The paper approaches school parades on national commemorations in Greece as a 'text' for storing and transmitting cultural meanings and value hierarchies. The study is based on policy documents and participant observation. The detailed Ministry instructions on how schools should select students for the parade may be viewed as instructions on how to manage dimensions of diversity. Two such dimensions are tallness and achievement, established by law as selection criteria. The latter could point to both intellectual abilities and effort. However, because of the dominance of effort in Greek educational rhetoric, achievement comes to be perceived mainly as an indicator of moral qualities, e.g. hard work. The selected students are distributed along the body of the parade according to 'syntactic' rules, i.e. mainly 'firstness'. Skilful management of bodily and moral 'diversity' makes underlying value hierarchies explicit, thus producing cultural meanings and turning the parade into a text about the nation. Summary: The European Somnologist certification programme was developed by the European Sleep Research Society to improve patient care in sleep medicine by providing an independent evaluation of theoretical and practical knowledge. The examination of eligible experts plays a key role in this procedure. A process was started more than 15 years ago to create the European sleep medicine curriculum, eligibility criteria for certification, and sleep centre accreditation criteria. The process was characterised by interdisciplinary collaboration, consensus, and achieving new solutions. During the past 10 years, experience has been gained by the examination and certification of more than 1000 sleep medicine experts from more than 50 countries. The process has continuously been improved. However, as the programme was designed and administered mainly by medical experts in the field, systematic influence from teaching and pedagogic experts was partially underrepresented. The current critical appraisal pinpoints several missing links in the process – mainly as a missing constructive alignment between learning objectives, learning and teaching activities, and the final assessment. Purpose - This paper aims to offer a personal view of the changes that have occurred regarding the transition from education into the world of work during the past 50 years. Design/methodology/approach - The approach taken is that of contrasting how this transition was made in the 1950s to how things happen now in a much more competitive world. In what ways can a community music education project based on historical re-enactment be a vehicle for transformational learning, empowerment and reconnection with community? In 2018, Serenading Adela was performed to celebrate and remember the 100th anniversary of a moment in history when women sang under the prison cell window of Adela Pankhurst, an anti-conscriptionist. The operatic work, which recruited 100 adult participants, was conceived and developed over almost 2 years and rehearsed for 5 months. The researchers were interested in participants' motivations and their experiences of engagement with a story of historical injustice. Data were collected by holding interviews and focus groups and analysed using thematic analysis informed by Freirean concepts. Five themes emerged, indicating that the pedagogical approach and ideologies of the directors enabled and nurtured collaborative connections, personal growth, new perspectives, meaning-making and empowerment for a diverse group of adults. The year 2015 marks the twentieth anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, with a goal to contribute to gender equality globally. As scholars continue in their quest to ‘take stock’ of the ways in which gender and education work in tandem to achieve greater gender equality, we observe a revival in interest regarding conversations on gender and education. These conversations cover a gamut of related issues, including teaching and achievement as well as a number of intersecting issues such as gender-based violence. Within the conversation has been a continued focus on the role of equity primarily defined as access and opportunity. This paper explores the context of quality as it relates to equity in education and addresses the problems that are still left on the margins. This paper develops some considerations on mourning and memory of the Shoah, for the occasion of the Holocaust Memorial Day. It is argued that an educational model for awareness in confronting the collective drama of the Shoah could fully integrate the memory with an analysis of the social processes that still create the development and spread of racism in society, with particular attention to the symbolic meaning evocative of minorities in the processes of social integration. This paper analyzes the official proposal for recent history teaching. For such purpose, we draw on national education laws (1993 and 2006), the curricula approved from 1995 to present for the secondary level (at the national level and at the Province of Buenos Aires) and regulations of the commemorations--especially March 24th and September 16th--. This analysis will be made in relation to the representations of memory and the progress of historiography about recent past, to consider up to what extent school contents have witnessed an impact due to changes in these narratives. This article explores the establishment of Queen Elizabeth School (QES), the first government secondary school for girls in Northern Nigeria in 1956, and commemorations in 1961, 1981 and 2016. Connecting past and present, several invented traditions were deployed to socialise students, secure QES's reputation and status, and foster national unity among Nigeria's diverse peoples. In 1961, British Woman Education Officer Kathleen Player, the foundation principal, highlighted QES's alignment with the traditions of the British Public school and its commitment to 'unity in diversity' following Nigeria's independence in 1960. She was honoured during QES's twenty-fifth anniversary in 1981, and new traditions promoted institutional and national loyalties. However, the 2016 commemoration coincided with the fiftieth anniversary of the assassination of Sir Ahmado Bello, the Premier of Northern Nigeria (1954-1966). In this context, Player's legacy and the colonial past were marginalised in favour of Bello as founder of QES and symbol of national unity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses about the twentieth anniversary of the "Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry". According to the article, the journal was introduced by Mr. Brian Decker, owner of B.C. Decker publishing Inc. in 1988. It was the first peer-reviewed journal focused exclusively on the emerging area of aesthetic dentistry during those times.

This article concentrates on visual sources relating to secondary education, and asks how a collection of photographs can be understood and interpreted as part of the institutional and collective memory of one Finnish girls’ school. The photographs were published in the anniversary books of the school. They construct an entirety, where public memories are interwoven with individual and private reminiscences. The article examines how the traditions of jubilee books and the institutional setting of the school establish the boundaries for the visual narratives of the collection and how the self-image and identity of the school and its gendered nature are visualised in the corpus. The long period (1882–2007) opens up possibilities for studying how the changes in the Finnish education system and the alteration of the girls’ school to a co-educational school are presented in the photographs, and how these photographs create the imagery of gender, class, equality and co-education. This year the education research community in New Zealand is celebrating fifty years of the publication of the New Zealand Journal of Educational Studies. In this article, it is argued that the half century has been bifurcated by the shift from social democratic discourses of equality for all, to a market choice model of schooling after 1989. This article will explore the social and institutional effects of the policy change on the schooling system, especially in the context of a more unequal society. Key findings include the general diaspora, especially but not only by pākehā, from low decile schools. Schools in the bottom four deciles are all now much smaller on average than twenty-five years ago, and there is no sign of that unequalising process slowing down. Those schools are likely to be very heavily populated with children whose families live below the poverty line. There are social, ethnic and educational implications of the school population shift. The journal of the Housing Education and Research Association, Housing and Society, reached its 40th year of publication in 2013. This article analyzes the content of the journal over those years and the use of the journal by other authors. The majority of the articles published in Housing and Society has focused on housing issues related to elderly persons and residential satisfaction. Ten housing scholars are represented as authors in 26% of the articles. Based on Google Scholar, researchers have cited articles in Housing and Society increasingly since its inception. In addition to Housing and Society itself, the journal articles that have cited a Housing and Society article most frequently were in the Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal and the Journal of Housing for the Elderly. The article presents a history of the journal "History of Political Economy" ("HOPE") which largely focuses on the role of journal editor and professor Craufurd Goodwin in its forty-year development. The author provides biographical information on Goodwin, emphasizing his career as an economics scholar and academic administrator. The importance of the professionalization of the study of economics, as represented by the formation of the History of Economics Society, to the success of "HOPE" is explained as well. The 50th anniversary of Transportation Journal represents a key milestone for transportation and logistics professionals. During the last 50 years, the profession has emerged from what Peter Drucker (1962, 103) aptly described as the "Dark Continent" to one in which transportation or logistics frequently appears in the title of senior executives. Transportation Journal and the American Society of Transportation and Logistics (AST&L) have played key roles in this transformation by promoting education and preparing individuals for careers in the profession. Not only did renowned universities such as those of Paris, Berlin or Vienna function as models in Europe, but also the smaller Nordic universities were regularly referred to as examples being worthy of imitation. The esteem in which Swedish universities were held especially received an important boost when representatives from all of the European universities visited Uppsala in 1877, on the occasion of the quatercentenary of this institution. How and to what extent did Nordic universities function as examples in the reform of the higher education system in countries such as Belgium, France, Scotland or Russia? Although the sources do not permit to answer this question definitely, the article still aims to modify and complete the idea of an exclusive predominance of the German university model in Europe at the end of the 19th century. The article presents greetings from the Advisory Board members of the "European Education" journal in relation to the journal's 40th anniversary. Karin Amos of the University of Tübingen in Germany said that the journal offers wonderful opportunities to deepen and broaden the transatlantic exchange. Ari Antikainen of the University of Joensuu in Finland noted that the journal has depicted a picture of the versatility of European education for over forty years. Meanwhile, Kara Brown of the University of South Carolina stressed that the journal's 40th anniversary celebration reminds the members of the enduring academic significance and interest in the region.

Anniversaries are occasions for celebration and reflection. The thirtieth anniversary of BISA presents the opportunity to look back over what has been achieved in the eventful years since the foundation of the Association, but also the duty of identifying things that have gone wrong, paths not taken or promising avenues that turned out to be dead-ends. We owe it to the people who founded BISA – some still here, others, sadly, gone – to preserve the critical spirit even when celebrating our achievements, and I will certainly honour that debt in this talk. While American Program Bureau, Incorporated is celebrating its fortieth anniversary with a release of its illustrated directory that features speakers for the college and diversity markets. Meanwhile, Americans for Informed Democracy announces that it seeks to promote global awareness among American youth through its "Education for Democracy," a program for K-12 classrooms. Lastly, Criticas, a U.S. English magazine devoted to the Spanish-language market announces its launching of an improved web site at www.criticasmagazine.com.

The journal, Higher Education (HE), was established in 1972 and is currently one of the leading international journals in higher education studies. By using bibliometric techniques, a systematic review, and a social network analysis, this review article provides an overview of the main patterns of publications in HE during its history. The findings show that (i) the volume of articles has been continuously increasing, with a particular marked uplift since 2007; (ii) while single-authored articles have dominated the publication pattern, collaborative articles have shown a particular growth over the last decade; (iii) the USA, the UK, and Australia have dominated the journal in terms of the number of articles, international collaboration, and the most prolific authors; (iv) while Chinese authors have become more evident, there has been a near-absence of contributions from Latin America, Eastern Europe, and most of Africa; (v) in the entire history of HE, there has been a gender imbalance (in favour of male authors) across the most cited articles, but this pattern has changed in the last decade and; (vi) both teaching and learning and system policy have been key research themes in the journal although internationalisation and the student experience have recently gained traction.
