ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study is to examine the effects of Confucian values, social fear and organizational knowledge sharing culture on the knowledge sharing intention of Information Systems (IS) professionals in an East Asian context. We surveyed 187 professionals working in IS in South Korean companies and applied partial least squares structural equation modeling for testing our hypotheses. The results show that Confucian values negatively influence knowledge sharing intention by increasing social fear. Conversely, knowledge sharing culture enhances knowledge sharing intention directly, and by mitigating the negative effects of Confucian values and social fear. Thus, while individuals’ reluctance to share knowledge has been conceptualized as a rational cost-benefit process in a Western context, our study shows that negative emotions and the underlying values, which stimulate these emotions, influence knowledge sharing intention in an East Asian context.

In the IT industry, flawed software is being blamed for the increasing numbers of computer viruses that plague information systems and the escalating costs to repair these viruses. This paper examines whether the market penalizes firms that produce substandard IT products. We use the event study methodology to assess the impact of public virus announcements on the stock prices of responsible IT vendors between 1988 and 2002. The results show that the market reacts negatively to the production of flawed Information Technology in approximately 50% of the cases. However, this negative market reaction is not statistically significant over extended periods and is limited to announcements involving certain types of defects (i.e., IT products that contain computer viruses). There was no statistically significant negative market reaction for announcements involving IT products that are susceptible to computer viruses. Our analysis implies that unlike in other industries, market forces alone cannot be used as an effective control mechanism for the production of substandard IT products. The study concludes that under these present conditions, IT vendors have little economic incentives to invest in defect-free computing. The article discusses the diffusion of innovation in the context of the adoption of new technologies, examining the decision that Comcast made to adopt IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6). Comcast had exhausted the private IP address space used for their networking infrastructure management, the authors state. Topics include levels of risk aversion associated with the adoption of new technology, gaining competitive advantage in the cable industry, and delaying implementation of new technology until the technology matures.
