We present a reassessment of the genus Barclaya. This includes description, typification and distribution in tropical SE Asia of the eight species recognized. The two long time known and accepted species, B. longifolia and B. motleyi. The identity of B. rotundifolia has been clarified. Two species, B. hirta and B. kunstleri have been resurrected. Additionally, three new species, B. panchorensis, B. rugosa and B. wellyi are described. A chromosome number of 2n = 36 has been ascertained for all studied Barclaya species. The habitats are described, and their conservation status given. For each species, its habitat is described, and its conservation status given. Finally, six of the species have been found to be night-blooming.

A new diploid variety, Cryptocoryne cordata var. wellyi from the Riau Province in Sumatera is described. Three interspecific natural hybrids are also described: the diploid C. ×ardyi, the triploid C. ×jambiensis and the tetraploid C. ×zukalii nothovar. sumateraensis, of which the tetraploid hybrid involves C. cordata var. diderici as one parent. The hybrids are sterile but propagate vegetatively, forming large stands. A key to the Cryptocoryne taxa of Sumatera is provided.

A new species, Cryptocoryne aura Wongso & Ipor, from West Kalimantan, Indonesia, is described and illustrated. It differs from other Cryptocoryne species primarily by having a transparent, ciliate membrane along the leaf margin and a short spathe with a yellow, forward-twisted limb. It has a chromosome number of 2n = 26, which has not hitherto been recorded within the genus. The morphology of the germinating seed is unique within the genus, the embryo emerging c. ⅓ from the distal end of the seed with 3(or 4) plumulary processes (prophylls). Citation: Wongso S., Ipor I. The South-East Asian genus Cryptocoryne has been shown to hybridize more frequently than expected. Data are presented on the known naturally occurring hybrids including information on their discovery, naming, and recognition as hybrids. Many artificial hybrids produced over the years indicate that there are only relatively few barriers to crossing. A heterosis effect is prevalent in many encountered Cryptocoryne hybrids. Vegetative propagation is clearly an advantage in the establishment of hybrid populations and also in detecting the hybrids, since inferior hybrids have disappeared naturally. Our results on Cryptocoryne also suggest that when the South-East Asian floras become as well-known as temperate ones, the number of natural hybrids will be similar to those presently known from temperate regions.

Cryptocoryne versteegii Engl. var. versteegii is a plant from the inner mangrove with short, almost triangular, stiff, rather upright leaves, whereas var. jayaensis from fresh water has rather flaccid leaves, which are 2–4 times as long as those of var. versteegii.

Five new species and one new variety of Cryptocoryne (Araceae) from the Schwaner mountains (W Kalimantan) and the Muller mountains (W and C Kalimantan) are described. These new taxa makes a very interesting and unique addition to the genus Cryptocoryne. Two of the species have surprisingly low chromosome numbers: C. bastmeijeri with 2n = 14 and C. isae with 2n = 10. Metabolite profiles of plant organs and their in vitro cultures of Justicia gendarussa have been studied by using Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography-Quadrupole Time-of-Flight-Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-Qtof-MS). Samples of leaves, stems, roots, and shoot cultures showed similar patterns of metabolites, while samples of root cultures gave very different profiles. Concentrations of secondary metabolites in shoot cultures were relatively low compared to those in the leaves and roots of the plants. The results suggested that secondary metabolites in J. gendarussa were biosynthetized in the leaves, then transported to the roots.
