Information on the life histories of male macaques after leaving their natal troops is limited. A solitary male Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata), estimated to be 5 years old, appeared in the urban area of Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, northern Japan, where no troops are distributed, in May 2023. Because the animal was habituated to and fed frequently on garden crops, it likely came from the western part of the prefecture, where multiple crop-feeding troops are distributed. The male stayed in the hilly area in the central part of the city until June and then moved north in July. The male moved south to the tip of the Oshika Peninsula and returned to the urban area in August, after which the location of the male was unknown. This study demonstrated that (1) male macaques can move > 40 km from their natal troop, (2) the daily travel distance (average: 0.9 km) of solitary males was similar to that of troop animals, whereas the home-range size of solitary males was much bigger than that for single animals, and (3) the home-range location of solitary males changes quickly. There is little information on maternal behaviour that deprives offspring of food, but some Japanese macaque, Macaca fuscata, mothers have been observed to snatch food from their offspring and eat it. This study investigated maternal food snatching behaviour (MFSB) and its impact on the growth of their offspring in provisioned, free-ranging Japanese macaques. The amount of food a mother snatched from her offspring was estimated to be 51.2% by dry weight compared to the amount of solid food an infant of the same age took in. Body mass growth of affected infants indicated a below-average mass gain. Recent evidence indicates that human ancestors utilized a combination of quadrupedal walking, climbing, and bipedal walking. Therefore, the origin of bipedalism may be linked to underlying mechanisms supporting diverse locomotor modes. This study aimed to elucidate foundations of varied locomotor modes from the perspective of motor control by identifying muscle synergies and demonstrating similarities in synergy compositions across different locomotor modes in chimpanzees and Japanese macaques. Four muscle synergies were extracted for bipedal and quadrupedal walking in both the chimpanzees and macaques, as well as for vertical climbing in the chimpanzees. Bipedal walking synergies were generally analogous to those observed in quadrupedal walking and vertical climbing. Specifically, the bipedal walking synergies during the stance and swing phase in the chimpanzees were substitutable with those of vertical climbing and quadrupedal walking, respectively. For the macaque, not all bipedal walking synergies exhibited similarities to quadrupedal walking synergies, likely due to instability during the single support phase of bipedalism. These findings suggest that synergies from vertical climbing and quadrupedal walking might be transferred to bipedal walking, as seen in the chimpanzees, and that this sharing of synergies might form a foundation for a diverse range of locomotor capacities including bipedal walking. Simple Summary: Japanese macaques, also known as snow monkeys, are known for their ability to huddle together in cold weather to stay warm. However, the size of these huddling groups can vary greatly across different regions, with exceptionally large clusters observed on Shodoshima Island compared to smaller groups in colder areas. This study used computer simulations to understand the factors influencing these huddling behaviours. By modelling individual decisions to join or leave a huddle based on temperature, group size, and other simple rules, we found that environmental conditions and local social dynamics play key roles in determining huddle size. Larger groups tend to form more clusters, but individual preferences and social tolerance also shape these behaviours. Our findings highlight how simple behaviours at the individual level can lead to complex group patterns. Understanding these dynamics not only helps us learn more about how animals survive in extreme conditions but also provides insights into the social structures and adaptability of Japanese macaques, which could inform conservation strategies and studies on animal behaviour. Huddling behaviour is observed across various mammalian and avian species. Huddling, a behaviour wherein animals maintain close physical contact with conspecifics for warmth and social bonding, is widely documented among species in cold environments as a crucial thermoregulatory mechanism. Interestingly, on Shodoshima, Japanese macaques form exceptionally large huddling clusters, often exceeding 50 individuals, a significant deviation from the smaller groups observed in other populations (Arashyama, Katsuyama, and Taksakiyama) and climates. This study aims to uncover the mechanisms behind the formation and size of these huddling clusters, proposing that such behaviours can be explained by simple probabilistic rules influenced by environmental conditions, the current cluster size, and individual decisions. Employing a computational model developed in Netlogo, we seek to demonstrate how emergent properties like the formation and dissolution of clusters arise from collective individual actions. We investigate whether the observed differences in huddling behaviour, particularly the larger cluster sizes on Shodoshima compared to those in colder habitats, reflect variations in social tolerance and cohesion. The model incorporates factors such as environmental temperature, cluster size, and individual decision-making, offering insights into the adaptability of social behaviours under environmental pressures. The findings suggest that temperature plays a crucial role in influencing huddling behaviour, with larger clusters forming in colder climates as individuals seek warmth. However, the study also highlights the importance of joining and leaving a cluster in terms of probability in the dynamics of huddling behaviour. We discussed the large clusters on Shodoshima as a result of a combination of environmental factors and a unique social tolerance and cohesion among the macaques. This study contributes to our understanding of complex social phenomena through the lens of self-organisation, illustrating how simple local interactions can give rise to intricate social structures and behaviours. Abstract The Social Intelligence Hypothesis predicts that complex social environments promote higher cognitive capacities. This hypothesis is often tested by comparing species or conspecific groups with varying group sizes or social structures. However, individual social environments differ not only among species or groups but also within the same group. We examined the relationship between social centrality and cognitive ability in wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata). We created a grooming network using data from 196 adult macaques and calculated social centrality for each individual. We then tested the macaques with a cognitive test battery to assess their abilities in social, physical, and inhibitory control domains. Our findings revealed that social centrality was uniquely associated with inhibitory control performance, particularly in the behavioral inhibition task, but not with other cognitive domains. This suggests that inhibitory control, a key component of executive functions, plays a pivotal role in the social lives of wild Japanese macaques.

We opportunistically observed 31 cases of responses to sudden loud noises mainly caused by falling rocks and trees in a free-ranging, provisioned group of Japanese macaques, Macaca fuscata, at Katsuyama, Japan, and analyzed 27 cases for which we successfully recorded their responses. In 88% of the 24 cases in which the highest- or second-highest ranking adult male probably heard the noise, one or both of them vocalized aggressively in response. Other males tended to vocalize when they were far away from the two highest-ranking males (in 5 of 7 cases in which they vocalized). Adult females vocalized in only 8% of cases, even when they fled from the noise source. These findings suggest that, unlike tree-shaking and female-directed aggression – both performed often in the mating season and accompanied by vocalizations in both high- and low-ranking males of Japanese macaques – vocalizing in response to sudden loud noises is usually limited to one or two high-ranking males in the vicinity. This vocal response could be a way for the males to advertise their social status; it may also serve to calm group members scared by the noise, preventing them from fleeing in panic and dispersing widely. Our observations also suggest that males may monitor which other males remain nearby, and that whereas females may scream in response to socially induced fear, they are least likely to do so in response to fear arising from non-social contexts. Females other than the mother often handle infant primates. In some cases, this infant handling can affect the infant negatively and persist after that (excessive infant handling [EIH]). We tested two hypothesized functions (reproductive competition and social bridging) and three hypothesized mechanisms (social exchange, inexperience, and accessibility) for EIH to investigate why and how handlers perform EIH. We recorded infant handling bouts (n = 1446) involving 12 wild, 0- to 16-week-old Japanese macaques inhabiting Yakushima Island (Macaca fuscata yakui) through all-occurrence sampling. We found that aggression tended not to become EIH and that adults performed EIH more than subadults and juveniles. We also found that handlers groomed mothers less before EIH than before non-EIH. Handlers performed EIH, rather than non-EIH, toward infants who were out of contact with mothers and those of closer-ranking, higher-ranking, and unfamiliar females. These results suggest that EIH is not performed for reproductive competition but for social bridging with higher-value social partners. Social bridges with such individuals may be important in despotic species, such as that of the Japanese macaque. Our findings also suggest that EIH does not occur through proximate mechanisms of social exchange and inexperience with infants but partially through accessibility of infants. Handlers reduce the cost of EIH by choosing accessible infants (those who were out of contact with mothers and those of closer-ranking females), but at the same time, maternal tolerance allows the handlers to choose inaccessible infants (those of higher-ranking and unfamiliar females). Primates show large interindividual variability in the character and quantity of interactions between mothers and their immature offspring. Multiple studies have documented associations between maternal behavior and the occurrence or frequency of certain behaviors among offspring, but it remains unclear whether and how early maternal interactions generally affect behavioral development in offspring. We followed two wild groups of Japanese macaques on Yakushima island and investigated the relationship between maternal behavior and several types of behavior performed by 35 juvenile offspring. We further asked if the impact of maternal behavior on juvenile behavior persists regardless of the distance between mother and offspring, testing whether the influence extends beyond cases when the mother is nearby. We found that juveniles whose mothers frequently rejected them approached and played with others more often, independent of their mother's presence. Juveniles of more protective mothers were in proximity to fewer other individuals and played less, but only if their mothers were nearby. Maternal rejection appears to exert a generalized effect on offspring behavior that endures when mothers are absent. In contrast, effects of maternal protectiveness may be temporary and/or reflect direct maternal influences, such as active intervention in offspring interactions, or effects of the mother's own social relationships on offspring interactions. Our results suggest that understanding how maternal behavior affects offspring development requires paying attention to the context of juvenile behavior, including the mother's distance from her offspring. Reproductive success can be attributed to both resident and non-resident males in non-human primates. However, reproductive success of non-resident males has rarely been investigated at an individual level. As resident males achieve different degree of reproductive success with regard to various factors, such as male dominance relationships or female mate choice, the degree of reproductive success for non-resident males may vary between individuals. As male reproductive success is highly skewed towards specific individuals, the percentage of similar-aged paternal siblings within groups is expected to increase. However, the extent to which each male contributes to the production of cohorts of paternal siblings remains unclear. Here we examined the paternity of offspring born over five consecutive years in a free-ranging group of Japanese macaques Macaca fuscata on Shodoshima Island, Kagawa Prefecture. Genotypes of 87 individuals at 16 autosomal microsatellite loci were analyzed and paternity of 34 offspring was successfully assigned to a single candidate father. We quantitatively assessed paternity success for resident and a few non-resident males whose genetic samples were successfully collected. We quantitatively assessed the percentages of paternal siblings in the same age cohorts produced by those males. Non-resident males sired similar percentage of offspring compared to resident males. A large prime-aged non-resident male was the most successful sire among males in two of the five years. These results provide new insights that male reproductive success could be highly skewed toward a specific non-resident male. Subadult males had a lower percentage of paternity success, which may be because females may prefer physically mature males. Various males, including non-resident males, contributed to the creation of paternal sibling in the same age cohort. Changes in the rate of self‐directed behavior—a proxy for social tension—offer valuable insights into individuals' experiences of social interactions. Many studies have tested the tension‐reduction hypothesis, whereby grooming is expected to reduce social tension in the grooming partners. However, it is still unclear whether responses to grooming are affected by social factors such as an individual's role or social relationship with their partner, and whether responses are similar for females and males. Focussing on same‐sex grooming in Yakushima Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata yakui), we analyzed the effects of two social factors on the change in the rate of self‐scratching after receiving grooming: sitting in contact with their partner outside of grooming contexts (as a measure of relationship strength) and rank distance. We collected 10‐min postgrooming and matched‐control focal samples on recipients of grooming. After controlling for postinhibitory rebound effects, grooming reduced scratching in females (suggesting that grooming was relaxing for the receiver), but not in males. In females, this reduction was associated with increased sitting in contact and increased rank distance: being groomed was more tension‐reducing if the grooming partners spent time together outside of grooming contexts, or if their difference in rank was greater and therefore more conspicuous. The reduction effect was mediated by sitting in contact only when females had a higher‐ranking—that is, more dominant and potentially aggressive—groomer. Our findings suggest that not all grooming interactions are perceived as equal, which has implications for its use as an index of relationship quality. To our knowledge, this represents the first study of postgrooming social tension in male Japanese macaques and our results highlight the need for caution when generalizing findings from only one sex to the species level. Objectives: Metatarsal bones constitute a key functional unit of the foot in primates. While the form‐function relationships of metatarsals have been extensively studied, particularly in relation to the loss of the grasping ability of the foot in humans in contrast to apes, the effect of phyletic history on the metatarsal morphology and its variability remains largely unknown. Materials and Methods: Here, we evaluate how the strength of the phylogenetic signal varies from the first to the fifth metatarsal in humans, chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans, gibbons, and Japanese macaques. We use computed tomography imaging and morphometric mapping to quantify the second moment of area around and along the metatarsal shaft and evaluate the strength of the phylogenetic signal with multivariate K‐statistics. Results: The shaft structure of the first metatarsal, but not the others, correlates well with the phylogeny of apes and humans. Discussion: Given the importance of the first metatarsal for grasping and bipedal/quadrupedal locomotion, the strong phylogenetic but weak functional signal in its structure is unexpected. These findings suggest that the evolutionary diversification of hominoid locomotor behaviors, including human bipedality, is only partly reflected in form‐function relationships of key skeletal elements, and that phylogenetic history acted as a major evolutionary constraint. Introduction: Using a non-human primate (NHP) model of maternal Westernstyle diet (mWSD) feeding during pregnancy and lactation, we previously reported altered offspring beta:alpha cell ratio in vivo and insulin hypersecretion ex vivo. Mitochondria are known to maintain beta-cell function by producing ATP for insulin secretion. In response to nutrient stress, the mitochondrial network within beta cells undergoes morphological changes to maintain respiration and metabolic adaptability. Given that mitochondrial dynamics have also been associated with cellular fate transitions, we assessed whether mWSD exposure was associated with changes in markers of beta-cell maturity and/or mitochondrial morphology that might explain the offspring islet phenotype. Methods: We evaluated the expression of beta-cell identity/maturity markers (NKX6.1, MAFB, UCN3) via florescence microscopy in islets of Japanese macaque pre-adolescent (1 year old) and peri-adolescent (3-year-old) offspring born to dams fed either a control diet or WSD during pregnancy and lactation and weaned onto WSD. Mitochondrial morphology in NHP offspring beta cells was analyzed in 2D by transmission electron microscopy and in 3D using super resolution microscopy to deconvolve the beta-cell mitochondrial network. Results: There was no difference in the percent of beta cells expressing key maturity markers in NHP offspring from WSD-fed dams at 1 or 3 years of age; however, beta cells of WSD-exposed 3 year old offspring showed increased levels of NKX6.1 per beta cell at 3 years of age. Regardless of maternal diet, the beta-cell mitochondrial network was found to be primarily short and fragmented at both ages in NHP; overall mitochondrial volume increased with age. In utero and lactational exposure to maternal WSD consumption may increase mitochondrial fragmentation. Discussion: Despite mWSD consumption having clear developmental effects on offspring beta:alpha cell ratio and insulin secretory response to glucose, this does not appear to be mediated by changes to beta-cell maturity or the beta-cell mitochondrial network. Individual identification plays a pivotal role in ecology and ethology, notably as a tool for complex social structures understanding. However, traditional identification methods often involve invasive physical tags and can prove both disruptive for animals and time-intensive for researchers. In recent years, the integration of deep learning in research has offered new methodological perspectives through the automatisation of complex tasks. Harnessing object detection and recognition technologies is increasingly used by researchers to achieve identification on video footage. This study represents a preliminary exploration into the development of a non-invasive tool for face detection and individual identification of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) through deep learning. The ultimate goal of this research is, using identification done on the dataset, to automatically generate a social network representation of the studied population. The current main results are promising: (i) the creation of a Japanese macaques' face detector (Faster-RCNN model), reaching an accuracy of 82.2% and (ii) the creation of an individual recogniser for the Kōjima Island macaque population (YOLOv8n model), reaching an accuracy of 83%. We also created a Kōjima population social network by traditional methods, based on co-occurrences on videos. Thus, we provide a benchmark against which the automatically generated network will be assessed for reliability. These preliminary results are a testament to the potential of this approach to provide the scientific community with a tool for tracking individuals and social network studies in Japanese macaques. Facial features of immature individuals play a pivotal role in eliciting caretaking behaviors in humans. It has been posited that non-human animals share particular infantile facial features with humans, which can elicit caregivers' attention and caretaking behaviors. Nevertheless, the empirical examination of this hypothesis is extremely limited. In this study, we investigated infantile facial features in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), their developmental processes, and their correlation with caretaking and infant behaviors, based on 470 facial photographs from one free-ranging group. We measured the size of facial parts and evaluated these features using non-contact procedures with the animals. The results indicated that, although some partial species differences were observed, the infantile facial features in Japanese macaques were broadly consistent with those previously observed in humans and great apes. Furthermore, half of the infant subjects displayed non-linear developmental trajectories of infantile faces, similar to those suggested in humans. However, unlike previous studies in humans, infantile faces were not significantly associated with maternal or non-maternal caretaking behaviors, nor were their developmental changes correlated with infant behavioral development. These findings indicate that while many aspects of infantile facial features are shared among particular primates, humans may have evolved a uniquely elevated preference for selecting such features among the primate lineage. When locomoting bipedally at higher speeds, macaques preferred unilateral skipping (galloping). The same skipping pattern was maintained while hurdling across two low obstacles at the distance of a stride within our experimental track. The present study investigated leg and trunk joint rotations and leg joint moments, with the aim of clarifying the differential leg and trunk operation during skipping in bipedal macaques. Especially at the hip, the range of joint rotation and extension at lift off was larger in the leading than in the trailing leg. The flexing knee absorbed energy and the extending ankle generated work during each step. The trunk showed only minor deviations from symmetry. Hurdling amplified the differences and notably resulted in a quasi‐elastic use of the leading knee and in an asymmetric operation of the trunk. Highlights: Macaques trained for bipedal locomotion liked to skip. With a single double support and a flight phase during a stride skipping represents a gait between walking and running. Skipping enforced differential operation of the trailing and leading leg, respectively. Thereby, a quasi‐elastic behavior of the whole leg is organized without a quasi‐elastic operation of the knee. However, when the macaques skipped across hurdles, a strong rebound was observed in the leading leg. A captive chimpanzee named DD in Xi'an Qinling Wildlife Park, China, was observed sharing food with baboons in a neighboring enclosure. DD actively gathered, carried, and threw food to the baboons, showing signs of planning and empathy. This cross-species food sharing behavior was altruistic, with DD choosing what to give and how much to transfer, leading to conflict cessation among the baboons. The study suggests that DD may have derived pleasure from controlling the behavior of the baboons and providing for them, similar to the enjoyment experienced by people when feeding animals. Bartonella quintana, the causative agent of trench fever, is an intracellular bacterium that infects human erythrocytes and vascular endothelial cells. For many years, humans were considered the only natural hosts for B. quintana; however, it was recently discovered that wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) also serve as hosts for B. quintana. To elucidate the genetic characteristics of the B. quintana strain MF1-1 isolated from a Japanese macaque, we determined the complete genome sequence of the strain and compared it with those of strain Toulouse from a human and strain RM-11 from a rhesus macaque. General genomic features and orthologous gene cluster profiles are similar among the three strains, and strain MF1-1 is genetically closer to strain RM-11 than strain Toulouse based on the average nucleotide identity values; however, a significant inversion of approximately 0.68 Mb was detected in the chromosome of strain MF1-1. Moreover, the Japanese macaque strains lacked the bepA gene, which is responsible for anti-apoptotic function, and the trwL2, trwL4, and trwL6 genes, which may be involved in adhesion to erythrocytes of rhesus macaque and human. Hemotropic mycoplasmas, also known as hemoplasmas, are parasitic bacteria that infect red blood cells, potentially leading to varying degrees of anemia across numerous mammalian species, including nonhuman primates. The present study aims to investigate the prevalence of hemoplasma infection and identify the species involved among free-ranging Assamese macaques (Macaca assamensis) inhabiting northern Thailand. A total of 133 blood samples were collected from Assamese macaques in Chiang Rai province, Thailand, and subjected to screening for hemoplasma infection utilizing nested PCR amplification targeting the 16S rRNA gene. Positive samples were subsequently analyzed through nucleotide sequencing and phylogenetic analysis for putative species identification. Current study results revealed that 17.3% (23/133; 95% CI 11.29-24.81) of Assamese macaques tested positive for hemoplasma infection using the nested PCR assay. Partial 16S rRNA sequences derived from hemoplasma isolates in Assamese macaques exhibited 99% homology, forming a cluster within the same phylogenetic clade as "Candidatus Mycoplasma haematomacacae," previously identified in long-tailed macaques, rhesus macaques, and Japanese macaques. These findings suggest the presence of "Ca. M. haematomacacae" not only in long-tailed macaques and rhesus macaques but also in Assamese macaques in Thailand. To our knowledge, this marks the first molecular detection of "Ca. M. haematomacacae" in Assamese macaques in Thailand. Global climate change has transformed predictions of fire seasons in the near future, and record‐breaking wildfire events have had catastrophic consequences in recent years. In September 2020, multiple wildfires subjected Oregon to hazardous air quality for several days. In this retrospective cohort study, we aimed to examine prenatal loss, morbidity, and mortality of rhesus (Macaca mulatta) and Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) exposed to poor air quality from the nearby wildfires. Detailed medical records from 2014 to 2020 of 580 macaques housed outdoors at a research facility in Beaverton, Oregon were used to evaluate the association between these health outcomes and wildfire smoke exposure. Logistic regression models estimated excess prenatal loss, hospitalization rates, respiratory problems, and mortality during and following the wildfire event, and Kruskal–Wallis statistics were used to determine if infant growth was affected by wildfire smoke exposure. Risk of pregnancy loss (relative risk = 4.1; p < 0.001) and odds of diagnosis with a respiratory problem (odds ratio = 4.47; p = 0.003) were higher in exposed infant macaques compared to nonexposed infants. Infant growth was not affected by poor air quality exposure. Our findings suggest wildfire smoke exposure poses a risk to the health of infants and pregnant individuals and should be monitored more closely in the future. Highlights: Pregnancies exposed to wildfire smoke in 2020 were 4.1 times as likely to have been lost compared to pregnancies not exposed in years 2014–2019.The odds of developing a respiratory condition 1‐year postexposure in infants was 4.5 times the odds of developing a respiratory condition in unexposed infants. Objectives: Morphological variation among extant primates in the lumbar vertebral column is well studied. However, knowledge concerning the thoracic spine, an important region responsible for supporting and facilitating movement in the upper trunk, remains relatively scarce. Consequently, our comprehension of the functional differentiation exhibited throughout the thoracolumbar vertebral column among various primate species remains constrained. In this study, we examined patterns of morphological variation in the thoracolumbar vertebral column of extant hominoids, cercopithecoids, and Ateles. Materials and Methods: We collected external shape data on 606 thoracic and lumbar vertebrae from Homo sapiens, Pan troglodytes, Hylobates lar, Macaca fuscata, Chlorocebus aethiops, Colobus guereza, Ateles geoffroyi, and A. belzebuth. Forty‐four landmarks were obtained on the three‐dimensional surface. Geometric morphometrics was used to quantify the centroid size and variation of the shapes of thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. Results: Cercopithecoids exhibited greater variation in the size and shape of their thoracic and lumbar vertebrae compared to hominoids and Ateles. Although many vertebral features contributed to the observed variation throughout the thoracolumbar vertebral column within the taxon, the transverse and spinous processes exhibited relatively major contributions. Discussion: Our results suggest that quadrupedal locomotion requires the functional differentiation between thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, and for hominoids, functional adaptation to orthograde posture necessitates a relatively more uniform shape of thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. We examined the conception rate of wild Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) in Fukushima City that were exposed to radiation as a result of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in March 2011. The conception rate in the year of delivery from 2009 to 2022 was estimated by dissecting individuals that were euthanized by the government for population control as a countermeasure against crop damage. To evaluate the effects of exposure, the cumulative exposure dose for each individual was calculated using the concentration of radiocesium deposited in the soil at the capture site and the concentration of radiocesium in muscle estimated from the aggregated transfer factor. There were no significant differences in conception rates across all age classes over time. In terms of conception rates by age class, there was a significant decrease post-exposure compared with pre-exposure in the age class ≥ 8 years, but no significant differences in the age class 5–7 years. The non-ovulation rate did not significantly differ between the pre- and post-exposure periods for any age class. Body fat index, which can affect fertility, was compared between the pre- and post-exposure periods, and no significant differences were found in either age class. In contrast, the median total cumulative exposure (cumulative internal exposure + cumulative external exposure) was significantly higher in the age class ≥ 8 years compared with the age class 5–7 years. These results suggest that the total cumulative exposure dose may be one of the reasons for the lower conception rate in the post-exposure period among the age class ≥ 8 years. The latest advances in artificial intelligence technology have opened doors to the video analysis of complex behaviours. In light of this, ethologists are actively exploring the potential of these innovations to streamline the time-intensive behavioural analysis process using video data. Several tools have been developed for this purpose in primatology in the past decade. Nonetheless, each tool grapples with technical constraints. To address these limitations, we have established a comprehensive protocol designed to harness the capabilities of a cutting-edge artificial intelligence-assisted software, LabGym. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the suitability of LabGym for the analysis of primate behaviour, focusing on Japanese macaques as our model subjects. First, we developed a model that accurately detects Japanese macaques, allowing us to analyse their actions using LabGym. Our behavioural analysis model succeeded in recognising stone-handling-like behaviours on video. However, the absence of quantitative data within the specified time frame limits the ability of our study to draw definitive conclusions regarding the quality of the behavioural analysis. Nevertheless, to the best of our knowledge, this study represents the first instance of applying the LabGym tool specifically for the analysis of primate behaviours, with our model focusing on the automated recognition and categorisation of specific behaviours in Japanese macaques. It lays the groundwork for future research in this promising field to complexify our model using the latest version of LabGym and associated tools, such as multi-class detection and interactive behaviour analysis. Human retroviruses are derived from simian ones through cross-species transmission. These retroviruses are associated with little pathogenicity in their natural hosts, but in humans, HIV causes AIDS, and human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) induces adult T-cell leukemia--lymphoma (ATL). We analyzed the proviral sequences of HTLV-1, HTLV-2, and simian T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (STLV-1) from Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) and found that APOBEC3G (A3G) frequently generates G-to-A mutations in the HTLV-1 provirus, whereas such mutations are rare in the HTLV-2 and STLV-1 proviruses. Therefore, we investigated the mechanism of how HTLV-2 is resistant to human A3G (hA3G). HTLV-1, HTLV-2, and STLV-1 encode the so-called antisense proteins, HTLV-1 bZIP factor (HBZ), Antisense protein of HTLV-2 (APH-2), and STLV-1 bZIP factor (SBZ), respectively. APH-2 efficiently inhibits the deaminase activity of both hA3G and simian A3G (sA3G). HBZ and SBZ strongly suppress sA3G activity but only weakly inhibit hA3G, suggesting that HTLV-1 is incompletely adapted to humans. Unexpectedly, hA3G augments the activation of the transforming growth factor (TGF)-β/Smad pathway by HBZ, and this activation is associated with ATL cell proliferation by up-regulating BATF3/IRF4 and MYC. In contrast, the combination of APH-2 and hA3G, or the combination of SBZ and sA3G, does not enhance the TGF-β/Smad pathway. Thus, HTLV-1 is vulnerable to hA3G but utilizes it to promote the proliferation of infected cells via the activation of the TGF-β/Smad pathway. Simple Summary: Information on the host range and genetic diversity of members of the Circoviridae family is quickly increasing, but the ecology of these viruses remains largely unknown. In this study, using a panviral PCR targeting the Rep gene, we detected CyV DNA in rectal and saliva swabs collected from 48 NHPs housed in Bioparco—Rome Zoological Garden (Italy) and in the Anima Natura Wild Sanctuary Semproniano (Grosseto, Italy), with an overall prevalence of 18.7% (9/48). When reconstructing the sequence and genome organization of five strains, all CyVs appeared genetically highly related (98.3–98.6% nucleotide identity) to a CyV strain (RI196/ITA) detected in the intestinal content of a Maltese wall lizard (Podarcis filfolensis) in Italy. Circoviruses (CVs) and cycloviruses (CyVs), members of the family Circoviridae, have been identified only occasionally in non-human primates (NHPs). In this study, we investigated the presence and genetic features of these viruses in 48 NHPs housed in the Bioparco—Rome Zoological Garden (Italy) and in the Anima Natura Wild Sanctuary Semproniano (Grosseto, Italy), testing fecal, saliva, and serum samples with a broadly reactive consensus nested PCR able of amplifying a partial region of the replicase (Rep) gene of members of the family Circoviridae. Viral DNA was detected in a total of 10 samples, including a saliva swab and 9 fecal samples collected, respectively from five Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) and four mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx), with an overall prevalence of 18.7% (9/48). On genome sequencing, five strains revealed the highest nucleotide identity (98.3–98.6%) to a CyV strain (RI196/ITA) detected in the intestinal content of a Maltese wall lizard (Podarcis filfolensis) in Italy. Although the origin of the Italian NHP strains, genetically distant from previously detected NHP CyVs, is uncertain, our results also highlight that the virome of captive animals is modulated by the different dietary and environmental sources of exposure. Perinatal exposure to a high-fat, high-sugar Western-style diet (WSD) is associated with altered neural circuitry in the melanocortin system. This association may have an underlying inflammatory component, as consumption of a WSD during pregnancy can lead to an elevated inflammatory environment. Our group previously demonstrated that prenatal WSD exposure was associated with increased markers of inflammation in the placenta and fetal hypothalamus in Japanese macaques. In this follow-up study, we sought to determine whether this heightened inflammatory state persisted into the postnatal period, as prenatal exposure to inflammation has been shown to reprogram offspring immune function and long-term neuroinflammation would present a potential means for prolonged disruptions to microglia-mediated neuronal circuit formation. Neuroinflammation was approximated in 1-yr-old offspring by counting resident microglia and peripherally derived macrophages in the region of the hypothalamus examined in the fetal study, the arcuate nucleus (ARC). Microglia and macrophages were immunofluorescently stained with their shared marker, ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba1), and quantified in 11 regions along the rostral-caudal axis of the ARC. A mixed-effects model revealed main effects of perinatal diet (P = 0.011) and spatial location (P = 0.003) on Iba1-stained cell count. Perinatal WSD exposure was associated with a slight decrease in the number of Iba1-stained cells, and cells were more densely located in the center of the ARC. These findings suggest that the heightened inflammatory state experienced in utero does not persist postnatally. The role of hybridization in morphological diversification is a fundamental topic in evolutionary biology. However, despite the accumulated knowledge on adult hybrid variation, how hybridization affects ontogenetic allometry is less well understood. Here, we investigated the effects of hybridization on postnatal ontogenetic allometry in the skulls of a putative hybrid population of introduced Taiwanese macaques (Macaca cyclopis) and native Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata). Genomic analyses indicated that the population consisted of individuals with varying degrees of admixture, formed by male migration from Japanese to Taiwanese macaques. For overall skull shape, ontogenetic trajectories were shifted by hybridization in a nearly additive manner, with moderate transgressive variation observed throughout development. In contrast, for the maxillary sinus (hollow space in the face), hybrids grew as fast as Taiwanese macaques, diverging from Japanese macaques, which showed slow growth. Consequently, adult hybrids showed a mosaic pattern, that is, the maxillary sinus is as large as that of Taiwanese macaques, while the overall skull shape is intermediate. Our findings suggest that the transgressive variation can be caused by prenatal shape modification and nonadditive inheritance on regional growth rates, highlighting the complex genetic and ontogenetic bases underlying hybridization-induced morphological diversification. Non-human primates (NHPs) living in captive conditions are susceptible to intestinal parasites that can contribute to mortality and morbidity, and cause zoonotic infections. Thus, parasite surveys on NHP populations under human care are relevant as part of the evaluation of NHPs welfare and in the zoonotic disease risk assessment, as well as in the exploration of parasite transmission pathways, according to the One-Health concept. This study aimed to identify intestinal parasites infecting NHPs living in two wildlife recovery centers and in a zoological garden, in Italy. Ninety-three fecal samples from Macaca tonkeana, Macaca fascicularis, Sapajus apella, Chlorocebus aethiops, Macaca fuscata, Macaca sylvanus, and Cebus capucinus were collected at Piano dell'Abatino Park (Lazio), and fecal smears and flotation were performed in order to identify parasites according to morphological keys. Additionally, one carcass of M. fuscata from the Bioparco Zoological Garden of Rome (Lazio) and one of M. fascicularis from the Center for the Recovery of Exotic and Maremma Wild Animals (Tuscany) were necropsied and intestinal adult nematodes were collected and characterized at morphological and molecular level, using the mitochondrial cox1 and rrnL markers. Protozoans (Entamoeba coli, Iodamoeba bütschlii, Dientamoeba fragilis-like, Giardia sp.), chromists (Balantidium/ Buxtonella sp.) and nematodes (Capillaria sp., Trichuris sp., strongyliform larvae and Oesophagostomum sp.) were found through fecal smears and flotation. The collected adult nematodes from dead NHPs were morphologically identified as whipworms (genus Trichuris). Phylogenetic analyses grouped Trichuris specimens into the Trichuris trichiura complex of species, with specimens from M. fuscata clustering into a host-specific branch, and whipworms from M. fascicularis clustering within a clade formed by Trichuris infecting several primate species, including humans. The results here collected revealed the presence of potentially zoonotic parasites circulating in captive primates in Italy, providing useful information for the formulation of management and care plans for captive NHPs, and for the elaboration of safety measures for visitors and animal keepers. Plane-form enamel hypoplasia (PFEH) is a severe dental defect in which large areas of the crown are devoid of enamel. This condition is rare in humans and even rarer in wild primates. The etiology of PFEH has been linked to exposure to severe disease, malnutrition, and environmental toxins and associated with systemic conditions. In this study, we examined the prevalence of enamel hypoplasia in several populations of wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) with the aim of providing context for severe defects observed in macaques from Yakushima Island. We found that 10 of 21 individuals (48%) from Yakushima Island displayed uniform and significant PFEH; all 10 specimens were from two adjacent locations in the south of the island. In contrast, macaques from other islands and from mainland Japan have a low prevalence of the more common types of enamel hypoplasia and none exhibit PFEH. In Yakushima macaques, every tooth type was affected to varying degrees except for first molars and primary teeth, and the mineral content of the remaining enamel in teeth with PFEH was normal (i.e., no hypo- or hypermineralization). The aetiology of PFEH might be linked to extreme weather events or high rates of environmental fluoride-causing enamel breakdown. However, given that the affected individuals underwent dental development during a period of substantial human-related habitat change, an anthropogenic-related etiology seems most likely. In the carotid body of laboratory rodents, adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP)-mediated transmission is regarded as critical for transmission from chemoreceptor type I cells to P2X3 purinoceptor-expressing sensory nerve endings. The present study investigated the distribution of P2X3-immunoreactive sensory nerve endings in the carotid body of the adult male Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscata) using multilabeling immunofluorescence. Immunoreactivity for P2X3 was detected in nerve endings associated with chemoreceptor type I cells immunoreactive for synaptophysin. Spherical or flattened terminal parts of P2X3-immunoreactive nerve endings were in close apposition to the perinuclear cytoplasm of synaptophysin-immunoreactive type I cells. Immunoreactivity for ectonucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase 2 (NTPDase2), which hydrolyzes extracellular ATP, was localized in the cell body and cytoplasmic processes of S100B-immunoreactive cells. NTPDase2-immunoreactive cells surrounded P2X3-immunoreactive terminal parts and synaptophysin-immunoreactive type I cells, but did not intrude into attachment surfaces between terminal parts and type I cells. Maternal consumption of a Western-style diet (mWD) during pregnancy alters fatty acid metabolism and reduces insulin sensitivity in fetal skeletal muscle. The long-term impact of these fetal adaptations and the pathways underlying disordered lipid metabolism are incompletely understood. Therefore, we tested whether a mWD chronically fed to lean, insulin-sensitive adult Japanese macaques throughout pregnancy and lactation would impact skeletal muscle oxidative capacity and lipid metabolism in adolescent offspring fed a postweaning (pw) Western-style diet (WD) or control diet (CD). Although body weight was not different, retroperitoneal fat mass and subscapular skinfold thickness were significantly higher in pwWD offspring consistent with elevated fasting insulin and glucose. Maximal complex I (CI)-dependent respiration in muscle was lower in mWD offspring in the presence of fatty acids, suggesting that mWD impacts muscle integration of lipid with nonlipid oxidation. Abundance of all five oxidative phosphorylation complexes and VDAC, but not ETF/ETFDH, were reduced with mWD, partially explaining the lower respiratory capacity with lipids. Muscle triglycerides increased with pwWD; however, the fold increase in lipid saturation, 1,2-diacylglycerides, and C18 ceramide compared between pwCD and pwWD was greatest in mWD offspring. Reductions in CI abundance and VDAC correlated with reduced markers of oxidative stress, suggesting that these reductions may be an early-life adaptation to mWD to mitigate excess reactive oxygen species. Altogether, mWD, independent of maternal obesity or insulin resistance, results in sustained metabolic reprogramming in offspring muscle despite a healthy diet intervention. Some nonhuman primate species, whose original habitats have been reclaimed by artificial activities, have acquired boldness toward humans which is evident based on the diminished frequency of escape behaviors. Eventually, such species have become regular users of human settlements, and are referred to as "urban primates." Considering this, we developed a noninvasive technique based on bioacoustics to provide a transparent assessment of troop addiction levels in anthropogenic environments, which are determined by the dependence on agricultural crops and human living sphere for their diets and daily ranging, respectively. We attempted to quantify the addiction levels based on the boldness of troops when raiding settlements, characterized by a "landscape of fear" because of the presence of humans as predators. We hypothesized that the boldness of troops could be measured using two indices: the frequency of raiding events on settlements and the amount of time spent there. For hypothesis testing, we devised an efficient method to measure these two indices using sound cues (i.e., spontaneous calls) for tracing troop movements that are obtainable throughout the day from most primate species (e.g., contact calls). We conducted a feasibility study of this assessment procedure, targeting troops of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata). For this study, we collected 346 recording weeks of data using autonomous recorders from 24 troops with different addiction levels during the nonsnowy seasons. The results demonstrated that troops that reached the threshold level, at which radical interventions including mass culling of troop members is officially permitted, could be readily identified based on the following behavioral characteristics: troop members raiding settlements two or three times per week and mean time spent in settlements per raiding event exceeding 0.4 h. Thus, bioacoustic monitoring could become a valid option to ensure the objectivity of policy judgment in urban primate management. Although knowledge of the functions of the gut microbiome has increased greatly over the past few decades, our understanding of the mechanisms governing its ecology and evolution remains obscure. While host genetic distance is a strong predictor of the gut microbiome in large‐scale studies and captive settings, its influence has not always been evident at finer taxonomic scales, especially when considering among the recently diverged animals in natural settings. Comparing the gut microbiome of 19 populations of Japanese macaques Macaca fuscata across the Japanese archipelago, we assessed the relative roles of host genetic distance, geographic distance and dietary factors in influencing the macaque gut microbiome. Our results suggested that the macaques may maintain a core gut microbiome, while each population may have acquired some microbes from its specific habitat/diet. Diet‐related factors such as season, forest, and reliance on anthropogenic foods played a stronger role in shaping the macaque gut microbiome. Among closely related mammalian hosts, host genetics may have limited effects on the gut microbiome since the hosts generally have smaller physiological differences. This study contributes to our understanding of the relative roles of host phylogeography and dietary factors in shaping the gut microbiome of closely related mammalian hosts. Background: Previous studies suggest that housing relocation may be stressful for captive non‐human primates. Our study investigated the stress levels of Japanese macaques during a housing relocation by measuring their daily fecal cortisol metabolites, which are often used as an indicator of stress. Methods: Ten adult Japanese macaques, single‐housed for research purposes, were relocated to a new facility. Fecal samples were collected daily for 7 days. Cortisol metabolite concentrations were determined via enzyme immunoassay. Results: No significant differences in cortisol metabolite levels were found in 7 days, but concentration levels showed that the highest median was associated to the relocation day. Conclusions: The minimal cortisol metabolite increase suggests that there was a slight activity increase in the hypothalamic‐pituitary‐adrenal axis. Techniques encouraging cooperation of the monkeys, the short time duration of the relocation, and consistency in the environment may have contributed to the minimal stress levels observed. This naturalistic note presents a series of observation of interspecies sexual behaviour involving Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata yakui) and Sika deer (Cervus Nippon yakushimae) on Yakushima Island, Japan. The initial observation in 2015 revealed a male macaque's attempt to engage in sexual activity with female deer, displaying mate-guarding behaviour. Subsequent observations in 2020, 2021 and 2023 showed the continuation of this behaviour and potentially the propagation to other macaques. We categorised this rare behaviour as a case of reproductive interference and explored hypotheses regarding its functionality. While some suggest nutritional benefits for the deer, others propose learning, incomplete species recognition, or mate deprivation hypotheses. This behaviour may also be selectively neutral, offering no direct fitness benefits, but rather represents a behavioural by-product of other interactions between these two species, which may themselves be adaptive. Furthermore, we hypothesise that the observed propagation may underlie social transmission and highlight the potential cognitive capacities of Japanese macaques involving social learning mechanisms and the willingness to adopt noninstinctual behaviours. How primate mothers interact with their dead infants has attracted much attention from primatologists. In particular, the care given to infant corpses has been well documented, and some researchers have employed quantitative analyses to explore the underlying mechanisms of this behavior. In contrast, instances of maternal cannibalism, another striking response to dead infants, are relatively uncommon and the factors contributing to this phenomenon remain unclear among primates. Here, we report a new case of stillbirth and subsequent maternal cannibalism that occurred in a free-ranging group of Japanese macaques residing on Awajishima Island, Japan. In the observed case, a multiparous female gave a stillbirth in the winter of 2022. The newborn appeared premature due to the lack of hair and unformed limbs, and the unseasonal birth. Initially, the mother cared for the newborn by licking and holding the body, but she suddenly began consuming the entire corpse, except for the parts around the head. This is the first case of maternal cannibalism by a multiparous mother of free-ranging Japanese macaque. We compared this case with those previously reported in Old World monkeys, and discussed the possible link between stillbirth, maternal care, and cannibalization towards deceased infants. In order to understand how primates comprehend the concepts of "death" and how their maternal relationships have evolved, it would be important to focus not only on maternal care toward dead infants but also cannibalism that could occur at the end of the caregiving. Space use, estimated based on location data, provides fundamental knowledge in the basic and applied ecology of wild animals. There is a trade-off between sampling frequency and duration in location data which are collected from a tracking device attached to an animal because the battery of the device has a limited life. In this study, we assessed how different combinations of sampling frequency and duration would affect estimates for home-range size and maximum utilization area (MUA) of Japanese macaques, using datasets subsampled by reducing frequency and/or duration from the original dataset. Estimates of MUA were likely to be overestimated if the sampling duration was shorter than 80 days for Japanese macaques. Reductions in sampling frequency and duration had opposite effects on estimates of home-range size: the estimated area decreased with decreasing sampling duration, while it increased with decreasing sampling frequency. Moreover, these opposite effects can be offset when the sampling frequency and duration are simultaneously reduced. The relationship between stress and behavior can help us to understand how physiological adaptations shape primate societies. Most studies have focused on glucocorticoids (GC) as stress biomarkers, but other extrinsic and intrinsic factors can influence GC levels and confound the results. To overcome this issue, including analyses of dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEAS), a GC antagonist, can be useful in evaluating overall adrenal function in response to biological, social, and environmental factors. Our goal was to evaluate the effect of reproductive state, social behavior, ambient temperature, and season (mating and non-mating) on DHEAS levels and the ratio between GC metabolites and DHEAS (GCM:DHEAS) in 11 free-ranging, female, Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) (7 pregnant/lactating, 4 nonpregnant/nonlactating) from Jigokudani Monkey Park (Japan). We validated and measured fecal DHEAS levels in 354 samples by enzyme immunoassay and calculated GCM:DHEAS by using previously reported data for GC metabolites. We tested the effects of reproductive state, dominance rank, social behavior, season, and ambient temperature on adrenal steroids using Generalized Linear Mixed-Effect Models. We found that pregnant and lactating females had higher DHEAS levels than nonpregnant/nonlactating females and that DHEAS levels were higher during the mating season. Temperature was positively correlated with GCM:DHEAS. Dominant females had higher DHEAS levels and lower GCM:DHEAS than subordinate females. We suggest that the high DHEAS to GC ratio in high-ranking females explains why they have better body condition than low-ranking females despite high GCM levels. Primates belong to the most endangered groups of animals on Earth and their keeping in captivity is usually associated with the need to protect endangered species and create a viable reserve population. However, primates are also kept as pets. The aim of the study was to assess the species and numbers of primates kept in the Czech Republic as pets; for comparison, the species and numbers of primates kept in Czech zoos were also monitored. According to the CITES register, a total of 7,708 primates of 79 species from nine families were kept in both types of facilities (data valid as of 31 December 2020). Of these, 3,821 individuals were kept as pets and 3,877 in zoos. The most commonly kept species were the western pygmy marmoset, common marmoset, golden-handed tamarin, Guianan squirrel monkey from the Cebidae family, ring-tailed lemurs and black-and-white ruffed lemur from the Lemuridae family, mandrill, guereza, Japanese macaque, and bonnet macaque from the Cercopithecidae family. No primates of the Hominidae and Atelidae families were recorded in the case of pet keeping. The results show that in the Czech Republic, the number of primates kept as pets is comparable to their numbers in zoos. However, the question is whether this is a positive finding, given the difficulty of creating conditions for pet primates that meet their requirements, and also given that the contribution of pet keeping to the preservation of their population on Earth is questionable. Biological market theory (BMT) predicts that the balance between supply and demand determines the economic value of a "commodity," which consequently determines the amount of "services" that an individual needs to provide to obtain the commodity. In infant handling among primates, the existing literature suggests that handlers need to groom a mother to obtain access to its infant, particularly when the value of the infant is high (e.g., when the number of infants is low). However, grooming by handlers may not be a prerequisite for the occurrence of infant handling, because handlers can handle an infant that is separated from its mother. Based on 3 years of behavioral observations of wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), we examined the process by which infant handling occurs and the role of grooming in infant handling. We found that infant handling occurred more frequently when the mother and infant were separated than when they were in contact. Grooming rarely occurred before infant handling. The subsequent occurrence of infant handling was not predicted by either the occurrence or duration of grooming toward mothers by non‐mother individuals. Grooming by handlers was also more likely to occur when an infant was in contact with its mother and when an infant's mother was dominant to the handlers. Contrary to BMT, the number of infants in a group did not affect grooming by handlers. These results indicate that the handlers' decision to groom depended on the opportunistic availability of an infant and the social relationship between the infant's mother and themselves. Flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) shows diverse muscle–tendon arrangements among primates. The intramuscular nerve distribution pattern is a criterion for discussing the homology of FDS. In this study, the muscle–tendon arrangement and intramuscular nerve distribution of FDS were examined in the siamang, western lowland gorilla, western chimpanzee, and Japanese macaques. The FDS had muscle bellies to digits II–V. FDS had proximal belly and intermediate tendon except for siamang. Distal belly to digit II (in the western lowland gorilla and western chimpanzees) or distal bellies to digits II and V (in Japanese macaque) originated from the intermediate tendon. In all specimens, nerve branches within digit III belly extended into digit IV belly, and nerve branch(es) within digit IV belly extended into digit V belly. This consistent pattern suggested that each muscle belly to digits III–V is interspecifically homologous. The digit II belly in the siamang and the distal belly to digit II in the western lowland gorilla, western chimpanzees, and Japanese macaques could be homologous based on their similar innervating patterns. The proximal belly was innervated by branches from the communicating nerve between median and ulnar nerves in the western lowland gorilla or branches from median and ulnar nerves in western chimpanzees. In the siamang and Japanese macaque, the whole FDS was innervated by median nerve. The signal intensities of CO2− radicals in teeth can be utilised as an individual indicator of the cumulative external dose for animals. To accurately determine the external dose, it is desirable to analyse the CO2− radical intensity and improve its detection limit. We recently reported a dose–response in the range of 0–200 mGy and estimated the absorbed dose for seven wild Japanese macaques captured in/around the related areas to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. Herein, for further improvement of this method, we examined the electron spin resonance spectra of the teeth of these seven and an additional four macaques captured in Fukushima by applying two spectrum-decomposition algorithms. Animals must make route choices every day when moving through their habitat while foraging. Choosing an optimal route can be cognitively costly, and primates and other animals have been shown to use simple heuristics, "rules of thumb", to make foraging route choices. We investigated the potential use of heuristics among foraging free-ranging Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) during solitary foraging trials. We also investigated the potential influence of individual variables (age and sex) and social variables (presence in the central group, presence of potential inter- and intraspecific competitors), on the use of heuristics, route length and trial time. We used a multi-destination foraging experiment with 6 platforms in a (4 m × 8 m) Z-array, completed by 29 Japanese macaques in 155 runs at the Awajishima Monkey Center in Japan. Our results showed that the macaques chose routes consistent with heuristics (e.g. nearest neighbour heuristic 19.4%, convex hull heuristic 4.5%) and selected optimal routes (shortest path in 23.9% of the trials). We also identified a potential new heuristic that was used most frequently, that we termed the "sweep heuristic" (27.1% of trials), which we interpreted as a strategy to deal with competitive foraging trade-offs – choosing routes to prioritize not leaving isolated food pieces behind. Age was significantly related to trial time; juvenile macaques were faster than adults and young adults, using speed to gain access to resources. Solitary trials with conspecifics present took significantly longer routes. Our results suggest that contextual factors led to variation in Japanese macaque decision-making, and we suggest that the preferential use of a sweep heuristic may have been a response to high intragroup competition. Pelvic morphology exhibits a particular sexual dimorphism in humans, which reflects obstetrical constraints due to the tight fit between neonates and mothers. Huseynov et al. [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 113, 5227–5232 (2016)] showed that in humans, pelvic sexual dimorphism is greatest around the age of highest fertility, and it becomes less marked in association with menopause in females. They proposed that this reflects changes of obstetrical versus locomotor functional demands in females. It remains unknown whether such developmental adjustment of the pelvic morphology is unique to humans. Macaques exhibit human-like cephalopelvic proportions, but they lack menopause and usually maintain fertility throughout adulthood. Here, we track pelvic development in Japanese macaques from neonate to advanced ages using computed tomography-based data. We show that female pelvic morphology changes throughout adult life, reaching the obstetrically most favorable shape at advanced ages rather than around primiparity. We hypothesize that pelvic morphology in Japanese macaques is developmentally adjusted to childbirth at advanced ages, where obstetrical risks are potentially higher than at younger ages. Our data contribute to the growing evidence that the female primate pelvis changes its morphology during the whole lifespan, possibly adjusting for changing functional demands during adulthood. Minerals provide micronutrients that function in various ways in the body, and they are necessary for the survival of animals. In this study, we first compared the mineral content of foods of wild Japanese macaques in lowland Yakushima with that of monkey chow used for many years to feed captive macaques and specifically formulated to obtain good health in captive macaques (National Research Council [NRC] recommendations). Second, we clarified the mineral balance in captive individuals when feeding them monkey chow to clarify the digestibility/bioavailability of the minerals. Third, we investigated the physiological response when we experimentally increased sodium intake. In the lowland of Yakushima, which is in the vicinity (<800 m) of the coast, animals, fungi, and mature leaves had high sodium contents compared with NRC recommendations. The calcium contents of mature leaves and animals were higher than the NRC recommendations. The overall mineral intake in this population was lower than that in the captive animals for calcium, phosphorus, sodium, and iron, while similar for magnesium and higher in potassium. Patterns in the intake and excretion of minerals indicated that excretion was mostly from urine and not from feces, and apparent digestibility was high for sodium. This tendency was opposite for calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus and intermediate for potassium. A sodium‐provisioning experiment showed that fecal aldosterone concentration remained low in both control and sodium‐provisioning conditions so the macaques do not need reabsorb sodium in the kidneys. Therefore, sodium content in the monkey chow, which is slightly lower than the NRC recommendation, seemed high enough so that the macaques could avoid the need to reabsorb sodium in the kidneys. We advocate similar studies for other primate populations or species to better understand the role of mineral concentrations on food selection and to identify potential mineral deficiencies. Glucocorticoids (GCs) are hormones released in response to stressors and can provide insight into an organism's physiological well‐being. Experiencing chronic challenges to homeostasis is associated with significant deviations from baseline fecal GCs (fGCs) in many species, providing a noninvasive biomarker for assessing stress. In the group of free‐ranging Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) at the Awajishima Monkey Center in Japan, ~17% have congenital limb malformations. We collected 646 fecal samples from 27 females over three consecutive birth seasons (May–August) and analyzed them using enzyme immunoassay to extract fGCs. We explored the relationship between fGC levels and individual (physical impairment and reproductive status), social (dominance rank and availability of kin for social support), and ecological variables (exposure to potential predators, rainfall, and wild fruit availability). A disabled infant was associated significantly with higher fGC in the mother; however, physical impairment in adult females was not significantly related to fGC levels. Females with higher dominance rank had significantly lower fGC levels than lower ranking females. Other factors did not relate significantly to fGC. These results suggest that providing care that meets the support needs of disabled infants poses a physiological challenge for mothers and suggests that physically impaired adults are able to effectively compensate for their disabilities with behavioral plasticity. Once an individual with congenital limb malformations survives infancy through their mother's care, physical impairment does not appear to influence fGC values, while social variables like dominance rank significantly influenced cortisol values in free‐ranging female Japanese macaques.
