Abstract: International audience; The origin of the random telegraph signal (RTS) observed in semiconductors-based electronic devices is still subject to debates. In this work, by means of atomistic simulations, typical clusters of defects as could be obtained after irradiation or implantation are studied as a possible cause for RTS. It is shown that: (i) a cluster of defects is highly metastable, (ii) it introduces several electronic states in the band gap, (iii) it has an electronic cross section much higher than the one of point defects. These three points can simultaneously explain why an electronhole generation rate can switch with time, while respecting the experimental measurement.

Abstract: It was shown recently that the Fe magnetization reversal in the Fe/MnAs/GaAs(001) epitaxial system, attained by temperature control of the regular stripe pattern of the MnAs ?- and ?-phases, can also be driven by an ultrashort optical laser pulse. In the present time-resolved scattering experiment, we address the dynamics of the MnAs ?/? self-organized stripe pattern induced by a 100 fs optical laser pulse, using as a probe the XUV radiation from the FERMI free-electron laser. We observe a loss in the diffraction intensity from the ordered ?/? stripes that occurs at two characteristic timescales in the range of ~10-12 and ~10-10 s. We associate the first intensity drop with ultrafast electron-lattice energy exchange processes within the laser-MnAs interaction volume and the second with thermal diffusion towards the MnAs/GaAs interface. With the support of model calculations, the observed dynamics are interpreted in terms of the formation of a laterally homogeneous MnAs overlayer, the thickness of which evolves in time, correlating the MnAs microstructure dynamics with the Fe magnetization response.

Abstract: The advent of free-electron laser (FEL) sources delivering two synchronized pulses of different wavelengths (or colours) has made available a whole range of novel pump–probe experiments. This communication describes a major step forward using a new configuration of the FERMI FEL-seeded source to deliver two pulses with different wavelengths, each tunable independently over a broad spectral range with adjustable time delay. The FEL scheme makes use of two seed laser beams of different wavelengths and of a split radiator section to generate two extreme ultraviolet pulses from distinct portions of the same electron bunch. The tunability range of this new two-colour source meets the requirements of double-resonant FEL pump/FEL probe time-resolved studies. We demonstrate its performance in a proof-of-principle magnetic scattering experiment in Fe–Ni compounds, by tuning the FEL wavelengths to the Fe and Ni 3p resonances., Two-colour X-ray free electron laser is a powerful tool for pump–probe measurements, but currently constrained by limited tunability. Here, Ferrari et al. develop a configuration that allows tuning both the pump and the probe to specific electronic excitations, providing element selectivity.

Abstract: We present the characterization of Mg-Co-Zr tri-layer stacks by using x-ray fluorescence induced by x-ray standing waves, both in the grazing incidence (GI) and grazing exit (GE) modes. The introduction of a slit in the direction of the detector improves the angular resolution by a factor 2 and significantly the sensitivity of the technique for the chemical characterization of the buried interfaces. By observing the intensity variations of the Mg Kalpha and Co Lalpha characteristic emissions as a function of the incident (GI mode) or detection (GE mode) angle, we show that the interfaces of the Si/[Mg/Co/Zr] x30 multilayer are abrupt, whereas in the Si/[Mg/Zr/Co] x30 multilayer a strong intermixing occurs at the Co-on-Zr interfaces. The explanation of this opposite behaviour of the Co-on-Zr and Zr-on-Co interfacesis given by the calculation of the mixing enthalpies of the Co-Mg, Co-Zr and Mg-Zr systems, which shows that the Co-Zr system presents anegative value and the two others positive values. Abstract: International audience; We study Cr/Sc-based multilayer mirrors designed to work in the water window range using hard and soft x-ray reflectivity as well as x-ray fluorescence enhanced by standing waves. Samples differ by the elemental composition of the stack, the thickness of each layer, and the order of deposition. This paper mainly consists of two parts. In the first part, the optical performances of different Cr/Sc-based multilayers are reported, and in the second part, we extend further the characterization of the structural parameters of the multilayers, which can be extracted by comparing the experimental data with simulations. The methodology is detailed in the case of Cr/B4C/Sc sample for which a three-layer model is used. Structural parameters determined by fitting reflectivity curve are then introduced as fixed parameters to plot the x-ray standing wave curve, to compare with the experiment, and confirm the determined structure of the stack.

A combined study using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy and first-principles calculations unveils the structural conformation of substrate-bound phenylene intermediates generated from 1,4-dibromobenzene precursors on Cu(110), showing the stabilizing role of the halogen. The appearance of covalently bonded conjugated structures is followed in real time by fast-XPS measurements (with an acquisition time of 2 s per spectrum and heating rate of 2 K/s), showing that the detaching of phenylene units from the copper substrate and subsequent polymerization occur upon annealing above 460 +/- 10 K.

Abstract: We present the results of the characterization of Mg/Co periodic multilayers and their thermal stability for the EUV range. The annealing study is performed up to a temperature of 400\degree C. Images obtained by scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy clearly show the good quality of the multilayer structure. The measurements of the EUV reflectivity around 25 nm (~49 eV) indicate that the reflectivity decreases when the annealing temperature increases above 300\degreeC. X-ray emission spectroscopy is performed to determine the chemical state of the Mg atoms within the Mg/Co multilayer. Nuclear magnetic resonance used to determine the chemical state of the Co atoms and scanning electron microscopy images of cross sections of the Mg/Co multilayers reveal changes in the morphology of the stack from an annealing temperature of 305\degreee;C. Abstract: International audience; The energy-level alignment across solvated molecule/semiconductor interfaces is a crucial property for the correct functioning of dye-sensitized photoelectrodes, where, following the absorption of solar light, a cascade of interfacial hole/electron transfer processes has to efficiently take place. In light of the difficulty of performing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements at the molecule/solvent/metal–oxide interface, being able to accurately predict the level alignment by first-principles calculations on realistic structural models would represent an important step toward the optimization of the device. In this respect, dye/NiO surfaces, employed in p-type dye-sensitized solar cells, are undoubtedly challenging for ab initio methods and, also for this reason, much less investigated than the n-type dye/TiO2 counterpart. Here, we consider the C343-sensitized NiO surface in water and combine ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations with GW (G0W0) calculations, performed along the MD trajectory to reliably describe the structure and energetics of the interface when explicit solvation and finite temperature effects are accounted for. We show that the differential perturbative correction on the NiO and molecule states obtained at the GW level is mandatory to recover the correct (physical) interfacial energetics, allowing hole transfer from the semiconductor valence band to the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of the dye. Abstract: The resonant magnetic reflectivity of Co/Mg multilayers around the Co L2,3 absorption edge is simulated then measured on a specifically designed sample. The dichroic signal is obtained when making the difference between the two reflectivities measured with the magnetic field applied in two opposite directions parallel to the sample surface. The simulations show that the existence of magnetic dead layers at the interfaces between the Co and Mg layers leads to an important increase of the dichroic signal measured in the vicinity of the third Bragg peak that otherwise should be negligible. The measurements are in agreement with the model introducing 0.25 nm thick dead layers. This is attributed to the Co atoms in contact with the Mg layers and thus we conclude that the Co-Mg interfaces are abrupt from the magnetic point of view., 8 pages

Abstract: International audience; Fluorescent nanohybrids, based on p-extended hydroxyoxophosphole ligands grafted onto ZnO nanoparticles, were designed and studied. The restriction of the intramolecular motions of the organic fluorophore, through either aggregates' formation in solution or processing into thin films, forms highly emissive materials due to a strong Aggregation Induced Emission effect. Theoretical calculations and XPS analyses were performed to analyze the interactions between the organic and inorganic counterparts. Preliminary results on the use of these nanohybrids as solution-processed emissive layers in Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) illustrate their potential for lighting applications.

Abstract: International audience; Self-metalation is one of the most promising synthesis routes to include a single metal atom in a tetrapyrrolic macrocycle in the case of organic frameworks supported by metal surfaces. The molecule-surface interaction may provide the charge transfer and the geometric distortion of the molecular plane that are necessary for metal inclusion, thus mimicking enzymatic metalation mechanisms of porphyrins in biology. However, while the latter process proceeds at room temperature, at a metal surface, instead, the presence of an activation barrier can represent a technical obstacle that cannot be compensated by a higher substrate temperature without affecting the layer integrity. The formation of the intermediate state, the sitting-atop complex that weakens the two N-H bonds in the tetrapyrrole preceding the metal insertion step, can be facilitated in some cases by oxygen pre-adsorption at the supporting metal surface, like in the case of the 2H-TPP/Pd(100) system. In such cases, the activation barrier can be overcome by mild annealing, yielding the formation of desorbing products (hydrogen, water) and of the metalated tetrapyrrole. We show here that the self-metalation of 2H-TPP molecules at the Pd(100) surface can be promoted already at room temperature by the presence of an oxygen gas phase at close-to-ambient conditions via an Eley-Rideal mechanism, resembling the asymmetric interactions available in enzymatic pockets, thus opening the way to novel routes to metalate organic frameworks at surfaces.

Abstract: We present and discuss the role of nanoparticles size and stoichiometry over the local atomic environment of nanostructured VOx films. The samples have been characterized in situ using X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy identifying the stoichiometry-dependent fingerprints of disordered atomic arrangement. In vanadium oxides, the ligand atoms arrange according to a distorted octahedral geometry depending on the oxidation state, e.g. trigonal distortion in V2O3 and tetragonal distortion in bulk VO2. We demonstrate, taking VO2 as a case study, that as a consequence of the nanometric size of the nanoparticles, the original ligands symmetry of the bulk is broken resulting in the coexistence of a continuum of distorted atomic conformations. The resulting modulation of the electronic structure of the nanostructured VOx as a function of the oxygen content reveals a stoichiometry-dependent increase of disorder in the ligands matrix. This work shows the possibility to produce VOx nanostructured films accessing new disordered phases and provides a unique tool to investigate the complex matter.

Abstract: International audience; Protein-polymer conjugates are used to treat several diseases. PEGylation, i.e. the modification with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) is the currently used strategy. However, due to its non-biodegradability, the design of effective and degradable conjugates is of both academic and industry potential. We present the preparation and studies of the activity and stability of novel biodegradable myoglobin-polyphosphoester conjugates. Poly(ethyl ethylene phosphate) (PEEP) is a water-soluble polyphosphoester, which had been reported to be biocompatible and biodegradable. PEEP is a promising candidate as a degradable substitute for the “gold standard” PEG, which can cause long-term effects, as it is not degradable. PEEPylated conjugates with a variable degree of polymer grafting were synthesized, characterized (with online triple detection size exclusion chromatography, mass spectrometry, and gel electrophoresis), and compared with PEGylated analogs. We highlight differences in how the structure, the number, and the length of the polymer influence the properties of the conjugates. Overall, the analyses conducted (including activity assay, calorimetry, and fluorimetry measurements) show that the covalent attachment of the polymer does not irrevocably affect the protein’s features under physiological conditions, suggesting the potential of this new class of polymers for the design of a new generation of fully degradable conjugates.

Abstract: The control of phonon propagation in nanoparticle arrays is one of the new frontiers of nanotechnology, potentially enabling the discovery of materials with unknown functionalities for potential innovative applications. The exploration of the terahertz window appears quite promising as phonons in this range are the leading carriers of heat transport in insulators and their control is the key to implement devices for heat flow management. Unfortunately, this scientific field is still in its infancy and even a basic topic such as the influence of floating nanoparticles on the terahertz phonon propagation of a colloidal suspension still eludes a firm answer. Shedding some light on this topic is the main motivation of the present work, which focuses an Inelastic X-Ray Scattering (IXS) measurements on a dilute suspension of Au nano-spheres in water. Measured spectra showed a non-trivial and unexpected shape displaying multiple inelastic features that, based on a Bayesian inference analysis, we assign to phonon modes propagating throughout the nanoparticle interior. Surprisingly, the spectra bear no evidence of propagating modes, which are known to dominate the spectrum of pure water, owing to the scattering that these modes suffer from the sparse nanoparticles in suspension. In perspective, this finding may inspire simple routes to manipulate high-frequency acoustic propagation in hybrid - liquid and solid- materials.

Abstract: Carbon (C) surface segregation from bulk stabilizes the Fe(0 18 1) vicinal surface by forming a c(3$$\sqrt{2}$$ 2 × $$\sqrt{2}$$ 2 reconstruction with C zig-zag chains oriented at 45° with respect to the iron surface steps. The iron surface electronic states as measured by high resolution ARPES at normal emission with polarized synchrotron radiation split in two peaks that follow distinct energy dispersion curves. One peak follows the dispersion of the carbon superstructure and is photoexcited only when the polarization vector is parallel to the steps, the second peak disperses similarly to the pristine Fe(0 0 1) surface. Such surface electronic structure is robust as it persists even after coating with an Ag overlayer. The robustness of this surface electronic structure and its similarity with that of the clean Fe(0 0 1) surface make this system of interest for magnetic and spintronic properties such as magneto tunnel junctions based on Fe/MgO interface.

Abstract: International audience; Recently synthesized thermoelectric Cu-As-Te glasses have been analyzed by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy, both near-edge (XANES) and in the extended region (EXAFS), in order to shed light on the mechanism at the basis of the huge increase of conductivity, up to five orders of magnitude, that was found with Cu doping. Experimental data have been modeled by means of multiple-scattering calculations. Our model suggests that the experimental results can be interpreted in terms of a small charge-transfer from Te to Cu, leading to an unexpected positive valence for Te. Interestingly, on the basis of these findings, a global picture explaining the enhancement of electrical conductivity with Cu doping can be proposed: electrical conductivity is determined by the holes created in non-bonding Te 5p orbitals (lone pair) by Cu 2 acceptors. The critical parameter to increase electrical conductivity is the number of CuTe bonds that are formed and not simply the number of Cu atoms.

Abstract: International audience; Grafting thiol-bearing molecules at the surface of silver nano-particles (AgNPs) is a successful strategy to tune their optical and antibacterial properties. The capping layer generated from self-assembly of the ligands at the nanoparticle surface determines the range of possible applications of the resulting material. In particular, direct grafting of the thiol heads to surface Ag(I) can occur, with various hybridizations of the S atom, sp versus sp 3. Alternatively, a passivating Ag 2 S layer can form. We make use of S K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and synchrotron-based X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to probe the metal−ligand interface in different thiol-capped AgNPs. The use of cryogenic conditions for XAS analyses reveals a peculiar spectral signature for thiolates chemisorbed on the AgNPs surface, unambiguously distinguished from that of Ag 2 S. Ab initio simulations of XANES spectra and XPS analyses are used to predict the grafting mode, suggesting that different ligand architectures promote slightly different proportions of sp/sp 3 sites, and a dramatic variability in the stability of the nanomaterial that can evolve toward either self-assembly or dissolution of the AgNPs.

Abstract: Ferromagnetic thin films with moderate perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) are known to support weak stripe domains provided film thickness exceeds a critical value. In this work, we performed both an experimental and theoretical investigation of a peculiar phenomenon shown by weak stripe domains: namely, the stripe domains reorientation when a dc magnetic field is applied in the film plane along the direction perpendicular to the stripes axis. We focus on bct α′-Fe8N1−x thin films obtained by N 2 + implantation of α-Fe films epitaxially grown on ZnSe/GaAs(001). By using different ion implantation and heat treatment conditions, we show that it is possible to tune the PMA values. Magnetic force microscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer measurements prove the existence of weak stripe domains at remanence, and of a threshold field for the reorientation of the stripes axis in a transversal field. Using a one-dimensional model of the magnetic stripe domains, where the essential parameter is the maximum canting angle of the stripe magnetization out of the film plane, the various contributions to the magnetic energy can be separately calculated. A linear increase of the reorientation threshold field on the PMA is obtained, in qualitative agreement with experimental data in our Fe–N films, as well as in other thin films with weak stripe domains. Finally, we find that also the rotatable anisotropy field linearly increases as a function of the PMA magnitude.

Abstract: International audience; The crystal structural quality and the strain induced by the substrate strictly impose the magnetic and transport properties of La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) films. In particular, the magnetic anisotropy (MA) of epitaxial LSMO can be finely tuned by varying its thickness and by choosing single crystal substrates with suitable lattice mismatch with the film. Here, we have deposited LSMO films with thicknesses in the 12-50 nm range by pulsed laser deposition on different single crystal substrates inducing either compressive or tensile in-plane strain on the manganites. The epitaxial quality of films was quantified by ω-scans around (002) peak with full-width half-maximum (FWHM) values as low as 0.08° for films on the nearly matched NGO (110) substrate to 1.4° films on high mismatched MgO (001) substrate. As the epitaxial strain in thin-film increases, a significant reduction in metal-insulation transition (MIT) temperature (Tp) was observed. The magnetic properties of the films probed by Kerr magnetometry show that the symmetry of the room temperature MA varies significantly as a function of both strain and thickness. Specifically, we observed pure uniaxial MA on NGO (110) and pure biaxial MA on STO buffered MgO (001), whereas a spin reorientation from uniaxial in-plane to out-of-plane on LSAT (001) and uniaxial to nearly isotropic in-plane on STO (001) substrate as the film thickness is increased. We provide an efficient tool to tune the MA according to the specific spintronic application targeted.

Abstract: International audience; We characterize nano-scale periodic Sc/Mg two-layer, Sc/Mg/Co tri-layers and Sc/Co/Mg/Co quadri-layer designed as dispersive elements for x-ray spectroscopy in the nitrogen K range (390 eV). The samples are prepared by magnetron sputtering with Mg and Sc layers being a few nanometers thick and Co layers being of sub-nanometric thickness. We apply non-destructive (x-ray reflectivity and x-ray fluorescence in standing wave mode) and destructive (transmission electron microscopy) techniques to obtain a relevant description of the deposited stacks. It turns out that a strong interdiffusion takes place in the two-layer leading to poor reflective properties. Interdiffusion also occurs in the tri-layers and quadri-layer but between the Sc and Co layers. These systems can be considered as periodic ScCo/Mg two-layers with well-defined layers. As a consequence, the Sc/Co/Mg/Co multilayer is found interesting to use for spectroscopy as a reflectance of 32% is expected in the N K range in the water window range.

Abstract: Bacteria use small molecules called siderophores to scavenge iron. Siderophore-Fe3+ complexes are recognised by outer-membrane transporters and imported into the periplasm in a process dependent on the inner-membrane protein TonB. The siderophore enterobactin is secreted by members of the family Enterobacteriaceae, but many other bacteria including Pseudomonas species can use it. Here, we show that the Pseudomonas transporter PfeA recognises enterobactin using extracellular loops distant from the pore. The relevance of this site is supported by in vivo and in vitro analyses. We suggest there is a second binding site deeper inside the structure and propose that correlated changes in hydrogen bonds link binding-induced structural re-arrangements to the structural adjustment of the periplasmic TonB-binding motif., Bacteria produce small iron-binding molecules called siderophores, which are recognised by outer-membrane transporters. Here, the authors show that a Pseudomonas transporter recognises the siderophore enterobactin using extracellular loops distant from the pore, and propose that there is a second binding site deeper inside the structure.

Abstract: Pd/Y multilayers are high reflectance mirrors designed to work in the 7.5-11 nm wavelength range. Samples, prepared by magnetron sputtering, are deposited with or without B4C barrier layers located at the interfaces of Pd and Y layers to reduce interdiffusion, which is expected by calculating mixing enthalpy of Pd and Y. Grazing incident x-ray reflectometry is used to characterize these multilayers. B4C barrier layers are found effective on reducing the Pd-Y interdiffusion. Details of the composition of the multilayers are revealed by hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy under x-ray standing waves effect. It consists in measuring the photoemission intensity from samples that perform an angular scan in the region corresponding to the multilayer period and the incident photon energy according to the Bragg law. The experimental result indicates that Pd does not chemically react with B nor C at the Pd-B4C interfaces while Y does at the Y-B4C interfaces. The formation of Y-B or Y-C chemical compound can be the reason why the interfaces are stabilized. By comparing the experimentally obtained angular variation of the characteristic photoemission with the theoretical calculation, the depth distribution of each component element can be interpreted., 13 pages, 8 figures, 1 tables, 19 references

This article is distributed under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) License, Spintronics exploits the magnetoresistance effects to store or sense the magnetic information. Since the magnetoresistance strictly depends on the magnetic anisotropy of a system, it is fundamental to set a defined anisotropy to the system. Here, we investigate half-metallic La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 thin films by means of vectorial Magneto-Optical Kerr Magnetometry and found that they exhibit pure biaxial magnetic anisotropy at room temperature if grown onto a MgO (001) substrate with a thin SrTiO3 buffer. In this way, we can avoid unwanted uniaxial magnetic anisotropy contributions that may be detrimental for specific applications. Abstract: International audience; V/Sc multilayer has been developed as a promising candidate for the water window region working near both the Sc-L edge (3.11 nm) and the V-L edge (2.42 nm). To meet the application requirements, its thermal and temporal stability were studied. A series of V/Sc multilayers with a d-spacing ranging from 1.59 to 1.62 nm and a number of bilayers of 100 and 400 was fabricated. Different samples were annealed at temperatures from 100 to 300 °C. Grazing incidence X-ray reflectivity and soft X-ray (SXR) reflectivity measurements showed that the multilayer structure and reflectivity remain mostly unchanged at 100 °C. An obvious deterioration started at 200 °C, while the SXR reflectivity drops close to zero at 250 °C. The multilayer structure completely broke down at 300 °C. Both X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy measurements demonstrated a severe crystallization occurring at 250 °C. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy measurements have further confirmed a significant elemental mixture occurring after 250 °C annealing. The severe intermixing and polycrystallization resulted in the degradation of the multilayer structure. On the other hand, the V/Sc multilayer is relatively stable after half year storage in air environment showing a slight decrease of SXR reflectivity from 18.4% to 16.5%.

Abstract: International audience; The resonant eigenmodes of a nitrogen-implanted iron α'-FeN characterized by weak stripe domains are investigated by Brillouin light scattering and broadband ferromagnetic resonance experiments, assisted by micromagnetic simulations. The spectrum of the dynamic eigenmodes in the presence of the weak stripes is very rich and two different families of modes can be selectively detected using different techniques or different experimental configurations. Attention is paid to the evolution of the mode frequencies and spatial profiles under the application of an external magnetic field, of variable intensity, in the direction parallel or transverse to the stripes. The different evolution of the modes with the external magnetic field is accompanied by a distinctive spatial localization in specific regions, such as the closure domains at the surface of the stripes and the bulk domains localized in the inner part of the stripes. The complementarity of BLS and FMR techniques, based on different selection rules, is found to be a fruitful tool for the study of the wealth of localized magnetic excitations generally found in nanostructures.

Abstract: International audience; Photoelectron Spectroscopy (PS) and Near-Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy have been used to investigate the occupied and empty density of states of biphenylene films of different thicknesses, deposited onto a Cu(111) crystal. The obtained results have been compared to previous gas phase spectra and single molecule Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations to get insights into the possible modification of the molecular electronic structure in the film induced by the adsorption on a surface. Furthermore, NEXAFS measurements allowed characterizing the variation of the molecular arrangement with the film thickness and helped to clarify the substrate-molecule interaction.

Abstract: We use hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy combined with x-ray standing waves to characterize a series of Pd/Y multilayers designed to work in the 7.5-11 nm wavelength range. The samples, prepared by magnetron sputtering, are deposited either with or without nitrogen introduced in the sputtering gas. The aimed period of the samples is 4 nm. The experiments consist in obtaining the core level spectra of the various elements for a series of grazing angles. The angular scan is made in the range given by the Bragg law, the multilayer period and the incident photon energy. Given the period of the multilayer and the presence of a 2.5 nm-thick B4C capping layer, the photon energy is chosen to be 10 keV in order to probe the first 5-6 periods of the stack. Thus the Bragg angle is a little less than 1°. Rotating the sample enables putting the nodes of the electric field at some particular location of the stack, thus to make the excitation depth-selective, probing one interface or another or the center of one given layer. The changes of the chemical shift in the Pd 2p and 3d, Y 2p and 3d, O 1s, N 1s, C 1s and B 1s as a function of the angle, that is to say as a function of the location in the stack will give information about the possible interfacial process taking place in the Pd/Y multilayers.

Abstract: Molecular bilayers made up of a donor-acceptor blend in contact with the metal and capped with a single-component layer show a tunable energy level alignment at both metal-organic and organic-organic interfaces. To ensure sharp heteromolecular interfaces, a contact layer is formed by a stable blend of pentacene (PEN) and perfluorinated copper phthalocyanine (FCuPc) on Au(111) and Ag(111) and of perfluoropentacene (PFP) and copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) on Ag(111). Core-level and valence band photoemission reveal that, upon capping with pure FCuPc, CuPc, and PEN, the electronic states of both contact and capping layers >realign> with respect to the monolayer and the multilayer references. The sign of the shift depends clearly on whether the capping layer is donor-like (PEN, CuPc) or acceptor-like (FCuPc). Abstract: International audience; We propose a new model enabling the extraction of the phase of a multilayer mirror from photocurrent measure- ments in the soft x rays. In this range, the effects of the mean free path of the electrons inside the stack can no longer be neglected, which prevents the phase reconstruction by conventional photocurrent measurements. The new model takes into account this phenomenon and thus extends up to the x rays the applicability range of the technique. This ap- proach has been validated through a numerical and exper- imental study of chromium/scandium multilayers used near 360 eV. To our knowledge, this work constitutes the first measurement of the phase of a multilayer mirror in the soft x-ray range.

Abstract: International audience; ZnSe nanowires with a dominant wurtzite structure have been grown at low temperature (300 degrees C) by molecular beam epitaxy assisted by solid Au nanoparticles. The nanowires emission is polarized perpendicularly to their axis in agreement with the wurtzite selection rules. Alternations of wurtzite and zinc-blende regions have been observed by transmission electron microscopy, and their impact on the nanowires optical properties has been studied by microphotoluminescence. The nanowires show a dominant intense near-band-edge emission as well as the ZnSe wurtzite free exciton line. A type II band alignment between zinc-blende and wurtzite ZnSe is evidenced by time-resolved photoluminescence. From this measurement, we deduce values for the conduction and valence band offsets of 98 and 50 meV, respectively. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract: International audience; The performance of multilayer optics depends on the quality of the buried interfaces between materials, whose intermixing strongly affects their behavior. We present an experimental method to determine, in a non destructively way, the amount of material intermixing at interfaces of multilayer structures. The reflection mechanism is related to the build up in the multilayer of a standing wave field, whose peaks and the valleys move as a function both of wavelength and of incidence angle. Exploiting this fact it is possible to modulate the electric field inside the multilayer in order to have different parts of the multilayer structure excited at a different extent and in particular the buried interfaces regions. The excitation is directly proportional to the intensity of the electric field and to the concentration of a given element in the sample. The excitation can be detected with different techniques, f.i. electron core level photoemission, fluorescence, luminescence, total electron yield. The flexibility of the experimental apparatus of the BEAR beamline (Elettra Trieste, Italy) allowed us to study some important classes of layered structures in the soft X-ray energy range, using the above mentioned techniques together with the determination of the Bragg conditions through the measurement of the specular reflectivity. We demonstrate the possibility of obtaining quantitative information on the width of the intermixing region, strongly related to the interface roughness, through the comparison with a phenomenological model of the intermixing and a numerical simulation of the standing field inside the multilayer.

Abstract: We study the introduction of a third material, namely Zr, within a nanometric periodic Mg/Co structure designed to work as optical component in the extreme UV (EUV) spectral range. Mg/Co, Mg/Zr/Co, Mg/Co/Zr and Mg/Zr/Co/Zr multilayers are designed, then characterized in terms of structural quality and optical performances through X-ray and EUV reflectometry measurements respectively. For the Mg/Co/Zr structure, the reflectance value is equal to 50% at 25.1 nm and 45deg of grazing incidence and reaches 51.3% upon annealing at 200deg C. Measured EUV reflectivity values of tri-layered systems are discussed in terms of material order within a period and compared to the predictions of the theoretical model of Larruquert. Abstract: International audience; A set of Mo/Si periodic multilayers is studied by non destructive analysis methods. The thickness of the Si layers is 5 nm while the thickness of the Mo layers changes from one multilayer to another, from 2 to 4 nm. This enables us to probe the effect of the transition between the amorphous to crystalline state of the Mo layers near the interfaces with Si on the optical performances of the multilayers. This transition results in the variation of the refractive index (density variation) of the Mo layers, as observed by x-ray reflectivity (XRR) at a wavelength of 0.154 nm. Combining x-ray emission spectroscopy and XRR, the parameters (composition, thickness and roughness) of the interfacial layers formed by the interaction between the Mo and Si layers are determined. However, these parameters do not evolve significantly as a function of the Mo thickness. It is observed by diffuse scattering at 1.33 nm that the lateral correlation length of the roughness strongly decreases when the Mo thickness goes from 2 to 3 nm. This is due to the development of Mo crystallites parallel to the multilayer surface.
