Abstract

International audience; We consider the time-harmonic Maxwell's equations in anisotropic media. The problem to be solved is an approximation of the diffraction problem, or scattering from bounded objects, that is usually set in some exterior domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We consider perfectly conducting objects, so the equations are supplemented with a Dirichlet boundary condition on those objects, and we truncate the exterior domain by imposing an impedance condition on an artificial boundary, to model an approximate radiation condition. The resulting problem is then posed in a bounded domain, with Dirichlet and impedance boundary conditions. In this work, we focus on the mathematical meaning of the impedance condition, precisely in which function space it holds. This relies on a careful analysis of the regularity of the traces of electromagnetic fields, which can be derived thanks to the study of the regularity of the solution to second-order surface PDEs. Then, we prove well-posedness of the model, and we determine the a priori regularity of the fields in the domain and on the boundaries, depending on the geometry, the coefficients and the data. Finally, the discretization of the formulations is presented, with an approximation based on edge finite elements. Error estimates are derived, and a benchmark is provided to discuss those estimates.

Abstract

Classically, the well-posedness of variational formulations of mixed linear problems is achieved through the inf-sup condition. In this note, we propose an alternative framework to study such problems by using the T-coercivity approach. This is a constructive approach that leads to the design of suitable approximations in a simple way. In general, the derivation of the uniform discrete inf-sup condition for the approximate problems stems straightforwardly from the study of the original problem. To support our view, we solve a series of classical mixed problems with the T-coercivity approach. Among others, the celebrated Fortin Lemma appears naturally in the numerical analysis of the approximate problems.; Classiquement, le caractère bien posé des formulations variationnelles de problèmes linéaires mixtes est obtenu à l'aide de la condition inf-sup. Dans cette note, nous proposons un cadre alternatif pour étudier de tels problèmes en utilisant la notion de T-coercivité. Il s'agit d'une approche constructive qui permet en outre de concevoir simplement des approximations numériques adaptées car la dérivation de la condition inf-sup discrète uniforme découle en général directement de l'étude du problème continu. Pour appuyer notre propos, nous résolvons une série de problèmes mixtes classiques grâce à la notion de Tcoercivité. Entre autres, le lemme de Fortin apparaît naturellement dans l'analyse numérique des problèmes discrets.

International audience; We show that the standard Finite Element Heterogeneous Multiscale Method (FE-HMM) can be used to approximate the effective behavior of solutions to the classical Helmholtz equation in highly oscillatory media. Using a novel combination of well-known results about FE-HMM and the notion of T-coercivity, we derive an a priori error bound. Numerical experiments corroborate the analytical findings.; Nous montrons que la méthode multi-échelle hétérogène d'éléments finis (FE-HMM) peut être utilisée pour approcher le comportement effectif des solutions de l'équation de Helmholtz classique dans des milieux rapidement oscillants. À l'aide de cette méthode et de la notion de T-coercivité, nous établissons une borne a priori de l'erreur. Des expériences numériques corroborent les résultats théoriques.

International audience; La méthode des éléments finis, apparue dans les années 50 pour traiter des problèmes de mécanique des structures, a connu depuis lors un développement continu et est utilisée, aujourd’hui, dans tous les domaines d’applications : mécanique, physique, chimie, économie, finance et biologie. Elle est maintenant utilisée dans la plupart des logiciels de calcul scientifique, et de nombreux ingénieurs y sont confrontés dans le cadre de leur activité de modélisation et de simulation numérique. Il est donc important d’en maîtriser les divers aspects.Cet ouvrage recouvre un cours enseigné à l'ENSTA depuis plusieurs années. On y présente tous les éléments essentiels de la méthode : les fondements théoriques (formulations variationnelles d’équations aux dérivées partielles, principes généraux et analyse numérique de la méthode), les considérations pratiques de mise en œuvre (structure creuse des matrices, principe d’assemblage), les algorithmes (en particulier ceux relatifs à la résolution des systèmes linéaires) et enfin des illustrations numériques.

Abstract

International audience; In this Note, we introduce the Fourier Singular Complement Method, for solving Maxwell equations in a 3D prismatic domain. The numerical implementation of this method provides a continuous approximation of the electromagnetic field. Abstract

International audience; Consider two materials with permittivities/diffusivities of opposite sign, and separated by an interface with a corner. Then, when solving the classic (local) models derived from electromagnetics theory, strong singularities may appear. For instance the scalar problem may be ill-posed in H1. To address this difficulty, we study here a nonlocal model for scalar problems with sign-changing coefficients. Numerical results indicate that the proposed nonlocal model has some key advantages over the local one.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we consider an intrinsic approach for the direct computation of the fluxes for problems in potential theory. We develop a general method for the derivation of intrinsic conforming and non-conforming finite element spaces and appropriate lifting operators for the evaluation of the right-hand side from abstract theoretical principles related to the second Strang Lemma. This intrinsic finite element method is analyzed and convergence with optimal order is proved.

International audience; To solve variational indefinite problems, a celebrated tool is the Banach-Ne?as-Babuška theory, which relies on the inf-sup condition. Here, we choose an alternate theory, T-coercivity. This theory relies on explicit inf-sup operators, both at the continuous and discrete levels. It is applied to solve Helmholtz-like problems in acoustics and electromagnetics. We provide simple proofs to solve the exact and discrete problems, and to show convergence under fairly general assumptions. We also establish sharp estimates on the convergence rates. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
