The JWST Early Release Observations (ERO) included a NIRISS/SOSS (0.6-2.8$\,\mu$m) transit of the $\sim\,$850$\,$K Saturn-mass exoplanet HAT-P-18$\,$b. Initial analysis of these data reported detections of water, escaping helium, and haze. However, active K dwarfs like HAT-P-18 possess surface heterogeneities $-$ starspots and faculae $-$ that can complicate the interpretation of transmission spectra, and indeed, a spot-crossing event is present in HAT-P-18$\,$b's NIRISS/SOSS light curves. Here, we present an extensive reanalysis and interpretation of the JWST ERO transmission spectrum of HAT-P-18$\,$b, as well as HST/WFC3 and $\textit{Spitzer}$/IRAC transit observations. We detect H$_2$O (12.5$\,\sigma$), CO$_2$ (7.3$\,\sigma$), a cloud deck (7.4$\,\sigma$), and unocculted starspots (5.8$\,\sigma$), alongside hints of Na (2.7$\,\sigma$). We do not detect the previously reported CH$_4$ ($\log$ CH$_4$ $<$ -6 to 2$\,\sigma$). We obtain excellent agreement between three independent retrieval codes, which find a sub-solar H$_2$O abundance ($\log$ H$_2$O $\approx -4.4 \pm 0.3$). However, the inferred CO$_2$ abundance ($\log$ CO$_2$ $\approx -4.8 \pm 0.4$) is significantly super-solar and requires further investigation into its origin. We also introduce new stellar heterogeneity considerations by fitting for the active regions' surface gravities $-$ a proxy for the effects of magnetic pressure. Finally, we compare our JWST inferences to those from HST/WFC3 and $\textit{Spitzer}$/IRAC. Our results highlight the exceptional promise of simultaneous planetary atmosphere and stellar heterogeneity constraints in the era of JWST and demonstrate that JWST transmission spectra may warrant more complex treatments of the transit light source effect.

We present the first analysis of JWST near-infrared spectroscopy of stellar flares from TRAPPIST-1 during transits of rocky exoplanets. Four flares were observed from 0.6--2.8 $\mu$m with NIRISS and 0.6--3.5 $\mu$m with NIRSpec during transits of TRAPPIST-1b, f, and g. We discover P$\alpha$ and Br$\beta$ line emission and characterize flare continuum at wavelengths from 1--3.5 $\mu$m for the first time. Observed lines include H$\alpha$, P$\alpha$-P$\epsilon$, Br$\beta$, He I $\lambda$0.7062$\mu$m, two Ca II infrared triplet (IRT) lines, and the He I IRT. We observe a reversed Paschen decrement from P$\alpha$-P$\gamma$ alongside changes in the light curve shapes of these lines. The continuum of all four flares is well-described by blackbody emission with an effective temperature below 5300 K, lower than temperatures typically observed at optical wavelengths. The 0.6--1 $\mu$m spectra were convolved with the TESS response, enabling us to measure the flare rate of TRAPPIST-1 in the TESS bandpass. We find flares of 10$^{30}$ erg large enough to impact transit spectra occur at a rate of 3.6$\substack{+2.1 \\ -1.3}$ flare d$^{-1}$, $\sim$10$\times$ higher than previous predictions from K2. We measure the amount of flare contamination at 2 $\mu$m for the TRAPPIST-1b and f transits to be 500$\pm$450 and 2100$\pm$400 ppm, respectively. We find up to 80% of flare contamination can be removed, with mitigation most effective from 1.0--2.4 $\mu$m. TRAPPIST-1 is a nearby system of seven Earth-sized, temperate, rocky exoplanets transiting a Jupiter-sized M8.5V star, ideally suited for in-depth atmospheric studies. Each TRAPPIST-1 planet has been observed in transmission both from space and from the ground, confidently rejecting cloud-free, hydrogen-rich atmospheres. Secondary eclipse observations of TRAPPIST-1 b with JWST/MIRI are consistent with little to no atmosphere given the lack of heat redistribution. Here we present the first transmission spectra of TRAPPIST-1 b obtained with JWST/NIRISS over two visits. The two transmission spectra show moderate to strong evidence of contamination from unocculted stellar heterogeneities, which dominates the signal in both visits. The transmission spectrum of the first visit is consistent with unocculted starspots and the second visit exhibits signatures of unocculted faculae. Fitting the stellar contamination and planetary atmosphere either sequentially or simultaneously, we confirm the absence of cloud-free hydrogen-rich atmospheres, but cannot assess the presence of secondary atmospheres. We find that the uncertainties associated with the lack of stellar model fidelity are one order of magnitude above the observation precision of 89 ppm (combining the two visits). Without affecting the conclusion regarding the atmosphere of TRAPPIST-1 b, this highlights an important caveat for future explorations, which calls for additional observations to characterize stellar heterogeneities empirically and/or theoretical works to improve model fidelity for such cool stars. Exploring the properties of exoplanets near or inside the radius valley provides insights on the transition from the rocky super-Earths to the larger, hydrogen-rich atmosphere mini-Neptunes. Here, we report the discovery of TOI-1452 b, a transiting super-Earth ($R_{\rm p} = 1.67 \pm 0.07$ R$_{\oplus}$) in an 11.1--day temperate orbit ($T_{\rm eq} = 326 \pm 7$ K) around the primary member ($H = 10.0$, $T_{\rm eff} = 3185 \pm 50$ K) of a nearby visual binary M dwarf. The transits were first detected by TESS, then successfully isolated between the two $3.2^{\prime\prime}$ companions with ground-based photometry from OMM and MuSCAT3. The planetary nature of TOI-1452 b was established through high-precision velocimetry with the near-infrared SPIRou spectropolarimeter as part of the ongoing SPIRou Legacy Survey. The measured planetary mass ($4.8 \pm 1.3$ M$_{\oplus}$) and inferred bulk density ($5.6^{+1.8}_{-1.6}$ g/cm$^3$) is suggestive of a rocky core surrounded by a volatile-rich envelope. More quantitatively, the mass and radius of TOI-1452 b, combined with the stellar abundance of refractory elements (Fe, Mg and Si) measured by SPIRou, is consistent with a core mass fraction of $18\pm6$ % and a water mass fraction of $22^{+21}_{-13}$%. The water world candidate TOI-1452 b is a prime target for future atmospheric characterization with JWST, featuring a Transmission Spectroscopy Metric similar to other well-known temperate small planets such as LHS 1140 b and K2-18 b. We report \textit{Spitzer} full-orbit phase observations of the eccentric hot Jupiter XO-3b at 3.6 and 4.5 $\mu$m. Our new eclipse depth measurements of $1770 \pm 180$ ppm at 3.6 $\mu$m and $1610 \pm 70$ ppm at 4.5 $\mu$m show no evidence of the previously reported dayside temperature inversion. We also empirically derive the mass and radius of XO-3b and its host star using Gaia DR3's parallax measurement and find a planetary mass $M_p=11.79 \pm 0.98 ~M_{\rm{Jup}}$ and radius $R_p=1.295 \pm 0.066 ~R_{\rm{Jup}}$. We compare our \textit{Spitzer} observations with multiple atmospheric models to constrain the radiative and advective properties of XO-3b. While the decorrelated 4.5 $\mu$m observations are pristine, the 3.6 $\mu$m phase curve remains polluted with detector systematics due to larger amplitude intrapixel sensitivity variations in this channel. We focus our analysis on the more reliable 4.5 $\mu$m phase curve and fit an energy balance model with solid body rotation to estimate the zonal wind speed and the pressure of the bottom of the mixed layer. Our energy balance model fit suggests an eastward equatorial wind speed of $3.13 ^{+0.26} _{-0.83}$ km/s, an atmospheric mixed layer down to $2.40 ^{+0.92} _{-0.16}$ bar, and Bond albedo of $0.106 ^{+0.008} _{-0.106}$. We assume that the wind speed and mixed layer depth are constant throughout the orbit. We compare our observations with a 1D planet-averaged model predictions at apoapse and periapse and 3D general circulation model (GCM) predictions for XO-3b. Uranus and Neptune are the archetypes of "ice giants", a class of planets that may be among the most common in the Galaxy. They hold the keys to understand the atmospheric dynamics and structure of planets with hydrogen atmospheres inside and outside the solar system; however, they are also the last unexplored planets of the Solar System. Their atmospheres are active and storms are believed to be fueled by methane condensation which is both extremely abundant and occurs at low optical depth. This means that mapping temperature and methane abundance as a function of position and depth will inform us on how convection organizes in an atmosphere with no surface and condensates that are heavier than the surrounding air, a general feature of giant planets. Owing to the spatial and temporal variability of these atmospheres, an orbiter is required. A probe would provide a reference atmospheric profile to lift ambiguities inherent to remote observations. It would also measure the abundances of noble gases which can be used to reconstruct the history of planet formation in the Solar System. Finally, mapping the planets' gravity and magnetic fields will be essential to constrain their global composition, atmospheric dynamics, structure and evolution. An exploration of Uranus or Neptune will be essential to understand these planets and will also be key to constrain and analyze data obtained at Jupiter, Saturn, and for numerous exoplanets with hydrogen atmospheres., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1908.02092

Rotational modulations of emission spectra in brown dwarf and exoplanet atmospheres show that clouds are often distributed non-uniformly in these ultracool atmospheres. The spatial heterogeneity in cloud distribution demonstrates the impact of atmospheric dynamics on cloud formation and evolution. In this study, we update the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) time-series data analysis of the previously reported rotational modulations of WISEP J004701+680352 -- an unusually red late-L brown dwarf with a spectrum similar to that of the directly imaged planet HR8799e. We construct a self-consistent spatially heterogeneous cloud model to explain the Hubble Space Telescope and the Spitzer time-series observations, as well as the time-averaged spectra of WISE0047. In the heterogeneous cloud model, a cloud thickness variation of around one pressure scale height explains the wavelength dependence in the HST near-IR spectral variability. By including disequilibrium CO/$CH_4$ chemistry, our models also reproduce the redder $J-K_{\rm s}$ color of WISE0047 compared to that of field brown dwarfs. We discuss the impact of vertical cloud structure on atmospheric profile and estimate the minimum eddy diffusivity coefficient for other objects with redder colors. HD106906b is an ~11$M_{\mathrm{Jup}}$, ~15Myr old directly-imaged exoplanet orbiting at an extremely large distance from its host star. The wide separation (7.11 arcsec) between HD106906b and its host star greatly reduces the difficulty in direct-imaging observations, making it one of the most favorable directly-imaged exoplanets for detailed characterization. In this paper, we present HST/WFC3/IR time-resolved observations of HD106906b in the F127M, F139M, and F153M bands. We have achieved ~1% precision in the lightcurves in all three bands. The F127M lightcurve demonstrates marginally-detectable ($2.7\sigma$ significance) variability with a best-fitting period of 4 hr, while the lightcurves in the other two bands are consistent with flat lines. We construct primary-subtracted deep images and use these images to exclude additional companions to HD106906 that are more massive than 4$M_{\mathrm{Jup}}$ and locate at projected distances of more than ~500 au. We measure the astrometry of HD106906b in two HST/WFC3 epochs and achieve precisions better than 2.5 mas. The position angle and separation measurements do not deviate from those in the 2004 HST/ACS/HRC images for more than $1\sigma$ uncertainty. We provide the HST/WFC3 astrometric results for 25 background stars that can be used as reference sources in future precision astrometry studies. Our observations also provide the first 1.4-micron water band photometric measurement for HD106906b. HD106906b's spectral energy distribution and the best-fitting BT-Settl model have an inconsistency in the 1.4-micron water absorption band, which highlights the challenges in modeling atmospheres of young planetary-mass objects., Comment: Accepted for publication to AJ

Among the greatest challenges in understanding ultra-cool brown dwarf and exoplanet atmospheres is the evolution of cloud structure as a function of temperature and gravity. In this study, we present the rotational modulations of GU Psc b -- a rare mid-T spectral type planetary-mass companion at the end of the L/T spectral type transition. Based on the HST/WFC3 1.1-1.67$\rm\, \mu m$ time-series spectra, we observe a quasi-sinusoidal light curve with a peak-to-trough flux variation of 2.7 % and a minimum period of eight hours. The rotation-modulated spectral variations are weakly wavelength-dependent, or largely gray between 1.1-1.67$\rm\,\mu$m. The gray modulations indicate that heterogeneous clouds are present in the photosphere of this low-gravity mid-T dwarf. We place the color and brightness variations of GU Psc b in the context of rotational modulations reported for mid-L to late-T dwarfs. Based on these observations, we report a tentative trend: mid-to-late T dwarfs become slightly redder in $J-H$ color with increasing $J$-band brightness, while L dwarfs become slightly bluer with increasing brightness. If this trend is verified with more T-dwarf samples, it suggests that in addition to the mostly gray modulations, there is a second-order spectral-type dependence on the nature of rotational modulations., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in AJ

The exoplanet WASP-12b is the prototype for the emerging class of ultra-hot, Jupiter-mass exoplanets. Past models have predicted---and near ultra-violet observations have shown---that this planet is losing mass. We present an analysis of two sets of 3.6 $\mu$m and 4.5 $\mu$m $\textit{Spitzer}$ phase curve observations of the system which show clear evidence of infrared radiation from gas stripped from the planet, and the gas appears to be flowing directly toward or away from the host star. This accretion signature is only seen at 4.5 $\mu$m, not at 3.6 $\mu$m, which is indicative either of CO emission at the longer wavelength or blackbody emission from cool, $\lesssim$ 600 K gas. It is unclear why WASP-12b is the only ultra-hot Jupiter to exhibit this mass loss signature, but perhaps WASP-12b's orbit is decaying as some have claimed, while the orbits of other exoplanets may be more stable; alternatively, the high energy irradiation from WASP-12A may be stronger than the other host stars. Directly-imaged planetary-mass companions offer unique opportunities in atmospheric studies of exoplanets. They share characteristics of both brown dwarfs and transiting exoplanets, therefore, are critical for connecting atmospheric characterizations for these objects. Rotational phase mapping is a powerful technique to constrain the condensate cloud properties in ultra-cool atmospheres. Applying this technique to directly-imaged planetary-mass companions will be extremely valuable for constraining cloud models in low mass and surface gravity atmospheres and for determining the rotation rate and angular momentum of substellar companions. Here, we present Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 near-infrared time-resolved photometry for three planetary-mass companions, AB Pic B, 2M0122B, and 2M1207b. Using two-roll differential imaging and hybrid point spread function modeling, we achieve sub-percent photometric precision for all three observations. We find tentative modulations ($<\!\!2\sigma$) for AB Pic B and 2M0122B but cannot reach conclusive results on 2M1207b due to strong systematics. The relatively low significance of the modulation measurements cannot rule out the hypothesis that these planetary-mass companions have the same vertical cloud structures as brown dwarfs. Our rotation rate measurements, combined with archival period measurements of planetary-mass companions and brown dwarfs do not support a universal mass-rotation relation. The high precision of our observations and the high occurrence rates of variable low-surface gravity objects encourage high-contrast time-resolved observations with the James Webb Space Telescope., Comment: Accepted for publication in AAS Journal

The exquisite photometry of Kepler has revealed reflected light from exoplanets, tidal distortion of host stars and Doppler beaming of a star's light due to its motion (Borucki 2016; Demory et al. 2012; Welsh et al. 2010; Bloemen et al. 2012). Esteves et al. (2013, 2015) and Shporer et al. (2014) reported additional odd harmonics in the light curves of two hot Jupiters: HAT-P-7b and Kepler-13Ab. They measured non-zero power at three times the orbital frequency that persisted while the planet was eclipsed and hence must originate in the star (Esteves et al. 2015). Penoyre & Sandford (2018) showed that orbital eccentricity could result in time-dependent tidal deformation of the star that manifests itself at three times the orbital frequency and suggested this could be the origin of the measured odd modes. In this Research Note, we show that the small orbital eccentricities of HAT-P-7b and Kepler-13Ab cannot generate the odd harmonics observed in these systems. Esteves et al. (2015) hypothesized that the odd modes could be due to tidal distortion of the star if its spin is misaligned with the system's orbital motion, as is the case in both of these systems (Benomar et al. 2014; Herman et al. 2018), but this mechanism has yet to be verified theoretically or numerically., Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure, RNAAS in press

Time-resolved observations of brown dwarfs' rotational modulations provide powerful insights into the properties of condensate clouds in ultra-cool atmospheres. Multi-wavelength light curves reveal cloud vertical structures, condensate particle sizes, and cloud morphology, which directly constrain condensate cloud and atmospheric circulation models. We report results from Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Camera 3 near-infrared G141 taken in six consecutive orbits observations of HN Peg B, an L/T transition brown dwarf companion to a G0V type star. The best-fit sine wave to the $1.1-1.7\mu$m broadband light curve has the amplitude of $1.206\pm0.025\%$ and period of $15.4\pm0.5$ hr. The modulation amplitude has no detectable wavelength dependence except in the 1.4 $\mu$m water absorption band, indicating that the characteristic condensate particle sizes are large ($>1\mu$m). We detect significantly ($4.4\sigma$) lower modulation amplitude in the 1.4$\mu$m water absorption band, and find that HN Peg B's spectral modulation resembles those of early T type brown dwarfs. We also describe a new empirical interpolation method to remove spectral contamination from the bright host star. Although the final observations of the Spitzer Warm Mission are currently scheduled for March 2019, it can continue operations through the end of the decade with no loss of photometric precision. As we will show, there is a strong science case for extending the current Warm Mission to December 2020. Spitzer has already made major impacts in the fields of exoplanets (including microlensing events), characterizing near Earth objects, enhancing our knowledge of nearby stars and brown dwarfs, understanding the properties and structure of our Milky Way galaxy, and deep wide-field extragalactic surveys to study galaxy birth and evolution. By extending Spitzer through 2020, it can continue to make ground-breaking discoveries in those fields, and provide crucial support to the NASA flagship missions JWST and WFIRST, as well as the upcoming TESS mission, and it will complement ground-based observations by LSST and the new large telescopes of the next decade. This scientific program addresses NASA's Science Mission Directive's objectives in astrophysics, which include discovering how the universe works, exploring how it began and evolved, and searching for life on planets around other stars., Comment: 75 pages. Photometry of short-period planetary systems allows astronomers to monitor exoplanets, their host stars, and their mutual interactions. In addition to the transits of a planet in front of its star and the eclipses of the planet by its star, researchers have reported flux variations at the orbital frequency and its harmonics: planetary reflection and/or emission and Doppler beaming of starlight produce one peak per orbit, while ellipsoidal variations of a tidally distorted star and/or planet produce two maxima per orbit. Researchers have also reported significant photometric variability at three times the orbital frequency, sometimes much greater than the predictions of tidal theory. The reflected phase variations of a homogeneous planet contains power at even orbital harmonics-important for studies of ellipsoidal variations-but cannot contain odd orbital harmonics. We show that odd harmonics can, however, be produced by an edge-on planet with a time-variable map, or an inclined planet with a North-South (N-S) asymmetric map. Either of these scenarios entail weather: short-period planets are expected to have zero obliquity and hence N-S symmetric stellar forcing. North-South asymmetry in a giant planet would therefore suggest stochastic localized features, such as weather. However, we find that previous claims of large-amplitude odd modes in Kepler photometry are artifacts of removing planetary transits rather than modeling them. The only reliable claims of odd harmonics remain HAT-P-7b and Kepler-13Ab, for which the third mode amplitude is 6-8% of the planetary flux. Although time-variable albedo maps could in principle explain these odd harmonics, upper-limits on the infrared variability of hot Jupiters make this hypothesis unlikely. Condensate clouds fundamentally impact the atmospheric structure and spectra of exoplanets and brown dwarfs but the connections between surface gravity, cloud structure, dust in the upper atmosphere, and the red colors of some brown dwarfs remain poorly understood. Rotational modulations enable the study of different clouds in the same atmosphere, thereby providing a method to isolate the effects of clouds. Here we present the discovery of high peak-to-peak amplitude (8%) rotational modulations in a low-gravity, extremely red (J-Ks=2.55) L6 dwarf WISEP J004701.06+680352.1 (W0047). Using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) time-resolved grism spectroscopy we find a best-fit rotational period (13.20$\pm$0.14 hours) with a larger amplitude at 1.1 micron than at 1.7 micron. This is the third largest near-infrared variability amplitude measured in a brown dwarf, demonstrating that large-amplitude variations are not limited to the L/T transition but are present in some extremely red L-type dwarfs. We report a tentative trend between the wavelength dependence of relative amplitude, possibly proxy for small dust grains lofted in the upper atmosphere, and the likelihood of large-amplitude variability. By assuming forsterite as haze particle, we successfully explain the wavelength dependent amplitude with submicron-sized haze particles sizes of around 0.4 {\mu}m. W0047 links the earlier spectral and later spectral type brown dwarfs in which rotational modulations have been observed, the large amplitude variations in this object make this a benchmark brown dwarf for the study of cloud properties close to the L/T transition., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJL on September 15th

[Abridged] Distant stars and planets will remain spatially unresolved for the foreseeable future. It is nonetheless possible to infer aspects of their brightness markings and viewing geometries by analyzing disk-integrated rotational and orbital brightness variations. We compute the harmonic lightcurves, F_l^m(t), resulting from spherical harmonic maps of intensity or albedo, Y_l^m(theta,phi), where l and m are the total and longitudinal order. Notably, odd m>1 are present in an inclined lightcurve, but not seen by an equatorial observer. We therefore suggest that the Fourier spectrum of a thermal lightcurve may be sufficient to determine the orbital inclination of non-transiting short-period planets, the rotational inclination of stars and brown dwarfs, and the obliquity of directly imaged planets. In the best-case scenario of a nearly edge-on geometry, measuring the m=3 mode of a star's rotational lightcurve to within a factor of two provides an inclination estimate good to +/- 6 degrees, assuming stars have randomly distributed spots. Alternatively, if stars have brightness maps perfectly symmetric about the equator, their lightcurves will have no m=3 power, regardless of orientation. In general, inclination estimates will remain qualitative until detailed hydrodynamic simulations and/or occultation maps can be used as a calibrator. We further derive harmonic reflected lightcurves for tidally-locked planets; these are higher-order versions of the well-known Lambert phase curve. We show that a non-uniform planet may have an apparent albedo 25% lower than its intrinsic albedo, even if it exhibits precisely Lambertian phase variations. Lastly, we provide low-order analytic expressions for harmonic lightcurves that can be used for fitting observed photometry; as a general rule, edge-on solutions cannot simply be scaled by sin(i) to mimic inclined lightcurves., Comment: MNRAS accepted, 14 pages, 7 figures
