We advance the understanding of inertial clustering and the role of sling events in high-Reynolds number (Re) particle-laden turbulence. To this end, we perform one-way coupled particle tracking in flow fields obtained from direct numerical simulations (DNS) of forced homogeneous isotropic turbulence. Additionally, we examine the impact of filtering utilized in large eddy simulations by applying a sharp spectral filter to the DNS fields. Our analysis reveals that while instantaneous clustering through the centrifuge mechanism explains clustering at early times, the path history effect—the sampling of fluid flow along particle trajectories—becomes important later on. The filtered fields expose small-scale fractal clustering that cannot be predicted by the instantaneous flow field. We show that there exists a filter-effective Stokes number that governs the degree of fractal clustering and preferential sampling, revealing scale-similarity in the spatial distributions and fractal dimensions. Sling events are prevalent throughout our simulations and impose prominent patterns on the particle fields. In pursuit of investigating the sling dynamics, we compute the relative velocity, averaged over proximal neighboring particles, to identify particles undergoing caustics. As postulated in recent theories, we find that in fully resolved, high-Re turbulence, sling events occur in thin sheets of high strain, situated between turbulent vortices. Understanding deformations and fluid flow in fractured rocks is of central importance for many subsurface flow applications. Thus, numerical frameworks are needed that capture the coupled mechanical and hydraulic behaviour, including scenarios with complex fracture networks. This paper employs the extended finite volume method to represent fracture manifolds in a poroelastic matrix domain and to compute shear and tensile displacements of fracture segments. However, using embedded fractures with non‐conforming grids can lead to severe convergence issues while computing shear slip and tensile opening of intersecting and parallel fractures, particularly if they have similar slopes. Our proposed solution of this problem is to slightly deform the fracture geometry by merging critical segments. We discuss and show examples of which attributes the merged segment has to adopt to ensure the correct slip behaviour at an intersection. Thereby it is crucial that the flow topology remains unaltered. Analysing failures of kinked fractures and fracture intersections show the flexibility of the devised algorithm. Moreover, it is demonstrated that deformation and opening patterns of a natural network with more than 200 fractures are qualitatively predicted very well. This study continues the exploration of temporal large-eddy simulation, particularly the extension of the temporal direct deconvolution method (TDDM) with a regularization term based on spatial dissipation. Furthermore, we aim to put insight stemming from previous work to test. Specifically, the hypothesis is that the temporal residual-stress leads to a reduction of the required artificial dissipation in under-resolved simulations. Moreover, this work seeks corroborate earlier discoveries with a posteriori results. We perform a numerical examination of two different spatial regularization terms in conjunction with TDDM: a spatial variant of selective frequency damping, functioning as a relaxation term that gradually drifts the velocity toward the filtered velocity, and the dynamic Smagorinsky model incorporating a prefactor. We test various cases, including the Taylor–Green vortex flow with a Reynolds number of Re = 3000, forced homogeneous isotropic turbulence with R e λ = 200 , turbulent channel flow at R e τ = 590 , and the flow over a periodic hill with Re = 10 935. Additionally, we also analyze the various dissipation contributions in TDDM as well as their interrelations. We also discuss grid artifacts and energy budget errors using these to compare the different models. Our results confirm the hypothesis that residual-stress dissipation reduces the necessary artificial dissipation. Because of the numerical ill-conditioning of deconvolution, whether temporal or spatial, there are practical limitations in the size of the filter width. Due to these limitations, the impact remains relatively minor. Leptomeningeal collaterals (LMCs) connect the main cerebral arteries and provide alternative pathways for blood flow during ischaemic stroke. This is beneficial for reducing infarct size and reperfusion success after treatment. However, a better understanding of how LMCs affect blood flow distribution is indispensable to improve therapeutic strategies. Here, we present a novel in silico approach that incorporates case-specific in vivo data into a computational model to simulate blood flow in large semi-realistic microvascular networks from two different mouse strains, characterised by having many and almost no LMCs between middle and anterior cerebral artery (MCA, ACA) territories. This framework is unique because our simulations are directly aligned with in vivo data. Moreover, it allows us to analyse perfusion characteristics quantitatively across all vessel types and for networks with no, few and many LMCs. We show that the occlusion of the MCA directly caused a redistribution of blood that was characterised by increased flow in LMCs. Interestingly, the improved perfusion of MCA-sided microvessels after dilating LMCs came at the cost of a reduced blood supply in other brain areas. This effect was enhanced in regions close to the watershed line and when the number of LMCs was increased. Additional dilations of surface and penetrating arteries after stroke improved perfusion across the entire vasculature and partially recovered flow in the obstructed region, especially in networks with many LMCs, which further underlines the role of LMCs during stroke. Among other factors, the outcome of stroke treatment is determined by the existence and extent of collateral flow paths, which sustain residual blood supply to the obstructed brain region. To improve therapeutic strategies and to reduce reperfusion injuries during treatment, an in-depth understanding of the role of collaterals for maintaining blood supply is indispensable. We performed numerical simulations to quantify how leptomeningeal collaterals impact blood flow redistribution in response to middle cerebral artery occlusion. Our studies have the unique feature that they are consistent with the topology of case-specific pial arterial networks from mouse brains and aligned with sparse in vivo blood flow measurements. This allows the valuable joint interpretation of numerical studies and in vivo experiments. We observed that maintaining perfusion to the obstructed region comes at the cost of reduced blood supply in other areas. Moreover, dilation of arterial vessels improved perfusion in the entire vasculature. Importantly, flow changes vary significantly across and even within vessel types, which underlines the benefits of numerical models with single vessel resolution. Taken together, our framework establishes a strong link between experimental and numerical studies necessary to advance our understanding of perfusion changes in response to stroke and after clot removal. Turbulent reactive flows laden with droplets appear in various energy systems but are difficult to understand and parametrize. Such flows involve interactions of turbulent fluctuations, phase changes, and chemical reactions that give rise to complex phenomena. To improve our knowledge, we performed direct numerical simulations of a canonical shear flow. It is composed of a hot, quiescent outer layer and a cold, turbulent inner layer that is laden with droplets. Due to the turbulent fluctuations, the droplets form clusters. Due to the high temperatures, the droplets evaporate quickly and flames emerge spontaneously at the interface of the two layers. We observed premixed flames that enclose droplet clusters and diffusion flames that enclose vapor pockets or single droplets. To examine these flame structures in more detail, we varied the droplet size, droplet loading, and shear rate. We found that the droplet size and droplet loading have significant effects, whereas the shear rate has only subtle effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
