Abstract

International audience; We propose a formal definition of the robustness of association rules for interestingness measures. It is a central concept in the evaluation of the rules and has only been studied unsatisfactorily up to now. It is crucial because a good rule (according to a given quality measure) might turn out as a very fragile rule with respect to small variations in the data. The robustness measure that we propose here is based on a model we proposed in a previous work. It depends on the selected quality measure, the value taken by the rule and the minimal acceptance threshold chosen by the user. We present a few properties of this robustness, detail its use in practice and show the outcomes of various experiments. Furthermore, we compare our results to classical tools of statistical analysis of association rules. All in all, we present a new perspective on the evaluation of association rules.

Abstract

International audience; The paper discusses graded extensions of the cube of opposition, a structure that naturally emerges from the square of opposition in philosophical logic. These extensions of the cube of opposition agree with possibility theory and its four set functions. This extended cube then provides a synthetic and unified view of possibility theory. This is an opportunity to revisit basic notions of possibility theory, in particular regarding the handling of fuzzy events. It turns out that in possibility theory, two extensions of the four basic set functions to fuzzy events exist, which are needed for serving different purposes. The expressions of these extensions involve many-valued conjunction and implication operators that are related either via semi-duality or via residuation.

Abstract

Comparing two items (objects, images) involves a set of relevant attributes whose values are compared. Such a comparison may be expressed in terms of different modalities such as identity, similarity, difference, opposition, analogy. Recently J.-Y. Beziau has proposed an “analogical hexagon” that organizes the relations linking these modalities. The hexagon structure extends the logical square of opposition invented in Aristotle time (in relation with the theory of syllogisms). The interest of these structures has been recently advocated in logic and in artificial intelligence. When non-Boolean attributes are involved, elementary comparisons may be a matter of degree. Moreover, attributes may not have the same importance. One might only consider most attributes rather than all of them, using operators such as ordered weighted min and max. The paper studies in which ways the logical hexagon structure may be preserved in such gradual extensions. As an illustration, we start with the hexagon of equality and inequality due to Blanche and extend it with fuzzy equality and fuzzy inequality.

Abstract

International audience; Mining medical data has significantly gained interest in the recent years thanks to the advances in data mining and machine learning fields. In this work, we focus on a challenging issue in medical data mining: automatic diagnosis code assignment to discharge summaries, i.e., characterizing patient's hospital stay (diseases, symptoms, treatments, etc.) with a set of codes usually derived from the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). We cast the problem as a machine learning task and we experiment some recent approaches based on the probabilis-tic topic models. We demonstrate the efficiency of these models in terms of high predictive scores and ease of result interpretation. As such, we show how topic models enable gaining insights into this field and provide new research opportunities for possible improvements.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we propose a novel evolutionary clustering method for temporal categorical data based on parametric links among multinomial mixture models. Besides clustering, our main goal is to interpret the evolutions of clusters over time. To this aim, first we propose the formulation of a generalized model that establishes parametric links among two multinomial mixture. Afterward, different parametric sub-models are defined in order to model typical evolutions of the clustering structure. Model selection criteria allow to select the best sub-models and thus to guess the clustering evolution.For the experiments, first we evaluate the proposed method with synthetic temporal data. Next, we apply it to analyze the annotated social media data. Results show that the proposed method is better than the state-of-the-art based on the common evaluation metrics. Additionally, it can provide interpretation about the temporal evolution of the clusters.

Data Warehousing technologies and On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) feature a wide range of techniques for the analysis of structured data. However, these techniques are inadequate when it comes to analyzing textual data. Indeed, classical aggregation operators have earned their spurs in the online analysis of numerical data, but are unsuitable for the analysis of textual data. To alleviate this shortcoming, on-line analytical processing in text cubes requires new analysis operators adapted to textual data. In this paper, the authors propose a new aggregation operator named Text Label (TLabel), based on text categorization. Their operator aggregates textual data in several classes of documents. Each class is associated with a label that represents the semantic content of the textual data of the class. TLabel is founded on a tailoring of text mining techniques to OLAP. To validate their operator, the authors perform an experimental study and the preliminary results show the interest of their approach for Text OLAP.

Abstract

International audience; Medieval and modern fiscal documents provide valuable information about the spatial organization of the countryside. They usually describe each plot, indicating the owner's name, the surface area, the land use, the neighbours, and the location. These lists, which contain hundreds of plots with their relative location, have great potential for analyzing the spatial pattern of village territories and the evolution of the landscape, especially when there is a series of successive documents for the same territory, as is often the case. Nevertheless, they have been dramatically under-exploited because it is difficult to reconstruct the landscape from fieldbooks without maps - and field-maps in France only appeared in the 17th-18th centuries. To overcome this difficulty, we propose a model of plots described in fiscal documents based on the use of graph theory. The main idea is to take spatial information from registers and former plot plans and transform it into graphs. The translation of spatial data into graphs should allow a bridge to be created between mapped and unmapped historical documents. On these graphs, each plot corresponds to a vertex and each neighbourhood relationship (adjacency) - visible on a plan or described in the documents as a neighbour - to an edge. The work is carried out using two complementary approaches: the first focuses on establishing a database dealing with records without maps. The second extracts the graph from former plot plans in a Geographic Information System. The goal is to match the graphs produced by these two approaches in order to analyze spatial changes by comparing the graphs, which is not possible from plans or registers alone. First, the protocol to transform plot plans into graphs in the GIS will be developed. Secondly, we will consider the possibilities of comparing two graphs corresponding to two successive states in the GIS.

Abstract

We have surveyed a sample of massive star-forming regions located over a range of distances from the Galactic centre for methyl formate, HCOOCH$_{3}$, and its isotopologues H$^{13}$COOCH$_{3}$ and HCOO$^{13}$CH$_{3}$. The observations were carried out with the APEX telescope in the frequency range 283.4--287.4~GHz. Based on the APEX observations, we report tentative detections of the $^{13}$C-methyl formate isotopologue HCOO$^{13}$CH$_{3}$ towards the following four massive star-forming regions: Sgr~B2(N-LMH), NGC~6334~IRS~1, W51 e2 and G19.61-0.23. In addition, we have used the 1~mm ALMA science verification observations of Orion-KL and confirm the detection of the $^{13}$C-methyl formate species in Orion-KL and image its spatial distribution. Our analysis shows that the $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C isotope ratio in methyl formate toward Orion-KL Compact Ridge and Hot Core-SW components (68.4$\pm$10.1 and 71.4$\pm$7.8, respectively) are, for both the $^{13}$C-methyl formate isotopologues, commensurate with the average $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C ratio of CO derived toward Orion-KL. Likewise, regarding the other sources, our results are consistent with the $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C in CO. We also report the spectroscopic characterization, which includes a complete partition function, of the complex H$^{13}$COOCH$_{3}$ and HCOO$^{13}$CH$_{3}$ species. New spectroscopic data for both isotopomers H$^{13}$COOCH$_{3}$ and HCOO$^{13}$CH$_{3}$, presented in this study, has made it possible to measure this fundamentally important isotope ratio in a large organic molecule for the first time., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series

Abstract

International audience; Deconvolution consists of reconstructing a signal from blurred (and usually noisy) sensory observations. It requires perfect knowledge of the impulse response of the sensor. Relevant works in the litterature propose methods with improved precision and robustness. But those methods are not able to account for a partial knowledge of the impulse response of the sensor. In this article, we experimentally show that inverting a Choquet capacity-based model of an imprecise knowledge of this impulse response allows to robustly recover the measured signal. The method we use is an interval valued extension of the well known Schultz procedure.

Abstract

International audience; Reconstructing a signal from its observations via a sensor device is usually called "deconvolution". Such reconstruction requires perfect knowledge of the impulse response of the sensor involved in the signal measurement. The lower this knowledge, the more biased the reconstruction. In this paper, we present a novel method for reconstructing a signal measured by a sensor whose impulse response is imprecisely known. This technique is based on modeling the relationship between the measurement and the signal via a concave capacity and extending the convolution concept to a concave set of impulse responses. The reconstructed signal is interval-valued, thus reflecting the poor knowledge of the sensor impulse response.

International audience; This paper presents several variants of Sugeno integral, and in particular the idea of (qualitative) desintegrals, a dual of integrals. When evaluating an item, desintegrals are maximal if no defects at all are present, while integrals are maximal if all advantages are sufficiently present. This idea leads to a bipolar representation of preferences, by means of a pair made of an integral and a desintegral, whose possibilistic logic counterparts are outlined (in the case where criteria are binary).

http://archeosciences.revues.org/3758; International audience; Medieval and modern tax documents (fieldbooks, “compoix”, cadasters...) give a rich spatial information. Whole territories are described plot per plot at different succesive periods. Nevertheless, historians don’t know how to relate different states of spatial information on the long term. Moreover, there are no plot plans before the 17th and 18th century. We want to overcome this methodological lock with the following proposition: modelling ancient plots described in tax documents using the topological proprieties of the graph theory. The translation of the spatial data into graphs should allow to set up a commun language between the historical documents, mapped and not mapped. The article talks about the fondamental method choices and the used process to transform the spatial information of ancient plans into graphs which will allow us not only to compare them together, but also to compare them with cadastral registers that have no plan. Finally, it is within a Geographic Information System that will be tested the pertinence of comparing possibilities while studying the plot changes according to the spatiotemporal operators of changement (creation, disappearance, stability, dilatation, contraction, fusion, fission, deformation).; Les documents fiscaux médiévaux et modernes (terriers, compoix, cadastres…) offrent une information spatiale riche. Des territoires entiers sont décrits parcelle par parcelle à des époques successives. Les historiens ne parviennent toutefois jamais à corréler ces différents états de l’information spatiale sur la longue durée, d’autant qu’on ne dispose d’aucun plan parcellaire avant les xviie-xviiie siècles. C’est ce verrou méthodologique qu’il s’agit de dépasser en proposant, dans le cadre de l’ANR Modelespace, une modélisation des parcellaires anciens décrits dans les documents fiscaux en mettant en œuvre les propriétés topologiques de la théorie des graphes. La conversion des données spatiales en graphes doit permettre de mettre en place un langage commun entre les documents historiques. L’article traite des choix méthodologiques fondamentaux et de la démarche utilisée pour transformer l’information spatiale des plans anciens en graphes susceptibles d’être appariés non seulement entre eux, mais encore avec des graphes issus de matrices cadastrales sans plan. Au final, c’est au sein d’un Système d’Information Géographique que devra être testée la pertinence des possibilités de comparaisons en étudiant les recompositions parcellaires selon des opérateurs spatio-temporels de changement (création, disparition, stabilité, dilatation, contraction, fusion, fission, déformation).

Abstract

Sugeno integrals are well-known qualitative aggregation functions in multiple criteria decision making. They return a global evaluation between the minimum and the maximum of the input criteria values. They can model sophisticated aggregation schemes through a system of priorities that applies to any subset of criteria and can take into account some kind of synergy inside subsets of criteria. Although a given Sugeno integral specifies a particular way of implicitly describing a set of entities reaching some global satisfaction level, it is hard to figure out what is the underlying explicit meaning of such an integral in practice (even if the priority level associated to each subset of criteria has a precise meaning). The paper proposes an answer to this problem. Any capacity on a finite set can be represented by a special possibilistic logic base containing positive prioritised clauses, and conversely any possibilistic logic base can represent a set-function. Moreover, Sugeno integral can be represented by a possibilistic logic base expressing how it behaves (thanks to a mapping between the scale and a set of logical atoms reflecting the different values for each criterion). Viewing a Sugeno integral as a set of prioritized logically expressed goals has not only the advantage to make the contents of a Sugeno integral more readable, but it also prompts Sugeno integrals into the realm of logic, and makes it possible to define entailment between them. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Abstract

This article describes the main components of the multiagent model and the tool we are designing in order to analyze the structure and the dynamics of an historical social network from the Middle Age. This social network has been built through the discovery of many notarized documents and first studied according to a mathematical approach. Using a customizable multiagent system to simulate the network’s evolution and Markov chain calculus to adjust behavioral parameters, we propose a method to assess behaviors’ importance and effects on the global network’s evolution. From a historical point of view, this multiagent model also aims at explaining this network’s dynamics during some specific periods such as the Hundred Year’s War where numerous notarized documents disappeared.

Logic-based descriptions offer compact representations for binary properties. Besides, Sugeno integrals are wellknown as a powerful qualitative aggregation tool in multiplecriteria decision, which is applicable to gradual properties, and takes into account positive synergies between properties. The paper proposes to investigate the potential use of Sugeno integrals as a representation tool, to lay bare their relation with possibilistic logic representations, and to discuss the handling of negative synergies in this setting using a pair of Sugeno integrals.

Abstract

CSDA09PS; International audience; No satisfactory method for measuring and presenting the performance of confidence regions can be found in the literature. Techniques for measuring the effectiveness of confidence regions and for the graphical display of simulation evidence regarding the coverage and effectiveness of confidence regions are developed and illustrated. Three types of figures are discussed: called coverage plots, coverage discrepancy plots, and coverage effectiveness curves, which makes it possible to show the ''genuine'' effectiveness, rather than a spurious nominal effectiveness. These figures are used to illustrate the finite sample properties of autoregressive parameter confidence regions in the context of AR(1) processes.

Abstract

International audience; In this chapter, we present an original and synthetical overview of most of the commonly used association rule statistical interestingness measures introduced in previous works. These measures usually relate the confidence of a rule to an independency reference situation. Others relate it to indetermination, or impose a minimum confidence threshold. We propose a systematic generalization of these measures, taking into account a reference point, chosen by an expert, in order to apprehend the confidence of a rule. This generalization introduces new connections between measures. They lead to the enhancement of some measures. We then propose new parameterized possibilities. The behavior of the parameterized measures is illustrated using classical datasets, and these measures are compared to their original counter-parts. This study highlights the different properties of each of them and discusses the advantages of our proposition.

Abstract

International audience; Hierarchical graphs using a decimation process can be applied to animage to obtain segmentation. However, this method encounters limitations.First the decimation proceeds at each step in a general way on theentire image. Second, a criterion is needed to stop the iterative process whenthe best segmentation is obtained. We propose a statistical testto control the region growing process. This test, based on Moran's spatialautocorrelation coefficient, controls the decimation process both globally andlocally at the same time. Results on a composite image indicate that the localand global tests are a powerful tool for optimizing the image segmentationprocess.

Abstract

International audience; We present in this chapter an overview of the benchmarks aimed at evaluating the performances of Object-Oriented Databases (OODBs). We particularly focus on OCB (the Object Clustering Benchmark), which is both generic and originally designed to specifically evaluate the performances of clustering policies within OODBs. OCB is generic because its sample database may be customized to fit any of the databases introduced by the main previous benchmarks, e.g., OO1 (Object Operation 1) or OO7. The first version of OCB was purposely clustering-oriented due to a clustering-oriented workload, but OCB has been thoroughly extended to be able to suit other purposes. Eventually, OCB's code is compact and easily portable. OCB has been validated through two implementations: one within the O 2 OODB and another one within the Texas persistent object store. The performances of two different clustering policies implemented in Texas, DSTC (Dynamic, Statistical, Tunable Clustering) and DRO (Detection & Reclustering of Objects), have also been compared with OCB.
