The objective of this study was to investigate the antioxidant activity and the homology of peptides extracted from dry-cured Xuanwei and Jinhua ham. The antioxidant activity of crude peptides was assessed by ORAC and ABTS assays and the scavenging effects on DPPH and O 2− free radicals. LC-ESI-Q-TOF-MS/MS was used to analyze the peptide composition. Based on the identified peptides, homologous proteins were matched by the Peaks software. Overall, 243 and 213 peptides were identified with their parent proteins in Xuanwei and Jinhua dry-cured hams. Based on the ORAC and TEAC values, XHP showed higher antioxidant ability than JHP ( P  < 0.05). After further purification by G-15 chromatography, the results indicate that the oligopeptides with less than 1000 Da had greater antioxidant activity than the other two fractions. Homology-based proteomics showed that the majority of peptides originated from myosin which accounted for 26% in XHP and 32% in JHP respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Asp‐Leu‐Glu‐Glu (DLEE) is one of the antioxidant peptides purified from Chinese dry‐cured Xuanwei ham in our previous study. In the current work, the stability in a simulated digestion system, the transportation pathway and the antioxidant ability of DLEE were further investigated in a Caco‐2 cell monolayer. In the simulated gastrointestinal digestion system, no oligopeptides were generated. In the transport trial, the inhibitors cytochalasin D increased the transport of DLEE across the Caco‐2 cell monolayer, with Papp values of 3.22 × 10−6 cm s−1. A decreased expression occludin was observed with the DLEE incubation in the cell monolayer, and the antioxidant activity showed to be increased gradually in basolateral side. This study indicates that the absorption of DLEE could mainly occur via paracellular transport and provides information about its antioxidant activity after being absorbed across a cell monolayer. Calcineurin B-like-interacting protein kinase (CIPK) is a serine/threonine kinase, which transmits the Ca2+ signal sensed by CBL proteins. A CdtCIPK21 showing highly identical to OsCIPK21 in rice was isolated from triploid bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon × Cynodon transvaalensis). CdtCIPK21 transcript could be detected in roots, rhizomes, stems, stolons, and leaves, with highest level in roots. It was induced by salinity, dehydration and chilling, but reduced by ABA treatment. Transgenic rice plants overexpressing CdtCIPK2 1 had decreased salt and drought tolerance as well as ABA sensitivity but increased chilling tolerance. Lower SOD and CAT activities was observed in transgenic lines under salinity and drought stress conditions, but higher levels under chilling stress. Similarly, lower levels of proline concentration and P5CS1 and P5CS2 transcripts were maintained in transgenic lines under salinity and drought stresses, and higher levels were maintained under chilling. In addition, transgenic lines had lower transcript levels of ABA-independent genes (OsDREB1A , OsDREB1B , and OsDREB2A) and ABA responsive genes (OsLEA3 , OsLIP9 , and OsRAB16A) under salinity and drought but higher levels under chilling compared with WT. The results suggest that CdtCIPK21 regulates salt and drought tolerance negatively and chilling tolerance positively, which are associated with the altered ABA sensitivity, antioxidants, proline accumulation and expression of ABA-dependent and ABA-independent stress responsive genes. The biochemical properties of buckwheat honey, including contents of sugars, proteins, total phenols, methylglyoxal (MGO), minerals and phenolic compounds, were determined in comparison with those of manuka honey. Buckwheat honey has higher contents of sugars, proteins and total phenols but a lower content of MGO than manuka honey. Buckwheat honey contains abundant minerals involved in a number of vital functions of the human body as does manuka honey, and has even higher contents of Fe, Mn and Zn. In buckwheat honey, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, chlorogenic acid and p-coumaric acid are the dominant phenolic compounds. Moreover, the antibacterial and cellular antioxidant activities of buckwheat honey were compared with those of manuka honey. Buckwheat honey exhibits antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, comparable with manuka honey, and the cellular antioxidant activity of buckwheat honey is higher than that of manuka honey. Recent studies have indicated that protein hydrolysates have broad biological effects. In the current study we describe a novel antioxidative peptide, FDPAL, from soybean protein isolate (SPI). The aim of this study was to purify and characterize an antioxidative peptide from SPI and determine its antioxidative mechanism. LC–MS/MS was used to isolate and identify the peptide from SPI. The sequence of the peptide was determined to be Phe-Asp-Pro-Ala-Leu (FDPAL, 561 Da). FDPAL can cause significant enhancement of resistance to oxidative stress both in cells as well as simple organisms. In Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), FDPAL can up-regulate the expression of certain genes associated with resistance. The antioxidant activity of this peptide can be attributed to the presence of a specific amino acid sequence. Results from our work suggest that FDPAL can facilitate potential applications of proteins carrying this sequence in the nutraceutical, bioactive material and clinical medicine areas, as well as in cosmetics and health care products. An aqueous aged garlic extract (AGE) was prepared by soaking sliced garlic in water for 20 days at room temperature (23–25 °C). In order to locate the antioxidant ingredients of the aqueous AGE, an activity-guided fractionation approach using ABTS assay, DPPH assay and FRAP assay were conducted to guide the fractionation by means of extraction, column chromatography and semi-preparative HPLC. Some phenols and organosulfur compounds were identified as antioxidants in AGE by GC–MS. Furthermore, UV, IR, ESI-MS, NMR and specific rotation experiments led to the identification of l -phenylalanine, l -tryptophan, (3S)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro- β -carboline-3-carboxylic acid, (1S,3S)-1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro- β -carboline-3-carboxylic acid, and (1R,3S)-1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro- β -carboline-3-carboxylic acid as the major antioxidants in the AGE. The EC 50 values of these purified tetrahydro- β -carboline derivatives were 0.625–1.334 μmol/mL and 1.063–2.072 μmol/mL in ABTS assay and DPPH assay, respectively. Beneficial health effects of polyphenols depend on their daily consumption which may reflect the dietary pattern of a population. In this way, the objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro and cellular antioxidant activity of Feijoada whole meal compared to its individual ingredients. Kale was the ingredient with the highest total phenolic content and in vitro antioxidant activity. Black beans and rice were the main sources of bound phenolics, accounting for approximately 50% of the total phenolic content in each one. Black beans were also the main providers of phenolics in the feijoada whole meal. Dose dependent effect was observed for black beans, kale, and orange when cellular antioxidant activity (CAA) was measured, being orange the ingredient with the lowest EC 50 value. Antiproliferative activity using HepG2 cells was only observed for the orange and kale extracts at 60 mg/ml. Feijoada whole meal extract and the combination of individual ingredients had no effect in this cancer cell line compared to the control. The interaction among ingredients composing a meal as for whole meals itself should be used more often as an approach to understand the relationship between dietary pattern and health benefits. Understanding the influence of processing operations such as drying/dehydration, canning, extrusion, high hydrostatic pressure, pulsed electric field, and ohmic heating on the phytochemicals of fruits, vegetables, and grains is important in retaining the health benefiting properties of these antioxidative compounds in processed food products. Most of the previous investigations in the literature on the antioxidants of fruits, vegetables, and grains have shown that food-processing operations reduced the antioxidants of the processed foods, which is also the usual consumer perception. However, in the last decade some articles in the literature reported that the evaluation of nutritional quality of processed fruits and vegetables not only depend on the quantity of vitamin C but should include analyses of other antioxidant phytochemicals and antioxidant activity. Thermal processing increased the total antioxidant activity of tomato and sweet corn. Most importantly, analysis also depends on the condition, type, and mechanism of antioxidant assays used. This review aims to provide concise information on the influence of various thermal and nonthermal food-processing operations on the stability and kinetics of health beneficial phenolic antioxidants of fruits, vegetables, and grains. Commonly consumed foxtail millet varieties Jingu28 and Jingu34 were compared in terms of phytochemical composition, antioxidant property, and antiproliferative activity. The cellular antioxidant activity (CAA) was evaluated based on HepG2 cell cultivation. Antiproliferative properties against HepG2 and MDA cell were assayed by methylene blue assay. Total phenolic content (TPC) was 78.79 and 114.22 mg gallic acid equiv/100 g DW in Jingu28 and Jingu34. Both varieties contained ferulic acid, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid and p -coumaric acid, syringic acid. Xanthophylls and zeaxanthin were also detected. Peroxyl radical scavenging capacity of the foxtail millet were 228.13 (Jingu28) and 355.03 (Jingu34) μmol of vitamin C equiv/100 g, respectively. CAA values of the foxtail millet varieties ranged from 1.52 to 8.97 μmol quercetin equiv/100 g DW. Mactra veneriformishas been used as seafood and traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years in China. In the present study, hydrolysate was prepared from waste proteins ofM. veneriformisby trypsin treatment. The protective effect of hydrolysate on the defense system against oxidative stress was investigated by estimating the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) level in normal mice. The antioxidant activity of hydrolysate was investigated in D-galactose-induced aging mice by estimating the SOD and glutathione peroxidases (GSH-px) activity and MDA level. Amino acid composition and molecular weight distribution were also determined. These investigations suggest that hydrolysate derived from by-products ofM. veneriformispossess antioxidant activity and may be attributed to elevation of the activity of antioxidase and enhanced antioxidant defenses. Analysis of peptide components of protein hydrolysates is often difficult due to the lack of suitable analytical methods. In the present study, an UHPLC–Q-TOF MS/MS method was developed and used to identify peptides derived from the protein hydrolysate of Mactra veneriformis . The peptide sequences were deduced by de novo sequencing based on MS/MS fragmentation data. A total of 21 peptides, four nucleobases, and one nucleoside were identified from the hydrolysate using this method. These peptides were chemically synthesised and showed antioxidant activity in radical scavenging assays. The antioxidant capacity of cell-free extracts from Lactobacillus plantarum NJAU-01 obtained by using different cell disruption methods was determined. The efficacy of various methods, including high-pressure treatment (HIP), lysozyme combined with ultrasound treatment (LCU), glycine treatment (GLY), and frozen-thawed treatment (FAT) was studied. The results showed that the bacterial suspension in the HIP group visibly had the least intact cells per visual field compared with the other groups, followed by the LCU group. The HIP group possessed 5.12 lg CFU/mL viable bacteria, which was significantly lower than that of the other groups after cell disruption from the initial 9 lg CFU/mL. The protein concentration of the cell-free extract from the HIP group was higher than that of the other groups with abundant protein bands and band intensities. The HIP group presented significantly higher total antioxidant capacity and superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities than the other groups. Our data suggest that HIP can be a preferable method to obtain cell-free extracts with excellent antioxidant capacity for further exploring the underlying antioxidant mechanism of Lactobacillus plantarum NJAU-01. ● Four methods are used for cell wall disruption of Lactobacillus plantarum NJAU-01. ● High pressure group had visibly less intact cell compared to other groups. ● The high pressure treatment released more proteins form L. There is strong scientific evidence suggesting that regular consumption of fruits and vegetables is negatively associated with risk of developing chronic diseases. The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend at least 9 servings of fruits and vegetables a day based on a 2000 kcal diet. However, the average person in the United States consumes 3.6 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. In order to achieve the goal of at least 9 servings, we should continue educating Americans about the health benefits of fruits and vegetables and recommend consumers to eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. The key is to increase the amount up to 9 to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables a day in all forms. Fresh, cooked, and processed fruits and vegetables including frozen and canned, 100% fruit juices, 100% vegetable juices, and dried fruits are all considered as servings of fruits and vegetables. A wide variety of fruits and vegetables provide a range of nutrients and different bioactive compounds including phytochemicals (phenolics, flavonoids, and carotenoids), vitamins (vitamin C, folate, and provitamin A), minerals (potassium, calcium, and magnesium), and fibers. More and more evidence suggests that the health benefits of fruits and vegetables are attributed to the additive and synergistic interactions of the phytochemicals present in whole foods by targeting multiple signal transduction pathways. Therefore, consumers should obtain nutrients and bioactive compounds from a wide variety of whole foods for optimal nutrition and health well-being, not from expensive dietary supplements. Phenolics are suggested to be the major bioactive compounds responsible for the health benefits of tea. Seven types of tea were extracted using boiling water. The extraction kinetics was investigated. To more fully characterise the antioxidant profiles and possible associated health benefits of these tea types, the total water-soluble solid content, phenolics, flavonoids, and antioxidant and antiproliferative activities were quantified. Green tea leaves ( GTL) were found to have the highest phenolic content (128.7 ± 1.7 mg g−1 , P < 0.05), followed by teas of decaffeinated green tea bag (d GTB), green tea bag ( GTB), black tea bag ( BTB), decaffeinated BTB, black tea leaves and oolong tea leaves ( OTL). Among the three leaf teas, GT displayed the greatest antioxidant activity (4850.2 ± 60.7 μmol g−1, P < 0.05), followed by black tea ( BT) and oolong tea ( OT). As for the four bag teas, decaffeinated GT possessed the strongest antioxidant activity (4431.1 ± 335.0 μmol g−1, P < 0.05), followed by GT, BT and decaffeinated BT. The results display that phenolic/flavonoid content well correlated with antioxidant activity. Proliferation of three human cancer cells was significantly inhibited in a dose-dependent manner after exposure to some tea extracts. Abstract: Procyanidins are abundant in sorghum episperm. In this study, the effects of procyanidins from Sorghum bicolor (L.) moench episperm (sorghum procyanidins, SPC) in preventing dental caries were investigated through analysis on SPCs’ effects on cariogenic bacteria and ability in scavenging superoxide anion free radicals. In addition, the SPC with activity in preventing dental caries were identified. The ESI-MS/MS analysis results revealed that the compositions of SPC purified by macroporous resin were dimmers, trimers, tetramers, pentamers and hexamers of procyanidins and catechin/epicatechin monomers. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of SPC on Streptococcus mutans (Ingbritt C) and Streptococcus sobrinus 6715 were 8 and 16mg/ml, respectively. The SPC had a remarkable inhibition effect (P <0.05) on acid production of S. sobrinus (Ingbritt C) and S. mutans 6715 compared with the control group, and a dose-dependent relationship was observed. By increasing the concentration of SPC in the experimental condition (200–600mg/L), the scavenging ratio of superoxide anion radicals increased significantly, indicating that SPC could be used as a potential dental-caries-preventative medicine with its antibacterial and antioxidant ability. Abstract: Cornu Bubali (water buffalo horn, WBH) has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for thousands of years. In the present study, three peptides with antioxidant properties were purified from aqueous extract of Cornu Bubali (water buffalo horn, WBH) by consecutive chromatographic methods including gel filtration chromatography, ion-exchange chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography. The sequences of the three peptides were identified to be Gln-Tyr-Asp-Gln-Gly-Val (WBH-1, 708Da), Tyr-Glu-Asp-Cys-Thr-Asp-Cys-Gly-Asn (WBH-2, 1018Da) and Ala-Ala-Asp-Asn-Ala-Asn-Glu-Leu-Phe-Pro-Pro-Asn (WBH-3, 1271Da) by matrix assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight/time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-LIFT-TOF/TOF MS). The antioxidant activity of these peptides was tested using 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging assay directly. Methylthiazol tetrazolium (MTT) assay and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release assay were also used to evaluate the protection of peptides against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) induced injury. The results showed that these peptides could reduce the DPPH radical and protect rat cerebral microvascular endothelial cells (rCMECs) against H2O2-induced injury, thus demonstrating that these peptides had antioxidant activity. These results suggest that WBH-1, WBH-2 and WBH-3, isolated from the aqueous extract of water buffalo horn are natural antioxidants and may contribute to the efficacy of WBH. Cornu Bubali (water buffalo horn, WBH) is an animal-derived product which is widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for dispelling heat, relieving convulsions and cooling blood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the antipyretic activity of WBH aqueous extract and its potential mechanism. Two hyperthermia models, yeast-induced (infectious) and skimmed milk-induced (noninfectious) hyperthermia were employed to evaluate the antipyretic effect and the results showed that rectal temperature of hyperthermia animals was decreased significantly after oral administration of WBH extract. The production of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)-induced prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in rat cerebral microvascular endothelial cells (rCMECs) was inhibited by WBH extract in the concentrations of 10 μg/ml and 100 μg/ml. The WBH extract protected rCMECs survival from hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced toxicity and inhibited the H2O2-induced leakage of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) enzyme release at a dose ranging from 5 μg/ml to 100 μg/ml. It could also increase the superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) enzyme activities. The results suggest that Cornu Bubali exhibits antipyretic activity on both infectious and noninfectious hyperthermia. The antipyretic activity of WBH may be due to the effects on enhancing antioxidation enzyme activities, decreasing PGE2 production, and protecting the rCMECs against H2O2-induced injury. Abstract: A sensitive and specific reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection (RP-UV-HPLC) method has been developed and validated for the identification and quantification of pinocembrin in rat plasma using chrysin as the internal standard. Following protein precipitation with acetonitrile, the analytes were separated by the mobile phase 0.01M ammonium acetate (pH 4.0)–methanol (35:65, v/v) with an Agilent TC-C18 column (5μm, 4.6mm×150mm) at a flow rate of 1ml/min, column temperature 40°C and detection wavelength 290nm. A good linear relationship was obtained in the concentration range studied (0.07–133.33μg/ml, r =0.9995). The lowest limit of quantification (LLOQ) was 66.7ng/ml and the lowest limit of detection (LLOD) was 25ng/ml. Average recoveries ranged from 93.9 to 97.8% in plasma at the concentrations of 0.33 and 33.33μg/ml. Intra- and inter-batch relative standard deviations were 0.15–2.03 and 1.18–9.96%, respectively. Abstract: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in most industrialized countries. Cranberries were evaluated for their potential roles in dietary prevention of CVD. Cranberry extracts were found to have potent antioxidant capacity preventing in vitro LDL oxidation with increasing delay and suppression of LDL oxidation in a dose-dependent manner. The antioxidant activity of 100 g cranberries against LDL oxidation was equivalent to 1000 mg vitamin C or 3700 mg vitamin E. Cranberry extracts also significantly induced expression of hepatic LDL receptors and increased intracellular uptake of cholesterol in HepG2 cells in vitro in a dose-dependent manner. This suggests that cranberries could enhance clearance of excessive plasma cholesterol in circulation. We propose that additive or synergistic effects of phytochemicals in cranberries are responsible for the inhibition of LDL oxidation, the induced expression of LDL receptors, and the increased uptake of cholesterol in hepatocytes. Background: Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) can cause serious damage to the human body and may cause various chronic diseases. Studies have found that lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have antioxidant and anti-aging effects, and are important resources for the development of microbial antioxidants. This paper was to explore the potential role of an antioxidant strain, Lactobacillus plantarum NJAU-01 screened from traditional dry-cured meat product Jinhua Ham in regulating D-galactose-induced subacute senescence of mice. A total of 48 specific pathogen free Kun Ming mice (SPF KM mice) were randomly allocated into 6 groups: control group with sterile saline injection, aging group with subcutaneously injection of D-galactose, treatments groups with injection of D-galactose and intragastric administration of 107, 108, and 109 CFU/mL L. plantarum NJAU-01, and positive control group with injection of D-galactose and intragastric administration of 1 mg/mL Vitamin C. Results: The results showed that the treatment group of L. plantarum NJAU-01 at 109 CFU/mL showed higher total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and the antioxidant enzymatic activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and catalase (CAT) than those of the other groups in serum, heart and liver. In contrast, the content of the oxidative stress marker malondialdehyde (MDA) showed lower levels than the other groups (P < 0.05). The antioxidant capacity was improved with the supplement of the increasing concentration of L. plantarum NJAU-01. Conclusions: Thus, this study demonstrates that L. plantarum NJAU-01 can alleviate oxidative stress by increasing the activities of enzymes involved in oxidation resistance and decreasing level of lipid oxidation in mice. BACKGROUND: Blueberries and apples exhibit favorable bioactivity and health benefits as a result of their rich phytochemicals. Natural phytochemicals exist in complex forms, but there are few reports on whether have additive, synergistic or antagonistic effects between different phytochemicals. The present study aimed to elucidate the synergistic effects of blueberry extract (BE) and apple peel extract (APE) together with respect to inhibiting the proliferation of HepG2 liver cancer cells. Meanwhile, phytochemical characterization of BE and APE was conducted by HPLC, and total antioxidant activity was determined via a cellular antioxidant activity assay, oxygen radical absorption capacity assay and peroxy radical scavenging capacity assay. RESULTS: The results showed that BE and APE were rich in phytochemicals and had potent antioxidant activities, which synergistically inhibited cell proliferation. In the bilateral combination, the dose reduction index value increased by two‐fold, and the combination index value at 95% inhibition was less than 1. Additionally, BE + APE supplementation could promote the expression levels of p53 and c‐myc genes. In conclusion, the BE and APE had strong antioxidant activity and exhibited synergistic inhibition against proliferation of HepG2 cells. Walnut oligopeptides (WOPs) intake is associated with the augment of the antioxidant defense system and immune system. The chief object of this study is to evaluate the radioprotective effect of walnut oligopeptides extracted from walnut seed protein against 60Coγ-irradiation induced damage in mice. Female BALB/c mice were administered WOPs through drinking water for 14 days until a single dose of whole-body 60Coγ-irradiation. The 30-day survival test was carried out in the first group (8 Gy), and the other two groups (3.5 Gy) were sacrificed at 3 days and 14 days post-irradiation. Blood and organ samples of mice in the three groups were collected, the histopathological analysis and immunohistochemistry were conducted. The number of peripheral blood leukocytes, bone marrow DNA content, inflammatory cytokines, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal permeability were measured. We found that the administration of WOPs augmented antioxidant defense system, accelerated hematopoietic recovery and showed the significant trend toward higher survival rate and less weight loss compared with non-administrated control mice. In addition, WOPs administration appeared to be important to limit IR-induced splenocyte apoptosis and inflammatory cascade as well as reduce intestine epithelial barrier dysfunction and promote epithelial integrity. Oxidative stress is one of the potential causes of nervous system disease. Ginseng extract possesses excellent antioxidant activity; however, little research on the function of the ginseng fibrous root. This study aimed to investigate the neuroprotective effects of ginseng fibrous root to alleviate the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) against oxidative stress. Ginseng fibrous root enzymatic hydrolysate (GFREH) was first prepared by digesting ginseng fibrous roots with alkaline protease. In vitro, the GFREH showed antioxidant activities in free radical scavenging mechanisms. With a cellular model of AD, GFREH inhibited the increase in Ca2+ levels and intracellular ROS content, maintained the balance of mitochondrial membrane potential, and relieved L-glutamic acid-induced neurotoxicity. In vivo, GFREH improved the survival rate of Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) under oxidative stress, upregulated SOD-3 expression, and reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) content. Therefore, our findings provide evidence for the alleviation effect of GFREH against oxidative stress in neuroprotection, which may accelerate the development of anti-Alzheimer's drugs and treatments in the future. The magnetic NiFe 2 O 4 /N, O co-doped porous carbon (MNPC) material was triumphantly fabricated using a combined in-situ surface chelation and pyrolysis method. The resultant MNPC composite exhibits a superior OXD-like activity, which can effectively oxidize 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) for yielding colorimetric/temperature dual-signal (CTDS) in absence of H 2 O 2. This CTDS output sensor was successfully used for the determination of ascorbic acid and tannic acid. The proposed CTDS sensor with good specificity and high sensitivity can satisfy different on-site analysis requirements. Interestingly, the MNPC as a sustainable filler was further used for improving packaging properties of polyvinyl alcohol film. It is evident from various epidemiological studies that consumption of fruits and vegetables is essential to maintain health and in the disease prevention. Present study was designed to examine phenolic contents and antioxidant properties of three varieties of Crataegus pinnatifida (Chinese hawthorn). Shanlihong variety exhibited elevated levels of total phenolics and flavonoid contents, including free and bond phenolics. Procyanidin B 2 was most abundant phenolic compound in all samples, followed by epicatechin, chlorogenic acid, hyperoside, and isoquercitrin. The free ORAC values, and free hydro-PSC values were 398.3–555.8 μmol TE/g DW, and 299.1–370.9 μmol VCE/g DW, respectively. Moreover, the free cellular antioxidant activity (CAA) values were 678–1200 μmol of QE/100 g DW in the no PBS wash protocol, and 345.9–532.9 μmol of QE/100 g DW in the PBS wash protocol. The present study evaluated whether acute consumption of freeze concentrated yerba mate ( Ilex paraguariensis A. St. Hil.) infusion (CM) promotes improvement on the antioxidant and lipid peroxidation parameters in healthy individuals when compared to the traditional mate infusion (TM). In this cross-over study, 31 fasted volunteers ingested 200 mL of TM, CM, or water (control). Blood samples were withdrawn before and 1 h after beverages intake for the measurement of the antioxidant enzyme activities, catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), reduced glutathione (GSH), lipid peroxidation (LOOH), and antioxidant capacity of serum (FRAP assay). CM intake promoted significant enhancement of the CAT (28.7%), SOD (21.3%), and GPx (9.6%) activities, and increased the levels of GSH (8.8%) and serum antioxidant capacity (7.5%), while TM increased only GSH values (8.3%). Serum levels of LOOH did not change significantly after consumption of both mate infusions. Acute consumption of CM by healthy individuals improved the blood antioxidant defense systems more efficiently than the traditional yerba mate and did not promote pro-oxidant effects. This study aimed to explore the alliin, saccharides, antioxidant and some other physicochemical changes of black garlic during the thermal processing steps. The contents of alliin and polysaccharides decreased significantly after 10 days of heat treatment, whereas the content of reducing sugars increased correspondingly. The 57.14% of fructose, 6.78% of glucose and 7.62% of sucrose were mainly saccharides in black garlic to answer for its sweet taste. The color value of black garlic increased over time, whereas the pH decreased continually from 6.25 to 4.25 after heating at 70-80C for 10 days, which contributed a characteristic black appearance and a sour taste mouthfeel. The antioxidant activities, including 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrilhydrazyl, hydroxyl radical scavenging and ferric reducing/antioxidant power activities, increased gradually during thermal processing. Practical Applications Black garlic has been used as foods and herbal remedies mainly in Japan, Korea and China, which has a wide range of health benefits, significantly antioxidant properties. Various physicochemical changes have been found to take place during thermal processing of garlic, including alliin, allicin, saccharides, pH, color and antioxidant activities. This is the first study to investigate the changes in the molecular weight distribution of polysaccharides and the monosaccharide composition of black garlic. These changes in saccharide contents and composition could be utilized as quality factors for the production of black garlic. Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of superfine grinding on the physicochemical and antioxidant properties of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP). Superfine grinding treatment could decrease the average molecular weight (changed from 834.0, 85.2 and 70.6 to 538.5, 71.2 and 2.1, respectively), the spherical particle’s heights (changed from 0.86, 0.59 and 0.51nm to 0.74, 0.55 and 0.43nm, respectively) and the spherical particle’s diameter (changed from 98.33, 70.67 and 86.33nm to 88.67, 47.67 and 51.33nm, respectively) of LBP. After being superfine grinding treated, the ΔH values of LBP changed from −154.6, −136.5 and −105.0J/g to −220.8, −97.2 and −46.5J/g, respectively. The IC50 of LBP from treated materials on DPPH radical (4.96, 1.98 and 2.97mg/mL) and ABTS radical (2.25, 0.20 and 0.25mg/mL) were extremely lower than those of LBP from untreated materials. The results suggested that superfine grinding treatment enhanced LBP’s antioxidant activities. Molecular weight and solution behavior were key factors in polymer’s antioxidant activities. Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is one of the leading causes of death in the world. Oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathogenesis of alcohol-induced liver injury. Our previous results have found that oleanolic acid (OA), a liver protective agent, plays a potent antioxidant activity in hepatocyte. In the present study, the protective effects of OA co-administration on ethanol-induced oxidative injury in rats were investigated through detecting hepatic histopathology, antioxidant enzymes, ethanol metabolic enzymes and inflammatory factors. Preventions of ethanol-induced oxidative injury by OA were reflected by markedly decreased serum activities of AST, ALT and significantly increased the hepatic ATP level. In addition, the increase of the hepatic TG content, MDA level and the decrease of hepatic GSH level, SOD activity, CAT activity induced by ethanol were significantly inhibited by OA co-administration. Furthermore, OA could also elevate the protein expressions and nuclear translocation of antioxidant transcription factor Nrf-2 and then up-regulated antioxidant enzymes expressions of HO-1, SOD-1 and GR. Moreover, OA co-administration can significantly reduce the activity and expressions of CYP2E1 and ADH, which has characteristic of generation ROS mediated oxidative stress and acetaldehyde respectively. Furthermore, OA co-administration could inhibition of the generation of inflammatory factors TNF-α and IL-6. Those above results indicated that OA co-administration can protect rats against ethanol-induced liver injury by induction Nrf-2 related antioxidant to maintain redox balance and modulating the ethanol-metabolizing and inflammatory pathway. Crataegus pinnatifida , commonly known as hawthorn, is a plant species with a long history of medicinal use in traditional Chinese medicine. Hawthorn polysaccharides (HP) have gained worldwide attention due to their decent biological activities and potential health benefits. Their excellent antioxidant activity, antitumor activity, immunomodulatory activity, hypoglycemic effect and hypolipidemic effects, intestinal microbiota modulatory activity makes them valuable in the field of ethnopharmacological research. The purpose of the current review is to provide a systematic and comprehensive summary of the latest literatures and put forward the future perspectives on hawthorn polysaccharides in the context of its extraction, purification, structural characteristics and bioactivities. Furthermore, the underlying structure-bioactivity relationship of hawthorn polysaccharides was also explored and discussed. The current review would provide the important research underpinnings and the update the information for future development and application of hawthorn polysaccharides in the pharmaceutical and functional food industries. We use Google Scholar, CNKI, PubMed, Springer, Elsevier, Wiley, Web of Science and other online databases to search and obtain the literature on extraction, isolation, structural analysis and the biological activity of hawthorn polysaccharides published before October 2023. The key words are "extraction", "isolation and purification", "bioactivities", and " Crataegus pinnatifida polysaccharides ". Crataegus pinnatifida has been widely used for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, digestive disorders, inflammatory and oxidative stress in traditional Chinese medicine. Polysaccharides are the key active components of Crataegus pinnatifida which have gained widespread attention. The structure and bioactivity of polysaccharides from Crataegus pinnatifida varies in terms of raw materials, extraction methods and purification techniques. Crataegus pinnatifida polysaccharides possess diverse bioactivities, including antitumor, immunomodulatory, hypoglycemic activity, cardioprotective and antioxidant activities, among others. These biological properties can not only lay firm foundation for the treatment of diverse diseases, but also provide a theoretical basis for the in-depth study of the structure-activity relationship. In addition, the underlying structure-activity relationship is also explored and discussed, and further research and development of hawthorn polysaccharides are also prospected. As a natural compound, hawthorn polysaccharides has garnered significant attention and held immense research potential. Hawthorn polysaccharides can be obtained through different extraction methods, including hot water extraction method, ultrasonic extraction method and enzymatic extraction method etc. The structures of hawthorn polysaccharides have also been characterized and reported in numerous studies. Moreover, hawthorn polysaccharides exhibit a wide range of bioactivities, such as the antioxidant activity, the antitumor activity, the immunomodulatory activity, the hypoglycemic effect and the hypolipidemic effect, as well as the intestinal microbiota modulatory activity. Here, we examined the phytochemical profiles, antioxidant activity (AA), and antiproliferative activity (APA) of four Chinese bayberry (Myrica rubra Sieb. et Zucc.) pulp extracts. They were found to be rich in total phenolics content (TPC; 186.45 ± 5.42 to 498.94 ± 8.25 mg of gallic acid equiv./100 g FW) and total flavonoids content (TFC; 126.28 ± 4.18 to 194.35 ± 12.03 mg of catechin equiv./100 g FW). For all varieties, the free flavonoid/phenolic/anthocyanin contents were higher than that the bound fractions. Wild pink bayberry (WPB) displayed the highest values of TPC and TFC, and also showed the highest total antioxidant activity (TAA) as revealed by peroxyl radical scavenging capacity (PSC) (451.47 ± 8.01 µmol Vit. C equiv./100 g FW), and free cellular antioxidant activity (CAA) (184.99 ± 6.11 µmol quercetin equiv./100 g FW, no PBS wash; 117.78 ± 2.34 µmol quercetin equiv./100 g FW, PBS wash) assays. Bayberry extracts had a marked reduction in the APA of HepG2 cells, and WPB exhibited the lowest EC50 (8.50 ± 0.83 mg/ml) value, which was probably associated with cell cycle arrest and apoptosis induction. Practical Application: Chinese bayberry (Myrica rubra Sieb. et Zucc.) fruit is rich in natural phenolic compounds, which might be a functional ingredient in food and nutraceutical products. Fish skin gelatin was hydrolyzed with papain to produce antioxidant peptides. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to optimize the hydrolysis conditions (including enzyme to substrate ratio [E/S], hydrolysis time, and temperature). The highest degree of hydrolysis (DH) (50.1 ± 1.1%) was obtained at an E/S of 2% at 56.8 °C, 2.11 h, and was not significantly different from the predicted values within a 95% confidence interval. The highest 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) (96.8 ± 0.9%) and 2,2′-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS•+) (9.80 ± 0.11 mM Trolox [6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethychroman-2-carboxylic acid]) radical-scavenging activities of fish gelatin hydrolyzates were obtained at an E/S of 3% at 52.1 °C, 2.65 h, and both DPPH and ABTS•+ radical-scavenging activities were not significantly different from the predicted values 97.3% and 9.86 mM Trolox within the 95% confidence interval. Therefore, RSM is an efficient way to optimize fish gelatin hydrolysation and the resultant hydrolyzates show promise as antioxidant peptides. Practical Application: There is a growing interest in the use of fish gelatin as an alternative to mammalian gelatin. One potential use is as a source of widely acceptable functional compounds. In this study, a search for antioxidant peptides from fish gelatin prepared by an enzymatic method has been successfully done. This suggests that this is a practical way to obtain bioactive peptides. Abstract: Oleanolic acid (OA) is a natural triterpenoid, which has been used in Chinese medicine for the treatment of liver disorders for many years. Its pharmacological activities have been the focus of intense research in recent years. However, there is little research on the antioxidant activities of OA. In the present study, we aim to investigate whether OA produces its protective effects mainly through antioxidant mechanisms and whether OA plays as an antioxidant through quenching reactive oxygen species (ROS), inhibiting lipid peroxidation or stimulating cellular antioxidant defenses. In the in vitro antioxidant activity-assessing models, OA acted as not only a free radical-scavenger through direct chemical reactions but also a biological molecule, which may enhance the antioxidant defenses. tert-Butyl hydroperoxide (tBHP) induced ROS generation, damaged plasma membrane and decreased cell viability and the expression of key antioxidant enzymes and MAP kinases in QZG cells. OA ameliorated the oxidative injury induced by tBHP through increasing the generation of antioxidant (glutathione) and the expression of key antioxidant enzymes mediated by nuclear factorerythroid 2 p45-related factor 2 (Nrf2), in which process, activation of JNK and ERK, but not p38, was involved. The present study, for the first time, investigated the antioxidant activities of OA systematically. OA probably functions mainly through indirect biological effect and protects QZG cells against cytotoxicity induced by tBHP through increasing the generation of antioxidant and the expression of oxidative stress sensitive transcription factor-Nrf2, and MAP kinases, mainly JNK and ERK. Abstract: Grapes are rich in phenolics, flavonoids and resveratrol, which have been suggested to be responsible for their health benefits. The concentrations of phenolic, flavonoid, anthocyanins and resveratrol of 14 grape varieties grown in the Finger Lakes area of New York State were examined. Among the varieties tested, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir contained the highest total phenolic content with 424.6±3.8 and 396.8±12.4mg/100g, respectively. The total flavonoid content of Pinot Noir (301.8±6.2mg/100g) was around 3.1-fold higher than that of Baco Noir. Baco Noir had the highest resveratrol content (571±30μg/100g) of the varieties tested. Cabernet Franc possessed the highest antioxidant activity. Total antioxidant activities of grape extracts are well correlated with total phenolic content. The proliferation of Caco-2, HepG2 and MCF-7 human cancer cells was significantly inhibited in a dose-dependent manner after exposure to Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Catawba, Concord, Sheridan, Niagara and Riesling. The physical qualities, antioxidant content and activity, and antiproliferation activity of ‘Jewel’ strawberry fruit that were harvested at the white tip and red ripe maturity stages and stored in 65 or 95% relative humidity (RH) at 3 and 10°C for 12d were studied. Overall quality and firmness of fruit harvested at the red ripe stage declined more rapidly than at the white tip stage, and decreased more rapidly at 10°C than at 3°C in fruit of both maturity stages. RH did not affect fruit quality in any treatment. Lightness (L*) and hue angle decreased, and anthocyanin concentrations increased, more rapidly at 10°C than at 3°C in the white tip fruit. The L* of red ripe fruit decreased by day 3 and was maintained during the rest of the storage time. The initial anthocyanin concentrations of red ripe fruit were about five times greater than that in white tip fruit and declined during the storage. Total flavonoid and phenolic concentrations, and total antioxidant activity of fruit harvested at the white tip stage were greater than those harvested at the red ripe stage. These differences were maintained during the storage, except for red ripe fruit, where concentrations and activity decreased rapidly by day 12 in fruit stored at 10°C, especially at 95% RH. Total ascorbic acid concentrations of white tip fruit were lower than in red ripe fruit at harvest, but increased slightly over time, while those in red ripe fruit were relatively stable until they decreased at 10°C at 12d. Overall changes of total antioxidant activity were similar to those of total flavonoid and total phenolic concentrations, but not anthocyanin or ascorbic acid concentrations. Fruit quality was correlated with firmness and color attributes as well as with total flavonoid and phenolic concentrations and with antioxidant activity. A 50gL−1 concentration of strawberry extracts inhibited HepG2 human liver cancer cell proliferation by approximately 80%. The EC50 of antiproliferative activity of strawberry fruit value was not affected by the maturity stage at harvest or by storage temperature. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Age-related depletion of GSH levels and perturbations in its redox state may be especially deleterious to metabolically active tissues, such as the heart and brain. We examined the extent and the mechanisms underlying the potential age-related changes in cerebral and myocardial GSH status in young and old F344 rats and whether administration of (R)-α-lipoic acid (LA) can reverse these changes. Our results show that GSH/GSSG ratios in the aging heart and the brain declined by 58 and 66% relative to young controls, respectively (p<0.001). Despite a consistent loss in GSH redox status in both tissues, only cerebral GSH levels declined with age (p<0.01). To discern the potential mechanisms underlying this differential loss, the levels and the activities of γ-glutamylcysteine ligase (GCL) and cysteine availability were determined. There were no significant age-related changes in substrate or enzyme levels, or GCL activity when saturating amounts of substrates were provided. However, kinetic analysis of GCL in brains of old rats displayed a significant increase (p<0.05) in the apparent Km for cysteine (Km cys) vs. young rats (84.3 ± 25.4 vs. 179.0 ± 49.0; young and old, respectively), resulting in a 40% loss in apparent catalytic turnover of the enzyme. Thus, the age-related decline in total GSH appears to be mediated, in part, by a general decrement in GCL catalytic efficiency. Treating old rats with LA (40 mg/kg body wt; by i.p.) markedly increased tissue cysteine levels by 54% 12 h following treatment and subsequently restored the cerebral GSH levels. Moreover, LA improved the age-related changes in the tissue GSH/GSSG ratios in both heart and the brain. These results demonstrate that LA is an effective agent to restore both the age-associated decline in thiol redox ratio as well as increase cerebral GSH levels that otherwise decline with age. Phenolics, antioxidant activities, and antiproliferative properties of brown Hypsizygus marmoreus (brown HM) and white Hypsizygus marmoreus (white HM) were compared. The results showed that the contents of (+)‐catechin, gallic acid, and protocatechuic acid of brown HM were higher than those of white HM. Moreover, brown HM had greater cellular antioxidant activity (CAA), peroxyl radical scavenging capacity (PSC), and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) values than white HM, which demonstrated that brown HM presented a stronger antioxidant capacity. Both of brown HM and white HM showed remarkable antiproliferative activities against HepG2 cells and brown HM was proven to be the more effective. The flow cytometry results revealed that both of brown HM and white HM could induce G1 arrest and cell apoptotics in a dose‐dependent manner. In addition, CyclinD1, CDK4, and Bcl‐2 mRNA expression levels were downregulated with the treatment of brown HM or white HM. Taken together, our study revealed that brown HM afforded better antioxidant and antiproliferative activities than white HM and laid the foundation for potential application of Hypsizygus marmoreus as source of nutraceuticals and functional food products. Practical Application: A systematic assessment of the potential differences of phenolics, antioxidant, and antiproliferative activities between different Hypsizygus marmoreus varieties was carried out in the present study. Abstract Pesticides are a major cause of reduction in the global population of amphibians. This study investigates the effect of varying concentrations of cyproconazole (1 and 10 mg/L) on Rana nigromaculata during a chronic 90 days exposure period. High levels of cyproconazole (10 mg/L) induced declined body weight, short snout–vent length, slow metamorphic development and abnormal behavioral endpoints in R. nigromaculata tadpoles. Tadpoles exposed to 10 mg/L did not survive beyond 42 days. Abnormal behaviors were observed more frequently with exposure to the highest concentration of cyproconazole. Compared with controls, the concentrations of dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione (GSH) were significantly increased in tadpoles exposed to 1 mg/L cyproconazole. However, when the concentration of cyproconazole increased to 10 mg/L, concentrations of SOD, GSH and CAT activity began to decline. In addition, thyroid and gonad development were also affected at the gene and hormone level, with varied effects observed with different exposure levels and days. Exposure to cyproconazole at the lower level of 1 mg/L induced damage to histological structures of the thyroid gland. Stereoselective tissue distribution and bioaccumulation of cyproconazole was observed in tadpoles. The ranked order of bioaccumulation was: enantiomer -4 > 3> 2 > 1, with the level of cyproconazole highest in the gut. These findings reflect the toxicity of cyproconazole to R. nigromaculata and further our understanding of the effects of pesticide exposure on global amphibian population declines. Consumption of brown rice is associated with reduced risk of chronic diseases, which might be attributed to the presence of unique phytochemicals. This study aimed to evaluate phytochemicals profile, cellular antioxidant and anti-proliferative activities in glutinous and non-glutinous brown rice varieties of indica and japonica subspecies. In general, bound fractions of brown rice depicted significant variation levels of phytochemicals, antioxidant and anti-proliferative activities. Anti-proliferative activity of bound fraction, total antioxidant capacity and cellular antioxidant activity of non-glutinous type were significantly higher than glutinous type ( p  < 0.05). Summary: To have a better understanding of regulatory mechanism of carotenoid accumulation in sweetcorn (Zea mays L.), we analysed carotenoid profiles, expression patterns of carotenogenic genes and antioxidant activities in two genotypes of sweetcorn during kernel development. The results suggested that the expression of carotenogenic genes played an essential role in carotenoid accumulation and higher expression levels of carotenogenic genes obviously led to higher levels of total carotenoids. It was found that the expression of upstream genes (ZmPDS,ZmZDS and ZmCRTISO) had major influence on the content of total carotenoid during kernel development. The accumulation of lycopene was closely related to the coordination of upstream and downstream genes. The expression of ZmHYD and ZmZEP was influential on zeaxanthin accumulation, which was also influenced by the rate of ZmCHYB/ZmCHYE. Expression levels of ZmCHYE were still stable in order for α‐xanthophylls largely accumulated during kernel development. Lutein, zeaxanthin, α‐cryptoxanthin and β‐cryptoxanthin constituted the predominant carotenoids in sweetcorn. In this work, recovery of phenolics from sugarcane bagasse was performed and total phenolic content, total flavonoid content and antioxidant activities were measured. Four fractions were yielded after extraction with various solvents and ethyl acetate fraction was performed into further purification, producing 30 sub-fractions (G1–G30). Six compounds were isolated and their structures were identified by high resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS) and high definition nuclear magnetic resonance (HD-NMR) spectroscopy as p -coumaric acid, tricin, luteolin, tricin 7-O-β-glucopyranoside, protocatechuic acid and diosmetin 6-C-glucoside which was identified in this species for the first time. Tricin expressed highest antioxidant activity in ORAC assay (9.76 ± 1.01 μmol TE/μmol) but no antioxidant activity in PSC and CAA assays. The structure-activity relationship was discussed to elucidate the different activities of the isolated phenolics in ORAC and CAA assays. Luteolin, p -coumaric acid and protocatechuic acid showed antiproliferative effect against MCF-7 cells with the EC 50 at 28.45, 1856.90 and 3670.56 μM, respectively. In the present work, optimization of microwave-assisted extraction of polysaccharides from Sargassum thunbergii was investigated. The physicochemical properties, structural characteristics, and in vitro antioxidant and hypoglycemic activities were determined. The optimal extraction conditions with a yield of 2.84 ± 0.09% for extraction of polysaccharides (STP-1) were extraction time 23 min, microwave power 547 W, extraction temperature 80 °C, and the ratio of raw material to water 1:27 g/mL. STP-1 contained 32.7% of total carbohydrate, 1.86% of protein, and 15.2% of sulfates. STP-1 had a major molecular weight of 190.4 kDa, and comprised of arabinose, galactose, glucose, xylose, mannose, galacturonic acid, and glucuronic acid with molar percentages of 1.94, 30.7, 4.54, 23.2, 17.6, 8.11, and 13.9%, respectively. In addition, STP-1 showed strong antioxidant and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities, and could improve the glucose uptake in insulin-resistant HepG2 cells, suggesting that STP-1 can be exploited as a promising natural antioxidant and hypoglycemic agent. The phytochemical profiles and antioxidant activity of free, soluble-conjugated, and bound fractions of brown rice and its processed products (textured rice, cooked rice and rice noodle) were studied. Nineteen phenolic acids were identified. Trans -ferulic acid was the most abundant monomeric phenolic acid with trans-trans -8-O-4′ diferulic acid being most abundant diferulic acid. Processing increased the content of free phenolic acids, but decreased the content of soluble-conjugated phenolic acids. The content of bound phenolic acids was increased by improved extrusion cooking technology and cooking, but not affected by rice noodle extrusion. The total phenolic contents and antioxidant activities of free and soluble-conjugated fractions were decreased after processing, whereas those of bound fraction were increased by improved extrusion cooking technology and cooking, but not affected by rice noodle extrusion. Results indicated that whole foods designed for reducing chronic disease risk need to consider the effects of processing on phytochemical profiles and antioxidant activity of whole grains. The phytochemical content and antioxidant activity of eight varieties of brown rice (BR) are reported. The total phenolic contents of BR ranged from 72.45 to 120.13 mg of gallic acid equiv./100 g. The phenolics from bound fraction contributed 40.6–50.2% of the total phenolic content. The total flavonoid contents of BR ranged from 75.90 to 112.03 mg catechin equiv./100 g. The flavonoids from the bound fraction contributed 26.9–48.2% of total flavonoids. Trans -ferulic acid was the predominant phenolic acid in BR. Total trans -ferulic acid content ranged from 161.42 to 374.81 μg/100 g. The percentage of trans -ferulic acid in bound fraction ranged from 96.4% to 99.2%. Only α- and γ-tocopherols and -tocotrienols were detected in BR with α-tocopherol and γ-tocotrienol being the predominant. Phytochemical profiles, antioxidant and antiproliferative activities of berry extracts were evaluated and compared in four subspecies of Sea buckthorn ( Hippophaë rhamnoides L.). Among the subspecies, Hippophaë rhamnoides L. subsp. sinensis exhibited highest total phenolics content (38.7 ± 1.3 mg GA equiv./g DW) and corresponding total antioxidant activity. Whereas maximum cellular antioxidant and antiproliferative activities were determined in Hippophaë rhamnoides L. subsp . yunnanensis . Total antioxidant activity was significantly associated to total phenolics, isorhamnetin-3-rutinoside and isorhamnetin-3-glucoside. The cellular antioxidant activity and antiproliferative activity of phytochemicals were fairly correlated to phenolic acids and flavonoid aglycones. Lower median effective dose (EC 50 ) of individual compounds against human liver cancer HepG2 cells proliferation studies confirmed the better correlation between antiproliferative activity of Sea buckthorn extracts and flavonoid aglycones, including isorhamnetin, quercetin and kaempferol. Cellular antioxidant activity ( CAA) and inhibition of hepato-cellular carcinoma (HepG2) proliferation were evaluated for the first time in the pulp and peel of mango cultivars. Comparatively, peel had high flavonoids and tocopherols content and showed significant antioxidant activity. Among all the studied cultivars, the Xiao Tainong peel was predominant with highest fistein, mangiferin and alpha-tocopherol content and significant cellular antioxidant activity value 2986 ± 380 μmol QE/100 g FW. The HepG2 cells antiproliferation was maximum in the peel of Da Tainong and pulp of Aozhou with lowest EC50 values, 2.35 ± 0.65 (peel) and 185.4 ± 10.9 (pulp) mg mL−1, in a dose-dependent manner. Negative associations of flavonoids and tocopherol compounds with CAA and antiproliferative activity in mango confirmed synergistic, additive or antagonistic actions of phytochemicals. Irradiation therapy is markedly associated with intestinal injure and oxidant stress. This study aimed to investigate the effects of ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Mey.) oligopeptides (GOP) on irradiation-induced intestinal injury and antioxidant defense in mice. BALB/c mice (8 weeks old) were randomly divided into six groups: vehicle control, irradiation control (IR), IR+whey protein [0.30 g/kg body weight (BW)], IR+GOP 0.15 g/kg BW, IR+GOP 0.30 g/kg BW and IR+GOP 0.60 g/kg BW. Postirradiation 30-day survival trial, white blood cells count and bone marrow hematopoietic system damage were performed to identify the injury degree induced by irradiation. Then, histopathology analysis was observed and intestinal permeability in vivo was quantified with fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to determine antioxidant ability, plasma inflammatory cytokines, diamine oxidase (DAO) and endotoxin (LPS) levels. The immunohistochemistry assay was used to analyze the expression levels of tight junction proteins. We found that GOP-treated mice exhibited lower concentrations of plasma LPS and DAO and decreased instructors of inflammatory and oxidative stress which were linked to the lower intestinal permeability and higher tight junction proteins expression. The blockage of GOP was linked with the reduction of TNF-α and free radicals. The 15-day pretreatment of GOP could exhibit radioprotective effects, and another 15-day posttreatment benefited the quick repair of irradiation-induced injury. Prunella vulgaris polysaccharides have been reported to have antioxidant, antitumor and immunomodulatory activities. In this study, P. vulgaris polysaccharide (P1)-zinc complex (P1-Zn) was first prepared by a facile method and its antiproliferative effect on HepG2 human hepatocellular carcinoma cells was also investigated. Results showed that P1-Zn could effectively inhibit the proliferation (98.4% inhibition rate at 500 μg/mL) of HepG2 cells through induction of apoptosis, evidenced by morphological changes, chromatin condensation and G0/G1 phase cell cycle arrest. The intracellular mechanism of P1-Zn induced apoptosis was found to be the involvement of the activation of caspase-3 and -9, reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduction and mitochondrial dysfunction. Our findings suggest that P1-Zn may be a potent candidate for human hepatocellular carcinoma treatment and prevention in functional foods and pharmacological fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
