Introduction Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the peripheral vestibular dysfunction that most affects people worldwide, but its etiopathogenesis is still not fully understood. Considering the etiological diversity, some studies highlight the association between BPPV and thyroid diseases. Objective To investigate the association between thyroid diseases and BPPV. Data Synthesis Systematic review and meta-analysis of epidemiological studies searched in the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases. Studies that were fully available and investigated the association between BPPV and thyroid diseases were selected. The articles that composed the meta-analysis were analyzed using the dichotomous model, the Mantel-Haenszel statistical test, odds ratio (OR), and a 95% confidence interval (CI). Of the 67 articles retrieved from the databases, 7 met the eligibility criteria of the systematic review, and 4 had data necessary to perform the meta-analysis. Qualitative analysis revealed that the studies were conducted in the European and Asian continents. The predominant methodological design was the case-control type, and thyroid dysfunctions, hypothyroidism, and Hashimoto thyroiditis occurred more frequently. The meta-analysis showed no association between hypothyroidism and BPPV; however, there was a statistically significant relationship between Hashimoto thyroiditis and BPPV. Conclusion The meta-analysis results suggest a possible association between BPPV and Hashimoto thyroiditis. Nevertheless, we emphasize the need for further studies to elucidate the evidence obtained. This study reviews current knowledge on the role that urban design plays in promoting nature connectedness and discusses the underexplored value of phygitalization for the reconnection of the urban population with nature. Promoting nature connectedness in the city matters, given that most human population lives in cities, and people who feel more connected with nature tend to draw more health benefits from it and are more supportive of nature conservation action. In this study, we analyze three distinct trends in discussions about the design of urban green space and its impact on nature connectedness among urban dwellers. Firstly, we highlight literature that is concerned with the relation between the spatial qualities of urban green space, namely its dimension, diversity, connectivity, and design style, and the intensity of nature contact among the urban population. Secondly, we review studies that draw attention to the impact of the sensory and affective qualities of urban nature sites in the perception and appreciation of natural biodiversity and the health benefits of nature, and the implications of such studies for urban design. Lastly, we draw attention to the growing number of experiments that apply extended reality and digital platforms to increase engagement with urban nature sites, and we discuss what this might mean in terms of promoting nature connectedness. Advances in biosensing technologies have led to the commercialization of novel lightweight wearable devices, which have been praised by urban scholars for offering the possibility to quantify emotions in real-world settings, something that had proven to be very challenging until now. Although many studies mix biosensing with qualitative methods to provide a clearer picture of what physiological data might mean in terms of emotions, there has been little exploration of how people interpret their own biodata. Following calls for greater attention to participation in biosensing studies, this article explores the nuances of the interpretation of biodata by research participants. Drawing on the findings of a study in which participants were invited to reflect on and discuss their own biodata during and after a walk in a high street in Lisbon, we show how exposing participants to biodata creates moments of bounded interference that foster in-depth reflection about the urban experience. With this in mind, we discuss how bounded interference can be a generative driver for more detailed discussions about spatial experiences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Last chance tourism, which can be described as the practice of tourism in environmentally damaged or threatened spaces, is an emerging trend that has been considered problematic due to the pressure that it places on already fragile environments. This article explores the possibilities of turning last chance tourism experiences into hopeful tourism experiences, by creating emotionally driven last chance tourism experiences in controlled and safe environments through digital storytelling. We draw on literature on transformative, hopeful and flourishing tourism to argue that last chance experiences provide unique opportunities for eliciting reflection among tourists and promote a greater environmental awareness if they are driven by emotionally engaging narratives. Our study explores the outcomes of an experiment conducted at the Ajuda Botanical Garden (Lisbon, Portugal) with a futuristic mixed-reality game that places users as members of a scientific expedition looking for plants that have become extinct in the twenty-second century. The results of this study show how the game's last chance narrative generated contradictory, mixed feelings among the participants, which ultimately led to hopeful existential reflection about nature conservation action. This crossover study aimed to compare the anesthetic effects of buffered 2% articaine with 1:200,000 epinephrine with that of non-buffered 4% articaine with 1:200,000 epinephrine. Forty-seven volunteers were administered two doses of anesthesia in the buccal region of the second mandibular molars in two sessions using 1.8 mL of different local anesthetic solutions. The onset time and duration of pulp anesthesia, soft tissue pressure pain threshold, and the score of pain on puncture and burning during injection were evaluated. The operator, volunteers, and statistician were blinded. There were no significant differences in the parameters: onset of soft tissue anesthesia (p = 0.80), duration of soft tissue anesthesia (p = 0.10), onset of pulpal anesthesia in the second (p = 0.28) and first molars (p = 0.45), duration of pulp anesthesia of the second (p = 0.60) and first molars (p = 0.30), pain during puncture (p = 0.82) and injection (p = 0.80). No significant adverse events were observed. Buffered 2% articaine with 1:200,000 epinephrine did not differ from non-buffered 4% articaine with 1:200,000 epinephrine considering anesthetic success, safety, onset, duration of anesthesia, and pain on injection. Background: Intestinal mucositis is one of the most common and important side effects of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). Currently, there are still no specific and effective protocols for its prevention and treatment. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of oral administration of Lacticaseibacillus casei (L. casei) on the progression of 5-FU-induced intestinal mucositis. Methods: L. casei (1x109 CFU/ml) or saline was orally administered to Swiss mice, beginning 15 days before intestinal mucositis induction by single intraperitoneal 5-FU administration (450 mg/kg). Body weight, number of peripheral leukocytes and fecal lactic acid bacteria were monitored. After euthanasia, on day 18, tissue samples from colon and each small intestine segment were collected for histopathology. Jejunal tissues were collected and evaluated for iNOS and TNF-alpha immunoexpression, IL-1-beta, IL-6 and TNF-alpha levels, malonaldehyde (MDA) accumulation, invertase activity and factor nuclear kappa B (NFkB-P65) gene expression, toll like receptor-4 (TLR-4), mucin-2 (MUC-2), occludin and zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1). Results: The positive impact of L. casei on 5-FU-induced leukopenia was observed, but not on 5-FU-induced weight loss in mice. L. casei reduced 5-FU-induced inflammation in the colon and small intestine (p<0.05). Decreased TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 (p<0.05) and MDA (p<0.05) levels, as well as decreased iNOS and TNF-alpha protein expressions (p<0.05) were found in the jejunum from L casei group. In addition, L-casei down-regulated NFKB-P65 (p<0.05) and TLR-4 (p<0.05) gene expressions and up-regulated MUC-2 and mucosal barrier proteins occludin and ZO-1 gene expressions (p<0.05). Furthermore, greater lactic acid bacteria population (p<0.05) was found in the L. casei group when compared to control groups. Conclusion: Oral L. casei administration can protect the intestine of Swiss mice from 5-FU-induced intestinal mucositis, thus contributing to overall health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a geoethnographic study of street football games in Lisbon's Metropolitan Area. The study explores how soundmaking is used by young people to generate micro-worlds and territories in street football games in urban space. The insights of the study contribute toward the field of sonic geographies by demonstrating that directing our focus away from the act of listening can provide novel insights into the role that sound plays in making space and connecting subjects. We present four related arguments to sustain this claim. First, we argue that human soundmaking must be understood as a whole, including the making of lexical and non-lexical, representational and non-representational sounds. Secondly, we argue that human soundmaking is closely related to listening, even if this relationship surpasses consciousness, but it is by no means a mere consequence of listening. Third, we show that human soundmaking is interwoven with everyday acts of worldmaking. Lastly, we posit that by taking part in everyday worldmaking, soundmaking also plays a significant role in the production of everyday urban territories. This article discusses the enactment of conflicting time regimes in contemporary urban retail and consumer services. We draw on the theories of time–space compression, social acceleration, and the fast–slow dichotomy to argue that retail and consumer services act on urban life by enacting two apparently conflicting time regimes: fast time and slow time. Although retail and consumer services are not able to establish urban time regimes by themselves, they enact time regimes in their stores by offering the temporal resources that consumers need to perform their preferred timestyles. These temporal resources stem from the store's concepts, sales model and management strategies, and ambiances. We draw on our ongoing field research in Colinas do Cruzeiro, an upper middle-class suburban neighborhood in greater Lisbon, Portugal, which has included field surveys, nonparticipant observation, and semistructured interviews. Our findings identify three time regimes that retail and consumer services in Colinas do Cruzeiro enact in their stores. This finding allows us to understand the processes through which retail, consumer services, and urban rhythms tend to synchronize. This paper draws on a year‐long ethnographic observation of the tourism‐related practices of atmospheric production in Lisbon (Portugal) and the protests against its unintended consequences. We expand the literature on atmospheric design, staging, and performance by introducing the concept of collateral atmospheres to describe the "other" atmospheres that emerge in the spaces and times beyond produced atmospheres. Among the plethora of studies on urban atmospheres, literature on atmospheric production has been almost exclusively focused on the inner spacetimes of produced atmospheres and has not explored what may happen at their spatial and temporal borders, despite the wide acknowledgement of the volatility of atmospheres. This paper draws on a year‐long ethnographic observation of the tourism‐related practices of atmospheric production in Lisbon (Portugal) and the protests against its unintended consequences. We expand the literature on atmospheric design, staging, and performance by introducing the concept of collateral atmospheres to describe the "other" atmospheres that emerge in the spaces and times beyond produced atmospheres. We show that the elements of produced atmospheres transform over space or time into collateral atmospheres, generating negative affective states that have an impact on neighbourhood relationships, personal and familiar well‐being, and local identity. In this sense we argue that the production of atmospheres has a territorial dimension which has been neglected by the literature and must be accounted for in future research. This article provides the first overview of the dialogues between Brazilian and Portuguese geography throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. We expand current debates about marginal geographies in the growing field of global histories of geography by arguing that the Luso-Brazilian case reveals how international epistemic communities can be formed between semiperipheral geographic communities. We call attention to the role that science funding plays in the making of epistemic communities in semiperipheral spaces where political instability prevails, by allowing the creation of platforms of dialogue between geographic academies, such as international conferences, scientific journals, and research projects. The objective of this paper is to explore how different artistic practices work to alter the distribution of the senses, and consequently, the disposition, processes and practices of the situated surplus of urban places. While it has been acknowledged that artistic performances in public space generate specific appropriations of the urban environment, the role that specific sensorial channels play in these events is still underexplored. Drawing upon fieldwork conducted between 2012 and 2016 in Chiado, our study highlights how dance, music and architecture stimulate, invoke and highlight specific senses while rendering others unnoticed. This causes shifts in bodily rhythms, mood and attention to details in urban space. As certain corporeal isles are enacted through contemplation, the experience and appropriation of urban space is subject to change. The objective of this study is to understand the phenomenology of moments of transition between sonic environments in the urban context and conceptualize the role they play in the attunement of the body to urban spaces. It has been argued that transitions between different environments tend to be moments when sonic perception and feedback are enhanced and, as moments of interruption, they play a significant role in how we attune to urban places. Our study contributes to a greater understanding of these moments. We present the concept of sonic first impression to address the affective nuances of these moments, and the concept of sonic attunement to address how individuals tune in to urban places through sound. In order to explore how these concepts apply in practice, we have undertaken a participatory methodology with 12 volunteers, which included sound diaries and go-alongs. These methods allowed us to gather in-depth data about spatial and temporal transitions and issues related to the angle of arrival of the body. Our results unveil the role that sound plays in attunement to place, a role that encompasses both meaning and affect, active and passive hearing, consciousness and unconsciousness, mind and body, psychology and physiology. Abstract: This article poses a straightforward question: What has geography been listening to? Sonic geographies have been established as a relevant subfield in Human Geography in the last decades. During this period, a significant amount of work has been published, but there are still few reviews of these works, and most of them focus solely on Anglophone geography. In this article, I attempt to address this gap by providing an overview of the themes and concepts that have been studied within the emerging subfield of sonic geographies. My intention is to reunite a large range of works that are becoming increasingly scattered and specialized, in order to make sense of the subfield as a whole. With this in mind, I am particularly interested in identifying the “deaf spots” of the subfield, that is, the subjects, concepts, or fields that have not yet been explored thoroughly by sonic geographies. The objective of this article is to approach the different conceptions of sound - and its relations to the underlying scientific paradigms - that emerged throughout the history of geography. There has been a growing interest among geographers in understanding the spatialities of sound, and geographies of sound have become an emerging subfield of the discipline. For this reason, it is the right time to address how the discipline has approached sound throughout its history. Several theoretical perspectives influenced geography in the twentieth century, changing its methodologies and how its subjects were conceived. Sound, like other subjects, has been conceived very differently by geographers of competing paradigms. Concepts such as noise, soundscape, or sound as affect, among others, have dominated geographies of sound at specific periods. Due to the marginality of the subject in the discipline, assessments of these conceptual shifts are rare. I tackle this issue in this article as I provide a first attempt of writing a history of sound in geography. The article reviews debates regarding the name of the subfield, and the conceptions of sound in the successive and competing scientific paradigms in geography. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Following a previous text on the main theoretical contributions of non-representational theories in Geography, the objective of this review article is to discuss the methodological implications of this new theoretical perspective and the methods that have been reinvented to reach its goals. The article is divided as follows. First, I will present the concept of thought in action, which fundaments non-representational methodologies. Afterwards, I will present the main innovation and experiments method-wise. I will conclude with a discussion on the main contributions of non-representational theories for contemporary Cultural Geography, as well as the main criticism that has been made. At a moment when new retail formats are emerging and consumers are changing their preferences, it is vital to reflect on the existing shopping malls, which are being challenged in European cities. With their vitality endangered, many become dead malls, a phenomenon that has increased over recent years. With this in mind, the objective of this study is to explain the factors behind the proliferation of dead malls through an empirical analysis of the evolution of shopping malls in Greater Lisbon, Portugal. We combine three sets of retail change theories (cyclic, conflict and environmental) with current perspectives on the resilience of urban retail. We expect that our study will contribute toward current debates on the resilience of shopping malls. The methodology of our study comprises two stages. First, we updated the Greater Lisbon shopping mall database and analysed the growth and decline of each shopping mall type over the last 44 years. In a second phase, we conducted a fieldwork survey on 150 shopping malls, which allowed us to identify and profile the dead malls of Greater Lisbon. Our results show that dead malls match declining shopping mall types, and we discuss four factors affecting the resilience of shopping malls. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, the phenomenon of social acceleration, which has profound impacts on everyday life, has attracted some attention from social scientists. At the same time, an increased engagement with social practices that are related to slowing down has also been highlighted, thereby unveiling an inherent tension between fast and slow times in contemporary societies. However, little attention has been paid to how fast and slow times are spatially dispersed and rooted.This study contributes to current discussions on the pace of life by considering the dynamics of speeding up and slowing down in the everyday life of residents in a neighborhood of an edge city and the role played by local resources in the performance of everyday life practices. We undertook our study in the Colinas do Cruzeiro neighborhood, in the municipality of Odivelas in the North of Lisbon’s metropolitan area, where we conducted 21 in-depth narrative interviews with residents with the purpose of understanding the spatiotemporal organization of their daily lives and the role of the neighborhood’s resources.Our results identify four different timestyles among the interviewees, all of them fluctuating between fast and slow temporalities in different ways. Thereafter, we identify and describe the main practices of speeding up and slowing down in the interviewees’ everyday life and the local resources, which are mobilized in Colinas do Cruzeiro in order to perform these practices. We give some conclusions after a brief discussion of the results. Our main argument is that local resources play a vital role in an individual’s ability to speed up or slow down and therefore more attention must be paid as to how local resources can become temporal advantages. This article discusses the impact of urban change in everyday life rhythms. Recently, urban space has been described and analyzed as polyrhythmic, being a congregation of diverse movements by different agents. While the role of materiality in this dynamic is recognized, the impact of urban change in everyday life rhythms is still underexplored. Seeing urban rhythms as comprised by affective relationships, I analyze how Lisbon’s recent macro-level spatial planning has affected the local everyday life rhythms of elders in Ameixoeira, a peripheral parish of the city. The article presents findings from 20 in-depth narrative interviews with elders who had lived for at least 40 years in the parish, with the purpose of understanding how urban change has affected their daily rhythms, which are stabilized by the resources of urban space. My conclusions identify a set of affective dimensions in which urban change has impacted the daily life rhythms of local elders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to show how material gathering and elicitation can induce metacognition and metaemotions in interviewees and its usefulness for the study of affective phenomena. Design/methodology/approach – The author will draw on the exploratory study on sound affects conducted with five individuals in Lisbon’s metropolitan area in order to discuss these aspects. After presenting the methodology, the author will address the concepts of metacognition and metaemotion. Afterwards, the author will explain how these occur during the gathering of data by ordinary people and the use of elicitation of materials during interviews. Findings – Metacognitive and metaemotional experiences can be triggered through material gathering and their elicitation during interviews with the purpose of identifying aspects of the everyday experience that are usually unnoticed. Furthermore, they are instrumental to obtain empirical data that illustrates subjects in their everyday lives as simultaneously affective-reactive and reflexive, meaning-making individuals. Originality/value – The interview has often been disregarded as a method for interpreting affective phenomena. However, the author argue that this method remains very useful to address the distinct interpretations that subjects make of themselves and their emplaced experiences, by calling for attention to the role of metacognition and metaemotions, an instrumental yet unrecognized tool for interpreting affective phenomena. Virtual spaces have emerged as everyday life spaces in contemporary societies. Very quickly, they have gained a cultural role in the daily life of their users, as these new territories gain their own communities, ideologies, and spatializations. However, little is known about how place is experienced in these different realms. This study seeks to understand place experience in virtual spaces, taking the sim racing virtual spaces as a case study and endeavoring to build a bridge between theory and empirics. This study uses ethnographic methods, which included a year-long participant observation period and a set of 20 in-depth interviews with users, in order to understand their narratives of the virtual geographies of two sim racing videogames: Gran Turismo and rFactor. The results of the study show that spirit of place, place ballets, and sense of place exist just as well among users of virtual spaces—despite the particularities of these new territories and their remaining tensions. The objective of this study is to identify in the television advertisements of coalitions with best results in the polls in the 2006 presidential elections, in the first round, the elements that tell us who is the subject, in the view of political actors (party/ candidate), to whom the speeches are addressed. It proposes a guided reflection on the theme in question: to what extent does the "construction" of the image of the voter approach the advertisements image of a citizen voter? The work researches advertisements of the coalitions A Força do Povo (PT/PRB/PCdoB), Por um Brasil Decente (PSDB/PFL) and Frente de Esquerda (PSOL/PSTU/PCB)

Discarded feathers represent an important residue from the poultry industry and are a rich source of keratin. Bacillus subtilis LFB-FIOCRUZ 1266, previously isolated from industrial poultry wastes, was used in this work and, through random mutation using ethyl methanesulfonate, ten strains were selected based on the size of their degradation halos. The feather degradation was increased to 115% and all selected mutants showed 1.4- to 2.4-fold increase in keratinolytic activity compared to their wild-type counterparts. The protein concentrations in the culture supernatants increased approximately 2.5 times, as a result of feather degradation. The mutants produced more sulfide than the wild-type bacteria that produced 0.45 µg/ml, while mutant D8 produced 1.45 µg/ml. The best pH for enzyme production and feather degradation was pH 8. Zymography showed differences in the intensity and molecular mass of some bands. The peptidase activity of the enzyme blend was predominantly inhibited by PMSF and EDTA, suggesting the presence of serine peptidases. HPTLC analysis evidenced few differences in band intensities of the amino acid profiles produced by the mutant peptidase activities. The mutants showed an increase in keratinolytic and peptidase activities, demonstrating their biotechnological potential to recycle feather and help to reduce the environmental impact. Abstract: This paper describes the antiviral evaluation of new N-amino-1,2,3-triazole derivatives, 1-(substituted-phenylamino)-5-methyl-1H-[1,2,3]-triazole-4-carboxylic acid ethyl esters, 3 and 1-(4-substituted-phenylamino)-5-methyl-1H-[1,2,3]-triazole-4-carboxylic acid hydrazides, 4, on Cantagalo virus replication. 1-(4-Fluoro-phenylamino)-5-methyl-1H-[1,2,3]-triazole-4-carboxylic acid hydrazide, 4e, exhibited a significant antiviral effect. Characterization of all compounds was confirmed by IR, 1H and 13C spectroscopies and elemental analysis. In addition, molecular structure of 4e was also reported. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
