Prostate cancer, a growing global health concern, necessitates precise diagnostic tools, with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) offering high-resolution soft tissue imaging that significantly enhances diagnostic accuracy. Recent advancements in explainable AI and representation learning have significantly improved prostate cancer diagnosis by enabling automated and precise lesion classification. However, existing explainable AI methods, particularly those based on frameworks like generative adversarial networks (GANs), are predominantly developed for natural image generation, and their application to medical imaging often leads to suboptimal performance due to the unique characteristics and complexity of medical image. To address these challenges, our paper introduces three key contributions. First, we propose ProjectedEx, a generative framework that provides interpretable, multi-attribute explanations, effectively linking medical image features to classifier decisions. Second, we enhance the encoder module by incorporating feature pyramids, which enables multiscale feedback to refine the latent space and improves the quality of generated explanations. Additionally, we conduct comprehensive experiments on both the generator and classifier, demonstrating the clinical relevance and effectiveness of ProjectedEx in enhancing interpretability and supporting the adoption of AI in medical settings. Medical vision-and-language models (MVLMs) have attracted substantial interest due to their capability to offer a natural language interface for interpreting complex medical data. Their applications are versatile and have the potential to improve diagnostic accuracy and decision-making for individual patients while also contributing to enhanced public health monitoring, disease surveillance, and policy-making through more efficient analysis of large data sets. MVLMS integrate natural language processing with medical images to enable a more comprehensive and contextual understanding of medical images alongside their corresponding textual information. Unlike general vision-and-language models trained on diverse, non-specialized datasets, MVLMs are purpose-built for the medical domain, automatically extracting and interpreting critical information from medical images and textual reports to support clinical decision-making. Popular clinical applications of MVLMs include automated medical report generation, medical visual question answering, medical multimodal segmentation, diagnosis and prognosis and medical image-text retrieval. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of MVLMs and the various medical tasks to which they have been applied. We conduct a detailed analysis of various vision-and-language model architectures, focusing on their distinct strategies for cross-modal integration/exploitation of medical visual and textual features. We also examine the datasets used for these tasks and compare the performance of different models based on standardized evaluation metrics. Furthermore, we highlight potential challenges and summarize future research trends and directions. We discuss in this article the creation and organization of a national core facility for bioimage analysis, based on a distributed team. F-BIAS federates bioimage analysts across France and relies on them to deliver services to the researchers of this territory. The main challenge in implementing this structure is to provide significant scientific value to its members, thereby encouraging their active participation and persuading their respective host teams to support their involvement. F-BIAS accomplished this by creating a professional network that mitigates the negative effects of isolation experienced by its members, who are often the sole bioimage analyst within their local teams, and fosters the development of their technical skills. In a second phase we capitalized on F-BIAS to create a virtual, remotely-operating core facility for bioimage analysis, offering consultations and collaborative project services to the scientific community of France. The services are organized so that they also contribute to the technical proficiency of the analysts. To promote the creation of similar structures, we present and discuss here the organization of this nationally distributed bioimage analysis service core, highlighting successes and challenges.

The integration of vision-language models such as CLIP and Concept Bottleneck Models (CBMs) offers a promising approach to explaining deep neural network (DNN) decisions using concepts understandable by humans, addressing the black-box concern of DNNs. While CLIP provides both explainability and zero-shot classification capability, its pre-training on generic image and text data may limit its classification accuracy and applicability to medical image diagnostic tasks, creating a transfer learning problem. To maintain explainability and address transfer learning needs, CBM methods commonly design post-processing modules after the bottleneck module. However, this way has been ineffective. This paper takes an unconventional approach by re-examining the CBM framework through the lens of its geometrical representation as a simple linear classification system. The analysis uncovers that post-CBM fine-tuning modules merely rescale and shift the classification outcome of the system, failing to fully leverage the system's learning potential. We introduce an adaptive module strategically positioned between CLIP and CBM to bridge the gap between source and downstream domains. This simple yet effective approach enhances classification performance while preserving the explainability afforded by the framework. Unpaired medical image synthesis aims to provide complementary information for an accurate clinical diagnostics, and address challenges in obtaining aligned multi-modal medical scans. Transformer-based models excel in imaging translation tasks thanks to their ability to capture long-range dependencies. Although effective in supervised training settings, their performance falters in unpaired image synthesis, particularly in synthesizing structural details. This paper empirically demonstrates that, lacking strong inductive biases, Transformer can converge to non-optimal solutions in the absence of paired data. To address this, we introduce UNet Structured Transformer (UNest), a novel architecture incorporating structural inductive biases for unpaired medical image synthesis. We leverage the foundational Segment-Anything Model to precisely extract the foreground structure and perform structural attention within the main anatomy. This guides the model to learn key anatomical regions, thus improving structural synthesis under the lack of supervision in unpaired training. Evaluated on two public datasets, spanning three modalities, i.e., MR, CT, and PET, UNest improves recent methods by up to 19.30% across six medical image synthesis tasks. Traffic predictions play a crucial role in intelligent transportation systems. The rapid development of IoT devices allows us to collect different kinds of data with high correlations to traffic predictions, fostering the development of efficient multi-modal traffic prediction models. Until now, there are few studies focusing on utilizing advantages of multi-modal data for traffic predictions. In this paper, we introduce a novel temporal attentive cross-modality transformer model for long-term traffic predictions, namely xMTrans, with capability of exploring the temporal correlations between the data of two modalities: one target modality (for prediction, e.g., traffic congestion) and one support modality (e.g., people flow). We conducted extensive experiments to evaluate our proposed model on traffic congestion and taxi demand predictions using real-world datasets. The results showed the superiority of xMTrans against recent state-of-the-art methods on long-term traffic predictions. The oxygen saturation level in the blood (SaO2) is crucial for health, particularly in relation to sleep-related breathing disorders. However, continuous monitoring of SaO2 is time-consuming and highly variable depending on patients' conditions. Recently, optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) has shown promising development in rapidly and effectively screening eye-related lesions, offering the potential for diagnosing sleep-related disorders. To bridge this gap, our paper presents three key contributions. Firstly, we propose JointViT, a novel model based on the Vision Transformer architecture, incorporating a joint loss function for supervision. Secondly, we introduce a balancing augmentation technique during data preprocessing to improve the model's performance, particularly on the long-tail distribution within the OCTA dataset. Lastly, through comprehensive experiments on the OCTA dataset, our proposed method significantly outperforms other state-of-the-art methods, achieving improvements of up to 12.28% in overall accuracy. Current vision-language pre-training (VLP) methodologies predominantly depend on paired image-text datasets, a resource that is challenging to acquire in radiology due to privacy considerations and labelling complexities. Data augmentation provides a practical solution to overcome the issue of data scarcity, however, most augmentation methods exhibit a limited focus, prioritising either image or text augmentation exclusively. Acknowledging this limitation, our objective is to devise a framework capable of concurrently augmenting medical image and text data. We design a Pairwise Augmentation (PairAug) approach that contains an Inter-patient Augmentation (InterAug) branch and an Intra-patient Augmentation (IntraAug) branch. Specifically, the InterAug branch of our approach generates radiology images using synthesised yet plausible reports derived from a Large Language Model (LLM). The generated pairs can be considered a collection of new patient cases since they are artificially created and may not exist in the original dataset. In contrast, the IntraAug branch uses newly generated reports to manipulate images. This process allows us to create new paired data for each individual with diverse medical conditions. Our extensive experiments on various downstream tasks covering medical image classification zero-shot and fine-tuning analysis demonstrate that our PairAug, concurrently expanding both image and text data, substantially outperforms image-/text-only expansion baselines and advanced medical VLP baselines. Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) are widely used for visual classification tasks, but their complex computation process and black-box nature hinder decision transparency and interpretability. Class activation maps (CAMs) and recent variants provide ways to visually explain the DNN decision-making process by displaying 'attention' heatmaps of the DNNs. Nevertheless, the CAM explanation only offers relative attention information, that is, on an attention heatmap, we can interpret which image region is more or less important than the others. However, these regions cannot be meaningfully compared across classes, and the contribution of each region to the model's class prediction is not revealed. To address these challenges that ultimately lead to better DNN Interpretation, in this paper, we propose CAPE, a novel reformulation of CAM that provides a unified and probabilistically meaningful assessment of the contributions of image regions. We quantitatively and qualitatively compare CAPE with state-of-the-art CAM methods on CUB and ImageNet benchmark datasets to demonstrate enhanced interpretability. Medical vision language pre-training (VLP) has emerged as a frontier of research, enabling zero-shot pathological recognition by comparing the query image with the textual descriptions for each disease. Due to the complex semantics of biomedical texts, current methods struggle to align medical images with key pathological findings in unstructured reports. This leads to the misalignment with the target disease's textual representation. In this paper, we introduce a novel VLP framework designed to dissect disease descriptions into their fundamental aspects, leveraging prior knowledge about the visual manifestations of pathologies. This is achieved by consulting a large language model and medical experts. Integrating a Transformer module, our approach aligns an input image with the diverse elements of a disease, generating aspect-centric image representations. By consolidating the matches from each aspect, we improve the compatibility between an image and its associated disease. Additionally, capitalizing on the aspect-oriented representations, we present a dual-head Transformer tailored to process known and unknown diseases, optimizing the comprehensive detection efficacy. Conducting experiments on seven downstream datasets, ours improves the accuracy of recent methods by up to 8.56% and 17.26% for seen and unseen categories, respectively. Organ at risk (OAR) segmentation is a critical process in radiotherapy treatment planning such as head and neck tumors. Nevertheless, in clinical practice, radiation oncologists predominantly perform OAR segmentations manually on CT scans. This manual process is highly time-consuming and expensive, limiting the number of patients who can receive timely radiotherapy. Additionally, CT scans offer lower soft-tissue contrast compared to MRI. Despite MRI providing superior soft-tissue visualization, its time-consuming nature makes it infeasible for real-time treatment planning. To address these challenges, we propose a method called SegReg, which utilizes Elastic Symmetric Normalization for registering MRI to perform OAR segmentation. SegReg outperforms the CT-only baseline by 16.78% in mDSC and 18.77% in mIoU, showing that it effectively combines the geometric accuracy of CT with the superior soft-tissue contrast of MRI, making accurate automated OAR segmentation for clinical practice become possible. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are the accepted standard for treatment effect estimation but they can be infeasible due to ethical reasons and prohibitive costs. Single-arm trials, where all patients belong to the treatment group, can be a viable alternative but require access to an external control group. We propose an identifiable deep latent-variable model for this scenario that can also account for missing covariate observations by modeling their structured missingness patterns. Our method uses amortized variational inference to learn both group-specific and identifiable shared latent representations, which can subsequently be used for {\em (i)} patient matching if treatment outcomes are not available for the treatment group, or for {\em (ii)} direct treatment effect estimation assuming outcomes are available for both groups. We evaluate the model on a public benchmark as well as on a data set consisting of a published RCT study and real-world electronic health records. Obtaining in-depth understanding of the relationships between the additive manufacturing (AM) process, microstructure and mechanical properties is crucial to overcome barriers in AM. In this study, database of metal AM was created thanks to many literature studies. Subsequently meta-analyses on the data was undertaken to provide insights into whether such relationships are well reflected in the literature data. The analyses help reveal the bias and what the data tells us, and to what extent machine learning (ML) can learn from the data. The first major bias is associated with common practices in identifying the process based on optimizing the consolidation. Most reports were for consolidation while data on microstructure and mechanical properties was significantly less. In addition, only high consolidation values was provided, so ML was not able to learn the full spectrum of the process - consolidation relationship. The common identification of process maps based on only consolidation also poses another bias as mechanical properties that ultimately govern the quality of an AM build are controlled not only by the consolidation, but also microstructure. Meta-analysis of the literature data also shows weak correlation between process with consolidation and mechanical properties. This weak correlation is attributed to the stated biases and the non-monotonic and non-linear relationships between the process and quality variables. Fortunately, trained ML models capture well the influence and interactions between process parameters and quality variables, and predicts accurately the yield stress, suggesting that the correlation between process, microstructure and yield strength is well reflected in the data. Lastly, due to the current limitation in the process map identification, we propose to identify the process map based on not only the consolidation, but also mechanical properties.

Intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) is a pathological condition characterized by bleeding inside the skull or brain, which can be attributed to various factors. Identifying, localizing and quantifying ICH has important clinical implications, in a bleed-dependent manner. While deep learning techniques are widely used in medical image segmentation and have been applied to the ICH segmentation task, existing public ICH datasets do not support the multi-class segmentation problem. To address this, we develop the Brain Hemorrhage Segmentation Dataset (BHSD), which provides a 3D multi-class ICH dataset containing 192 volumes with pixel-level annotations and 2200 volumes with slice-level annotations across five categories of ICH. To demonstrate the utility of the dataset, we formulate a series of supervised and semi-supervised ICH segmentation tasks. Medical image synthesis is a challenging task due to the scarcity of paired data. Several methods have applied CycleGAN to leverage unpaired data, but they often generate inaccurate mappings that shift the anatomy. This problem is further exacerbated when the images from the source and target modalities are heavily misaligned. Recently, current methods have aimed to address this issue by incorporating a supplementary segmentation network. Unfortunately, this strategy requires costly and time-consuming pixel-level annotations. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes MaskGAN, a novel and cost-effective framework that enforces structural consistency by utilizing automatically extracted coarse masks. Our approach employs a mask generator to outline anatomical structures and a content generator to synthesize CT contents that align with these structures. Extensive experiments demonstrate that MaskGAN outperforms state-of-the-art synthesis methods on a challenging pediatric dataset, where MR and CT scans are heavily misaligned due to rapid growth in children. Endometriosis is a common chronic gynecological disorder that has many characteristics, including the pouch of Douglas (POD) obliteration, which can be diagnosed using Transvaginal gynecological ultrasound (TVUS) scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). TVUS and MRI are complementary non-invasive endometriosis diagnosis imaging techniques, but patients are usually not scanned using both modalities and, it is generally more challenging to detect POD obliteration from MRI than TVUS. To mitigate this classification imbalance, we propose in this paper a knowledge distillation training algorithm to improve the POD obliteration detection from MRI by leveraging the detection results from unpaired TVUS data. More specifically, our algorithm pre-trains a teacher model to detect POD obliteration from TVUS data, and it also pre-trains a student model with 3D masked auto-encoder using a large amount of unlabelled pelvic 3D MRI volumes. Next, we distill the knowledge from the teacher TVUS POD obliteration detector to train the student MRI model by minimizing a regression loss that approximates the output of the student to the teacher using unpaired TVUS and MRI data. Automating radiology report generation can ease the reporting workload for radiologists. However, existing works focus mainly on the chest area due to the limited availability of public datasets for other regions. Besides, they often rely on naive data-driven approaches, e.g., a basic encoder-decoder framework with captioning loss, which limits their ability to recognise complex patterns across diverse anatomical regions. To address these issues, we propose X-RGen, a radiologist-minded report generation framework across six anatomical regions. In X-RGen, we seek to mimic the behaviour of human radiologists, breaking them down into four principal phases: 1) initial observation, 2) cross-region analysis, 3) medical interpretation, and 4) report formation. Firstly, we adopt an image encoder for feature extraction, akin to a radiologist's preliminary review. Secondly, we enhance the recognition capacity of the image encoder by analysing images and reports across various regions, mimicking how radiologists gain their experience and improve their professional ability from past cases. Thirdly, just as radiologists apply their expertise to interpret radiology images, we introduce radiological knowledge of multiple anatomical regions to further analyse the features from a clinical perspective. Lastly, we generate reports based on the medical-aware features using a typical auto-regressive text decoder. Both natural language generation (NLG) and clinical efficacy metrics show the effectiveness of X-RGen on six X-ray datasets. Cheapfake is a recently coined term that encompasses non-AI ("cheap") manipulations of multimedia content. Cheapfakes are known to be more prevalent than deepfakes. Cheapfake media can be created using editing software for image/video manipulations, or even without using any software, by simply altering the context of an image/video by sharing the media alongside misleading claims. This alteration of context is referred to as out-of-context (OOC) misuse of media. OOC media is much harder to detect than fake media, since the images and videos are not tampered. In this challenge, we focus on detecting OOC images, and more specifically the misuse of real photographs with conflicting image captions in news items. Plastic inhomogeneity, particularly localised strain, is one of the main mechanisms responsible for failures in engineering alloys. This work studied the spatial arrangement and distribution of microstructure and their influence in the plastic inhomogeneity of Inconel 718 fabricated by additive manufacturing (AM). In particular, the density and spatial distribution of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) and the crystallographic texture components were examined in relation to the spatial plastic deformation. In-situ tensile testing coupled with microscopy and EBSD was performed to understand the evolution of the as-built microstructure and its effect on the spatial and temporal deformation behaviour. Bidirectional scan strategy with no interlayer rotation resulted in highly ordered alternating arrangements of coarse Goss-like {110}<001> textured grains separated by fine Cube-like {100}<001> textured grains. This strategy also resulted in an overall high density of dislocations (in particular GNDs) with a regular pattern: the fine grains contained very high GND density while the coarse grains contained less GNDs but they were oriented to be perpendicular to the scan direction. Although this strategy resulted in a dominant Cube texture that is desirable for isotropy, the Cube texture gradually weakened and the undesirable Goss component increased during plastic deformation. Together with the columnar grain morphology and aligned GND arrangement, such texture evolution caused intense plastic inhomogeneity during deformation. Replacing the bidirectional strategy with a chessboard strategy involving a 67{\deg} layer rotation resulted in a lower GND density and much more random distribution of crystallographic texture and GNDs, with a dominant Cube component (and lower Goss texture) that remained stable throughout plastic deformation, reducing the plastic inhomogeneity.

To develop the advanced self-driving systems, many researchers are focusing to alert all possible traffic risk cases from closed-circuit television (CCTV) and dashboard-mounted cameras. Most of these methods focused on identifying frame-by-frame in which an anomaly has occurred, but they are unrealized, which road traffic participant can cause ego-vehicle leading into collision because of available annotation dataset only to detect anomaly on traffic video. Near-miss is one type of accident and can be defined as a narrowly avoided accident. However, there is no difference between accident and near-miss at the time before the accident happened, so our contribution is to redefine the accident definition and re-annotate the accident inconsistency on DADA-2000 dataset together with near-miss. By extending the start and end time of accident duration, our annotation can precisely cover all ego-motions during an incident and consistently classify all possible traffic risk accidents including near-miss to give more critical information for real-world driving assistance systems. The proposed method integrates two different components: conditional style translation (CST) and separable 3-dimensional convolutional neural network (S3D). CST architecture is derived by unsupervised image-to-image translation networks (UNIT) used for augmenting the re-annotation DADA-2000 dataset to increase the number of traffic risk accident videos and to generalize the performance of video classification model on different types of conditions while S3D is useful for video classification to prove dataset re-annotation consistency. Driver reaction is of vital importance in risk scenarios. Drivers can take correct evasive maneuver at proper cushion time to avoid the potential traffic crashes, but this reaction process is highly experience-dependent and requires various levels of driving skills. To improve driving safety and avoid the traffic accidents, it is necessary to provide all road drivers with on-board driving assistance. This study explores the plausibility of case-based reasoning (CBR) as the inference paradigm underlying the choice of personalized crash evasive maneuvers and the cushion time, by leveraging the wealthy of human driving experience from the steady stream of traffic cases, which have been rarely explored in previous studies. To this end, in this paper, we propose an open evolving framework for generating personalized on-board driving assistance. In particular, we present the FFMTE model with high performance to model the traffic events and build the case database; A tailored CBR-based method is then proposed to retrieve, reuse and revise the existing cases to generate the assistance. Sleep plays a vital role in our physical, cognitive, and psychological well-being. Despite its importance, long-term monitoring of personalized sleep quality (SQ) in real-world contexts is still challenging. Many sleep researches are still developing clinically and far from accessible to the general public. Fortunately, wearables and IoT devices provide the potential to explore the sleep insights from multimodal data, and have been used in some SQ researches. However, most of these studies analyze the sleep related data and present the results in a delayed manner (i.e., today's SQ obtained from last night's data), it is sill difficult for individuals to know how their sleep will be before they go to bed and how they can proactively improve it. To this end, this paper proposes a computational framework to monitor the individual SQ based on both the objective and subjective data from multiple sources, and moves a step further towards providing the personalized feedback to improve the SQ in a data-driven manner. The feedback is implemented by referring the insights from the PMData dataset based on the discovered patterns between life events and different levels of SQ. The deep learning based personal SQ model (PerSQ), using the long-term heterogeneous data and considering the carry-over effect, achieves higher prediction performance compared with baseline models. Recently, the multimodal and crossmodal AI techniques have attracted the attention of communities. The former aims to collect disjointed and heterogeneous data to compensate for complementary information to enhance robust prediction. The latter targets to utilize one modality to predict another modality by discovering the common attention sharing between them. Although both approaches share the same target: generate smart data from collected raw data, the former demands more modalities while the latter aims to decrease the variety of modalities. This paper first discusses the role of multimodal and crossmodal AI in smart data analysis in general. Then, we introduce the multimodal and crossmodal AI framework (MMCRAI) to balance the abovementioned approaches and make it easy to scale into different domains. This framework is integrated into xDataPF (the cross-data platform https://www.xdata.nict.jp/). We also introduce and discuss various applications built on this framework and xDataPF.

Although machine learning (ML) has shown promise in numerous domains, there are concerns about generalizability to out-of-sample data. This is currently addressed by centrally sharing ample, and importantly diverse, data from multiple sites. However, such centralization is challenging to scale (or even not feasible) due to various limitations. Federated ML (FL) provides an alternative to train accurate and generalizable ML models, by only sharing numerical model updates. Here we present findings from the largest FL study to-date, involving data from 71 healthcare institutions across 6 continents, to generate an automatic tumor boundary detector for the rare disease of glioblastoma, utilizing the largest dataset of such patients ever used in the literature (25,256 MRI scans from 6,314 patients). We demonstrate a 33% improvement over a publicly trained model to delineate the surgically targetable tumor, and 23% improvement over the tumor's entire extent. We anticipate our study to: 1) enable more studies in healthcare informed by large and diverse data, ensuring meaningful results for rare diseases and underrepresented populations, 2) facilitate further quantitative analyses for glioblastoma via performance optimization of our consensus model for eventual public release, and 3) demonstrate the effectiveness of FL at such scale and task complexity as a paradigm shift for multi-site collaborations, alleviating the need for data sharing., Comment: federated learning, deep learning, convolutional neural network, segmentation, brain tumor, glioma, glioblastoma, FeTS, BraTS

Binary neural networks (BNNs) that use 1-bit weights and activations have garnered interest as extreme quantization provides low power dissipation. By implementing BNNs as computing-in-memory (CIM), which computes multiplication and accumulations on memory arrays in an analog fashion, namely analog CIM, we can further improve the energy efficiency to process neural networks. However, analog CIMs suffer from the potential problem that process variation degrades the accuracy of BNNs. Our Monte-Carlo simulations show that in an SRAM-based analog CIM of VGG-9, the classification accuracy of CIFAR-10 is degraded even below 20% under process variations of 65nm CMOS. To overcome this problem, we present a variation-aware BNN framework. The proposed framework is developed for SRAM-based BNN CIMs since SRAM is most widely used as on-chip memory, however easily extensible to BNN CIMs based on other memories. Our extensive experimental results show that under process variation of 65nm CMOS, our framework significantly improves the CIFAR-10 accuracies of SRAM-based BNN CIMs, from 10% and 10.1% to 87.76% and 77.74% for VGG-9 and RESNET-18 respectively., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures

Longitudinal imaging forms an essential component in the management and follow-up of many medical conditions. The presence of lesion changes on serial imaging can have significant impact on clinical decision making, highlighting the important role for automated change detection. Lesion changes can represent anomalies in serial imaging, which implies a limited availability of annotations and a wide variety of possible changes that need to be considered. Hence, we introduce a new unsupervised anomaly detection and localisation method trained exclusively with serial images that do not contain any lesion changes. Our training automatically synthesises lesion changes in serial images, introducing detection and localisation pseudo-labels that are used to self-supervise the training of our model. Given the rarity of these lesion changes in the synthesised images, we train the model with the imbalance robust focal Tversky loss. When compared to supervised models trained on different datasets, our method shows competitive performance in the detection and localisation of new demyelinating lesions on longitudinal magnetic resonance imaging in multiple sclerosis patients. The mimicry of crystalline microstructure at meso-scale creates a new class of architected materials, termed meta-crystals, and offers effective ways to significantly improve the toughness and eliminate the post-yield collapse of architected materials. This study investigated the mechanical behaviour of polygrain-like meta-crystals fabricated from Ti6Al4V by laser powder bed fusion. The mechanical behaviour of Ti6Al4V meta-crystals is governed by lattice structures across length-scales: the crystalline microstructure, architected crystal-like mesostructures and the quality of lattice struts. Due to the intricate architecture, significant processing defects were seen in the printed meta-crystals, in particular notch-like defects due to lack of fusion at the free surface of struts. Such defects raised stress concentration and reduced the load-bearing area of struts, hence significantly weakening the lattice struts. In addition, the as-printed condition was brittle due to the presence of acicular alpha' martensites. The defects and the as-printed brittleness led to the premature fracture of struts and compromised the benefits of the crystal-inspired mesostructures. The study subsequently conducted multiple measures to resolve this issue: increasing the strut diameter to reduce the influence of the process defects, and annealing to relieve internal stresses and regain ductility. The combination of the increase in strut diameter and annealing successfully enabled the crystal-like architected mesostructure to effectively improve the toughness of the meta-crystals., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures

This study analyses literature data to identify optimised print parameters and assesses the consolidation, microstructure, and mechanical properties of Hastelloy-X printed by laser powder bed fusion. Effects of post annealing and hot-isostatic pressing (HIP) on the microstructure and mechanical properties are also revealed. The susceptibility to the solidification cracking and the as-built microstructure such as precipitation and chemical segregation were predicted by the calculation of thermodynamics phase diagrams. The distribution of solidification cracks throughout the builds was quantified for the as-built, annealed and HIP conditions. The assessment reveals the variation of crack density towards the bottom, top and free surface of solid builds. This distribution of cracks is found to be associate with the thermal gradient and thermal conductivity which were estimated by analytical thermal calculations. While the annealing and HIP both can alter the as-printed microstructure thanks to recovery and recrystallisation, the micro-cracks and pores were only successfully removed by the HIP. In addition to the removal, recrystallisation and precipitation in the HIP (stronger than in annealing), resulting in optimal mechanical properties including a substantial increase in elongation from 13% to 20%, significant improvement of ultimate tensile stress from 965 MPa to 1045 MPa with moderately high yield stress thanks to precipitation., Comment: This manuscript has been submitted to Additive Manufacturing

A recent report on successful employment of the grain boundary strengthening to design extraordinarily damage-tolerant architected materials (i.e. meta-crystals) necessitates fundamental studies to understand the underlying mechanisms responsible for the toughening and high performance of meta-crystals. Such understanding will enable greater confidence and control in developing high performing and smart architected materials. In this study, buckling of lattice struts in single crystal-like meta-crystals was firstly analysed to reveal its role in shear band activities. Shear band systems of singly oriented meta-crystals were also identified to provide a solid basis for predicting and controlling the shearing behaviour in polygrain-like meta-crystals. The boundary-induced strengthening effects in meta-crystals was found to relate to the boundary type and coherency as they govern the transmission of shear bands across meta-grain boundaries. The obtained insights in this study provide crucial knowledge in developing high strength architected materials with great capacity in controlling the mechanical strength and damage path.

The CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy is highly printable and holds great potential for structural applications. However, no significant discussions on cyclic plasticity and fatigue damage in previous studies. This study provides significant insights into the link between print processes, solidification microstructure, cyclic plasticity and fatigue damage evolution in the alloy fabricated by laser powder bed fusion. Thermodynamics-based predictions (validated by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX)) showed that Cr, Co and Fe partition to the core of the solidification cells, whilst Mn and Ni to the cell boundaries in all considered print parameters. Both dislocation slip and deformation twinning were found to be responsible for plastic deformation under monotonic loading. However, the former was found to be the single dominant mechanism for cyclic plasticity. The surface finish helped to substantially delay the crack initiation and cause lack-of-fusion porosity to be the main source of crack initiation. Most significantly, the scan strategies significantly affect grain arrangements and grain dimensions, leading to noticeable effects on fatigue crack propagation; in particular, the highest resistance crack propagation was seen in the meander scan strategy with 0{\deg} rotation thanks to the most columnar grains and the smallest spacing of grain boundaries along the crack propagation path., Comment: 24 pages, 16 figures
