Existing deep learning approaches to single image super-resolution have achieved impressive results but mostly assume a setting with fixed pairs of high resolution and low resolution images. However, to robustly address realistic upscaling scenarios where the relation between high resolution and low resolution images is unknown, blind image super-resolution is required. To this end, we propose a solution that relies on three components: First, we use a degradation aware SR network to synthesize the HR image given a low resolution image and the corresponding blur kernel. Second, we train a kernel discriminator to analyze the generated high resolution image in order to predict errors present due to providing an incorrect blur kernel to the generator. Finally, we present an optimization procedure that is able to recover both the degradation kernel and the high resolution image by minimizing the error predicted by our kernel discriminator. We also show how to extend our approach to spatially variant degradations that typically arise in visual effects pipelines when compositing content from different sources and how to enable both local and global user interaction in the upscaling process.

Image restoration has seen great progress in the last years thanks to the advances in deep neural networks. Most of these existing techniques are trained using full supervision with suitable image pairs to tackle a specific degradation. However, in a generic setting with unknown degradations this is not possible and a good prior remains crucial. Recently, neural network based approaches have been proposed to model such priors by leveraging either denoising autoencoders or the implicit regularization captured by the neural network structure itself. In contrast to this, we propose using normalizing flows to model the distribution of the target content and to use this as a prior in a maximum a posteriori (MAP) formulation. By expressing the MAP optimization process in the latent space through the learned bijective mapping, we are able to obtain solutions through gradient descent. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that explores normalizing flows as prior in generic image enhancement problems. Furthermore, we present experimental results for a number of different degradations on data sets varying in complexity and show competitive results when comparing with the deep image prior approach.

In this work, we address the difficulty of matching local features between images captured at distant points in time resulting in a global appearance change. Inspired by recent neural style transfer techniques, we propose to use an image transformation network to translate night images into day-like appearance, with the objective of better matching performance. We extend traditional style transfer, that optimize for content and style, with a keypoint matching loss function. The joint optimization of these losses allows our model to generate images that can significantly improve the performance of local feature matching, in a self-supervised way. As a result, our approach is flexible and does not require paired training data, which is difficult to obtain in practice. We show how our method can be used as an extension to a state-of-the-art differentiable feature extractor to improve its performance in challenging scenarios. This is demonstrated in our evaluation on day-night image matching and visual localization tasks with night-rain image queries.

While there are many deep learning based approaches for single image compression, the field of end-to-end learned video coding has remained much less explored. Therefore, in this work we present an inter-frame compression approach for neural video coding that can seamlessly build up on different existing neural image codecs. Our end-to-end solution performs temporal prediction by optical flow based motion compensation in pixel space. The key insight is that we can increase both decoding efficiency and reconstruction quality by encoding the required information into a latent representation that directly decodes into motion and blending coefficients. In order to account for remaining prediction errors, residual information between the original image and the interpolated frame is needed. We propose to compute residuals directly in latent space instead of in pixel space as this allows to reuse the same image compression network for both key frames and intermediate frames. Our extended evaluation on different datasets and resolutions shows that the rate-distortion performance of our approach is competitive with existing state-of-the-art codecs.

Most approaches for video frame interpolation require accurate dense correspondences to synthesize an in-between frame. Therefore, they do not perform well in challenging scenarios with e.g. lighting changes or motion blur. Recent deep learning approaches that rely on kernels to represent motion can only alleviate these problems to some extent. In those cases, methods that use a per-pixel phase-based motion representation have been shown to work well. However, they are only applicable for a limited amount of motion. We propose a new approach, PhaseNet, that is designed to robustly handle challenging scenarios while also coping with larger motion. Our approach consists of a neural network decoder that directly estimates the phase decomposition of the intermediate frame. We show that this is superior to the hand-crafted heuristics previously used in phase-based methods and also compares favorably to recent deep learning based approaches for video frame interpolation on challenging datasets., Comment: CVPR 2018

Most recent semantic segmentation methods train deep convolutional neural networks with fully annotated masks requiring pixel-accuracy for good quality training. Common weakly-supervised approaches generate full masks from partial input (e.g. scribbles or seeds) using standard interactive segmentation methods as preprocessing. But, errors in such masks result in poorer training since standard loss functions (e.g. cross-entropy) do not distinguish seeds from potentially mislabeled other pixels. Inspired by the general ideas in semi-supervised learning, we address these problems via a new principled loss function evaluating network output with criteria standard in "shallow" segmentation, e.g. normalized cut. Unlike prior work, the cross entropy part of our loss evaluates only seeds where labels are known while normalized cut softly evaluates consistency of all pixels. We focus on normalized cut loss where dense Gaussian kernel is efficiently implemented in linear time by fast Bilateral filtering. Our normalized cut loss approach to segmentation brings the quality of weakly-supervised training significantly closer to fully supervised methods., Accepted at CVPR 2018

Minimization of regularized losses is a principled approach to weak supervision well-established in deep learning, in general. However, it is largely overlooked in semantic segmentation currently dominated by methods mimicking full supervision via “fake” fully-labeled masks (proposals) generated from available partial input. To obtain such full masks the typical methods explicitly use standard regularization techniques for “shallow” segmentation, e.g. graph cuts or dense CRFs. In contrast, we integrate such standard regularizers directly into the loss functions over partial input. This approach simplifies weakly-supervised training by avoiding extra MRF/CRF inference steps or layers explicitly generating full masks, while improving both the quality and efficiency of training. This paper proposes and experimentally compares different losses integrating MRF/CRF regularization terms. We juxtapose our regularized losses with earlier proposal-generation methods. Our approach achieves state-of-the-art accuracy in semantic segmentation with near full-supervision quality.

International audience; We address the problem of multi-view video segmentation of dynamic scenes in general and outdoor environments with possibly moving cameras. Multi-view methods for dynamic scenes usually rely on geometric calibration to impose spatial shape constraints between viewpoints. In this paper, we show that the calibration constraint can be relaxed while still getting competitive segmentation results using multi-view constraints. We introduce new multi-view cotemporality constraints through motion correlation cues, in addition to common appearance features used by co-segmentation methods to identify co-instances of objects. We also take advantage of learning based segmentation strategies by casting the problem as the selection of monocular proposals that satisfy multi-view constraints. This yields a fully automated method that can segment subjects of interest without any particular pre-processing stage. Results on several challenging outdoor datasets demonstrate the feasibility and robustness of our approach.

International audience; Image-Based Rendering (IBR) algorithms generate highquality photo-realistic imagery without the burden of detailedmodeling and expensive realistic rendering. Recentmethods have different strengths and weaknesses, dependingon 3D reconstruction quality and scene content. Eachalgorithm operates with a set of hypotheses about the sceneand the novel views, resulting in different quality/speedtrade-offs in different image regions. We present a principledapproach to select the algorithm with the best quality/speedtrade-off in each region. To do this, we proposea Bayesian approach, modeling the rendering quality, therendering process and the validity of the assumptions ofeach algorithm. We then choose the algorithm to use withMaximum a Posteriori estimation. We demonstrate the utilityof our approach on recent IBR algorithms which useoversegmentation and are based on planar reprojection andshape-preserving warps respectively. Our algorithm selectsthe best rendering algorithm for each superpixel in apreprocessing step; at runtime our selective IBR uses thischoice to achieve significant speedup at equivalent or betterquality compared to previous algorithms.

International audience; Multiple view segmentation consists in segmenting objects simultaneously in several views. A key issue in that respect and compared to monocular settings is to ensure propagation of segmentation information between views while minimizing complexity and computational cost. In this work, we first investigate the idea that examining measurements at the projections of a sparse set of 3D points is sufficient to achieve this goal. The proposed algorithm softly assigns each of these 3D samples to the scene background if it projects on the background region in at least one view, or to the foreground if it projects on foreground region in all views. Second, we show how other modalities such as depth may be seamlessly integrated in the model and benefit the segmentation. The paper exposes a detailed set of experiments used to validate the algorithm, showing results comparable with the state of art, with reduced computational complexity. We also discuss the use of different modalities for specific situations, such as dealing with a low number of viewpoints or a scene with color ambiguities between foreground and background.

International audience; In this paper, we address the problem of object segmentation in multiple views or videos when two or more viewpoints of the same scene are available. We propose a new approach that propagates segmentation coherence information in both space and time, hence allowing evidences in one image to be shared over the complete set. To this aim the segmentation is cast as a single efficient labeling problem over space and time with graph cuts. In contrast to most existing multi-view segmentation methods that rely on some form of dense reconstruction, ours only requires a sparse 3D sampling to propagate information between viewpoints. The approach is thoroughly evaluated on standard multi-view datasets, as well as on videos. With static views, results compete with state of the art methods but they are achieved with significantly fewer viewpoints. With multiple videos, we report results that demonstrate the benefit of segmentation propagation through temporal cues.

International audience; We present a new method to extract multiple segmentations of an object viewed by multiple cameras, given only the camera calibration. We introduce the n-tuple color model to express inter-view consistency when inferring in each view the foreground and background color models permitting the final segmentation. A color n-tuple is a set of pixel colors associated to the n projections of a 3D point. The first goal is set as finding the MAP estimate of background/foreground color models based on an arbitrary sample set of such n-tuples, such that sam- ples are consistently classified, in a soft way, as "empty" if they project in the background of at least one view, or "occupied" if they project to foreground pixels in all views. An Expectation Maximization framework is then used to alternate between color models and soft classifications. In a final step, all views are segmented based on their attached color models. The approach is significantly simpler and faster than previous multi-view segmentation methods, while providing results of equivalent or better quality.
