We propose a multi-feed Huygens' metasurface (HMS) transmitarray designed for microwave power transmission applications. A near-field distributed optimization mechanism is employed to determine the optimal focal lengths of subarrays. We aim to balance between illumination efficiency and interference from incident waves, leveraging the conjugate field matching method for precise phase compensation. This approach ensures robust radiation performance, notably reducing the focus-to-diameter ratio for large-aperture antenna arrays. Consequently, it mitigates spatial dispersion effects and upholds the operational bandwidth of mega antennas. As a proof of concept, we have designed a single-layer HMS transmitarray measuring 1.14 × 1.14 m2 (22 λ at 5.8 GHz). Through simulation, we have attained a peak gain of 35.47 dB and an aperture efficiency of 57.73%. By employing a recently proposed Hubbard U density-corrected scheme within density functional theory, we provide design principles towards the design of materials exhibiting a spin crossover-assisted gas release. Small molecular fragments are used as case study to identify two main mechanisms behind the change in binding energy upon spin transitions. The feasibility of the proposed mechanism in porous crystals is assessed by correlating the change in binding energy of CO2, CO, N2, and H2, upon spin crossover, with the adiabatic energy difference associated with the spin state change of the square-planar metal in Hofmann-type clathrates (M = Fe, Mn, Ni). A few promising cases are identified for the adsorption of intermediate ligand field strength molecules such as N2 and H2. The latter stands out as the most original result as the strong interaction in low spin, as expected from a Kubas mechanism, results in a large change in binding energy. This work provides a general perspective towards the engineering of open-metal site frameworks exhibiting local environments designed to have a spin crossover upon adsorption of specific gas molecules. Recently, a series of reports showing ultrahigh electrostrains (>1%) have appeared in several Pb-free piezoceramics. The ultrahigh electrostrain has been attributed exclusively to the defect dipoles created in these systems. We examine these claims based on another report (G. D. Adhikary and R. Ranjan, "Ultrahigh measured unipolar strain >2% in polycrystalline bulk piezoceramics: Effects of disc dimension," arxiv.org/abs/2208.07134), which demonstrated that the measured electric field driven strain increased dramatically simply by reducing the thickness of the ceramic disks. We prepared some representative Pb-free compositions reported to exhibit ultrahigh strain and performed electrostrain measurements. We found that these compositions do not show ultrahigh electrostrain if the thickness of the disks is above 0.30 mm (the disk diameters were in the range of 10–12 mm diameter). The ultrahigh strain values were obtained when the thickness was below 0.30 mm. We compare the electrostrain obtained from specimens designed to exhibit defect dipoles with those obtained from stoichiometric compositions of Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 and K0.5Na0.5NbO3-based lead-free systems and could obtain much higher strain levels (4%–5%) in the later specimens in the small thickness regime. Our results do not favor the defect dipole theory as the exclusive factor for causing ultrahigh strain in piezoceramics. We present the development and validation of an impedance-based urine osmometer for accurate and portable measurement of urine osmolality. The urine osmolality of a urine sample can be estimated by determining the concentrations of the conductive solutes and urea, which make up approximately 94% of the urine composition. Our method utilizes impedance measurements to determine the conductive solutes and urea after hydrolysis with urease enzyme. We built an impedance model using sodium chloride (NaCl) and urea at various known concentrations. In this work, we validated the accuracy of the impedance-based urine osmometer by developing a proof-of-concept first prototype and an integrated urine dipstick second prototype, where both prototypes exhibit an average accuracy of 95.5 ± 2.4% and 89.9 ± 9.1%, respectively in comparison to a clinical freezing point osmometer in the hospital laboratory. While the integrated dipstick design exhibited a slightly lower accuracy than the first prototype, it eliminated the need for pre-mixing or manual pipetting. Impedance calibration curves for conductive and non-conductive solutes consistently yielded results for NaCl but underscored challenges in achieving uniform urease enzyme coating on the dipstick. We also investigated the impact of storing urine at room temperature for 24 hours, demonstrating negligible differences in osmolality values. Overall, our impedance-based urine osmometer presents a promising tool for point-of-care urine osmolality measurements, addressing the demand for a portable, accurate, and user-friendly device with potential applications in clinical and home settings. We present an experimental study of plasmonic slanted slit gratings (PSSGs) designed to achieve directional coupling between an incident light beam and surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) propagating along the surface of the structure. We also investigate mirrored PSSG pairs interconnected by a plasmonic slab waveguide. The structures are fabricated using direct milling by a gallium focused ion beam (FIB). In a mirrored pair arrangement, the first PSSG couples a perpendicularly-incident light beam to SPPs propagating in one direction along the waveguide, while the second PSSG decouples SPPs to perpendicularly-emerging light. This configuration shows promise for sensing applications due to the high sensitivity of the excited SPPs to changes in the refractive index of the bounding medium, and the separation of the optics from the fluidics by the substrate. The design also exhibits robustness to fabrication tolerances. A new coordination polymer (CP) with composition [Zn3(bpyp)2(TCB)2(H2O)2]n (1) has been engendered by performing reaction of Zn(II) with 1,3,5‐tris‐(4‐carboxyphenyl)benzene (H3TCB) and 2,5‐bis(pyrid‐4‐yl)pyridine (bpyp) under solvothermal condition. The single crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis for 1 suggests kgd topological behavior having resemblance with a tessellation composed of diamond shapes arranged in a star pattern and represented by the Schläfli symbol {41}2{42·62·81}. This newly designed CP exhibits optical band gap of 2.92 eV and employed as photocatalyst for photodegradation of antibiotics, namely, nitrofurazone (NFZ), chloramphenicol (CAP), sulfasalazine (SLA), oxytetracycline (OXY), and furazolidone (FZD). Among these antibiotics, 1 displays best photocatalytic activity against the photodegradation of NFZ and under optimized conditions viz. photocatalyst dosage of 15 mg, and initial NFZ concentration of 40 ppm, the CP 1 displays best catalytic performance and photo‐decomposed 93.04% NFZ with pseudo first order rate constant k of 0.04502 min−1 in 1 h. The escalating computational demands of deep learning and large-scale models have led to a significant increase in energy consumption, highlighting the urgent need for more energy-efficient hardware designs. This study presents a novel weight approximation strategy specifically designed for quantized neural networks (NNs), resulting in the development of an efficient approximate multiplier leveraging most significant one (MSO) shifting. Compared to both energy-efficient logarithmic approximate multipliers and accuracy-prioritized non-logarithmic approximate multipliers, our proposed logarithmic-like design achieves an unparalleled balance between accuracy and hardware costs. When compared with the baseline exact multiplier, our innovative design exhibits remarkable reductions, encompassing a decrease of up to 28.31% in area, a notable 57.84% reduction in power consumption, and a diminution of 11.86% in delay. Experimental outcomes reveal that the proposed multiplier, when applied in neural networks, can conserve approximately 60% of energy without compromising task accuracy. Concurrently, experiments focused on the transformer accelerator and image processing illustrate the substantial energy savings that can be obtained for Large Language Models (LLMs) and image processing tasks through the implementation of our proposed design, further validating its efficacy and practicality. This study explores the integration of computer vision with topology optimization for additive manufacturing, with a focus on maximizing eigenfrequency in a design domain. Utilizing custom-developed photogrammetry software, high-resolution images are processed to generate detailed 3D models, which are subsequently converted to STL files with precision. Adaptive meshing in COMSOL 5.3 Multiphysics, controlled through a MATLAB 2023 API, ensures optimal mesh resolution. Prioritizing resource conservation in extraterrestrial environments, the original volume is reduced by 50% while preserving structural integrity. The design domain undergoes rigorous topology optimization in MATLAB, supported by COMSOL's advanced FEM simulation. The optimized design exhibits a 57% performance improvement and a 50% weight reduction, maintaining the desired vibration characteristics, validating the efficacy of the modifications. Alkyl‐primary‐ammonium‐based room‐temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) designed to exhibit specific reactivities allowing functions that cannot be achieved by other RTILs have recently emerged. The archetype of the reactive RTILs is n‐octylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (OA‐TFSI), which has promising functions as an additive for hole transport materials (HTMs) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs); the high reactivity of the OA cations on the perovskite surface allows spontaneous perovskite passivation via HTM deposition, effectively improving the photovoltaic (PV) performance. However, although the reactivity manipulation of the reactive RTILs is instrumental for exploiting their potential functions and exploring their application scope, methods for reactivity control have not been developed. Herein, it is proposed that the coaddition of a pyridine derivative (4‐tert‐butylpridine: TBP) can effectively manipulate the reactivity of OA‐TFSI by controlling the protonation between OA and the 2,2′,7,7′‐tetrakis‐(N,N‐di‐4‐methoxyphenylamino)‐9,9′‐spirobifluorene (Spiro‐OMeTAD) HTM. The TBP prevents OA deprotonation presumably via stabilization of the OA cation, thus retaining its ammonium form, which allows efficient spontaneous perovskite passivation, effectively enhancing the PV performance. This reveals the protonation preference in the OA‐TFSI system, which is opposite to that in conventional RTILs. Data converters are necessary for the conversion process of analog and digital signals. Successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converters (ADC) can achieve high levels of accuracy while consuming relatively low amounts of power and operating at relatively high speeds. This paper describes a design of 8-bit 125 kS/s SAR ADC with a proposed high-speed comparator design based on dynamic latch architecture. The proposed design of the comparator enhances the performance compared to a conventional dynamic comparator by adding two parallel clocked input complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) transistors which reduce the parasitic resistance in the latch ground path and serve to minimize the latch delay time. The design of each sub-system for the ADC is explained thoroughly, which contains a sample and hold circuit, successive approximation register, charge redistribution types digital-to-analog converter, and the new proposed comparator. The proposed design is implemented using 180 nm CMOS technology with a power supply of 1.2 V. The average inaccuracy in differential non-linearity (DNL) is +0.6/-0.8 LSB (least significant bit), and integral non-linearity (INL) is +0.4/-0.7 LSB. This article presents reflections on our pre-Covid-19 exhibition Care and Control, and our interdisciplinary collaboration between artist Alice Tatton Brown and social scientists Maud Perrier and Junko Yamashita. The reflections expand current feminist debates about self-care and collective care by centring the importance of public space, refusals and contracts. Care and Control was designed as both an exhibition and a meeting place, created through our ongoing collaboration. It took place in a shopping centre in Bristol (UK) in June 2019. The exhibition was a collage of feminist archival objects and print, contemporary installation and community engagement. Care and Control began broadly as an experiment to seek out alternatives to an individualist approach to self-care, by researching how Women's Liberation Activists practised self-care and collective care beyond the household, and within protest, friendship and public space. In this article, we make a methodological contribution to feminist discussions of collective care by showing how our strategy of a) making a public exhibition and b) writing a Contract of Care is a significant technique for enacting some of the promise of Audre Lorde's 'self-care as warfare'. We show how Care and Control, drawing from the legacy of the Women's Liberation Movement, generated resources for countering definitions of self-care that predominate. Reflecting on how the Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated classed, racialised and gendered divisions in reproductive labour, our article suggests that self-care and collective care need to be conceptualised drawing on social reproduction. Children museums provide an engaging learning environment for families with exhibits designed to stimulate caregiver-child interactions. Specific types of questions have been shown to support child language learning by scaffolding more elaborative responses. This study analyzed the use of question form types during caregiver-child interactions in a children's museum, aiming to discern their correlation with child language proficiency. We examined and transcribed two exhibit explorations by 43 caregiver-child dyads (3- to 6-yearold children). Our analysis encompasses various syntactic question types (e.g., yes-no, wh-) and measures of child language proficiency, including lexical diversity, morphosyntactic complexity, and overall language ability. Findings reveal disparities in question form usage among caregivers and children, with caregivers predominantly employing closed questions and children balancing closed and open-ended types. Children of caregivers who predominantly posed closed questions exhibited shorter utterances and lower overall language scores. Details on other question forms are presented (sub-types of polar, wh-, alternative, and echo). A novel force sensor exploiting the interaction between plasmonic nanostructures and upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) is reported. The nanosensor is composed of a gold nanodisk and UCNPs separated by a flexible polymer layer. The gold nanodisk is designed to exhibit a plasmon resonance that selectively enhances one of the emission bands of the UCNPs while leaving the other ones largely unaffected. As the nanosensor is compressed or stretched by an external force, the polymer layer thickness changes, modulating the plasmon‐UCNP coupling. The resulting changes in the luminescence intensity provide the basis for sensing. Furthermore, the nanosensor employs ratiometric sensing, which makes it highly robust against any environmental variations. The nanosensors exhibit two orders of magnitude higher responsivity than previously reported UCNP‐based force sensors. In this paper, we try to design the joint waveform and passive beamforming within the context of dual-function radar–communication (DFRC) systems. Focusing on the intricate trade-off between stringent radar beampattern constraints and their desired performance, we introduce a novel manifold idea based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) framework. Specifically, our proposed method, named DFRC-MA, could address the challenge of constant modulus waveform design in a multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) DFRC system. Firstly, our methodology begins by formulating the reference waveform to achieve an optimal radar beamforming pattern. Subsequently, we define the DFRC optimization problem to mitigate the multi-user interference (MUI) under the constant modulus constraint. Through a series of simulations, we evaluate the efficacy of DFRC-MA, where the integrated waveform designed by DFRC-MA exhibits superior performance over some prevalent ones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new structure with negative stiffness and negative Poisson's ratio was designed to exhibit these characteristics during compression, energy absorption, and energy storage. The structure also shows improved impact resistance under extreme conditions due to transverse contraction during impact compression. These characteristics make the structure very suitable for use in spacecraft landing systems. A finite-element model using the improved Auricchio constitutive model was established, and compression tests were conducted on the new structure. The test results are in agreement with the simulation, validating the finite-element model. Comparing the new structure with traditional structures with negative Poisson's ratio, the new structure demonstrated significantly better energy absorption and experienced minimal deformation during the compression-pull process. In addition, the finite-element model was used to analyze the influence of cell structural parameters. Further analysis showed that cell width and wall thickness of a curved beam are critical parameters influencing the structure's overall energy-absorption performance, which should be emphasized in the design of landing energy-absorption devices with the new structure. Recently, great attention has been given to the idea of a smart environment. It often involves the use of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) for the management of electromagnetic wave reflections as the world awaits the emergence of 6G. Changeable intelligent surfaces may enhance the creation of wireless communication. The design and analysis of several unit cell reflections are presented in this work. The first design relies on the Switching Technique which involves switching on and off to acquire the phase as well as the coefficient of reflection to accommodate 6G standards. The unit cells design is configured to operate in the millimeter band and X band. In the second design, the radius of the circular patch was changed to adjustment of the phase and reflection coefficient. The use of Floquet technique is employed in investigating the scattering characteristics of a unit cell's constituent elements based on the assumption that every element consists of an extremely iterating periodic structure. To determine the optimal force reflection and the transformation phase, the return loss alongside reflection phase graphs of each resonant component were examined. The simulation results indicate that the first design exhibits a reflection phase shift range of -180 to 90 and a reflection magnitude over 0.93 at a frequency of 11GHz. In contrast, the second design demonstrates a reflection phase shift range of -135 to 135 and a reflection magnitude surpassing 0.9 at a frequency of 28GHz. Solid-state electromechanical smart material actuators are versatile as they permit diverse shapes and designs and can exhibit different actuation modes. An important advantage of these actuators compared to conventional ones is that they can be easily miniaturized to a sub-millimeter scale. In recent years, there has been a great surge in novel liquid pumps operated by these smart material actuators. These devices create opportunities for applications in fields ranging from aerospace and robotics to the biomedical and drug delivery industries. Although these have mainly been prototypes, a few products have already entered the market. To assist in the further development of this research track, we provide a taxonomy of the electromechanical smart material actuators available, and subsequently focus on the ones that have been utilized for operating pumps. The latter includes unidirectional shape memory alloy-, piezoelectric ceramic-, ferroelectric polymer-, dielectric elastomer-, ionic polymer metal composite- and conducting polymer-based actuators. Their properties are reviewed in the context of engineering pumps and summarized in comprehensive tables. Given the diverse requirements of pumps, these varied smart materials and their actuators offer exciting possibilities for designing and constructing devices for a wide array of applications. This study investigates the impact of temperature variations on the torque capacity of shrink-fit junctions in water-jacketed permanent magnet synchronous motors. Focusing on both baseline and improved designs; torque capacities were evaluated across a temperature range from −40 °C to 120 °C under different material conditions: Least material condition, nominal, and maximum material condition. The baseline design exhibited torque capacities from 7648 Nm to 9032 Nm at −40 °C, decreasing significantly to 549 Nm to 1533 Nm at 120 °C. The improved design showed enhanced performance, with torque capacities ranging from 8055 Nm to 9247 Nm at −40 °C and from 842 Nm to 1618 Nm at 120 °C. The maximum improvement was observed at 120 °C for least material conditions, with a 55.4% increase, and the minimum improvement at −40 °C for maximum material conditions, with a 2.4% increase. Our findings demonstrate a significant increase in torque capacity by up to 20% under varied thermal conditions. These results underscore the effectiveness of design modifications in enhancing thermal stability and torque capacity, making the improved design a more reliable choice for high-performance applications subject to significant thermal fluctuations. The airfoil is the foundation of an aircraft, and its characteristics have a significant impact on those of the aircraft. Conventional airfoil design mainly focuses on improving aerodynamic performance, while flying wing airfoil designs should also consider layout stability and stealth performance. The design requirements for an airfoil vary with its position on the flying wing layout aircraft based on corresponding spanwise flow field characteristics. By analyzing the spanwise flow characteristics of the flying wing, partition design models for flying wing airfoils were established in this study, and a series of flying wing airfoil designs that consider aerodynamics and aerodynamic/stealth were implemented. Then, the designed airfoils were configured on a three-dimensional X-47B layout for testing and verification. The results showed that the aerodynamic design and the aerodynamic/stealth design exhibited significant improvements in terms for aerodynamic and longitudinal trimming characteristics. However, the cruise drag performance of the aerodynamic/stealth design was slightly worse than that of the aerodynamic design, although the longitudinal moment trimming characteristics were basically the same. The stealth characteristics of the aerodynamic/stealth design had significant advantages, indicating that there were weak contradictions between the aerodynamic, stealth, and trimming requirements in the design of the flying wing. This study proposes a flexible MIMO antenna with improved isolation and connected ground designed on a flexible substrate that makes it compatible with various shapes and surfaces, including curved, irregular, or non-planar structures. The suggested single unit consists of a slotted rectangular radiator on the front layer with a partial ground connected to a circular stub on the other side. As well it is created on a flexible substrate (Rogers RO3003) that has a dielectric constant (εr) of 3 and a thickness of 1.52 mm. The Four copies of the single unit with orthogonal orientation are added to improve the system performance. The antenna units are connected through their ground to introduce the connected ground antenna. The size of the proposed design is compact (50 × 50 × 1.524 mm3). The simulating and testing results demonstrate that the antenna operates within a frequency range of 3–12 GHz and achieves a high isolation of ≥ 17 dB over most frequency range. The MIMO parameters and the radiation patterns are analyzed to evaluate the performance of the MIMO antenna. Finally, the four elements of the flexible antenna are fabricated and tested under flat and bending conditions. The simulation and testing results demonstrate that the suggested design exhibits excellent performance, such as broad bandwidth, high isolation, simple structure, and decreased correlation coefficient, which suggest it for the UWB applications and its flexibility allows it for integration into a wide range of devices, such as wearable technology, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and curved surfaces of vehicles or aircraft. The high voltage required to overcome the thermodynamic threshold and the complicated kinetics of the water splitting reaction limit the efficiency of single semiconductor‐based photoelectrochemistry. A semiconductor/solar cell tandem structure has been theoretically demonstrated as a viable path to achieve an efficient direct transformation of sunlight into chemical energy. However, compact designs exhibiting the indispensable optimally balanced light absorption have not been demonstrated. In the current work, we design and implement a compact tandem providing the complementary absorption of a highly transparent BiVO4 photoanode and a PM6:Y6 solar cell. Such bandgap combination approaches the optimal to reach the solar‐to‐hydrogen (STH) conversion upper limit for tandem photoelectrochemical cells (PECs). We demonstrate that, by using a photonic multilayer structure to adequately balance sunlight absorption among both tandem materials, a 25% increase in the bias‐free STH conversion can be achieved, setting a clear path to take compact tandem PECs to the theoretical limit performance. AbstractDrug combinations are increasingly utilized in cancer treatment to enhance drug effectiveness through synergistic therapeutic effects. However, determining the optimal biological dose combination (OBDC) in small-scale drug combination trials presents challenges due to the increased complexity of the dose space. To effectively optimize the dose combination of combined drugs, we propose a model-assisted design by extending the single-agent Bayesian optimal interval phase I/II (BOIN12) design. Our approach incorporates a utility function to balance the trade-off between risk and benefit and directly models the utility of each dose by constructing a quasi-beta-binomial model. A key advantage of our design is the simplification of decision-making during interim periods by considering all possible outcomes and pre-including the decision rule in the protocol. Additionally, we present a time-to-event (TITE) version of our design, employing an approximate likelihood approach to mitigate potential late-onset effects. The Stöber method is a widely-used sol-gel route for synthesizing amorphous SiO2 colloids and conformal coatings. However, the material systems compatible with this method are still limited. Herein, we have extended the approach to metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and coordination polymers (CPs) by mimicking the Stöber method. We introduce a general synthesis route to amorphous MOFs or CPs by making use of a base-vapor diffusion method, which allows to precisely control the growth kinetics. Twenty-four different amorphous CPs colloids were successfully synthesized by selecting 12 metal ions and 17 organic ligands. Moreover, by introducing functional nanoparticles (NPs), a conformal amorphous MOFs coating with controllable thickness can be grown on NPs to form core-shell colloids. The versatility of this amorphous coating technology was demonstrated by synthesizing over 100 core-shell composites from 20 amorphous CPs shells and over 30 different NPs. Besides, various multifunctional nanostructures, such as conformal yolk-amorphous MOF shell, core@metal oxides, and core@carbon, can be obtained through one-step transformation of the core@amorphous MOFs. This work significantly enriches the Stöber method and introduces a platform, enabling the systematic design of colloids exhibiting different level of functionality and complexity. Purpose: The decrease in specific thrust achieved by Ultra-High Bypass Ratio (UHBPR) aero-engines allows for a reduction in specific fuel consumption. However, the typical associated larger fan size might increase the nacelle drag, weight and the detrimental interference effects with the airframe. Consequently, the benefits from the new UHBPR aero-engine cycle may be eroded. This paper aims to evaluate the potential improvement in the aerodynamic performance of compact nacelles for installed aero-engine configuration. Design/methodology/approach: Drooped and scarfed non-axisymmetric compact and conventional nacelle designs were down selected from a multi-point CFD-based optimisation. These were computationally assessed at a set of installation positions on a contemporary wide-body, twin-engine transonic aircraft. Both cruise and off-design conditions were evaluated. A thrust and drag accounting method was applied to evaluate different aircraft, powerplant and nacelle performance metrics. Findings: The aircraft with the compact nacelle configuration installed at a typical installation position provided a reduction in aircraft cruise fuel consumption of 0.44% relative to the conventional architecture. However, at the same installation position, the compact design exhibits a large flow separation at windmilling conditions that is translated into an overall aircraft drag penalty of approximately 5.6% of the standard cruise net thrust. Additionally, the interference effects of a compact nacelle are more sensitive to deviations in mass flow capture ratio (MFCR) from the nominal windmilling diversion condition. Originality/value: This work provides a comprehensive analysis of not only the performance but also the aerodynamics at an aircraft level of compact nacelles compared to conventional configurations for a range of installations positions at cruise. This publication concerns the synthesis of a novel class of hybrid thermoset/thermoplastic elastomers, i.e., double cross‐linked polyisobutylene‐based polyurethanes (xPIB‐PUs), together with their processing and some key properties. These materials are designed to exhibit a combination of properties for indwelling medical applications, specifically for heart valve prostheses. The chemical cross‐links are introduced by well‐defined 3‐arm PIB stars fitted with HO‐end groups of molecular weights (MWs) of Mn = 3081 and 9000 g mole−1 and narrow MW dispersities (<1.3). Processibility of xPIB‐PU containing 70 wt% PIB (for biocompatibility and calcification resistance) is achieved by driving the syntheses to high conversions (>97%) close to but still below the gel point and completing the cross‐linking in heated molds. The processibility period (minutes) is controlled by controlling the MW of the cross‐linking agent in the 3081 to 9000 g mole−1 range. Blends of 3‐arm stars and linear bifunctional PIBs can also control the processibility period. The creep resistance of xPIB‐PU is significantly improved (from 13.2% to 5.5%) relative to physically cross‐linked PIB‐PU. xPIB‐PUs exhibit negligible permanent set (1–2%), and high Young's modulus (41 MPa). This paper presents a non-uniform curved grid-stiffened shell design method aiming to enhance structural performance using various stiffener patterns, allowing simultaneous optimization of stiffener thickness and stiffener layout. Firstly, the grid-stiffened cell description function is defined using quadratic polynomial functions, comprising the orthogrid, the triangle grid, the rotated triangle grid, and the Kagome grid. Then, the non-uniform stiffener layout description function is established using the sawtooth function, while a filter function is employed to ensure the smooth and continuous of the stiffeners. Moreover, the analytical sensitivity is thoroughly derived, and the optimization problem is formulated. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through three representative optimization examples: the cantilever beam, the special-shaped plate, and the S-shape shell. The study concludes that the proposed method can optimize arbitrary flat plates by embedding the design domain into the background domain. Additionally, the proposed method can be extended to perform stiffener design on complex surfaces by establishing projection relationship between the flat surface and the curved surface. Optimization results indicate that the non-uniform curved grid-stiffened shell design exhibits superior structural performance compared to the uniform grid-stiffened shell design. In this manuscript, we propose a circularly polarized (CP) antenna design that can achieve broadband axial ratio (AR) bandwidth in the X-band. A sequentially rotated serial feeding network is applied to achieve the broadband requirement. The proposed antenna consists of two substrates, one is for feeding elements and the other is for radiating elements. The 16 radiating elements located on an upper substrate are fed through cross-shaped slots located in a ground plane between two substrates. The feed network is based on a 1:4 power divider design and consists of a serial connection of the power dividers resulting in the proper power splitting to the 16 radiating elements. The proposed antenna is designed to exhibit an optimal radiation characteristic of around 8.2 GHz with a CP antenna gain greater than 16 dB and similarly wide impedance and AR bandwidths. Experiments with the fabricated CP antenna were performed to support the proposed CP antenna design theory and are in good agreement with the simulation results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, to improve the efficiency of the pipetting workstation and reduce the impact of the pipetting device on the stability performance of the workstation, a novel fully automatic pipetting method is proposed. Based on this method, a lightweight, multifunctional, and quantitative twelve-channel pipetting device was designed. This device can achieve simultaneous quantitative liquid absorption for twelve channels and sequential interval liquid discharge for each channel. Initially, the overall functional requirements were determined, and with the aim of a lightweight design, the total weight of the device was controlled to be within 580 g through a reasonable structural design, material selection, and choice of driving source. The device's overall dimensions are 170 mm × 70 mm × 180 mm (length × width × height), with a micropipetting volume ranging between 1.3 μ L and 1.4 μ L. Subsequently, factors affecting liquid suction stability were experimentally analyzed, and appropriate pipetting parameters were selected. The stability performance of this pipetting method during prolonged operation was investigated. Finally, the twelve-channel pipetting device was validated through experiments, demonstrating results that meet the national standards for the stability of a pipetting device. In summary, the device designed in this study exhibits novel design features, low cost, and modularity, thus demonstrating promising potential for applications in high-speed micro-volume pipetting. This work presents a novel design of a low-profile broadband circularly polarized (CP) metasurface (MS) antenna based on characteristic mode analysis (CMA) technique for potential use in C-band satellite communications. The proposed antenna is composed of a 4 × 4 array of truncated patch unit cells and incorporates an enhanced slot coupling feeding structure. CMA technique is employed to analyse and modify to improved CP performance. The proposed design exhibits good radiation characteristics including measured − 10 dB impedance bandwidth of 22.72% (4.8–6.05 GHz), a 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) of 16.3% (5.1–5.95 GHz), and a peak gain of 8 dBi within its operational frequency range. Furthermore, the antenna's metasurface design contributes to scattering suppression over a wide frequency span (4–18 GHz), with a notable peak reduction of 9.1 dB at 8 GHz. A probabilistic approach to the epidemic evolution on realistic social-contact networks allows for characteristic differences among subjects, including the individual number and structure of social contacts, and the heterogeneity of the infection and recovery rates according to age or medical preconditions. Within our probabilistic Susceptible-Infectious-Removed (SIR) model on social-contact networks, we evaluate the infection load or activation margin of various control scenarios; by confinement, by vaccination, and by their combination. We compare the epidemic burden for subpopulations that apply competing or cooperative control strategies. The simulation experiments are conducted on randomized social-contact graphs that are designed to exhibit realistic person–person contact characteristics and which follow near homogeneous or block-localized subpopulation spreading. The scalarization method is used for the multi-objective optimization problem in which both the infection load is minimized and the extent to which each subpopulation's control strategy preference ranking is adhered to is maximized. We obtain the compounded payoff matrices for two subpopulations that impose contrasting control strategies, each according to their proper ranked control strategy preferences. The Nash equilibria, according to each subpopulation's compounded objective, and according to their proper ranking intensity, are discussed. We consider the problem of evaluating designs for a small-sample two-arm randomized experiment using the power of the one-sided randomization test as a criterion. Our evaluation assumes a linear response in one observed covariate, an unobserved component and an additive treatment effect where the model's randomness is due to different treatment allocations. It is well-known that the power depends on the allocations' imbalance in the observed covariate. We show that power is additionally affected by two other design choices: the number of allocations and the degree of the allocations' dependence. We prove that the more allocations, the higher the power and the lower the variability in power. Our theoretical findings and simulation studies show that the designs with the highest power provide thousands of highly independent allocations each providing nominal imbalance in the observed covariates. These high-powered designs exhibit less randomness than complete randomization and more randomness than recently proposed designs that employ numerical optimization. This advantage of high power is easily accessible to practicing experimenters via the popular rerandomization design and a greedy pair switching design, where both outperform complete randomization and numerical optimization. In this paper, we propose a single photonic crystal structure to implement NOT/XOR/OR optical logic gates using interference phenomenon. The gates are designed as T-shaped waveguides. The filter rods used in the design enhance the contrast ratio by up to 82.25 dB compared with the existing designs reported in the literature so far, and provides a maximum bit rate of 1.567Tbps with a response time of 0.63 ps. The proposed design exhibits minimum power loss, and performance parameters are enhanced compared to existing reported works. Photonic logic gates emerged as a potential substitute for their traditional electronic counterparts due to quick speed, low power consumption, and compatibility with current optical communication networks. With the continuous development of rural revitalization and urbanization in China, the sustainable transformation of traditional rural architecture has become increasingly important. This study takes the Thangka exhibition hall in rural Malkang, Sichuan Province, as the research object and proposes a Thangka exhibition hall architectural design centered around solar heating and aiming for near-zero energy consumption. The research method involves establishing a solar energy system model on the roof of the exhibition hall and utilizing solar angle and area calculation formulas along with simulation software to calculate the optimal installation angle and area of solar panels, with the aim of achieving indoor temperatures that meet Thangka protection requirements while achieving zero-energy heating. Preliminary results indicate that this solar-centric near-zero energy architectural design can effectively promote the increase in indoor temperature through solar thermal conversion. Additionally, through calculation and simulation, the optimal installation angle for the solar panels achieving zero-energy heating is determined to be 24.25 with an azimuth angle of −1.2. The optimum installation area for solar panels is 8.2 square meters in the showroom and 2.7 square meters in the storeroom. Among these, the solar panel area for the Thangka exhibition hall constitutes 4.12% of the total area and is required for maintaining Thangka protection temperature requirements throughout the year, while the solar panel area for the storage room constitutes 1.88% and is also needed for the same purpose. Studying the optimal installation angle and area of solar panels can transform the exhibition hall into a near-zero-energy building, meeting the temperature requirements for Thangka preservation and human thermal comfort, while also achieving optimal economic benefits. Topology optimization is one of the most flexible structural optimization methodologies. However, in exchange for its high level of design freedom, typical topology optimization cannot avoid multimodality, where multiple local optima exist. This study focuses on developing a gradient-free topology optimization framework to avoid being trapped in undesirable local optima. Its core is a data-driven multifidelity topology design (MFTD) method, in which the design candidates generated by solving low-fidelity topology optimization problems are updated through a deep generative model and high-fidelity evaluation. As its key component, the deep generative model compresses the original data into a low-dimensional manifold, i.e., the latent space, and randomly arranges new design candidates over the space. Although the original framework is gradient free, its randomness may lead to convergence variability and premature convergence. Inspired by a popular crossover operation of evolutionary algorithms (EAs), this study merges the data-driven MFTD framework and proposes a new crossover operation called latent crossover. We apply the proposed method to a maximum stress minimization problem in 2D structural mechanics. The results demonstrate that the latent crossover improves convergence stability compared to the original data-driven MFTD method. A new tri-band rectangular DRA is simulated and tested for wireless communication applications like ISM, Wi-Max, and WLAN. The dielectric resonator antenna structure is excited by a 50Ω transmission line. The rectangular DRA with concentric square rings is designed to acquire the operation of triple-bands. The investigated antenna parametric study has been accomplished on HFSS tool. The implemented design exhibits triple-band characteristics at 2.16-2.57 GHz, 3.35-4.45 GHz, and 5.35-5.95 GHz, with a fractional bandwidth of 17.3%, 28.1%, and 10.6%, respectively. The implemented concentric square rings are imposed on FR4-substrate material to emphasize the antenna parameters and to minimize the size. The designed antenna has a compact size, good radiation properties, and optimal operational bandwidth. To validate the antenna, it is fabricated, and the results match well with the simulated ones. Additive manufacturing has proven to be a reliable and quick method for creating devices and tools. One example is 3D‐printed nasal swabs that require robust mechanical strength while maintaining adequate flexibility. However, there is a lack of detailed understanding on the mechanical response of tubular structures under torsion loading. The goal of this work is to understand the torsional behavior of a group of 3D‐printed tubular metamaterials. The idea of mechanical metamaterials is used and it is started with a rectangular lattice. Two main design methods are used: reinforced lattices and compliant lattices. First, diagonal reinforced beams are added to enhance the torsional rigidity. Furthermore, pre‐buckling is added to the straight beam, creating a flexible structure that increases the maximum torsional resistance. The experiments demonstrate that the sponge‐inspired design exhibits enhanced stiffness approximately 21 times that of baseline tubular designs. Moreover, the strength and toughness of the sponge‐inspired design are approximately 2.5 and 3 times higher. By curving the beam, compliant tubulars are created. The torsional angle is increased by at least 2.7 times, while the torsional toughness can reach up to 17 times. Diagonal flow fans offer substantial energy-saving potential and find broad application across various sectors. Their performance relies heavily on factors like outlet guide vanes and spacing relative to moving blades. However, research into enhancing fan performance through optimized guide vanes and spacing remains limited. In this study, we focus on improving the accuracy of predicting the internal flow field of diagonal flow fans. This paper incorporate rotation and curvature effects using the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model and introduce stress terms with helicity constraints to create a non-linear subgrid-scale model. This refined model enables more precise numerical simulations. By employing accurate simulations, we optimize the outlet guide vane configuration and conduct sensitivity analysis. We utilize a Radial Basis Function (RBF) model coupled with the Sobol method for this purpose. The optimized guide vane design exhibits enhanced resistance to airflow separation compared to the original, resulting in notable reductions in flow losses within the grille channel. Experimental tests are performed on the diagonal flow fan both before and after optimization. At the specified operating point, the second guide vane optimization leads to a 1.28 m3/min increase in fan flow, a 4.33% rise in total pressure efficiency, and a 2.2 dB noise reduction. These findings underscore the accuracy of the helicity correction model in predicting diagonal flow fan behavior. The multi-objective optimization approach, combining the RBF proxy model with the Sobol method, proves highly reliable. As an excellent single-stage object detector based on neural networks, YOLOv5 has found extensive applications in the industrial domain; however, it still exhibits certain design limitations. To address these issues, this paper proposes Efficient Scale Fusion YOLO (ESF-YOLO). Firstly, the Multi-Sampling Conv Module (MSCM) is designed, which enhances the backbone network's learning capability for low-level features through multi-scale receptive fields and crossscale feature fusion. Secondly, to tackle occlusion issues, a new Block-wise Channel Attention Module (BCAM) is designed, assigning greater weights to channels corresponding to critical information. Next, a lightweight Decoupled Head (LD-Head) is devised. Additionally, the loss function is redesigned to address asynchrony between labels and confidences, alleviating the imbalance between positive and negative samples during the neural network training. Finally, an adaptive scale factor for Intersection over Union (IoU) calculation is innovatively proposed, adjusting bounding box sizes adaptively to accommodate targets of different sizes in the dataset. Experimental results on the SODA10M and CBIA8K datasets demonstrate that ESF-YOLO increases Average Precision at 0.50 IoU (AP50) by 3.93 and 2.24%, Average Precision at 0.75 IoU (AP75) by 4.77 and 4.85%, and mean Average Precision (mAP) by 4 and 5.39%, respectively, validating the model's broad applicability. Extensive research is now being conducted on the design and construction of logic circuits utilizing quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA) technology. This area of study is of great interest due to the inherent advantages it offers, such as its compact size, high speed, low power dissipation, and enhanced switching frequency in the nanoscale domain. This work presents a design of a highly efficient RAM cell in QCA, utilizing a combination of a 3-input and 5-input Majority Voter (MV) gate, together with a 2 × 1 Multiplexer (MUX). The proposed design is also investigated for various faults such as single cell deletion, single cell addition and single cell displacement or misalignment defects. The circuit under consideration has a high degree of fault tolerance. The functionality of the suggested design is showcased and verified through the utilization of the QCADesigner tool. Based on the observed performance correlation, it is evident that the proposed design demonstrates effectiveness in terms of cell count, area, and latency. Furthermore, it achieves a notable improvement of up to 76.72% compared to the present configuration in terms of quantum cost. The analysis of energy dissipation, conducted using the QCAPro tool, is also shown for various scenarios. Deployable polyhedral grippers have attracted increasing attention for their priority in noncontact capturing missions. Enrichment of these grippers may benefit the conduction of various capturing tasks. In this paper, novel deployable polyhedral grippers are presented. A design flow is proposed for the structural designs of diverse grippers. The core problem during the construction is reducible to the structural designs and combination of multiple synchronously deployable modules. Each module, containing three faces connected by two revolute joints, can realize one-degree-of-freedom deployment. Type synthesis of synchronously deployable modules adopting different layouts of revolute joints is conducted. The mobility and kinematics of these modules are analyzed to verify the achieved motion. As examples, four deployable polyhedral grippers based on different polyhedrons and deployment diagrams are presented. The deployment performance of the prototype proves the validity of the proposed design method and exhibits the potential of these deployable polyhedral grippers for diverse capturing missions. InAs/AlSb quantum cascade detectors (QCDs) grown strain-balanced on GaSb substrates are presented. This material system offers intrinsic performance-improving properties, like a low effective electron mass of the well material of 0.026 m0, enhancing the optical transition strength, and a high conduction band offset of 2.28 eV, reducing the noise and allowing for high optical transition energies. InAs and AlSb strain balance each other on GaSb with an InAs:AlSb ratio of 0.96:1. To regain the freedom of a lattice-matched material system regarding the optimization of a QCD design, submonolayer InSb layers are introduced. With strain engineering, four different active regions between 3.65 and 5.5 µm were designed with InAs:AlSb thickness ratios of up to 2.8:1, and subsequently grown and characterized. This includes an optimized QCD design at 4.3 µm, with a room-temperature peak responsivity of 26.12 mA/W and a detectivity of 1.41 × 108 Jones. Additionally, all QCD designs exhibit higher-energy interband signals in the mid- to near-infrared, stemming from the InAs/AlSb type-II alignment and the narrow InAs band gap. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyses two furniture design exhibitions at the Belgian Saint Luke schools, organised in the 1980s within the programme of interior design. It demonstrates the pivotal role played by these exhibitions in the self-identification of interior design as a standalone discipline. Because of its relatively late emergence, the dialectic relationship with more established disciplines—most notably architecture—have heavily impacted interior design's claims to professionalism. The history of institutions with programmes in both fields offers clear insight into this phenomenon. The prominence attributed to furniture design in the 1980s student exhibits resulted from an epistemological rivalry with the architecture program. This article revisits the pedagogical practices at the heart of both exhibits, and considers them as a continuation of the teaching methods that had constituted the institutional foundations of the Saint Luke school network. As the drawing and designing of furniture served to codify specific design knowledge inherent to the discipline of interior design, the untimely recovery of this pedagogy aimed to legitimise the professional knowledge held by interior design graduates. This research paper introduces a family of one-dimensional S-unimodal maps based on the Gaussian function, designed to exhibit robust chaos across a wide range of parameters. These maps are developed to display robust chaos by avoiding multiple fixed points that are primarily responsible for the coexisting attractors in 1D maps. The parameter space analysis reveals that chaotic behaviour is sustained across the entire parameter space, except for a very narrow region. The study employs a comprehensive computational approach, including quantitative measures such as sample entropy, Lyapunov exponent, and invariant measures. The uniformly higher values of sample entropy, uniform positive values of the Lyapunov exponent, and the existence of invariant measures in a region of parameter space confirm the presence of robust chaos in these maps. Such a promising class of robust chaotic maps may be potentially used in diverse fields such as chaos-based cryptography, pseudorandom number generation, communication systems, and more. We numerically demonstrate three-octave supercontinuum generation using the z-cut lithium niobate waveguide by dispersion engineering. The photonic waveguide structure is designed to exhibit anomalous dispersion when pumped at 1.55 $ \rmu {\rm m} $ μ m wavelength. By altering the waveguide width, tunable zero-dispersion wave generation has been achieved up to 6 $ \rmu {\rm m} $ μ m wavelength. Our findings show the broadest supercontinuum spanning in the mid-IR region using a lithium niobate platform, making it a promising candidate for various applications in optical communication, sensing, and imaging. Traditional methods of shielding fragile goods and human tissues from impact energy rely on isotropic foam materials. The mechanical properties of these foams are inferior to an emerging class of metamaterials called plate lattices, which have predominantly been fabricated in simple 2.5‐dimensional geometries using conventional methods that constrain the feasible design space. In this work, additive manufacturing is used to relax these constraints and realize plate lattice metamaterials with nontrivial, locally varying geometry. The limitations of traditional computer‐aided design tools are circumvented and allow the simulation of complex buckling and collapse behaviors without a manual meshing step. By validating these simulations against experimental data from tests on fabricated samples, sweeping exploration of the plate lattice design space is enabled. Numerical and experimental tests demonstrate plate lattices absorb up to six times more impact energy at equivalent densities relative to foams and shield objects from impacts ten times more energetic while transmitting equivalent peak stresses. In contrast to previous investigations of plate lattice metamaterials, designs with nonuniform geometric prebuckling in the out‐of‐plane direction is explored and showed that these designs exhibit 10% higher energy absorption efficiency on average and 25% higher in the highest‐performing design. This study aims to compare two small-sized axial fans: one is the classic axial fan (referred to as "Model A") and the other is an innovative design using the natural pattern of the Fibonacci spiral (referred to as "Model B"), which is found in natural phenomena such as hurricanes, nautilus shells, galaxies, and more. The comparison process is carried out using the Solidworks Flow Simulation tool, generating torque, flow, speed, noise level, and pressure graphs through parametric simulations. The study arises from the growing need for efficient, quiet, and low-energy cooling to dissipate heat generated by electronic components. The methodology follows a logical and proprietary sequence, broken down into three design phases. In Phase 1, models are developed following the Fibonacci spiral constraint and simulated at 2000 RPM to maximize fluid flow. Phase 2 focuses on optimizing speed and flow by varying the angle of attack, the number of blades, and their length. Finally, Phase 3 presents the final model, with dimensions similar to the classic design but featuring stratified and curved blades, and a thickness of 0.5 mm to improve flow. The most notable results reveal that the new design exhibits low levels of torque, flow, and noise. For example, at speeds greater than 3500 RPM, Model B shows an average noise reduction of 3.4%. Under the same torque consumption conditions, Model B rotates at 6000 RPM and Model A rotates at 3300 RPM; under these conditions, flow gains of up to 28.81% can be achieved. The main research questions concern the types of technologies currently used, the primary design considerations, and the ways user experience can be enhanced in accordance with the artists' and curators' vision, as well as visitors' needs. Moreover, the paper also examines relevant evaluation criteria. The manuscript reviews the types of technologies used for virtual art exhibitions and examines their design characteristics and pertinent issues on interfaces, resources, and affordances. Furthermore, an analysis of the use of virtual humans as a model for increased engagement follows a discussion of a comparison between virtual versus physical exhibitions. Moreover, the parameters that affect user experience are discussed thoroughly, given their pivotal importance in such exhibitions. Finally, the paper concludes with a discussion of the above-mentioned aspects of XR exhibitions with an emphasis on optimizing design for art-related content and offering informed suggestions for future directions. The overall scope of this paper is to examine ways to exploit XR as a creative medium rather than merely replicate physical exhibitions.
