Abstract

Main archaeological articles and books from China that have been published from 1949 through 1965 are translated and compiled in bibliographic form. Because there is a lack of materials available to Western scholars of Chinese studies, the authors see these items as necessary resources for the understanding of Chinese civilization and the development of world civilization even though most of them are written in Chinese. The index covers Chinese civilization from prehistoric times to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) It is arranged chronologically by time period and dynasty, with subdivisions by geopolitical area. For each subdivision, the entries are arranged according to the publication date. To facilitate use of the index, a chart showing the chronology of Chinese civilization, a list of the geopolitical subdivisions of China, and a map that shows location of subdivisions and the main rivers and cities are provided. Abstract

A list of descriptive scholarly works relevant to Bangladesh are compiled in an introductory bibliography for nonspecialist users that describes essential aspects of Bangladesh's history, society, and culture. History is emphasized, but the listing also includes documents about social/cultural anthropology, sociology, demography, economics, political science, and geography. The development of Pakistan from 1947 to 1971 is covered as an historical perspective, but literature dealing with the Asian Crisis of 1971 and the emergence of Bangladesh is excluded. Section titles of the bibliography are (1) Historical Background to Modern Bangladesh society; (2) Society, Culture, and Political Economy in Bangladesh Today: Background Materials; (3) Ethnographic and Other Materials on the Non-Bengali Tribal Groupings in Bangladesh; (4) Traditional Culture, Literature, and the Arts: Selected Titles Available in English; and (5) Scholarly Journals and News Periodicals Regularly Carrying Articles on Bangladesh: English Language. Abstract

A general observation about the vocabularies of most languages is that they tend to increase in size over time. Little is known about the causal mechanisms involved in this lexical expansion, but most anthropologists and linguists are in agreement that it probably mirrors general cultural evolution. The study of lexical growth becomes important if it reveals regularities that allow for useful generalizations and predictions about the broader problem of linguistic evolution. This study focuses on the development of plant names, and with the assumption that man's vocabulary for kinds of plants has developed over time, asks (1) whether regularities in the ethnobotanical lexicons of past and present day languages can be observed that allow inferences as to the major patterns of nomenclatural growth, (2) whether such patterns are related to other aspects of man's socio-cultural development, and (3) whether such regularities have productive implications for the evolution of vocabulary in general. Abstract

Ethnographic semantics is that discipline which seeks to understand human cognition through an analysis of the cognitive content of linguistic expressions: that is, the systematic study of the meanings of words and the role of these meanings in cognitive systems. There are many misconceptions about the nature of ethnosemantics, however, and by exploring these misconceptions and by using the ethnosemantic method of contrast to establish what ethnosemantics is not, it is hoped that the nature of the discipline will be made clearer. Evidence is presented to refute six basic misconceptions about ethnosemantics: (1) it takes native generalizations at face value, (2) it is concerned with methodology for its own sake, (3) it is anti-theoretical and anti-comparative, (4) it is limited to domains in which there are external classifications, its methods being inapplicable to domains not involving genealogical relationships, (5) it is anti-evolutionary and does not give objective accounts of cultural systems, and (6) it is anti-statistical and unconcerned with prediction. Abstract

This paper is based on ‘Ending Period Poverty in Scotland: A Historical and International Perspective’ funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s Arts and Humanities Research Network Award from 2020 to 2022 (grant number 64992), and administratively based at the University of St Andrews with Principal Investigator Bettina Bildhauer and Co-Investigators Sharra Vostral and Camilla Mørk Røstvik. This briefing paper discusses how to include historical perspectives to assess the potential success for current and future menstruation legislation. The case of Scotland provides an instructive example of law-making about free period products and period poverty. While commercial products are perceived as a solution, historical research suggests that cultural attitudes, lingering stigma, and regional differences affect opportunities for passing laws. To predict the likelihood that proposed menstrual product legislation might be adopted in other locations, historical factors related to attitudes about menstruation, including stigma, must be considered and understood to effect lasting change. Abstract

In this article we aim to analyze the effective practices of students in the 2nd grade of high school when they perform tasks on the representation of geometric solids in the paper/pencil environment, based on the manipulation of Concrete Object Construction Project (PCOC) models, obtained by rapid prototyping on the 3D printer. For that, we appropriated the Institutional Analysis and Didactic Sequence as a research methodology. We immerse our studies in the theoretical framework constituted by the Anthropology Theory of Didactics, with emphasis on its praxeological approach, to provide us with elements of analysis of the techno-theoretical techniques and speeches in Spatial Geometry, mobilized by the students in their effective practices. The results reveal that students can represent the solids considered in the paper/pencil environment but do not indicate or describe the techniques they use in the referred representations during their effective practices. Therefore, this is a problem of the reference institution, particularly the 2nd grade of high school, which does not provide training to students involving the indications and descriptions, as we proceeded in developing our a priori analysis around the PCOCs that we worked on with these students. Abstract

The article presents a historiographic review of "Siberia: XX Century". This interuniversity collection of research papers was published in Kemerovo in 1997–2007. Based on standard research methods and special historical and historiographic principles, the authors analyzed the periodical as a complex historiographic source. The quantitative analysis made it possible to calculate the ratio of the special issues, to assess the editorial board and authors, to describe the research subjects, etc. The semantic analysis was based on the content analysis, which also revealed to what degree the authors of the journal participated in the historical discourse. The paper features retrospective and prospective analyzes of the main research works of the leading Siberian scientists published in "Siberia: XX Century". The research objective was to identify the patterns of the current historiographic situation based on the state of knowledge of the key historical processes in Siberia.
