Cultural diversity poses a challenge to mental Health care systems in many settings. Specialized cultural consultation services have been developed in a number of countries as a way to supplement existing services. The objective of this paper is to compare and contrast cultural consultation services in Montreal, London, and Paris to determine how culture and society have shaped the evolution of these services to meet local sensitivities and imperatives. Historical contexts of the sites, their descriptions and origins, how they categorize cultural, ethnic, and linguistic diversity, and their intake procedures are compared and contrasted according to a standardized template of themes. Data came from site visits and participant observation at each site. For historical, political, and cultural reasons, categorization of diversity and intake procedures differ markedly by site: Montreal focuses on language categories and language proficiency; London enumerates ethnic diversity according to officially mandated categories; and Paris does not gather ethnic data on its patients in any form. The process of cultural consultation, specifically its triage and intake procedures, is profoundly influenced by local histories and social norms that are maintained by professional cultures of psychiatry in each setting. To properly place their patients in context, cultural psychiatrists must not only aim to understand the culture of the other, but also must consider the culture of the mainstream society and how it shapes the delivery of services. This paper focuses on CitéMémoire, a multi-year outdoor exhibit located throughout historic Old Montreal. Organized around the confluence of Montreal's 375th birthday, Canada's Sesquicentennial, as well as Expo 67's 50th anniversary, CitéMémoire uses large-scale interactive projections and augmented reality to tell the city's history from the time of European contact onward. The exhibit's technologies of immersion guide audiences through a spectacularized historical landscape, rendering notions of heritage and nation into palpable archives that audiences encounter directly through their bodies. This article demonstrates how archival and cultural technologies, which choreograph audiences' bodily, imaginational, and affective positionalities, prove central to the 'dreamwork' of settler coloniality. Many Italian North Americans have two kitchens in their homes: one on the first floor, and a second in the basement. While this set-up is pervasive in cities across North America, homes with two kitchens are uncommon in Italy. This article explores the significance of the basement kitchen in first-generation Italian homes in Canada and the United States. Examining homes of various typologies in and around Toronto, Montreal and New York, purchased by Italian immigrants between 1950 and 1980, this paper argues that for Italian women the basement kitchen is a liberating space, free from the constraints of formality and traditional room divisions. When Bishop Charbonneau arrived in Montréal, the situation of immigration was a unique occasion to express his social convictions and his open mind on matters of housing and catholic action network. His pragmatic attitude was different from the ideological attitude of traditional nationalists. This paper first reviews how perspectives adopted on immigration had changed since the economic crisis of 1929, leading Charbonneau and the catholic action movements to pay attention to the concrete and human aspects of housing. Meanwhile, a real fight of power took place between the network of specialised movements of catholic action, approved by the archbishop, and more nationalistic associations like Association catholique de la jeunesse canadienne (ACJC), under Jesuit leadership since the beginning of the 20th century. Karl Stern, MD (1906-1975) was the author of The Pillar of Fire (1951) and three nonfiction books on psychiatry, psychoanalysis, and religion. His novel, Through Dooms of Love (1960), written with the assistance of his friend and admirer Graham Greene, covers a number of topics that were to psychiatric theory, treatment, and research at mid-century, and reflects several features of his own personal and professional vicissitudes. While the film industry has standardized exhibition and consumption practices to some extent, as exemplified in the multiplex model, some diversity remains within this field of cultural production. Microcinema provides one such variation or, as many practitioners would assert, a reaction against mainstream exhibition, and to a lesser degree institutional practices. This article discusses the transient but persistent nature of microcinema. It also provides a much-needed historical analysis of the transition from previous alternative film exhibition venues, like the art house, to the contemporary practice of microcinema, given that film history has largely neglected and underdocumented this significant yet ephemeral phenomenon. The Second Battle of Ypres (22-25 April 1915) was the Canadian Army's first action in the Great War and, arguably, its greatest battle, setting the tenor, style and esprit de corps that would carry it through to 1918. Notorious for the first use of poison gas, the bloody defensive contest actually savaged the 1st Canadian Division via conventional weapons - in forty-eight hours, 6,035 soldiers - one in every three- became casualties. The wave of interest in the Great Famine generated by the 150th anniversary commemorations in Ireland and across the diaspora indicates that public memory of the catastrophe remains vital to the formulation of Irish identities. The sesquicentennial not only focused popular, official, and scholarly attention on narrating the Famine, it also initiated ongoing debate over whether public acts of Famine remembrance produced meaningful or contrived connections to this painful past. In much of the commentary produced in the two decades since the sesquicentennial, sceptics and supporters alike have described Famine commemoration as a new cultural phenomenon – one that broke public memorial silence on the subject. Yet, there were various memorial practices and commemorative narratives long before the mid-1990s, most notably the acts of remembrance of Irish diasporic communities around the time of the Famine's 50th anniversary. This article addresses this issue in relation to Liverpool and Montreal – the busiest British and Canadian urban ports of entry during the Famine migration. Both cities were flooded with destitute and often ailing Famine migrants in the summer of 1847 when officials and residents struggled to contain a typhus epidemic that killed thousands despite quarantine measures. Though many of the Irish newcomers to Montreal and Liverpool out-migrated subsequently, Irish Catholic groups in both cities kept its memory alive through political rhetoric, religious rituals, and historical commemoration, often recalling it as the traumatic genesis of Irish emigration, and periodically mobilizing its remembrance in support of various forms of Irish nationalism. This article considers how public memorial sites and commemorative narratives were constructed in Montreal and Liverpool at the turn of the twentieth century to entrench local ethnic solidarity in the context of sectarian strains and fraught socioeconomic circumstances, and to reinforce Irish national and diasporic connections amidst political contestations over Home Rule. The article discusses an 1857 lecture on Roman statuary delivered by writer Herman Melville to the Montreal Mercantile Library Association (MMLA) in Montreal, Quebec. Particular focus is given to archival records indicating that Melville had refused to change the subject of his lecture upon the MMLA's request. According to the author, the MMLA decided to change the title of his lecture but invited him back to speak the following year.

A personal narrative is presented which reflects on the author's career as a historian, commenting on his studies at the University of Montreal (l'Université de Montréal), the impact of the Annales school of history (l'École des Annales) on him, and his research interest in the history of Montréal, Quebec.

Montréal Jewry is unique in many respects, not only vis-à-vis the other major Jewish communities in Canada but even in the North American sphere. This is reflected in many ways. Montréal Jews are highly concentrated residentially, their community exhibits a high degree of institutional completeness and they themselves tend to cultivate a strongly defined Jewish identity both in the cultural and religious spheres. To a large extent these features can be attributed to the fact that the Montréal Jewish community is the oldest and most established in Canada, that it has received relatively little outside immigration in the last two or three decades and that it is somewhat sheltered from American social norms. Montréal Jews must also come to terms with a broader Francophone community that is itself at odds with the mainstream Anglo-Canadian components and forms a distinct society. In negotiating a balance between all these factors, including Québec nationalism and the rise of a new vibrant Francophone culture, the Montréal Jewish community has gained features which point to a separate destiny in the larger Canadian Jewish ensemble. In the early 1940s, Arab lobbying activities started to be noticeable in Canada. In 1944 the Canadian Arab Friendship League was founded in Montreal by Muhammad Said Massoud, a Druze emigrant from Lebanon. The League soon became the spearhead of Arab lobbying activity in Canada. Its declared goal was to improve Canada's relations with the Arab world, yet in the second half of the 1940s its main focus of interest was to struggle against the partitioning of Palestine and the establishment of a Jewish state there. An organised market for financial securities in Montreal prior to 1874 developed slowly because finance of major infrastructure projects was carried out in London, not Montreal. Growth was not driven by speculation or tempered by successive boom and bust; this makes the Montreal experience practically unique in the history of finance. The Montreal Board of Trade was the focus of commercial activities that eventually evolved through increased specialisation to a stock market. Some businessmen who called themselves brokers traded stocks and bonds for their own account but not on commission since trading volume was too low for any form of auction to take place. This article reports on the outcome of the workshop entitled Cataloging Unpublished History Interviews and Collections conducted by Marsha Maguire of the University of Washington and presented at the 2004 OnLine Audio-Visual Catalogers Conference, Expanding Access--Connecting the Global Community to a Multitude of Formats held in Montreal, Quebec in October 2004. The rules for cataloging oral histories are very similar to those for unpublished archival materials. Maguire provided a bibliography of useful sources, including Oral History Cataloging Manual by Marion Matters and published by the Society of American Archivists.
