Abstract

We present elemental abundance analysis of high-resolution spectra for five giant stars, deriving Fe, Mg, Al, C, N, O, Si and Ce abundances, and spatially located within the innermost regions of the bulge globular cluster NGC 6522, based on H-band spectra taken with the multi-object APOGEE-north spectrograph from the SDSS-IV Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) survey. Of the five cluster candidates, two previously unremarked stars are confirmed to have second-generation (SG) abundance patterns, with the basic pattern of depletion in C and Mg simultaneous with enrichment in N and Al as seen in other SG globular cluster populations at similar metallicity. } In agreement with the most recent optical studies, the NGC 6522 stars analyzed exhibit (when available) only mild overabundances of the s-process element Ce, contradicting the idea of the NGC 6522 stars being formed from gas enriched by spinstars and indicating that other stellar sources such as massive AGB stars could be the primary intra-cluster medium polluters. Abstract

We report an abundance analysis for the highly r-process-enhanced (r-II) star CS 29497-004, a very metal-poor giant with Teff = 5013K and [Fe/H]=-2.85, whose nature was initially discovered in the course of the HERES project. Our analysis is based on high signal-to-noise, high-resolution (R~75000) VLT/UVES spectra and MARCS model atmospheres under the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium, and obtains abundance measurements for a total of 46 elements, 31 of which are neutron-capture elements. As is the case for the other 25 r-II stars currently known, the heavy-element abundance pattern of CS 29497-004 well-matches a scaled Solar System second peak r-process-element abundance pattern. We confirm our previous detection of Th, and demonstrate that this star does not exhibit an "actinide boost". Uranium is also detected (log e(U) =-2.20+/-0.30), albeit with a large measurement error that hampers its use as a precision cosmo-chronometer. Combining the various elemental chronometer pairs that are available for this star, we derive a mean age of 12.2+/-3.7 Gyr using the theoretical production ratios from waiting-point approximation models (Kratz et al. 2007). We further explore the high-entropy wind model (Farouqi et al. 2010) production ratios arising from different neutron richness of the ejecta (Y_e), and derive an age of 13.7+/-4.4 Gyr for a best-fitting Y_e=0.447. The U/Th nuclei-chronometer is confirmed to be the most resilient to theoretical production ratios and yields an age of 16.5+:-6.6 Gyr. Lead (Pb) is also tentatively detected in CS 29497-004, at a level compatible with a scaled Solar r-process, or with the theoretical expectations for a pure r-process in this star., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Abstract

We report on a chemical-abundance analysis of two very metal-poor horizontal-branch stars in the Milky Way halo: CS 22186-005 ([Fe/H]= -2.70) and CS 30344-033 ([Fe/H] = -2.90). The analysis is based on high-resolution spectra obtained at ESO, with the spectrographs HARPS at the 3.6m telescope, and LIVES at the VLT. We adopted one-dimensional, plane-parallel model atmospheres assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium. We derived elemental abundances for 13 elements for CS 22186-005 and 14 elements for CS 30344-033. This study is the first abundance analysis of CS 30344-033. CS 22186-005 has been analyzed previously, but we report here the first measurement of nickel (Ni; Z = 28) for this star, based on twenty-two Nit lines ([Ni/Fe] = 0.21 +/- 0.02); the measurement is significantly-below the mean found for most metal-poor stars. Differences of up to 0.5 dex in [Ni/Fe] ratios were determined by different authors for the same type of stars in the literature, which means that it is not yet possible to conclude that there is a real intrinsic scatter in the [Ni/Fe] ratios. For the other elements for which we obtained estimates, the abundance patterns in these two stars match the Galactic trends defined by giant and turnoff stars well. This confirms the value of horizontal branch stars as tracers of the chemical properties of stellar populations in the Galaxy. Our radial velocities measurements for CS 22186-005 differ from previously published measurements by more than the expected statistical errors. More measurements of the radial velocity of this star are encouraged to confirm or 'refute its radial velocity variability.

Abstract

Moderately r-process-enriched stars (r-I) are at least four times as common as those that are greatly enriched in r-process elements (r-II), and the abundances in their atmospheres are important tools for obtaining a better understanding of the nucleosynthesis processes responsible for the origin of the elements beyond the iron peak. The main aim of this work is to derive abundances for a sample of seven metal-poor stars with classified as r-I stars, to understand the role of these stars for constraining the astrophysical nucleosynthesis event(s) that is(are) responsible for the production of the r-process, and to investigate whether they differ, in any significant way, from the r-II stars. We carried out a detailed abundance analysis based on high-resolution spectra obtained with the VLT/UVES spectrograph. The OSMARCS LTE 1D model atmosphere grid was employed, along with the spectrum synthesis code Turbospectrum. We have derived abundances of light elements Li, C, and N, alpha-elements, odd-Z elements, iron-peak elements, and the trans-iron elements from the first peak, the second peak, the third peak, and the actinides regions. The results are compared with values for these elements for r-II and normal very and extremely metal-poor stars reported in the literature, ages based on radioactive chronometry are explored using different models, and a number of conclusions about the r-process and the r-I stars are presented. Abstract

We have used high-resolution, high-S/N ratio spectra from the UVES spectrograph at the ESO VLT telescope. Long-term radial-velocity measurements and broad-band photometry allow us to determine improved orbital elements and stellar parameters for both components. We use OSMARCS 1D models and the {{\scshape turbospectrum}} spectral synthesis code to determine the abundances of Li, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co and Ni. We also use the CO$^5$BOLD model atmosphere code to compute the 3D abundance corrections, especially for Li and O. We find a metallicity of [Fe/H]$\sim -3.6$ for both stars, using 1D models with 3D corrections of $\sim -0.1$ dex from averaged 3D models. We determine the oxygen abundance from the near-UV OH bands; the 3D corrections are large, -1 and -1.5 dex for the secondary and primary respectively, and yield [O/Fe] $\sim 0.8$, close to the high-quality results obtained from the [OI] 630 nm line in metal-poor giants. Other [$\alpha$/Fe] ratios are consistent with those measured in other dwarfs and giants with similar [Fe/H], although Ca and Si are somewhat low ([X/Fe]$\la 0$). Other element ratios follow those of other halo stars. The Li abundance of the primary star is consistent with the Spite plateau, but the secondary shows a lower abundance; 3D corrections are small. The Li abundance in the primary star supports the extension of the {{\em Spite Plateau}} value at the lowest metallicities, without any decrease. The low abundance in the secondary star could be explained by endogenic Li depletion, due to its cooler temperature. If this is not the case, another, yet unknown mechanism may be causing increased scatter in A(Li) at the lowest metallicities., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract

Extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars preserve a fossil record of the composition of the ISM when the Galaxy formed. It is crucial, however, to verify whether internal mixing has modified their surface. We aim to understand the CNO abundance variations found in some, but not all EMP field giants analysed earlier. Mixing beyond the first dredge-up of standard models is required, and its origin needs clarification.The 12C/13C ratio is the most robust diagnostic of deep mixing, because it is insensitive to the adopted stellar parameters and should be uniformly high in near-primordial gas. We have measured 12C and 13C abundances in 35 EMP giants from high-quality VLT/UVES spectra. Correlations with other abundance data are used to study the depth of mixing.The 12C/13C ratio is found to correlate with [C/Fe] (and Li/H), and clearly anti-correlate with [N/Fe]. Evidence for such deep mixing is observed in giants above log L/Lsolar = 2.6, brighter than in less metal-poor stars, but matching the bump in the luminosity function in both cases. Three of the mixed stars are also Na-and Al-rich, another signature of deep mixing, but signatures of the ON cycle are not clearly seen in these stars. Extra mixing processes clearly occur in luminous RGB stars. The Na-and Al-rich giants could be AGB stars themselves, but an inhomogeneous early ISM or pollution from a binary companion remain possible alternatives (abridged)., (1) GEPI, Observatoire de Paris-Meudon, (2) GRAAL, Univ. Abstract

The active star-forming region W33B is a source of OH and H2O maser emission located in distinct zones around the central object. The aim was to obtain the complete Stokes pattern of polarised OH maser emission, to trace its variability and to investigate flares and long-term variability of the H2O maser and evolution of individual emission features. Observations in the OH lines at a wavelength of 18 cm were carried out on the Nan\c{c}ay radio telescope (France) at a number of epochs in 2008--2014; H2O line observations (long-term monitoring) at a wavelength of 1.35 cm were performed on the 22-metre radio telescope of the Pushchino Radio Astronomy Observatory (Russia) between 1981 and 2014. We have observed strong variability of the emission features in the main 1665- and 1667-MHz OH lines as well as in the 1612-MHz satellite line. Zeeman splitting has been detected in the 1665-MHz OH line at 62 km/s and in the 1667-MHz line at 62 and 64 km/s. The magnetic field intensity was estimated to be from 2 to 3 mG. The H2O emission features form filaments, chains with radial-velocity gradients, or more complicated structures including large-scale ones. Long-term observations of the hydroxyl maser in the W33B region have revealed narrowband polarised emission in the 1612-MHz line with a double-peak profile characteristic of Type IIb circumstellar masers. The 30-year monitoring of the water-vapour maser in W33B showed several strong flares of the H2O line. The observed radial-velocity drift of the H2O emission features suggests propagation of an excitation wave in the masering medium with a gradient of radial velocities.
