Introduction Photodynamic therapy (PDT), which induces tissue damage by exposing tissue to a specific wavelength of light in the presence of a photosensitizer and oxygen, is a promising alternative treatment that could be used as an adjunct to chemotherapy and surgery in oncology. Cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) with high arginine content, such as protamine, have membrane translocation and lysosome localization activities. They have been used in an extensive range of drug delivery applications. Methods We conjugated cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) with methylene blue (MB) and then purification by FPLC. Synthesis structure was characterized by the absorbance spectrum, FPLC, Maldi-TOF, and then evaluated cell viability by cytotoxicity assay after photodynamic therapy (PDT) assay. An uptake imaging assay was used to determine the sites of MB and MB-Pro in subcellular compartments. Results In vitro assays showed that MB-Pro has more efficient photodynamic activities than MB alone for the colon cancer cells, owing to lysosome rupture causing the rapid necrotic cell death. In this study, we coupled protamine with MB for high efficacy PDT. The conjugates localized in the lysosomes and enhanced the efficiency of PDT by inducing necrotic cell death, whereas PDT with non-coupled MB resulted in only apoptotic processes. Discussion Our research aimed to enhance PDT by engineering the photosensitizers using CPPs coupled with methylene blue (MB). MB alone permeates through the cell membrane and distributes into the cytoplasm, whereas coupling of MB dye with CPPs localizes the MB through an endocytic mechanism to a specific organelle where the localized conjugates enhance the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and induce cell damage.

The injection and mixing of contaminant mass into the fuel in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) implosions is a primary factor preventing ignition. ICF experiments have recently achieved an alpha-heating regime, in which fusion self-heating is the dominant source of yield, by reducing the susceptibility of implosions to instabilities that inject this mass. We report the results of unique separated reactants implosion experiments studying pre-mixed contaminant as well as detailed high-resolution three-dimensional simulations that are in good agreement with experiments. At conditions relevant to mixing regions in high-yield implosions, we observe persistent chunks of contaminant that do not achieve thermal equilibrium with the fuel throughout the burn phase. The assumption of thermal equilibrium is made in nearly all computational ICF modeling and methods used to infer levels of contaminant from experiments. We estimate that these methods may underestimate the amount of contaminant by a factor of two or more., The influence of contaminants is one of the factors hindering self-sustained thermonuclear burn in inertial confinement fusion. Here, the authors present evidence, through simulations and experiments, that contaminants do not fully reach thermal equilibrium, and thus their amount is usually underestimated.

Human exposure to wildfire-derived particulate matter (PM) is linked to adverse health outcomes; however, little is known regarding the influence of biomass fuel type and burn conditions on toxicity. The aim of this study was to assess the irritant potential of extractable organic material (EOM) of biomass smoke condensates from 5 fuels (Eucalyptus, Pine, Pine Needle, Peat, or Red Oak), representing various fire-prone regions of the USA, burned at two temperatures each [flaming ( approximately 640° C) or (smoldering approximately 500° C)] using a locomotor assay in zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae. It was postulated that locomotor responses as measures of irritant effects, might be dependent up on fuel type and burn conditions and that these differences relate to combustion byproduct chemistry. To test this, locomotor activity was tracked for 60 min in 6-day old zebrafish larvae (25–32/group) immediately after exposure to 0.4% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) vehicle or EOM from the biomass smoke condensates (0.3–30 μg EOM/ml; half-log intervals). All EOM samples produced concentration-dependent irritant responses. Linear regression analysis to derive rank-order potency indicated that on a μg PM basis, flaming Pine and Eucalyptus were the most irritating. In contrast, on an emission-factor basis, which normalizes responses to the amount of PM produced/kg of fuel burned, smoldering smoke condensates induced greater irritant responses (>100-fold) than flaming smoke condensates, with smoldering Pine being the most potent. Importantly, irritant responses significantly correlated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) content, but not with organic carbon or methoxyphenols. Data indicate that fuel type and burn condition influence the quantity and chemical composition of PM as well as toxicity.

Here we report the complete genome sequence of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens ATC6, which produces acidic cellulase, isolated from pig feces. The genome is 4,062,817 bp in length and has a guanine-cytosine (GC) content of 46.27%. Among the predicted 3,913 protein-coding genes, two glucanase genes, which are involved in lichenan and cellulose degradation, were found. This genome analysis helps clarify the mechanism involved in cellulose biodegradation and support its application for efficient use of livestock feeds.

Pore-filling ion exchange membranes are fabricated by complicated and energy-inefficient processes, use of large amounts of polar organic solvents, and optionally post-modification using acid or base. For green fabrication of pore-filling anion exchange membranes (PAEMs), we optimized the process parameters such as pretreatment time, impregnation time, water amount, and photo-polymerization rate of each step using roll to roll (R2R) equipment. Based on these optimized process parameters, a PAEM of 57.5 cm width and 39 μm thickness completely filled with a photo-cured electrolyte polymer was fabricated by aqueous pretreatment and by using an impregnation solution without toxic organic solvents. The impregnation step was conducted along with photo-polymerization at a line speed of 0.3 m/min without repeated impregnation with R2R equipment. The IEC, resistance, and permselectivity of this PAEM were similar to those of handmade PAEMs. The PAEM exhibited chemical stability in the pH range of 0–12. In addition, the reverse electrodialysis stack assembled with these PAEMs exhibited a higher power density than a stack of commercial ion exchange membranes. These results demonstrate that industrial-scale PAEM can be fabricated through a rapid, simple, environmentally friendly, and energy-efficient R2R process.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in human beings. Therefore, it is important to detect specific target tumors earlier enough in the formative stages of cancer without causing negative side effects and damages to the body. In this study, we proposed bio-engineered short mussel adhesive proteins (MAPs)-carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as specific tumor-targeted carriers for biomedical imaging. Short CNT near-infrared fluorophore (NIRF) hybrid carriers that were developed accumulated in the tumors with exceptional clearance and specific targeting in less time, and these results indicated that bioengineered short CNT-based carriers have great potential for real time tumor imaging.

The utilization of large amounts of volatile organic solvents and the complicated process required for industrial manufacturing of ion-exchange membranes necessitate the development of simple, rapid, and environmentally friendly fabrication methods such as those based on photopolymerization. We employed hydrolytic sol–gel reactions between ammonium- and acrylamide-functionalized silane coupling agents to synthesize water-soluble siloxane resins that exhibit high condensation levels (>80%) and comprise oligomers with molecular weights below 2000 Da. These resins were then mixed with a hydrophilic monomer bearing ammonium and acrylamide groups, and porous polyethylene substrates were impregnated with the resulting mixtures and then irradiated with ultraviolet light. The hydrophilicity, mechanical strength, and other properties of the resulting membranes depended on the resin composition, indicating that the substrate pores were efficiently filled with the prepared resins and further suggesting that the membrane performance could be effectively altered by varying the resin composition. Moreover, the obtained membranes exhibited chemical stability in the pH range between 0 and 11 and in hot water at 60 °C. The reverse electrodialysis stack consisting of these membranes showed higher power density than a stack of commercial membranes. Therefore, it can be concluded that without employing volatile organic solvents for reverse electrodialysis, the developed technique is well-suited for the fabrication of ion-exchange membranes.

A typical aircraft engine consists of fans, compressors, turbines, and so on, and each is made of multiple layers of blades. Discovering the site of damages among the large number of blades during aircraft engine maintenance is quite important. However, it is impossible to look directly into the engine unless it is disassembled. For this reason, optical equipment such as a videoscope is used to visually inspect the blades of an engine through inspection holes. The videoscope inspection method has some obvious drawbacks such as the long-time attention on microscopic video feed and high labor intensity. In this research, we developed a damage recognition algorithm using convolutional neural networks and some image-processing techniques related to feature point extraction and matching in order to improve the videoscope inspection method. The image-processing techniques were mainly used for the preprocessing of the videoscope images, from which a suspected damaged region is selected after the preprocessing. The suspected region is finally classified as damaged or normal by the pre-trained convolutional neural networks. We trained the convolutional neural networks 2000 times by using data from 380 images and calculated the classification accuracy using data from 40 images. After repeating the above procedure 50 times with the data randomly divided into training and test groups, an average classification accuracy of 95.2% for each image and a damage detectability of 100% in video were obtained. For verification of the proposed approach, the convolutional neural network part was compared with the traditional neural network, and the preprocessing was compared with the region proposal network of the faster region–based convolutional neural networks. In addition, we developed a platform based on the developed damage recognition algorithm and conducted field tests with a videoscope for a real engine. The damage detection AI platform was successfully applied to the inspection video probed in an in-service engine.

Wearable displays are considered as a bilateral communication tool in the hyperconnected era. Although several electronic clothing display was demonstrated, high power consumption issue still remained. Here, we present wireless powered wearable μLEDs (WμLEDs) with excellent stability. A custom-designed wireless power supply system operated a 30 × 30 WμLED array on a fabric. The WμLED stability was intensively investigated under bending, stretching, 85 °C/85% relative humidity and artificial sunlight conditions, showing the suitability of WμLED outdoor usage. Finally, a passive-matrix WμLED display successfully emitted a brilliant red glow on a fabric.

In this study, Mo3Se3- single-chain atomic crystals (SCACs) with atomically small chain diameters of ∼0.6 nm, large surface areas, and mechanical flexibility were synthesized and investigated as an extracellular matrix (ECM)-mimicking scaffold material for tissue engineering applications. The proliferation of L-929 and MC3T3-E1 cell lines increased up to 268.4 ± 24.4% and 396.2 ± 8.1%, respectively, after 48 h of culturing with Mo3Se3- SCACs. More importantly, this extremely high proliferation was observed when the cells were treated with 200 μg mL-1 of Mo3Se3- SCACs, which is above the cytotoxic concentration of most nanomaterials reported earlier. An ECM-mimicking scaffold film prepared by coating Mo3Se3- SCACs on a glass substrate enabled the cells to adhere to the surface in a highly stretched manner at the initial stage of cell adhesion. Most cells cultured on the ECM-mimicking scaffold film remained alive; in contrast, a substantial number of cells cultured on glass substrates without the Mo3Se3- SCAC coating did not survive. This work not only proves the exceptional biocompatible and bioactive characteristics of the Mo3Se3- SCACs but also suggests that, as an ECM-mimicking scaffold material, Mo3Se3- SCACs can overcome several critical limitations of most other nanomaterials.

Any transition toward an era of flexible electronics will have to overcome the mechanical limitations of materials. Specifically, the attainment of both strength and flexibility, which are generally mutually exclusive, is required including glass-like wear resistance, plastic-like compliance, and a high level of strain. Here, we fabricate a urethane-methacrylate-siloxane hybrid (UMSH) material. It is found that UMSH, with molecule-level hybridization of urethane linkage and methacrylate-siloxane conetworks, demonstrates ceramic-like high strength (574 MPa), yet polymer-like low modulus (8.42 GPa), and even high strain (6.3%) at fracture with excellent optical transparency. This combination of high strength, flexibility, and optical transparency indicates that this is a suitable material for glass substitution and can be used as a transparent flexible cover window for foldable display.

Exposure to wildfire smoke continues to be a growing threat to public health, yet the chemical components in wildfire smoke that primarily drive toxicity and associated disease are largely unknown. This study utilized a suite of computational approaches to identify groups of chemicals induced by variable biomass burn conditions that were associated with biological responses in the mouse lung, including pulmonary immune response and injury markers. Smoke condensate samples were collected and characterized, resulting in chemical distribution information for 86 constituents across ten different exposures. Mixtures-relevant statistical methods included (i) a chemical clustering and data-reduction method, weighted chemical co-expression network analysis (WCCNA), (ii) a quantile g-computation approach to address the joint effect of multiple chemicals in different groupings, and (iii) a correlation analysis to compare mixtures modeling results against individual chemical relationships. Seven chemical groups were identified using WCCNA based on co-occurrence showing both positive and negative relationships with biological responses. A group containing methoxyphenols (e.g., coniferyl aldehyde, eugenol, guaiacol, and vanillin) displayed highly significant, negative relationships with several biological esponses, including cytokines and lung injury markers. This group was further shown through quantile g-computation methods to associate with reduced biological responses. Specifically, mixtures modeling based on all chemicals excluding those in the methoxyphenol group demonstrated more significant, positive relationships with several biological responses; whereas mixtures modeling based on just those in the methoxyphenol group demonstrated significant negative relationships with several biological responses, suggesting potential protective effects. Mixtures-based analyses also identified other groups consisting of inorganic elements and ionic constituents showing positive relationships with several biological responses, including markers of inflammation. Many of the effects identified through mixtures modeling in this analysis were not captured through individual chemical analyses. Together, this study demonstrates the utility of mixtures-based approaches to identify potential drivers and inhibitors of toxicity relevant to wildfire exposures., Graphical Abstract

Wildland fires (WF) are linked to adverse health impacts related to poor air quality. The cardiovascular impacts of emissions from specific biomass sources, however, are unknown. The purpose of this study was to assess the cardiovascular impacts of a single exposure to peat smoke, a key regional WF air pollution source, and relate these to baroreceptor sensitivity and inflammation. Three-month-old male Wistar-Kyoto rats, implanted with radiotelemeters for continuous monitoring of heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), and spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), were exposed once, for 1-hr, to filtered air or low (0.38 mg/m(3) PM) or high (4.04 mg/m(3)) concentrations of peat smoke. Systemic markers of inflammation and sensitivity to aconitine-induced cardiac arrhythmia, a measure of latent myocardial vulnerability, were assessed in separate cohorts of rats 24 hr after exposure. PM size (low peat = 0.4 – 0.5 microns vs. high peat = 0.8 – 1.2 microns) and proportion of organic carbon (low peat = 77% vs. high peat = 65%) varied with exposure level. Exposure to high peat and to a lesser extent low peat increased systolic and diastolic BP relative to filtered air. By contrast, only exposure to low peat elevated BRS and aconitine-induced arrhythmogenesis relative to filtered air and increased circulating levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, complement components C3 and C4, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), and white blood cells. Taken together, exposure to peat smoke produced overt and latent cardiovascular consequences that were likely influenced by physicochemical characteristics of the smoke and associated adaptive homeostatic mechanisms.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have shown that air pollution exposure primes the body to heightened responses to everyday stressors of the cardiovascular system. The purpose of this study was to examine the utility of postprandial responses to a high carbohydrate oral load, a cardiometabolic stressor long used to predict cardiovascular risk, in assessing the impacts of exposure to eucalyptus smoke (ES), a contributor to wildland fire air pollution in the Western coast of the United States. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three-month-old male Sprague Dawley rats were exposed once (1 hr) to filtered air (FA) or ES (700 μg/m(3) fine particulate matter), generated by burning eucalyptus in a tube furnace. Rats were then fasted for six hours the following morning, and subsequently administered an oral gavage of either water or a HC suspension (70 kcal% from carbohydrate), mimicking a HC meal. Two hours post gavage, cardiovascular ultrasound, cardiac pressure-volume (PV), and baroreceptor sensitivity assessments were made, and pulmonary and systemic markers assessed. RESULTS: ES inhalation alone increased serum interleukin (IL)-4 and nasal airway levels of gamma glutamyl transferase. HC gavage alone increased blood glucose, blood pressure, and serum IL-6 and IL-13 compared to water vehicle. By contrast, only ES-exposed and HC-challenged animals had increased PV loop measures of cardiac output, stroke volume, ejection fraction %, dP/dt(max), dP/dt(min), and stroke work compared to ES exposure alone and/or HC challenge alone. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Exposure to model wildfire air pollution modifies cardiovascular responses to HC challenge, suggesting air pollution sensitizes the body to systemic triggers.

Recording neural activity from the living brain is of great interest in neuroscience for interpreting cognitive processing or neurological disorders. Despite recent advances in neural technologies, development of a soft neural interface that integrates with neural tissues, increases recording sensitivity, and prevents signal dissipation still remains a major challenge. Here, we introduce a biocompatible, conductive, and biostable neural interface, a supramolecular β-peptide-based hydrogel that allows signal amplification via tight neural/hydrogel contact without neuroinflammation. The non-biodegradable β-peptide forms a multihierarchical structure with conductive nanomaterial, creating a three-dimensional electrical network, which can augment brain signal efficiently. By achieving seamless integration in brain tissue with increased contact area and tight neural tissue coupling, the epidural and intracortical neural signals recorded with the hydrogel were augmented, especially in the high frequency range. Overall, our tissuelike chronic neural interface will facilitate a deeper understanding of brain oscillation in broad brain states and further lead to more efficient brain-computer interfaces.

Ultraviolet (UV)-curable and highly condensed (>86%) methacrylate phenyl oligo-siloxane (MPO) was synthesized by non-hydrolytic sol–gel condensation reaction between methacrylate and phenyl silane precursor. The MPO resin was then cured by an UV-initiated free-radical polymerization to fabricate a transparent (>90% at 550 nm) methacrylate–siloxane hybrid material (methacrylate hybrimer). An urethane butanediol dimethacrylate (UBDM) monomer was synthesized as a cross-linker into the methacrylate hybrimer networks without micro-phase separation. The UBDM increased methacrylate conversion and mechanical properties due to the hydrogen bonding of the urethane linkage. The hardness, modulus, and strength were improved by UBDM insertion, the flexibility was even increased with 140% elongation, compared to neat MH. In addition, a storage modulus related to the thermo-mechanical properties was also enhanced by a denser cross-linkage with the urethane linkage.

In drug delivery to the human brain, blood vessels are a significant hurdle because they restrict the entry of most solutes to protect brain. To overcome this hurdle, an in vitro 3D model for brain endothelial barrier is developed using a microfluidic device with hydrogel providing a 3D extracellular matrix scaffold. Using the model, peptides known to utilize receptor-mediated transcytosis are verified, which has been one of the most promising mechanisms for brain-specific penetration. The cytotoxicity and cellular damage to the peptide are investigated and the receptor-mediated transcytosis and brain endothelial specific penetrating abilities of the peptides in a quantitative manner are demonstrated. As a preclinical test, applying the quantification assays conducted in this study are suggested, including the penetrating ability, cytotoxicity, endothelial damage, and receptor specificity. Using this microfluidic device as an in vitro platform for evaluating various brain targeting drugs and drug carrier candidates is also proposed.

Despite the lysosomal "proton sponge hypothesis" being considered to be an additional factor for stimulating the cellular toxicity of nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems, a clear relationship between the massive influx of calcium ions and the proton sponge effect, both of which are associated with cancer cell apoptosis, has still not been elucidated. Cetrimonium bromide (CTAB: cationic quaternary amino group based) gold nanorods possessed a more effective electric surface charge for inducing the lysosomal proton sponge effect than anionic gold nanoparticles. In this aspect, identifying released cytoplasmic Cl-, arising from the ruptured lysosomal compartment, in the cytoplasm is critical for supporting the "proton sponge hypothesis". This study clarified that the burst release of Cl-, as a result of lysosomal swelling by CTAB gold nanorods, stimulates the transient receptor potential channels melastatin 2 (TRPM2) channels, and subsequently induces a massive Ca2+ influx, which independently increases apoptosis of cancer cells. Although the previous concept of elevated cancer apoptosis acting through the proton sponge effect is unclear, this study supports the evidence that a massive Ca2+ influx mediated in response to a burst release of Cl- significantly influenced cytotoxicity of cancer cells in tumor tissues.

Biomaterials derived via programmable supramolecular protein assembly provide a viable means of constructing precisely defined structures. Here, we present programmed superstructures of AuPt nanoparticles (NPs) on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that exhibit distinct electrocatalytic activities with respect to the nanoparticle positions via rationally modulated peptide-mediated assembly. De novo designed peptides assemble into six-helix bundles along the CNT axis to form a suprahelical structure. Surface cysteine residues of the peptides create AuPt-specific nucleation site, which allow for precise positioning of NPs onto helical geometries, as confirmed by 3-D reconstruction using electron tomography. The electrocatalytic model system, i.e., AuPt for oxygen reduction, yields electrochemical response signals that reflect the controlled arrangement of NPs in the intended assemblies. Our design approach can be expanded to versatile fields to build sophisticated functional assemblies.

This study was conducted to determine the relationship between dye structure, particularly the structural charge and flexibility, and binding affinity. We also investigated the effect of multivalency on the maximum fluorescence intensity by conjugating varying numbers of monovalent fluorochromes on nanoparticles. Fluorochrome-conjugated nanoparticles were synthesized by conjugating N-hydroxysuccinimide ester of quinolinium,4-[(3-methyl-2(3H)-benzothiazolylidene)methyl]- 1-[3-(trimethylammonio)propyl]-,iodide (TO-PRO 1 NHS ester) into aminated nanoparticles. The half maximum effective concentration (EC50) of DNA-binding fluorochromes and fluorochrome-conjugated nanoparticles for double- stranded nucleic acid (dsDNA) was investigated by fluorescence. Two important factors regulating the binding characteristics of fluorochromes were studied: the number of positive charges and the structural flexibility. Positive charge enhancement of binding affinity was observed in various systems. TO-PRO 1, which has two positive charges, showed higher binding affinity than TO. Rigid structured dyes, propidium iodide and 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI), exhibited significantly lower maximum fluorescence than TO-PRO 1, even though they both have two positive charges. The dye with three positive charges, SYTOX Green, showed higher binding affinity than TO-PRO 1. TO-PRO 1 dimer (TO-TO), which has four positive charges, showed the highest binding affinity to DNA. Flexible dyes exhibited more than 1000-fold higher fluorescence upon binding to dsDNA. The multivalency of the fluorochromes on the nanoparticles revealed that a shorter distance between fluorochromes was related to higher maximum fluorescence intensity. The fluorescence intensity of multivalent fluorochromes was substantially dependent on the distance between the monovalent sites.

Improving the efficiency of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for use in commercial fuel cells has been the subject of diverse synthetic research activities. However, due to their inferior catalytic performance and dispensability, there are still limitations to achieving breakthroughs regarding ORR catalytic activity using carbon nanomaterials, despite their high electron-transfer and mass-transport properties. In this study, we mimicked nature by using a biomineralization approach for controlling the growth of inorganic materials and demonstrated improved ORR values. The designed peptide, Hexcoil-Ala, is able to supramolecular assembly on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), leading to SWNTs that are well dispersed in aqueous solution. In order to direct gold nanoparticle (AuNP) nucleation sites, we substitute two residues in Hexcoil-Ala with cysteine to provide the mutated peptide, HexCoil-Ala-2Cys. This peptide affords a sophisticated, size-controlled, and well-dispersed arrangement of AuNPs. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy studies confirmed the homogeneously well-aligned distribution of nanosized AuNPs on the HexCoil-Ala-2Cys structure, along the direction of SWNT axis. The (AuNPs/P-SWNT) composite in water provides dispersed and stable metallic nanoparticles of electrostatically modified Au through synergistic effects involving the peptide. Consequently, this catalyst exhibits improved ORR performance compared to bulk gold and even, in case of number of electrons ( n ) transferred, higher than the number of Pt/C. X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopies reveal the details of the electronic interactions among the components of the AuNP/P-SWNT composite, and how they facilitate the four-electron reaction pathway. This study provides valuable information for the optimization of catalyst synthesis and precise particle-size control, leading to stable, water-dispersive composites, with improved electronic properties for enhanced ORR performance in fuel cells.

We propose a new topological shape optimization scheme based on the artificial bee colony algorithm (ABCA). Since the level set method (LSM) and phase field method (PFM) in topological shape optimization have been developed, one of any algorithms in this field has not yet been proposed. To perform the topological shape optimization based on the ABCA, a variable called the “Boundary Element Indicator (BEI),” is introduced, which serves to define the boundary elements whenever a temporary candidate solution is found in the employed and onlooker bee phases. Numerical examples are provided to verify the performance of the suggested ABCA compared with the discrete LSM and the ABCA for topology optimization. The numerical examples showed that holes in the structure are naturally created in the ABCA for topological shape optimization. Moreover, the objective function of the suggested ABCA is lower than that of the ABCA for topology optimization, and is similar to that of the discrete LSM. The convergence rate of the suggested ABCA is the fastest among the comparison methods. Therefore, it can be verified that the suggested topological shape optimization scheme, based on the ABCA, is the most effective among the comparison methods.

In this paper we study a simplified transient energy-transport model in semiconductors with a general conductivity and the Dirichlet boundary conditions on an interval. By using a new iterative scheme, we prove the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions provided that the variation of the temperature is small. Also, the existence and stability of stationary solutions are proved if the temperature is large.

Herein, we report a new version of a bioinspired chitin nanofiber (ChNF) transparent laminated composite film (HCLaminate) made of siloxane hybrid materials (hybrimers) reinforced with ChNFs, which mimics the nanofiber-matrix structure of hierarchical biocomposites. Our HCLaminate is produced via vacuum bag compressing and subsequent UV-curing of the matrix resin-impregnated ChNF transparent paper (ChNF paper). It is worthwhile to note that this new type of ChNF-based transparent substrate film retains the strengths of the original ChNF paper and compensates for ChNF paper's drawbacks as a flexible transparent substrate. As a result, compared with high-performance synthetic plastic films, such as poly(ethylene terephthalate), poly(ether sulfone), poly(ethylene naphthalate), and polyimide, our HCLaminate is characterized to exhibit extremely smooth surface topography, outstanding optical clarity, high elastic modulus, high dimensional stability, etc. To prove our HCLaminate as a substrate film, we use it to fabricate flexible perovskite solar cells and a touch-screen panel. As far as we know, this work is the first to demonstrate flexible optoelectronics, such as flexible perovskite solar cells and a touch-screen panel, actually fabricated on a composite film made of ChNF. Given its desirable macroscopic properties, we envision our HCLaminate being utilized as a transparent substrate film for flexible green optoelectronics.

The exothermic reduction of oxides mixture (MoO3+2SiO2) by magnesium in NaF melt enables the synthesis of nanocrystalline MoSi2 powders in near-quantitative yields. The combustion wave with temperature of about 1000–1200 °C was recorded in highly diluted by NaF starting mixtures. The by-products of combustion reaction (NaF and MgO) were subsequently removed by leaching with acid and washing with water. The as-prepared MoSi2 nanopowder composed of spherical and dendritic shape particles was consolidated using the spark plasma sintering method at 1200–1500 °C and 50 MPa for 10 min. The result was dense compacts (98.6% theoretical density) possessing submicron grains and exhibiting hardness of 8.74–12.92 GPa.

The production of soybean cyst nematode (SCN), Heterodera glycines, including female formation and fecundity was much higher in SCN race 14 (R14) than in race 3 (R3) in susceptible soybean cultivars Bragg (intolerant), Lee74 (moderately tolerant), and PI 97100 (highly tolerant). The nematode body was also significantly larger in R14 than in R3 at 20 days after inoculation, but the further nematode growth appeared to be slower in R14 than in R3, resulting in no significant difference between the two races at 30 days after inoculation. Within each race, no significant difference was observed in the growth and reproduction among the soybean cultivars tested. Syncytial areas near the nematode lip regions (infection sites) were measured for each soybean cultivar-SCN race combination. R14 induced significantly larger syncytia than R3. Bragg had relatively larger syncytia than Lee74 and PI 97100, but the difference among the soybean cultivars was minimal or not significantly different. Syncytium occupation in the stelar region differed only between PI 97100 and the other two cultivars, which may be somewhat, but not exactly, related to tolerance levels. Syncytial cytomplasm was degenerated more with R14 and in Bragg than with R3 and in Lee74 and PI 97100, respectively. In light microscopy, degenerated syncytia were characterized by depleted and loose cytoplasm with less plastids than normal-looking (intact) syncytia which had dense syncytial cytoplasm. Electron microscopy revealed that degenerated syncytia contained highly vacuolated cytoplasm with degenerated plastids. The above results suggest that structural characteristics of syncytia may match the nematode growth and reproduction.

The Cleveland airshed comprises a complex mixture of industrial source emissions that contribute to periods of non-attainment for fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and are associated with increased adverse health outcomes in the exposed population. Specific PM sources responsible for health effects however are not fully understood. Size-fractionated PM (coarse, fine, and ultrafine) samples were collected using a ChemVol sampler at an urban site (G.T. Craig (GTC)) and rural site (Chippewa Lake (CLM)) from July 2009 to June 2010, and then chemically analyzed. The resulting speciated PM data were apportioned by EPA positive matrix factorization to identify emission sources for each size fraction and location. For comparisons with the ChemVol results, PM samples were also collected with sequential dichotomous and passive samplers, and evaluated for source contributions to each sampling site. The ChemVol results showed that annual average concentrations of PM, elemental carbon, and inorganic elements in the coarse fraction at GTC were ∼2, ∼7, and ∼3 times higher than those at CLM, respectively, while the smaller size fractions at both sites showed similar annual average concentrations. Seasonal variations of secondary aerosols (e.g., high NO3− level in winter and high SO42− level in summer) were observed at both sites. Source apportionment results demonstrated that the PM samples at GTC and CLM were enriched with local industrial sources (e.g., steel plant and coal-fired power plant) but their contributions were influenced by meteorological conditions and the emission source's operation conditions. Taken together the year-long PM collection and data analysis provides valuable insights into the characteristics and sources of PM impacting the Cleveland airshed in both the urban center and the rural upwind background locations. These data will be used to classify the PM samples for toxicology studies to determine which PM sources, species, and size fractions are of greatest health concern.

Carbon shell areal density measurements from many types of inertial confinement fusion implosions at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) demonstrate that the final state of the outside portion of the shell is set primarily by capsule coast time, the coasting period between main laser shut off and peak fusion output. However, the fuel areal density does not correlate with the increasing carbon compression. While two-dimensional (2D) radiation-hydrodynamic simulations successfully capture the carbon compression, energy must be added to the simulated fuel-ice layer to reproduce fuel areal density measurements. The data presented demonstrates that the degradation mechanisms that reduce the compressibility of the fuel do not reduce the compressibility of the ablator.

Acute and chronic exposures to biomass wildfire smoke pose significant health risks to firefighters and impacted communities. Susceptible populations such as asthmatics may be particularly sensitive to wildfire effects. We examined pulmonary responses to biomass smoke generated from combustion of peat, oak, or eucalyptus in control and house dust mite (HDM)-allergic mice. Mice were exposed 1 hour/day for 2 consecutive days to emissions from each fuel type under smoldering or flaming conditions (~40 or ~3.3 mg PM/m(3), respectively) while maintaining comparable CO levels (~60–120 ppm). Control and allergic mice reduced breathing frequency during exposure to all biomass emissions compared with pre-exposure to clean air. Smoldering eucalyptus and oak, but not peat, further reduced frequency compared to flaming conditions in control and allergic groups, while also reducing minute volume and peak inspiratory flow in control mice. Several biochemical and cellular markers of lung injury and inflammation were suppressed by all biomass emission types in both HDM-allergic and control mice. Control mice exposed to flaming eucalyptus at different PM concentrations (C) and times (T) with the same C×T product had a greater decrease in breathing frequency with high concentration acute exposure compared with lower concentration episodic exposure. This decrease was ameliorated by PM HEPA filtration, indicating that the respiratory changes were partially mediated by biomass smoke particles. These data show that exposure to smoldering eucalyptus or oak smoke inhibits respiratory responses to a greater degree than peat smoke. Anti-inflammatory effects of CO may possibly contribute to smoke-induced suppression of allergic inflammatory responses.

Herein, we report a luminescent light-emitting diode (LED) encapsulating material using a thermally curable quantum dot (QD)/siloxane hybrid (TSE-QD) color converter, which has superior long-term stability even at elevated temperatures, in high humidity, and in various chemicals. The TSE-QD is cured by a thermal-induced hydrosilylation reaction of an in situ sol–gel synthesized QD dispersed siloxane resin (QD/siloxane resin) without additional ligand-exchange processes. QDs are successfully encapsulated by highly condensed and linear structured siloxane networks with additional chemical linkages between the surface ligands of the QDs and organic functional groups of the siloxane matrix. Moreover, QDs are uniformly distributed within the siloxane matrix retaining their optical properties during the fabrication processes of the TSE-QD. The result is that the stability, as evaluated by the photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY), is greatly improved under harsh conditions, for example, 120 °C/5% relative humidity (RH), ethanol and acetone for 30 days. Based on the exceptionally stable TSE-QD, we demonstrate a white LED using a blue LED chip directly encapsulated by a yellow emitting TSE-QD that shows excellent spectral stability, outstanding reliability at 85 °C/85% RH and a wide color gamut (116% of NTSC).

The characteristics of wildland fire smoke exposures which initiate or exacerbate cardiopulmonary conditions are unclear. We previously reported that, on a mass basis, lung toxicity associated with particulate matter (PM) from flaming smoke aspirated into mouse lungs is greater than smoldering PM. In this study, we developed a computer-controlled inhalation system which can precisely control complex biomass smoke emissions from different combustion conditions. This system was used to examine the toxicity of inhaled biomass smoke from peat, eucalyptus, and oak fuels generated under smoldering and flaming phases with emissions set to the same approximate concentration of carbon monoxide (CO) for each exposure (60–110 ppm), resulting in PM levels of ~ 4 mg/m3 for flaming and ~ 40 mg/m3 for smoldering conditions. Mice were exposed by inhalation 1 h/day for 2 days, and assessed for lung toxicity at 4 and 24 h after the final exposure. Peat (flaming and smoldering) and eucalyptus (smoldering) smoke elicited significant inflammation (neutrophil influx) in mouse lungs at 4 h with the peat (flaming) smoke causing even greater lung inflammation at 24-h post-exposure. A significant alteration in ventilatory timing was also observed in mice exposed to the peat (flaming) and eucalyptus (flaming and smoldering) smoke immediately after each day of exposure. No responses were seen for exposures to similar concentrations of flaming or smoldering oak smoke. The lung toxicity potencies (neutrophil influx per PM mass) agreed well between the inhalation and previously reported aspiration studies, demonstrating that although flaming smoke contains much less PM mass than smoldering smoke, it is more toxic on a mass basis than smoldering smoke exposure, and that fuel type is also a controlling factor.

Polymer actuators are important components in lab-on-a-chip and micromechanical systems because of the inherent properties that result from their large and fast mechanical responses induced by molecular-level deformations (e.g., isomerization). They typically exhibit bending movements via asymmetric contraction or expansion with respect to changes in environmental conditions. To enhance the mechanical properties of actuators, a strain gradient should be introduced by regulating the molecular alignment, however, the miniaturization of polymer actuators for microscale systems has raised concerns regarding the complexity of such molecular control. Herein, a novel method for the fabrication of micro-actuators using a simple molecular self-alignment method is presented. Amphiphilic molecules that consist of azobenzene mesogens were located between the hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces, which resulted in a splayed alignment. Thereafter, molecular isomerization on the surface induced a large strain gradient and bending movement of the actuator under ultraviolet-light irradiation. Moreover, the microelectromechanical systems allowed for the variation of the actuator size below the micron scale. The mechanical properties of the fabricated actuators such as the bending direction, maximum angle, and response time were evaluated with respect to their thicknesses and lengths. The derivatives of the polymer actuator microstructure may contribute to the development of novel applications in the micro-robotics field.

Exposure to coarse particulate matter (PM) is associated with lung inflammation and exacerbation of respiratory symptoms in sensitive populations, but the degree to which specific emission sources contribute to these effects is unclear. We examined whether coarse PM samples enriched with diverse sources differentially exacerbate allergic airway responses. Coarse PM was collected weekly (7/2009-6/2010) from urban (G.T. Craig [GTC]) and rural (Chippewa Lake Monitor [CLM]) sites in the Cleveland, Ohio area. Source apportionment results were used to pool GTC filter PM extracts into five samples dominated by traffic, coal, steel (two samples), or road salt sources. Five CLM samples were prepared from corresponding weeks. Control non-allergic and house dust mite (HDM)-allergic Balb/cJ mice were exposed by oropharyngeal aspiration to 100 μg coarse GTC or CLM, control filter extract, or saline only, and responses were examined 2 d after PM exposures. In allergic mice, CLM traffic, CLM road salt and all GTC samples except steel-1 significantly increased airway responsiveness to methacholine (MCh) compared with control treatments. In non-allergic mice, CLM traffic, CLM steel-2 and all GTC samples except coal significantly increased bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) neutrophils, while only CLM traffic PM increased eosinophils in allergic mice. In non-allergic mice, CLM coal PM increased BALF interleukin (IL)-13 and GTC steel-1 PM increased TNF-α levels. These results demonstrate that equal masses of GTC and CLM coarse PM enriched with a variety of sources exacerbate allergic airway disease. Greater PM concentrations at the urban GTC site signify a greater potential for human health effects.

The Aerogel Cherenkov Detector for Cygnus (ACD/C) is a time-dependent, x-ray spectral detector that uses SiO2 aerogels spanning an index of refraction (n = 1.02–1.07) corresponding to a 1.1–2.3 MeV x-ray energy threshold. The ACD/C was developed for pulsed power x-ray sources like Cygnus located at the Nevada National Site and Mercury located at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). Aerogels sit between the measurement capabilities of gas (>2 MeV) and solids such as fused silica (>0.3 MeV). The detector uses an aluminum converter to Compton scatter incoming x-rays and create relativistic electrons, which produce Cherenkov light in an aerogel or a fused silica medium. The ACD/C was fielded at the NRL when Mercury was tuned to produce up to 4.8 MeV endpoint bremsstrahlung. Despite a high radiation and electromagnetic interference background, the ACD/C was able to achieve high signal over noise across five aerogel densities and fused silica, including a signal to noise for a 1.1 MeV aerogel threshold. Previous experiments at Cygnus observed a signal that was comparable to the noise (1×) at the same threshold. The ACD/C observed time-resolved rise and fall times for different energy thresholds of the photon spectrum. Monte Carlo simulations of the ACD/C’s aerogel response curves were folded with a simulation of Mercury’s photon energy spectrum and agree within the error to the observed result.

Fusion reaction history and ablator areal density measurements for Inertial Confinement Fusion experiments at the National Ignition Facility are currently conducted using the Gamma Reaction History diagnostic (GRH_6m). Future Gas Cherenkov Detectors (GCDs) will ultimately provide ∼100x more sensitivity, reduce the effective temporal response from ∼100 to ∼10 ps, and lower the energy threshold from 2.9 to 1.8 MeV, relative to GRH_6m. The first phase toward next generation GCDs consisted of inserting the existing coaxial GCD-3 detector into a reentrant well which puts it within 4 m of the implosion. Reaction history and ablator gamma measurement results from this Phase I are discussed here. These results demonstrate viability for the follow-on Phases of (II) the use of a revolutionary new pulse-dilation photomultiplier tube to improve the effective measurement bandwidth by >10x relative to current PMT technology; and (III) the design of a NIF-specific "Super" GCD which will be informed by the assessment of the radiation background environment within the well described here.

In recent years, investigations into the biochemistry of insect-associated bacteria have increased. When combined with analytical dereplication processes, these studies provide a powerful strategy to identify structurally and/or biologically novel compounds. Non-ribosomally synthesized cyclic peptides have a broad bioactivity spectrum with high medicinal potential. Here, we report the discovery of three new cyclic tripeptides: natalenamides A&ndash, C (compounds 1&ndash, 3). These compounds were identified from the culture broth of the fungus-growing termite-associated Actinomadura sp. RB99 using a liquid chromatography (LC)/ultraviolet (UV)/mass spectrometry (MS)-based dereplication method. Chemical structures of the new compounds (1&ndash, 3) were established by analysis of comprehensive spectroscopic methods, including one-dimensional (1H and 13C) and two-dimensional (1H-1H-COSY, HSQC, HMBC) nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), together with high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESIMS) data. The absolute configurations of the new compounds were elucidated using Marfey&rsquo, s analysis. Through several bioactivity tests for the tripeptides, we found that compound 3 exhibited significant inhibitory effects on 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX)-induced melanin production. The effect of compound 3 was similar to that of kojic acid, a compound extensively used as a cosmetic material with a skin-whitening effect.

In this research, various processing conditions were implemented to enhance the mechanical properties of Al-Si alloys. The silicon content was varied from hypoeutectic (Si-10 wt.%) to eutectic (Si-12.6 wt.%) and hypereutectic (Si-14 wt.%) for the preparation of Al-XSi-3Cu-0.5Fe-0.6 Mg (X = 10&ndash, 14%) alloys using die casting. Subsequently, these alloys were hot-extruded with an optimum extrusion ratio (17:1) at 400 &deg, C to match the output extruded bar to the compressor size. An analysis of the microstructural features along with a chemical compositional analysis were carried out using scanning electron microscope along with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope. The SEM micrographs of the extruded samples displayed cracks in primary Si, and the intermetallic (&beta, Al5FeSi) phase was fragmented accordingly. In addition, the silicon phase was homogenously distributed, and the size remained constant. The mechanical properties of the extruded samples were enhanced by the increase of silicon content, and consequently the ductility decreased. By implementing proper T6 heat treatment parameters, coherent Al2Cu phases were formed in the Al matrix, and the Si phase was gradually increased along with the silicon content. Therefore, high tensile strength was achieved, reaching values for the Al-XSi-3Cu-0.5Fe-0.6Mg (X = 10&ndash, 14%) alloys of 366 MPa, 388 MPa, and 420 MPa, respectively.

Great strides have been made in improving the quality of x-ray radiographs in high energy density plasma experiments, enabled in part by innovations in engineering and manufacturing of integrated circuits and materials. As a consequence, the radiographs of today are filled with a great deal of detail, but few of these features are extracted in a systematic way. Analysis techniques familiar to plasma physicists tend toward brittle 1D lineout or Fourier transform type analyses. The techniques applied to process our data have not kept pace with improvements in the quality of our data. Fortunately, the field of computer vision has a wealth of tools to offer, which have been widely used in industrial imaging and, more recently, adopted in biological imaging. We demonstrate the application of computer vision techniques to the analysis of x-ray radiographs from high energy density plasma experiments, as well as give a brief tutorial on the computer vision techniques themselves. These tools robustly extract 2D contours of shocks, boundaries of inhomogeneities, and secondary flows, thereby allowing for increased automation of analysis, as well as direct and quantitative comparisons with simulations.

Near peak compression, inertial confinement fusion implosions release both deuterium–tritium (DT) fusion gamma rays and neutron induced gamma rays from carbon from the areal density of the remaining ablator shell. The gamma reaction history diagnostic makes a time resolved measurement of both. Across many recent implosions, the carbon gamma ray peak arrives systematically 11 ± 10 ps later compared to DT fusion burn. The timing shift is consistent with the carbon areal density increasing throughout the peak of the fusion burn, implying that the carbon portion of the capsule continues to converge. A model finds that the observed timing shift is consistent with a 4π averaged carbon ablator inward velocity of 80 μm/ns for the contemporary National Ignition Facility implosions. The timing shift is possibly related to the energy balance of the implosion, with the expectation that a high performing, igniting capsule would see the carbon gamma rays arrive before the DT fusion peak.

The Marble campaign on the National Ignition Facility investigates the effect of heterogeneous mix on thermonuclear burn for comparison to a probability distribution function (PDF) burn model. Marble utilizes plastic capsules filled with deuterated plastic foam and a fill gas containing tritium. As the capsules implode, the deuterium in the foam mixes with the tritium gas, and DT neutrons are produced as the shocks compress and heat the mixture. The yield of DT neutrons is dependent on the uniformity of the mix, with more heterogeneous mix producing fewer neutrons. In Marble, the heterogeneity of the mix is controlled by varying the diameter of voids introduced into the foam. The first NIF Marble campaign has been executed in which the Marble capsules were indirectly driven with a single strong shock using NIF hohlraums. The experiments produce a low-convergence, high-ion-temperature implosion. The ratio of DT to DD neutron yield is largely consistent with uniform atomic mix for fine-pore foam, and increases slightly with void diameter, contrary to 1D simulations using the PDF burn model. Recent 3D high-resolution simulations of similar experiments performed on the Omega Laser Facility suggest an explanation.

The advanced radiographic capability located at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) uses high intensity, short pulse lasers to create bright photon sources for diagnosing high energy density experiments. There are radiographic needs for a multi-frame time-resolved MeV gamma diagnostic for experiments on the NIF with sub-nanosecond resolution. A series of experiments demonstrated measurements of MeV x-ray spectra resolved with a time separation of a few nanoseconds through the use of gas Cherenkov detectors. A two-pulse radiographic experiment found a 30% reduction in > 2.8 MeV photon flux compared to the first frame exposure.

The engineered macro-pore foam provides a new way to study thermonuclear burn physics by utilizing capsules containing deuterated (D) foam and filling tritium (T) gas in the engineered macro-pores. The implosion of a thermonuclear capsule filled with an engineered macro-pore foam will be complex due to the interaction of a shock wave with the engineered macro-pores. It is our goal to quantify how substantially complex foam structures affect the shape of shock and bulk shock speed. A cylinder-shape shock tube experiment has been designed and performed at the Omega Laser Facility. In order to examine how a foam structure will affect shock propagation, we performed several tests varying (1) engineered macro-pore size, (2) average foam density, and (3) with/without neopentane (C5H12) gas. X-ray radiographic data indicate that shock speed through engineered macro-pore foams depends strongly on average foam density and less on pore size. Experimental shock propagation data helped guide two numerical simulation approaches: (1) a 2D simulation with homogenizing foams rather than explicitly simulating engineered macro-pores and (2) a 2D toroidal-pore approximation adopting a toroidal-tube geometry to model engineered macro-pores.

Cross-beam energy transfer (CBET) can significantly affect the energy coupling and symmetry of direct-drive implosions. We report on a series of direct-drive shots with 2.1 mm outer diameter capsules conducted on NIF for diagnostic development and calibration in which the wavelength separation ( Δ λ) between the inner and outer cone beams was varied. We observe a strong improvement in performance as Δ λ is applied, with the nuclear yield increasing by up to a factor of 4 ×. Other data including the nuclear bang time and implosion symmetry suggest that increasing Δ λ suppresses CBET and improves both the energy coupling and drive symmetry. These results provide a strong and important benchmark for CBET models applicable to direct-drive ignition designs.

The Marble experimental platform at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) was developed to quantify the influence of heterogeneous mix on fusion burn. The platform utilizes a plastic capsule filled with a deuterated plastic foam of controlled coarseness, with tritium gas filling the voids in the foam. The capsule implosion is driven with x rays generated in an NIF Hohlraum in which the time-dependent symmetry of the implosion can be controlled via dynamic beam phasing. Importantly, the Hohlraum drive conditions can be understood via integrated 2D radiation-hydrodynamic simulations, and capsule implosions can be reliably calculated. After several years of development and experimentation, the NIF Marble platform has become successful and has produced important experimental results. The experimental results, which will be presented in a future publication by the LANL Marble team, provide the first definitive examination of the influence of heterogeneous mix on thermonuclear burn.

The MARBLE project is a novel inertial confinement fusion platform for studying the development of atomic mixing and temperature equilibration in inertial confinement fusion implosions and their impact on thermonuclear burn. Experiments involve the laser-driven implosion of capsules filled with deuterated engineered foams whose pores are filled with a gaseous mixture of hydrogen and tritium. By varying the size of the foam pores, we can study the timescale of the development of atomic mix relative to the development of thermal equilibrium between species. In contrast, previous separated reactant experiments have only provided information on the total amount of mix mass. We report on the series of MARBLE experiments [first reported in Haines et al., Nat. Commun. 11, 544 (2020)] performed on the University of Rochester's OMEGA laser facility and detailed and highly resolved three-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of the implosions. In both the experimental and simulation results, we observe that the reactants do not achieve thermal equilibrium during the course of the implosion except in atomically mixed regions—i.e., that atomic mixing develops faster than thermal equilibration between species. The results suggest that ion temperature variations in the mixture are at least as important as reactant concentration variations for determining the fusion reaction rates.

In a real stereo vision system, the acquired stereo images suffer from varying radiometric changes due to illumination and camera parameter changes. Therefore, we propose an effective matching scheme created by building a content adaptive descriptor. Specifically, the descriptor reflects image contents and its element are adaptively weighted and applied to estimate the correct corresponding pixels based on the entropy energy function even under radiometric changes. For the performance evaluation, the proposed scheme is compared with the state-of-art algorithm using Middlebury and KITTI Vision stereo datasets that have radiometric changes. Specifically, 24 of 71 indoor image pairs in the Middlebury and 3 of 7 outdoor pairs are selected, respectively. Experimental result shows that the proposed method reports 6.23% bad pixel matching on average, but it outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms by reducing around 2% bad pixel matching error, which achieves about 16.5% performance improvement.
