As mutual injection strength between the master NLs (MNLs) increases, the TDS of the MNLs is gradually suppressed until they are completely concealed. Compared to MNLs, the slave NL (SNL) exhibits better TDS suppression performance. Additionally, we investigated the chaotic and highly unpredictable regions of the SNL, demonstrating that high-quality chaotic signals can be produced over a wide range of parameters. Using TDS hidden and highly unpredictable chaotic signals as the source of random entropy, the effects of different post-processing techniques on random number extraction were compared. The results indicate that effective post-processing can enhance the unpredictability of the random sequence. As a new type of semiconductor laser, photonic crystal surface-emitting lasers (PCSELs) feature large-area single-mode surface emission with high power and high beam quality. The unique features of single-mode lasing over a large area active region are implemented by the in-plane optical feedback from two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal cavities. In larger PCSEL cavities, the lasing gain threshold becomes similar for the fundamental and high-order modes, which degrades single-mode operation. Here, we investigate the impact of carrier injection on PCSEL modes by controlling the injection area and the gain mode interaction. Optical and electrical simulations are carried out to calculate the gain mode overlapping factor for different p electrode designs. We fabricated 250 × 250 µm2 photonic crystal cavities with different p electrode sizes for injection area control. The PCSEL device characterization results show that devices with an electrode size to cavity side length ratio of 0.6 have the maximum slope efficiency and a lower lasing threshold with a single lobe beam profile. Such selective carrier injection can also provide gain-guided resonance in the PCSEL cavities and enhance optical gain in the fundamental mode while suppressing gain in the high-order modes. Background and purpose: By employing three surface‐guided radiotherapy (SGRT)‐assisted positioning methods, we conducted a prospective study of patients undergoing SGRT‐based deep inspiration breath‐hold (DIBH) radiotherapy using a Sentine/Catalys system. The aim of this study was to optimize the initial positioning workflow of SGRT‐DIBH radiotherapy for breast cancer. Materials and methods: A total of 124 patients were divided into three groups to conduct a prospective comparative study of the setup accuracy and efficiency for the daily initial setup of SGRT‐DIBH breast radiotherapy. Group A was subjected to skin marker plus SGRT verification, Group B underwent SGRT optical feedback plus auto‐positioning, and Group C was subjected to skin marker plus SGRT auto‐positioning. We evaluated setup accuracy and efficiency using cone‐beam computed tomography (CBCT) verification data and the total setup time. Results: In groups A, B, and C, the mean and standard deviation of the translational setup‐error vectors were small, with the highest values of the three directions observed in group A (2.4 ± 1.6, 2.9 ± 1.8, and 2.8 ± 2.1 mm). The rotational vectors in group B (1.8 ± 0.7°, 2.1 ± 0.8°, and 1.8 ± 0.7°) were significantly larger than those in groups A and C, and the Group C setup required the shortest amount of time, at 1.5 ± 0.3 min, while that of Group B took the longest time, at 2.6 ± 0.9 min. Conclusion: SGRT one‐key calibration was found to be more suitable when followed by skin marker/tattoo and in‐room laser positioning, establishing it as an optimal daily initial set‐up protocol for breast DIBH radiotherapy. The propagation of nonlinear waves, such as fires, weather fronts, and disease spread, has drawn attention since the dawn of time. A well-known example of nonlinear wave–fronts–in our daily lives is the domino waves, which propagate equally toward the left or right flank due to their reciprocal coupling. However, there are other situations where front propagation is not fully understood, such as bistable fronts with nonreciprocal coupling. These couplings are characterised by the fact that the energy emitter and receiver are not interchangeable. Here, we study the propagation of nonlinear waves in a bistable optical chain forced by nonreciprocal optical feedback. The spatiotemporal evolution and the front speeds are characterised as a function of the nonreciprocal coupling. We derive an equation to describe the interacting optical elements in a liquid crystal light valve with nonreciprocal optical feedback and compare the experimental results with numerical simulations of the coupled bistable systems. Understanding and harnessing nonlinear wave propagation has been a long-standing research topic in physics. In a controlled optical experiment, the authors realize a coupled bistable optical chain and study nonlinear wave propagation under nonreciprocal optical feedback, revealing unexpected behaviours of nonlinear wave propagation. To robustly and adaptively reconstruct displacement, we propose the amplitude modulation integral reconstruction method (AM-IRM) for displacement sensing in a self-mixing interferometry (SMI) system. By algebraically multiplying the SMI signal with a high-frequency sinusoidal carrier, the frequency spectrum of the signal is shifted to that of the carrier. This operation overcomes the issue of frequency blurring in low-frequency signals associated with continuous wavelet transform (CWT), enabling the precise extraction of the Doppler frequency of the SMI signal. Furthermore, the synchrosqueezing wavelet transform (SSWT) is utilized to enhance the frequency resolution of the Doppler signal. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a displacement reconstruction accuracy of 21.1 nm (0.89%). Additionally, our simulations demonstrated that this method can accurately reconstruct target displacement under the conditions of time-varying optical feedback intensity or a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 0 dB, with a maximum root mean square (RMS) error of 22.2 nm. These results highlight its applicability in real-world environments. This method eliminates the need to manually determine the window length for time–frequency conversion, calculate the parameters of the SMI system, or add additional optical devices, making it easy to implement. In this paper, an analysis of performance acceleration of an external laser source (ELS) model based polymer fiber gratings (PFGs) by reducing the turn-on delay time (TDelay) is successfully investigated numerically by optimizing model parameters. In contrast to all previous studies that relied either on approximate or experimental equations, the analysis was based on an exact numerical formula. The analysis is based on the investigation of the effect of diode injected current (Iin j), temperature (T), recombination rate coefficients (i.e. Anr, B, and C), and optical feedback (OFB) level. The cloud feedback may result in amplification or damping of Arctic warming. Two common techniques used to diagnose the top‐of‐the‐atmosphere cloud feedback are the Adjusted Cloud Radiative Effect (AdjCRE) method and the Cloud Radiative Kernel (CRK) method. We apply both to CMIP5 and CMIP6 model data, finding that the AdjCRE calculated Arctic shortwave cloud feedback is twice as correlated with sea ice loss in CMIP5, and four times in CMIP6, as the CRK method. We find that the CRK method produces Arctic all‐sky residual percentages exceeding 20% in 15 of 18 models. We use the CRK method to decompose the feedback in CMIP5 and CMIP6 finding that its median value changed from negative to positive driven by a less‐negative cloud optical depth feedback. Despite its lack of closure, we conclude that the CRK method is better suited for Arctic SW feedbacks as it is less impacted by surface albedo changes. The Arctic is warming faster than the rest of the globe, and one of the largest sources of uncertainty in its climate projections is the cloud feedback. There are two popular methods to calculate the cloud feedback: the Adjusted Cloud Radiative Effect technique, and the Cloud Radiative Kernel technique. In this paper we compare the two methods in a suite of climate models by considering the extent to which changes in Arctic sea ice impact the cloud feedbacks. From this analysis we conclude that the Cloud Radiative Kernel method is less affected by sea ice loss. We then apply the Cloud Radiative Kernel technique to data from the two most recent generations of global climate models to investigate how polar day Arctic cloud feedbacks have changed between these generations. We find that the median value of these Arctic feedbacks is slightly positive in the newest generation of models, a change from slightly negative in the previous generation that is largely fueled by a weakening of the feedback associated with changes in cloud optical depth. Nonlinear dynamics at mid-infrared wavelength is of interest for various applications but has been mainly limited to quantum cascade lasers so far. In this article, we show that interband cascade lasers can generate complex optical chaos with bandwidth in the GHz range and this outperforms the performances of quantum cascade laser chaos. The chaos nature of our signal is confirmed by a thorough time-series analysis. Modeling of the semiconductor laser under short-cavity external optical feedback allows confirming the high bias chaos operation that we observe experimentally. The study of extreme events (EEs) in photonics has expanded significantly due to straightforward implementation conditions. EEs have not been discussed systematically, to the best of our knowledge, in the chaotic dynamics of a Fabry–Perot laser with optical feedback, so we address this in the current contribution. Herein, we not only find EEs in all modes but also divide the EEs in total output into two categories for further discussion. The two types of EEs have similar statistical features to conventional rogue waves. The occurrence probability of EEs undergoes a saturation effect as the feedback strength increases. Additionally, we analyze the influence of feedback strength, feedback delay, and pump current on the probability of EEs defined by two criteria of EEs and find similar trends. This paper presents a chaotic system based on novel semiconductor nanolasers (NLs), systematically analyzing its chaotic region and investigating the influence of key parameters on the unpredictability of chaotic output. This study found that under optical feedback conditions, NLs generate chaos across a wide range of feedback parameters, with the highly unpredictable region completely overlapping with the chaotic region. Further injection into the slave lasers enhances the chaotic output, expanding the range of unpredictability. Additionally, we analyzed the impact of internal parameter mismatch on the complexity of chaotic signals and found it to be similar to the scenario when parameters are matched. Using this chaotic system as an entropy source, we constructed a random number generator (RNG) and investigated the effects of internal parameters mismatch and differences in the injection parameters on the generator's performance. The simulation results show that the RNG performs well under different parameter settings, and the generated random sequences pass all random number tests successfully. Therefore, this chaotic system can yield a high-complexity chaotic light source with appropriate parameter selection, and when combined with effective post-processing, it can generate high-quality random numbers. Precision beam pointing plays a critical role in free-space optical communications terminals in uplink, downlink and inter-satellite link scenarios. Among the various methods of beam steering, the use of fast steering mirrors (FSM) is widely adopted, with many commercial solutions employing diverse technologies, particularly focusing on small, high-bandwidth mirrors. This paper introduces a method using lightweight, commercial off-the-shelf components to construct a custom closed-loop steering mirror platform, suitable for mirror apertures exceeding 100 mm. The approach involves integrating optical encoders into two off-the-shelf open-loop actuators. These encoders read the signal reflected on purposefully diamond-machined knurled screw knobs, providing maximum contrast between light and dark lines. The resulting steering mirror has the potential to complement or replace FSM in applications requiring a larger stroke, at the expense of motion speed. In the presented setup, the mirror tilt resolution achieved based on the encoder closed-loop signal feedback is 45 μ rad, with a mean slew rate of 1.5 mrad/s. Importantly, the steering assembly is self-locking, requiring no power to maintain a steady pointing angle. Using the mirror to actively correct for a constantly moving incoming beam, a 5-fold increase in concentration of the beam spot on the center of the detector was obtained compared to a fixed position mirror, demonstrating the mirrors ability to correct for satellite platform jitter and drift. Common-signal-induced synchronization of semiconductor lasers with optical feedback inspired a promising physical-layer key distribution with information-theoretic security and potential in high rate. A significant challenge is the requirement to shorten the synchronization recovery time for increasing the key rate without sacrificing the operation parameter space for security. Here, open-loop synchronization of wavelength-tunable multi-section distributed Bragg reflector lasers is proposed as a solution for physical-layer key distribution. Experiments show that the synchronization is sensitive to two operation parameters, i.e., currents of grating section and phase section. Furthermore, fast wavelength-shift keying synchronization can be achieved by direct modulation on one of the two currents. The synchronization recovery time is shortened by one order of magnitude compared to close-loop synchronization. An experimental implementation is demonstrated with a final key rate of 5.98 Mbit/s over 160 km optical fiber distance. It is thus believed that fast-tunable multi-section semiconductor lasers open a new avenue for a high-rate physical-layer key distribution using laser synchronization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we report an improved method of coherent sensing through the use of a generalized phase-stepping algorithm to extract magnitude and phase information from interferometric fringes acquired by laser feedback interferometry (LFI). Our approach allows for significantly reduced optical sampling and acquisition times whilst also avoiding the need for fitting to complex models of lasers under optical feedback in post-processing. We investigate theoretically the applicability of this method under different levels of optical feedback, different laser parameters, and for different sampling conditions. We furthermore validate its use experimentally for LFI-based sensing using a terahertz (THz)-frequency laser in both far-field and near-field sensing configurations. Finally we demonstrate our approach for two-dimensional nanoscale imaging of the out-of-plane field supported by individual micro-resonators at THz frequencies. Our results show that fully coherent sensing can be achieved reliably with as little as 4 sampling points per imaging pixel, opening up opportunities for fast coherent sensing not only at THz frequencies but across the visible and infra-red spectrum. Ever since the mid-1960's, locking the phases of modes enabled the generation of laser pulses of duration limited only by the uncertainty principle, opening the field of ultrafast science. In contrast to conventional lasers, mode spacing in random lasers is ill-defined because optical feedback comes from scattering centres at random positions, making it hard to use mode locking in transform limited pulse generation. Here the generation of sub-nanosecond transform-limited pulses from a mode-locked random fibre laser is reported. Rayleigh backscattering from decimetre-long sections of telecom fibre serves as laser feedback, providing narrow spectral selectivity to the Fourier limit. The laser is adjustable in pulse duration (0.34–20 ns), repetition rate (0.714–1.22 MHz) and can be temperature tuned. The high spectral-efficiency pulses are applied in distributed temperature sensing with 9.0 cm and 3.3 × 10−3 K resolution, exemplifying how the results can drive advances in the fields of spectroscopy, telecommunications, and sensing. Pulses of adjustable duration are generated by a mode-locked random fibre laser that can drive advances in sensing. High-quality silicon-based lasers are necessary to achieve full integration of photonic and electronic circuits. Monolithic integration of III–Vmicron lasers on silicon by means of the aspect ratio trapping (ART) method is a promising solution. To obtain sufficient optical feedback to excite the laser without introducing complex fabricating processes, we have designed a high-order surface grating on micron lasers which was epitaxially grown by the ART method and can be fabricated by common UV lithography. The performance of the grating was analyzed by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method and eigenmode expansion (EME) solver. After simulation optimization, the etching depth was set to 0.6 μm to obtain proper reflection. The width of the slots and the slot spacing were selected to be 1.12 μm and 5.59 μm, respectively. Finally, we obtained results of 4% reflectance and 82% transmittance at a 1.55 μm wavelength at 24 periods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We experimentally investigate the dynamics characteristics of a two-state quantum dot laser (TSQDL) subject to optical feedback. Firstly, we inspect the impact of the temperature on the power-current characteristics of the ground state (GS) lasing and the excited state (ES) lasing in the TSQDL operating at free-running. The results demonstrate that with the decrease in the temperature, the threshold current for GS lasing (IthGS) and the threshold current for ES lasing (IthES) decrease very slowly. There exists a current for GS quenching (IQGS), which is gradually increased with the decrease in the temperature. After introducing optical feedback, the overall trend of change is similar to those obtained under free-running. Next, through inspecting the time series and power spectrum of the output from the TSQDL under optical feedback, the dynamical characteristics of the TSQDL are investigated under different feedback ratios, and diverse dynamical states including quasi-chaos pulse package, chaos state, regular pulse package, quasi-period two, quasi-regular pulsing, and chaos regular pulse package have been observed. Finally, for the TSQDL biased at three different cases: lower than IthES, slightly higher than IthES, and higher than IthES, nonlinear dynamic state evolutions with the increase in feedback ratio are inspected, respectively. The results show that, for the TSQDL biased at lower than IthES, it presents an evolution route of stable state—quasi-chaos pulse package—chaos state—regular pulse package. For the TSQDL biased at slightly larger than IthES, it presents an evolution route of stable state—quasi-regular pulsing—quasi-period two—chaos regular pulse package. For the TSQDL biased at higher than IthES, the TSQDL always behaves stable state within the range of feedback ratio that the experiment can achieve. However, with the increase in optical feedback ratio, the number of longitudinal modes for GS lasing and ES lasing are changed.

Due to its benefits in high stability and ability to speed up information processing in machine learning applications, quantum dot light-emitting diode (QDLED) has received a lot of attention for the next generation of local communication applications. Some optical applications for reinforcement learning in computers are disgusted by the mode-competition dynamics of multimode semiconductor QDLEDs. The chaotic modes-competition dynamics in a multimode semiconductor QDLED with optical feedback (OFB) are quantitatively assessed in this study.We can manage the chaotic mode-competition dynamics among the longitudinal modes by inserting an external optical signal into some of them. The dominant-mode ratio for the injected mode increases along with the increase in feedback strength. We discover that, as a result of the various OFB phases, the characteristics of the dominant mode ratio in terms of OFB intensity vary among the modes. We also assess the connection between the photon dynamic range and the region for side mode suppression ratio. The OFB range does not correlate to the region for the big dominant mode ratio. The intricate dynamics of mode competition in multimode semiconductor QDLEDs with OFB are the cause of this disparity. When the modulation frequency corresponded with a rational number of the optical feedback's round trip duration, the chaotic mode-competition dynamics remained high.

In this article, the dependence of the operation states, dynamics, and noise of laser diodes (LD) with external optical feedback (OFB) on the linewidth enhancement factor (LEF) and spontaneous emission factor (SEF) have been investigated. We systematically studied the classification of the laser dynamics based on the bifurcation diagrams (BDs) of the photon numbers and the relative intensity noise (RIN) spectra at different levels of OFB, LEF, and SEF. The simulation results show that variations in the LEF and SEF lead to significant changes in the laser operation states and dynamics, which vary from continuous wave (CW), pulsation, and chaos states. The Hopf bifurcation (HB) point moves toward increasing/decreasing OFB intensity by increasing/decreasing the SEF/LEF. The laser state becomes more stable through a wide range of OFB by increasing/decreasing the SEF/LEF. The RIN reduces the solitary laser noise level at higher/lower values of SEF/LEF when the laser is operated under OFB. The relaxation frequency of the laser shifts toward higher values by increasing/decreasing the SEF/LEF through most laser states, and the RIN peak is higher than solitary laser noise by four orders of magnitude, especially in the pulsation regions. In the low-frequency region, the RIN is enhanced from one to two orders by reducing the LEF and SEF through laser states. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Semiconductor lasers with optical feedback are stochastic nonlinear systems that can display complex dynamics and abrupt changes when their operation conditions change. Even very small changes can lead to large variations in the spatial and spectral properties of the laser emission. This makes a semiconductor laser with feedback an ideal system for conducting controlled experiments to test data analysis tools to detect and characterize transitions. Here, we identify feedback-induced transitions by analyzing speckle patterns that are generated after the laser light propagates in an optical fiber. Speckle patterns result from the interference of multiple modes, and their statistical properties are understood, but a direct mathematical model does not exist. Here we show the versatility of the correlation length and the permutation entropy as measures for characterizing speckle patterns. Combining entropy and correlation analysis with speckle contrast analysis, we uncover changes that occur when the laser current increases from below to well above the threshold, which unveils the effects of optical feedback on the coherence of the laser emission. An investigation into the dynamic states and relative intensity noise of laser diodes subjected to double optical feedback has been conducted. We employed modified and improved time-delay rate equations to account for double external optical feedback. The dynamic states and noise of lasers will be investigated using bifurcation diagrams of the output photon number, its temporal variations, and the intensity noise of the laser. This analysis considers feedback strengths due to the double external cavity and their spacing from the front facet of the laser with and without phase due to feedback. The results reveal that considering phase causes significant variations in laser intensity and a phase shift in the temporal variations of the laser output. This results in relative intensity noise suppression and a frequency shift in the intensity noise spectrum. These findings represent new contributions to our understanding of the reliance of lasing frequency shift on the phase due to feedback, regardless of whether feedback originates from a single or double external cavity. We investigated the optimal conditions corresponding to stable dynamic states of the laser with the lowest noise level. Additionally, we identified conditions that result in chaotic dynamics, where the spectrum does not convey information about the laser system. The interaction of light with biological tissues is an intriguing area of research that has led to the development of numerous techniques and technologies. The randomness inherent in biological tissues can trap light through multiple scattering events and provide optical feedback to generate random lasing emission. The emerging random lasing signals carry sensitive information about the scattering dynamics of the medium, which can help in identifying abnormalities in tissues, while simultaneously functioning as an illumination source for imaging. The early detection and imaging of tumor regions are crucial for the successful treatment of cancer, which is one of the major causes of mortality worldwide. In this paper, a bimodal spectroscopic and imaging system, capable of identifying and imaging tumor polyps as small as 1 mm2, is proposed and illustrated using a phantom sample for the early diagnosis of tumor growth. The far-field imaging capabilities of the developed system can enable non-contact in vivo inspections. The integration of random lasing principles with sensing and imaging modalities has the potential to provide an efficient, minimally invasive, and cost-effective means of early detection and treatment of various diseases, including cancer. In situ measurements of water vapour isotopic composition in Polar Regions has provided needed constrains of post-deposition processes involved in the archiving of the climatic signal in ice core records. During polar winter, the temperatures are so low that current commercial techniques are not able to measure the vapour isotopic composition with enough precision. Here, we make use of new developments in infrared spectroscopy and combine an optical feedback frequency stabilised laser source (OFFS technique) using a V-shaped optical cavity (VCOF) and a high-finesse cavity ring down cavity (CRDS) which yield sufficient precision to measure isotopic composition at water mixing ratios down to 1 ppmv. Indeed, thanks to the stabilisation of the laser by the VCOF, the instrument suffers extremely low drift and very high signal to noise ratio. Using new constrains on the fitting technique, the instrument is additionally not hindered by a large isotope-humidity response which low humidity can create extensive biases on commercial instruments. A novel method for the generation of an optical frequency comb (OFC) is presented. The proposed approach uses a laser diode with optical feedback and operating at a specific nonlinear dynamic state named periodic window. In this case, the laser spectrum exhibits a feature with a series of discrete, equally spaced frequency components, and the repetition rate can be flexibly adjusted by varying the system parameters (e.g., external cavity length), which can provide many potential applications. As an application example, a dual-OFC system for distance measurement is presented. This study investigates the interaction between frequency combs and optical feedback effects in Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs). The theoretical analysis reveals new phenomena arising from the interplay between comb generation and feedback. By considering the bias current corresponding to free-running single mode emission, the introduction of optical feedback can trigger the generation of frequency combs, including both fundamental and harmonic combs. This presents opportunities to extend the comb region and generate harmonic frequency combs with different orders through optimization of external cavity parameters, such as losses and length. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that optical feedback can selectively tune the harmonic order of a pre-existing free-running comb by adjusting the external cavity length, particularly for feedback ratios around 1%, which are readily achievable in experimental setups. Under strong feedback conditions (Acket parameter C > 4.6), mixed states emerge, displaying the features of both laser and external cavity dynamics. While this study is predominantly centered on terahertz QCLs, we have also confirmed that the described phenomena occur when utilizing mid-infrared QCL parameters. This work establishes a connection between comb technology and the utilization of optical feedback, providing new avenues for exploration and advancement in the field. In fact, the novel reported phenomena open a pathway toward new methodologies across various domains, such as the design of tunable comb sources, hyperspectral imaging, multi-mode coherent sensing, and multi-channel communication. In contribution 2, a precision 3D measurement instrument integrating multiple laser range sensors was designed, which fuses the information of multiple redundant laser range sensors to obtain the coordinates of a 3D position. Laser-based measurement and sensing technology has been paid more and more attention by academia and industry because of its incomparable advantages, such as high sensitivity, fast response, and no contact. In contribution 8, an evaluation method based on fitting planes was proposed to evaluate laser plane attitude and determine the degree of laser coplanarity effectively. Using the method in this study, the laser plane attitude can be quantified and accurately assessed on both sides, effectively resolving the problem with traditional methods that can only assess the laser plane attitude qualitatively and roughly, thereby providing a solid foundation for calibration and error correction of the measurement system. Organic semiconductor lasers have shown great application potential in various fields, such as low-cost sensing, high-performance lighting and display, and lab-on-a-chip devices. Since the introduction of organic lasers in the 1960s, research on semiconductor laser devices has expanded to include various materials and structures. The organic laser has attracted much attention due to its wide range of emission spectrum and simple synthesis and processing. Researchers constantly pursue the goal of using organic semiconductors to fabricate low-threshold thin-film organic laser devices while retaining the characteristics of a wide luminescence spectrum of organic materials, simple and portable structure, and low cost. However, organic semiconductor lasers face challenges due to material stability under optical pumping and large optical losses under electrical pumping, making commercialization difficult. Many scholars have put great efforts into enhancing the performance of materials and optimizing the structure to minimize the threshold of organic semiconductor lasers. Herein, based on the basic principles of organic lasers, the main factors affecting the excitation threshold are summarized. A comprehensive analysis of the relevant factors and threshold conditions is performed, considering both positive and negative aspects of modal gain and modal loss that need to be addressed. We expect to provide a wide range of ideas for reducing the threshold of organic lasers and offer theoretical guidance for the practical industrial production of organic lasers. This paper presents a self-coherent optical feedback system that achieves resonance between the external cavity mode and the relaxation oscillation frequency of distributed feedback (DFB) laser and the repetition frequency of Fabry–Perot (FP) laser, all in an effort to achieve optical feedback self-locking. Results using this system show that for FP lasers, feedback is able to reduce the 3 dB radio frequency linewidth from 2 MHz to 600 kHz. In the case of DFB lasers, an electric frequency comb with an external cavity repetition rate of 17.25 MHz is achieved. When theoretically investigating the nonlinear dynamics of quantum dot lasers (QDLs), the parameter value of the electron escape rate (Ce) is sometimes approximated to zero to simplify the calculation. However, the value of Ce is dependent on the energy interval between the ground state (GS) and the excited state (ES) in the conduction band and is affected by the operation temperature. As a result, such simplified approximation treatments may lead to inaccurate results. In this study, after considering the effect of Ce, we investigate the nonlinear dynamics of QDLs with and without optical feedback based on the asymmetric electron-hole carrier rate equation model. The simulation results show that without optical feedback, the lasing conditions for ES and GS in free-running QDLs are dependent on the value of Ce. A larger Ce is more helpful for the ES emission, and the GS emission will stop lasing if Ce is large enough. Through analyzing the dynamical characteristics of GS and ES in QDLs with optical feedback under different Ce values, it can be found that the dynamical characteristics are strongly correlative with Ce. Fiber fault detection is crucial for maintaining the quality of optical communication, especially in well-established optical access networks with extended distances and a growing number of subscribers. However, the increasing insertion loss in fiber links presents challenges for traditional fault-detection methods in capturing fault echoes. To overcome these limitations, we propose a modulation-enhanced external-cavity-resonant-frequency method that utilizes a laser for fault echo reception, providing improved sensitivity compared to traditional photodetector-based methods. Our previous work focused on analyzing key parameters, such as sensitivity and spatial resolution, but did not consider practical aspects of selecting optimal modulation parameters. In this study, we develop a model based on Lang–Kobayashi rate equations for current-modulated optical feedback lasers and validate it through experimental investigations. Our findings reveal that optimal detection performance is achieved with a modulation depth of 0.048, a frequency sweeping range of 0.6 times the laser relaxation oscillation frequency, and a frequency sweeping step of 0.1 times the external cavity resonant frequency. Recent research results show that great progress has been made in improving the generation rate of physical random numbers. However, there are still some defects such as complex generation process and large volume. To solve these problems, this paper theoretically proposes a scheme for generating random numbers using mode hopping of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) with optical feedback. The VCSEL is perturbed by the optical feedback to generate the mode hopping. The square wave signal then modulates the injection current, periodically restarts the VCSEL to switch from the non-emitting state to the mode hopping state, and finally outputs a random pulse sequence to realize the random number generation. The results of this paper show that unbiased random numbers with verified randomness can be generated continuously at a rate of the order of Gbit/s. Our scheme eliminates the need for optoelectronic conversion and post-processing operations, simplifing the current random number generation structure, which has the potential to realize a low-cost photonic integrated random number generator.

In this article, we propose and numerically demonstrate a novel dual-phase modulated time-delay signature (TDS) concealed communication system. The proposed system addresses the fatal disadvantage of conventional electro-optic chaotic systems in that TDS is vulnerable to detection. Combined with the dispersive devices ahead, which significantly expands the complexity of the signal, the scheme perturbs the transmitted data with the mutual injection of the feedforward and feedback branches in the phase, strengthening the nonlinear effect of the system considerably. In addition, the key space of the system against illegal users’ exhaustive attack within reasonable parameters reaches 1019, which is 14 orders of magnitude larger than that of the classical electro-optic system. A confidential 32 G/s OOK signal was transmitted over 100 km and successfully recovered. Numerical results demonstrate that the chaotic system can tolerate minor parameter mismatches which are controllable in practice, proving that the system can be used for secure communication.

Palpation is a simple but effective method to distinguish tumors from healthy tissues. The development of miniaturized tactile sensors embedded on endoscopic or robotic devices is key to achieving precise palpation diagnosis and subsequent timely treatment. This paper reports on the fabrication and characterization of a novel tactile sensor with mechanical flexibility and optical transparency that can be easily mounted on soft surgical endoscopes and robotics. By utilizing the pneumatic sensing mechanism, the sensor offers a high sensitivity of 1.25 mbar and negligible hysteresis, enabling the detection of phantom tissues with different stiffnesses ranging from 0 to 2.5 MPa. Our configuration, combining pneumatic sensing and hydraulic actuating, also eliminates electrical wiring from the functional elements located at the robot end-effector, thereby enhancing the system safety. The optical transparency path in the sensors together with its mechanical sensing capability open interesting possibilities in the early detection of solid tumor as well as in the development of all-in-one soft surgical robots that can perform visual/mechanical feedback and optical therapy.
