L'article réagit à celui de Wolf Feuerhahn (2020) intitulé « Le chercheur et le discours de ses objets » et publié dans cette même revue. Il reprend la proposition faite par l’auteur, qui prône une démarche historiciste en sciences humaines et sociale, en la requalifiant comme historicisme « radical ». Il discute ensuite deux points. D’abord, il tente de distinguer le présentisme de l’anachronisme, qui pourrait être maîtrisé et productif. Ensuite, il questionne les limites d’un nominalisme méthodologique strict, que l’auteur décrit plutôt comme « littéralité ». This paper is a reaction to an article by Wolf Feuerhahn, which has been published in the same journal with the title “The researcher and the discourse of his objects”. It takes up Feuerhahn’s proposal, who advocates for a historicist approach in the social sciences and humanities, and requalifies it as “radical historicism”. It then discusses two points. First, it distinguishes presentism from anachronism, suggesting that the latter could be controlled and productive. Second, it investigates the limits of strict nominalism conceived of as a method—a textual approach that the author describes rather as “literal reading”.

L’Invention du monde [The Invention of the World], directed by Michel Zimbacca and Jean-Louis Bédouin, can show us the role of film in the relationship between ethnology and surrealism in the aftermath of the Second World War. These two filmmakers belonged to the younger generation of staunchly anti-colonialist surrealists who admired primitivism and were interested in renewing the fantasmatic potential of cinema. The bold visual and sound editing of this medium-length film, which takes the human sciences as its material, mixes totems, transformation masks and extracts from films taken in the field, woven together by a poem-commentary by Benjamin Péret. Through an analysis of the making of the film, the networks mobilised and its limited but enthusiastic reception, this article shows the many protagonists revolving around film-making at the time and underlines how the ethnological milieu fitted into this.

International audience; Research on the influence of industry on chemical regulation has mostly been conducted within the framework of the production of ignorance. This special issue extends this research by looking at how industry asserts its interests––not just in the scientific sphere but also at other stages of policy-making and regulatory process––with a specific focus on the types of tools or instruments industry has used. Bringing together sociologists and historians specialized in Science and Technology Studies (STS), the articles of the special issue study the arenas in which instruments and practical guidelines for public policy are negotiated or used. The aim is to observe the devices in the making or in action, from the selection of actors to the production of thresholds, criteria, and other technical regulations. The introduction highlights how industry influence on expertise and regulation is undoubtedly far more pervasive and multifarious than has been conceptualized to date by social scientists. Putting this issue back at the heart of both the STS and social sciences research agendas is increasingly urgent and could lead to new inquiries able to highlight these logics even more widely, using fresh empirical examples.

International audience; In Senegal, various development pilot projects experimented with agricultural index insurance to make drought insurable. These interventions produced 'rainfall deficit' as an environmental problem suited for such market-based solutions. Investigating the materiality of this index insurance scheme, I explore the environmental market infrastructure, which produces risk conventions, articulates governance and market requirements, and fuels the promise of cheap, efficient, and automated environmental risk management in the Global South. I show that the production of such risk requires both a selective reduction of the physical reality of drought and the substantial reordering of material activities that organize many actors around rainfall deficit. Meteorological data produced by rain gauges placed in Senegalese fields were a central element in the initial infrastructure of index insurance. However, as reductionist technologies are often prone to failure, this index insurance scheme met many challenges. After documenting the design of this insurance scheme and the obstacles encountered, the paper depicts how actors in charge of its implementation made a shift in the insurance infrastructure from field rain gauges to remote sensing-in order to re-energize index insurance's expectations.

International audience; While current debates surround the privilege that cochlear implants provide in acquiring speech over teaching sign language, nineteenth-century debates, in contrast, opposed those who saw sign language as a tool for learning to read and write, and those who saw in it an autonomous language for organizing thought itself. Should the order of gestural signs follow written syntax? Or should it have its own coherence, that is, possibly a different syntax and order of enunciation? Starting with these questions, distinct teaching legacies developed, specifying which kinds of signs to use in which context and what role signs were to fulfill. This article focuses on French deaf and hearing teachers whose positions were influential throughout Europe and the United States, moving from Abbé de l’Epée’s 1784 method to Rémi Valade’s 1854 publication of the first sign language grammar.

International audience; This paper explores the organisational dynamics of movements claiming for a peasant reappropriation of seeds, in a context where genetic resources issued from Participatory Plant Breeding programmes involving farmers are getting official recognition from the European Union. The two organisations in France and Italy under scrutiny illustrate different pathways in seed activism. Drawing on Kriesi’s framework, we interpret them as trajectories of institutionalisation, commercialisation, and conviviality. Whether or not seed activists should attempt to change the world from within institutions or from outside is highly disputed. It leads up to the connected issue of social base participation and internal democracy

Les aires protégées ont fondé leur légitimité sur des registres scientifiques. Mais aujourd’hui, le modèle d’une gestion environnementale rationnelle est battu en brèche par de nouvelles visions de la conservation, fondées sur la participation accrue de la société. La nouvelle composition du conseil scientifique (CS) du parc naturel régional et de la réserve naturelle nationale du Vercors en 2015 marque un tournant : une place accrue est accordée aux sciences humaines et sociales et aux activités socio-économiques. Deux dossiers sur lesquels le CS s’est prononcé, l’un sur la chasse aux cerfs et sangliers, l’autre sur la protection d’un oiseau, la gélinotte, ont été analysés dans cet article. Ils nous permettent de saisir comment cette ouverture se traduit en pratiques et en négociations voir (re)définitions des expertises et des savoirs à prendre en compte pour la gestion de la nature et, in fine, des visions de la protection de la nature dans les aires naturelles protégées. Ces évolutions et les résistances à leurs égards nous permettent ainsi de comprendre la façon dont les experts sont affectés par les cerfs, sangliers et gélinottes qui peuplent le Vercors., Protected areas have based their legitimacy on scientific register. But today, the model of rational environmental management is critiziced. The public policies are characterized by an increasing participation of socio-economic actors. The new composition of the Scientific Council (CS) of the Regional Natural Park and the National Nature Reserve of Vercors appears as an example of these trends. Two cases of the SC, one on hunting deer and wild boar, the other on the protection of a bird, the hazel grouses, have been analyzed in this article. It helps to understand how this opening are translated into practices and negotiations or (re)definitions of expertise and knowledge to be taken into account for the management and finally, the definition of protected areas and nature conservation. These evolutions and resistances give a view of how experts are affected by deer, wild boar and hazel grouse that populate the Vercors.

International audience; Islamic fundamentalism is a way to oppose the counter-narrative of an exclusive Islamic civilization to the universalist master-narrative of history's pluralistic heritage. Two methods of reading the past collide here. One is a genealogical method, which values anything that relates the present to its historical roots. The other is a fundamentalist method, which relies on sacred scriptures in order to identify a founding age it arrogates to itself and to condemn anything that does not correspond to it. These two perspectives function in a conflicting yet interdependent manner. This article aims to describe the operating modes of these two narratives. First, it examines how the concept of heritage acquired new meanings and transformed into an evaluation table with which to assess past, present, and future collective identities. Second, it describes some audiovisual productions relating to the antique city of Hatra, to the destruction of its statues by Islamic State's fighters, and to its symbolism. On this basis, it analyzes these productions in terms of heritage master-and counter-narratives. Third, it addresses, in relation to the issue of heritage, the fundamentalist discursive structure, its grammar, the entrenchment of its rules, and the demarcation it implies between the community of believers and everyone else.

International audience; In this article, I look back over the maze of an investigation conducted in Fukushima prefecture since 2012. Initiated classically as an investigation into the programs for measuring radioactivity in the air, soil and food through which the inhabitants were learning to experience their new living conditions after the triple disaster that occurred on 11 March 2011, it was diverted by a number of episodes that highlighted a disturbed regime of apprehension of the real, both from the point of view of the people involved and that of the investigator. Taking note of these successive disruptions, I describe how the changes in the methods used in the field were linked to the very object in question: life in contaminated territory.; Derrotada. Through an analysis of sources produced from the 1960s to the present by the managers of the Ethiopian Simien mountains national park, this article examines the origins, manifestations, and outcomes of a struggle rooted in the transnational shaping of a “natural” landscape. On the one hand, representatives of international institutions of conservation sought to protect the vestiges of an African Eden threatened by its inhabitants. On the other hand, Ethiopian state leaders used this Western ecological ethic to gain international recognition and through it, to better enforce their power over the national territory. Thus, at the local level this governance of nature resulted in the use of both material and symbolic violence against the resident populations, who were found guilty of degrading a “National Park” classified as “World Heritage.”

Crise economique, financiere, environnementale, climatique, energetique, agricole, sanitaire, sociale, securitaire, migratoire : la plupart des secteurs economiques, politiques et sociaux paraissent aujourd’hui affectes par des bouleversements qui alimentent un sentiment d’inquietude generalise. Les discours, les images, les donnees et les theories qui tentent de donner sens a ces phenomenes proliferent dans les medias, l’espace public, les spheres politiques et intellectuelles et les organisations internationales. L’etat de « crise sans fin » est presente comme une caracteristique essentielle de notre epoque, et les propos alarmistes appellent aux interventions de toutes sortes pour faire face aux situations actuelles et prevenir celles a venir. Quand elles n’aboutissent pas a l’instauration de regimes d’exception et d’etat d’urgence, les mesures envisagees consistent souvent a creer des institutions et a mettre en place des plans de gestion de crise au sein des Etats, du secteur prive et des organisations internationales. La « crise » est alors pensee comme un phenomene global, alimente par la mondialisation et l’interdependance des reseaux et des marches qui entrainent une vulnerabilite intrinseque des systemes productifs et financiers. L'histoire des sciences et des techniques dans cinq dispositifs innovants de formation professionnelle : une analyse comparative. Nous proposons ici une comparaison critique de cinq dispositifs de formation professionnelle développés dans des contextes et pour des publics a priori très différents, tous en lien à l'histoire des sciences et des techniques : deux types d'ateliers développés au CNAM en lien avec une formation pour médiateurs scientifiques ; le projet MEDFILM développé à l'université de Strasbourg en lien à la formation professionnelle des médecins ; un groupe « histoire et épistémologie » expérimenté à l'IREM de Paris Nord pour des enseignants de mathématiques; enfin un dispositif de formation pour des professeurs des écoles, en lien à l'exposition « Regards croisés sur la lumière » à Montpellier. Au-delà des différences de contexte et de méthodes, nous indiquons leurs points communs et la convergence des outils théoriques mobilisés pour penser ces dispositifs. We propose a critical comparison of five settings for professional training developed in different contexts and for various audiences, and which are all related to the history of science and technology. These are two workshops developed in CNAM for the training of scientific mediators; the MEDFILM project developed in Strasbourg for the professional training of physicians; a group dealing with the history and epistemology of mathematics, developed in IREM of Paris Nord, for teachers of mathematics; and the training session organized for future teachers at elementary school, organized in Montpellier around the exhibition « Regards croisés sur la lumière ». Beyond the differences in contexts and methods, we point out the common features of these settings and reflect about the theoretical tools used to conceive them.

International audience; This article examines the contested process through which satellite weather data collection is being transformed from a governmental mission to one increasingly carried out by the private sector. As illustration of this controversial transformation, it addresses the debates raised in the United States between some members of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Congress, private firms, academic meteorology and international observers between 2006 and 2017 regarding the commercialisation of data obtained from radio occultations using the Global Navigation Satellite System. It looks, in particular, at the arguments, discourses, viewpoints and perspectives of these involved actors. By focusing on one particular site of controversy—policies and practices of data distribution—this case study emphasises a clash of values between conventional norms of meteorology and commercial imperatives driving the private sector with respects to data sharing. The main interest of this article pertains to the broader issue of changing the current model for data gathering, using and sharing in the face of growing commercialisation of weather satellites.

Peut-on analyser sur un même plan les dimensions matérielle et humaine de la mise hors du monde ? Le terme irrécupérable n’est-il pas en tant que tel investi d’une charge morale qui condamne irrémédiablement ce qu’il désigne, surtout lorsqu’il s’agit d’individus ? Quels problèmes épistémiques et éthiques apparaissent lorsque le même terme est utilisé pour désigner des choses comme des gens ? Cet entretien croisé entre Sophie Houdart et Delphine Corteel entend faire dialoguer les perspectives de terrain de deux chercheuses qui, l’une comme l’autre, placent au centre de leurs écrits le souci du détail ethnographique et qui consacrent une partie de leurs travaux à ces allers-retours signifiants entre humains et non-humains. Cet échange met en perspective des situations où des individus cherchent à faire face à la production continue de choses irréductibles et à faire avec elle en développant chaque jour de nouvelles techniques et de nouveaux dispositifs pour tenter soit de récupérer et de réhabiliter ce qu’on ne peut se résoudre à considérer comme perdu, soit de vivre au mieux avec l’irrécupérable dans un monde fini. Can we analyse the human and material dimensions of “removal from the world” on the same level? Isn’t the term “irrecoverable” imbued with a moral tone which irremediably condemns what it describes, especially when that is human individuals? What epistemic and ethical issues emerge when the same term is used to describe things and people? This conversation between Sophie Houdart and Delphine Corteel enables the comparison of the on-the-ground perspectives of these two researchers, both of whom focus on ethnographic details and this important to-ing and fro-ing between humans and non-humans. This interview covers situations where individuals attempt to cope with the continuous production of intractable things, and try to deal with it by developing, on a daily basis, new techniques and new strategies to enable them to try either to salvage or restore what cannot be considered lost, or to live as well as possible with the irrecoverable in a finite world.

International audience; Recent studies have proven the specificity and advantages of fingerspelling from a linguistic point of view. But although widespread, the use of fingerspelling today is limited to sign-language interactions. The appreciation for both sign language and fingerspelling, however, is recent; in fact, the two systems were often opposed to each other in the late eighteenth and throughout the nineteenth century. While a number of teachers, doctors, and politicians considered dactylology to be a communication method that could stand on its own, it was the object of a double controversy: concerning its use in school and in society, and concerning the proper production of signs. This article will focus on the invention of manual alphabets and the debates around them, which divided the deaf-mute community in France in the time between Jacob Péreire's work in 1750 and Legrand’s in 1902.

International audience; The last fifty years have seen the accelerated compilation of sign language dictionaries in many countries, but France is the only country in which early, repeated attempts were made, with nine dictionaries published in the nineteenth century. The challenges were many: creating signs, establishing a national sign language, inventing a format for a sign language dictionary, and instituting the book’s authority as the reference for the language of a community. Starting with Abbé de l’Epée’s late-eighteenth-century dictionary and working up to Abbé Lambert’s in 1865, this article investigates some of the epistemological and formal challenges involved in this undertaking.

Il est delicat d’apprehender les revues de sciences humaines et sociales (SHS) comme un bloc homogene. A travers le cas de la Revue d’histoire des sciences humaines (RHSH), fondee en 1999, nous aimerions eclairer les caracteristiques macroscopiques du milieu de l’edition des SHS. En effet, l’histoire des sciences humaines et sociales est un tres petit domaine d’etude, mais pris dans des enjeux beaucoup plus vastes. Les revues des disciplines assises aux effectifs nombreux (la sociologie, la psychologie, l’economie, la geographie, etc.) publient regulierement des dossiers historiques ou retrospectifs. Il en resulte une approche nettement disciplinaire et souvent instrumentale de leurs objets – ce qui passe par des modalites diverses, le plus souvent genealogiques, de l’hagiographie a la liquidation symbolique. La RHSH defend une approche transversale de l’histoire des sciences de l’homme, sans pour autant negliger les operations disciplinaires qui ont emaille leur developpement. Refusant d’enteriner les canons et les traditions, elle cherche a les resituer dans leur configuration historique en faisant varier les echelles d’analyse et les focales (histoire de l’edition, lieux de savoir, institutions, echanges transnationaux, etc.). Son histoire permet de mettre en evidence a la fois la difficulte et la necessite qu’il y a a contester l’ordre des disciplines.

International audience; Human-caused climate change, like the global change to which the notion of the Anthropocene refers, are areas in which contextualisation is problematic due to the scales involved, the gravity of the problems, and the central role of the sciences. This article considers studies that resituate these issues of global environment in historical, social and political contexts, as well as some of the problems they raise. The two domains have different statuses, and the stakes are dissimilar. In the case of climate change, a global public problem endowed with international institutions, research on the construction of the issue and the relations between science and politics have been set against a predominant naturalist framing. In the case of the Anthropocene, a notion that has not as yet stabilised and has been appropriated by several groups of actors, partial contextualisations contesting certain globalisations raise epistemic and political debates.; Le changement climatique d’origine humaine, comme le changement global auquel est attachée la notion d’Anthropocène, sont des domaines dont la contextualisation est problématique en raison des échelles en jeu, de la gravité des problèmes et du rôle central des sciences. Cet article rend compte de travaux qui replacent ces questions d’environnement global dans des contextes historiques, sociaux et politiques, et des problèmes qu’ils soulèvent. Les deux domaines ont des statuts différents, et les enjeux sont dissemblables. Dans le cas du changement climatique, problème public mondial doté d’institutions internationales, les travaux sur la construction du problème et les rapports entre science et politique se sont opposés à un cadrage naturaliste prédominant. S’agissant de l’Anthropocène, notion peu stabilisée et appropriée par plusieurs groupes d’acteurs, des contextualisations partielles contestant certaines globalisations soulèvent des débats épistémiques et politiques.

International audience; The ambition of “scientific creationism” is to prove that science actually confirms religion. This is especially true in the case of Muslim creationism, which adopts a reasoning of a syllogistic type: divine revelation is truth; good science confirms truth; divine revelation is henceforth scientifically proven. Harun Yahya is a prominent Muslim “creationist” whose website hosts many texts and documentary films, among which “Evidence of the true faith in historical sources”. This is a small audiovisual production which, starting from some archeological files, seeks to demonstrate that Qur’an truth precedes science but is equally proven by it. In this paper, we examine the organization of the scientific and religious argumentative repertoires and, in particular, what in each of them is taken as evidence and gets access to an authoritative status. It leads us to show how much this type of Muslim creationism constitutes a kind of scientism.

International audience; In this article we follow, over his long career, the evolution of the reflections of Edmond Malinvaud on economic “science” and its relationship with the “problem” of statistical induction. To do so we largely rely on his own words by quoting his many articles addressing these issues. We consider in turn his views on statistical methods and structural econometrics, on apriorism versus empiricism, the Koopmans-Vining controversy on measurement with or without theory, econometric methods and the challenge of modelling, the Popperian temptation of a falsifiable economic science, the uneasy alliance between induction and expertise, understanding and advising. We conclude with Malinvaud's views on eclecticism, which he deems to be the only position able to meet, despite its rapid progress, the “advisory imperative” characterizing economics.

International audience; Ce débat porte sur la façon dont le changement climatique transforme les activités et les stratégies des entreprises, et dont celles-ci, en retour, peuvent contribuer, par leur action, à engager une transition bas carbone. Il est organisé autour de quatre grandes questions : comment les entreprises ont-elles participé aux négociations climatiques internationales ? quels sont les effets sur leur action des instruments qui visent à instaurer un prix du carbone via des taxes ou des marchés ? quelles stratégies alternatives de responsabilisation pour les conduire vers une transition bas carbone ont été expérimentées et avec quels effets ? quelles sont les innovations managériales bas carbone dans les entreprises ?

‘Dear fellow chemist… I picture thee surrounded by papers and work’, Antoine-Francois Fourcroy wrote in 1799 to Mme Dupiery.1 Who was this woman addressed by the well-known academician as a fellow chemist? What was she working on? And where did she work? So many questions raised by a single sentence by an eighteenth-century male savant, addressed to a woman of whom we know very little. How does this specific case fit the distinction between professional/institutional and amateur/domestic typical of how some modern historiography interprets the gendering of scientific knowledge? According to this dichotomized interpretation, women who took part in scientific endeavours are not considered producers of knowledge, but mere auxiliaries, supporting male savants from the domestic space where they seem confined, without entitlements to affiliations with learned, scientific institutions — these being the preserve of men of science. This assumed emphasis on exclusion from the institutional and professional sphere persisted, even amid women’s growing involvement in public scientific life during the Republic of Letters and the Enlightenment.2

International audience; This paper describes the French initiative in materials research against both a national and an international background, in an attempt to disentangle the local circumstances, which prompted this governmental initiative, and to charac- terize the specific profile of materials research in France. In presenting a biography of the interdisciplinary program in materials research (PIRMAT), we argue that: i) the PIRMAT denotes a failure of the French science policy in materials research; ii) the leadership of the CNRS led to a specific style of research, quite different from the engineering approach of Materials Science and Engineering, and characteristic of a French style in materials research.

National audience; The controversy concerning shale gas exploitation is hereby analyzed from the point of view of the oil industry. This article aims to reconnect this controversy within the long time-frame of hydrocarbons in France. We wanted to expand from the analysis of the anti-shale gas mobilization by focusing more on the proshale front, following the Jacob law vote. We highlighted the arenas where this controversy has been debated and how those arenas and the debating actors reconfigured the interpretation of this public issue. We wanted to analyze in detail this framing process with particular emphasis on the importance of the scientific and technical dimensions of the tools used in such operation.; La controverse concernant l'exploitation des gaz de schiste est ici abordée selon le point de vue des industriels et professionnels du secteur pétrolier. L'article vise à réintégrer la controverse dans le temps long de l'exploitation des hydrocarbures en France. Cette étude se veut complémentaire des analyses déjà produites au sujet de la mobilisation anti-GDS en se concentrant davantage sur la reprise en main de la controverse par les pro-GDS suite au vote de la loi Jacob. La mise en évidence des arènes dans lesquelles la controverse s'est poursuivie et de la façon dont ces arènes et les acteurs qui les constituent sont parvenus à reconfigurer le cadre d'interprétation de ce problème public constitue l'élément central de cet article. Nous avons tenu à analyser dans le détail les processus de cadrage, notamment en soulignant l'importance des dimensions scientifiques et techniques des outils mobilisés pour cette opération.

Le paysage français de l’expertise scientifique sur la biodiversité, mobilisée dans la construction des politiques publiques de protection de la nature, fait l’objet depuis une dizaine d’années d’une intense activité de réforme et de création institutionnelles. Cette étude exploratoire s’appuie sur des entretiens avec un panel d’acteurs agissant à l’interface entre les connaissances et l’action publique. Le champ de l’expertise, en biodiversité comme pour d’autres domaines, est le lieu d’une difficile rencontre entre science et politique. L’inconfort ressenti vis-à-vis du fonctionnement actuel des dispositifs d’expertise est souvent avancé comme argument pour justifier les différentes réformes engagées ces dernières années. Notre travail montre cependant qu’à l’inverse le foisonnement institutionnel récent est source de déstabilisation pour les acteurs, tant du côté des scientifiques que des décideurs politiques. Pour répondre malgré tout à la demande d’expertise, le positionnement des experts peut être décrit par trois figures archétypales - le « garant » de la qualité scientifique, le « gardien » des principes de protection de la nature et l’« agent » spécialisé dans l’expertise au plus près des politiques - dont la légitimité et le pouvoir ont évolué au cours du temps, au détriment des « gardiens ». Cette situation est analysée au regard des enjeux stratégiques de chacun des acteurs et des évolutions récentes du contexte académique et des modes d’élaboration des politiques publiques. Enfin, de nouvelles perspectives de recherche sont identifiées pour approfondir ces résultats., French environmental public policies on biodiversity are designed drawing upon scientific expertise. The framework of this expertise has been deeply remodeled in the past decade through a series of reforms and the creation of new institutions. This exploratory study was based on interviews with stakeholders working at the interface between scientific knowledge and political action. The concept of “expertise” describes the difficult and complicated relationship between science and action, which is not specific to biodiversity policies but which lead to a feeling of uneasiness for scientists and policymakers. The reforms engaged in the last decade are then often justified by this uneasiness described by interviewees when thinking about expertise processes. However, our results indicate that the recent institutional proliferation is perceived as unsettling by both scientists and policymakers, comforting the existing difficulties. To go beyond these difficulties and meet the demand for expertise, experts adopt what can be described as three archetypal postures – ensuring sound science as “guarantors”, defending conservation principles as “guardians”, or working closely with policymakers as “agents”. "The influence of "guarantors" and "agents" has grown" over time at the expense of traditional “guardians”. Results are analyzed with regard to the strategic stakes of each stakeholder and to the recent changes in academic and political actions. Finally, new research perspectives are discussed to enlarge our results.

This study explores the way the concept of temperature was presented in lower-secondary science textbooks in France, Poland and England at the end of the 1950s and in the 2000s. I draw on history of science, history of education and book history to analyze different treatments of an apparently-similar scientific concept with regard to national contexts and diachronic change. Thus I include a presentation of the contexts in which the textbooks I study are published, and I analyse textbooks content revealing different approaches to present the notion of temperature. I argue that these results show that textbooks are valuable sources to investigate public representations of science and their shift over time, and I conclude by stressing the parallel of this evolution with change in everyday relationship with science and scientific instruments.

International audience; This article offers an analysis of controversies surrounding the coverage of climate change in the French press. The theoretical framework for the analysis combines the sociology of public problems, media sociology, and science and technology studies. We present these controversies as an expression of a struggle over the ownership and framing of climate change as a public problem. Specific social groups are involved in this process of definition, framing, and agendasetting. The success or failure of these groups in closing debates results in the construction of issues as either consensual matters-of-fact or controversial matters-of-concern. This framework allows us to distinguish between two phases in the career of this public problem, characterised by differences in ownership-configurations and the visibility of controversial points of view. We identify four relevant groups*scientists, politicians, journalists and non-governmental organisations*as well as certain social processes that help to explain changes in the attention that controversies received from the media. We conclude with the hypothesis of a third phase characterised by a relatively high degree of attention on controversies in French media.

CONTEXTE DE LA RECHERCHE Depuis les années 1980, les sciences de la nature ont lancé un cri d'alarme concernant l'érosion de la biodiversité qu'ils nomment « la 6 ème extinction des espèces ». Prenant appui sur la création du néologisme « biodiversité », relayés par les médias, certains scientifiques alertent le monde sur la responsabilité majeure des activités humaines dans l'érosion de la diversité biologique. Ils font valoir son rythme inégalé, son irréversibilité et son extension à l'ensemble des espèces vivantes tout en affirmant la nécessité de sa sauvegarde pour le bon fonctionnement des écosystèmes. Pour nombre de biologistes, la conservation de la biodiversité est aussi un enjeu patrimonial : il s'agit de préserver les témoins de l'évolution du vivant et de transmettre ce patrimoine naturel aux générations futures. Face à ces divers enjeux concernant la biodiversité, des biologistes occidentaux (en France en particulier), en complément des recherches menées en petites équipes, ont mis en oeuvre de grandes expéditions au financement important et dépassant la centaine de chercheurs. Ces nouvelles expéditions se déroulent principalement dans les pays du Sud (Vanuatu en 2006, Mozambique en 2009, Madagascar en 2010, etc.). Elles ont comme objectifs affichés d'inventorier les compartiments négligés de la biodiversité d'une région donnée (invertébrés terrestres et marins principalement), d'archiver leurs découvertes dans les collections des grands muséums d'histoire naturelle mais aussi d'alerter l'opinion et les pouvoirs publics sur cette érosion. A l'heure de profondes transformations dans l'exploitation du vivant et de débats politico-symboliques forts concernant la conformité des prospections aux principes d'équité formalisés dans la Convention sur la Diversité Biologique (CDB), de telles expéditions-même à visées uniquement scientifique et médiatique-sont attendues sur leur capacité à fournir des compensations aux pays visités. 2. DESCRIPTION DE LA RECHERCHE Notre projet pluridisciplinaire en sciences sociales (anthropologie, histoire, sociologie), financé par l'Agence Nationale de la Recherche en France, s'intéresse à la manière dont ces grandes expéditions construisent leurs savoirs sous les tropiques. RésuméDès le XVIIesiècle, les médecins affirment la difficulté de rendre compte des affections hystériques. Cet article étudie deux types de pratiques scripturaires développées pour rendre compte de ces troubles, l’usage de métaphores et l’insertion de narrations. Dans un premier temps abondent les métaphores (Protée, caméléon, hydre) et il s’agit de suivre la transformation de leurs usages entre 1570 et 1820. À partir du XVIIIesiècle sont privilégiés les récits de cas de patients, inscrivant la compréhension de la maladie à partir de la reconstitution de son évolution dans le temps. À travers l’étude de ces deux types d’énonciation, il s’agit d’analyser comment des enjeux politiques et épistémologiques habitent les textes, en déplacent les accents, favorisent le renvoi à certains imaginaires, et construisent une catégorie médicale : l’hystérie. Au-delà même de la théorisation de l’hystérie, c’est la transformation du savoir médical et de la perception du rôle de la médecine qui apparaît avec l’étude de ce corpus.

International audience; The paper investigates how field experimentation of genetically modified crops became central to the French controversy on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in recent years. Initially constructed in the 1980s as a cognitive endeavor to be preserved from lay interference, field trials of genetically modified crops were reconceived as "an intrusion in the social space," which had to be negotiated with actors from that space. In order to analyze this transformation, the authors suggest that it is necessary to develop an interpretive framework that combines theoretical perspectives from science and technology studies and the sociology of social problems, and emphasizes the importance of the way in which actors compete in a heterogeneous public space, to put forward alternative framings of problems. The authors present a detailed analysis of the interactions and conflicts between actors in diverse social arenas in order to better understand the dynamics of this sociotechnical controversy.

Dieser Artikel behandelt in historischer Perspektive die Beziehung zwischen Indivi- duum und Gesellschaft sowie das Modell psychischer Ursachen, wie es von Durkheim in seiner Selbstmordstudie entwickelt wurde. Dazu wird dieses Modell einerseits in Beziehung gesetzt zum Stand der Interpretationen, die ihm vorausgingen und andererseits zu einer kritischen Lesart, wie sie von Halbwachs 1930 entwickelt worden ist. Zunächst gehen wir im Detail auf die Analyse von Durkheim ein, in der er psychiatrische Thesen behandelt, die fur ihn eine soziale Tatsache iiber individuelle Pathologien erklären. Wir zeigen dann, daß die durkheimsche Konstruktion eine Zuruckweisung individueller Motive impliziert, welche durch eine andere psychologische Interpretation ersetzt werden, die sich auf sozial determinierte unbewußte Mechanismen grundet. Dabei unterstreichen wir, daß diese theoretische Konstruktion auf einige Schwierigkeiten bei der Konfrontation mit den empirischen Daten der damaligen Zeit stößt und den Wert der durkheimschen Selbst- mordtypologie grundsätzlich in Frage stellt. Schließlich untersuchen wir die Art, in der es Halbwachs dreißig Jahre später gelang, diese Probleme eher zu lösen, indem er auf die theoretischen Postulate, die Durkheim ins Zentrum der soziologischen Analyse stellte, verzichtete., The article questions the link between individuals and society and the ideas of psychological causality set out by Durkheim in Suicide, and puts them into historical perspective, considering previous readings and the critical revisionist perspective by Halb- wachs in 1930. First, we consider the ways in which Durkheim interpreted psychiatric theories which explained social facts through individual pathology. We then show that this Durkheimian construction involves the rejection of individual motive and replaces it by a different psychological interpretation which is based on socially determined unconscious mechanisms. We underline the fact that this theoretical construction had several difficulties even in relation to the empirical findings of the period and that it leads us to question the Durkheimian typology of suicide. Finally, we consider the way in which, some 30 years later, Halbwachs was able largely to resolve these difficulties by abandoning the theoretical axioms which Durkheim had placed at the heart of sociological analysis., De auteurs van dit artikel bestuderen de verhouding individu / maatschappij alsook het psychische causaliteitsmodel zoals bedacht door Durkheim in zijn werk «Le Suicide». Ze plaatsen dit werk in een historisch perspectief ten aanzien van enerzijds de interpretaties (gedachtegoed) die het werk vooraf gingen en anderzijds vertrekkende van de kritische herlezing verricht door Halbwachs in 1930. In eerste instantie wordt door de auteurs in detail de manier besproken waarop Durkheim de psychiatrische stellingen afweert. Stellingen die volgens hem een sociaal feit verklaren door individuele pathologie (ziekten-kunde). Vervolgens wordt aangetoond dat de opstelling van Durkheim de verwerping van de analyse van individuele motieven impliceert en deze theoretische constructie met een aantal tegenkantingen te maken krijgt als ze wordt geconfronteerd met empirische gegevens uit de tijd. Uiteindelijk brengt dit met zich mee dat men zich vragen gaat stellen inzake de gegrondheid van Durkheim's zelfmoordtypologie. Contrat ; B03962 ; Precautionary expertise for GM crops (peg]; L'article examine le rôle du principe de précaution (PP), dans la transformation du paysage français de réglementation des organismes génétiquement modifiés utilisés dans l'alimentation et l'agriculture pendant la dernière décennie. Malgré la rareté de références explicites au PP, les auteurs soutiennent que ce principe a joué un rôle déterminant. Les changements ne résultent pas d'un processus linéaire contrôlé par le haut, comme pour l'application d'une nouvelle loi., Au contraire, le PP est devenu un point d'articulation entre des débats dans différentes arènes publiques ; à travers ces débats, il a été progressivement traduit en pratiques pragmatiques. De nouvelles frontières ont été dessinées entre les pratiques d'évaluation et de gestion des risques. Ceci a facilité l'émergence progressive d'une arène distincte d'expertise scientifique et a ouvert la possibilité d'émancipation réciproque de la décision publique et de l'expertise scientifique.

Il rassemble la plupart des contributions de la rencontrethématique de Rabat (2-3 février 2001) qui portait plus particulièrement sur « Les ingénieurs maghrébins dans les systèmes de formation ». Les articles publiés dans ce recueil sont des textes intermédiaires qui font état des réflexions des membres du programme. Les participants à la rencontre de Rabat étaient alors à divers stades d'avancement de leurs travaux. Pourquoi avoir choisi de se pencher de manière spécifique sur la question de la formation des ingénieurs marocains, algériens et tunisiens ? Si la question de l'emploi des diplômés au Maghreb a été largement abordée, tant par le discours des politiques que des chercheurs, en revanche la communauté scientifique a négligé l'étude des formations d'ingénieurs. Or, ces dernières apparaissent stratégiques en terme de développement dans la mesure où elles sont censées fournir la main-d'oeuvre qualifiée, les cadres et les innovateurs du secteur productif. Au Maghreb, l'effort de formation a été d'autant plus massif que la présence de Maghrébins dans les corps techniques au moment de l'indépendance était insignifiante. Cependant, au-delà des discours sur la nécessité de former des ingénieurs et des techniciens, la question de la formation des compétences se pose moins aujourd'hui en termes de pénurie de cadres techniques, qu'en termes de massification de certaines formations d'ingénieurs. Il convient désormais de s'attarder sur les implications scolaires,professionnelles et sociales des arbitrages imposés par le nouveau contexte de la transition libérale ou d'austérité budgétaire qui touche les États maghrébins. N'y a-t-il pas danger, dans un tel contexte, de voir les gestionnaires du système éducatif réduire fortement les effectifs des filières technologiques de haut niveau, sansprendre en compte le manque à gagner qu'une telle politique produirait du point de vuedes savoirs scientifiques sur les sociétés et les systèmes de gouvernement ?Par ailleurs, l'histoire de la figure de l'ingénieur au Maghreb a été abordée lors de cette rencontre. Des historiens ont posé des jalons permettant de mieux comprendre les pratiques professionnelles et le discours des ingénieurs de la période coloniale. Last but not least, l'étude des professionnalitésd'ingénieurs à l'époque contemporaine nous a permis d'appréhender les fonctions exercées et le rôle jouépar les ingénieurs dans l'organisation, en interaction avec leur environnement extérieur.
