Differential code bias (DCB) of satellite is an error that cannot be ignored in precise positioning, timing, ionospheric modeling, satellite clock correction, and ambiguity resolution. The completion of the third generation of BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS-3) has extended DCB to multichannel code bias observations and observable-specific signal bias (OSB). In this paper, the DCB and OSB products provided by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) are analyzed and compared. The DCB parameters for the BDS satellites are applied in both single- and dual-frequency single point positioning (SPP), and the results are intensively investigated. Based on the satellite DCB parameters of the BDS, the performance of precise point positioning (PPP) with different frequency combinations is also analyzed in terms of positioning accuracy and convergence time. The standard deviations (STDs) of DCBs at each signal pair fluctuate from 0.2 ns to 1.5 ns. The DCBs of BDS-2 are slightly more stable than those of BDS-3. The mean values and STDs of C2I and C7I OSBs for BDS-2 are at the same level and are numerically smaller than their counterparts for the C6I OSBs. The mean OSBs for each signal of the BDS-3, excluding C2I, fluctuate between 12.35 ns and 12.94 ns, and the STD fluctuates between 2.11 ns and 3.10 ns. The DCBs and OSBs of the BDS-3 of the IGSO satellites are more stable than those of the MEO satellites. The corrections for TGD and DCB are able to improve the accuracy of single-frequency SPP by 44.09% and 44.07%, respectively, and improve the accuracy of dual-frequency SPP by 6.44% and 12.85%, respectively. The most significant improvements from DCB correction are seen in single-frequency positioning with B1I and dual-frequency positioning with B2a+B3I. DCB correction can improve the horizontal and three-dimensional positioning accuracy of the dual-frequency PPP of different ionosphere-free combinations by 13.53% and 13.84% on average, respectively, although the convergence is slowed. Deep learning has substantially pushed forward remote sensing image change detection through extracting discriminative hierarchical features. However, as the increasingly high-resolution remote sensing images have abundant spatial details but limited spectral information, the use of conventional backbone networks would give rise to blurry boundaries between different semantics among hierarchical features. This explains why most false alarms in the final predictions distribute around change boundaries. To alleviate the problem, we pay attention to feature refinement and propose deep learning networks that deliver improved separability (ISNet). Our ISNet reaps the advantages from two strategies applied to refining bitemporal feature hierarchies: 1) margin maximization that clarifies the gap between changed and unchanged semantics and 2) targeted arrangement of attention mechanisms that direct the use of channel attention (CA) and spatial attention (SA) for highlighting semantic and positional information, respectively. Specifically, we insert CA modules into share-weighted backbone networks to facilitate semantic-specific feature extraction. The semantic boundaries in the extracted bitemporal hierarchical features are then clarified by margin maximization modules, followed by SA modules to enhance positional change responses. A top–down fusion pathway makes the final refined features cover multiscale representations and have strong separability for remote sensing image change detection. Extensive experimental evaluations demonstrate that our ISNet achieves state-of-the-art performance on the LEVIR-CD, SYSU-CD, and Season-Varying datasets in terms of overall accuracy (OA), Intersection-of-Union (IoU), and F1 score. Background: Alopecia has become an exceedingly prevalent dermatological disorder. Etiologically, infection (bacterial and fungal infection), inflammation, and immune dysregulation are the main causes of immune-mediated hair loss. Treating hair loss has remained challenging as the available therapies are limited. Exosomes from adipose-derived stem cells (ADSC-Exos) have been used for treating neurodegenerative diseases and autoimmune diseases and in wound-healing treatments. However, the function and mechanism of ADSC-Exos in alopecia treatment remain unclear. This study is aimed at investigating the effects of ADSC-Exos on hair growth in vitro and in vivo for potentially treating immune-mediated alopecia and further exploring the underlying mechanism.Methods: Cell proliferation, migration, and apoptosis of dermal papilla cells (DPCs) that were treated with ADSC-Exos were detected using the cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, scratch wound-healing assay, and flow cytometry assay, respectively. A C57BL/6 hair-depilated mouse model was established in vivo; then, ADSC-Exos were subcutaneously injected alone or in combined with minoxidil. The effects of ADSC-Exos on hair growth, pathological changes, and the related mechanism were investigated by HE staining, quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), western blotting, and RNA sequencing (RNA-seq).Results: ADSC-Exos significantly promoted DPC proliferation and migration while also reducing apoptosis. In addition, compared with the control group, ADSC-Exos-treated mice had better hair growth, more hair follicles (HFs) and thicker dermis. RNA-seq revealed that the miR-22 and TNF-α signaling pathways were markedly downregulated in DPCs after ADSC-Exos treatment. In addition, according to qRT-PCR and western blotting results, the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway was activated in the skin of ADSC-Exos-treated mice.Conclusion: ADSC-Exos therapy positively affected the promotion of hair regrowth by regulating miR-22, the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, and the TNF-α signaling pathway, implying that ADSC-Exos could be a promising cell-free therapeutic strategy for immune-mediated alopecia. • A new DDES-Tr, based on the three-equation k-ω-γ transition/turbulence integrated model, was proposed through the similar way with the typical DDES. • A modification of the length scale was introduced to ensure the models worked in their own interest regions. • DDES-Tr model can not only resolve the massive separation on the leeward side, but also model the transition on the windward side. The hypersonic flow at high angle of attack past the Orion capsule was predicted by a delayed detached eddy simulation (DDES), based on a three-equation k-ω-γ transition/turbulence integrated model (Tr). The computational results of the mean and instantaneous heat rates by DDES-Tr are compared with the available measurements and DDES-FT (full turbulence). As expected, the massive separation on the leeward side can be well predicted by both DDES models, but DDES-FT cannot model the transition and over-predicts the heat flux on the windward side. Fortunately, the DDES-Tr model can not only resolve the massive separation on the leeward side, but also model the transition on the windward side. Furthermore, the contributions of the first, second, and crossflow modes on the transition are quantitatively explored. Although the freestream is hypersonic, the second Mack mode is very weak owing to the low supersonic speed after the strong bow shock wave. Later quartz fiber reinforced composites were prepared by hot-pressing process, and their thermal and mechanical properties were characterized. The glass transition temperatures of the composites were higher than 450 °C, and the bending strength reached 942 MPa. The combination of excellent thermal and mechanical performance indicated BPNs could be potentially applied in high performance composites or as universal modifiers for heat resistant resins. Abstract The global navigation satellite system (GNSS) is presently a powerful tool for sensing the Earth's ionosphere. For this purpose, the ionospheric measurements (IMs), which are by definition slant total electron content biased by satellite and receiver differential code biases (DCBs), need to be first extracted from GNSS data and then used as inputs for further ionospheric representations such as tomography. By using the customary phase-to-code leveling procedure, this research comparatively evaluates the calibration errors on experimental IMs obtained from three GNSS, namely the US Global Positioning System (GPS), the Chinese BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), and the European Galileo. On the basis of ten days of dual-frequency, triple-GNSS observations collected from eight co-located ground receivers that independently form short-baselines and zero-baselines, the IMs are determined for each receiver for all tracked satellites and then for each satellite differenced for each baseline to evaluate their calibration errors. As first derived from the short-baseline analysis, the effects of calibration errors on IMs range, in total electron content units, from 1.58 to 2.16, 0.70 to 1.87, and 1.13 to 1.56 for GPS, Galileo, and BDS, respectively. Additionally, for short-baseline experiment, it is shown that the code multipath effect accounts for their main budget. Sidereal periodicity is found in single-differenced (SD) IMs for GPS and BDS geostationary satellites, and the correlation of SD IMs over two consecutive days achieves the maximum value when the time tag is around 4 min. After considering the local effects of nose bluntness on the transition, a modification for the timescale of the second mode in the three-equation k-ω-γ transition model has been proposed to improve the hypersonic transition past cones. The ratio of local unit Reynolds number over freestream unit Reynolds number ( Re local / Re ∞ ) is introduced to delay and reduce the development of second mode instability, according to the results of linear stability theory. The hypersonic transitions past a cone with three nose radii at the angle of attack of 0° were simulated to calibrate the new model and its constants. Then, the improved model is extended to predict the hypersonic transitions past the cones with larger radius and at non-zero angles of attack. Rapid diagnosis and analysis of human keloid scar tissues in an automated manner are essential for understanding pathogenesis and formulating treatment solutions. Our aim is to resolve the features of the extracellular matrix in human keloid scar tissues automatically for accurate diagnosis with the aid of machine learning. Multiphoton microscopy was utilized to acquire images of collagen and elastin fibers. Morphological features, histogram, and gray-level co-occurrence matrix-based texture features were obtained to produce a total of 28 features. The minimum redundancy maximum relevancy feature selection approach was implemented to rank these features and establish feature subsets, each of which was employed to build a machine learning model through the tree-based pipeline optimization tool (TPOT). The feature importance ranking was obtained, and 28 feature subsets were acquired by incremental feature selection. The subset with the top 23 features was identified as the most accurate. Then stochastic gradient descent classifier optimized by the TPOT was generated with an accuracy of 96.15% in classifying normal, scar, and adjacent tissues. The area under curve of the classification results (scar versus normal and adjacent, normal versus scar and adjacent, and adjacent versus normal and scar) was 1.0, 1.0, and 0.99, respectively. The objects in remote sensing images are normally densely packed, arbitrarily oriented, and surrounded by complex backgrounds. Great efforts have been devoted to developing oriented object detection models to accommodate such data characteristics. We argue that an effective detection model hinges on three aspects: feature enhancement, feature decoupling for classification and localization, and an appropriate bounding box regression scheme. In this article, we instantiate the three aspects on top of the classical Faster R-CNN, with three novel components proposed. First, we propose a weighted fusion and refinement (WFR) module, which adaptively weighs multi-level features and leverages the attention mechanism to refine the fused features. Second, we decouple the RoI (region of interest) features for the subsequent classification and localization via a lightweight affine transformation-based feature decoupling (ATFD) module. Third, we propose a post-classification regression (PCR) module for generating the desired quadrilateral bounding boxes. Specifically, PCR predicts the precise vertex location on each side of a predicted horizontal box, by simply learning the following: (i) classify the discretized regression range of the vertex, and (ii) revise the vertex location with an offset. Current studies on large-scale remotely sensed images are of great national importance for monitoring and evaluating global climate and ecological changes. In particular, real time distributed high-performance visualization and computation have become indispensable research components in facilitating the extraction of remotely sensed image textures to enable mining spatiotemporal patterns and dynamics of landscapes from massive geo-digital information collected from satellites. Remotely sensed images are usually highly correlated with rich landscape features. By exploiting the structures of these images and extracting their textures, fundamental insights of the landscape can be derived. Furthermore, the interdisciplinary collaboration on the remotely sensed image analysis demands multifarious expertise in a wide spectrum of fields including geography, computer science, and engineering. This paper develops a Distributed Computing System for Remotely Sensed Images framework (DCSRI) to support distributed and high performance computing for geospatial images. A new algorithm supporting parallel computing with dynamic workload balance for large images, namely Variogram-based Image Texture Extractor (VITE) for extracting image texture from massive and dynamic digital remotely sensed images is presented. The VITE algorithm is used to represent and transform the original data into image textures. The DCSRI framework has the capacity to perform high performance computing on Linux clusters or supercomputers to address the intensive computing challenges arising from large and multiple images. Advanced web technology is also exploited to enable interactive user experience with prompt visual feedback as well as good interoperability. Users can also dynamically steer the visualization and computation process by adjusting the computing parameters on-the-fly. This system leads to a great reduction of image data and provides useful information for knowledge discovery and digital image classification in a user friendly and computing efficient way. The broadcast ionospheric model is mainly used to correct the ionospheric delay error for single-frequency users. Since the BeiDou global ionospheric delay correction model (BDGIM) is a novel broadcast ionospheric model for BDS-3, its performance was analyzed through single point positioning (SPP) in this study. Twenty-two stations simultaneously receiving B1C, B2a, B1I and B3I signals were selected from the International GNSS Service (IGS) and the International GNSS Monitoring and Assessment System (iGMAS) tracking networks for the SPP experiments. The differential code bias (DCB) parameters were used to correct the hardware delays in the signals of B1C and B2a. The results showed that the BDGIM performs the best in high-latitude areas, and can effectively improve the positioning accuracy compared with the Klobuchar model. The average 3D positioning accuracy of the four civil signals can reach 3.58 m in high-latitude areas. The positioning accuracies with the BDGIM in the northern hemisphere are better than those in the southern hemisphere, and the global average 3D positioning accuracy of the four civil signals is 4.60 m. The performance of the BDGIM also shows some seasonal differences. The BDGIM performs better than the Klobuchar model on the days of spring equinox and winter solstice, while the opposite is true on the days of summer solstice and autumn equinox. On the day of winter solstice, the average 3D accuracies with the BDGIM on the signals of B1C, B2a, B1I and B3I are 4.13 m, 5.32 m, 4.40 m and 4.49 m, respectively. Although the SPP accuracies are to some extent affected by the geomagnetic storm, the BDGIM generally performs better and are more resistant to the geomagnetic storm than the Klobuchar model. Abstract: Military training activities disturb ground and vegetation cover of landscapes and increases potential soil erosion. To monitor the dynamics of soil erosion, there is an important need for an optimal sampling design in which determining the optimal spatial resolutions in terms of size of sample plots used for the collection of ground data and the size of pixels for mapping. Given a sample size, an optimal spatial resolution should be cost-efficient in both sampling costs and map accuracy. This study presents a spatial variability-based method for that purpose and compared it with the traditional methods in a study area in which a soil erosion cover factor was sampled and mapped with multiple plot sizes and multi-sensor images. The results showed that the optimal spatial resolutions obtained using the spatial variability-based method were 12 and 20m for years 1999 and 2000, respectively, and were consistent with those using the traditional methods. Moreover, the most appropriate spatial resolutions using the high-resolution images were also consistent with those using ground sample data, which provides a potential to use the high-resolution images instead of ground data to determine the optimal spatial resolutions before sampling. The most appropriate spatial resolutions above were then verified in terms of cost-efficiency which was defined as the product of sampling cost and map error using ordinary kriging without images and sequential Gaussian co-simulation with images to generate maps. Soil loss is commonly predicted using the revised universal soil loss equation consisting of rainfall–runoff erosivity, soil erodibility, slope steepness and length, cover management, and support practice factors. Because of the multiple factors, their interactions, and spatial and temporal variability, soil erosion varies considerably over space and time. For these reasons, modeling soil loss is very complicated. Decision-makers need local and regional estimates of soil loss as well as their corresponding uncertainties. Neglecting the local and detailed information may lead to improper decision-making. This paper demonstrates a strategy based on a sample data set and a geostatistical method called sequential Gaussian simulation to derive local estimates and their uncertainties for the input factors of a soil erosion system. This strategy models the spatial and temporal variability of the factors and derives their estimates and variances at any unknown location and time. This strategy was applied to a case study at which the rainfall–runoff erosivity R factor was spatially and temporally estimated using a data set of rainfall. The results showed that the correlation between the observations and estimates by the strategy ranged from 0.89 to 0.97, and most of the mean estimates fell into their confidence intervals at a probability of 95%. Comparing the estimates of the R factor using a traditional isoerodent map to the observed values suggested that the R factor might have increased and a new map may be needed. Global navigation satellite system (GNSS) provides users with all-weather, continuous, high-precision positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services. In the operation and use of GNSS, the influence of the space environment is a factor that must be considered. For example, during geomagnetic storms, a series of changes in the Earth's magnetosphere, ionosphere, and upper atmosphere affect GNSS's positioning performance. To investigate the positioning performance of global satellite navigation systems during geomagnetic storms, this study selected three geomagnetic storm events that occurred from September to December 2023. Utilizing the global positioning system (GPS)/Beidou navigation satellite system (BDS) dual-system, kinematic precise point positioning (PPP) experiments were conducted, and the raw observational data from 100 stations worldwide was analyzed. The experimental results show that the positioning accuracy of some stations in high-latitude areas decreases significantly when using the conventional Geometry Free (GF) cycle-slip detection threshold during geomagnetic storms, which means that the GF is no longer applicable to high-precision positioning services. Meanwhile, there is no significant change in the satellite signal strengths received at the stations during the period of the decrease in positioning accuracy. Analyzing the cycle-slip rates for stations where abnormal accuracy occurred, it was observed that stations experiencing a significant decline in positioning accuracy exhibited serious cycle-slip misjudgments. To improve the kinematic PPP accuracy during magnetic storms, this paper proposes an adaptive threshold for cycle-slip detection and designs five experimental strategies. After using the GF adaptive threshold, the station positioning accuracy improved significantly. It achieved the accuracy level of the quiet period, while the cycle-slip incidence reached the average level. During magnetic storms, the ionosphere changes rapidly, and the use of the traditional GF constant threshold will cause serious cycle-slip misjudgments, which makes the dynamic accuracy in high latitude areas and some mid-latitude areas uncommon, while the use of the GF adaptive threshold can alleviate this phenomenon and improve the positioning accuracy in the high-latitude regions and some of the affected mid-latitude areas during the magnetic storms. The need for timely, spatially, and thematically accurate information regarding forests is increasing because of the key role of forests in the global carbon balance and sustainable social, economic, ecological, and cultural development. While an increasing number of countries in the world already are conducting statistically sound forest inventories, a few for 100 years, inventories in other countries are still lacking, which makes the global information about forest statistics inaccurate. This implies that remote sensing-based approaches are vulnerable to misclassification and inaccurate estimation of forest parameters and changes, such as the recognition of temporarily unstocked forest areas, forest degradation, and species composition, as well as in strictly following the globally adopted definitions. Deep learning classifiers exhibit remarkable performance for hyperspectral image classification given sufficient labeled samples but show deficiency in the situation of learning with limited labeled samples. Active learning endows deep learning classifiers with the ability to alleviate this deficiency. However, existing active deep learning methods tend to underestimate the feature variability of hyperspectral images when querying informative unlabeled samples subject to certain acquisition heuristics. A major reason for this bias is that the acquisition heuristics are normally derived based on the output of a deep learning classifier, in which representational power is bounded by the number of labeled training samples at hand. To address this limitation, we developed a feature-oriented adversarial active learning (FAAL) strategy, which exploits the high-level features from one intermediate layer of a deep learning classifier for establishing an acquisition heuristic based on a generative adversarial network (GAN). Specifically, we developed a feature generator for generating fake high-level features and a feature discriminator for discriminating between the real high-level features and the fake ones. Trained with both the real and the fake high-level features, the feature discriminator comprehensively captures the feature variability of hyperspectral images and yields a powerful and generalized discriminative capability. We leverage the well-trained feature discriminator as the acquisition heuristic to measure the informativeness of unlabeled samples. With the development of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and the opening of Application Programming Interface (API) of Android terminals, the positioning research of Android terminals has attracted the attention of GNSS community. In this paper, three static experiments were conducted to analyze the raw GNSS observations quality and positioning performances of the smartphones. For the two experimental smartphones, the numbers of visible satellites with dual-frequency signals are unstable and not enough for dual-frequency Precise Point Positioning (PPP) processing all through the day. Therefore, the ionosphere-constrained single-frequency PPP model was employed to improve the positioning with the smartphones, and its performance was evaluated and compared with those of the Single Point Positioning (SPP) and the traditional PPP models. The results show that horizontal positioning accuracies of the smartphones with the improved PPP model are better than 1 m, while those with the SPP and the traditional PPP models are about 2 m. This article explores the feasibility of classifying coastal images under noisy labels. The state-of-the-art co-teaching paradigm in computer vision is exploited for processing remote sensing coastal images that are partially incorrectly labeled. The data with noisy labels are hard to learn and induce large loss values for a classifier. In the light of this observation, the co-teaching paradigm trains two identically structured but randomly initialized convolutional neural network (CNN) classifiers with stochastic optimization. Training of the two CNN classifiers is performed on mini-batches in an interactive and iterative manner. Specifically, the data with small loss values of one CNN classifier are used for updating the other CNN classifier in the next training iteration. The two CNN classifiers turn robust to noisy labels through the iterative process of teaching each other. Experimental evaluations on a coastal image dataset, i.e., the Moye Island remote sensing dataset, validate the effectiveness of the proposed coastal image classification strategy. Firstly, a convolutional neural network (CNN) produces fixed-length features from the coastal images. Secondly, the fixed-length features are fed into a long short-term memory (LSTM) to generate captions, i.e., the accurate and meaningful sentences. To predict complex flow, including transition on the windward side and massive separation on the leeward side, a Reynolds averaged Navier Stokes-Large Eddy Simulation (RANS-LES) hybrid model based on the three-equation k - ω - γ transition model (RANS-LES-Tr) was developed. Then, it was applied to simulate the following three cases, such as the low-speed flow past a cylinder only with the first transition mode, the low-speed prolate spheroid flow at a high angle of attack (AoA) with both the first and crossflow modes; and hypersonic flow past the "Orion" capsule with the first, second and crossflow modes. RANS-LES-Tr shows much better agreements with available measurements, such as skin friction and heat flux on the windward side, than RANS-LES based on the full turbulence model. Verticillium wilt is a severe plant disease that causes massive losses in multiple crops. Increasing the plant resistance to Verticillium wilt is a critical challenge worldwide. Here, we report that the hemibiotrophic Verticillium dahliae -secreted Asp f2-like protein VDAL causes leaf wilting when applied to cotton leaves in vitro but enhances the resistance to V. dahliae when overexpressed in Arabidopsis or cotton without affecting the plant growth and development. VDAL protein interacts with Arabidopsis E3 ligases plant U-box 25 (PUB25) and PUB26 and is ubiquitinated by PUBs in vitro. However, VDAL is not degraded by PUB25 or PUB26 in planta. Besides, the pub25 pub26 double mutant shows higher resistance to V. dahliae than the wild-type. PUBs interact with the transcription factor MYB6 in a yeast two-hybrid screen. MYB6 promotes plant resistance to Verticillium wilt while PUBs ubiquitinate MYB6 and mediate its degradation. VDAL competes with MYB6 for binding to PUBs, and the role of VDAL in increasing Verticillium wilt resistance depends on MYB6. Taken together, these results suggest that plants evolute a strategy to utilize the invaded effector protein VDAL to resist the V. dahliae infection without causing a hypersensitive response (HR); alternatively, hemibiotrophic pathogens may use some effectors to keep plant cells alive during its infection in order to take nutrients from host cells. This study provides the molecular mechanism for plants increasing disease resistance when overexpressing some effector proteins without inducing HR, and may promote searching for more genes from pathogenic fungi or bacteria to engineer plant disease resistance. Surface urban heat islands (SUHIs) have been investigated in many regions around the world, but little attention has been given with regard to SUHIs in South America. In this study, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) land surface temperature (LST) data was used to investigate the diurnal, seasonal, and interannual variations in the SUHI intensity (SUHII, the urban LST minus the rural LST) in 44 South American cities in different climate zones and types of rural land. To examine the effects of factors that may influence the SUHII, correlations between the SUHII and the enhanced vegetation index (EVI), urban area, population, altitude, and anthropogenic heat emissions were performed. The results showed that the SUHI effect was obvious in South America. The mean daytime SUHII was higher than the mean night-time SUHII in all areas except for the arid climate zone. In the daytime, the summer displayed a stronger SUHII in the warm temperate climate zone than the other seasons. The night-time SUHII showed less obvious seasonal variations. In addition, the surrounding land cover influenced the SUHII. During the day, the SUHII was therefore stronger in rural areas that were covered by forests than in other types of rural land. Interannually, most cities showed an insignificant temporal trend in the SUHII from 2003 to 2016. The daytime SUHII was significantly and negatively correlated with the ∆EVI (the urban EVI minus the rural EVI) across the 44 cities, but a poor relationship was observed at night. In addition, anthropogenic heat emissions were positively correlated with the night-time SUHII. Urban area, population, and altitude were weakly correlated with the SUHII, which suggested that these factors may not have a significant impact on the spatial variations in the SUHII in South America. Currently, effective crowd management based on the information provided by crowd monitoring systems is difficult as this information comes in at the moment adverse crowd movements are already occurring. Up to this moment, very little forecasting techniques have been developed that predict crowd flows a longer time period ahead. Moreover, most contemporary state estimation methods apply demanding pre-processing steps, such as map-matching. The objective of this paper is to design, train and benchmark a data-driven procedure to forecast crowd movements, which can in real-time predict crowd movement. This procedure entails two steps. The first step comprises of a cell sequence derivation method that allows the representation of spatially continuous GPS traces in terms of discrete cell sequences. The second step entails the training of a Recursive Neural Network (RNN) with a Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) and six benchmark models to forecast the next location of pedestrians. The RNN-GRU is found to outperform the other tested models. Some additional tests of the ability of the RNN-GRU to forecast illustrate that the RNN-GRU preserves its predictive power when a limited amount of data is used from the first few hours of a multi-day event and temporal information is incorporated in the cell sequences. Forest canopy cover (CC) directly and indirectly influences various processes of forest ecosystems. Airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) can be used to characterize forest spatial structures and further obtain estimates of forest CC. However, nonreturn laser pulses from targets of interest impact the estimation accuracy of forest CC. The objective of this article was to develop a novel method of estimating the nonreturn laser pulses to improve the estimation accuracy of forest CC using LiDAR data. The improved models for estimating forest CC were developed by introducing the loss ratio of laser pulses and a CC coefficient into the original models. The forest CC reference data were collected and used to validate the forest CC estimates. The results show that the loss ratio for forested areas was much higher than that for open ground areas. The range between the sensor and a target was a crucial factor that caused the loss of returns. The relationship between the range and the loss ratio was nonlinear in both open ground and forested areas. Compared with the original models, the improved models combining the loss ratio and the CC coefficient statistically significantly increased the estimation accuracy of the forest CC. Moreover, the forest CC estimates from the canopy height model (CHM) were more accurate than those from the height normalized point cloud (NPC) data. Summary: Background: Liver fibrosis is the strongest histological risk factor for liver‐related complications and mortality in metabolic dysfunction‐associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). Second harmonic generation/two‐photon excitation fluorescence (SHG/TPEF) is a powerful tool for label‐free two‐dimensional and three‐dimensional tissue visualisation that shows promise in liver fibrosis assessment. Aim: To investigate combining multi‐photon microscopy (MPM) and deep learning techniques to develop and validate a new automated quantitative histological classification tool, named AutoFibroNet (Automated Liver Fibrosis Grading Network), for accurately staging liver fibrosis in MAFLD. Methods: AutoFibroNet was developed in a training cohort that consisted of 203 Chinese adults with biopsy‐confirmed MAFLD. Three deep learning models (VGG16, ResNet34, and MobileNet V3) were used to train pre‐processed images and test data sets. Multi‐layer perceptrons were used to fuse data (deep learning features, clinical features, and manual features) to build a joint model. This model was then validated in two further independent cohorts. Results: AutoFibroNet showed good discrimination in the training set. For F0, F1, F2 and F3‐4 fibrosis stages, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUROC) of AutoFibroNet were 1.00, 0.99, 0.98 and 0.98. The AUROCs of F0, F1, F2 and F3‐4 fibrosis stages for AutoFibroNet in the two validation cohorts were 0.99, 0.83, 0.80 and 0.90 and 1.00, 0.83, 0.80 and 0.94, respectively, showing a good discriminatory ability in different cohorts. Tropospheric delay (TD) parameter estimation is a critical issue underlying high-precision data processing for global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs). The most widely used TD parameter estimation methods are the random walk (RW) and piece-wise constant (PWC). The RW method can effectively track rapid variations of tropospheric delay, but it may introduce excessive noise. In contrast, the PWC method introduces less noise, but it is less adaptable to cases of large variations of tropospheric delay. To address the problem of how to choose the optimal TD parameter estimation method, this paper investigates the variation patterns of international GNSS service zenith tropospheric delay (IGS ZTD) products and proposes a combined strategy model for TD parameter estimation. Firstly, this paper avoids the day-boundary jumps problem of IGS ZTD products by grouping based on single-day data. Secondly, this paper introduces discrete point areas (DPAs) to measure the magnitude of the ZTD values and uses comprehensive indicators to reflect the variation of ZTD. Next, based on the Köppen-Geiger climate classification, this study selected five different climate classifications with a total of 20 IGS stations as experimental data. The data assessed span from day of year (DOY) 001 to DOY 365 in 2022. This paper then applied 26 different parameter estimation strategies for static precise point positioning (PPP) data processing, and the parameter estimation strategies that were used include the RW and PWC (with the piece-wise constant ranging from twenty minutes to five hundred minutes at twenty-minute intervals). Finally, ZTD and positioning results were obtained using various parameter estimation methods, and a combined strategy model was established. We selected five different climate classifications of IGS stations as validation data and designed three sets of comparative experiments: RW, PWC120, and the combined strategy model, to verify the effectiveness of the combined strategy model. The experimental results revealed that: RW and the combined strategy model have a comparable ZTD accuracy and both are superior to PWC120. The combined strategy model improves the positioning accuracy in the U direction compared to RW and PWC120. In arid (B) and polar (E) regions with a small variation of TD, the PWC120 strategy displayed a better positioning accuracy than the RW strategy; in equatorial (A) and warm-temperate (C) regions, where there are large variations of TD, the RW strategy exhibited a better positioning accuracy than the PWC120 strategy. The combined strategy model can flexibly select the optimal parameter estimation method according to the comprehensive indicator while ensuring ZTD estimation accuracy; it enhances positioning accuracy. Background: Rowell syndrome (RS) is an uncommon condition characterized by erythema multiforme (EM)‐like lesions and lupus erythematosus. It is more common in females, and EM may be the first manifestation of the disease with positive autoantibodies, such as antinuclear antibody (ANA), SSA, SSB and rheumatoid factor. The pathogenesis of RS is unknown and is likely caused by drug induction, ultraviolet exposure and infection. Method: We describe a case of RS from China which presented as characteristic targetoid‐like lesions and chilblain‐like erythema on hands and feet. This is a case of RS in a female patient from the inpatient department of dermatology. Results: A 41‐year‐old female with systemic lupus erythematosus exhibited chilblain‐like erythema and characteristic EM lesions on her extremities. She tested positive for serum ANA (1:320) and anti‐double‐stranded DNA, as well as other autoantibodies. Systemic glucocorticoids and hydroxychloroquine worked effectively for her. Conclusion: The present case met diagnostic criteria of RS. Notably, there was a co‑occurrence of facial butterfly erythema, chilblain‐like erythema and EM lesions distributed on the limbs in this case. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to evaluate their potential application in phthalonitrile resins, these monomers were blended with 1,3-bis(3,4-dicyanophenoxy)benzene and 4-(4-aminophenoxy)phthalonitrile, then cured into polymers. Curing mechanisms of different prepolymers were proposed and compared, and processability, thermal and mechanical properties were characterized. The introduction of methoxyl units was found to postpone the curing, and thermal properties were slightly compromised. On the contrary, the usage of allyl was beneficial to both processability and thermal properties. More importantly, the impact strength for allyl-containing polymers could be as high as 13.63 kJ m−2, indicating such resin could be applied as high temperature structural composite matrices. The meiotic entry of undifferentiated germ cells is sexually specific and strictly regulated by the testicular or ovarian environment. Germline stem cells with a set of abnormal sex chromosomes and associated autosomes undergo defective meiotic processes and are eventually eliminated by yet to be defined post‐transcriptional modifications. Herein, we report the role of gsdf, a member of BMP/TGFβ family uniquely found in teleost, in the regulation of meiotic entry in medaka (Oryzias latipes) via analyses of gametogenesis in gsdf‐deficient XX and XY gonads in comparison with their wild‐type siblings. Several differentially expressed genes, including the FKB506‐binding protein 7 (fkbp7), were significantly upregulated in pubertal gsdf‐deficient gonads. The increase in alternative pre‐mRNA isoforms of meiotic synaptonemal complex gene sycp3 was visualized using Integrative Genomics Viewer and confirmed by real‐time qPCR. Nevertheless, immunofluorescence analysis showed that Sycp3 protein products reduced significantly in gsdf‐deficient XY oocytes. Transmission electron microscope observations showed that normal synchronous cysts were replaced by asynchronous cysts in gsdf‐deficient testis. Breeding experiments showed that the sex ratio deviation of gsdf−/− XY gametes in a non‐Mendelian manner might be due to the non‐segregation of XY chromosomes. Taken together, our results suggest that gsdf plays a role in the proper execution of cytoplasmic and nuclear events through receptor Smad phosphorylation and Sycp3 dephosphorylation to coordinate medaka gametogenesis, including sex‐specific mitotic divisions and meiotic recombination. There is a large amount of remote sensing data available for land use and land cover (LULC) classification and thus optimizing selection of remote sensing variables is a great challenge. Although many methods such as Jeffreys-Matusita (JM) distance and random forests (RF) have been developed for this purpose, the existing methods ignore correlation and information duplication among remote sensing variables. In this study, a novel approach was proposed to improve the measures of potential class separability for the selection of remote sensing variables by taking into account correlations among the variables. The proposed method was examined with a total of thirteen spectral variables from a Gaofen-1 image, three class separability measures including JM distance, transformed divergence and B-distance and three classifiers including Bayesian discriminant (BD), Mahalanobis distance (MD) and RF for classification of six LULC types at the East Dongting Lake of Hunan, China. The results showed that (1) The proposed approach selected the first three spectral variables and resulted in statistically stable classification accuracies for three improved class separability measures. That is, the classification accuracies using three or more spectral variables statistically did not significantly differ from each other at a significant level of 0.05; (2) The statistically stable classification accuracies obtained by integrating MD and BD classifiers with the improved class separability measures were also statistically not significantly different from those by RF; (3) The numbers of the selected spectral variables using the improved class separability measures to create the statistically stable classification accuracies by MD and BD classifiers were much smaller than those from the original class separability measures and RF; and (4) Three original class separability measures and RF led to similar ranks of importance of the spectral variables, while the ranks achieved by the improved class separability measures were different due to the consideration of correlations among the variables. This indicated that the proposed method more effectively and quickly selected the spectral variables to produce the statistically stable classification accuracies compared with the original class separability measures and RF and thus improved the selection of the spectral variables for the classification. Precise point positioning (PPP) can measure ground motions with a centimetre-level accuracy using only one receiver. It has been widely used in earthquake monitoring and earthquake early warning (EEW) systems. However, traditional PPP highly depends on well-established and robust internet infrastructure for data communication. Along with the broadcast ephemeris, the orbit and clock corrections transmitted by the B2b signals of BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) can be used to recover the precise products of GPS and BDS. Since the B2b products, namely the satellite state parameter messages, are accessible even without internet infrastructure, PPP with B2b signals is more suitable for real-time applications. This study witnesses the application of PPP with B2b products in seismic monitoring for the first time. The shake table experiments demonstrate that PPP with B2b can reach a millimetre-level accuracy in horizontal in earthquake monitoring for GPS-only, BDS-only and GPS/BDS combination. The application to the 2021 M w 7.4 Maduo earthquake shows that the accuracies of seismic displacements derived from GPS-only PPP with B2b products are 1.7, 2.4 and 1.7 cm in east, north and vertical components, compared with those from GPS-only PPP with final precise products. Objective: The primary aim was to assess associations between total steps per day and incident diabetes, whereas the secondary aim was to assess whether the intensity and/or cadence of steps is associated with incident diabetes.Research Design and Methods: Women without physician-diagnosed diabetes (n = 4,838; mean [SD] age 78.9 [6.7] years) were followed up to 6.9 years; 395 developed diabetes. Hip-worn ActiGraph GT3X+ accelerometers worn for 1 week enabled measures of total, light-intensity, and moderate- to vigorous-intensity (MV-intensity) steps per day. Using Cox proportional hazards analysis we modeled adjusted change in the hazard rate for incident diabetes associated with total, light-intensity, and MV-intensity steps per day. We further estimated the proportion of the steps-diabetes association mediated by BMI.Results: On average, participants took 3,729 (SD 2,114) steps/day, of which 1,875 (791) were light-intensity steps and 1,854 ± 1,762 were MV-intensity. More steps per day were associated with a lower hazard rate for incident diabetes. Confounder-adjusted models for a 2,000 steps/day increment yielded hazard ratio (HR) 0.88 (95% CI 0.78-1.00; P = 0.046). After further adjustment for BMI, HR was 0.90 (95% CI 0.80-1.02; P = 0.11). BMI did not significantly mediate the steps-diabetes association (proportion mediated = 17.7% [95% CI -55.0 to 142.0]; P = 0.09]). The relationship between MV-intensity steps per day (HR 0.86 [95% CI 0.74-1.00]; P = 0.04) and incident diabetes was stronger than for light-intensity steps per day (HR 0.97 [95% CI 0.73-1.29]; P = 0.84).Conclusions: These findings suggest that for older adults, more steps per day are associated with lower incident diabetes and MV-intensity steps are most strongly associated with a lower hazard of diabetes. Increasing the area of planted forests is rather important for compensation the loss of natural forests and slowing down the global warming. Forest growing stem volume (GSV) is a key indicator for monitoring and evaluating the quality of planted forest. To improve the accuracy of planted forest GSV located in south China, four L-band ALOS PALSAR-2 quad-polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images were acquired from June to September with short intervals. Polarimetric characteristics (un-fused and fused) derived by the Yamaguchi decomposition from time series SAR images with different intervals were considered as independent variables for the GSV estimation. Then, the general linear model (GLM) obeyed the exponential distribution were proposed to retrieve the stand-level GSV in plantation. The results show that the un-fused power of double bounce scatters and four fused variables derived from single SAR image is highly sensitive to the GSV, and these polarimeric characteristics derived from the time series images more significantly contribute to improved estimation of GSV. Moreover, compared with the estimated GSV using the semi-exponential model, the employed GLM model with less limitations and simple algorithm has a higher saturation level (nearly to 300 m3/ha) and higher sensitivity to high forest GSV values than the semi-exponential model. Furthermore, by reducing the external disturbance with the help of time average, the accuracy of estimated GSV is improved using fused polarimeric characteristics, and the estimation accuracy of forest GSV was improved as the images increase. Using the fused polarimetric characteristics (Dbl×Vol/Odd) and the GLM, the minimum RRMSE was reduced from 33.87% from single SAR image to 24.42% from the time series SAR images. It is implied that the GLM is more suitable for polarimetric characteristics derived from the time series SAR images and has more potential to improve the planted forest GSV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

China has been facing serious land degradation and desertification in its north and northwest arid and semi-arid areas. Monitoring the dynamics of percentage vegetation cover (PVC) using remote sensing imagery in these areas has become critical. However, because these areas are large, remote, and sparsely populated, and also because of the existence of mixed pixels, there have been no accurate and cost-effective methods available for this purpose. Spectral unmixing methods are a good alternative as they do not need field data and are low cost. However, traditional linear spectral unmixing (LSU) methods lack the ability to capture the characteristics of spectral reflectance and scattering from endmembers and their interactions within mixed pixels. Moreover, existing nonlinear spectral unmixing methods, such as random forest (RF) and radial basis function neural network (RBFNN), are often costly because they require field measurements of PVC from a large number of training samples. In this study, a cost-effective approach to mapping PVC in arid and semi-arid areas was proposed. A method for selection and purification of endmembers mainly based on Landsat imagery was first presented. A probability-based spectral unmixing analysis (PBSUA) and a probability-based optimized k nearest-neighbors (PBOkNN) approach were then developed to improve the mapping of PVC in Duolun County in Inner Mongolia, China, using Landsat 8 images and field data from 920 sample plots. The proposed PBSUA and PBOkNN methods were further validated in terms of accuracy and cost-effectiveness by comparison with two LSU methods, with and without purification of endmembers, and two nonlinear approaches, RF and RBFNN. The cost-effectiveness was defined as the reciprocal of cost timing relative root mean square error (RRMSE). The results showed that (1) Probability-based spectral unmixing analysis (PBSUA) was most cost-effective and increased the cost-effectiveness by 29.3% 29.3%, 33.5%, 50.8%, and 53.0% compared with two LSU methods, PBOkNN, RF, and RBFNN, respectively; (2) PBSUA, RF, and RBFNN gave RRMSE values of 22.9%, 21.8%, and 22.8%, respectively, which were not significantly different from each other at the significance level of 0.05. Compatibly, PBOkNN and LSU methods with and without purification of endmembers resulted in significantly greater RRMSE values of 27.5%, 32.4%, and 43.3%, respectively; (3) the average estimates of the sample plots and predicted maps from PBSUA, PBOkNN, RF, and RBFNN fell in the confidence interval of the test plot data, but those from two LSU methods did not, although the LSU with purification of endmembers improved the PVC estimation accuracy by 25.2% compared with the LSU without purification of endmembers. For the planning and sustainable management of forest resources, well-managed plantations are of great significance to mitigate the decrease of forested areas. Monitoring these planted forests is essential for forest resource inventories. In this study, two ALOS PALSAR-2 quad-polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images and ground measurements were employed to estimate growing stem volume (GSV) of Chinese fir plantations located in a hilly area of southern China. To investigate the relationships between forest GSV and polarization characteristics, single and fused variables were derived by the Yamaguchi decomposition and the saturation value of GSV was estimated using a semi-exponential empirical model as a base model. Based on the estimated saturation values and relative root mean square error (RRMSE), the single and fused characteristics and corresponding models were selected and integrated, which led to a novel saturation-based multivariate method used to improve the GSV estimation and mapping of Chinese fir plantations. The new findings included: (1) All the original polarimetric characteristics, statistically, were not significantly correlated with the forest GSV, and their logarithm and ratio transformation fused variables greatly improved the correlations, thus the estimation accuracy of the forest GSV. (2) The logarithm transformation of surface scattering resulted in the greatest saturation, value but the logarithm transformation of double-bounce scattering resulted in the smallest RRMSE of the GSV estimates. (3) Compared with the single transformations, the fused variables led to more reasonable saturation values and obviously reduced the values of RRMSE. (4) The saturation-based multivariate method led to more accurate estimates of the forest GSV than the univariate method, with the smallest value (29.64%) of RRMSE achieved using the set of six variables. Estimating the net primary production (NPP) of vegetation is essential for eco-environment conservation and carbon cycle research. Remote sensing techniques, combined with algorithm models, have been proven to be promising methods for NPP estimation. High-precision and real-time NPP monitoring in heterogeneous areas requires high spatio-temporal resolution remote sensing data, which are not easy to acquire by single remote sensors, especially in cloudy weather. This study proposes to fuse images of different sensors to provide high spatio-temporal resolution data for NPP estimation in cloud-prone areas. Firstly, the time series Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) with a spatial resolution of 30 m and a temporal resolution of 16 days, are obtained by the enhanced spatial and temporal adaptive reflectance fusion model (ESTARFM). Then, the time series NDVI data, combined with meteorological data are input into an improved Carnegie–Ames–Stanford Approach (CASA) model for NPP estimation. This method is validated by a case study of a heavily urbanized area, in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River in China. The results indicate that the NPP estimated by the fused NDVI data has more detailed spatial information than by using the MODIS data. The results show a strong correlation between the actual Landsat8 NDVI and the fused NDVI images, which means that the accuracy of synthetic NDVI images (a 16 day interval and a 30 m resolution) is reliable, and it can provide superior inputs for accurate estimations of a NPP time series. The correlation coefficient (R) and root mean square error between the NPP, based on the fused NDVI and the measured NPP, are 0.66 and 14.280 g C/(m2·yr), respectively, indicating a good consistency. The small discrepancy is caused by the uncertainties of fused NDVI, measurement errors, conversion errors, and other factors in the CASA model. In this study, we achieved NPP with high spatial and temporal resolutions, which can provide higher accuracies of NPP data for analyzing the carbon cycling heavily urbanized areas, compared with similar studies using mono-temporal NPP data. The spatio-temporal fusion technique is an effective way of generating high spatio-temporal resolution images from different sensors, thereby providing enough data for NPP monitoring in urbanized areas. Rice is one of the world's major staple foods, especially in China. Highly accurate monitoring on rice-producing land is, therefore, crucial for assessing food supplies and productivity. Recently, the deep-learning convolutional neural network (CNN) has achieved considerable success in remote-sensing data analysis. A CNN-based paddy-rice mapping method using the multitemporal Landsat 8, phenology data, and land-surface temperature (LST) was developed during this study. First, the spatial–temporal adaptive reflectance fusion model (STARFM) was used to blend the moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Landsat data for obtaining multitemporal Landsat-like data. Subsequently, the threshold method is applied to derive the phenological variables from the Landsat-like (Normalized difference vegetation index) NDVI time series. Then, a generalized single-channel algorithm was employed to derive LST from the Landsat 8. Finally, multitemporal Landsat 8 spectral images, combined with phenology and LST data, were employed to extract paddy-rice information using a patch-based deep-learning CNN algorithm. The results show that the proposed method achieved an overall accuracy of 97.06% and a Kappa coefficient of 0.91, which are 6.43% and 0.07 higher than that of the support vector machine method, and 7.68% and 0.09 higher than that of the random forest method, respectively. Moreover, the Landsat-derived rice area is strongly correlated (R2 = 0.9945) with government statistical data, demonstrating that the proposed method has potential in large-scale paddy-rice mapping using moderate spatial resolution images. Land degradation and desertification in arid and semi-arid areas is of great concern. Accurately mapping percentage vegetation cover (PVC) of the areas is critical but challenging because the areas are often remote, sparsely vegetated, and rarely populated, and it is difficult to collect field observations of PVC. Traditional methods such as regression modeling cannot provide accurate predictions of PVC in the areas. Nonparametric constant k-nearest neighbors (Cons_kNN) has been widely used in estimation of forest parameters and is a good alternative because of its flexibility. However, using a globally constant k value in Cons_kNN limits its ability of increasing prediction accuracy because the spatial variability of PVC in the areas leads to spatially variable k values. In this study, a novel method that spatially optimizes determining the spatially variable k values of Cons_kNN, denoted with Opt_kNN, was proposed to map the PVC in both Duolun and Kangbao County located in Inner Mongolia and Hebei Province of China, respectively, using Landsat 8 images and sample plot data. The Opt_kNN was compared with Cons_kNN, a linear stepwise regression (LSR), a geographically weighted regression (GWR), and random forests (RF) to improve the mapping for the study areas. The results showed that (1) most of the red and near infrared band relevant vegetation indices derived from the Landsat 8 images had significant contributions to improving the mapping accuracy; (2) compared with LSR, GWR, RF and Cons_kNN, Opt_kNN resulted in consistently higher prediction accuracies of PVC and decreased relative root mean square errors by 5%, 11%, 5%, and 3%, respectively, for Duolun, and 12%, 1%, 23%, and 9%, respectively, for Kangbao. The Opt_kNN also led to spatially variable and locally optimal k values, which made it possible to automatically and locally optimize k values; and (3) the RF that has become very popular in recent years did not perform the predictions better than the Opt_kNN for the both areas. Estimating individual tree diameters at breast height (DBH) from delineated crowns and tree heights on the basis of airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data provides a good opportunity for large-scale forest inventory. Generally, ground-based measurements are more accurate, but LiDAR data and derived DBH values can be obtained over larger areas for a relatively smaller cost if a right procedure is developed. A nonlinear least squares (NLS) regression is not an appropriate approach to predict the aboveground biomass (AGB) of individual trees from the estimated DBH because both the response variable and the regressor are subject to measurement errors. In this study, a system of compatible individual tree DBH and AGB error-in-variable models was developed using error-in-variable regression techniques based on both airborne LiDAR and field-measured datasets of individual Picea crassifolia Kom. trees, collected in northwestern China. Two parameter estimation algorithms, i.e., the two-stage error-in-variable model (TSEM) and the nonlinear seemingly unrelated regression (NSUR), were proposed for estimating the parameters in the developed system of compatible individual tree DBH and AGB error-in-variable models. Moreover, two model structures were applied to estimate AGB for comparison purposes: NLS with AGB estimation depending on DBH (NLS&DD) and NLS with AGB estimation not depending on DBH (NLS&NDD). The results showed that both TSEM and NSUR led to almost the same parameter estimates for the developed system. Moreover, the developed system effectively accounted for the inherent correlation between DBH and AGB as well as for the effects of measurement errors in the DBH on the predictions of AGB, whereas NLS&DD and NLS&NDD did not. A leave-one-out cross-validation indicated that the prediction accuracy of the developed system of compatible individual tree DBH and AGB error-in-variable models with NSUR was the highest among those estimated by the four methods evaluated, but, statistically, the accuracy improvement was not significantly different from zero. The main reason might be that, except for the measurement errors, other source errors were ignored in the modeling. This study implies that, overall, the proposed method provides the potential to expand the estimations of both DBH and AGB from individual trees to stands by combining the error-in-variable modeling and LiDAR data and improve their estimation accuracies, but its application needs to be further validated by conducting a systematical uncertainty analysis of various source errors in a future study. In this study, an individual tree crown ratio (CR) model was developed with a data set from a total of 3134 Mongolian oak (Quercus mongolica) trees within 112 sample plots allocated in Wangqing Forest Bureau of northeast China. Because of high correlation among the observations taken from the same sampling plots, the random effects at levels of both blocks defined as stands that have different site conditions and plots were taken into account to develop a nested two-level nonlinear mixed-effect model. Various stand and tree characteristics were assessed to explore their contributions to improvement of model prediction. Diameter at breast height, plot dominant tree height and plot dominant tree diameter were found to be significant predictors. Exponential model with plot dominant tree height as a predictor had a stronger ability to account for the heteroskedasticity. When random effects were modeled at block level alone, the correlations among the residuals remained significant. These correlations were successfully reduced when random effects were modeled at both block and plot levels. The random effects from the interaction of blocks and sample plots on tree CR were substantially large. The model that took into account both the block effect and the interaction of blocks and sample plots had higher prediction accuracy than the one with the block effect and population average considered alone. Introducing stand density into the model through dummy variables could further improve its prediction. The degradation of permafrost in the Earth's cold regions due to climate warming and human activities is of increasing concern because of its impact on ecosystems and land management, thus, monitoring the degradation becomes critical. This study aimed to demonstrate a method in which Sentinel-1 DInSAR and MODIS data were combined to estimate and map seasonal and long-term land surface deformation (subsidence/uplifting) and permafrost active layer thickness (ALT) in Donnelly Training Area (DTA) in Alaska. The coherence (similarity) between the paired SAR images was analyzed for their applicability. A sensitivity analysis and accuracy assessment of the estimates were conducted to account for their quality. Results showed that the estimated seasonal subsidence mainly occurring in June and July was in the range of 0 to −0.43 m, while the estimated uplifting mainly happening from September to May of next year was as great as +0.34 m. Moreover, the estimated long-term (2015 to 2018) subsidence and uplifting were mostly distributed in the southern and northern parts of DTA, respectively. The spatially variable time delays led to the ALT estimates greater along the east river and in the west and south parts, and smaller in the north parts. At the significance level of 0.05, the coherence estimates of the paired images were significantly different from zero and compared with the referenced predictions from a widely used annual prediction model, the average residual of the ALT estimates did not significantly differ from zero at the significance level of 0.05. The spatial distributions of the uncertainties for the seasonal surface deformation estimates were similar to those of the input uncertainties from the estimates of model coefficients, the phase change, the modelling error, and the image pairs. Thus, the DInSAR image based method coupled with MODIS data offered the potential of mapping and monitoring the dynamics of permafrost environment for the cold regions such as DTA in which collecting field observations is difficult and costly. For the same antenna type, numerical differences among the phase center correction (PCC) models released by different institutes can reach several millimeters, which is far beyond the nominal calibration accuracy. This contribution introduces a new method to evaluate the consistency of these PCC models. We first investigated the coupling of phase center offset (PCO) and phase center variation (PCV) through simulation experiments, and the results show that the calibrated PCO values under different strategies may result in large differences, and so do PCV values due to strong coupling with PCO. This is further confirmed by field calibration experiments. Moreover, a new datum parameter is introduced to equivalently transform the PCC models to assess the consistency of PCC models of the same antenna type calibrated under different strategies or by different facilities. It is also essential to perform consistency analysis of PCC models in the coordinate domain. We further investigated these PCC models through a simulated positioning experiment. The results show that millimeter-level consistency of PCC models will lead to the same level of positioning precision in the coordinate domain. Moreover, as a comparison, both baseline positioning and PPP were performed with an antenna-type JAV_RINGANT_G3T NONE based on real observations. Multiday results showed that the average RMS of the positioning differences between PCC models from robot and anechoic chamber calibration is less than 1 mm for the baseline solution and 4 mm for the PPP solution, although the PCC model differences can reach 6 mm in L1 and 4 mm in L2, respectively. Finally, we also investigated the distribution of position biases without PCC or with inaccurate PCC. Considering the actual GPS constellation, we found that position biases have a strong correlation with latitude, if PCV values fluctuate greatly with the users' elevation angle. For earthquake and tsunami early warning and emergency response, earthquake magnitude is the crucial parameter to be determined rapidly and correctly. However, a reliable and rapid measurement of the magnitude of an earthquake is a challenging problem, especially for large earthquakes (M > 8). Here, the magnitude is determined based on the GPS displacement waveform derived from real-time precise point positioning (RTPPP). RTPPP results are evaluated with an accuracy of 1 cm in the horizontal components and 2–3 cm in the vertical components, indicating that the RTPPP is capable of detecting seismic waves with amplitude of 1 cm horizontally and 2–3 cm vertically with a confidence level of 95 per cent. In order to estimate the magnitude, the unique information provided by the GPS displacement waveform is the horizontal peak displacement amplitude. We show that the empirical relation of Gutenberg (1945) between peak displacement and magnitude holds up to nearly magnitude 9.0 when displacements are measured with GPS. We tested the proposed method for three large earthquakes. For the 2010 Mw 7.2 El Mayor-Cucapah earthquake, our method provides a magnitude of M7.18 ± 0.18. For the 2011 Mw 9.0 Tohoku-oki earthquake the estimated magnitude is M8.74 ± 0.06, and for the 2010 Mw 8.8 Maule earthquake the value is M8.7 ± 0.1 after excluding some near-field stations. We, therefore, conclude that depending on the availability of high-rate GPS observations, a robust value of magnitude up to 9.0 for a point source earthquake can be estimated within tens of seconds or a few minutes after an event using a few GPS stations close to the epicentre. Northern China has been long threatened by aeolian desertification. In recent years, all levels of the Chinese government have performed a series of ecological protection and sand control projects. To grasp the implementation effects of these projects and adjust policies in time, it is necessary to understand the process of aeolian desertification quickly and accurately. Remote sensing technologies play an irreplaceable role in aeolian desertification monitoring. In this study, the Zhenglan Banner, which is in the hinterland of the Hunshandake Sandy Land, was considered as the research area. Based on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images, ground survey data, and Landsat images called in Google Earth Engine (GEE), the aeolian desertified land (ADL) in 2000, 2004, 2010, 2015, and 2019 was extracted using spectral mixture analysis. A desertification index (DI) was constructed to evaluate the spatial and temporal dynamics of the ADL in the Zhenglan Banner. Finally, a residual analysis explored the driving forces of aeolian desertification. The results showed that (1) the ADL area in the Zhenglan Banner has been trending downwards over the past 20 years but rebounded from 2004 to 2010; (2) over the past 20 years, the area of slightly, moderately, and severely desertified land has decreased at annual rates of 0.4%, 2.7%, and 3.4%, respectively; (3) human activities had significantly positive and negative impacts on the aeolian desertification trend for 20.0% and 21.0% of the study area, respectively, but not for the rest. Forest growing stem volume (GSV) reflects the richness of forest resources as well as the quality of forest ecosystems. Remote sensing technology enables robust and efficient GSV estimation as it greatly reduces the survey time and cost while facilitating periodic monitoring. Given its red edge bands and a short revisit time period, Sentinel-2 images were selected for the GSV estimation in Wangyedian forest farm, Inner Mongolia, China. The variable combination was shown to significantly affect the accuracy of the estimation model. After extracting spectral variables, texture features, and topographic factors, a stepwise random forest (SRF) method was proposed to select variable combinations and establish random forest regressions (RFR) for GSV estimation. The linear stepwise regression (LSR), Boruta, Variable Selection Using Random Forests (VSURF), and random forest (RF) methods were then used as references for comparison with the proposed SRF for selection of predictors and GSV estimation. Combined with the observed GSV data and the Sentinel-2 images, the distributions of GSV were generated by the RFR models with the variable combinations determined by the LSR, RF, Boruta, VSURF, and SRF. The results show that the texture features of Sentinel-2's red edge bands can significantly improve the accuracy of GSV estimation. The SRF method can effectively select the optimal variable combination, and the SRF-based model results in the highest estimation accuracy with the decreases of relative root mean square error by 16.4%, 14.4%, 16.3%, and 10.6% compared with those from the LSR-, RF-, Boruta-, and VSURF-based models, respectively. The GSV distribution generated by the SRF-based model matched that of the field observations well.
