Here, an aura of glamour and artistry has survived the onslaught of Sunset Strip-style urbanism and car culture. Unfortunately, bland, low-rise apartment buildings over gaping garages have ravished the charm of this 1.9-acre city, a plague of the character-killing typology that has proliferated here since the 1960s. Today's urgent need for higher-density housing coincides fortuitously with the aging of these soulless, poorly built buildings. In response, the city encourages new multifamily residences based on the area's historic courtyard housing, originally built in Spanish Revival or Craftsman style.Palisades Development Group of Santa Monica hired Public, a small San Diego architecture firm, to design the 20-unit Lofts at Laurel Court after Palisades' president, Avi Brash, admired Public's mixed-media, multifamily Dutra Building in San Diego. Using bent glass and a fluid approach to geometry, architect Winka Dubbeldam created a curtain wall with depth, a street front that envelopes space as much as it separates inside from out. While Now York City developers have been riding a booming residential market over the past several years, almost all of the apartment towers they've built have been numbingly formulaic in terms of floor plans and exterior design. By inserting a new building on the street and incorporating the empty six-story warehouse next door, the architect could create 23 living units and provide space on the ground floor for an art gallery or stores, as well as a small fitness center and meeting room for the residents. Although the curtain wall faces west, laminated glass, UV film, and exterior metal fins reduce the impact of the sun.

This article presents information on the Trahan Residence conceived by Tighe Architecture. The residence perches with dignity in the Texas Hill Country. The architect tucked the house into the side of a hill instead of plopping it on top like a hood ornament. It reads immediately as part of the landscape, with a curving anticipatory approach that implies more than it reveals. Tighe describes the result as "a series of contradictions," but "counterpoints" is more like it. The interior, on the other hand, is as open and fluid as the exterior is dense and rooted — a 260-degree sweep of glass overlooking 14 acres of buffalo grass and live oak trees, with a small creek at the bottom. A spacious living and dining area occupies the center of the house, separated from the master suite by a monumental stone fireplace.

Toronto, Ontario's North York district, just a few miles from the CN Tower's famous spire, is a world away from the genteel, tree-lined neighborhoods that drew Jane Jacobs north of the border after saving Greenwich Village and SoHo in New York City, from the wrecking ball. The area does have at least one good feature: its setting at the crest of a wide wooded ravine, one of several that slice through Toronto's eastern flank. The house wraps itself around a small pond filled with lily pads and a lap pool oriented toward the Toronto skyline, thinly veiled by a grove of birch trees and the woods beyond. The architects, partners in the Toronto-based firm Shim-Sutcliffe Architects, wanted to ensure visual permeability through the house as a play against a weathering steel exterior that suggests a much heavier structure.

On a steeply sloping site on Berrima Road in Singapore, architects Wong Mun Summ and his Australian partner Richard Hassell, known together as WOHA Architects, designed a modern paradise in the tropics. It's hard to believe these three, highly refined, almost identical homes are rental units, rising like white oases in the city's suburbs. Placed parallel to one another, each house consists of 4,000 square feet on a 4,000-square-foot lot. The tight site areas challenged the designers to convey spaciousness within limitations and find privacy for residents. The houses are staggered in relation to each other to create interest and reduce visibility to neighbors. The architects explained their design strategy as consisting of three cubic forms linked by circulation passageways. The three bedrooms are located at the entrance level, with the master bedroom sited directly in front of the lobby, accessible only from a narrow timber bridge, separating it from the public areas of the house.

Recent discussions about innovations in prefabrication and modular or unitized construction methods generally focus on the aesthetics and economics of the final product. The process, or rather processes, of reaching the end tend to be described generically, as if all programs can be addressed the same way. The terms also describe a range of building products, such as the production of structural insulated panels and exterior insulation and finish systems, both of which are ubiquitous in commercial and residential building. The projects here can be described as component-based design, a term that lacks the preconceived notions associated with prefabrication. With the wealth of materials at hand, and the vision of what they can do, the editing skills of an architect in making material design decisions is very important. It is not the materials that are new. Aluminum has been around since 1807, glass since 4,000 B.C. It is the understanding of these components and the consideration of how they can be used together that opens up the design.

This light is furnished by rows of recently developed high-brightness LED lamps that are sealed inside weatherproof housings.
