The fifty-sixth annual conference of the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) was held at the Hilton Montreal Bonaventure in Montreal, Quebec on May 17 to 20, 2001. The conference theme was Making Connections. Some eight hundred public opinion researchers accepted the invitation to meet colleagues and friends and to participate in the interdisciplinary program. The special character of the annual conference clearly distinguishes it from other professional meetings. Despite steady growth in attendance over recent years, it is a relatively small conference. Its limited duration, its submission review process and its carefully variegated slate of paper session topics constrain the number of opportunities for being on the program. With the traditional meals and social events, the AAPOR conference presents a higher quality, more intimate and more interdisciplinary experience than can be found at many academic, governmental, or commercial meetings. The structure of the meeting limits, among other things, opportunities to attract new AAPOR members, the willingness of exhibitors and publishers to display their wares, the range of topics covered in the program and the conference revenue that AAPOR could employ for worthwhile purposes.

The IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (IEEE MTT-S) International Microwave Symposium (IMS) was held in Montreal, QC, Canada, on June 17?22, 2012, and the conference Chair introduced several exciting ideas to stimulate paper submissions to the conference. First, the conference committee made a determined effort to increase publicity, especially in Asia. Second, and definitely more controversial, they reduced the paper length from the traditional four pages to three pages. The thought behind this was that it would make it easier for authors to write a journal paper based on the conference paper because the conference paper would not contain as much technical information. Thus, the authors would have an easier time meeting the IEEE MTT-S threshold that every paper, whether conference or journal, must present substantially new technical material. There were a record number of submissions to the IEEE MTT-S IMS, and there were a record number of submissions to this TRANSACTIONS' "Special Issue on the 2012 International Microwave Symposium." In fact, there were too many submissions for the reviewers, the Associate Editors, and me to complete all of the papers before the deadline for the December issue. Therefore, I have divided the IEEE MTT-S IMS "Special Issue on the 2012 International Microwave Symposium" into two parts, which will be published in this TRANSACTIONS' December 2012 and January 2013 issues. In the January 2013 Special Issue, the Editor-in-Chief will write a full editorial detailing the number of papers, the acceptance rate, and my opinion on the success or failure of the three-page experiment. Information about the activities conducted at the 29th Electrical Insulation Conference (EIC) held on May 31, 2009 to June 3, 2009 in Montréal, Quebec is presented. IEEE International Symposium on Robotic and Sensors Environments (ROSE 2011) was held on September 17?18, 2011, at Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, in Montreal, QC, Canada. ROSE 2011 was the first opportunity for the conference series to be conducted as an IEEE Symposium, following a sustained and successful number of ROSE Workshop venues from 2003 to 2010, that took place in Europe, Canada, and the USA. Following the tradition established in 2003, the ROSE Symposium addresses all aspects of sensing systems and technologies for robotics and industrial automation, as well as their impact on autonomous robotic and intelligent systems development and applications. At ROSE 2011, 41 papers presenting contributions of high quality were presented, addressing the diversity of problems and applications that combine sensors, decision systems, and robots. Following the symposium, a number of substantially extended manuscripts, inspired by papers presented at ROSE 2011, and addressing topics of particular relevance for the IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, were submitted and went through a rigorous peerreview process, identical to that of regular paper submissions. The 34th Electrical Insulation Conference was held June 19 to 22, 2016, at the Hotel Bonaventure in Montreal, Canada. Even in tough economic times, Montreal is still popular; we were able to hold the line on attendance, with 259 participants from different countries covering all major continents. A total of 311 abstracts were submitted, resulting in a final program of 151 papers, 49 of which were presented in two poster sessions. The conference opened on Sunday with two fullday and one half-day short courses offered by technical experts. These courses were On-Site and Laboratory Partial Discharge by Tom Prevost and William Hu, Effect of Inverter Fed Drives on Rotating Machine Electrical Insulation by Greg Stone, and Forensic Analysis of Insulation and System Failures by Howard Penrose. The first poster session, with 30 posters on display, was held on Sunday evening as part of the welcoming reception. The oral sessions opened on Monday morning. Bernard Noirhomme, the Conference Chair, welcomed the attendees and then yielded the floor to Stephane Lemieux, Scientific Director of the Research Institute of Hydro-Quebec, who talked about the importance of research on electrical insulation for Hydro-Quebec. Implementation and funding mechanisms to reverse biodiversity loss formed the core of the discussion focusing on the Post‐2020 Global Biodiversity Framework ("the Framework"), at the 15th Conference of Parties at the Convention on Biological Diversity hosted by China. Before financial support emerged from the private sector in China, biodiversity conservation had primarily been financed by the government. By the end of the 20th‐century international nongovernmental organizations and China's local philanthropists began to launch pilot programs in the country. In the past 5 years, biodiversity conservation across China has received CNY 1.757 billion (approximately $279 million) from the philanthropy sector. It represents the largest‐ and fastest‐growing share (69%) of environmental philanthropic funding; however, it accounted for <1% of all the philanthropic in all sectors nationwide. We suggested Foundations and NGOs review and adjust their strategies to align with the Kunming‐Montreal global biodiversity framework. Proactive connection and engagement with the philanthropies is required to expand its contributions while providing better pathways and support mechanisms for philanthropic funding for biodiversity conservation. Despite the philanthropic funding provided has been relatively modest over the past few decades, the philanthropic organizations have achieved significant positive results for biodiversity conservation in China. However, the funding for biodiversity conservation falls far short of what is needed to achieve the goals under the Kunming‐Montreal global biodiversity framework. This study provides a comprehensive overview of biodiversity philanthropic funding in China. Based on the collection of data related to environmentally relevant grants provided by companies, foundations, and individuals, we conducted a visualization analysis to reveal China's philanthropic funding flows between 2016 and 2020 in China. This article presents an introduction to the 8th European Conference on the History of Economics, held in March 2002 , at Montreal, Quebec. By visual representation, was meant the use in the field of various kinds of images, be they graphs, diagrams, maps or even paintings. Papers presented at the conference were varied. Physiocracy was the subject of two of them. Another dealt with the use of imagery in the literature critical of 19th-century English political economy. The role of visual representation in science has, in recent years, become an issue of interest for historians, sociologists and philosophers.

This article introduces a section of abstracts from the XVII World Congress of Sexology in Montreal, Canada in July 2005 presented by a collaboration between the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality and the World Association for Sexual Health. The 113 abstracts represent the range of research presentations made during the four days of the Congress. The abstracts are grouped into three sections by topic: psychology, sociology and cultural aspects of sexuality, clinical sexology, and HIV and STI prevention and care. The abstracts represent the state of empirical research in sexology on the international level.

The political consequences of climate change have been topics at numerous political science conferences. Contrary to the plurality of discussions at these meetings, it is striking that there is no systematic account of the carbon footprint of political science conferences themselves. Applying a GIS-based approach I estimate the travel induced greenhouse gas emissions of the last six ECPR General Conferences (2013–18). The results show that for the five conferences that took part in Europe the average emissions per attendee were between 0.5–1.3 tons CO2-equivalents. At the 2015 conference in Montreal it were even 1.9–3.4 tons. Compared to estimations based on the latest IPCC reports which call for a reduction of per capita emissions to 2.5 tons by 2030 and even 0.7 tons by 2050 in order to keep on track with the 1.5-degree goal, the travel induced GHG-emissions of ECPR conferences are very high. Yet, further estimations demonstrate that significant emission reductions are possible: by choosing more central conference venues, promoting low-emission landbound means of transportation and introducing online participation for researchers from far away, the carbon footprint could be reduced by 75–90 per cent. The article reports about the congress of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The one hundred and thirty first congress was convened in Montreal, Quebec, from December 26 to 31, 1964. Papers were given at the Queen Elizabeth, Sheraton-Mt. Royal, Windsor, Laurentien, and Ritz Carlton hotels. Convention headquarters were at the Queen Elizabeth, which also held the AAAS Annual Exposition, which boasted a fine array of instruments and books, and the AAAS Science Theatre, in which a selection of the latest foreign and domestic scientific films were shown. On December 26, section K of the AAAS presented a symposium. On December 29 and 30, the symposium "Arctic and Subarctic Archeological and Ethnological Problems," was held. A highly stimulating program was offered by the symposium "Problems of Interdisciplinary Methodology in the Behavioral Sciences." The "Symposium on Ethnobotany of Some New World Cultures," offered papers dealing with various crops cultivated in different areas of North and South America.
