This article explores the trajectories of young Paraguayan families living in peripheral neighborhoods of Greater Buenos Aires, exploring their relationship with labor markets and with the city they live in. Thus, the object of study is constituted by migrants and by those who were born in Argentina but live in transnational households. A collaborative ethnography was carried out involving participant observation and interviews with young people and their families, peer groups, and community organizations. The results demonstrate that they are young people from lower classes and that they face exclusion from the labor market in segregated socio-urban spaces. Although the results make visible the particularities of these youth transitions, intersectional inequalities are evident regarding experiences of gender, ethnicity, race, and class, linked to the migratory conditions of their families. In conclusion, their insertion in precarious jobs associated with migrant labor niches generates identity in urban spaces and reproduces class inequalities among families. In turn, although the transitions of young women reflect greater inequalities due to gender and class stereotypes, they also show that through community care work they dispute their right to the city from a feminist perspective. YOUNG adults , *LABOR market , *MARKET design & structure (Economics) , *PRECARITY , *YOUNG consumers - Abstract
Labor precarity is a multidimensional phenomenon that severely affects youth in Latin America. Based on household survey data from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico from 2023, this article analyzes four dimensions of precarity: instability, lack of social protection, insufficient income, and underemployment. The results revealed that the salaried youth in Mexico and Argentina have the most precarious conditions, whereas Brazil showed the lowest levels of precarity. Precarity is most prevalent in Mexico, followed by Colombia and Argentina. In each of these countries, young women were the most affected, and there was an association between labor precarity, sociodemographic characteristics, and labor market structures. The youngest and those with lower levels of education are those who experience worse conditions. By sector of activity, in Mexico more problems are reported in the primary sector, whereas in Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia they occur in personal services. Young women, regardless of their level of education and sector of activity, report higher levels of precariousness, which aggravates gender inequality. The conclusions propose actions to promote the inclusion of young people in formal employment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SELF-deception , *AFFECTIVE disorders , *AFFECT (Psychology) , *EMOTIONS , *AGE - Abstract
Background: Emotional dependence (ED) is a chronic pattern of frustrated affective needs that include mood disorders and self-deception mechanisms. The main objective of the present study was to analyze the relationship between emotional dependence, self-deception, and negative feelings. Method: 255 participants aged between 18 and 65 years (M = 29.73; SD = 9.505) who have or had a relationship in the last three months participated. Results: 25.5% of participants showed intense emotional dependence. The existence of a positive bidirectional relationship between emotional dependence on self-deception and negative feelings was confirmed, with self-deception predicting its presence in 57.2%. The existence of ED in the person seems not determined by sex, contrary to what happens with age, being the youngest (18 to 23 years) those who present more emotional dependence. Discussion: The present study provides evidence of the relationship between the examined variables and their influence on couple relationships. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

EQUALITY , *RACE , *NINETEENTH century , *TWENTIETH century , *SOCIAL change - Abstract
Past social changes and constants in 20th-century Brazil are re-examined in an approach that contrasts Industrialization Theory and Structural-Functionalism. The 20th century is symbolic not only because it witnessed a series of social changes but also because it was not marked by revolutions in the Western part of the planet, in contrast to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It was further characterized by the persistence of social inequalities established in previous centuries. The twentieth century confirmed the hegemony of male Eurocentrism in the West, to the detriment of other marginalized identities, in a configuration that simplifies or complicates life for individuals based on the status markers of race and gender. This article aims to assess the degree of social permeability through a historical evaluation of interracial marriage. The challenge of transforming Brazil's structural form, which often reverts to past patterns in different situational contexts, remains dense and complex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Basic Vocational Training was initially implemented in an attempt to reduce the high rates of early school leaving in Spain, as compared to other European countries. Data analysis reveals that only a minority of girls further their education through basic vocational training and those that do tend to be concentrated in a small number of professional specialties. Using qualitative methodology, this study examined the perceptions of girls enrolled in Basic Vocational Training courses in Valencian schools regarding their academic evolution. It was concluded that the disengagement processes experienced by these girls enrolled in vocational training are mainly due to a distancing from a position of emphasized femininity or conformity to patriarchy. It was found that Basic Vocational Training is a mechanism that minimizes this separation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GROUP identity , *SOCIAL role , *MALE employees , *WORK environment , *SEMI-structured interviews , *MASCULINITY - Abstract
The objective of this work is to analyze, from a feminist perspective, the formation of the social and subjective gender imaginary of working men in the extractive corporation Compañía Minera Cuzcatlán, in the municipality of San José del Progreso, Valles Centrales region, in the state of Oaxaca. Through semi-structured interviews, the findings show that being a man is closely linked to economic provision and protection of the family. Both of these are combined as a mandate that sustains masculine subjectivity and the social imaginary of gender, as well as the assigned identity and social role. Likewise, mining work is associated with the strength and endurance that the male body supposedly harbors in this work environment, whose conditions are adverse. The strength and resistance of men's bodies distinguishes the work they do compared to women, even when the technology used does not demand the work traditionally performed by miners; this assumption prevails even in men who perform administrative tasks and in areas other than where the mineral is extracted. What this idea produces is a reinforcement and hierarchy between genders in current mining. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Judith Butler’s influential writing on psychoanalytic, semiotic, linguistic and material-embodied gender performativity inspired a generation of geographers to advance critical understanding of labour and spaces of work. This paper adds to that progress by engaging with subsequent feminist, post-structuralist, materialist, and more-than-representational thinking that remains under-developed terrain for geographical studies of everyday work life. We offer ethnographic insights into on-site experiences of female building workers in China – career paths, labour practices, intimate spousal relations – evidence of (in)actions, trajectories, absences/presences, visual, vocal, linguistic, embodied, emotional, affective, material and (non)human registers of performative force. Overall, we explore more-and-less reflexive emerging, (re)surfacing, unfolding moments of meaningful, incongruent, incomplete, and contradictory ‘being’, ‘becoming’ and subjectivities ‘in-the-making’ that constitute female building workers’
un doing manual labour. Concluding, we offer theoretical, methodological and empirical reflections and signpost new research directions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

In this paper, we contribute to geographic scholarship on masculinities through an examination of the interweaving of gender and disability in the shifting social geographies of men who live with chronic physical illness. Using an in-depth qualitative and visual arts methodology with men who live with MS and Fibromyalgia, we consider how their changing physical and cognitive capacities can make it difficult to approximate an able-bodied masculinity. Our analysis highlights two key themes. First, the diverse physical and cognitive impacts of chronic illness pose problems for masculine embodiment in different ways in different places. Problems are perhaps most acute in the context of the workplace but also impact gendered domestic geographies. Second, gendered relations of care and support are transformed by experiences of chronic illness. On the one hand, men are increasingly dependent on others for support. This places new demands on existing relationships that impact the doing of gender. On the other hand, changes wrought by chronic illness involve some men more actively in the provision of care. We examine what this means for the re-gendering of care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main objective of this study is to examine the relative influence of candidate competencies vs. rater biases on hiring recommendations made using asynchronous video interview (AVI) tools, while considering a candidate's gender and qualifications. A 2 × 2 within-subject design was employed with 151 HR professionals in Spain to explore the effects of candidate gender (female vs. male) and qualifications (highly qualified vs. semi-qualified) on hiring recommendations. Binary logistic regression and qualitative analyses revealed that although competencies play a strong role biases were the dominant factor influencing hiring recommendations for all candidates. For women, competence was a key predictor. Sociability predicted hiring recommendation of semi-qualified candidates, particularly men, for whom morality also played an important role. First impressions favoured highly qualified women, while nonverbal communication favoured highly qualified men. Consistent with role congruity theory, communal competencies were more valued in women, while agentic competencies were crucial for men. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NATURAL history , *MEDICAL sciences , *RESEARCH personnel , *SOCIAL groups , *SOCIAL role - Abstract
Based on the pioneering experience of three researchers from the Oswaldo Cruz Institute, who joined the institution in the early 1960s, we analyzed the impact of their trajectories on the formation of new generations of women, from the midtwentieth century to the present day. The objective was to trace the intellectual genealogy of Monika Barth, Anna Kohn and Delir Corrêa Gomes in order to complexify, through a gender lens, our understanding of the conformation of biomedical sciences in Brazil. The investigation uses the search tools offered by the Acacia and Lattes/CNPq Platforms, along with the crossing of archival and oral sources, combining quantitative and qualitative analysis. The "matriarchs" of this genealogy are inserted in a historical context in which new agents enter a changing scenario, characterized by the expansion of female social roles and the deepening of scientific institutionalization in our country. With degrees in Natural History, they worked on emerging themes and techniques and contributed to the professional qualification of four generations of scientists to the present day, forming a mostly female and multidisciplinary descendant. It concludes with the perception of the active and fundamental participation of women, still little visible in our historiography, in the process of construction, expansion and institutional reproduction of Brazilian science in different specialties, in the past and in the present. Finally, it raises questions, to be deepened, about the asymmetries and intersectionalities that cross the professional relations between different social groups in different temporalities. - Abstract
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Menstruation has traditionally been approached through concepts and frameworks from the natural sciences. However, like other themes that intersect body and gender, feminist perspectives within the humanities have increasingly taken menstruation as a subject of research and critical analysis. This article presents a bibliographic review of how menstruation has been approached within Brazilian academic productions, particularly those linked theoretically and/or methodologically to the humanities. The review includes 66 works, encompassing articles, undergraduate theses, MSc dissertations, and PhD theses published in Brazil. Our findings show a notable growth in interest, with 29% of these scholarly contributions appearing between 2020 and 2023, signaling an expanding field of study. The research is organized into five thematic axes: theoretical reviews and analyses, symbolic and interpretive studies, education and art, technoscience and menstrual products, and knowledge related to body care. This literature review proposes a systematic mapping of the diverse and innovative ways menstruation has become a consolidated topic within the humanities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyzes period poverty based on interviews with six girls living in a region on the outskirts of the city of Porto Alegre (Brazil). The results of the qualitative study reveal some realities that are behind the numbers. The lack of information about menstrual health, menstrual cycles, and the limited self-awareness about the body became evident. All the interviewed adolescents who sought health services due to any menstrual or body-related issues during puberty received a racist, sexist, or ageist treatment or a combination of these prejudices. Their accounts regarding access to menstrual hygiene products and sanitation infrastructure do not fully correspond to the data on period poverty: the girls have access to disposable sanitary pads during menstruation, clean water, and bathrooms in usable conditions. The stories told by the teenagers expand the discussion about period poverty as they highlight cultural factors related to their menstrual experiences. Their accounts also show that initiatives and public policies to combat menstrual precariousness cannot be limited to the material field and point to the need for systemic cultural changes to combat racism, sexism, and ageism. The present study assesses the relevance of microfinance institutions (MFIs) in the effect of financial access on gender economic inclusion in 44 countries in sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA) for the period 2004–2018. The adopted empirical strategy is interactive quantile regressions that are tailored to account for both simultaneity and unobserved heterogeneity. Two MFI dynamics are employed: MFIs per 1,000 km2 and MFIs per 100,000 adults. Financial access is measured in terms of female bank account ownership while gender inclusion is measured in terms of reducing female unemployment. We find that MFIs per 1,000 km2 must reach thresholds of between 2.328 and 2.490 at the 90th quantile of the female unemployment distribution in order for female bank account ownership to reduce female unemployment. The partial validity of the tested hypothesis is clarified and we note a few policy implications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite a greater percentage of women in the healthcare workforce, women are underrepresented in leadership positions. Researchers have examined the influence of gender on women involvement in policy‐making and leadership in male‐dominated professions. However, no research has explored nurses' perspectives about the role of gender in impacting their involvement in health policymaking in female‐dominant profession. This study explores nurse leaders' perspectives on how gender can influence their involvement in health policymaking in Pakistan. Eleven nurse leaders with at least 1 year of experience in policymaking participated in semi‐structured interviews. The data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Four themes emerged: Patriarchy Permeates Health Policymaking; Women's Social Status and Nurses' Involvement in Policymaking; Intentionally Disregarding Nurses' Insights on Policy Forums; Condescending Attitudes Towards Women Nurses on Policy Forums. The underrepresentation of nurses in health policymaking is influenced by gender and social biases and stereotypes against women and the negative social image of the nursing profession. Health‐care organizations must play an active role and develop policies to combat gender‐based discrimination and curb the underrepresentation of nurses in healthcare policymaking. Key Points: Nurse leaders perceived that nurses' involvement in health policymaking is affected by social perception of gendered roles and leadership traits.Power imbalance and discrimination against women is a significant driver of lower participation and involvement of nurses in health policymaking.Nurse leaders reported that despite participating in the policy forums, they were often the "silent partners." In Vilcún, Chile, on the evening of September 21, 1942, Francisca Cayupi Marín confronted and publicly stabbed Alberto Moraga Bello for leaving her and marrying someone else. Employing a microhistorical approach and based on the study of this legal case file, this research proposes, on one hand, the analysis of the use of violence as female agency in the face of conflicts in couples; and on the other hand, the analysis of emotions in the construction of a narrative of female defense in judicial testimonies, understood as a performative act and the display of negotiating abilities in response to decisions by judges and justice agents, within a regional and border space. Conservation faces a chronic shortage of resources, including time, funding, mental capacity, and human capital. Efforts to make the expenditure of these resources more efficient should, therefore, support more equitable and effective conservation prioritization. To achieve this, it is necessary to ensure the integration of the knowledge and perceptions of local stakeholders into larger scale conservation decisions. We used fuzzy cognitive mental modeling to assess the perceptions of mangroves and the prioritization of ecosystem services across 3 groups of stakeholders: representatives from 3 coastal Fijian villages, the national office of an international nongovernmental organization (NGO), and the US office of that same NGO. We found different topologies and valuations among the resultant mental models, with the US NGO office having the most terms. However, when comparing models from local villages with the US NGO office, scale‐dependent perceptions shifted, including the relative devaluation of locally important cultural valuations of mangroves. Despite these variations in perceptions, however, 3 key components of the mental models—women's livelihoods, men's livelihoods, and fisheries supplementation—all appeared as consistently important in multiple models, suggesting areas around which potential collaboration among stakeholders could be forged. By focusing on system‐wide, rather than stakeholder‐specific, optimal solutions within the system, new opportunities for collaboration may emerge. In doing so, these system‐wide solutions may increase efficiency and collaboration. Moreover, we found that boundary‐spanning organizations, such as the national‐level conservation organizations, played a role in facilitating information transfer and mediating conservation goals in a culturally appropriate fashion. Finally, although the specific example used here is mangrove conservation, our methodologies and findings are broadly applicable across a variety of conservation scenarios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AFFIRMATIVE action programs in education , *REGRESSION discontinuity design , *EDUCATORS , *VOCATIONAL guidance , *PUBLIC universities & colleges - Abstract
This study analyzes whether beneficiaries of an Affirmative Action (AA) bonus at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) are, after graduation, entering the labor market in occupations aligned with their qualifications or if they are experiencing overeducation - having more schooling than required for the exercise of the professional activity. To this end, administrative data on admissions to UFRN were cross-referenced with information on formal workers registered in Brazil, available in the Annual Social Information Report (RAIS). The Regression Discontinuity Design (RDD) method was used as an identification strategy. Among the main results, it is noteworthy that women admitted through AA to UFRN have a higher probability of completing the program. In contrast, men in the same situation are more likely to experience overeducation, indicating a greater mismatch between their education level and professional occupation, highlighting gender discrepancies in the effects. The conclusions suggest the need for additional policies and programs that promote academic and career guidance and encourage cooperation between universities and the job market, facilitating the transition into roles that match graduate's education level. SEXUALLY transmitted diseases , *MEN'S attitudes , *SEX (Biology) , *SEXUAL freedom , *WOMEN'S attitudes - Abstract
Women’s and men’s health shows biological sex differences, but there are also gender-related differences due to socio-cultural circumstances. Thus, there is a relationship between the social construction of gender and the behaviours and attitudes of men and women towards health, sexuality and reproduction (Moreno y Carrillo 2016; Ruiz Cantero 2019). With the incorporation of the gender perspective the persistence and prevalence of certain sexist ideologies related to women’s bodies 9and sexual freedom has been shown. Probably one of the topics that best reflects these ideological patterns is Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI). The aim of this study is to analyse the cognitive basis of the terminology used in the field of STIs and to show its discursive representation in the media. To do this, we have created an ad hoc textual corpus from magazines and sexual health blogs in which we will check whether the articles address the most frequent STIs from a gender perspective. The results show that the terms themselves are not ideologically loaded, nor are their uses in the discourse, as the magazines show gender sensitivity in their treatment of STIs. Aging presents a key challenge, and the care sector is an emergent and strategic field, with considerable potential for job creation in response to rapidly growing social demands. As this sector expands, it necessitates a change in the model, which must be supported by community services. Here, the social economy has an opportunity for development. Traditionally, jobs in the care sector have typically involved outsourcing family care and have been characterized by low social value, job insecurity, and limited career prospects, which reduces the sector's attractiveness. In Asturias, the sector comprises highly feminized companies, where women confront both the constraints inherent in the sector, including its location in rural areas, and the typical gender disparities. The purpose of this study is to examine the position of social economy firms and entities in Asturias that offer care-related services from a global perspective enhanced by a gender viewpoint. To do this, a mixed, quantitative methodology is used, which characterizes the participation of Social Economy's companies in the services sector in the region, and a qualitative analysis through in-depth interviews and discussion groups were conducted with associations representing both care demand and supply, as well as experts in social services and innovation. The analysis results indicate that women play a crucial role in transitioning to the community model, and promoting actions is necessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DATABASES , *INCOME , *COOPERATIVE societies , *DEBT , *GENDER - Abstract
Currently, there is still a great inequality between the number of companies managed by women and men. There are numerous barriers for women to be able to opt for management positions and it is necessary to make these obstacles visible. However, cooperatives, because of their values and principles, although they are no strangers to this situation, do make some differences. The aim of this paper is to analyse whether gender in the management of cooperatives influences their economic-financial results. For this purpose, a sample of 240 Valencian cooperatives active during the period 2008-2021 was taken, 191 led by men and 49 led by women, available in the SABI database, studying whether there are significant differences in the number of employees, income, results, solvency and indebtedness between the two groups. In general, there are no significant differences in the results obtained in cooperatives managed by women and men, although there are differences in the size and type of activity carried out by both groups in their enterprises. The results show that, although the cooperatives are not unrelated to the lower percentage of cooperatives managed by women than by men with respect to other types of companies, they do show a lower influence of gender on the results, indicating that these depend on other factors, such as the type of activity carried out and the size of the cooperative. SUPERIOR courts , *LEGAL judgments , *RESTORATIVE justice , *EXPIRATION , *CONSTRUCTION industry , *WETLANDS - Abstract
The article analyzes the ruling of the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community on July 31, 2024, which dismissed the challenge to an agreement that modified the Catalog of wetlands in the region. The challenge was made by a company in the construction and golf sector, which argued the expiration of the agreement, the lack of reports, and the arbitrariness in the inclusion of a zone in the Catalog. The Court rejected the company's arguments and confirmed the legality of the agreement. [Extracted from the article]

In this article I use the concept of the Plantationocene to discuss contrasting contemporary narratives and practices—namely agroecology versus sustainable intensification. Drawing on long-term research in Malawi, I use the concepts of the plantation imaginary as well as the plot to consider the potential for decolonializing agrarian futures in Africa. I argue that sustainable intensification narratives are a type of plantation imaginary that mobilizes images and ideas of African agrarian knowledge as backward, and African women farmers overburdened, to be saved by modern technology and science. Feminist agroecology can be viewed as a form of plot that allows for new ways of farming and being in communities that is a kind of decolonial thinking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

POOR women , *CONSUMPTION (Economics) , *FISCAL policy , *CONSUMER goods , *GENDER inequality , *MALE contraceptives , *INTRAUTERINE contraceptives - Abstract
The research aims to analyze the considerable Brazilian taxes ICMS and IPI levied on consumer products, which significantly affects low-income women, promoting gender inequality and distancing the effectiveness of social justice. The question that is intended to be answered is how do low-income women constitute themselves as more harmed by the ICMS and IPI taxes levied on consumer products? The research techniques are bibliographic and documentary, of a qualitative nature, and deductive method. Based on the data presented, it is possible to affirm that low-income women in Brazil are neglected by Brazilian taxation, since differences in consumption behavior in relation to men are not considered. These women are largely responsible for taking care of the family, which makes the high rate of exclusively feminine products and subsidies linked to the needs of their families go against the principles of the Federal Constitution. It is essential to adopt a more egalitarian tax policy, which includes lower taxation for exclusively female products, such as contraceptives and hormonal products (IUDs), as is the case with male condoms, classifying them as essential products. GENDER nonconformity , *GENDER identity , *YOUNG adults , *COLLECTIVE consciousness , *YOUTH development - Abstract
This article explores the concept of gender expansiveness. This term refers to a person's self‐identifying as gender fluid, genderqueer, transgender, non‐binary, gender diverse, or gender nonconforming. Young people, including older children and adolescents, increasingly are experimenting with crossing gender lines. This trend can be understood as a sociocultural process for humanizing more terrifying archetypal forms of gender diversity. Using Henderson's (1988) concept of the cultural unconscious, the author posits that current social developments among youth are attempting to bring gender expansiveness more into collective consciousness. This issue has occasioned a strong counterreaction with panicked appeals to upholding traditional gender norms and needing restrictions on gender‐affirming care. Examples from myth, literature and clinical practice help to contextualize the intense emotions aroused by gender diversity. A case example shows how gender fantasies are worked through within an empathic analytic relationship. The author makes an appeal for updating and humanizing older psychological theories that have relied heavily on splits, polarities, and oppositions, all of which are more characteristic of a 20th century way of thinking about the psyche. A potential approach to incorporate gender expansiveness is through a model of the psyche as a mosaic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
