Abstract

More and more uses and applications are being given to local climate zone (LCZ) maps, which describe the structure of the urban and semi-urban areas. Among others, it is worth highlighting its use in studies of urban heat islands (UHI), sustainability and urban energy balance. Even if the classes are well described in the literature, it is difficult to estimate the general precision of these classification maps because the classification is highly dependent of the urban typology of the city under study. However, LCZ maps represent a reference in the field of urban climatology. This research work aims to make use of these maps to explain the strong influence of LCZ classes on land surface temperature (LST) and, consequently, on air temperature (AT). This kind of investigations will help us to explain the outliers observed in previous work between LST and AT at specific locations in the city of Strasbourg for the period 2012–2019. The LST data were obtained from the thermal infrared data of both ASTER (with 90-m spatial resolution and 16-days temporal resolution) and MODIS satellite (with 1-km spatial resolution and daily revisit period). The reference ATs were obtained from different field measurement provided by a huge network of meteorological stations distributed in the city of Strasbourg. The comparison of measured ATs and remote LSTs provide the opportunity to thoroughly evaluate the relationship between these two parameters both during the day and night, for different land covers and for different times of the year. Finally, UHI maps of Strasbourg for every season are presented.

Abstract

The increase in urbanization of cities coupled with some effects of climate change is leading to the emergence of urban microclimates. The rising temperatures in cities create the phenomenon known as Urban Heat Island (UHI). This is a difference between the temperature of urban and rural areas that intensifies more during the night and varies according to the season of the year. This paper focuses on the estimation of the UHI and its variations in and around the city of Strasbourg. To this end, thermal remote sensing data from different satellite has been used to isolate and analyse this phenomenon, specifically, Land Surface Temperatures (LSTs) provided by ASTER and MODIS. The LST provided by these sensors has been compared to air temperatures of the last 15 years from meteorological stations distributed throughout the city that have served as ground truth. Forty-seven meteorological stations spread throughout the area of interest provided measurements of air humidity and temperature. This valuable data base has allowed the assessment of the correlations between LST from satellite and ground truth air temperature. Based on satellite data resampled at different spatial units, this work led to the creation of the first UHI map of Strasbourg.

Abstract

Les différences d’humidité entre domaines urbain et rural ont été analysées pour la ville de Strasbourg (France, 48.583° N, 7.745° E), à partir des données horaires de trois stations météorologiques sur une période de huit ans (2011-2018). Notre attention s’est focalisée sur les différences d’humidité relative et de pression partielle en vapeur d’eau de deux stations situées en ville (représentatives d’un parc et d’un quartier urbain) comparées à une référence rurale. L’humidité relative traduit nettement les spécificités des différents sites, ne serait-ce qu’au niveau des moyennes annuelles : l’îlot de sécheresse urbain (ISU) est quasiment permanent, avec un pic d’intensité en été et la nuit. Spatialement, cette intensité peut être modulée par la présence de végétation ainsi que par l’îlot de chaleur urbain (ICU). Cependant, la ville peut aussi parfois devenir un îlot d’humidité urbain (IHU) couplé à un îlot de fraicheur urbain (IFU). Ce couplage est plus fréquent en hiver et augmente avec la présence de végétation. Pour la pression partielle en vapeur d’eau, les spécificités des sites apparaissent surtout au niveau mensuel et horaire : la ville alterne entre un IHU en hiver (ou la nuit) et un ISU en été (ou en journée). La fréquence des ISU intenses (Δe< -0,5 hPa) est nettement plus faible dans le parc (18,7 %) que dans le quartier (28,3 %), ce qui prouve que la ville ne forme pas forcément toujours un ensemble homogène du point de vue de la vapeur d’eau : dans 30 % des cas, on a même des situations où le parc et le quartier sont classés dans des catégories opposées.

Abstract

The thermo-radiative model LASER/F aims at computing the energy balance of a district. The components of the urban fabric are represented in vectorial 3D and the scene is fragmented into small elementary triangular facets of a few square meters. The physical processes related to the energy balance are solved for each facet. The operational framework of the model is briefly presented in this paper, as well as the numerical procedures and the physical concepts used for the different types of urban elements. The energy balance of a neighborhood of Strasbourg (France) is then simulated. The results are compared with experimental field measurements and the model accuracy is evaluated with a complete set of statistical indices. The model obtains globally a good level of performance for almost all variables, except the latent heat flux.

Abstract

Thermal remote sensing has become widely used to monitor and study Urban Heat Island (UHI) by the use of satellite Land Surface Temperature (LST) data, and the Local Climate Zone (LCZ) scheme has established itself as the standard for assessing Urban Heat Island Intensity (UHII). A lot of research on LST-LCZ relationship has been done, but mainly in flat terrain. Some studies on UHI in mountainous areas have been conducted, but most of them considered the combined effect of land use/land cover and topography on temperature. To the best of our knowledge no study has been carried out on the LST-LCZ relationship in a complex topography area after removing the topography effect. This paper presents a methodology for assessing the impact of the urban structure on UHII in Beirut, a coastal city with heterogenous urban morphology and complex topography. It was concluded that the main urban variables which contribute to the spatial variability of topographically normalized LST are, in decreasing order of relative importance, the built-up ratio, the pervious surface ratio, the buildings' mean height and mean surface area. The difference in average temperatures between high-rise densely built LCZs and mostly pervious zones exceeded two degrees at nighttime.

Abstract

On 20 March 2015 a partial solar eclipse occurred at Strasbourg, France, with an obscuration of 72.4%. The consequences of this event were observed under optimal weather conditions with micrometeorological instruments. Among these, the global radiation deficit can be estimated to be of 1.724MJ per horizontal square meter. A modification of the solar spectrum with a greater proportion of photosynthetically active radiation was also observed. The extinction of the solar radiation resulted in a reduction of the net radiation, a sharp decrease in the surface temperatures and a change in all surface heat fluxes.

Abstract

International audience; Urban leaf area measurement is crucial to properly determining the effect of urban trees on micro-climate regulation, heat island effect, building cooling, air quality improvement, and ozone formation. Previous works on the leaf area measurement have mainly focused on the stand level, although the presence of individual trees is more common than forests in urban areas. The only feasible ways for an operational non-destructive leaf area measurement, namely, optical indirect methods, are mostly limited in urban areas because light path is constantly intercepted by surrounding buildings or other objects. A terrestrial laser scanner (TLS), which can extract an individual tree by using its unique distance information, provides a possibility for indirectly measuring the leaf area index (LAI) in urban areas. However, indirect LAI measurement theory, which uses the cosine of an observation zenith angle for path-length correction, is incompatible for an individual tree because the representative projected area of LAI changes while the observation zenith angle changes, thus making the results incomparable and ambiguous. Therefore, we modified a path length distribution model for the leaf area measurement of an individual tree by replacing the traditional cosine path length correction for a continuous canopy with real path length distribution. We reconstructed the tree crown envelope from a TLS point cloud and calculated a real path length distribution through laser pulse-envelope intersections. Consequently, leaf area density was separated from the path length distribution model for leaf area calculation. Comparisons with reference measurement for an individual tree showed that the TLS-derived leaf area using the path length distribution is insensitive to the scanning resolution and agrees well with an allometric measurement with an overestimation from 5 m 2 to 18 m 2 (3-10%, respectively). Results from different stations are globally consistent, and using a weighted mean for different stations by sample numbers further improves the universality and efficiency of the proposed method. Further automation of the proposed method can facilitate a rapid and operational leaf area extraction of an individual tree for urban climate modeling.

Abstract

LASER/F is a physical thermo-radiative model designed to simulate the 3D surface radiative and energy exchanges in urban environments, which can provide, among other physical variables, detailed distribution of building surface temperature over time. This paper aims at presenting in details the algorithms behind the estimation of the surface temperature and assessment results. The assessment relies on a set of in-situ measurements acquired over the facade of a large building on the university campus of Strasbourg (France) during a continuous 36 h period in July 2016, combining a thermal camera FLIR SC655, a non-imaging multi-spectral thermal radiometer Cimel Climat and two albedometers (Kipp & Zonen). The adequate model settings are defined following a preliminary sensitivity analysis of LASER/F aiming at quantifying the impact of facade material structure and properties on final results, and at finding the proper balance between accuracy and computation time. LASER/F is then used to model the building surface temperature kinetic over the data acquisition period. Results demonstrate the ability of LASER/F to adequately reproduce the behavior and magnitude of building surface temperature (RMSE 1.31 °C), even with a coarse 3D representation of building geometry and surrounding environment, and highlight the need for accurate description of building material properties.

Abstract

3D models of tree geometry are important for numerous studies, such as for urban planning or agricultural studies. In climatology, tree models can be necessary for simulating the cooling effect of trees by estimating their evapotranspiration. The literature shows that the more accurate the 3D structure of a tree is, the more accurate microclimate models are. This is the reason why, since 2013, we have been developing an algorithm for the reconstruction of trees from terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) data, which we call TreeArchitecture. Meanwhile, new promising algorithms dedicated to tree reconstruction have emerged in the literature. In this paper, we assess the capacity of our algorithm and of two others -PlantScan3D and SimpleTree- to reconstruct the 3D structure of trees. The aim of this reconstruction is to be able to characterize the geometric complexity of trees, with different heights, sizes and shapes of branches. Based on a specific surveying workflow with a TLS, we have acquired dense point clouds of six different urban trees, with specific architectures, before reconstructing them with each algorithm. Finally, qualitative and quantitative assessments of the models are performed using reference tree reconstructions and field measurements. Based on this assessment, the advantages and the limits of every reconstruction algorithm are highlighted. Anyway, very satisfying results can be reached for 3D reconstructions of tree topology as well as of tree volume.

© 2018 The Authors Urban trees play a key role in mitigating environmental problems in cities, but they often face harsh environmental conditions as they generally grow in sealed soils that have small rooting space and low water availability. In this context, rapid monitoring and assessment of tree health status is critical to maintain urban trees and secure the provisioning of urban ecosystem services. Across three European cities we selected 187 Tilia tomentosa trees growing under following planting conditions: (i) sealed, trees planted in small soil pits or strips surrounded by highly sealed surfaces (concrete, pavement or asphalt); and (ii) unsealed, trees planted in roomy soil surfaces (e.g. parks). We measured leaf reflectance and fluorescence and derived a set of optical traits from the measurements. We examined whether these non-destructively measured optical traits differ between planting conditions and whether they correlate with leaf functional traits, e.g. specific leaf area (SLA), leaf water content (LWC) and leaf water per area (LWA). Compared to the unsealed trees, sealed trees showed decreased SLA and LWC while increased LWA. Leaf optical traits differed between the unsealed and sealed trees. Highly sealed soils accelerated leaf senescence of the sealed trees compared to the unsealed trees, embodied in the temporal trend of optical traits. Sealed planting conditions negatively affect urban tree health status and phenology. These negative effects can be estimated by leaf optical traits, demonstrating the great potential of optical traits in assessing tree health status. Une analyse de la dynamique temporelle et de la distribution spatiale de l’îlot de chaleur urbain (ICU) strasbourgeois a été menée à l’aide d’un réseau de stations météorologiques réparties sur l’ensemble du territoire de l’agglomération strasbourgeoise. L’importante variabilité temporelle de l’ICU est illustrée non seulement à travers son comportement thermique journalier, mais également par le biais des fortes différences d’intensité selon les saisons et les types de temps. Favorisé lors de vents faibles et d’ensoleillement important, l’ICU se montre particulièrement intense durant les belles journées estivales, les moyennes pouvant localement atteindre un gain de cinq degrés lors du paroxysme nocturne. Concernant l’aspect spatial, les disparités entre stations soulignent une hétérogénéité de l’ICU essentiellement liée à la variabilité intrinsèque du milieu urbain. L’analyse statistique a ainsi mis en évidence le rôle de plusieurs paramètres morphologiques et d’occupation du sol, et par conséquent justifie pleinement la mise en place d’une classification en Local Climate Zones (LCZ) de l’Eurométropole de Strasbourg. La végétation apparaît comme étant un facteur de mitigation prééminent, notamment lorsqu’elle est présente de manière notable dans des zones densément bâties et fortement minéralisées. Concernant les paramètres relevant de la géométrie urbaine, les intensités moyennes d’ICU les plus élevées sont systématiquement mesurées dans les zones les plus densément bâties. Une nouvelle méthodologie de cartographie de l’ICU se basant sur les paramètres sous-jacents des LCZ est proposée. Cette carte permet l’obtention de valeurs pertinentes d’intensité de l’ICU en tout point du territoire.

Abstract

In the 21st century, urban areas undergo specific climatic conditions like urban heat islands which frequency and intensity increase over the years. Towards the understanding and the monitoring of these conditions, vegetation effects on urban climate are studied. It appears that a natural phenomenon, the evapotranspiration of trees, generates a cooling effect in urban environment. In this work, a 3D microclimate model is used to quantify the evapotranspiration of trees in relation with their architecture, their physiology and the climate. These three characteristics are determined with field measurements and data processing. Based on point clouds acquired with terrestrial laser scanner (TLS), the 3D reconstruction of the tree wood architecture is performed. Then the 3D reconstruction of leaves is carried out from the 3D skeleton of vegetative shoots and allometric statistics. With the aim of extending the simulation on several trees simultaneously, it is necessary to apply the 3D reconstruction process on each tree individually. However, as well for the acquisition as for the processing, the 3D reconstruction approach is time consuming. Mobile laser scanners could provide point clouds in a faster way than static TLS, but this implies a lower point density. Also the processing time could be shortened, but under the assumption that a coarser 3D model is sufficient for the simulation. In this context, the criterion of level of details and accuracy of the tree 3D reconstructed model must be studied. In this paper first tests to assess their impact on the determination of the evapotranspiration are presented.
