This article examines the possibilities and limitations of ethnoeducation for an anti-racist pedagogical practice. It is based on the study of an elementary school in the Colombian city of Cali. Though severe racial discrimination is naturalised in Colombian educational institutions, the school chosen for this study implements a different educational project based on the valorization of Afrocolombian and Indigenous cultures. The study reveals that the implementation of such an educational project enables the students to acquire basic racial literacy and question overt forms of racial discrimination. However, implicit forms of racial bias and internalized racism persist. In that context, we argue that a comprehensive anti-racist educational praxis needs to emphasise the denaturalisation of internalised forms of racism and the visibilization of the structural aspects of racism. In this article, we propose a mapping of the political identities of the anti-racist feminist and Afro-descendant women's movement in Latin America and the Caribbean from the 1980s onwards. We do so as organic activists and intellectuals, witnesses of more than thirty years of feminist, lesbofeminist, Afro-descendant, and anti-racist movements in the region. The mapping starts with our first contacts and incursions into this movement and reaches the present day when we are more dedicated to critical theorizing, research, and teaching committed to anti-racist and decolonial struggles. In the spirit of a dictionary, we take up the different names with which Black women and Afro-descendants position and make themselves known, showing that many of these names respond to different genealogies and political stances that we are interested in characterizing, to account for the richness of the movement. This article analyzes the ethnic-racial debate proposed by the subject «Topics I: Race, Ethnicity and (Counter)Mestizaje in Peru's Bicentennial », in the Bachelor of Anthropology of the Faculty of Social Sciences of a public university in the capital of Peru, Lima, carried out in 2021. The theoretical-methodological debate is anchored in the theory of ethnicracial relations on the production of knowledge around race, racism, anti-racism, miscegenation and other recurring themes. The work focuses on a reflection on issues of race, racism and anti-racism in a course taught by the author as a guest professor in collaboration with another professor at the institution. With the participation, the author can reflect with students on how to produce knowledge about race, racism, and anti-racism from a perspective of critical autoethnography oriented toward antiracist education. The work carried out indicates that the course provided the possibility of immersion in multiple debates, concept proposals, theoretical analyzes and historical experiences to address issues related, in particular, with race, racism and anti-racism in higher education in Peru in favor of anti-racist education. There is a mountain of evidence demonstrating that students with marginalized, i.e. purposefully socially excluded, identities experience significantly worse academic and social outcomes in STEM disciplines. However, there has been less attention on how white women, who experience sexism due to their gender but are privileged due to their race, simultaneously contribute to and play a role in dismantling systemic racism. In this study, I used constructivist grounded theory to explore the process through which white women in STEM commit to racial justice both within and outside of their disciplines. Interviews with 36 white women in STEM across a range of disciplines helped build an emergent model that illustrated how participants advanced through three stages to move toward actionable anti-racist commitment. However, many participants struggled to connect STEM with their anti-racist practice, as many STEM disciplines lacked anti-racism curriculum and/or the ability to practice anti-racism within STEM. This model helps illustrate the complex process in which white women in STEM become committed to racial justice. Within STEM specifically, this research has direct implications for the importance of adding social contexts and anti-racist material directly into STEM curricula to foster anti-racist practices for future STEM professionals. Social work curricula have evolved to include anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion (ADEI) as a critical lens for working with community members across the micro, mezzo, and macro levels of practice. However, the research to support best practices for teaching ADEI praxis is minimal. Consequently, the unclear guidance translates into students being unprepared for anti-racism praxis in their practicum settings, which may result in them being harmed, as well as being the perpetrators of harm. To address this gap, one school of social work developed a pre-practicum lab for generalist practice in its Master of Social Work program. In this Lab, students learn the cornerstones of reflection, self-awareness, self-regulation and how to engage within a practicum environment using an ADEI lens. In this paper, I consider evidence of how students of colour enact whiteness by being violent towards depictions of Black people even in spaces without Black people. In this paper, we discuss the decolonisation of curriculum development in an online undergraduate health course at the University of South Australia, emphasising the importance of centring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices and knowledge systems. We highlight the ongoing role of higher education in perpetuating systemic racism against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples through colonised curricula and inadequate cultural training. We discuss how we embarked on a comprehensive course redesign aimed at fostering cultural safety and empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, moving away from deficit-based narratives. Through our work, we advocate for integrating Indigenous knowledges across health education to prepare graduates for culturally safe practice. In the paper, we discuss challenges faced, such as institutional constraints and the need for ongoing anti-racism education. We emphasise the importance of collaborative efforts between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous academics in curriculum development, creating space for meaningful engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and knowledge holders. Ultimately, we conclude that ongoing reflection and adaptation are crucial for effective decolonisation and in creating inclusive and culturally responsive learning experiences that benefit all health students. Education doctoral programs have an essential role to play in this moment of American history, as we train, teach, guide, and prepare education professionals to learn, unlearn, and lead as antiracist education activists. EdD program faculty and administrators sit in critical roles and must examine our own antiracist beliefs, while also facilitating anti-racist learning for our doctoral learners, who, in turn, must create anti-racist learning communities where they teach and lead. This article reflects on the challenges of developing anti-racist commitments in a UK university during and 'post' pandemic and re-envisions pedagogic failure in this context. Tackling racism requires that our conversations start from a recognition that we are always situated in relationship not just to others but to the structures and cultures of our environments and communities. There are long histories of empathy and its role, risks and limits in intersectional understandings of the transformation of inequalities. We contend that empathy is integral to anti-racist pedagogies because it: centres relationality in critical and reflective learning; has the capacity to be subversive through its challenge to the 'dominant transmission model of education prevalent in the neoliberal colonial university'; reveals how the university acts upon and works to erase consciousness of our emotional and embodied selves, and has the capacity to unsettle our epistemic horizons to reveal our complicity in colonial practices. We synthesize the tools of Critical Discourse Analysis and Anti-Racist Pedagogy to define and exemplify Critical AntiRacist Discourse Analysis (CARDA) as a tool for addressing expressions of systemic racism in institutional policy. We then demonstrate CARDA with the example of a university course syllabus, which represents an institutional policy text negotiated between an individual and an institution. Findings indicate how CARDA can be used to uncover unconscious and implicit racism and amplify antiracism in a syllabus. The social work profession adheres to the values of social justice and equity, yet extensive literature suggests that anti-racism education in social work has room for growth. Research demonstrates that social work practitioners and educators often fail to recognize (1) how structural oppression creates racial inequities and (2) how social workers maintain and reproduce hegemonic power structures. Critical whiteness theory (CWT) seeks to reveal the invisible role of whiteness in constructing racial inequities. As a subject area, critical whiteness studies emerged in the late 1990s as an expansion of critical race theory. A variety of disciplines have incorporated critical whiteness studies as a framework for anti-racism education; however, CWT remains relatively absent from the social work literature. This paper proposes the incorporation of CWT in social work education as a tool to facilitate critical self-reflexivity and combat structural racism within the profession. Engaging with the concepts of white normativity, white ignorance, and white complicity allows social work educators and students to acknowledge and interrogate the formative ways in which social work pedagogy maintains and reproduces white supremacy. Background: Racism contributes to health disparities and is a serious threat to public health. Teaching physicians about racism, how to address it in medical practice, and developing high quality and sustainable curricula are essential to combating racism. Objective: This study aimed to (1) describe the experience of racism and anti-racism teaching in residency programs, and elicit recommendations from key informants, and (2) use these data and formative research to develop recommendations for other residencies creating, implementing, and evaluating anti-racism curricula in their own programs. Methods: From May to July 2023, 20 faculty and residents were recruited via convenience sampling for key informant interviews conducted via Microsoft Teams. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, and coded. An initial list of themes was developed using theoretical frameworks, and then refined using a grounded-theory approach. A brief online optional anonymous demographic survey was sent to participants in August of 2023. Results: Eighty percent (20/25) of participants approached were interviewed. Seventy-five percent (15/20) answered a brief optional demographic survey. Seven themes emerged: (1) Racism in medicine is ubiquitous; (2) Anti-racism teaching in medicine varies widely; (3) Sustainability strategies should be multifaceted and include recruitment, resource allocation, and outcome measures; (4) Resources are widely available and accessible if one knows where to look; (5) Outcomes and metrics of success should include resident- faculty-, patient- community-, and system-focused outcomes; (6) Curricular strategies should be multilayered, longitudinal, and woven into the curriculum; and (7) Self-reflection and discomfort are necessary parts of the process. Conclusions: This study is one of the first to qualitatively examine perspectives of key stakeholders invested in anti-racism teaching for residents. The Support - Pipeline - Outcomes - Community (SPOC) Model, that was developed using information collected during this study, can be used in the future as a guide for others working to design and implement sustainable and high quality anti-racism curricula for residents. The 2022 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) definitively identifies anti-racism as a necessary component of social work education. This change supports an effort to ensure that coming generations of social workers are more than culturally competent, but rather actively anti-racist in their practice across the micro, mezzo, and macro spectrum. While some social work programs have already embraced anti-racist education, many still have significant work to do. The fact remains that every accredited school will be required to make this shift to stay in compliance with CSWE accreditation once the newly ratified EPAS comes into effect. Although changes are expected of social work schools/programs, guidance on how to make such changes has been scarce. This paper provides an overview of what is meant by anti-racist social work education and why it is important, inclusive of emphasizing the difference between rhetoric and praxis. Based on a narrative review of the literature related to social work schools/programs in the U.S. and Canada that began incorporating anti-racism prior to EPAS 2022, suggestions for encouraging strategies within both the implicit and explicit curricula that align with anti-racist social work education are offered. The curriculum review and transformation project reported in this paper represents an intentional and collaborative effort of faculty and administrators in one academic department to implement meaningful changes in undergraduate curricula. Supported by two internal grants from the university, this three-year project included all faculty and administrators of the department. A systematic comparison was conducted between course syllabi content before and after the curriculum content intervention. Results identify changes in syllabi, course learning objectives, units/topics covered, and readings/course materials. Recent attention to issues of systemic and institutional racism have resulted in renewed calls for antiracist teaching and learning in the health sciences. Concurrently, there is an emerging socio-political mobilization to pass legislation that limits the teaching of systemic racism. We argue that teaching and learning about racism in academic health professional curricula often has serious limitations—stagnating in a place of teaching about the social and structural determinants of health, yet emphasizing health education and individual behavioral interventions as solutions to health inequities. We present a framework that explains essential components of antiracist knowledge and action that we argue must be implemented across health sciences curricula. Using this framework, we call on health sciences educators to examine how learners engage with racism as a determinant of health and to make curricular changes that provide opportunities to learn about and engage with antiracist actions. Undergraduate research with historical archives offers an engaged and rewarding way to expose students to historical geographic research methods. In combination with an antiracist pedagogical approach, students' archival research provides pathways to better understand the racialized history of a place through a process that most find enjoyable. In this article, the author shares her experience teaching a geography course focused on local racial history in Louisville, Kentucky (United States) and discusses the types of archives-based assignments students complete. "Space wins" is a long-held homiletical maxim. Usually, this means that architecture and pulpit style influence how sermons are delivered and heard. What is less frequently considered is how monuments and memorials affect proclamation in space. Among other things, Confederate monuments make claims on space, communicate idealized aesthetics, and preach about hopes for a particular eschatological community. This essay examines pedagogical approaches to preaching that confronts Confederate monuments. It is based upon courses I offered in 2022 at The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, and through the Association of Chicago Theological Schools D.Min. program in Chicago, Illinois. After articulating a pedagogy drawn from the work of Leonora Tubbs Tisdale and Willie James Jennings, I examine three approaches to place-based pedagogy that serve anti-racist preaching by (1) analyzing monuments within the teaching location, (2) fostering reflective participation in pilgrimage to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, and (3) inviting students to research monuments in their home community and confront them through preaching. These approaches can foster preaching that is better attuned to addressing localized histories, better able to identify and confront specific aspects of white supremacy that are concretized in a community, and more adept at offering a gospel proclamation that is finely tuned to the transformative needs of a particular place. This conceptual piece uses Critical Race Theory (CRT) as a way to recognize systemic inequities within sorority and fraternity life (SFL) communities, and to advance meaningful change on college campuses. We engage histories, literature, and current events to aid practitioners and scholars in deeper considerations around antiracist education in action. Further, we provide an accompanying case study to offer practical considerations for SFL practitioners, campus administrators, and scholars seeking to engage antiracist work within these communities. Background -- Limited work has been done to integrate ethical leadership and anti-racist school leadership practice. Through narrative ethics, this paper links caring with race-consciousness to form a foundation for critical praxis. Purpose -- The authors address the limitations of caring leadership by arguing for a race-conscious narrative ethics that promotes communal responsibility for students, with specific attention to racialized and marginalized students. Research Design – This conceptual paper draws on caring theory, feminism, womanism, and culturally responsive leadership. The paper considers racism within a United States context, drawing from theory developed in additional contexts. Analysis – The paper builds from the limitations of caring theory and seeks alternative caring ethics from critiques and African-American historical struggles for sustainable and anti-racist praxis. Results -- The authors argue that predispositions toward caring among teachers and school leaders are insufficient for the project of anti-racist education because of uncritical assumptions of sameness, misplaced empathy, and the evasion of race and racism. The resulting impersonal caring reproduces racist power relations and reinforces standardized and competitive notions of responsibility for children, forestalling opportunities for collective action. Conclusions -- As an alternative to impersonal caring, the authors explore the possibilities of deepening leaders' engagement in race-conscious caring through the significance of experience, the quality of caring relations, and the value of narrative ethics. This report critically reviews developments in geographical education through the themes of anti-racism and decoloniality, reflecting on the silences around these issues across previous progress reports and arguing that the present moment might be understood in terms of a decolonial turn. Publication trends and increasing attention associated with the turn are unevenly distributed, contested and attenuated by structural issues surrounding the recruitment and retention of more diverse geographers. Drawing on theories of antiracist pedagogy, pandemic pedagogy, and racial identity development, this article demonstrates the benefits of campus-wide virtual conversations, arguing that they provide students in particular with salient opportunities to synthesize antiracist theory and praxis while further developing their racial identities. Using data from two such campus conversations, "Antiracism, Intersectionality, and Empowerment" and "Racial Trauma and White Fragility," we offer a series of effective strategies, lessons learned, and preliminary antiracist outcomes. We suggest that campus-wide virtual forums on antiracism assist in building the interracial, intergenerational, and interdisciplinary coalitions necessary to begin to institutionalize antiracist praxis in a predominantly white university setting. Underscored by a long overdue call to challenge racism in teacher education (TE), we set forth to examine our own university TE classrooms to understand how we are both perpetuating and disrupting systemic racism and decentering whiteness, such that we can move toward sustained antiracist pedagogy for ourselves, our institutions, teacher candidates, and school communities. Undergirded by Critical Race Theory, this paper presents the development of an Antiracist Pedagogy Course Audit– a tool to develop instructor capacity to engage in critically reflective practices in five key areas: 1) Instructor Critical Consciousness; 2) Understanding Students' Backgrounds and Experiences; 3) Course Readings and Content; 4) Classroom Learning Environment; and 5) Assignments and Assessments. In the summer of 2020, powerful protests against police brutality took place throughout the United States in response to the unlawful deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the shooting of Jacob Blake. Though the types of protests ranged from local grassroot organizations walking the streets to athletes using their platforms to address the injustices, the protests had one goal in mind—to bring attention, awareness, and hopefully change to an unjust legal system that consistently and disproportionately affects unarmed Black people. The aim of this article is to focus on the responses of both LeBron James and Doc Rivers to the shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man who was shot seven times in the back by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), as informed by Black Critical Theory (BlackCrit), we argue that the dynamic words of these two Black men not only operate as an act of protest and an act of resistance, but also they provide pedagogical enactments for being and becoming antiracist. Training on suicide assessment and intervention in college counseling centers is crucial. The SAFE-T model is effective when teaching counselors in training (CITs) in training clinics on college campuses as students learn how to assess clients' suicide risk level. We share how the SAFE-T model, in tandem with anti-racist counselor education practices, can enhance training in programs with training clinics based on our clinic at The Pennsylvania State University, followed by a case study to exemplify how to synthesize both practices for robust clinical outcomes. As premodern studies continues to develop tools for anti‐racist scholarship and pedagogy, this essay establishes the stakes of adaptation/appropriation studies especially committing to these efforts. Turning to the novel The Serpent of Venice, I demonstrate how appropriations that engage with race too often employ what I frame as racial euphemism: palliative engagements with race that sidestep questions of power and inequity. This is especially true for those attempting to maintain distance between Shakespeare and questions of race, and especially racism, often under the guise of historical accuracy. This racially euphemistic approach, therefore, disseminates to especially wide audiences white supremacist approaches to race. Premodern Critical Race Studies provides a vital activist framework, and with it, important conceptual and methodological tools, that help adaptation/appropriation scholars identify racial euphemism in premodern retellings, while at the same time offering appropriators scholarship that can help them craft anti‐racist appropriations that resist the idea of a race‐neutral past. In this autoethnography inquiry, seven counselor educators from diverse intersectionalities discuss how they leverage their selfhood to promote antiracist counselor education. Based on two cycles of pattern coding, the authors identified themes of perceiving, experiencing, creating, and facilitating. Implications for future research and practice are offered. This study sought to explore the skills white social work students need to develop in order to cultivate an embodied anti-racist practice. Forty-one social work students (approximately half white and half students of color) at a public university participated in semi-structured focus groups to discuss their experiences with anti-racist education and practice in their social work education. A predominant theme observed from these focus groups was the difficulty that white social work students have developing trust and relationships. Findings revealed that these students need guidance on how to build trust and develop relationships before they can engage in learning other anti-racist practice skills. The authors propose offering a future course that will help white social work students to develop these skills through pilot-testing a few embodied anti-racist competencies related to trust and relationship-building. Studies have suggested that faculty in higher education lack the preparation, training, tools, and collaboration to be effective anti-racist educators. This conceptual paper presents a new framework for social work faculty to consider as they evolve their anti-racist pedagogy. The history of the priorities and professionalization of social work is explored along with the origins and theoretical influences of social work education and accreditation, the inequitable system and structure of higher education, and the racial identity, lived experience, and education of individual educators. The proposed conceptual framework centers on practical strategies for increasing faculty capacity, building faculty reflexivity, and scaffolding faculty ability for social work anti-racist pedagogy. Strategies for increasing faculty capacity include professional development and training, places to process, and policy and support. Strategies for building faculty reflexivity focus on applying racial consciousness, assessing values, and adopting humility. Strategies for anti-racist pedagogy skills include building intentional class culture, braving collaborative learning, and banking on resistance. This article explores the significant role that Holocaust studies can play in higher educational contexts within an anti-racist pedagogical approach. Emphasis is placed on understanding the unique position of Jews in relation to anti-racist theoretical perspectives and on providing recommendations for incorporating critical analysis of anti-Semitism through the study of the Holocaust. In this manuscript, we (a racially diverse team of teacher educators) describe a study that reveals how five white faculty members in a large urban college of education experienced a two-day workshop on antiracism offered by a local antiracist coalition and the impact of the workshop in relation to their roles as teacher educators with a commitment to learning about and enacting antiracist pedagogies. Using qualitative methodologies including semi-structured, one-on-one interviews, we offer an underrepresented view of the tensions and possibilities of faculty learning to challenge whiteness in the academy by building antiracist pedagogies into their teacher education courses. Guided by a framework combining scholarship on critical consciousness and anti-racism in education, this narrative inquiry study sought to understand how practitioners within Gender and Sexuality Centers (GSCs) perceive their engagement with anti-racism. Centering the stories of 20 GSC professionals, findings revealed the racialized differences in practitioners' motivations, how professionals conceptualized anti-racism actions as involving and extending beyond programming for people of color, as well as how they engaged in reflection with themselves and others. Dismantling racism in health care demands that medical education promote racial justice throughout all stages of medical training. However, racial bias can be fostered unintentionally, influencing the way we make decisions as clinicians with downstream effects on patient health and health equity. The development of any anti-racism curriculum in medicine requires the ability to identify racial bias in practices we have not previously recognized as explicitly racist or unjust. There has been much controversy surrounding critical race theory (CRT) and the discussion of race and racism in education. The national emergence of racial injustices such as state-sanctioned violence, police killings of people of color, schools' pipeline to prison, and COVID-19 racial disparities, in addition to racial justice movements such as #BlackLivesMatter, #SayHerName, and #BlackAndMissing has ignited the need for the social work profession to bring awareness to the pervasiveness of race and to fully acknowledge the role of white supremacy on education, social systems, institutions, legal systems, and culture. This article highlights the need for social work education to develop anti-racist education and practice and increase awareness of white supremacy in the United States. PURPOSE We undertook a study to evaluate the current state of pedagogy on antiracism, including barriers to implementation and strengths of existing curricula, in undergraduate medical education (UME) and graduate medical education (GME) programs in US academic health centers. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study with an exploratory qualitative approach using semistructured interviews. Participants were leaders of UME and GME programs at 5 institutions participating in the Academic Units for Primary Care Training and Enhancement program and 6 affiliated sites from November 2021 to April 2022. RESULTS A total of 29 program leaders from the 11 academic health centers participated in this study. Three participants from 2 institutions reported the implementation of robust, intentional, and longitudinal antiracism curricula. Nine participants from 7 institutions described race and antiracism-related topics integrated into health equity curricula. Only 9 participants reported having "adequately trained" faculty. Participants mentioned individual, systemic, and structural barriers to implementing antiracism-related training in medical education such as institutional inertia and insufficient resources. Fear related to introducing an antiracism curriculum and undervaluing of this curriculum relative to other content were identified. Through learners and faculty feedback, antiracism content was evaluated and included in UME and GME curricula. Most participants identified learners as a stronger voice for transformation than faculty; antiracism content was mainly included in health equity curricula. CONCLUSIONS Inclusion of antiracism in medical education requires intentional training, focused institutional policies, enhanced foundational awareness of the impact of racism on patients and communities, and changes at the level of institutions and accreditation bodies. Many sexuality educators in the United States have noted that current sex education models do not meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student body, and they have begun advocating for anti-racist sex education. Many sexuality instructors, however, work in public schools that require the use of prevention-focused, evidence-based sexuality curricula. This article explores the unique challenges for sexuality instructors in incorporating anti-racist content into the public school classroom. It outlines the intersections of racism and sexuality to manifest the need for anti-racist sex education and offers five strategies for sexuality instructors wishing to incorporate anti-racist frameworks into the evidence-based sex education classroom. This article presents two extension activities, a dialogue circle and video poems, on the topic of racism. Such activities were part of the VI Week of Art and Culture at IFSC Araranguá. The general objective was to promote reflections on racism, encouraging anti-racist education through the reading and discussion of works by black authors. The contents of the conversation circle and the video poems were presented by high school students, possibly allowing the classroom reflections to reach a wider audience, such as the institution's servers, other students, family members and the external community of IFSC Araranguá. It was observed that the activities provided moments of reflection among its participants, according to the qualitative data collection through a questionnaire with open and closed questions. Based on the concept of transformative listening by García (2017) that views listening as a form of decolonial work that must take place in writing centers, the article examines colonial thinking and contingency as toxic preexisting conditions of writing center ecology that hinder our ability to listen to marginalized multilingual voices. Recognizing the commonality between multilingualism and contingency, both as ignored marginalized intersecting identities in the hierarchy of the racialized and corporatized university system, the article describes the complexity of engaging contingent workers in decolonial work and listening. Further, it argues that contingency creates significant barriers to the type of antiracist and decolonial work that García calls for that cultivates transformative listening. The article proposes specific types of collaborative training and partnerships that writing centers should invest in to foster decolonial listening and work while addressing the material constraints faced by contingent faculty and staff.
