This study aims to determine the influence of distance asynchronous teaching of Physics-I topics via intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs) on academic achievement and permanence. A Web-based learning environment was created by use of an ITS called "Turkish Intelligent Tutoring System" (TURKZOS) for such Physics-I units as work, energy, and conservation of energy. The experimental group of the study consisted of 26 students who had computer and Internet access and participated in the study voluntarily. The achievement test developed by the researchers was used for collecting data. This test was conducted as pre-test and post-test before and after the experimental procedure respectively. The same test was administered to measure permanence 45 days later following the performance of the post-test. The obtained data were analyzed via paired t-test. Mean pre-test score was found to be 23.88, and mean post-test score was found to be 73.80. Mean permanence test, on the other hand, was found to be 71.88. When mean pre-test and post-test scores were compared, a significant difference was identified in favor of the mean post-test score (p < 0.05). In addition, a significant difference was detected between mean permanence test and pre-test scores (p < 0.005). The mean permanence test score was higher than the mean pre-test score. It was concluded that intelligent learning environments created through Web-based tutoring systems have a positive influence on academic achievement and permanence in physics teaching. In this paper, a detailed dryer section audit was conducted on a paper machine to evaluate its energy performance. The methodology and instruments used for field measurements are introduced as an important part of dryer audit. The deficiency points which limit drying performance of the paper machine are identified based on the tested data, It was found that significant energy savings can be achieved in the studied paper machine. Metacognitive skills can have enormous benefits for students within engineering courses. Unfortunately, these metacognitive skills tend to fall outside the content area of most courses, and consequently, they can often be neglected in instruction. In this context, previous research on concept mapping as a teaching strategy points to meaningful learning. The purpose of this innovation paper is to report an application of concept mapping (1) to facilitate metacognition steps in students, and (2) to identify the muddiest points students struggle with, during both in-person and online instruction of a problem-solving-based biomedical engineering course. This innovation article also looks at the usefulness of concept mapping through instructor and student perceptions and students' class performance. The entire concept mapping intervention was conducted during weeks 8-10 of the Spring 2019 in-person quarter and during weeks 3-4 and 8-10 of the Spring 2021 online quarter. The exercise involved concept mapping, explanation and discussion with peers, and answering structured reflection prompts. Each concept map activity was contextualized to the metacognitive knowledge domain of the revised Bloom's taxonomy. The average class performance was compared between students who completed concept mapping vs. those who did not, using a t-test and one-way ANOVA at alpha = 0.05 significance level followed by a Tukey HSD test. Students' concept maps and reported answers were analyzed qualitatively following the concept mapping intervention. During the Spring 2019 in-person quarter, 59.30% of students completed concept mapping with reflection, whereas 47.67% completed it in spring 2021 online instruction. A two-tailed, unpaired t-test indicated that concept mapping did not significantly enhance students' class performance (p > 0.05) within each of the in-person and online instructions. Peers' suggestions to students to improve concept maps revealed themes related to course concepts, prerequisite concepts, and the act of concept mapping itself. Concept mapping was effective in revealing the muddiest points of the course. Concept mapping did not significantly enhance students' class performance either in-person or online instruction (effect sizes were 0.29 for the 2019 in-person quarter and 0.33 for the 2021 online quarter). However, instructors and students' perceptions reflected that concept mapping facilitated metacognition in a problem-solving-based biomedical engineering course both during in-person and online instruction. Most students (78%) were optimistic about the usefulness of concept mapping for this course, and 84% were inclined to apply it for a variety of other courses.

It is our pleasure to present this special issue ofHeat Transfer Engineeringwith a selection of papers presented at the 4th International Symposium on Heat Transfer and Energy Conservation, ISHTEC2012, held January 6–9, 2012, in Guangzhou, China. The conference was sponsored by the Key Laboratory of Enhanced Heat Transfer and Energy Conservation of Education of Ministry of China. More than 160 delegates including 42 foreign delegates from 16 countries came to the conference and there were more than 140 papers presented at the conference. The topics covered a wide variety of fields from new heat transfer theories, to micro heat transfer, to enhanced heat transfer technologies and the heat transfer problems in energy use systems. This special issue is a selection of the best 21 papers presented at the conference, including 2 review papers and 19 full-length research papers. The analysis of these papers showed that there are new trends in recent years in heat transfer and energy conservation: (1) New heat transfer theories are actively proposed to optimize heat transfer problems. (2) New alternative energy use technologies are being extensively investigated to meet the desire for a low carbon society. (3) Even for the seemingly traditional processes and equipment, new phenomena and findings are continuously disclosed, during which computational fluid dynamics has been more and more relied on. An in-depth investigation into the effect of embedment in global value chain (GVC) on energy conservation and emissions reduction is of great significance for scientifically assessing the environmental impact of GVC participation, and promoting high-quality development in China. This paper incorporates GVC embedment, energy consumption and carbon emissions into the same analysis framework for the first time. Based on the WIOD database, this paper theoretically and empirically examines the impact and mechanism of global value chain embeddedness on carbon emission reduction from two dimensions: energy consumption intensity and energy consumption structure. The study found that GVC embedment significantly reduced the industry's carbon emission intensity; developing economies' embedment in GVC helped reduce their carbon emission intensity, while the effect was not obvious in developed economies. GVC embedment had a significant inhibitory effect on the carbon emissions in both upstream and downstream industries, but not conducive to carbon reduction of low-tech manufacturing. The mechanism test shows that the GVC embedment not only exhibits the dual effects of energy conservation and emissions reduction, but also has a significant impact on carbon emissions by reducing the energy consumption intensity and improving the energy consumption structure. Knowledge associated with energy conservation is important but it may appear difficult and monotonous to students due to the presence of jargon and complex scientific concepts. This research created two digital question-and-answer games and compared them with a traditional paper-and-pencil learning method to explore how different learning approaches would affect college students' learning for knowledge of energy conservation. This research conducted a between-subject experiment with random assignment to examine short-term effects of the three different learning methods on motivation, attention, and learning outcomes. The results revealed that participants who played the digital game equipped with more cartoon-style, animated, and interactive features scored significantly higher than the lower-complexity digital game group as well as the traditional paper-and-pencil group on the learning outcome tests. Moreover, in contrast to many previous studies, use of these digital games was not found to affect learning motivation and attention.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to analyse recent actions of energy efficiency implemented by University of Passo Fundo, a higher education institution located in the south of Brazil, and their contributions to Goal 7. Design/methodology/approach: The analysis is based on collected energy data and information of energy efficiency actions applied at the university. Findings: The paper shows the progress related to the energy practices and discusses opportunities, threats, strengths and weaknesses of applying energy efficiency at universities and its contributions towards sustainable development goal (SDG) 7. Practical implications: The findings of this study can inform readers about University of Passo Fundo's initiatives towards energy efficiency focussed in lightening, photovoltaic solar power generation and free energy market. Readers are able to improve their knowledge with the discussion of internal and external factors related to the initiatives. Originality/value: The originality of this paper is connected to the idea of sharing the experiences from University of Passo Fundo, connecting energy efficiency practices at universities to SDG 7 and also exploring opportunities, threats, strengths and weaknesses of applying these practices in the context of a higher education institution.

This plant is suspended on water surface as the carbon to nitrogen ration of the plant is high it can be used for biogas production. Biogas mainly contains sixty per cent of methane. This present paper based on methane which is used as fuel for running IC engine and from that electricity can be generated. Biogas plant working model is studied and an evaluation of performance is done with respect to economy as an alternative fuel. Also the briquette making machine was developed from the waste which is obtained from biogas plant.

In the context of global climate change, energy conservation and greenhouse effect gases (GHG) reduction are major challenges to mankind. The forestry-pulp and paper industry is a typical high energy consumption and high emission industry. We conducted in-depth research on the energy flows and carbon footprint of the forestry-pulp paper industry. The results show that: (1) The main sources of energy supply include external fossil fuel coal and internal biomass fuel black liquor, which supply 30,057,300 GJ and 14,854,000 GJ respectively; in addition, the energy produced by diesel in material transportation reaches 11,624,256 GJ. (2) The main energy consumption processes include auxiliary engineering projects, material transportation, papermaking, alkali recovery, pulping and other production workshops. The percentages of energy consumption account for 26%, 18%, 15%, 10% and 6%, respectively. (3) The main sources of carbon include coal and forest biomass, reaching 770,000 tons and 1.39 million tons, respectively. (4) Carbon emissions mainly occur in fuel combustion in combined heating and power (CHP) and diesel combustion in material transportation, reaching 6.78 million tons and 790,000 tons of carbon, respectively. (5) Based on steam and electricity consumption, the indirect carbon emissions of various thermal and electric energy production units were calculated, and the key energy consumption process units and hotspot carbon flow paths were further found. Time-of-use pricing of electric energy, as an important part of the national policy of energy conservation and emission reduction, requires accurate electric energy data as support. However, due to various reasons, the electric energy data are often missing. To address this thorny problem, this paper constructs a CNN and GRU-based recovery model (RCNN-BiGRU) for electric energy data by taking the missing data as the output and the historical data of the neighboring moments as the input. Firstly, a convolutional network with a residual structure is used to capture the local dependence and periodic patterns of the input data, and then a bidirectional GRU network utilizes the extracted potential features to model the temporal relationships of the data. Aiming at the difficult selection of network structure parameters and training process parameters, an accelerated adaptive differential evolution (AADE) algorithm is proposed to optimize the electrical energy data recovery model. The algorithm designs an accelerated mutation operator and at the same time adopts an adaptive strategy to set the two key parameters. A large amount of real grid data are selected as samples to train the network, and the comparison results verify that the proposed combined model outperforms the related CNN and GRU networks. The comparison experimental results with other optimization algorithms also show that the AADE algorithm proposed in this paper has better data recovery performance on the training set and significantly better performance on the test set. An introduction is presented which discusses various articles published within the issue taken from the Third International Workshop on Heat Transfer Advances for Energy Conservation and Pollution Control held in Taipei, Taiwan, October 16-19, 2015 on topics such as clean energy.

The 1925 paper "On quantum mechanics" by M. Born and P. Jordan, and the sequel "On quantum mechanics II" by M. Born, W. Heisenberg, and P. Jordan, developed Heisenberg's pioneering theory into the first complete formulation of quantum mechanics. The Born and Jordan paper is the subject of the present article. This paper introduced matrices to physicists. We discuss the original postulates of quantum mechanics, present the two-part discovery of the law of commutation, and clarify the origin of Heisenberg's equation. We show how the 1925 proof of energy conservation and Bohr's frequency condition served as the gold standard with which to measure the validity of the new quantum mechanics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• The convergence analysis and the techniques used in Lemma 3.3 by X. Wang et al. in [1] are based essentially on Sobolev's inequality in one dimension and they cannot be extended to two dimensions. • All results based on Lemma 3.3 are false, in particular Theorem 3.3, Theorem 4.1, Theorem 5.1 and Theorem 5.2. • Regarding the conservation of mass and energy, the initial terms Q 0 and E 0 depends on U 0 and on U 1 and the authors consider only Eq. (4) without taking into account Eq. (7). Therfore, there is an error in Theorem 3.1 and Theorem 3.2. • In Theorem 4.1, the authors did not show that u1 is uniquely determined by Eq. (7). In the above article, a second-order convergence in the maximum norm of the two-dimensional regularized long-wave equation is proved. However, due to a wrong inequality in Lemma 3.3 used in X. Wang et al.[1], there are some fundamental errors in this paper, in particular the proof of Theorem 3.3 and the convergence Theorem are no longer correct. The Youth Strike for Climate raised important global attention to interconnected climate, energy and environmental issues -- it also compelled us to consider what we will do to address these pressing challenges. Developed through consideration of such dynamics, we propose critical energy literacy as an emerging theory that denotes understanding of the social, environmental, political and economic challenges, benefits and impacts of various energy sources, developments and technologies. Critical energy literacy is grounded in critical and decolonising approaches to STEM education; considerations for collaborative multi-, inter- and Trans disciplinary pedagogy; critical place-based inquiry and pedagogy; critical gender perspectives and critical media literacy and engagement. Enhancing societal critical energy literacy will assist with more equitable energy, transit, construction and environmental planning by and for communities, businesses and governments. In this theory-building commentary, we share insights related to and principles for our emerging theory of critical energy literacy which coalesced through personal experience with and previous studies into related initiatives and areas of inquiry, and recent reviews of literature as well as K-12, post-secondary and not-for-profit curricula in Canada with consideration for international contexts. A discussion of renewable energy development and education focused on the Canadian province of Alberta is presented as an illuminating exemplar.

Smart meters for measuring electricity consumption are fast becoming prevalent in households. The meters measure consumption on a very fine scale, usually on a 15 min basis, and the data give unprecedented granularity of consumption patterns at household level. A multitude of papers have emerged utilizing smart meter data for deepening our knowledge of consumption patterns. This paper applies a modification of Okoli’s method for conducting structured literature reviews to generate an overview of research in electricity customer classification using smart meter data. The process assessed 2099 papers before identifying 34 significant papers, and highlights three key points: prominent methods, datasets and application. Three important findings are outlined. First, only a few papers contemplate future applications of the classification, rendering papers relevant only in a classification setting. Second; the encountered classification methods do not consider correlation or time series analysis when classifying. The identified papers fail to thoroughly analyze the statistical properties of the data, investigations that could potentially improve classification performance. Third, the description of the data utilized is of varying quality, with only 50% acknowledging missing values impact on the final sample size. This paper uses the exogenous shock of China's formal implementation of the environmental information disclosure system in 2008 to construct a quasi-natural experiment. Based on the panel data of prefecture-level cities from 2003 to 2019, the propensity score matching and difference in difference (PSM-DID) approach was used to systematically evaluate the impact of environmental information disclosure on energy efficiency. Overcoming the difficulties in measuring environmental information disclosure and the endogenous problem, this paper investigates the energy-saving effect of environmental information disclosure and illustrates its mechanism for the first time. The results show that environmental information disclosure significantly improved energy efficiency, and public participation played an important role in energy conservation, a conclusion that remained true after a series of robustness tests. The test of the impact mechanism shows that environmental information disclosure can achieve the goal of improving energy efficiency by promoting industrial structure upgrading and technological innovation. This paper enriches the discussion on the relationship between environmental information disclosure and energy efficiency, and provides useful policy inspiration for improving the level of energy efficiency and achieving sustainable economic development. Depletion of resources and climate change are important factors impacting sustainable development. Energy education, as part of education for sustainable development, is considered an efficient way to raise students' awareness of environmental protection and energy saving. This study aimed at understanding the energy literacy of high school students in Vietnam, and explored the factors that influence students' energy-saving behavior as a basis for considering the effectiveness of the energy education program. An online and paper version energy-literacy survey was conducted. Participants were 600 12th-graders from high schools in Northern, Central and Southern Vietnam. Structural equation modeling was used to test the hypotheses of the relationships between energy knowledge, energy-related values, attitude toward energy saving, energy saving intention and behavior. Welch's ANOVA was conducted to examine whether energy-saving behavior differed by group. The results showed that 12th-graders' energy knowledge tended to be low, while their perceived values, attitude, intention and behavior related to saving energy were relatively high. There was no direct effect of energy knowledge on their energy-saving intention or behavior, while an indirect effect was observed if value and attitude toward energy saving were taken as mediators. Based on the participants' self-reported data, public-school students performed more behaviors to reduce energy consumption than those from private schools. In addition, the major source from which students gained energy knowledge was the mass media. According to the results, implications related to energy policy and instruction were generated.

Society is in strong need to change the way in which energy is produced and consumed. To cope with this complex challenge, integration of knowledge from different disciplines is needed. This paper shows how an interdisciplinary educational approach called networked learning combined with sustainability transition theories can help groups of engineering students to address pressing societal challenges such as the energy transition. A series of 8 workshops was held with an interdisciplinary engineering student team of a University of Technology. Networked learning within the student team showed an ad-hoc character, mainly caused by shifting student constellations during workshops. Workshops focusing on short-term goals resulted in more concrete output. The team showed a high level of equality amongst members and actively reflected on organisational aspects of their learning process. Sustainability transitions concepts and theories that integrate multiple disciplinary perspectives further supported the learning process and helped to guide strategic decision making.

Purpose: Changing the present behavior of individuals toward a more sustainable lifestyle is a complex task requiring a well-established strategy and institutional commitment. The purpose of this paper is to understand the strategic steps, as proposed by Steg and Vlek (2009), that has been mostly focused on by higher education institutions (HEIs) in the past decade (2010-2020) to foster pro-environmental behavior (PEB) of students. Design/methodology/approach: A literature review was conducted following the approach given by Denyer and Tranfield (2009). Subsequently, the results of 147 articles from 22 journals were discussed using the seven-element system proposed by Lozano et al. (2013). Findings: In the past decade, HEIs have increased their efforts to improve their understanding of the determinants of PEB of students and methods to foster PEB. However, the results indicated that the classification was similar to previous studies, with HEIs focused mainly on assessing students in terms of personal factors (assessment and reporting category), understanding the relationships among psychological determinants and their influence on student behavior (research category) and planning educational interventions (education category). Originality/value: This is the first study that reviewed the role of HEIs in fostering PEBs of students using the approach proposed by Lozano et al. (2013) as a theoretical framework and the strategy proposed by Steg and Vlek (2009) as a guideline.

Purpose: This paper aims to investigate potential impact of internal carbon pricing in emission reduction in Higher education institutions (HEIs). Over the past century, human activities have increased greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the atmosphere. If GHG emissions continue their upward trend, this will disturb the natural balance and trigger abrupt changes in all components of the climate system. Limiting climate change would require a substantial and sustained reduction in GHG emissions from all sectors. HEIs, as major emitters, indeed need to respond to the demand to become more sustainable by making practical changes to the way their institution is run. Design/methodology/approach: Using emission data associated with campus waste, this study describes how HEIs can take the lead on emission reduction through the implementation of carbon pricing. Findings: Specifically, this study estimates the cost of emissions from campus waste to illustrate the primary benefits of internal carbon pricing for scaling up campus carbon neutrality initiatives and describes practical implications for enhancing sustainable waste management in a university setting. This study will contribute to identifying the potential for emissions reduction through waste management using a carbon pricing mechanism in university settings. Originality/value: While carbon pricing has long been regarded as an alternative approach to tackling carbon pollution, it has not been thoroughly explored with regard to waste management.

The pervasive uncertainties in multiple port equipment scheduling frequently result in container handling delays or ineffective plans. To address the complexities and uncertainties of port multiple equipment integrated scheduling problem, this paper introduces a Digital Twin-driven (DT-driven) proactive-reactive scheduling framework for the first time. This framework is designed to promptly respond to uncertainties in the scheduling process and provide a transparent visualization of operational information. It specifically tackles the integrated scheduling problem of port quay cranes, Intelligent Guided Vehicles (IGVs), and yard cranes, considering uncertainties such as fluctuations in operating time, equipment failures, and IGV route conflicts. By developing a virtual container port simulation, which features a U-shaped port layout and double-cycling mode drawn from real-world scenarios, the paper evaluates the proposed framework's effectiveness. The experimental results demonstrate that the digital twin framework method significantly improves efficiency and conserves energy. Additionally, in large-scale conditions, the makespan difference between the DT-driven approach and the non-DT-driven approach is as much as 19.56 %. In terms of energy consumption savings, the DT-driven approach's scheduling plan can save 3.67 % of energy consumption under large-scale conditions. Moreover, as the fluctuation index increases, the energy consumption savings become even more significant. This paper also discusses the potential implications of adopting this framework for port companies, highlighting its benefits in enhancing operational and energy efficiency and its incorporation into port management systems. This paper purposed to validate Malaysian primary school students' energy saving practices via confirmatory factor analysis. The sample of the study was a total of 401 primary school students, who were selected with randomly cluster sampling method. To collect data, a five-point Likert scale was used. Data were exposed to descriptive analysis (Cronbach's alpha values for reliability) and a confirmatory factor analysis for testing measurement models for each of the constructs through AMOS software. The results showed that Cronbach's alpha coefficient was higher than 0.70. The results of the first and second order confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) ensured that the collected data fit with the model. It was also found that the measurement model satisfied specified measurement criteria. Overall, it can be deduced that the extracted components are useful guidelines to increase Malaysian primary school students' understanding of energy saving practices. Further, this research recommends some implications for future research and practitioners.

Efficient strategies to embedding sustainability in an organization are frequently linked to effective leadership. By design, changes in direction within an organization may lead to alterations in commitment or perceived significance of sustainability in organizations. While some organizational leaders are interested in embedding sustainability within a structure, other leaders believe in leaving the legacy behind and permanently influencing sustainability efforts. To confirm or dispel the underscored notion of the importance of leadership in embedding sustainability in organizations, a qualitative methodology approach to interviews, document analyses, and literature review is utilized. The research inquiry includes in-person interviews with top city staff and elected officials in a large Midwestern city and a review of the internal documents and reports. The end goal of the research is an examination of the role both elected and appointed officials have in embedding sustainability within cities, and whether a change in leadership may have an impact on continuity of sustainability implementation and long-term viability of such policies. The paper focuses on the application of sustainable energy policies within a local government organizational structure as a mean of constructing a better understanding of leadership on sustainability implementation and embedment. While the further inquiry is needed, the research points out that an active partnership between city managers, administrators, and elected officials must be in place to support integrating sustainability from within and that sustainability thrives where exhaustive leadership support such initiatives and efforts.

• Three types of deformation modes are observed in the process of in-plane compression. • Considering the interaction between face paper and honeycomb core. • Corresponding plateau stress model is derived in three deformation modes. • The suggested three models may help to reveal the deformation of paper honeycomb structures. The in-plane uniaxial crushing behavior of honeycomb paperboard is studied, and three types of deformation modes, namely no debonding mode, partial debonding mode, complete debonding mode, are identified under uniaxial loading along the y-axis direction. The interaction between face paper and honeycomb core is modeled, and the mutual induce effect between the deformation mode of the core configuration and the face paper was combined with the theory of energy conservation to derive the corresponding plateau stress of the honeycomb paperboard structure. A good consistency is obtained through the comparison of the experimental results and theoretical values. Exciting examples of physics principles illuminate the power and scope of our discipline. In this paper, we discuss a conservation of energy example for an introductory course. Energy conservation is applied to bird and dinosaur eggs to derive a method to predict the incubation period and the embryonic metabolism solely from the egg geometry. The power of this fundamental principle to yield insights into a biological example helps to demonstrate the utility of conservation of energy.

The IPT system has been studied for underwater applications such as autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and subsea sensors. However, it rarely comparatively shows the performance of the IPT system in air, freshwater, and seawater. Based on the fore‐mentioned research background, this paper presents a survey of the properties of the IPT system in different mediums. Here, a 100 W power‐level experimental IPT prototype is built and tested. The resonant frequency is set at 300 kHz with a gap range from 10 to 190 mm. The comparison is focused on the efficiency, mutual inductance, coupling coefficient, coil resistance, and quality factor of the IPT system. The IPT system is placed in air, freshwater, and seawater with the same settings. What's more, the magnetic fields of coupling coils in air, freshwater, and seawater are presented in this paper. Under the goal of "achieving carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060", how to select the type of fresh air system has become a key area of energy conservation. The method of outdoor design PM2.5 concentration is one of the important factors affecting the selection of fresh air filtration system. This paper first analyzed the PM2.5 concentration values of 31 cities in China from 2017 to 2020 based on mathematical induction, and next gave the recommended coefficient K under six urban economic regions methods in combination with the actual situation. Finally, the selection of air filters in five typical cities was taken as an example, the differences in recommended coefficient K and selection of outdoor design PM2.5 concentration under different recommended methods were compared and analyzed. The results showed that the recommended coefficient K under the six economic regions could meet the required K value needs of the region. The recommended coefficient K by the six economic regions methods based on per capita GDP is the best. Under that conditions, the recommended coefficient K of the five typical cities under strict and normal conditions differs from the average K values of the six methods by 0.06 and 0.04. This paper will provide a new method for the correct selection of outdoor design PM2.5 concentration in fresh air systems to achieve the dual carbon energy-saving goal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Sustainable manufacturing may be defined as the creation of manufactured products that use processes that are non-polluting, conserve energy and natural resources, and are economically sound and safe for employees, communities and consumers. Recently, there have been several industrial and governmental endeavors to launch sustainable manufacturing initiatives. To support such initiatives and to prepare the next generation of scientists and engineers, academic institutions have a responsibility to introduce educational programs and tools in the area of sustainable manufacturing. The purpose of this paper is to report on the approach, progress and contributions of a US National Science Foundation-sponsored project titled: "The Sustainable Manufacturing Advances in Research and Technology Coordination Network (SMART CN)". Design/methodology/approach: The project aims to bridge the gap between the academic knowledge discovery and industrial technology innovation for sustainable manufacturing. Toward this goal, various research and educational activities have been undertaken to introduce Sustainable Manufacturing Case Studies for use by academic instructors to a diverse group of undergraduate, graduate and industry professionals. Findings: In this paper, the need for education on sustainable manufacturing has been focused upon, followed by approaches toward addressing these needs, concluding with examples of case studies developed through the SMART-CN project framework. Originality/value: This work provides the engineering community with structured modules for introducing the topic of sustainable manufacturing in the curriculum.

Purpose: This paper aims to explore the concept of sustainability imaginaries--unifying core assumptions on what sustainability entails held by stakeholders--set within a large suburban Canadian university. The study aims to expand the field of research into imaginaries by focusing on imaginaries within an institution as opposed to a societal or national level. Design/methodology/approach: The paper is conceptual in nature and draws upon empirical tools, such as collaborative thematic coding of interviews of university community members, to illustrate emergent imaginaries around sustainability at the institution. Findings: This paper identifies four core sustainability imaginaries in an analysis of the interview data: sustainability as performance, sustainability as governance, sustainability as techno-efficiency and sustainability as community organizing. The paper then uses these imaginaries to analyse two recent university-wide events: the establishment of a high-level sustainability council and an energy management program. Research limitations/implications: Because of the institutional focus of this study, the research may lack generalizability to other institutions. Thus, researchers are encouraged to explore what other imaginaries may exist at other institutions. Practical implications: This paper includes implications for how universities can manage conflicting expectations and definitions in relation to new sustainability initiatives on campus. Originality/value: This paper offers reflections on the concept of sustainability imaginaries and what they might offer the field of sustainability in higher education.

Purpose: The explosion of social media use such as Facebook among higher education students is deemed to have great potential in widely disseminating environmental sustainability awareness. The paper aims to capture, summarise, synthesise and comment on the role of social media to garner interest of students and staff on environmental sustainability issues. Design/methodology/approach: Systematic literature review technique is adopted, and three selected online databases were searched for relevant papers for review. Specific data were extracted from each paper, and the discussion section was based on the developed research questions. Findings: Higher education needs to fully leverage the ubiquity of social media to extend how environmental sustainability is viewed by the students and staff. Sustainability practices conducted at the university level such as recycling, reduction of electricity and water consumption and paper reduction in classroom and used to engage students on environmental matters. For staff, social media can be leveraged as to convey the university policy and assist in their quest to become full-fledged green universities. Research limitations/implications: Some of the limitations of this research include the lack of keyword search using synonyms or related terms equivalent to the term "awareness", lack of forward and backward searches, and the papers were searched until end of 2013 only. Future research needs to take advantage of the current limitations to investigate this topic and be empirically supported by theories using quantitative, qualitative or mixed-method-based research. Future studies could also develop relevant frameworks to propose an effective use of social media for creating environmental sustainability awareness in higher education. Practical implications: Propagations of environmental sustainability awareness in higher education would be more effective with the use of social media. Social implications: In principle, the increase of environmental awareness level would increase the students' good behavioural conduct on environmental sustainability. Originality/value: While the broad topic of environmental sustainability in higher education is widely discussed, the role of social media in shaping environmental sustainability awareness is still under researched. This situation provides a significant potential for exploration by sustainability researchers to craft their investigation on the effective role of social media in creating environmental awareness in higher education.

This paper responds to the need for a greater integration of energy and environment themes in the higher education curriculum. We explore the practical implications of empowering students towards the implementation of individual action research projects focused on investigating and addressing insufficient or wasteful energy consumption among households and businesses. The paper scrutinizes a series of teaching and assessment activities within this domain, undertaken during 6 consecutive academic years--between 2008 and 2013--within a third-level undergraduate course unit at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom. Using questionnaire surveys, assessed projects and interviews with the students, we have found evidence to suggest that the action research projects contributed to the emergence of constructive alignment in the entire teaching process, while opening the space for informal action learning "sets" leading to the generation of new problem-solving skills useful in the job market.

In this article, we review definition, origin, terminology, fundamental properties, design concepts and procedures, basic applications, modeling, and numerical simulation of metamaterials. It is shown that metamaterial origin can be easily understood by placing metamaterials in the more general context of artificial electromagnetic materials and of the efforts performed by the scientific community working in complex materials to mimic and overcome the properties of natural materials. The basic properties of some classes of metamaterials as well as the related limitations are reviewed and discussed. A new application-oriented definition of metamaterials is given in terms of a functionalizing layer placed in between the traditional concepts of materials and devices. Metamaterial applications and the design steps of metamaterial-based and metamaterial-inspired components are also discussed, with particular emphasis on the numerical simulation of ideal metamaterials through available solvers. In this frame, finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling and simulation of the electromagnetic properties of metamaterials are deeply discussed. The recently introduced virtual MTM-FDTD tool is used to simulate the interaction between the electromagnetic field and metamaterials and show some metamaterial effects, such as beam focusing, existence of negative refractive angle, and so forth, through various examples in different scenarios. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Renewable energy is a trending topic due to its importance in today's society especially because of global warming. Because of its importance, this topic should be discussed at schools in an inclusive education environment. Experimental work is a very good activity to provide students effective conceptual discussions, but it is necessary to improve the teaching--learning process for an inclusive education paradigm. In this paper we propose a low-cost experimental activity using Arduino that allows regular students and blind students to explore together and understand features and properties about solar energy and a photovoltaic panel, such as how the electric power generated by the photocell depends on the angle of incidence of solar light and the load resistance of the circuit.

The main purpose of this study is to describe engineering students' perceptions about renewable energy. The paper focuses what the engineering students' know about renewable energy and developing their understanding on it. To determine students' pre- and post-perceptions about renewable energy, firstly, the questionnaire was developed by the researcher. After conducting the questionnaire, the courses and seminar were prepared. Then, the differences of percentages between pre- and post perceptions were identified. This study found that although the students were in Energy System Engineering Department, they still had many misconceptions about renewable energy. After the course prepared by researcher many students handled their misconceptions and developed their knowledge about renewable energy. This study has demonstrated that as the course took place, the perceptions, and misconceptions of students about renewable energy changed. It also recommended that if the single course can achieve the changes of perceptions and misconceptions of students, consistent changes might be succeeded by curriculum. The learning outcomes of the students showed that the course fits exactly for fulfilling future necessities for the education of students in sustainable topics.

Thispaper addresses a multistage batch plant scheduling problemunder energy constraints. These reflect the limited availability ofa thermal heating utility that is shared among parallel digestersof different capacities for the production of pulp. Depending on theprocessing sequence, more or less steam will be available for a givendigester, which will affect the duration of its heating stage andthe overall cycle time. Such integrated heating tasks resemble directheat integration, which has been addressed through models based ongeneric frameworks for process representation (e.g., State-Task Network,Resource-Task Network, State-Sequence Network) and relying on a singletime grid, either discrete or continuous. A new multiple time gridcontinuous-time model is now proposed where the complex energy constraintsare derived from the higher level modeling framework that is GeneralizedDisjunctive Programming. The South African downstream petroleum industry was in the hands of Whites and Multinational Oil Companies during the apartheid era. Many Historically Disadvantaged South Africans (HDSA’s) were excluded from the mainstream industry through, among other instruments, laws passed by the government such as the Petroleum Products Act 120 of 1977. Against this background, the newly elected democratic government instituted a policy process aimed at restructuring and transforming the petroleum industry to allow HDSA’s to enter the industry, in order to achieve sustainable presence, ownership and control of approximately a quarter of the industry by previously disadvantaged individuals. Since the introduction of this process, which culminated in the release of the White Paper on the Energy Policy of the Republic of South Africa (1998), little progress has been made towards achieving this government’s key policy objective. Instead, there is still little entry into the industry by HDSA’s, and the Black Oil Companies (BOC’s) that are in the industry continue to struggle to increase their market share. This paper discusses the possible constraints on achieving the objective, by looking at barriers that impede HDSA’s from entering the industry and BOC’s from increasing their market share significantly. There are three possible categories of barriers in the downstream petroleum industry, namely, economic barriers to entry, noneconomic barriers, and cross-sectoral barriers to entry, which are discussed in this paper. These categories of barriers prevent entry by HDSA’s into the industry and hinder BOC’s from increasing their market share. To circumvent these barriers, and in order to make progress towards achieving the government’s key policy objective of control by approximately a quarter of the HDSA’s, a black economic empowerment model was developed. This model seeks to increase the market share of the BOC’s and the presence of the HDSA’s in the industry in a sustainable way without significantly harming the multinational oil companies. It foresees Government licensing BOC’s to purchase up to 5% of the existing South African fuel demand at an Import Parity Price (IPP) that is significantly less than the Basic Fuel Price (BFP). The reason for this difference is that the BFP is based upon the supply of the totality of South Africa’s needs from elsewhere, whereas the IPP merely supplies up to 5% of South Africa’s needs, and can therefore source the product from refineries that are closer, so reducing the transport component. The impact of the loss of 5% of the internal market for petrol and diesel on the revenues of the MOC’s is less than 0.5%, because the difference between the IPP and BFP is a small fraction of the BFP.

Purpose: This paper aims to provide an overview of a content analysis of sustainability policies from Canadian post-secondary education institutions. The paper reports findings on the orientations to sustainability evident in the policies; references to other policies within the documents; and other key themes on how sustainability is engaged in the policies in relation to overall governance, education, operations, research and community outreach. Design/methodology/approach: A sample of 50 Canadian colleges and universities was selected based on representativeness across a range of criteria. A qualitative thematic content analysis of these policies was conducted using a collaborative coding approach. Findings: Results suggest that most sustainability policies described a Brundtland (i.e. intergenerational) and/or three-pillar (e.g. economic, environmental and social) orientation to sustainability. Many sustainability policies also connected to other external municipal or provincial policies. In terms of various domains of sustainability, campus operations was discussed by all of the policies and in the most detail, while discussions of sustainability in education (i.e. the curriculum) and in research were vague, and discussions of sustainability in relation to community outreach were included less frequently. Originality/value: This comparative study provides a broad view of sustainability policies from post-secondary institutions across Canada. It deepens our understanding of the institutions' conceptualizations of, and priorities for, sustainability. This paper has practical implications for institutions seeking to create or further develop their own policies, and it contributes to the comparative scholarly literature on the institutionalization of sustainability in higher education.
